We are SO Thankful! ANZAC Day, a day that saw us stop, reflect and appreciate the great sacrifices made by so many to ensure we have the freedom and lifestyle we have today. Boy I’m pleased the public holidays are behind us, for the time being at least. It’s been quite hard keeping up with everything and remembering which day it is over the last couple of weeks, especially for this old fella. I also don’t think I’ll resume normal transmission until the Federal election is behind me too.

It’s another great OC Life we have for you this week, there’s some great stories in here, great pictures and more for you to enjoy. I also need to tell you about a change we’ve made form this week. With television viewing habits and options becoming more diverse as each day goes by, we’ve decided to scale back our TV Guide and use the space we save for other stories, photos etc. We will still bring you the programs on the 15 main TV channels each week but in a more compact form. We’re also giving those of you who love to enter our competitions a new opportunity to win. Even if you’re not into competitions but do like to share good news, this one may still interest you as well. You can read more about this in my comment on Page 5.

We can’t escape the Federal Election and although OC Life doesn’t give a lot of coverage to most election issues, there’s two people standing for the Senate, who for different reasons, will be of interest to many readers. One is local Brett Cooke who is standing for the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party, the other is Silvana Nile, wife of State Senator Rev. Fred Nile, she’s standing for the Christian Democrats Party. Many locals will be interested in the prospects of both these candidates, so we have some information about both in this issue.

orn and raised in Orange, 23-year-old Eleni Cassimatis is leaving her mark in the acting world one-character at a time. Eleni moved to Sydney in 2015 and has been studying and pursing her career as an actress ever since. “As a kid I loved performing, I was nicknamed the ‘drama queen’ by my family, I’d make my sister and even our neighbours put on shows with me in the living room or the street, wherever! I remember always telling Mum and Dad I was going to go to drama school when I got older, and hated them for not letting me drop out of school to go to perform full time, which in hindsight I am now so grateful they put their foot down to that,” Eleni laughed. “I initially fell in love with the fun that I had while performing and the getting to play different characters, but as I fell deeper into the world of learning and understanding what acting is, and can be, I began to fall in love with the discovery side of things - working out why a character does what they do or says what they say, what circumstances have brought them to this very moment etc. and then getting to play all of that and work with wonderful actors who have also brought new incredible characters to life - it excites me so much! The idea of getting to share wonderful stories, old and new, and hopefully inspiring that love of great stories in others.” After graduation and spending time overseas on a gap year, Eleni knew she had a decision to make, “I either go to Uni, study something ‘stable’, or give 1000% commitment to pursuing a career in acting. It didn’t take much thought because I knew that if I didn’t give it my best shot, I’d always wonder what if?.. so, I packed up and moved to Sydney, I am so grateful for every little moment that has led me to where I am today.” “The first person who really believed in me and made me

think that I could actually give it a crack, was a wonderful acting teacher I had here in Orange named Robert Dunn - to him I will always be so grateful. He also directed the first show I was part of in the Orange theatre scene - ‘Showtrain’ - and to anyone who was part of that or saw it, you will know how much of a specular production that was!” “My mum has also been a big support system for me, I would not have had the courage or confidence in myself to do any of this without the constant overflowing support I receive from her. She inspires me constantly with her work ethic, and reminds me that not everything in life is easy and not everything is fair, but if I work hard anything is possible, it’s pretty special having that

support behind me.” “My career highlight was last year, producing and acting in a show called ‘Pool (No Water)’. I was so proud of what we achieved, and I was so fortunate to have two incredible directors- Maeliosa Stafford and Caroline Mooney (who were powerhouses, and absolute wonders for trusting me) say they were on board with it and guide me all the way. Pulling that off was pretty special.” Eleni is now touring Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong performing shows with a company called ‘Poetry in Action’. “This tour is pretty special, the shows are performed in schools and are all based around poetry, heightened language, speeches and words that have changed our world. Seeing the conversations they’re starting for students today who are the future of our country is remarkable, and something I’m so delighted to be a part of.” “We get all sorts of messages after shows from audience members thanking us, asking us about performing, sending us their creative writing pieces, telling us they were too afraid to start drama until now, even though they’ve always wanted to, or that they always thought poetry was boring until now, so it’s pretty insane.” Eleni’s passion for her hometown has never swayed, “I’m often home visiting friends and my family, I also teach in my spare time (yes what free time!?) and I have been lucky enough to do that in Orange, it’s something that I feel very passionate about.” What does the future have in store for Eleni you ask? “I’d love to study my Masters in Classical Text in London. My other goal is to get signed in the U.S and start getting work in the film and TV world.” Stay tuned, I’ve got full confidence we could be seeing the wonderful Eleni on our screens very soon!

“I’m in the production for ‘Rent’ which will be performed in May, I’m playing Mrs Cohen and some other small parts, it’s a great cast. I was also in The Little Mermaid last year which was my first show. I love meeting new people and having the experience on stage, it’s lots of fun. It’s been a long time since I was on the stage, though in my younger days I was a semi-professional Country and Western singer. I was singing in bands up until I started having kids, I went back for a little while and it was hard, because family comes first. I sang with Smoky Dawson in Newcastle, my three-year-old got up and sang with him too and I remember I always had this nervous

twitch with my leg and my knee would wiggle, I would come off stage and ask my Mum, “Did you see it, did you see my knee!?” She would say, “No, I was looking but I couldn’t see it!” *laughs* so, that was bit of a running joke in the family - let’s see if we can see Jo’s knee wiggling. I started bringing music into my work (Aged Care), I’ve been working for Allity for 10 years now and I love what I do. At different stages throughout my career I’ve used my guitar and sung with our residents, that has been really nice. Bowie has been a big part of it too, he is actually going to be in the show as well, we are a bit of a team, him and I, we don’t do too much without each other.”

If you need a little more clarity, let me give you one of mine as an example Some years back my wife and I decided to try Redwin Sorbelene Body Wash as an alternative to soap. We loved it immediately and still shower using it. It comes in a 1 ltr container with a pump action. We get it at Chemist Warehouse where it sells for about $10.50 per litre. It can be $3 - $4 dearer elsewhere. We haven’t compared the cost to soap, but it lasts quite some time and it’s great and easy to use.

MOVING INTO RESIDENTIAL CARE

Part 2

K n o w & U n d e r s t a n d Yo u r R i g h t s The decision to move into residential care can be emotional and stressful. It usually occurs after diagnosis of an illness, after an accident or due to disability. There are many different types and levels of residential care available from independent living units, respite, home care to residential aged care. It is a time to be aware of the financial and legal implications of your decisions. Here are some of the questions we are frequently asked: Residential Care Contract/ Agreement or Retirement Village contract - should I consult my lawyer before I sign it? Yes, the contract/ agreement is like any other contract. It is a legal agreement which sets out the terms and conditions of the care facility as well as your rights and responsibilities. It is important that you understand the legal implications before signing an Aged Care accommodation contract or Retirement Village contract.

of legal title and occupancy for the property; whether you own or lease the unit, ongoing service charges and maintenance is vital. When the unit is sold in the future, it is important to know what fees and charges will apply. Issues to discuss with your solicitor with the Aged Care Accommodation contract may include discussion of the financial structure of payments (upfront, daily or mixture); how any refund of accommodation bond is made to your estate after you die (whether a Grant of Probate is required); knowing your rights and understanding the levels of care to be provided to you including whether you can be moved around within the facility without prior consent by you. As it is a major change in life circumstances, it is a good time to check and update your testamentary affairs including your Power of Attorney and Appointment of Enduring Guardian.

After my death, does my estate get any money back?

It depends on the contract you enter. Obtain proper legal advice before signing the contract, so you know what your estate will receive after you die. If a lump sum has been paid, the care provider must refund the lump sum balance less allowable amounts which have been deducted over the period in which you have been in care.

As we do each year, we caught moments from the Anzac Day parade down Summer Street last week. It seems the crowd gets bigger every year and OC Life was quite inspired by the number of young faces that appeared in the march, to pay their respects. Bravo Orange! A familiar face in our region’s music scene, Robbie Mortimer is a passionate musician who has been writing some of his own original music, with his debut album set to be released in the coming months. “I’m generally a pretty happy bloke, so a lot of the music I write it is upbeat and ‘feel good’. I have some songs about heartbreak and some songs about love, travel and life. I have some amazing inspiration to write meaningful songs, this comes from my partner and the experiences we have shared together through love, life and travel.” “I remember being in the studio at 1:15am after a long studio session and singing the last harmony line to my song ‘Hollywood’ which was the last song we did for the album. Once the music had stopped, I came to the realisation that I had just finished my debut album, this was a childhood dream of mine. I am usually pretty hard on myself, but I remember feeling extremely proud. I had lots of musical knock-backs through school and to be able to write my very own songs and record them as well as have people generally take an interest in my work is extremely rewarding. I am very proud of my music; it tells a story and allows me to connect with people.” Robbie explains his biggest career highlight was opening for the Temptations and The Beach Boys on their Australian Surf and Soul tour two years ago. “I played in front of a huge crowd and was able to showcase my original music. It was such a special moment and I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given, watching familiar faces singing and dancing to songs I had written, that was very surreal for me and then after the show, I was also able to spend some time with Mike Love from the Beach Boys. We shared some stories and he gave

me some excellent life advice. I’ll forever cherish that moment.” “As well as music, I am currently a part-time school teacher and I love every moment of it. I’m lucky I have a job where I am able to bring my passion into the classroom. Music helps me connect with students and encourage them to express themselves in different ways.” Recalling a memory from past gigs, Robbie laughed, “Myself and my Band ‘Young and Wild’ were asked to play at a music festival and we went back stage straight away to practise our set, we were very nervous. Not taking much notice, we were introduced, we walked on stage and we were greeted by an HUUUGE crowd of two.. an elderly couple who were sitting on deck chairs. We burst into laughter and began our set. ... IT COULD BE Musicwise, it was probably one of the best gigs we had A LITTLE done. Well, we got a wild round of applause FAR-FETCHED from the elderly couple anyway. After this, we sat down and had a beer with them and thanked them BUT IT’S for their support. TECHNOLOGY EXPO – FREE THIS YEAR! By JONATHAN ROE

THE PACE OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE TRULY HAS REVOLUTIONISED THE WAY WE LIVE — JUST THINK SMART PHONES HAVE ONLY BEEN WITH US FOR 12 YEARS!

o you wonder what the next big thing in tech will be? Or how living in our regional city will change over the coming decades? Want to know how to avoid being scammed online? Or how to make your home a SMART home? At the NSW Regional Technology Expo this 14th – 16th May, you will be able to learn the answers to these questions and more. Following the success of last year’s Expo, Orange Daybreak Rotary have prepared a three-day program of presentations featuring national and international speakers. “We’re taking a new approach to it this year. It is a new format and it is all completely free,” said Expo Co-chair Graeme Fleming. “We will be at the one venue — the Orange Function Centre — and I think we’ve got some really interesting programs lined up. People can expect to be really engaged and learn a

bit more about what’s happening with technology.” As well as full program of information sessions, Orange City Council is hosting two public lectures at the Greenhouse of Orange. “We’ve got two international speakers that will feature as well: Futurist Ian Jansen will be talking about the future and what we can expect; and Stuart Coggins from Oracle Australia, he’ll be talking about smart cities and looking at Orange in the future — we’ll be talking about driverless cars, interconnectivity with our cars and just where we are going to go as a city,” Mr Fleming said. A model of the ‘Smart City of the future’ will also be on display at the function centre over the Expo. “People should come along and see that. It will be quite innovative as well and show where we will be going in the future,” Mr Fleming said. Other sessions will look at Technology for people with disabilities and the ageing, the very latest

technology at Orange City Library, Tech-Start Ups, Living better with Technology and the myriad of opportunities available at TAFE with Health, Careers, Programs and Services. The Expo will also have a heavy focus on education

IT IS A NEW FORMAT AND IT IS ALL COMPLETELY FREE with 240 of the best and brightest high school students from Orange, Molong and Blayney given the opportunity to participate in an intensive STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) program. “We have a major focus on education this year for both school students and the general public,” said

Mr Fleming. “So, we have the two-day really intensive program on for Year 7 to 12 students and the rest of the programs are aimed at the broader community. It doesn’t matter whether you are a mum at home, a senior citizen or whatever, we want to show you how you can connect with technology and perhaps open that door a little bit and let you take that first step. Based on the comments of these people, along with those of radio shock jock Ray Hadley and well-known journalist Miranda Devine, Fred was highly regarded and respected for the way he balanced standing up for what he believed in, yet didn’t use the considerable power he had, often having the balance of power, to hinder the government of the day from governing. His skill as a legislator was highly regarded and he is given considerable credit for helping make what was often considered good legislation even better. It was also acknowledged that Fred was always fair game for the media, over time he became his own “brand” and as such, the media often had a field day with issues that he raised or took a particular interest in. The media thrives on controversy and Fred was frequently involved in controversy, particularly anything to do with moral issues. Love him or loathe him, as the film’s title so aptly puts it, Fred Nile has improved the life of millions of Australians in ways that many may not even realise, and he intends to continue to do that for as long as his ageing body and mind will allow. Interestingly in the film, Pru Goward made the comment “they only hate you if you’re effective”. Fred will soon be 85, currently still has four years to serve, and despite all he has already suffered and achieved, he shows no signs of stopping yet. In the meantime, his wife Silvana has positioned

herself to carry on the Nile tradition and is seeking to win a seat in the Federal Senate. Silvana is considerably younger than Fred, but clearly has the same passion and heart as her famous husband and is ready for the challenge. One of the themes she’s pushing in her campaign is “Give us back our Country!” Her campaign policies include: Zero tolerance for domestic violence, Zero tolerance for child pornography, Remove all “Safe School” transgender (Fluid Gender) programs from all Australia Schools, Defend our Constitutional Monarchy, One law for all Australians – No Sharia Law – No Sharia Courts, Freedom of speech, Freedom of religion, ProLife – no abortion, no euthanasia, Support traditional marriage, Environment: Yes to Coal Fired Power Stations and NO to fracking of Cola Seam Gas/ Yes to nuclear power, Affordable housing, Increase pension payments to meet cost of living, Increase nurses in public hospitals, Increase intake of Christian refugees, Climate change action, Increase Police numbers and salaries, Increase drought relief for farmers. “Things seem to be going okay”

hese are the most dangerous words I hear people say when it comes to their financial future. When it comes to things like superannuation and investments, the most important question you need to consider when evaluating them is, “compared to what?”. Feeling like things are going okay is no substitute for being able to say they are actually going okay. I’m staggered by how much some people are getting slugged when it comes to both advice and super and investment products, but unfortunately, they don’t realise the true cost until it is clearly pointed out to them.

Here are a few examples of people I’ve been helping over the last few weeks: - A lady who is paying close to 15 times more in superannuation fees than she needs to, 2.96% per year when we can get that reduced to around 0.2%. - A couple who we can reduce the fees on their retirement savings by 80% by using the best options within a profit-FORMEMBERS fund. - A young lady who came to see me recently who had been charged what appeared to be a really low fee of $301 for a financial plan. She felt something wasn’t quite right and she was spot on… even though it had been printed on paper in the fine print, the adviser had not

made any real effort to tell her about the $3,000 in commission they were going to receive on the insurance they were recommending. That commission locks in a 30% higher premium on the insurance for the customer, in order to ultimately pay for the adviser’s commission. - A couple in their late 30s who, with a change to a better super fund and better investment strategy, will be on track to have around an extra $900,000 when it comes time to retire. - A couple paying $7,000 a year for advice, but effectively getting no advice! - A couple who were quoted $4,500 in advice fees from a company who only recommends their own products.

- The list goes on… Could your financial future benefit from a check-up? Mal MacDonald says it was his mother who got him into the world of movies.

rowing up in Double Bay in the 50s and 60s, he said his mother would drag him and his father to the cinema during that ‘Golden Age of the Silver Screen’ and it left a lasting impression. “My mother was an avid movie buff, so I always had a passion for films,” said Mal. “She’d drag me along to see all these movies and I just got wrapped up in it.” Mal began his working career in the paint department at Grace Brother’s department store, but it didn’t take long before the film world called to him. “In the 70s, I worked at a VHS company and that got me even more interested in the movie side and I worked for a film company where I learnt the trade — I was a film checker, repairer. I was there for about two years with them and then I left and opened my own business in February ‘74 and the rest as they say is history.” Mal has run his business — now called Reel

I don’t like anything shot on digital. It wasn’t really a hard decision to make.” After graduating from the academy, Brett’s early years in the force were spent at Enfield and other stations across Sydney’s Inner West, before specialising in witness security as part of the State Protection Group based out of Surry Hills. During this period, Brett also found time to acquire a commercial helicopter licence. “I think I’m an adventurous kind of person and it is not something I’d always wanted to do, but I happened to be at the site of a helicopter retrieval when I was in my early 20s and I was in awe of the role of a helicopter and what it could do. That spawned an interest and when I’m interested in something — I go full tilt at it,” said Brett, who for a long period split his working week between the police force and flying helicopters. “I was working for a company that had the AGL gas pipeline contract and I flew for them for a number of years. having to deal with the rigors of policing and in all honesty, I wanted to pursue other things… I’ve got an adventurous spirit and I wanted to pursue my love of the outdoors,” he said. So, Brett purchased a hunting and fishing touring company in British Columbia, Canada. “In 2009, I’d been for a trip over to Canada and helped out as a horse wrangler and an assistant guide in British Columbia with another outfit and that sparked my interest in Canada and all things wild,” he said. “When I’m interested in something, I just go at it and so I operated that for a number of years, where I’d host Australians and Kiwis on their wilderness adventures in North America.” Although Brett describes himself as always being a ‘interested voter’, it wasn’t until Phil Donato won the seat of Orange that he found himself in the world of politics. “I’ve known Phil since he first came to Orange and we became good friends. He was after employees to staff his office and I was only too happy to come onboard and help him, said Brett. He said that since entering the political world he has come to believe that people deserve better local representation, which is what has led him to throw his own hat in the ring. “Phil Donato got elected because he’s doing what he’s supposed to do. I mean he is great at what he does, but every elected politician should be working just as hard. It is not hard to do, but sadly, I’m not seeing that universally performed across the state and indeed the country,” said Brett, who doesn’t appear to be daunted by the move into public life. “There really is no difference other than stepping in front of the camera,” said Brett. “At the end of the day, I’m saying the words I had formerly written and suggested. It is basically speaking what I believe in and delivering my own message.”

By MELISE COLEMAN Last week St Barnabas Anglican Church Parish Hall was host to the annual holiday eight game chess tournament. With 50 kids taking part, aged from six to 16 years old. Junior Chess Coordinator, Joe Cummins explained, “We have hosted this tournament in school holidays for the last 15 years. Chess maintains or is even increasing its popularity, even among the tech savvy kids, they love to come and play against another students. We have seen an encouraging number of girls who are getting involved each year too which is great.” The next stage of chess is inter-school chess, it starts soon and a lot of them come here to practice, they will be representing their school.

BOO-ing on ANZAC Day? Gee, some of our alcohol-fuelled behaviour is a bit rich these days. I don’t think I’ve missed an ANZAC service in Orange for a while. Once again the march and the following service proved to be moving and appropriate experiences for all in attendance. I’m all for the ‘Aussie way’ of paying respect to those who deserve it, reverence first, then celebrating with a beer (and in the ANZAC’s case, some two-up) afterward, but the way in which some of us appear to be showing our respect for those who died for us has taken things to a level where it makes taking advantage of the ‘young and free’ thing look like a country of ungrateful yahoos, not those who live in the Lucky Country. I remember it as clear as yesterday, the first time I booed someone on a footy field. A warm winter Sunday arvo in 1979. Sydney Sports Ground (now the soon-to-be remodelled Sydney Football Stadium). My dad was a mad Roosters supporter, and I have one blue eye and one white eye for the Doggies. With my Steve Mortimer #7 halfback jersey on, dad and I caught the train down from Woy Woy, knowing that one of us would have bragging rights on the trip home at 5pm. The old wooden benches at the Sports Ground provided about as much support as the Bulldog army could give George Peponis and the boys … we were flogged by the Tricolours with their mercurial winger, Kerry Boustead, bagging a brace of tries and causing carnage every time he touched the ball. With the game well and truly out of our reach, Kerry hurt his leg and moved to the

sideline. Doing what I thought was the right thing, I joined in the chorus of boo-ing from the other Doggies supporters nearby. My dad was very quick to not only chastise me for doing so, but he gave me a positive lecture on why it wasn’t appropriate to boo someone or to be happy when a player was injured. Lesson learned at age 12 ½. Even when the Doggies, the Wallabies, the Swans, our cricketers, or any other teams that I’m watching live have gone under, (even if I’ve got a few beers under my belt) I’m now forever appreciative of the work of the other team, it can’t always be my blokes who win. Thanks dad. What a shame that booze gets in the way on ANZAC day and takes the real stories off the front page. We’ve had issues of alcohol-fuelled behaviour at pubs, with policemen and staff being abused and assaulted as they do their job on arguably our most important day. I don’t think that’s what our forefathers had in mind when they earned us a privileged lifestyle. It might be time for our magistrates to set a high bar in these areas if we want things to change. And then there was the boo-ing of the Collingwood player, as he accepted his man of the match award. Wow, booze, anonymity and safety in numbers is a bad combination. The match was over, the result on the scoreboard, but the boo-ing went on. A lot was made of both the alcohol rages and the booing in the days following ANZAC day – with some people astonishingly finding ways to defend both of these type of actions. No excuses for either. The head coach of the poor ol’ player who got booed summed it up by saying “Shame on you for booing a champion”. I’m going further and saying “Shame on you for bringing any part of our most important day into disrepute”. I’d like to think we’ll do better next year, but …

It’s just had a new power/electricity upgrade through the Australia Government’s Drought Communities program and delivered through Blayney Shire Council, which has done a fantastic job identifying worthwhile projects such as this one to fund.

• Record school funding of $307.7 billion for State, Catholic and Independent Schools. • Every school in Calare gets a funding boost from the extra $11.6 billion allocated to schools in NSW

One of the highlights of the Central West’s calendar is the Canowindra International Balloon Challenge and of course, the Balloon Glow. The economic boost to the area in a time of drought, is enormous. Balloon pilots from seven countries competed in the Challenge and thousands came to see the Glow. 160 volunteers helped out. Congratulations to Graham and Jan Kerr, all the sponsors, volunteers and supporters, on a huge effort and a job well done!

The Australian Government has committed record funding for our public schools and hospitals.

Over the weekend, I had the privilege of trying a great new sport – Team Penning at the very impressive community-built facility at Lyndhurst.

Helping our farming families and their communities deal with the devastating effects of drought has been a real focus of the government. As part of the government’s immediate and long-term drought response, we have committed nearly $6 billion, growing to $7 billion, in assistance, including additional funding and improvements to existing support. This is now the biggest drought response in Australia’s history.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

Invest $3.9 billion in the future Drought Fund to prepare for future droughts. The fund will grow to $5 billion over the next decade and enable investment of $100 million per year in water infrastructure and drought resilience Continue to ensure the Farm Household Allowance is fit for purpose, making the $5 million farm assets test for Farm Household Allowance permanent. Create a new restocking and replanting concessional loan through the Regional Investment Corporation (RIC)

Establish a $7 million Drought Communities Small Business Support Program. Provide extra support by providing $1 million each to an additional 14 local council areas experiencing severe drought through the Drought Communities Program. It’s vitally important we keep ramping up drought support as conditions worsen. I have made many speeches to the Federal Parliament calling for this to happen and while there is more work to do, this latest announcement is positive and welcome news.

Locally, the indisputable fact is that federal funding for the Western NSW Local Health District has also increased every year from $92.6 million under Labor in 2013 to $198.4 million in 2018 (growing by 114.1%) and will increase to $285.5 million by the end of the new national hospitals agreement in 2024-25. In Calare, the Government has provided record funding to the region’s local health districts. We’ve funded a new medical school and a new medical research facility (a combined investment of $40 million), we’ve just delivered a brand new MRI licence for Lithgow, which is worth millions of dollars each year in subsidised scans, plus a new headspace service for the town.

This week I caught up with the beautiful Ruby Sharp. “I had a good life, it still is, I can’t wish for anything better.” Where and when were you born? Here in Orange in 1922. What are the most important lessons you’ve learned in life? Just to be kind to everybody and to always say thank you to our family, always. What big world events were the most memorable while you were growing up? My brother went to War, when he came back the Army gave him a beautiful funeral. What do you miss about the good-old days? I used to love dancing; the old-time dancing was fun I miss that. My Mother used JUST BEING to take me every Wednesday night and that’s HAPPY where I learnt to dance, I loved the old-time WITH MY waltz. Were you good at school? No, *laughs* FAMILY WAS I always had normal grades, and I got into IMPORTANT trouble in school *laughs* but doesn’t TO ME... everyone. They would make me stand in the corner with my back to them, I can’t count how many times that happened. *laughs* Describe yourself in three words. Easy-going, love life and I love my family. What is your favourite memory? As I said, I was naughty *laughs* but when I met my Husband, I turned good. I would walk behind people and use throwdowns

I worked in the Woollen Mills, we made Khaki material for the soldiers. Then I got married and raised my family, I had three beautiful sons. What are you most proud of? My husband, I’ve lost him, I’ve lost him, and I loved him, I first met him when we were at a dance. My favourite memory with him was the day we were getting married, he took me down town and I got my hair done, then we came back and I said “I’ll see you in church”. What is your favourite thing about being a Grandmother? Just being around them, they are lovely. What life advice would you give to your grandkids? To be happy and to love one another. Who is the person who influenced your life the most? Why? My Husband, he was just lovely. What is your favourite thing to do for fun now? Technical College lampshades Back in the 1950s Orange Technical College offered many arts and crafts courses. They did not necessarily lead to qualifications but they were a chance to meet people and learn new skills that might be useful at home. This photo from May 1956 show a group of women learning how to make lampshades. Other courses offered to women at that time included ceramics, tailoring and typewriting.

Orange schools urged to register for Maths Competition The call is out for primary schools in Orange to register for the 2019 Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition—the longest running annual mathematics competition of its kind in Australia. In August last year, almost 19,000 primary students from more than 310 schools across regional NSW sat the 38th annual Competition, with this year’s shaping up to be even bigger. The Competition was popular in Orange last year, with four schools participating, in which a total of 258 local year five and six students tested their math mettle in the 35-question paper completed without the use of a calculator, ruler, or any other mathematical instrument. Newcastle Permanent’s Branch Manager, Shaun McNiven said he wanted local schools to show the rest what they could do while having fun with maths. “I’m so proud to be a part of the Orange community and I believe that we have many students in our region who really enjoy maths and like to test their problem-solving skills. I’m urging all our local primary schools – private and public – to get on

Dr Gill Hicks is widely considered one of the world's most thought-provoking, powerful and life-affirming speakers. Her vital work, particularly in countering violent extremism, became her focus after she was left severely and permanently injured from the actions of a suicide bomber in the attack on London’s transport network in 2005. Prior to the bombings, Gill was a respected figure within the fields of Architecture and Design in London, from Publisher of Blueprint to Director of Dangerous Minds Design and then Head Curator at the Design Council, Gill was and has continued to be recognized and awarded for her many contributions to the Arts, Health care and Peace Building. A published author, musician, artist and mother, Gill’s appreciation and gratitude for life is prevalent, she is certainly a living testament to determination, courage and resilience. Gill shares what she has learned about herself, humanity and the extraordinary and inherent ability to rise in the wake of adversity. Dr Gill Hicks will be speaking at the Orange Civic Theatre Friday, 3 May, 11am and 7.30pm.

Canowindra’s monthly must-attend free live music gig returns this Sunday with Molong local Daryl Byrne stepping on the Bowlo stage. The Sunday Sessions have fast become an institution at the Canowindra Community Bowls and Recreation Club this month a true character and showman. Daryl Byrne is no stranger in Canowindra and regularly visits as competitor on the bowling greens. But when he is not bowling you will find Daryl playing lead guitar and singing at gigs across the Central West. Daryl has played with and supported amazing acts such as Steve Ford & The Flange, Melinda Schneider and Adam Brand. His brag sheet also includes being a guitarist and singer in the “Patsy Cline” touring band in Brisbane, plus lead guitarist and vocals for the “American pedal steel convention”. Daryl has been the weekend opener (both solo and with a band) at the Trundle ABBA Festival for the past three years and plays all around NSW in various formats and styles. Sunday Sessions at The Bowlo kicks of this Sunday (5 May) 3 6pm at the Canowindra Community Bowls and Recreation Club.
