Anyone who thinks there’s not much to do in Orange most weeks, must have their eyes closed. Over recent weeks there’s been one event after another, and it’s set to continue. Coming up we also have the Orange Show and the Rotary Orange Daybreak Technology Expo among others, and although not a highlight for many people, you can throw in a Federal Election weekend as well. All in all, there’s always something to keep us entertained in Orange and right now, the Colour City is also putting on its annual colour show with trees all over the city bursting with autumn colour. It’s hard not to marvel at the beauty we experience at this time of each year.

How very lucky are we in Orange?

It’s another feature packed issue of OC Life you have before you and there are a couple of things that I’d like to draw your attention to. We are sponsoring a lucky door prize at the Rotary Club’s Technology Expo and it’s worth winning. It’s return air flights for two, to either Melbourne or Brisbane flying with Fly Corporate. Entry is free to the Expo so make sure you get an entry coupon at the door when you go along. The change to our TV Guide last week has caused a few readers to be unhappy or confused. We understand that but be assured the number who will benefit from our decision will be at least a hundredfold more than the few who feel disadvantaged by our decision. Most decisions made in business will disadvantage a few people at least, it’s unavoidable but make them we must if we are to keep improving what we do for the benefit of the most readers. This is a story that will touch readers for a variety of reasons, not the least being it’s about a person and an organisation that cares greatly about others who are far less fortunate than most of us. Read the story, appreciate what’s being done and then reflect on just how blessed we are in this City to have the wonderful health facilities and services that we do.

Two weeks ago Kylie Duncan returned home from her sixth trip to Nepal working as a Theatre Nurse for the ‘Open Heart International Burn’s Surgery Project’. Along with Kylie, a team unit of 30 health professionals from around NSW, including another from Orange also made the trip over. The ‘Open Heart International Burns Surgery Project’ (OHI) provides vital medical care to those in Nepal who would otherwise go without. Based at the Scheer Memorial Adventist Hospital in Banepa, the project provides reconstructive surgery for burns victims, particularly treatment for disabling contractures. Burn injuries are a major problem in Nepal because many families use open fires for cooking and heating. The large number of burns have overwhelmed available health services leaving many to endure lifelong pain and disability, this is where the OHI come in. Kylie’s first trip was in 2010, “My first year I was so blown away by the hospital, it was incredibly basic in terms of what we are taught in Australia. One of the first things that struck me was the health system, for example in Nepal if you have an injury of any kind, say you break your leg, you would go to the emergency department and tell them you have broken your leg, they are then going to invoice you for how much the theatre is going to cost, how much your stay is going to cost, they are going to give you a list of all of the things you are going to need, your medication, your bandages. You then have to hobble off, buy all of that stuff, pay at the cashier’s office and then they will let you in. So, if you don’t pay you are not getting treated. The Mission Hospital is different, everyone gets treated, it relies 100% on international donations, we pay for their treatment and their stay.”

Craig When I was in school my mate lent me an MxPx tape, a bit of punk rock, and I just fell in love with it and started drumming on everything. My uncle had a really, really old drum kit, so mum thought we’d get a hold of that so I could get through this little fad — but it just never stopped. I’d practice for hours and hours every day and started a band with my mates, which we did all through high school. After year 12, I went and did a music course at TAFE, but you can’t do much on a drum kit as far as scales and compositions, so I picked up a guitar and then learnt the piano. I just fell in love with music, particularly with the recording aspect of it.

So, in 2008 I moved to Brisbane and got my audio engineering degree and then when my wife and I fell pregnant with our first baby, we moved back to Orange and I started Dotted Eight Studio. I don’t know that I thought there would be the need for a studio, as much as I just really wanted to do it, to be quite honest. My mum admitted to me the other day that she had wanted me to get over it and get a real job, because music will never take you anywhere, but with a lot of luck and hard work I was able make it all happen and now I’m doing this full time. Music is a pretty personal thing and I’ve found one of the most important aspects is building relationships with musicians

and artists to make them comfortable that I can be someone they can trust, to hand their baby over to me to record. Everyone I talk to is surprised there is enough recording work in Orange to sustain something like this, but there actually are a lot of musos here. It is pretty unreal for a small town and there’s some really good talent, really good songwriters particularly, which I love working with. It would be great to get a couple of guys to that next level, where they can break into mainstream radio, wider than just Orange. I think there is definitely the talent here.

It’s so easy to just sail along in life and be oblivious to what’s happening around us. I have to say that last week I realised that I’m no better than anyone else in that, and I too am guilty of missing the point sometimes. The issue in this instance is domestic violence. Orange City Life is regularly receiving press releases etc. about domestic violence issues, along with many others about other growing social problems like mental health, homelessness, everything cancer and so on. In my case, I’ve decided to filter many of these because I felt our magazine was starting to become overrun with bad news. That said, I was stopped in my tracks last week when I read some statistics on domestic violence in a political brochure. Before I give you these, let me also tell you that domestic violence is described as “a global public health problem of epidemic proportions.” If after reading that you’re thinking “yeah, right….”, hold that thought until you read this. These are from Domestic Violence Statistics in Australia from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and other credible sources. Be prepared to be stopped in your tracks like me – • On average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner. • 1 in 4 women have experienced emotional abuse by a current or former partner since the age of 15. • 1 in 5 women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15. • 85% of Australian women have been sexually harassed.

• Almost 40% of women continued to experience violence from their partner while temporarily separated. • 1 in 6 women have experienced stalking since the age of 15. • Statistics indicate that domestic violence rates are higher in rural and regional NSW. My very first thought, having read that was, is that possible? Can men possibly be as bad as these statistics suggest? If yes, which clearly is the case, and as a man, I don’t know what to say to that. I feel ashamed to know that so many men are letting the team down with such disgraceful behaviour. I’m truly stuck for the right words to say. Of course, about here, most commentators would ask “what are we going to do about it?” I think it’s way past that. We need to start turning this around yesterday! Women deserve far better from us blokes and I for one will be making my feelings heard longer and louder from here on. Folks, this is a problem that as a community we can actually do something about, and being passive about it won’t achieve anything worthwhile. I’m open to ideas but let me give you one thing you can do in the immediate future to start the ball rolling. We have a Federal Election coming up on May 18. That gives us a chance to really rattle the cages of candidates and make our feelings known on this extremely frightening and crucial issue. Let’s do it! At the very least, consider candidates who have domestic violence high on their “must address” priority list.

Local farmers feeling the pinch from this unprecedented drought should know their plight has not gone unnoticed in other parts of the country. Hearing tales of farmers doing it tough in our part of the world, McLaren Vale winemaker Mark Maxwell felt moved to do something about it. “We were hearing stories about the drought and the people of Orange and Dubbo were coming up on the news as being really in hard times,” said Mark. “We got some people to come along put some money in then ended up with a couple thousand dollars. It’s not very much in the scheme of things, but we thought it’s a good thing to do. If every medium sized company in Australia did it, we could go a long way getting a bit of hay from here to there.” No knowing how to get the money to where it could be used

best, Mark brought it up with a Dubbo IGA Manager, who stocks his products. “It started with me asking how their Maxwell Mead stocks were and then they put me onto Rochelle Ashcroft in Orange.” Rochelle, who’s Let’s Make Better charity distributes thousands of dollars each year to local causes, decided the money might be used by Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak, who are partnered with Heifer Station Wines for the recent Feast for Farmers fundraiser. The donation brings to total raised through the Feast for Farmers to nearly $42,000. “It is a great way of getting the money to the farmers,” said Rochelle, who passed on the money to Rotary Daybreak on Friday. “We are really grateful to Mark for putting a bit of money out this way.”

That’s a question local speech pathologist and Sydney University PhD candidate Penelope Monroe has been exploring during an eight-week pilot study at aged care facility Uniting Wontama. Residents have been keen participants in the study, which has involved bi-weekly two-hour choir sessions, with regular data collected on language skills and quality of life. For Penny, the program has been a chance to combine two of her passions: music and research. “I’m a classical singer and choral conductor by training, that was my previous career. Then I studied speech pathology and rediscovered my love of research while I was doing my clinical masters and thought about how to combine both aspects,” said Penny, who works as a speech pathologist at the Orange Hospital. “There is a huge amount of research that shows music is really, really good for us and my anecdotal experience of being a choral conductor for many years was observing just how positive being in a group setting and interacting with the music was for the singers. So, I wanted to explore

James’ Vineyard Tours began in the Hunter Valley in 2005, when James decided that what was on offer just wasn’t up the right standard. “We had a bed and breakfast and I was buying tours for our guests and I wasn’t that happy with what they were getting,” said James. “I thought, I could do better and so that’s how it all started, and it took off from there.” In 2017, the couple followed friends to Orange and brought their business with them. “We knew quite a few people here, so it took off quite quickly,” said James. After their long experience in the Hunter Valley, James and Adrienne can see a lot of potential in Orange’s growing tourism industry. “We just love it here: the wine scene and the tourism scene here is just taking off which is really fantastic,” said Adrienne “I think it is so much more welcoming and there are a lot more restaurant options and foodie options than in the Hunter. It is getting bigger all the time, but now we need to do other things.” James and Adrienne were going to simply sell their two tour vehicles, but then thought it might be an opportunity for someone looking to get into the local industry. “We’ve built up this established website and recognised business and it seems a shame to just throw it away — so we thought we’d see if anyone is interested,” said Adrienne. “It is not going to be a huge turnover, but it is ideally suited for someone who has just relocated from Sydney who might want a business.”

“I just absolutely love knitting and crocheting, but I think what I like the most is that it benefits someone,” said Orange Purlers coordinator Dianne Percy. The Orange Purlers are a 50-strong group of local knitters who work tirelessly throughout the year to make blankets and beanies for those less fortunate. Last year the group distributed 606 blankets and have already created 115 blankets in the past few months. “We mostly do rugs and they go to about 85 different organisations in Australia plus overseas to disaster areas, et cetera — they’ll go wherever they are needed,” said Dianne. “A lot go locally to Housing Plus or out to the hospital, plus we do hats for heroes, that is for the armed forces, and we also do

hats for the homeless in Orange and beanies for premie babies.” While the Purlers are on track to beat last year’s blanket total, they could really use a hand and are asking for donations of 8-ply wool or acrylic yarn to continue their valuable work. “We desperately need more donations. because a lot of the ladies are pensioners and it is very expensive to make a rug,” said Dianne. While full balls of yarn are preferred the Purlers will happily accept any leftover yarn, which can be the joined together with a magic knot and put to good use. “We get all the tiny scraps and turn them into balls — we call

them cupcakes. The girls wind them together and we end up with these lovely balls and beautiful rugs,” said Dianne. Donations can be made at the Orange City Library, where the Purlers meet every Thursday morning, or you can come and say hi this Saturday at their annual ‘Knit-in’. “Our annual Knit in is to show people what we do and to try and get some more wool donations,” said Dianne. “We also teach knitting and crocheting, so if you want to learn, we can show you and we give you a pattern and needles or if you don’t have them yourself. Everyone’s welcome!” The Orange Purlers’ annual Knit will be held at Orange City Library on Saturday 11 May from 11am until 3pm.

OAGS celebration BY MELISE COLEMAN There was much to celebrate at Anglican Grammar School (OAGS) last week as they officially opened their new hardcourt area, unveiling its name 'The Hangar’. The new 1250 square metre space was dubbed 'The Hangar’ in respect of Orange’s history of Aviation. The 1250-square-metre space hosts a synthetic gel surface, with courts for basketball, netball and tennis. It will be a place for students to come together and a place to play during wet weather, in the future OAGS is also looking for the space to be utilised for creative and performing arts. As well as the unveiling and in front of many local dignitaries, OAGS took the opportunity to induct their Year 12 students, the commissioning of Primary and Secondary School captains and the commissioning of new staff. Congratulations Orange Anglican Grammar School, the school community have much to look forward to in the new school term.

Take this one Oaktree Retirement Village has a mini golf course/bowling green area that has been only used for a few hours occasionally. That was until a couple of residents had a brighter idea. Last week Oaktree hosted a golf morning for residents, all to promote their golf course/bowling green within the village. Using recycled products (cups, golf balls, pipe from construction and donated golf putters) they had over 20 residents join in on the morning putt, something that had the Village Manager, Trish Balcombe very excited about, “We are now making this a regular Thursday morning thing. The green was previously only used a few hours a week, and residents Norm Cansdale and Jeff Fallon had the idea to utilize it more.” “We want to promote a healthy lifestyle, social interaction, residents don’t have to be skilled to do this, it’s just having an excuse to get together and have some fun, although... we are playing for high stakes, the prize is a mars bar and a weeks’ worth of free coffee.” “That’s why we couldn’t get Tiger Woods or Greg Norman,” Norm added, “The stakes were too high.” Jeff Fallon said, “It’s a versatile space as you can play by yourself or with your mates.” The boys from North Orange Pharmacy also came to offer their services, taking prescriptions etc, as well as getting involved in a quick game. It was a fun morning out for everyone involved, well done Oak Tree!

ADDITIONAL $530,179 SECURED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CRISIS REFUGE I recently announced more federal funding for this important local project. The $530,179 grant builds on $588,800 for the crisis centre delivered in a previous round of the Building Better Regions Fund in 2017. This brings the total amount to $1,118,000 that we have been able to secure for this much needed community asset. I said in my maiden speech to the Australian Parliament that this was a key issue I wanted addressed, and I am delighted we were able to deliver this funding for a domestic violence refuge. This refuge is going to make a real difference in the lives of people in our local community when they are at their most vulnerable and in need.

A re-elected Coalition Government will invest $10 million towards delivering the new Orange Conservatorium and Planetarium Development Project. Having a strong and vibrant cultural scene is an important part of building country communities. In fact, more and more people are choosing to live in our region because of the culture and arts on offer. Taking the Orange Regional Conservatorium to the next level, and combining it with the Planetarium will create something truly unique.

You can’t underestimate the significance of a project like this. It will encourage interest and participation in both the arts and science and benefit generations to come from Orange, and across the Central West. The investment will see a 250-seat auditorium, teaching spaces, music studios, 70-seat planetarium including an 11 metre dome for virtual simulations of astronomy and complete the civic square. Well done to the team at Orange City Council and the Conservatorium and Planetarium who have worked hard to secure this commitment.

NASHDALE LIDSTER PUBLIC HALL RECEIVES $10,000 The Nashdale Lidster Public Hall is being extended and revitalised with a new concrete slab down and a new patio and landscaping to come. Nashdale Public School P & C were successful in receiving a $10,000 Stronger Communities Grant to help with the project. The works will not only expand the outdoor area but make it easier to access the pizza oven! The hall was built in 1925 and is vital to many community groups. It’s great the extension is underway so it can continue to be used as a focal point of the local community for many years to come.

From Team Orange It’s been a few weeks since I last reported on what’s been happening with Put Orange First. There’s a reason for that, we’ve been thinking of how best to utilise the people power of Orange to get the attention of our civic leaders about some of the issues we, the people, think are important. With that being the case, we recognise that our views are not necessarily the views of the majority and that there are ways that we can harness the collective voice of our residents to help guide the issues we try to get results on. A little bit of background… Team Orange was formed with a view to finding small ways to improve the mood around Orange. I think we can all agree that Orange is one the best places you could find to live. It’s a wonderful place that offers so many opportunities and a lifestyle that is envied. In saying that, our belief from the people

How long has your fashion boutique been in business, Libby? I bought Miss Mary Mac two years ago this month, but the former owner had the shop for about five years. Belinda worked for her and she stayed on with me after the sale, which is fantastic, because we form a nice team together. So, I understand there have been some big changes for you this year? Yes, my husband and I bought the old Bridal shop building in Summer Street in November and after a two-month fit out we started trading on the 29th of April. We have a bigger, more beautiful store and we are really proud of it, so come and have a look!

What prompted the move? We won’t be paying rent! And I think the way Orange is going, this end of Summer Street is becoming the boutique end of town: we’ve got the Sonic, the new boutique Cint and Hawke’s General Store, Mary and Tex… We also get a lot of foot traffic from the nearby hotels. Tell us a little of what you have to offer at Miss Mary Mac? We keep everything from everyday wear right through to evening and occasion wear. Where we can, we buy Australian and New Zealand pieces, but we also have some beautiful European labels. As a centre that is attracting more and more young families, there are more and more reasons to make Orange a great place to move to and raise a family. We feel there a few contributing factors to the mood in Orange… - Electrolux closing - Myer closing - Talk of Big W closing - A tired main street - Too many empty shops and lease costs that are too high - A council that often seems to not be on the same wavelength as their constituents Now, to be fair, there are many wonderful things happening around town, but our perception is our reality. And the moment we ‘feel’ a certain way, it can be hard to change those feelings. We in no way want to talk Orange down… we just

want to brighten the mood wherever we can. With that in mind, below are some of the things we believe can make a measurable difference and be quickly delivered to bring more smiles to faces around town: • Working to bring local business and community in alignment because when they are unison our city will thrive (this is our ‘Put Orange First’ Community Project) • Getting toilets built in Robertson Park • Having colourful flags hanging on the Summer Street flag poles all year round, with the flags highlighting the great aspects of Orange life (not only when events are being promoted). • Generating a buzz in the CBD via regular ‘market-day’ style events (you may have noticed our recent ‘Pot Luck Saturday’ initiative). • Getting Put Orange First branding on certain vehicles that are highly visible around the city. • A community pizza oven to be built for the enjoyment of all (more on that idea later)

If we can see our customers walking away with a smile, we know we’ve done a good job and it makes us feel good.

This was a response to my Page 5 comment in our April 25th issue. In that comment, I suggested we needed a Community Project to bring us together and get us a bit more excited. I have actually had a couple of responses to that Comment and I’ve also been able to help someone else who’s trying to do something good within the community as well. For now, let’s stick to the toilets in Robertson Park issue. At our Put Orange First “Team Orange” meeting last week we decided to put this out to the community to see what others thought. Our understanding is that Council has received a grant to build the toilets. Team Orange believes Council needs to build them NOW to benefit the community and to put this embarrassing issue behind us. If they can’t get the job done, let’s make it a Community Project and apply a good measure of people power to get the job done. No pun intended.

orothy Brown has been volunteering with the ‘Blue Ladies and Men’ for an amazing 25 years this May. Her efforts began in the old Orange Base Hospital and she is now the longest serving member in the group. “I moved back to Orange from Sydney and I thought to myself I have to do something. I saw an ad for the Blue Ladies in the paper and I came along with a friend (we were friends for many, many years) and that’s how it all began, we both started on the same day,” Dorothy explained. The Blue Ladies and Men help patients and nurses by arranging flowers, washing clothes, shopping for patient needs, posting any letters that need to be posted and creating cannulation packages- basically the team are there to make life easier for both

patients and nurses. They work in many different areas of the health service including; Intensive Care, Coronary Care, Dialysis and Respite Care. “Back then we did a lot of what we do today, although we had to take patients' washing home to our own homes and wash them, now we have washing machines and dryers on site. We have more to do here than we did at the old hospital…more responsibility which is great, we have a swipe that will get us into certain areas which we didn’t have before. We used to wear a smock at the old hospital and now we have aprons which are much more comfortable.” When I asked Dorothy why she volunteers her answer was simple, “I enjoy it…I enjoy coming here, meeting people and helping people, and look at my

friends *points to volunteers* how could you resist. Over 25 years, I’ve made some nice friends. Just recently I could not find my car keys, I said to the girls 'I’ve lost them,' I looked in my bag three times, emptied everything out and they weren’t there. When Jenny went out there my keys were still in the door of the car, so we had to call off the search, they look after me out here and at my age, it’s nice to have someone looking after you,” Dorothy laughed. The Jedi Dog Just because you’re not here, doesn’t mean you can’t live forever … I’m sitting at the computer typing this column and it’s the 4th of May. Many of you know the significance of that date – May 4th. If I have to spell it out, that’s the day all the Star Wars fiends say “May the Fourth Be With You”, and we can all feel The Force pulsating across the universe as we go about our daily grind knowing that Obi Wan is watching over us. It was way back in 1997 when I first learned that there was something a little bit bigger out there than just this world we live in. If you’re a believer, then it’s not beyond you to subscribe to the theory that everyone who has gone before you might just be up there (or wherever) sneaking a bit of a look at everything you are up to. They might even be having a hand in that thing we call karma, as fate gives us a bit of direction. There (appears to be) a whole lot of random trivia facts floating around in my brain. I appear to know a ridiculously large number of stupid pieces of info about music, television and the movies from the 70s and 80s. It’s not like I actually studied or researched this stuff, so it’s quite puzzling that it’s all in there. I’m giving much of the credit in my trivia night successes to my own ‘Obi Wan’ up there in the ether - my dad, giving me hints and tips whenever I need to ‘guess the song’ or remember ‘who starred in that movie?’. I remember how hard I worked all those years ago at Uni to master the concepts of Multivariable Calculus and Optimal Control Theory, only to find that no matter

how hard I tried and how many worked examples I struggled through, I was destined to be an eternal young padawan rather than a Jedi master when it came to dominating my chosen field. Why did ‘god’ give me the skill to know every word to ‘Rock Lobster’ (not to mention the names of the band members, and all the tracks on the album) but struggle with the things that would end up being my chosen field? The Force, I tell you, it’s The Force. Now - I’ve got an extra wingman looking over me, just like Obi Wan and Yoda are looking over Luke. Our dear ol’ doggo, who’s been with us for 13 ½ years (that’s about 95 years in human terms), went to sleep forever in her favourite beanbag over Easter and she’s now up there with my old man, Obi Wan, Han and Yoda. That doggo has been around my feet, listening & watching everything I’ve done for a decade. She might appear to be resting eternally (think “Meet The Fockers”) on our mantelpiece, but I’m assuming/hoping that I’ll get the benefit of everything she’s been exposed to over that time hanging around us. That poor ol’ doggo had to listen to every song I blasted on the stereo, every piece of sport I watched on the tele, every stupid discussion I had about Turvey Mortimer being better than Sterlo, every argument about pork reigning over beef. It makes total sense that her encyclopaedic brain won’t go to waste, but will be to my benefit at every trivia night. I’m assuming I’ll get a mental tap on the shoulder from her every time I’m struggling to win a dispute or a disagreement. With my old man and doggo as ethereal wingmen, plus a belief in The Force, surely I’ll be invincible when it comes to trivia knowledge and winning intelligent discussions. Lookout world. May the Force be with you all.

Christianity – About Relationship not Religion I think it is fair to say that most people would think of Christianity as a religion. And ‘religions’ are about: being good, rituals, buildings and organisations. I understand why people think of Christianity primarily as a religion because Christians do seek to be good people, and there are rituals, buildings and organisation. However, it is a shame that people think of Christianity like that,

because at its core Christianity is actually about relationship. God is not a thing or a power. He is a person. He acts, speaks and feels. The Bible speaks of him as a father and his people as his children. While sin is about turning our back on God as our Father, not primarily about doing the wrong thing. The death of Jesus was all about bringing us back into right relationship with Him as our Father, not just an example of a noble thing to do. Think about your relationship with God. Would you say it is a good one? How well do you know him? Listen to Him? Speak to Him? Have you been brought back into a rich relationship with God? Because he has done all He can to make that a reality.

A GOOD YARN! Editor: Reader Jenny Roberts dropped some “old stuff” into our office recently and among it, I found this short story. It’s from Horses and Horsemen back in 1965. I enjoyed reading it, I think you might too. Thanks Jenny!

The Colonel

and The Barmaid The boys in the back parlour of the Australian Hotel, Wagga, outback New South Wales, were whooping it up one day in July 1868, when some character asked how many miles a racehorse could go flat out. Somewhere out of the argument that followed emerged the thought that Wagga ought to stage a 10-mile horse race. One Mr Rawsden Green, a squatter got so enthusiastic about the idea that he ran round with his hat gathering up a prize. He collected 300 golden sovereigns. After that there was no turning back. In quick time, a date was set for the raceNovember 20, 1868, the third day of the Wagga annual race meeting. All Australia got excited at the prospect of the unusual race and 12 known stayers were entered. The most favoured runner was Riverina, a mare, which had run third in the 1867 Melbourne Cup. But there was plenty of other champions in the field. Australia, for instance, was a splendid stayer. On the first two days of the Wagga meeting he won much favour by taking third place on the first day in the Town Plate (two miles) and winning, on the second day, the Squatter’s Purse (two miles). He saddles up as fresh as he could be to face the barrier in the 10-miler on the third day. The race was to be 7 ½ times round the Wagga racetrack.

A lightweight, Glaucus, ran away at the start and build up a lead of a quarter of a mile. At the fifth lap he came back to the field and handed over the running to his stablemate Jerry Sneak who had been specially set by his connections to take out the 300 sovereigns. But Jerry Sneak didn’t have the stamina. Three horses tore into the straight almost together- Comet, Riverina and Australia. The jockeys laid in desperately with whip and spur and the horses responded as though finishing a two-miler. Australia got in front at the post with Comet second and the Melbourne Cup horse, Riverina, third. The time for the race was quite amazing- 23 minutes 35 seconds. This meant that the winning horse had averaged over 25 miles an hour for 10 miles. Well, despite interesting a lot of sportsmen, the race had proved that horses could race at high speed for 10 miles. It was also later concluded that such a race ruined a horse for ever. The winner, Australia, had had enough of racing for life. For ever after he refused to leave the barrier. Riverina, the star mare, was never capable of racing in quality company again. Triolus, who ran fifth, was so distressed after the race that a joint was cut from his tail as an emergency bleeding measure. That finished his racing career. The race was much discussed throughout Australia, and particularly in the

backblocks of New South Wales where it became vogue for men to boast that they had known horses so tough that they could race 50, 75, or even 100 miles. No one even bothered to challenge such obvious nonsense. It was just idle bar chatter. Or it was until Big Ted Tarrant of Dubbo ran into Bob Frost of Orange. Tarrant had a mare named Barmaid which he insisted could race any other horse in the world over any distance no matter how long. And Frost had a big chestnut gelding named Colonel which he insisted could race, etc. Both men were wealthy, and both were proud. And when they got to arguing about the stamina of their animals the atmosphere got red hot. Challenge and counter challenge rent the air. Match you for £100? Make it £1,000. Race you 50 miles? Make it 100 miles. Those boys were not messing about. To make the match a real test of stamina it was agreed that the start should be at the Dubbo Post Office and finish at the Orange Post Office, 96 miles away. Race to start at 6:30am on July 15, 1870. There was to be no set route. Riders could proceed by any cut, high road, through the bush, anyhow they liked. Each horse to carry a minimum of 9 stone.

Everyone in Dubbo was at the post office to see the race start. The big chestnut, Colonel, looked by far the better proposition. He appeared so big, shiny, and fit beside the Barmaid, who was a washed-out brown and appeared to be suffering from a hangover. Still, those who knew the mare were aware that she was packed full of quality. Big Ted Tarrant, the owner, was ripe with confidence. He was ready to add another £1,000 to his bet if anyone wanted to take it. Accompanied by a great cheer from the crowd, the horses went away fast together and, although the roads were muddy, kept up a fast clip for the first 20 miles. For 3 hours 40 minutes they stayed neck ‘a’ neck until they reached the Wellington Punt together. There they were given 15 minutes to spell plus a glass of port each. The owners, Ted Tarrant (Barmaid) and Bob Frost (Colonel) were present. They had arranged for relays of fresh horses to be planted along the length

of the course so that they could follow every inch of the race personally. A couple more hours brought the racers to Ironbark where they had a further 15 minutes breather. Neither animal appeared to be gaining any advantage and approximately half the race was over. Groups of riders were waiting here and there along the road. They could accompany the competitors until their horse began to blow and then drop off. Gallopers, working in relays, carried progress reports to Orange where betting was adjusted accordingly. At the half-way mark the odds were at evens. On the next leg, between Ironbark and Shepherd’s Creek, the first interesting development took place. The Colonel moved out a length ahead of the barmaid, then two lengths, three. The mare made an effort and closed the gap, but soon after gradually fell back again. This was repeated a number of times until Barmaid’s jockey decided to let her make her own pace. He considered that the Colonel would burn himself out at the speed he was maintaining. The Colonel reached Shepherd’s Creek running strongly. He halted, got his breath, and was enjoying a pick of grass when Barmaid came up. Refreshed, the Colonel shot off again, and the mare, without resting went after him. The effort proved too much. Some 30 miles short of Orange, with the Colonel nowhere in sight, the Barmaid gave in. She was walked to Calculla, where she was bedded down for the rest of the afternoon and night. With 12 miles to go to Colonel’s jockey decided his mount was still so fit that he kicked him along a bit. Those 12 miles, the last of the 96-mile run, we covered in one hour 12 minutes. A nice 10 m.p.h. The entire 96 miles were completed in 10 hours 29 minutes, the Colonel passing the Orange Post Office at 4.59pm. This represented an overall average speed of 9 m.p.h. Considering the race had been run over muddy roads, over hill and dale, with river crossings causing delay, the performance had been a mighty one. The Colonel seemed in no way distressed. On the following morning, when the Barmaid was brought quietly into Orange, she still looked a badly battered creature. Orange folk celebrated through most of the night after ‘’ the greatest race in history,’’ and when they finally crawled from their beds late on the following morning they were greeted with a sensation. Big Ted Tarrant (Barmaid’s owner) had entered a protest! The jockeys had weighted in three days before the race and claimed (Barmaid 9 st. 6 lb, Colonel 9 st. 4 lb.) This weigh-in should have taken place on the morning of the race, he argued. For all anyone knew, the Colonel’s jockey might have shed a stone or two in the three days before the race. It wasn’t that he minded losing £1,000, he insisted, it was just the principle of the thing, etc. The big country town of Orange fairly rocked with a mixture of amusement and anger. ‘’Pay up and shut up’’ shouted everyone, including the official judge, Mr. Avery. A leading citizen of Orange. So big Ted Tarrant paid up with such a grace as he could muster, and led his defeated Barmaid slowly back to Dubbo.

Landers Music hosted the latest performance workshop for the students in Gabes School of Rock on Friday May 26th. Each student took their turn in performing in front of others student, supporters and landers staff and clients. It was a great opportunity for the students to practice their performance skills and show case what they have been learning. This type of performance is a regular event for the students of the School of Rock. All the performers clearly enjoyed the opportunity.

May I disagree with you in your life comment on page 5 of the 11-17, 2019 issue of the Life Magazine? I for one do not want more people in Orange. I moved from Sydney to Orange to escape the hordes of people, the traffic congestion, the noise, the pollution, the frenetic pace of life, in other words ‘’ The Rat Race’’. I was pleasantly surprised by the laid back way of life and friendliness of the people in Orange. Your comment to bring crowds of people here every week struck shivers of fear down my spine. God help us! No No! Please don’t bring more people here, we have enough. A lot of people I have spoken to prefer the way it is, like me.

Since 1981; 71 Adelaide Street has housed the St James Catholic Church, but an asbestos roof could now spell the end for this historic building.

BY DAVID DIXON It was Blayney’s first Council Chambers in the 1880s and has been variously and reputedly a picture theatre, veterinary practice, carpet shop, pub, and Catholic Church; but now its days appear to be numbered. Since 1981 the building at 71 Adelaide Street has housed the St James Catholic Church, but a recent accident revealed an ugly truth; the roof of the historic building is totally comprised of asbestos. The collapse of part of the old Blayney Theatre ceiling during a recent Mass was more than just a rude shock for surprised parishioners; it has now led to all Catholic services being transferred to the St Joseph’s School Hall. “We moved there in 1981 from the old church because we couldn’t fit all the congregation in; the old church was too small,” Parish Administrator Father Paul Devitt said of the Adelaide Street site. “Also, there was a thought that we should be in the main street where all the other churches were,” he added. “But then a few weeks ago now; part of the ceiling of the old picture theatre fell through the false ceiling of the church which is of particle board. “In order to fix the ceiling; the builder used a cherry picker with the idea of taking part of the roof of; but found out it was all ‘super six’ corrugated asbestos,”, Fr Devitt added. No-one is quite sure when the asbestos was installed but a fire and a major rebuild of the thenmovie house in the 1930s may lend a clue. “It’s been our church for a number of years, but there’s never really been a lot of affection for the building… we’re now holding our services in the old school hall at St Joseph’s that can be accessed via Hill Street and we’ll probably remain up there,” Fr Devitt concluded.
