Talk about jumping from the stove into the fridge! My wife and I spent 9 days at Norah Head last week and the weather could not have been more perfect. Every day the range was from around 16 – 25 and it was a shirt every day, despite packing several tracksuits. We arrived back on Sunday to be greeted by 1 – 7 in Orange on Monday. If that wasn’t bad enough, Monday was an ice block with the wind chill more like minus 7. Welcome home Bob!

Move over Coffee – Tea rules at this Festival

Our TV Guide continues to bring out the nasties in some people. While I was away, we took one we hadn’t heard before. Someone accused us of being racist because one of the minor stations we’ve had to leave out of the guide was the Aboriginal channel. The fact is there are 19 channels and we can only fit 15 in. That said, some of the criticism we have received seemed valid so from next week, we’re changing the guide again. It won’t please everyone but will address some of the more practical issues raised by readers. Let me also thank those people who sent emails of encouragement following my comments last issue. I wish I could please everyone but sadly I can’t. July 1 is the date that the CWD/Midstate Observer start under new ownership. I for one, can’t wait to see what the new owner does. Orange deserves a great local newspaper, one we can take pride in and one that has a better appreciation of what makes worthwhile news in a Regional Community like Orange. We deserve much better than what we’ve been given under Fairfax and Nine.

It’s never a dull day with Lou! BY MELISE COLEMAN

IT WAS UNBEARABLE TO THINK ABOUT NOT HAVING LOU IN OUR LIVES.

OC Life received an email last week regarding a Labrador named Lou, who had defied all odds of survival after helping herself to a box of snail and slug bait.

t was a Friday night and at Mulberry Lane Vets, Judith Carney was on call. She had received a distressing call from owners Zac and Rosie Marr, worried after Lou began to suffer severe seizures and they didn’t know why. It so happened they would learn what Lou’s latest meal had been after some evaluation and an explanation by Judith – her words said it all ‘a bucket full of green stuff’. “Once we knew what had happened it was all hands-on deck. We worked on her until 3am in the morning trying to save her life, for three days straight, it wasn’t until Tuesday that she woke again,” Judith explained. “My low point was Sunday night; I was reduced to tears with my husband because we were getting low on certain drugs. He actually went to Bathurst, Stuart Street Vets that night where Belinda helped us get what we needed.” Judith began to tear up, “It makes me emotional having that support from everyone, it wasn’t just us, it was a huge

team effort.” After four nights on three hours sleep, Judith was getting the rest she deserved when she received a video of Lou waking up to her owners’ voices. “I just cried my eyes out, and all of the nurses were in tears because we just didn’t know if she would pull through. It’s just so beautiful seeing something like that, it makes your job worthwhile, something where you know that without a vet, she would have died, it’s why I do the job, you use all of your skills that you’ve learnt, and you use them to pull her through and save her life and Lou is so lucky to have such dedicated and beautiful owners.” Lou’s appeal doesn’t end there. I’ve not known a dog that barges into the Vets front doors and seeks out the Veterinarian. I was speaking with Judith when all of a sudden, the gorgeous Lou barrelled through to find Judith, running straight up to her and sitting at her feet, those gorgeous brown eyes looking straight up at her. “Oh, here is the star of the show,” Judith laughed, “Trouble with a capital T.”

With her little mate by her side receiving a pat, Judith continued, “You have to be persistent, you can’t give up, the fact she was still alive through the four day process, I thought.. there is hope, she is fighting, she is a very tough dog.” “it was unbearable to think about not having Lou in our lives. Owner, Rosie continued, “That was the thing, we thought there was always hope there. Judith and the team were upfront with us, but they also never gave up. She has made a full recovery which is just miraculous, we are so lucky, and we are so grateful to the team at Mulberry Lane, they put everything into saving her, it was unbearable to think about not having Lou in our lives.” “We had no idea how dangerous snail bait was, it was just horrific what it did to her and It was a reminder for us, that if you’re going to have things like that, they that they are properly stored.” It seems she’s had a lifetime of keeping her owners, Zac and Rosie on their toes and she is what can only be described as a frequent flyer at the vets, Zac said, “It’s

never a dull day with Lou, everyone who knows her knows just how mischievous and cheeky she is, and she knows how to play the cute card. We have probably had 10 visits throughout her life, from two knee replacements at different times, to now this, and in true Labrador style, she never lost her appetite,” Zac laughed. “She’s getting close to her nine lives that’s for sure,” Rosie added, “Zac and I are just so grateful to Mulberry Lane and Judith, Hayley, Lucy, the whole team, they put their lives on hold for a whole week trying to save Lou’s life and we are so grateful.” Judith added, “This is not the first case we have seen regarding snail bait, although it was the worst case I’ve seen, It’s an extremely toxic poison and a timely reminder that one, there are other options out there, and two, if you do choose to use it, make sure it is stored where no paws, or even tiny fingers can reach it.”

TIME FOR GOVERNMENTS TO RETHINK THEIR STRATEGIES

Cate Having grown up in a semi-rural setting, on the outskirts of Sydney, the idea of raising our children in the country was so appealing, that in 2011 we made the tree change to Orange. Whilst I still love spending time around Sydney Harbour, life in Orange has been even more than we had hoped. My husband Rob and I have a small property on the

Lawrence western side of Orange; and are ever grateful for the beautiful views, great neighbours and country life. I have an accounting and management background, and have spent years working with the wonderful community that is Orange Christian School. As a family we love being part of the Molong Baptist Church community

and Waratahs Junior Football Club; and I personally love playing tennis at any given opportunity. In the week just gone, I was privileged to be part of the team supporting the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal and the valuable work that they do in serving the community.

We certainly now live in the age of “grants”. It seems that nothing ever happens today unless there’s a grant of some sort involved. Last week I heard of another grant that our Council secured to extend the Regional Gallery, $4 million plus would you believe? Before that I heard Council had secured $25,000 (I think) to run a homosexual festival in Orange next year. Then there’s road grants to repair local roads and extend a distributor road, a grant to do something in the Ploughman’s wetland area, a grant to build a public toilet somewhere, and I think we’ve applied for a grant to trim trees around Orange, and so it goes on. To be honest, I’m quite sick of it. Whatever happened to the days when we got things done, simply because they made good sense and we just went about making them happen despite any hurdles? Grants like this are the way most things are done these days and I guess there’s not much use in me trying to make too much of an issue about that. There is however, a type of grant that I really do think government’s need to think about. It’s those grants or funding opportunities that are supposed to help people who are struggling for one reason or another, or the ones that are supposed to improve things in some way. We’ve all heard of the government funding schemes that are designed to help farmers who are on their knees, or small business owners who are struggling to keep their doors open and a new one where they are offering regional publishers

like me grant money “to improve the quality of local journalism”. I can’t say it any more respectfully that this, those who dreamed up these schemes must live on another planet because their methodology is at best flawed, and at worst simply stupid. Space doesn’t allow too much elaboration, but I think I can make the point in a few words. They offer farmers who haven’t a penny to bless themselves loan arrangements when they need a handout. How can enabling a farmer simply to take on more debt be helpful? One of the incentives they offer battling small business owners is up to $10,000 towards employing someone on a full wage for a year. How is that going to help an employer who simply can’t afford the balance of the wage (up to say $40,000) in the first place. The only employer likely to take this up is one who is not in trouble to start with, or who is going to employ someone anyway and if the government is silly enough to pay them, they’ll take it. With the Regional Publishers grant scheme, they’re offering bucket loads of money but when I looked at it, I discovered you can use the money for a number of things but one thing you can’t spend it on was staff or wages. It’s a well-known fact that the quality of journalism is suffering mainly because fewer journalists are now expected to cover the ground. How you improve journalism without including journalists in the equation is beyond me. I say it’s time for Governments to re-think some of their strategies, what do you say?

Love of tea

two-minute noodles and loose-leaf tea!” After graduating, Katja took a job in Dubbo (where she met her now husband) and continued to blend teas as a hobby. But soon it became a whole lot more. “About 18 months working in Juvenile Justice I decided it wasn’t for me,” she said. “I’d started blending again as a bit of a stress relief or to fill down time and my husband said, you’re blending too much! We’re not drinking it and you’ve gifted it to everybody we know. He said you either need to switch hobbies or do something about it. So, I left my job and went into tea full-time.” That was five years ago now and Katja’s business, Tea Karts, has grown from simply selling at farmers’ markets to supplying wholesale to cafes throughout the Central West and selling online across Australia. And over the weekend Katja hosted her first tea festival here in Orange, sharing her knowledge and love of tea at workshops and tastings. “I like the stories behind other people’s tea

atja Williams has always loved tea, but never imagined she would turn her passion into a thriving business. Born and raised on a small hobby farm north of Orange, Katja grew up in a family a coffee drinkers. “I knew from a young age coffee wasn’t something I enjoyed or liked and so I started drinking tea, it was probably Lipton’s teabag or something,” laughed Katja. While studying Criminology at University in Armidale, Katja discovered a small tea shop and it was there she was exposed to the truly diverse world of tea. “There is just so much depth of flavour, that you get from different loose-leaf types, whether it is different regions or different blends and that is where everything started,” she said. “I used to buy little bits and pieces there and I started blending my own. Not having much money at uni, I basically lived off

companies, behind why they like what they like and the regions and the history and the story behind tea, So the tea festival I’ve created here is to dive deep into a lot of that. It’s more than just tasting tea, it is about sharing and experiencing tea together,” she said. While the knowledge and appreciation of coffee has certainly grown in Australia over the last 20 years, Katja would like to see more people put aside their teabags and explore the rich and diverse flavours of quality looseleaf tea. “I think the knowledge, the history and the traditions behind tea drinking have been a little left by the wayside and I’d really like to bring that back too,” she said “What I like about tea is everyone has their little quicks, their little traditions and it’s not quick. I think in our world we are getting faster and faster more distracted by our devices, but when you catch up with family or friends and someone has a pot of tea on the table you always take that little bit longer, it is always more relaxed.”

communication between all parties. If the sale is residential, the agent cannot commence marketing until a complete contract is in place. Your solicitor will also deal with your financier at all relevant times to ensure a smooth and timely mortgage discharge process (where relevant). To prepare a contract for sale your solicitor will liaise with council to order required documents such as a zoning certificate and drainage plans and will also liaise with relevant authorities for title searches and deposited plans and any easements, covenants or restrictions etc that may also apply. Please provide all relevant information concerning the property to your solicitor to assist in the contract preparation for all building works in the last 7 years (or earlier if you have them) such as building certificates, final occupation, inspections, approvals for development approvals and surveys.

TECH MEET UPS GAINING MOMENTUM BY JONATHAN ROE

ocal tech enthusiasts and entrepreneurs are teaming up to help grow Orange businesses for the 21st Century. When local famer Hamish Munro was trying to get his tech start-up off the ground, he knew very little about where to find help. But today, he and a group of likeminded entrepreneurs are working together, building a community to give new start-ups a leg up. â€œThere were a few of us who were floating around, not really connected and working out of the kitchen rather than coming together and talking about the greater issues or how to help each other,â€? said Hamish. â€œWe saw there was an opportunity to do something together. If we were like this, there must be other people we are unaware of and theyâ€™re unaware of us. So that was really the start of it.â€?

Since the NSW Regional Tech and Entrepreneurship meetup began last March, they have organised six events, bringing together local tech enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, business owners, investors and venture capitalists. RECONCILIATION WEEK AT GLENROI BY MELISE COLEMAN Last Monday, Glenroi Heights Public School celebrated Reconciliation Week, bringing together students, teachers and the greater community. Although the day brought with it, rain/snow it didn’t deter the march or the children’s enthusiasm and rightfully so. The entire Glenroi school community took part in the walk around the school and they were joined by students from Clergate Public School, Bowen Public, Canobolas and Orange High School, as well as teachers and community members. This year’s theme was ‘Grounded in Truth Walk Together with Courage’. Indigenous coordinator at Glenroi Heights Public School, Kylie Greatbatch explained, “Every year it gets bigger and that was the plan, I said that eight years ago ‘It’s going to get big’ so it’s very exciting. Unfortunately, with the weather we had to cancel our soccer games, but we have a dance party, sausage sizzle and Aunty Vic made some damper for the kids to try.” “The kids really enjoy seeing the community come together and knowing it is a respectful celebration of coming together and standing proud together.” Year 6 student Bianca Howell added, “It’s important for us to acknowledge the different cultures and to come together with the community. Tell us a little about the types of services you provide?

I provide clinical hypnotherapy and coaching, so it is a combined service offering. I also do other things: Reiki, energy work, intuitive mentoring and guidance.

What type of problems do people seek out hypnotherapy for? It ranges from anxiety disorders to depression, through to help quitting smoking and dealing with phobias such as a fear of spiders, birds, or flying. I also work with a lot of people to overcome emotional eating and weight loss.

How do you go about treating someone who wishes to lose weight?

THE IDEA HERE IS TO GET YOUR MIND IN THE RIGHT PLACE AND THEN THE REST OF IT FALLS INTO PLACE.

A lot of the time the reasons we overeat are not clear cut; they will have an emotional driver. So, people eat to suppress feelings, to feel safe, or to be invisible, they eat for comfort, rather than self soothe. I use trance and other strategies to unpack what it is that’s going on behind the scenes, what’s driving them to overeating.

So, what does trance work involve? Being in trance is a nice relaxing state, it is like relaxed focused concentration. I work with a client to get them into that trance state and then they are open to suggestion which helps to reframe their thinking. You can look and examine issues and get insights that you wouldn’t have had before. The human brain is very plastic, it can develop new neural pathways and that’s part of what we are aiming to do

when we are using trance.

You mentioned you use strategies other than trance work as well? Yes, I use things like an emotional trigger diary; getting the client to develop their own self-awareness so they are more empowered and start to see the connection between the emotions and how they manage them. It’s about teaching them tools for self-regulation, mindfulness practices and other things they can do themselves, like journaling about their feelings. A lot of the stuff I do is about supporting the client to go away and do it for themselves and learn to take responsibility for their own emotional regulation.

Why would someone seek out hypnotherapy for weight loss over more traditional approaches? Often, I see people when they’ve tried everything else. They’ve been on yo-yo diets, or they’ve tried stuff and it’s failed, and they’ve gone right back to where they were or sometimes worse than before. Just working hard on a diet doesn’t deal with your mindset. So, you make the physical changes, but you won’t be able to sustain them because the mindset wasn’t there. The idea here is to get your mind in the right place and then the rest of it falls into place.

We’re Moving On Are all topics exhausted? I fear there’s nothing left to write about! Well, they do say that “no news is good news”. But, after 476 columns for this fine family magazine, I’m a bit terrified that a lot of my material has just bitten the dust all at once. Probably like most people who put pen to paper for one reason another, I’ll think of a topic to write about whilst I’m in the shower, or out for a run, or cutting wood, or more often than not, while driving. Making a mental note of the topic is becoming more and more important as I get older, and I’m sure I’ve forgotten more topics than I remember. Nevermind, hopefully they’ll bounce around in my head and come back to front of mind sometime. WooHoo! No more elections for a while! Please, please, please, let there be nothing to write about in this area for a loooong time. No more backstabbing pollies, no more blame games, no more onions, no more of any of it. I hope. With an informal vote rate of over 6% (and who knows how big the donkey vote was??), I think it’s pretty clear we are all ready to move on. To hear that Clive wasted over 60 million to try and get some power is just plain wrong. Plain sad. But I don’t have an answer about combatting that. Now that little Archie has come into the world, there can’t be any more reasons for us to go ‘Royal mad’, can there? I’d love to think we could all spend our time doing better things than swooning over the privileged people. For those who know what I’m talking about, adventures in the world of Westeros recently came to a thundering end (no spoilers given here). One less thing for the educated viewer to worry about. There’s sure to be another brilliant television series come along, but we had to wait more than half a decade after ‘Breaking Bad’ finished before ‘Game Of Thrones’ took up all our time.

It might be a while until we are again singing the praises of characters like Jon, Dani, Tyrion and the gang. Thanks for providing escapism and great writing material. I did promise to never again mention his name in my jottings, but the chairthrowing antics from Nick Kyrgios (which saw him disqualified, yay!) are so unAustralian it’s ridiculous. The fact that tennis Australia actually paid for much of the teenage years of this guy flies in the face of all things good about our country. My fingers are crossed that we’ll just never hear from this guy again. I’ll happily avoid writing about him again. I guess the same goes for Israel Folau. They told him not to. He defied them. They turfed him. Simple. It’s not about free speech. He hid behind ‘free speech’ to cause misery to those different to him. Shame on him. Hopefully we’ll all get to move on from that kind of garbage too. No place for it in the lucky country.

Calare celebrated over 20 volunteers last week, one of them was much loved, Julie Mulvey. General Manager of Calare Aged Care Danny Oakenfull said, “Places like this wouldn’t run if we didn’t have volunteers, they are an essential part of our service and we are extremely appreciative of all the work our volunteers do, with that, Julie Mulvey certainly is important and certainly is appreciated.” Julie has been a part of the Calare Nursing Home community for nine years, “I come in on a Friday afternoon and play word games

with the residents. I was always interested in Calare Nursing Home and I thought it was a good way to get my foot in the door, so I began volunteering and then started training as well, so now I work here and volunteer on my Fridays off. “The residents enjoy it so much, we have a lot of fun together, the word games make them think, they find it a challenging and they absolutely love it.”

Since February, the committed cast have been crafting and honing their performance of this wonderful show which really does appeal to all ages. The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a

nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again. Even grownups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “anything can happen if you let it.” Director of the show, Peter Cooper said, “The musical has been so much fun to prepare over the past four months. Our young actors have worked as a team: acting, singing, dancing and just enjoying putting this wonderful show

together for our audiences.” Hannah Pierce (Mary Poppins) added, “Through this incredible experience, it has been amazing to step back and watch how we all work so well together as a team! It has definitely been a spoonful of sugar!” The magic will take place at the Orange Civic Theatre on Friday June 7, at 7:00pm and Saturday June 8, at 5:00pm. ORANGE CITY BOWLING CLUB ~ CELEBRATING 120 YEARS

A little history... 120 years of history takes us back quite some time and a lot has happened. The following includes a number of extracts from a book titled The History of The Orange City Bowling Club Ltd that was produced to celebrate the Club’s 100 years in 1999. The book was written by Kerrin Cook in conjunction with Robert A Kidd. During 1899 several members of the Orange community, some of whom would have enjoyed a game of bowls back in their home country of England or Scotland discussed the possibility of forming a bowling club in Orange. Bowls had become a popular sport in Sydney since the game was started in the 1870s and there were many clubs in the Sydney area and also around Newcastle. Bathurst had formed a club in 1895 and was the first club west of the Blue Mountains. It was felt that the time was right for Orange to become the second club west of the mountains. A public meeting was called on Wednesday 18 November 1899, and 21 enthusiastic supporters of the game attended. These were Messrs James Bonner,

George Hawk, A H Davis, W Lamrock, A J Maude, J L King, W J Stabback, S Harris, G J Roberts, C W McFarlane, H H Lee, T S Pearce, P J Flanagan, W Tanner, P Smythe, G de V Pilcher, A Caldwell, H W Larance, Mr Ashdown, John Hale and J Chiplin. Orange Council was approached, and as the Mayor had been the Chairman of the meeting, the new club was granted land at the northern end of Robertson Park, land that Blackman’s Swamp Creek ran through. The Club was established and provided four rinks. Many years later, after several major floods the creek was piped and the area filled in and levelled and incorporated into the lawn area of the Park. An increasing membership saw two extra rinks added and by 1905 there were 75 members. The club continued to flourish until the end of the First World War, when the membership began to climb again, and it was felt that the Club needed larger premises. The Bank of New South Wales building in Anson Street was for sale and it was decided to purchase it and also to build

The Club in 2019 Orange City Bowling Club is certainly a club for today, offering facilities and services that meet a variety of community needs and expectations at both a sporting and social level. Members and guests are treated to a great experience no matter what the occasion, whether a quite drink with friends, a family meal, a social game of bowls or mini golf, taking in one of the regular “shows” the club hosts, attending a business function or celebrating a wedding. Modern, comfortable and spacious facilities set the scene while a team of dedicated staff provide friendly and professional service at every level.

a croquet green. The Bowling Club moved to the Anson Street site in 1922. After the Second World War it was felt that the Club needed a larger site, and a larger clubhouse and it was also decided to change the Club’s name to ‘’Orange City Bowling Club’’, this was around 1947. Around 1967 the Club opened at its current site, known then as the National Park site. In September 1972 it was decided to extend the club house and to build two elevated greens with car parking space underneath. This work was estimated to cost about $900,000, and to finance this it was decided to sell the Anson street property. The property was sold at auction on 16 March 1973 for $73,000 to a consortium including Coles, Burns Philp and Tooth & Co. A multi-million dollar shopping complex was planned for the site, and after some delays during 1974, the building of the Coles Supermarket and K-Mart store was eventually completed.

120 Years of Memories

For your reading enjoyment, here is a random collection of history, trivia and memories from the Club’s archives.

Bowling is one of the oldest outdoor sports and was played in Rome during Caesar’s time, being known as bocce.

The game of bowls came to Orange in the year 1899. The Orange Bowling Club, as it was known, opened with a membership of twelve. The first expense was said to be $88 (Forty four pounds back then) for laying down the ground, turfing it etc. Officers of the Orange Bowling Club 19051906 were H. J. Leary, W.B.Bernasconi, H.H.Lee, A.H.Davis, T.G. Dalton. In 1905 Charles J. Smith, and Dr Fitzpatrick were made Life Members for their untiring service to the club since its inception. Around 1919, there were two clubs – Orange Bowling Club and Orange Club Limited which was formed as sports and recreation club. During May 1919, the Directors of Orange Club Ltd. agreed to purchase the Bank of New South Wales site in Anson Street and became affiliated with Orange Bowling Club. That same year they also built a croquet green. The Bowling Club moved to the Anson Street site in 1922 and remained under the control of the Orange Club Limited until 1935. Club President between 1921-1924 and 1929 – 1930 was F.E. Bernasconi. On January 4, 1946 the Committee moved to secure a lease of land known as “Rose Garden” at National Park for the purpose of providing new bowling greens and a new clubhouse. On January 17, 1947, $6000 (today’s money) was offered by the Bowling Club to secure the entire assets of the Orange Club Ltd. The offer was rejected. A threepenny poker machine was installed on 2 August 1947, and the Club joined the Registered Club’s Association for an annual fee of one guinea.

The first game of bowls under lights was played at Anson Street in 1959. On 6 June 1956, a meeting was convened by the president of the Orange City Bowling Club, Mr D Harrington, that the Women’s Club be formed. The Club needed 16 players to form a Women’s Club but 30 were present at the meeting. 24

During the 1950s and 1960’s movies were held every Sunday night with Harold Cox the projectionist. In 1980 member Bob Kidd offered his badge collection (about 3000 badges from all over the world) to the club and to act as custodian of his “Badge Board”. No. 1 green was dedicated to Arnold Carr in 1969. Mick Radnedge won the Club Singles in 1989-90 when only 26 years old. In 1982, the member’s dining room was converted into a Chinese Restaurant (The Golden Bowl) and opened to the public. The menu consisted of 120 Chinese and Australian dishes.

Bob Kidd joined the Orange City Bowling Club in 1965 and held the position of Director for 18 years.

was on 25th May 1975 by Mr Don Isaacs. Orange City Bowling club was one of the two clubs in New South Wales with five greens. In 1977 the Royal NSW Bowling Association honoured the club by choosing it to be the venue for an Inter-state Match between NSW and Victoria. This was held on 4th May in 1977. David Brown was president of Orange City Bowling Club in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1987 and 1988. In 1999 the Orange City Men’s Bowling club celebrated their Centenary. January 1949 the club built a new 37ft bar at the cost of £15. Two paraplegic bowls players visited the club in 1972 for a charity match to raise funds to send Eric and Don to the Paraplegic World Series Bowls Championships in England in 1973.

TAB facilities were commenced on 7 December 1993. In 1985 Mick Radnedge was the Club’s Novice and Minor Singles Champion.

Orange City Women’s Bowling club was formed in 1956. The club had been associated with the NSW Bowling Association since its inception and hosted several intra-state teams. In July 1950, Mick Martin aged 77 skippered his team in the finals of the Clubs Fours Championship to a resounding win of 32 to 16. No. 2 Green dedicated as Robbie Robson Memorial Green on 5 May 1957.

Around 1996-97 automatic front doors were installed, and the foyer area was revamped to make more room. The Club held Cherry Blossom Carnivals between 1966 and 1995 and players came from near and far to play and enjoy the friendship. The Women’s Club had three major Pennant wins – in 1982-83 the No. 5 Pennant team won the Canobolas District Competition, in 1984-85 the No. 3 Pennant team won the State Title, and in 1992 the No. 2 Pennant team also won the State Title. During 1947-75 Orange was host to the Q.R.I.S.B.C which comprised 40 bowlers playing against Orange City. The Orange City Bowling Club is now claimed to be the largest bowling club of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

For the year ended 30th June 1995 the operating revenue was $1,681,475.

In 1982 Orange City won the No. 3, No 5 and No. 6 Pennants in the Western District competitions, the first time in the Club’s history that they had won three pennants in one year. In the early days of the club, members carried out all the managerial duties such as secretarial work and bar management. The first move to have a liquor licence for the Orange City Bowling club was in September 1946. No.5 green dedicated to D C (Darry) Donohue in 1981. The official opening of the Clubs extensions

120 Years of Memories In 1997 a new weatherproof entrance was erected and landscaped.

Daphne Brown was President of The Orange City Women’s Bowling Club in 1977-1979.

Golden Bowl Chinese Restaurant was opened on 18 November 1982 by Mayor of Orange, Ald. Dick Niven.

In 1982 Orange City won No 3, No 5 and No 6 Pennants in the Western District competitions, the first time in the Club’s history (in that time).

The club continued to flourish until the end of the First World War, when the membership began to climb again, and it was felt that the Club needed larger premises. During the Second World War the Club continued to prosper. In July 1996 the auditorium renovations were completed with a new separate poker machine room. The Club registered under the Companies Act, and on 20 September 1949 it was granted a Certificate of Incorporation. Jill Wade was the founder of the Orange City Croquet Club.

In 1997 History was made when four of the Club’s Bowlers, Betty Jacobs, Colleen McArdle, Pam Gersbach and Margaret Brady were the first women to play in the Golden Eagle Tournament.

The Lindeman Cup played in 1965, a competition played between Orange City and Newstead Clubs.

Outstanding Members Numbered among the Club’s Outstanding Members are the following 15, these featured in the Club’s History Book Celebrating 100 years - 1899-1999.

putting money away in savings accounts for them later in life. There are a few problems with this strategy… The money doesn’t grow. When you combine the impacts of inflation, tax and low interest rates, chances are that any money being saved is actually going backwards. For example, if you can get 3% on your savings, lose 1% in tax and prices are rising by 2.5% per annum, the net result is a real return of MINUS 0.5%. That’s not doing a whole lot to help the kids in the future! It would actually be much better to pay that money off the mortgage. If you’re paying interest on the mortgage at 4%, then any money paid off the mortgage is effectively getting a return of 4% and that return is tax-free! This then opens other avenues to

often have people come to see me who have a goal of saving or investing money for their kids. The reasons vary… sometimes it’s with a view to paying for their education, in other cases, it’s with a goal of helping kids buy a house in the future. Or it may just be to have some money to give them a leg up when they reach adulthood. Done sensibly, this is an easy way to accelerate wealth creation by tax-effectively investing in things that grow. A savings account will never grow, it will only earn a little interest. Shares and property grow in the long term and if you combine them with low fees, diversification and time, you’re on a winning ride. There are many other things we could go into, but in the time that I have your attention, I want to focus on one other key plank when it comes to sensible strategies for people who care about their kids… protection. Life can tick along pretty nicely when you and your family have a regular income. However, if that regular income

stopped or was severely reduced because a bread winner died or could not work because they were sick or injured, then not only will the family be forced to go through a tough emotional time, but they will potentially be financially ruined. Things like life insurance and income protection are no-brainers for people who care about their partner and kids. As you build a wealth pyramid for you and your family, these types of insurances should form the foundation so that if disaster strikes, the whole pyramid doesn’t come tumbling down. In saying that, you can most definitely have too much insurance and there’s reason to be suspicious of any business who is incentivised to sell you more insurance because they get paid a commission (not to mention that if

commissions are involved you’ll be paying 30% more in premiums each and every year!). Wealth creation and wealth protection go hand-in-hand. If you need a help with either, give me a call.

Kerrie recently found out that she has been selected to exhibit her products this June at Handmade Canberra — a curated quarterly market that celebrates the best of Australian design and produce. “I’m really looking forward to Handmade Canberra and seeing what happens from there,” said Kerrie. “There are 25,000 people that go to those markets and 800 exhibitors on the waiting list. It’s going to be very exciting to network and look at the other stall holders and learn from them. I just find it all very exciting and I’m really looking forward to Sweet Treats Connection being involved.” Kerrie’s dream is to see her business grow enough to employ someone else locally to help her in the kitchen. While she hopes to see her business succeed, for Kerrie the cooking is its own reward. “I just feel like it truly represents me as a person and I love it that it is not something I’ve bought, it is something I’ve created myself,” said Kerrie. “And I just love the thought of customers taking home my goodies to share with family and friends.”

“I loved cooking with my family as I was growing up and family and friends have always loved what I’ve made. Now I’ve turned my passion and my love for cooking into my business.” Two years ago, after a bit of pressure from family and friends, Kerrie took the leap and founded her home-business Sweet Treats Connection — selling biscuits, slices and fruit cakes at markets and through local cafes. “I had thought about it for quite a while,” said Kerrie. “Then I devised the name and took it to the next level. It’s been really exciting starting something from scratch and I only wish I had started doing this a lot earlier. If I had started 10 years ago that would have been fantastic!” Each of Kerrie’s recipes has been tweaked and perfected over many years. She said her fruit cakes alone have been worked on for the past 11 years. “I’m really happy with the them now. The secret is in the balance of all the fruit and spice and combinations of them, but it is really working well. A number of gentlemen have said that my fruit cake is the only treat they allow themselves to have,” she said.

The Waratahs football team was one of four from the Orange district in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were Our Boys, Waratahs, Tannery and Lucknow. Rebuild time for overcrowded “demountable central” School

It’s onwards and upwards for Milthorpe’s historic public school; undergoing a transformation from “demountable central” to a whole school rebuild in the near future. The 150-year-old school was recently approved for upgrading and extension as part of the NSW Governments $6 billion school building program. And for Relieving Principal, Penny Granger, and the pupils and teachers at the overcrowded school, the refurbishment could not have come at a better time. “We will be able to get rid of the eight demountable classrooms which will be removed; and the four permanent classrooms in the old heritage block will be refurbished,” Ms Granger explained. Millthorpe has been experiencing growing pains over a number of years; the school population tripling over two decades from about 110 to more than 300 as new families have tree-changed to the beautiful village to

enjoy both its natural beauty and proximity to Orange, Blayney and Bathurst. “This will be a bricks-and-mortar build; all architecturally-designed,” Ms Granger explained. The proliferation of demountable at the school began about 15 years ago with a row of the supposedly-temporary structures now sitting on what had once been play area for pupils at the K-6 school. “They’re a bit drafty and a bit cold in winter and hot in summer so they use a lot of energy; they’re essentially ‘silos of learning’ so there is little interaction between different classrooms,” Ms Granger added. “We’re currently in the early consultation phase — we want the classrooms to be future-focused…there will be full community consultation on the new facilities,” she said. Teachers and support staff are also being served by the new rebuild with the crowded staffrooms and facilities to get a new setting. “There will be all new staff facilities, library toilets, and administration. We’re bursting at the seams at the moment,” Ms Granger concluded.

Wood-bank arrives in time for Winter chills Orange City Council’s new ‘Wood-bank’ initiative is up and running. Orange City Councillor Glenn Taylor says the new program will operate through the Foodcare Orange organisation operating out of the Glenroi Community Centre in Garema Road. “It’s clear that there are families in Orange dong it tough, and at this time of year a load of firewood could make all the difference,” Cr Glenn Taylor said. “This possibility came to light after a couple of instances of trees being felled in public reserves. If people are cutting down trees to keep warm, then that points to a community need that we can do something about. “Families in need in Orange are going to Foodcare, and there they’ll get the groceries they’ll need to help them through a tough patch. Now they’ll also be able to get a delivery of firewood. “The quality of the firewood is an important factor in this program. We’ve looked into it and the best way forward was to bring a couple of commercial wood suppliers on board. When a family asks for firewood at the Foodbank office, staff will take their details and arrange for a load of wood to be delivered.” Foodcare Orange President Karen Boyde welcomed the initiative. “Foodcare meets an important need in the Orange community to help local families,” Karen Boyde said. “At Foodcare, there are opportunities to offer support, as well as meeting a family’s immediate needs of keeping food on the table. “ “This initiative by Orange City Council will add an extra layer of practical support particularly at this time of year.” Orange City Council put the wood-bank proposal out to tender and reached an agreement with two local commercial suppliers to make deliveries. The council has allocated $5000 as the program’s initial funding, enough to supply the first 100 deliveries of wood. Council staff will monitor the demand for wood through the program and will review the ongoing costs of the initiative in due course.
