We’re always trying to do things better here at OC Life and again this week, we’ve tweaked a few things that we feel will add to your reading pleasure. Nothing too radical just a few subtle changes.

One change that I have flagged over the last couple of weeks was a further modification to our TV Guide. Some of the more helpful comments have led me to change the format to try and address a couple of the more frequently raised issues. The new format is over two pages, it has dates on each day and all programs for the 15 channels we have space for, are together on the one page. Movies are also highlighted a bit better. To accommodate this, we’ve had to move the Crossword and Sudoka to the bottom of the social photos pages.
50th year smiles
I’ve taken a few calls from readers lately asking us for help to raise certain social issues that are causing concern. They are issues that I too, as a local citizen, feel could be handled better, especially by the media. Of course, we’ll do what we can, but it’s worth reminding our readers again that we’re not a “news” paper in the commonly accepted understanding of what a newspaper’s role is. That said, my view is that a good and responsible local newspaper has the capacity to shape community attitudes and thinking, for either noble or ignoble purposes. One reader who called me last week, has rung previously to voice his opinion on how the CWD constantly lets our community down with the manner it reports issues and happenings. To quote the well-known line from the movie The American President – “We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them.” How true, but sadly, there just doesn’t seem to be any serious people out there with the authority, capacity or will to actually do what needs to be done.

Day VIEW Club Celebrates 50 years

he Day VIEW Club of Orange recently celebrated their 50 years in operation last week, gathering for a catered lunch, and get together. VIEW is the only National Women’s Organisation that is solely focused on supporting and advocating for education of disadvantaged young children. Orange VIEW Day Club President, Andrea White said, “I have been a member for 33 years, I joined initially because I needed a focus in life and a friend told me to come to VIEW, since then I’ve never looked back. It’s a great way to support children.. people ‘can’ make a difference one by one, by me coming to VIEW that’s my contribution.” Currently, the Club sponsors three Smith Family Learning for Life students and is actively involved in fundraising activities to raise donations for The Smith Family programs. “We have communication with children that we sponsor, though for privacy sake we don’t know who they are. When we send them things like birthday cards etc., they will send us back a letter in reply, but they don’t put their full name.” The club meets on the last Friday of each month at the Orange Ex-Services’ Club in the Tobruk Room for a meal and to listen to guest speakers. “We are always open to new members, so please get in touch today and come and see what it’s all about.” For more information about the club phone president Andrea White on 0418 683 566 or Pat Daly 6362 3993.

VIEW stand for ‘Voice, Interests and Education of Women. Members support the education of disadvantaged Australian children by raising much needed funds for The Smith Family. Through fundraising activities and social events in local communities, members raise money that goes directly to The Smith Family’s learning and mentoring programs for disadvantaged students.

downtown and have lunch and spend a day at the shops (yes, I love shopping). What makes me happy is I have a great handful of friends from Tenpin Bowling, I’m proud of myself at work, it’s a lot of fun and I like being in the community and talking to people.”
You might have seen a bit of publicity in OC Life for a new website I’ve created called National Life. This is a new project of mine, a more personal one that I hope will grow to be as popular nationally as Orange City Life has become here locally. It’s not intended to set the world on fire in the early days but over time, I think it could develop a strong following, in much the same way that Australian Story has on the ABC. The potential for such a site is limitless, but it will take time to develop and grow, especially since much of my time is currently devoted to OC Life. I wanted to do something that would give people pleasure and enjoyment by presenting positive and uplifting stories, not those that so often fill our news media today about the darker, unhappy or problem ridden side of life. The idea for National Life came out of many of the stories we do here in our magazine, stories about positive and successful people and what they’re doing, stories that stir people’s interest or imagination for one reason or another. We all love to hear about people who have achieved success in their field or area of interest, and often out of this we too get inspired to reach higher or strive for more in our own lives. Few things give us a greater sense of satisfaction than when we complete a task or project of some sort, be it something as simple as successfully
baking a cake for the first time or something grander like graduating at University. National Life will grow to be full of stories, from all over Australia, about people and things that will inspire others to improve their own lot in life. It’ll be a wonderful and growing source of entertainment and information about people, products, services, events and more, a place where readers will be able to draw inspiration, ideas and experience from. Over time, I’m hoping to gather stories from writers all over Australia for the site but to get started, I’ve included some of the stories we’ve featured in Orange City Life recently, stories that attracted quite a lot of positive feedback from readers. There are also other stories that haven’t appeared anywhere else, one is the story of how the Parkes Elvis Festival got started and how it’s grown to be one of the more iconic festivals held in Australia each year now. Currently, there are about a dozen stories on National Life and I encourage you to take a few minutes to have a look at what I’m developing. I’d also welcome any ideas you have for story material or any other comments. ARTIST BROTHERS shaping a new future in Orange BY JONATHAN ROE

The turning point for Carl and Eden Plaisted happened on a beach in Bali last September. Nine short months later, the brothers are sitting across the table from me on a wintery day in their new hometown of Orange.
ven they seemed surprise. “It is a little bit surreal to be honest,” said Carl. “If someone had asked me six months ago, do you honestly think that you are going to be able to achieve what you are wanting to achieve, I probably would have said no — I had my doubts!” Born and raised on a dairy farm in the Adelaide Hills, both brothers were drawn to the performing arts. Carl attended the prestigious Australian Ballet School and upon graduation was offered a job at the Sydney Dance Company. “I spent 13 years working for the Sydney Dance Company, for Graham Murphy,” said Carl. “Unfortunately, due to injury, I had to stop. I had a couple of operations to have bone spurs in my ankles removed and…” “And he was getting old for a dancer,” chimes in Eden. “Yeah, I was hoping to continue, but 13 years is a pretty good run,” said Carl. “Most people are lucky if they get eight or nine years, so I was pretty lucky.” With his dancing career behind him, Carl fell into hospitality. “Our whole family is very food orientated, so it was a natural progression I suppose, so I spent the last 20 years in hospitality, most recently at Hugo’s in Manly. It’s quite a reputable place and great people to work for hence why I was there for so long,” said Carl, who — whether he knew it or not at the time — was looking for a change. Eden too had found himself in Sydney after studying musical theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

“Carl was already in Sydney with Sydney dance, so I was in the industry for a while and dabbled around in lots of different things as every actor does, there’s always an actor who’s a waiter or barista or something, which is what I did on the side,” said Eden, who five years ago, took the plunge and decided to follow his creative passion. “I decided to go to university and study sculpture so that was at the University of NSW Art and Design, what was formerly known as COFA [The College of Fine Arts], and I thrived! There was just nothing more exciting than doing that,” said Eden, who began to put the idea of an artistic partnership to his brother. “Over the years I kind of hinted to Carl every now and again — what do you want to do? Then finally, when we went to Bali, he said, ‘OK, let’s do it’.” So, in a matter of months, the brothers turned their lives upside down and turned an idea on paper into up-and-running sculptural studio, 908 Art & Design. “It was time for a change, predominantly for me,” Carl. “And we’ve now formed our partnership, started our own business, got our own workshop, bought our own house, a car — we had a huge list of what we wanted to do, our goals and crazily enough, we’ve pretty much been able to tick every box.” Not that moving to Orange was originally on that list. The brothers had planned to stay in Sydney and were simply looking for an investment property in a regional area, but then they saw the potential. “When we found this property here in Orange, we basically fell in love with it,” said Carl. “It had pretty much everything we needed and a little bit more.”
“Our main priority was not moving away from family in Sydney,” said Eden, “but then we saw Orange isn’t too far away and when that switch flipped, that’s when we started to consider moving. “In Sydney, I lived in a studio apartment with a tiny courtyard, a dry cleaner down below, backpackers on either side and that was where I was finishing off all the artwork. Here we have a house with a massive backyard and garage — it’s unbelievable, it’s exciting and a bit overwhelming!” The brothers have just opened their first exhibition ‘Wood, Metal & Fire’ which is showing at Gaffa Gallery, Sydney until 17 June. They have also scored a sponsorship deal from Dremel Australia, and just last week they were approached by M Contemporary Gallery in Woollahra, who are now representing them. It’s all a dream come true for Carl and Eden. “To have been picked up by a gallery in Sydney and they are going to represent us… it is something I’ve dreamed about for five years and now it has happened,” said Eden. “It is super exciting, it wasn’t expected — not so early on, so quickly,” said Carl. With one exhibition behind them, Carl and Eden are back brainstorming in their new workshop and settling into life this side of the mountains. “It probably still hasn’t sunk in how lucky we are to be where we are,” said Carl. “It started from the first moment we came looking for houses in Orange, people are so forth giving, they are just so open. All of a sudden, we’ve felt like we are back in Macclesfield in the Adelaide Hills where we grew up —it has been good.”

BOOK CLUB FOR

fter pitching individual projects to Puffin, Collins Booksellers was one of 54 bookstores around Australia to receive a share of a $100,000 grant. Our local store will use their awarded sum towards their dedicated in-store ‘Kid Zone’ and to establish a Book Club for 12-14-year-olds. Store owner, Margaret Schwebel, explained the importance of both these initiatives, “Over 35 per cent of our store is currently dedicated to children’s books - we know that, just as much as adults, kids like to sit down and browse until they find the right book. In our pitch we were able to explain
our area that’s just for children, a haven for them to feel comfortable and relaxed, they have an area, that’s just theirs.” “I was thrilled when we found out we would benefit from the grant, I know there are bookshops all over Australia that have a fair priority for kid’s books, and they would possibly be applying for big Authors to come along. I think because we weren’t doing just a designated event and it was a bit left of field than the others, we were successful. I appreciated the fact that Puffin acknowledged the amount of work that we have put in and its rewarding to be acknowledged for that. We aren’t just having one fancy event and that’s it- once we

get this book club going, it’s something that’s going to continue, and kids will get constant value out of the money that’s coming through.” The teenage book club has been on Margaret’s mind for quite some time now, and these grant funds are now making that dream a reality. “I particularly wanted to start a teenage book club for 12-14 year old’s, just as they are coming out of primary school, when they love reading, but once they get to high school it’s seen as.. sort of ‘not cool’. Through our connections with the ‘Kids Lit Quiz’ I can see that there’s a lot of young teens who
are still passionate about reading and love getting together with like-minded souls.” “So, now that I have a bit of funding, it will aid in the running of it, allowing kids to get a discount on books, get pre-release copies from publishers, and just meet once a month here after school, sitting on the lounge, bean bags, floor, whichever.. this will be the kids space.” “The first month or two it will be whoever wants to come, we will sit and chat, I will just let the kids run it to an extent and see how it grows. It will be great; we can all be nerdy together!” Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for more information.

Local Charity, Give Me 5 has been gifted $54,000 thanks to the generosity of the Orange community and the hard work of Orange Lions Club volunteers. Thanks to a bumper crowd at the Easter Sunday Camel Races, the Lions Club were able to hand over a cheque for $54,000 to the charity last week, which will allow it to continue aiding the Children’s Ward at the Orange Hospital. President of Orange Lions Club, Ron Parry, said the money will help purchase specialised equipment allowing more children to be treated in here in Orange. “We all know how hard it is for families when they are split up through parents

Nicole was pleased to present the group with their defibrillator which will one day may save a life. Shed members are hoping that in reality, it gets very little use. “Personally, I hope that it sits on the shelf and never gets used,” said president Max Davidson. Community groups who may be eligible for a Westfund Community Grant are encouraged to apply online at www.westfund.com.au/grants Applications close on 30 June.
Round One of Westfund Health Insurance’s Community Grants Program for 2019 is officially open with eligible community organisations being encouraged to apply for a share of $120,000 in annual grants. The program also includes Westfund’s Here for Hearts program, which provides access to defibrillators for eligible organisations. The program launched in 2018 and has exceeded all expectations. One previous application that stood out was from Borenore/Nashdale Men’s Shed. The group were successful in their application for a defibrillator through the program after identifying a need for the device to provide peace of mind for the Shed’s older membership. The Shed is located 17

Orange brewers among 170 at Beer Festival
I
wonder if you’d ever drink a beer made with coffee and real donut mixture, or a cider made with turmeric, horseradish and onion? (It was actually better than it sounds) Last weekend saw Orange locals Badlands Brewery, Small Acres Cyder and Origin Chocolate go toe to toe with over 170 other breweries and cideries from Australia and New Zealand at the Sydney edition of the GABS Festival. The acronym G.A.B.S. stands for The Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular (as in beer tap) and if you’ve never been along, I doubt you’ve ever seen as many beer taps in one room – well over 200 taps. The festival is held in Brisbane, Melbourne,

Auckland and Sydney and aims to celebrate the plethora of tastes and styles possible in beer and cider. There are food trucks, a number of different seminars and information sessions and a host of other entertainment. Most of the beer and cider available is specially brewed for the event and tend to really push the envelope as far as what is possible in brewing. You won’t find anything that resembles Great Northern or Corona, and each is named with a pun, reference, or something to capture the weirdness of the product. Personally, I sampled beers such as Aunt Sally’s Slice of Sunshine inspired by Florida key lime tart, Purple Haze which was purple and tasted like a soda and ice-
cream ‘spider,’ and Blood of Ra which was deep red and based on ancient Egyptian beers brewed with ancient grains (like spelt) and blood orange. Our local producers got into the thick of it; Badlands, Small Acres and Origin Chocolate teamed up to create Dark Side of Orange a chocolate brown ale with cherries. I asked punters what they thought of it and got the following responses: “The cacao nibs are really prominent,” “I’m enjoying the funky sour flavour the cherries bring,”“Wow what a cracker, rich chocolate and Cherry!” Congratulations to Badlands, Small Acres Cyder and Origin Chocolate on brewing a standout beer at a cracking event!

Like us, our pets are living longer these days due to improved medications, and thanks to vaccinations protecting them from infectious diseases. Having an older pet can be such a joy. Your dog may be calmer and more in tune with the routine of your home. A senior cat won’t want to climb up the curtains, and is more likely to spend the day in a sunny spot watching the world go by. With increasing age your pet may become a little slower and less active, or bodily functions might decline. Some of this is part of the normal ageing process, but it is important that your pet is checked regularly by a vet, to ensure that he or she isn’t suffering from any underlying medical problems. It’s important to monitor your pet’s food and water intake (plus what comes out of the other end!) as any change in their thirst or appetite can be an early sign of underlying conditions like kidney disease or diabetes. It’s also a good idea to monitor your pet’s weight, as their metabolic rate tends to slow down as he or she ages, just like us humans! If your pet is 10

illthorpe’s stateliest old building; the Grand Western Lodge has certainly seen better days and is definitely in need of a bit of tender loving care; and a new owner with deep pockets! Standing in the centre of the township on the corner of Victoria and Montgomery Streets; it attracts comment from most sight-seers to the popular tourist village many of whom seem disappointed in its lack of current use. Built in the grand Victorian style; the heritage-listed former hotel and boarding house was constructed in 1901 in Millthorpe’s boom years before World War I for those attending the then-popular ploughing demonstrations and competitions. It closed as a hotel in 1961 and was converted into a licensed boarding house for people with disabilities, which operated until 2011. The building features unusual keyhole windows and pictorial leadlight glazing. The dominant architectural features include the two-storey verandah with cast iron balustrading and valance work and the massive stuccoed central parapet. In June 2018, the building was listed for sale, advertised as being suitable for a multiple accommodation facility, retail, bed and breakfast or disability services. “At the moment it’s a big building not being utilised; it would be good to see someone in there,” a local familiar with the Lodge said. “It’s pretty solid and in pretty good nick; I think it would make a bloody grand home,” the local said. Mr Rowlands and his wife Delwyn from balmy Magnetic Island were recently enjoying the wintry sights of the Central Tablelands after attending a wedding in Cowra. “It’s certainly a beautiful old building; but I can see looking at it that does need a bit of work,” Mr Rowlands concluded.

STALLHOLDER NEWS Hemp Honey is now a thing! We love it when our stallholders collaborate to create new products. In the case of Hungry Bee’s Chris Anderson (pictured with his regular honey), he was always keen to develop a special honey but the opportunity to work with another stallholder accelerated the project. “I was going to do it myself but I thought, why not collaborate with another brand? Tina and Angela from AT Hemp presented the opportunity,” Chris said. “We both sell our produce through Orange Farmers Market and Bissy’s Café and we decided to co-brand a honey.” Hemp is not only a great plant for bees, it also offers benefits to humans too. “In terms of the bees, hemp has really good pollen,” Chris said. “It’s a good food source for bees at this time of year, coming into Winter, when there’s not much around for bees and the bees need protein. The hemp is grown near Forbes it’s not as cold as here so the bees are still quite active.” As for humans, hemp and honey are both known to have numerous health benefits so it makes sense to combine them. “We blend hemp seeds and powder into yellow box honey. The hemp oils are great for cholesterol and hemp also has Omega3. There are a few I’ve seen online but we’ll be the first in the Central West. You’ll definitely know which is the hemp honey from its colour. It’s quite green!” Make sure you look out for it at the next Orange Farmers Market. 12

The Lockwoods have been in the business of honey production for 40 to 50 years and began developing the Beekeepers Inn approximately 20 years ago, expanding the business into beer production, a restaurant and functions. “I love interacting with locals and tourists and chatting with the other stallholders and gathering produce for our restaurant through them.” In time for Winter, Mark will be brining 1859’s Oatmeal Coffee Stout to the market as well as his usual range of delicious beers. Home-made crème fraiche (makes 1 cup)
“
• 1 cup (250ml) single (pure) cream • 2 Tbspn buttermilk Whisk the cream and buttermilk in a large jar. Place a layer of muslin or a clean Chux cloth on top and secure with twine or an elastic band, to stop bugs, dust or anything else getting into the mixture. Leave the mixture to do its thing on the bench for 24 hours – it should thicken to the consistency of a good Greek-style yoghurt. If needed, leave it for another 24 hours. Stir well, transfer to a container with a lid and store in the fridge for up to two weeks.

A walk down Summer Street
ver recent months I’ve told you about our Community Project for this year - Put Orange First. There are various objectives we have with this but for now I’ll only mention one. Put Orange First wants to support and encourage local retailers and one way we’re doing that is by encouraging locals to shop and support local retailers more often. If we achieve this the ongoing benefits will become very evident over time. One of the themes we’ll be pushing is “Become a localist”. More on that later. For now, I just want to remind readers about the great and varied range of retailers that we have in Summer Street. I decided to walk down one side and back up the other side of Summer Street last Saturday morning to take a closer look at the range of retailers that are there. I started at Clinton Street and walked down to Peisley Street, then back again. I’ve lived here almost 9 years and there are shops along Summer Street that I’ve never put a foot inside. There are some really impressive shops along Summer Street, so let me remind you about what’s there. I have concentrated mainly on retail shops and left out food outlets and other more service type businesses. I have also elaborated a little on those shops that I feel may have particular interest

Between Clinton and Hill Streets is Anything Grows - Probably best known for their café, this business also has a quaint gift shop section and they sell a range of plants. Between Hill and Sales Streets is the Summer Centre - This Centre has grown to be a very popular spot for shoppers, mainly for the Ashcroft’s Supa IGA and Dan Murphy's super stores. Other good-looking retailers worth a look include King of the Pack Tobacconist, Super Dollar and Tablelands Premier Meats. In the same block, Revive Furniture and Décor has also moved into a shop near Percy’s. Further down between Sale and Anson Streets is the Orange Arcade and it now has some really interesting businesses in there including - Pick Me Flowers and Gifts - one of our newer florists, Fix and Fit Footwear - shoe repairs and orthopaedic shoes, Turtle and the Ghostrider - very upbeat clothing etc., Willoughby’s Model Cars and Football - incredible shop, heaps to explore, The Lane Cellars - interesting boutique liquor outlet, Cured: Hand Crafted Artisan Meats - specialist deli meats, Chaos and Karma - eye-catching clothing, art etc., Scoop Wholefoods - spectacular array of organic and natural foods in bulk, and of course Harris Farm - simply a favourite, what more can you say? Back on the street again and still in the same
block, you’ll find Rivers, The Big Outlet - a newer toy outlet, Sportspower - recently renovated and looks brilliant, Chemist Warehouse, Best & Less, Ziera Shoes, Regency Jewellers, Bobbies Clothing - Award winning clothing store, Terry White Chemmart, Millers, Katies, Red Spot Homewares and Giftware. In the next block between Anson Street and Lords Place you’ll find Blowes Menswear - almost iconic menswear store, and Sussan, The Clever Owl very interesting store with a great range of kiddies games and learning aids etc. as well as a good range of kiddies clothing, they’re right next to Australia Post which is also worth a closer look if you haven’t been inside for a while, it’s quite amazing what they sell. Then there’s Just Jeans, Collins Booksellers - delightful and well laid out bookstore, Stormriders and Ghanda Clothing both must sees for the fashion minded younger generation. Across Lords Place and you’ll find Jenisa Florist, Landers Music - our long serving and highly regarded music store and TJ’s Newsagency. Crossing the road and doing a 180, I headed back up Summer Street towards Lords Place to first pass Orange Locksmiths and Security - a local wellknown and experienced locksmith, then Worldly Treasures - a truly exquisite shop for beautiful and unusual items from around the world. Across Lords Place, between there and Anson
Street, you’ll find Orange Baby Kingdom - a fabulous baby shop, then Orange Central Square - that’s a story in itself for another time, EB Games, Got it, Blue Illusion, Bed Bath n’ Table - great Manchester and homewares shop, Kathmandu, Strandbags, Black Pepper, Taking Shape catering for ladies sizes 12 - 24, and The Athlete’s Foot. Hidden Treasures
I
’m almost certain that our community knows of our beautiful Cook Park, though it seems that not as many are familiar with the Cook Park Guildry, which, true to its name, resides in Cook Park, closest to Summer Street. The Guildry is a unique handcrafts centre, right on our City’s doorstep. Originally built for the Caretaker- Gardener (at the cost of 185 pounds) and for two generations the Bastick Family who lived in the little cottage. When it became vacant in 1973 it was decided to offer the use to various arts and craft groups in the district. A Committee was then formed to manage the cottage and it was decided to call the new venture ‘Park Guildry’, meaning; the union of men and women in a trade or craft, to keep a high standard of work. Right from the very beginning, the community have been a driving force behind the projects of the Guildry, as it is run on a voluntary roster system by its 60-70 members. Volunteer, Jenny Solling has been with the Guildry since the beginning, with a few years off here and there she found her way back in 2012 and is now the Treasurer. Jenny explained, “I was working one day when a lady came in and was showing her grandchildren around, it’s also not uncommon

We even have some relations of the Bastick family come in and they actually tell us more than what we know about it, this place gives us a real connection with our customers.” “We all love it here, it’s a chance for us to be social and meet a lot of people who walk though the doors, as well as sell a bit of craft.”
“We have people that come in and say the place hasn’t changed in 40 years,” Jenny laughed, “Though we are always getting new and different craft all the time. I think we are becoming more professional in how we present ourselves. We have been trying to keep up with technology, and now over 50% of our sales are made by eftpos.” Favourites at the cottage include; cakes, slices and jams which we are told are very popular. Knitwear, jumpers, hats and caps, paintings, card making and much more! “We have a woodwork room where we have pieces from the local Men’s Shed, we also have items from Premibabes and floral work from Friends of the Community. Along with that, we donate each year to the Orange Show in the craft section.” “We have people that come from Sydney, on their way to Dubbo or surrounds and they come in and tell us that they make this a regular stop. We even have a lot of overseas visitors, people from New York were here just the other day.” “It’s funny, we seem popular to a lot of out of towners but there are local people who are still discovering us.” If you’re out for a stroll this weekend why not pop in and see what’s on display in the Guildry, we promise you wont regret it.

Spidey Sense Superpower, or just ahead of the game? You be the judge. A wise friend of mine once said “It doesn’t take any talent to be on time”. That doesn’t make him Yoda-like or the next PM, but that nine word saying can be extrapolated to cover quite a few standards. For example - like being prepared, having enthusiasm, bringing a positive work ethic, showing energy and enthusiasm, conveying good body language, and also perhaps having a willingness to get out of your comfort zone and learn new things. I don’t believe there’s one single thing in the sentences above that take any smarts to do. From the age of 8 to 88 anyone could be a subscriber to these attributes. The mate (an excellent sporting coach) who says the thing about being on time, was known to utter these words at training sessions where one of the prima donnas of the side would saunter in after things had started, act like nothing was wrong, and then get huffy when others objected to them thinking they were ‘special’. The amount of this kind of behaviour has increased exponentially in our world-of-privilege over the past 20 or so years, if you ask me. Anyway, to the special talent of ‘Spidey sense’. For those who haven’t heard of that term, legendary superhero Peter Parker, aka Spider Man, had a special type of sensory talent that meant he could anticipate trouble brewing, which meant more often than not he was not only ahead of the game, but that things always turned out in his favour when it came to the outcome of an adventure with the bad guys. A different mate to the one who used the ‘being
on time’ adage claims his Spidey sense is being able to tell if a lady is pregnant. Some may poopoo this talent, whilst others may say he’s either just lucky or really brave when giving an opinion on something as dangerous as this. He’s sticking to his guns, believing he’s proved his version of the Spidey sense right on many an occasion. I’ll hazard a guess here and say that he’s really not blessed with a superhero talent at all. But he is certainly a gifted man and one I admire organised, observant, sensitive and perceptive. Spidey sense or no spidey sense, I don’t want to be around when this guy gets it wrong. My last kid turns 18 as you are reading this column today. He’ll be out the door in February as he embarks on the next stage of his life, leaving us all alone and lonely, but I digress. I have always prided myself of staying on top of things when it came to teenagers, and the biggest buzz of my own Spidey sense was to know something that they thought was a secret. “How could YOU possibly know that ???” They would say incredulously. I’d inform them of my Spidey sense saying “I know everything, so be careful”, they would shake their head in disbelief, then I’d do the same thing again a week later to the same reaction. I think they’ve cottoned on. Other words for Spidey sense include organisation, preparation, punctuality, sensitivity, perception, effort, sweat, work ethic and most importantly passion. The two older kids who’ve left home have shown plenty of glimpses of having the above qualities, and hopefully kid #3 is in the game now too. Not sure if any of them will be able to tell if a lady is pregnant or not, but they certainly have the Spidey sense to be like my other mate, knowing they’ve got enough talent to be on time. The world might be a little bit better in 2019 if we all took a leaf out of Peter Parker’s book.

BAILEY TAKES ON THE WORLD IN JAPAN

his Saturday, 12 -year-old Bailey Clancey will be facing off against the some of the world’s best karate Athletes at the Japan Martial Arts Championships. Bailey and his parents left for Yokahama earlier this week to fit in a final training session with the Australian Squad before the tournament on 9 June. Bailey, who trains at Kumiai Ryu High Impact Gym here in Orange, has only been training for two years, but he has shown dedication and commitment to his art. “On Monday, I have an hour advanced class and then another class,” said Bailey, running through his weekly training regime. “On Wednesday I have a class that I help out in, a class that I train in and then there is another one — so that’s about three hours, then on Thursday I have Muay Thai class and a sparring class and on Friday I have boxing.” To qualify for the tournament Baily had to place in the top 5 in the Australian Martial Arts Championships. “And to get there you have to be top 10 in a state titles,” said Bailey, who also won an Australian Title at the International Sports Karate Association (ISKA) competition last year and qualified for the ISKA World titles in Florida. David Shaw, Head of Keyboard Studies at the Orange Regional Conservatorium BY JONATHAN ROE “I actually studied flute for seven years,” said David Shaw, who is now Head of Keyboard Studies at the Orange Regional Conservatorium. David grew up in here in Orange and was pursuing a career as a musician in Melbourne when the opportunity of a job in town arose. “I left here at the end of 2009 for university and played with some orchestras and then went to an orchestral training academy in Melbourne,” said David. “I was living and working in Melbourne, playing in some professional orchestras and I could have either taken the dive and kept going with that and been a casual musician doing the audition circuits to try and land a full-time job with an orchestra, but then an old acquaintance of mine put up on Facebook asking if there was a pianists who
wanted some work so I came back with my wife for a year to see if we would like it and we haven’t left! As Head of Keyboard Studies, David oversees eight piano teachers and handles all new enrolments amongst many other duties. “Any new student looking to start piano, I get in touch with the family and have a chat and then figure out who might be best suited to teach that student,” he said. “I also manage all the accompaniment requests for anyone doing an exam or a performance or eisteddfod anything like that. And any concerts here that require pianists and I also manage the staff chamber music concerts, where various staff members get together to perform in small ensembles.” David is also the Conservatorium’s
school liaison, which entails talking to school principals about helping out with their music programs. “We go into a dozen or so schools around the area to do various things, whether it’s private teaching or band programs or choirs,” he said. “On top of that I teach at the conservatorium every afternoon and I teach at three schools as well, some of them are outside of my role here, so I teach about 60 students across all the schools and the conservatorium. “It keeps me busy! Plus, I do a few other things as well. I work as an orchestral manager for the Orange Symphony Orchestra and I’m involved in the Orange Theatre Company quite a lot as well — we just put on the musical Rent — and so between all that I play and I teach and a I manage as much as I can.”
NEW EXHIBITION OPENS Orange Art Society is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition at The Cultural Centre in the Woollies carpark between Anson and Sale Streets, behind Harris Farm. The exhibition will run for 2 months and artworks will be for sale at very reasonable prices. This Sunday afternoon, Orange Cellars is hosting Tipple — a familyfriendly afternoon of music, food and the chance to taste some of the best beer, cider, wine and spirits that our region has to offer. Orange Cellars has long had a reputation as a hub for local wines and beverages, said Johanna Scott, who took over the business at the end of last year with her husband Tim. “But we thought there is so much more we can do with this business to really elevate these producers that we are working with,” said Johanna. “There is lots happening in Orange at other times of the year, but winter can get a bit quiet, so we though why not create something festive and fun that people rug up and come out in the cold and enjoy.” Tipple will be a small winter market day held on the 44

grounds at Orange Cellars featuring eight local wine producers, local beers, cider and spirits. “We will have tables and heating so people can sit down and enjoy some of the products they are tasting and then we will also have some entertainment so there will be live music Lueth Ajak, who is well known around town, and Matt Jones from MES entertainment will be DJing,” said Johanna. “And then Tim and I are parents ourselves and we know that for an event like this you really need something for the kids, so we have a magic show, we have an interactive music session with the Early Years Music School, face painting and a jumping castle!” Tipple will run from 12pm to 6pm on Sunday 9 June. Tickets are $10 if you purchase online or $15 at the door. Entry gets you a $10 voucher that can be redeemed in the bottle shop against the purchase of participating products. OCLife Words of Wisdom with Melise Coleman This week I caught up with the beautiful Maryanne Novotny. Maryanne is very proud of her family and it certainly shows; her eyes light up when she talks about them. “I have had an amazing life, I am very happy and very grateful for the many blessings in my life, including my children, my grandchildren and my great grandchildren.
Where and when were you born? Czechoslovakia, 1925. What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? Don’t be greedy and be happy, and free. What’s the secret to a happy marriage? You really have to love your man.. my husband (Albin) was a good man and a good father. What big world events were the most memorable while you were growing up? In my last year of school World War II began, during the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, many young people were sent to Germany to work in ammunition factories, because I was working on a farm, they left me alone. What was your first job? When the War was over, I left home and got a job training as an assistant Nurse at a hospital which was run by Nuns. One day, a Policeman came into the hospital, I was changing the bedsheets with Sister.. she came in and said there is a young Policeman here, and sister said, no he has come for her, I saw him for the first time and he was very sick, he had Typhoid fever, he needed a blood transfusion, we had the same blood group. I said, I will give him blood.. he was getting better and then I got Typhoid fever. After all of that, we met again, and we married a year later.

What do you miss about the goodold days? Not much because there was always trouble, with the war, and I didn’t get on with my stepmother, I really don’t miss anything. Describe yourself in three words. Just one word.. courage. You have to have courage. What is your favourite childhood memory? I didn’t have a happy childhood.. I liked to go to school though. One day my teacher came in and said, ‘anybody want to learn German?’ Of course I put my hand up. When I started, she said ‘Give it up, you’ll never learn another language’. In 1950 my friend was in a group where that same teacher was. The teacher asked about me and my friend said, ‘Oh she’s in Australia’.. she could not believe it, I bet she remembered what she said to me, but when you have to, you have to.
What life advice would you pass along to your grandchildren? I have lovely grandchildren and great grandchildren that I am so proud of, always listen to your parents and be good in school. What could you tell me that I would be surprised to learn about you? In 1948, Russia took over, Albin (my husband) was being forced to work under the communist rule and he knew he couldn’t do it anymore. He said we had to run away from the country, I said alright.. We spent three days trying to get to the border, walking through mountains, snow and hiding in bushes to avoid border patrol guards. Every bus station and dock, there were police checking everybody’s identity. At four o’clock in the morning we got to an icy river, we had to take our shoes off, tie them around our necks and waded across freezing cold rough, water and slippery rocks, it was so cold. The water was up to our necks and I was pregnant. We came out the other side and reached the boarder safely. We came upon a Pub where the owner took us in, and we asked American Army soldiers to help us. They took us to a refugee camp for four months, and then we were moved to another in Binoly, Italy where I gave birth to my son. I was only 23 when we were on the run, I wasn’t that frightened, I didn’t have time to think much. From Italy, we immigrated to Australia. My husband was sent to work for the Sydney Waterboard and I was in Parkes, in a Camp for women and children. He couldn’t see us much; the train took 24 hours from Sydney to Parkes. What did you want to be when you grew up? My heart was set on a career making continental cakes. Because of food rationing and shortages, I was unable to pursue this career. What are you most proud of? My children, they are very good to me. What did you get up to when you were young? I used to like watching soccer, I had a lot of fun with my children and that was enough for me. Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? My husband, he always showed you can do what you wish to do, and he worked very hard for his family.

The Heart Foundation is calling for entries in the 2019 Active Aus tralia Innovation Challenge, which will award up to eight gran ts valued at $10,000 each for inno vative community-based projects designed to get Aussies moving. According to data available from the Heart Foundation’s Austral ian Heart Maps, only around one in three NSW adults is acti ve enough for good health. We are the fourth least active state or territory in the country, afte r South Australia, Queensland and Tasmania. Nationally, six in ten adults, thre e quarters of seniors and more than eight in ten children are not meeting physical activity guid elines. This is increasing their risk of developing heart disease, which is the single leading cau se of death in Australia, claimin g 51 lives a day. “The Heart Foundation is commit ted to turning this situation arou nd, and through the Active Australia Innovation Challenge, we want to hear about grass-ro ots initiatives that will encourage communities to get more active and live a healthier lifestyle,” Hea rt Foundation CEO NSW, Kerry Doyle, said. “Not everyone wants to join a gym or play organised sport. This challenge is designed to kickstart projects that are innovati ve, accessible, dynamic and fun ,” Ms Doyle said. “Last year’s inaugural challenge attracted some terrific entries in NSW. Winning initiatives included a sensory garden for children with special needs at a Sydney school, and a Univers of Newcastle study into high-int ity ensity interval training (HIIT) in a workplace setting,” she said. The Active Australia Innovation Challenge is part of the Healthy Heart Initiative, which is funded by the Australian Government. The challenge will run annuall y for four years between 2018 2021. Our lives go on without you
On Monday 27th May 2019 students from Euchareena Public School and St Joseph’s Molong gathered to commemorate ‘Sorry Day’ as part of National Reconciliation Week (NRW). Students and staff shared a BBQ lunch together, listened to a story about The Stolen Generation and watched a movie about Aboriginal Culture, history and The Stolen Generation. The afternoon was led by Fleur Magick Dennis. Fleur is an Aboriginal parent at our school and a member of the Euchareena community as well as an active member of the Molong AECG. We are lucky enough to have weekly Wiradjuri language and culture lessons for our students that Fleur delivers. NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. At the heart of reconciliation is the relationship between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. To foster positive race relations, our relationship must be grounded in a foundation of truth. Photo contributed
