he Rotary Club of Orange has its next Community Markets during the Orange Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival (Sunday 24). The markets will host stalls with a wide range of local produce, art, craft, food, plants and treats, as well as rides for the kids and entertainment during the day by visiting bush poets and local talent. President, Clivia Frieden, says “Rotary has supported local schools throughout the Banjo Paterson Festival, with creative poetry workshops, performance opportunities and a well-represented Primary School section in the poetry competition. The Rotary profits from these markets go further towards youth programs locally”.

As part of the Banjo Paterson Festival, the market is always a popular event, providing an opportunity for local businesses, artisans, knitters, nurseries and cooks to showcase their wares. The Emmaville Cottage will be open for free inspections and a guided history of the building and the property on which Banjo Paterson was born. “Located on the grass below the cottage, there’s shade under the trees for lunch and plenty of parking at the site,” said Ms Frieden. “Come up to the top of Hill Street near the Botanic Gardens and enjoy the variety of stalls and the Festival atmosphere”. You’ll find all of the happenings at the Botanic Gardens Precinct (at the corner of Hill Street and the Northern Distributor Road), see you there!

an, Tan, Tethera’ is a joint exhibition held at the Corner Store Gallery from Hannah Orrock (Molong) and Maria Shaw (Orange), which explores the symbolism of animals in dreams. Chatting with Hannah, she said, “In this exhibition we look to develop a playful dialog between the observed (the animals captured within the dream) and the observer (audience).” Orrock’s paintings explore the interfaces between notions of the wild and the domestic realms in the collective imagination as well as the relationships between the bush and the city in Australian history and contemporary culture. Animals inhabit much of Orrock’s work and act as wry observers of

human foibles and concerns. Shaw on the other hand uses felting to create whimsical sculptures of cartoon-like sheep. Her over-exaggeration of the unrealistic sheep form highlights to the audience the fictional nature of the relationships people now have with animals, notably farm animals. With the local audience consisting of a farming community where the ‘real’ sheep image is kept alive through personal experience, the work highlights the difference between the farmers knowledge vs the citydwelling consumers idealistic representation. The Gallery will be open every day until Sunday 24th. Weekdays 10am-5pm weekends 10am-4pm (apart from 24th when they will close at 12).

Country Riders PJ’s Jerky dig deep for Prostate Cancer

n Saturday the 23rd, we will see Country Riders Social Motorcycle Club conduct their annual fundraising dice run. Country Riders are a family orientated Social Motorcycle Club with members from throughout the Central West. The ride will start from the ELF Centre at Orange Showground, with registrations from 8am and ‘stands up’ at 10am, the ride is set to attract riders from as far as Sydney in

support of this worthy cause. There will be plenty of rewards for riders who get involved, with the total prize pool approaching $3,000, there are opportunities to win not only overall, though also on one of the four legs of the ride. FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR LOCAL VOLUNTEER, NOT-FOR-PROFIT, AND COMMUNITY GROUPS Local charities, not-for-profits and community groups are being urged to put in an application for $700,000 in funding up for grabs from the IMB Bank Community Foundation. Schools, sporting, charity and volunteer organisations, plus larger bodies including Lions Clubs Australia, Rotary Australia, Vision Australia, Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, Scouts Australia, the SES, St Johns Ambulance, and Royal Life Saving Australia have all benefited from Community Foundation funding over the past 20 years. “We want to hear from people or groups with an idea to support their community, whether they are new projects in need of seed funding, or projects already in operation that are looking to expand,” said IMB Bank CEO Robert Ryan. Past projects have ranged from the establishment of recycling programs and Men’s Sheds, through to public walkways, school gardens, youth driver training, mental health, first aid training and increased security for victims of domestic violence. “We know many incredible groups across our target regions are working hard to improve their communities and the people living in them. Sometimes, all that’s needed to turn a great idea into a tangible benefit is the funding,” said Mr Ryan. “It all starts with an application. So, if someone has a great idea and vision for their community, it’s important to apply for funding now. Together we can make our communities better for everyone.” Community groups are encouraged to go to www.imb. com.au/communityfoundations to apply before February 28.

ANSWERS NEEDED ON RETIREE TAX I’ve been disappointed that there hasn’t been a reason given by Bill Shorten as to why retirees are losing their tax rebates under his proposed policy. 84% of the retirees affected are on a taxable income of less than $37,000. They’ve worked all their lives and done the right thing to save for their retirements. It’s not fair to suddenly change the goal posts for the 6,500 local retirees hit by this. Can they seriously be expected to re-enter the workforce to make up for their lost retirement savings?

REPORT FRONT AND CENTRE AT PARLIAMENT The Stories of The Invisible Children report, informed by a White Paper prepared by Charles Sturt University’s Dr Tamara Cumming, was launched at Parliament House last week.

The hubs have been identified in regions with existing concentrations of plantation forests available for harvest, processing plants, transport routes and a skilled forestry workforce. The work now begins to determine the size and make up of each hub. The assessments that come from each of the hubs will provide industry with regional data that is not currently available, bringing potential to support new investment in the sector. The hubs will also assist with delivering the billion new trees to meet a projected quadrupling of global demand for timber products by 2050.

WOOLWORTHS ENDS ITS $1 MILK There was welcome news for our dairy farmers this week with Woolworths announcing it will cease sales of $1/L milk. It will continue to use its dairy processor to distribute the extra money to each farmer who produced the milk, paying extra for each litre that farmer produced.

The report highlights the challenge regional families and children can face in accessing support services. Over the past 18 months, project partners - Royal Far West and CSU - travelled across regional NSW interviewing families to discover what is working for them, and where the real gaps and opportunities are.

Coles and Aldi continue to sell milk at $1, pushing down prices for farmers. As our farmers battle flooding rains and droughts, we need to be supporting them anyway we can.

One highlight of the report was the positive impact that telehealth is making on bridging the gap between country and city communities.

Cheap milk is great but the sad truth is it’s driving dairy farmers out of the industry. Farmers need a fair return for their produce. They need a fair go.

The Zombie Apocalypse If ‘The Walking Dead’ arrive, some of us’ll be prepared, even if others aren’t. The concept of the ‘zombie’ has been around since Noah was in nappies. We’ve all got a fascination with ghoulies, vampires, the undead and all the other monsters, with a plethora of kids cartoons glamorising the concepts and making them quite humorous. Zombies have featured in (too) many books, TV series and movies in the last decade or so, with the ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ signalling the end of the world as we know it. In just about every new story about them, small bands of isolated humans try and rebuild their lives, after the zombie influence saw a world come about with no power, no phones, no internet … sometimes it sounds like a blessing. With the world back to looking like “Little House on the Prairie” after the zombies take over, those of us who weren’t prepared for the arrival of this terrifying apocalypse in at least some way are the ones who just won’t make it. Back when we first moved out to Millthorpe, we looked into chucking a little windmill down in the back corner of the property. They were a bit of a flavour-of-the-month thing back then, with quite a few vendors spruiking their advantages at places like the Field Days, etc. A shiny new one that would have powered everything at our place (and a little bit more going back to the grid) was going to set us back about 25 grand. Sounds really steep, but doing the maths it really made sense in the long term, we’d have reaped the benefit back in spades. We planned to throw some solar panels on the roof too – retro and innovative at the same time. Then we found out we could only get a ‘rebate’ on one of these renewables … so that put paid to the windmill idea. Go figure, we were happy to invest in renewables, but the powers wouldn’t let us get into both. We’re not sure if the neighbours would have loved our windmill, what with

WORK CAMVISITS EMS GROUP all the hullaballoo made about them, but we didn’t get that far anyway. So … solar power it was. The generous rebate is now long gone, but our little sun-farm investment paid for itself plenty of times over in that first half a decade and it’s still delivering the goods. The game of checking ‘how many suns we made’ each day with the kids was really fun. So, let’s assume the zombies have arrived. As you’ve seen on TV shows like The Walking Dead and others, the undead can’t climb fences, open gates or crawl through holes, so as long as we keep the gate shut we should be sweet forever. We’ve got solar power to keep the bore running, meaning the vege gardens will be watered. Those sheeps we have down the back and the fruit trees that really don’t produce very much have just become a whole lot more important to us now that everyone’s lives have returned to one of subsistence. I guess we can build our own windmill now. I’m not sure how our former onioneating PM (segue into politics - it took me 500 words, but I got there) plans on keeping his habit going once those rotting walkers have taken over. His coalfired power plant will run out of fuel pretty quickly and his onion crop will need more than rainwater. If he wants to run the gauntlet from wherever he’s holed-up and come over to our place to grab a solar-fuelled freshly-grown borewatered onion, he’s welcome. I guess on the bright side once the zombies are here we won’t have to vote anymore, or put up with the infighting and selfishness. From anyone. Ever.

eep reading to the end for a great tip that might just save your financial future! Have you ever avoided doing something for fear of being embarrassed by the choices you’ve made in the past? It’s human nature to be a little self-conscious. Sometimes people will put off joining a gym because they want to lose a few kilos before they make their first appearance. Chances are they’d lose those first few kilos more easily with the gym’s help. Other times people will delay going to the dentist for fear of a hole being found. If there is a hole, getting it addressed sooner rather than later would be better (and probably cheaper!). There would be countless other examples and I know I’ve been guilty of things like this at numerous times in my life.

It’s often the same when it comes to getting financial advice. We’ve all made mistakes with money! I hit the big 4-0 last year and I’m not exactly where I’d like to be. Knowing what I know now, I wish I’d saved a bit harder, invested a bit more and bought a few less stupid things along the way. I’ve seen so many people over the years who’ve delayed getting help for fear they didn’t have enough money, for fear they weren’t saving enough, for fear they’d be judged for some money mistakes they’d made earlier in life. And when they finally get around to getting advice, they almost always say the same thing, “I wish I’d come to see you sooner!”. Sometimes asking for help or advice can be seen as a sign of weakness. It’s actually a sign of strength to be self-aware enough to realise you could use some help.

Many of the not-so-great decisions we make in life don’t have much of an impact because they can be rectified later. When it comes to money, it’s not quite so simple because of one thing we can’t turn back… TIME. If you’re in a dud super fund, if you’re taking too many years to pay off the mortgage, if you’re making poor investment decisions, if you’re not saving… all of these things mean you are costing your future self an ever-increasing amount. And we’re talking hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of dollars. That money is not just money. It’s money that you won’t have in the future and it will cost you and your loved ones choices, it will cost you lifestyle. However, as you’re reading this, you’re more

than likely finding it hard to connect with your future self. Your present self wants to live for today and worry about tomorrow later, but your future self is desperate for you to have one eye on tomorrow. Emerging singer/songwriter James Rutten will be joining Canowindra’s popular Sunday Sessions at the Bowlo in March! James Rutten has been said to have something Jeff Buckley-ish about him. His songs present an almost philosophical view of his own experiences, while the music reflects the many music styles James has explored over the years including alternative rock, gospel, folk rock and country. James emerged onto the Central West music scene less than twelve months ago as a solo, however brings with him a wealth of experience performing in choirs, musical theatre productions and a number of rock bands. James recently performed as part of the Museum Up late program at the Orange Regional Museum and has appeared on the 4 on the 4loor bill at The Victoria Hotel, Orange.

An enthusiastic performer, listeners can expect to hear wellcrafted original songs alongside acoustic versions of James’ favourite musical influences including Jack Johnson, David Gray, and Shawn Mullins. James will be performing at the Canowindra Community Bowls and Recreation Club from 3-6pm, Sunday 3 March 2019. For just $23, a bus will be running from Orange to Canowindra via Cudal, leaving Summer Street (opposite Hotel Canobolas) at 1.45pm. The Banjo Paterson Poetry Festival is in full swing around Orange! God. In the crazy busyness and mental and emotional rough and tumble of our everyday life, genuine peacefulness often seems to be more of a theoretical than practical concept. Yet, in Christ the same unshakeable peace that Paul experienced is available to us today. This is not some airy fairy unreal hope of being happy or comfortable all the time. It’s about knowing that whatever the practical realities of our life might be, if we are following Christ we are loved by an all powerful God who knows our best interests and on whom we can rely utterly.

LYNNE CELEBRATES 70th Lynne Noakes recently celebrated her 70th birthday with family and friends at the Royal Hotel. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers by her husband of almost 50 years, Clive Noakes. Everyone enjoyed a meal before Lynne cut the cake.

Following our Obituary of the Late Mr. Commonsense in OC Life on February 7, a reader sent us details of another sad loss.

LETTER FEEDBACK Readers Jeff writes: Good work with this initiative Bob. (Put Orange First News OCL 14th February) I agree with your comments regarding education, healthcare, scenery and lifestyle etc. An area where I believe we are lacking is in the continual delivery of quality service and product. I believe we would benefit from better training in the work place. Popular tourism, I believe our food and wine festivals are wonderful and highlight what the region offers. However, there are many gaps in between times. The wine is first class, not enough of the food outlets get it right all the time. There are a handful of restaurants that deliver every time you walk in the door. Most disappoint no matter the price. The quality of the accommodation is another issue in my mind. Easy to say, expensive to fix. Yes, I understand new, much improved tourist accommodation is being developed as I write. Nevertheless, it is a factor when you are competing against other tourist locations. Public toilets in Summer St., properly constructed and very well maintained toilets are a necessity for tourists. Many towns have them, positive word of mouth carries a very long way with visitors (even if the subject matter is the quality of the public toilets). Water security and not the way it has been thought through to date. I believe in the long run a major water sharing initiative between Bathurst, Orange and Dubbo must fly. I recognise this is a national issue, too much water is lost in a myriad of ways. Too much water is not captured when it could be directed elsewhere. Lastly, live music is an area where more growth could be achieved. Original artists visiting the region. All types of music, not just pop, rock. Big rock shows carry huge risk and the weather can be a factor. So smaller shows, slowly evolving growth. Orange could have a larger cultural status and following than it currently enjoys. Just a few thoughts. Editor: Thanks Jeff. You have raised some very worthwhile points. Let’s keep putting them out there until someone who can do something about them, starts listening.

Toilet issue

Mary M (from Manildra) writes: Dear Bob,

There has been a lot of talk in Life Mag of toilets being erected in Robertson Park, Orange. Once there were toilets there, almost opposite the Royal Hotel and near the Taxi rank in Lords Place. They were a trouble spot, especially at night and were eventually got rid of. This was many years ago so maybe few people remember. If for a stranger, fi nding a loo in Orange is a problem and quite inconvenient for locals, surely Council or local residents can come up with a solution, run a competition. Editor: Thanks Mary. After many years, Council still seems unable to solve the Robertson Park toilet issue. Just to clarify, my issue with toilets in Orange has nothing to do with Robertson Park, it’s more about visibility and access to toilets generally for travellers and visitors.

A Sad Loss The club was saddened to learn of the death this week of one of the club’s most valuable members. Someone else. Someone’s passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with the club since its beginning. He did far more than a normal person’s share of the work. Whenever there was a job to do, a social function to attend, funds to be raised, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everybody’s lips “Let’s Someone Else Do It”. It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the largest contributors of his time to the club, whenever there was a need for volunteers everyone just

I would like to respond to the “Thumbs Down” regarding truck drivers at roundabouts in your February 14 issue. I would like to point out that trucks have no choice but to cross over into the left lane when going through a roundabout or turning a corner. Hence, most trucks have a sign on the back “Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle”. I drive a truck and although not a huge truck it is a long wheel base. To navigate any turn, you have to utilise part of the left lane. I may be mistaken, but my understanding is that trucks have right of way in this instance. Editor: Thanks Cheryl for that. Laws aside, anyone attempting to pass a truck on a roundabout is just inviting trouble.

We wonder what we are going to do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to do the things Someone Else did? When we are asked to help, remember- WE CAN’T DEPEND ON SOMEONE ELSE.

Orange Lions Club head their annual Youth of the Year selection night at Duntryleague Golf Club on Thursday February 14th. Approximately 40 Lions and Partners along with the candidates and their families were in attendance. The 3 candidates had been nominated by their schools, following the school selection process. The Youth of the year program considers the candidates Academic Achievements, Sporting prowess, Community and Individual Character. The selected Candidate will progress to the Zone finals in Bathurst on February 24th with the possibility of progressing through District, State and Multi District levels. Last yearâ€™s nominee Paris Cappel made it to State level.

Centrals Centurions: Dunny and Fletch Rose to the Occasion 22-736 in one day! In what must go down as the greatest single day batting performance in the history of Centrals Cricket. Throw in the 173 from the Bonnor Cup on Friday and the mighty Rednblack amassed over 900 runs in the space of 24 hours. There were 5 half centuries and 2 unbeaten tons. It was truly wonderful to see the batters do what the bowlers have been doing all season. 1ST GRADE  DAY 1 V CYMS Not since the 23 October 2010 has a Central scored a 1st Grade Century. But 16 February 2019 saw that unenviable streak end. Club stalwart Nick Dunlop (131no) brought up his ton just after 5pm. Fitting, as Dunny was batting with Life Member Adam Shepherd back in 2010 as they both ended the day not out, Shep with 124. If that wasn’t enough, Fletcher Rose (102no) hit triple figures just over half an hour later. Captain Kennewell’s adopted son Rose to the challenge in an extraordinary display of hitting. His Century came in just 79 minutes and 90 balls. Wow!! Centrals declared 5-305, and will start next week needing the King to bowl as well as he batted and help take 20 wickets. 2ND GRADE  DAY 1 V CAVALIERS On Saturday saw day 1 of the David (Centrals) V Goliath (Cavs) top of the table clash. The day started poorly for Centrals as the skip lost the toss on a flat dry deck under a scorching sun, however, to his amazement the opposing skipper, did a Nonny, and bowled. The boys proceeded to bat the day out with the two main highlights being Drayza (51) scoring his 1st centrals 50 and he did so in patient style as he stuffed the Cavs attack. The second highlight was another maiden 2nd Grade 50 to Christian (58) in only his second game. Christian’s half ton came at a much faster clip and involved some very audacious shots. At stumps the boys were 7/242. The Centrals 2nd grade boys have now hit 8 half tons this season, 5 since Christmas alone. The 8 equals the centrals 2nd grade record in the MyCricket era. Surely a 100 is only just around the corner. 3RD GRADE V ORANGE CITY

After winning the toss, Coggo (26) and Wiggles (20) set about getting off to a good start, adding 43 for the first wicket. A minor collapse hit before the Wog entered, and then proceeded to smash the ball to all parts of Max Stewart for a superb 98. He was supported well by Timmy who scored 10 in a 67 run partnership with Spiro. With 189 on the board we were confident of defending our total and it got off to a cracking start with both Crowey and Pearso taking wickets of their first overs to have City reeling at 2/0!! Their first spell ended with them having 5 for stuff all!! On fire fellas. Popeye then jagged himself a cracking wicket with an inswinging yorker getting in on the act. Fauly did what Fauly does best and stole a couple of gems. Great to see Timmy getting himself a catch to go with a good batting display. Skippers made the decision to bring Crowey (3/10) back to have a crack at a Michelle but Pearso (4/9) had other ideas, taking the last two wickets before he got a chance, City all out for 43. What a ripper of a day, and our finals hopes kept alive. Those of you who know Spiro know that the story of the 98 will continue to be told for many years to come, with a lot of embellished details, but just be patient he will stop talking one day, maybe!! Keep wandering fellas and up the red and black!! BONNOR CUP V KINROSS Centrals broke the unwanted streak of night game losses on Friday with an emphatic victory. Jake smashed 7 sixes on his way to 76 off 43 balls, while Jack Dodds orchestrated a brilliant run a ball 50. The Iceman, playing his long awaited first Bonnor Cup game, picked up a wicket on his first ball. Great win, and great start to the weekend.

Rachel got wickets and young Cooper took a catch and got a run out. Excellent performance guys. Black We had some great fielding efforts on an ordinary looking Nashdale oval, supporting the bowlers. The best of the bowlers were our new man Harry with 4/10, Jackson with 2/41 also Brandon and Mckayla snagging one apiece. Donnie had a great day in the field with 2 catches, 2 run outs and two stumpings!!! Brandon also getting a catch. Batting was a huge improvement this week with the majority of the side getting on the board this week with some nice shots played. Top scorer was Tyler again playing some nice strokes to finish up on 18 followed by Harry on 9 and Owen and Brandon on 6. In the end going down by 10 runs in our most complete performance of the year. COMING UP 23 February – Centrals’ Pink Stumps / Ladies Day at Jack Brabham. All three teams are playing at Brabham, there will be food, drinks (some fantastic Phillip Shaw Wine) and entertainment for the whole family. Everyone is welcome, past, present, players, families and supporters! Spread the word to anyone in the Centrals family, and the other clubs on the day. It’s a great cause to support.

Contributed Local dragon boating team Colour City Dragons competed in the 2019 Lunar New Year Dragon Boat Races at Darling Harbour on Saturday 9th February. Colour City Dragon Boat Club President David Ball said there were 28 members competing as 4 crews in 8 heats and was proud of their team spirit. “I was really proud of how the club members pulled together to make the day of racing such a success. A big thank you goes to our sweeps, drummers, crew managers, boat loaders, pep talkers, volunteers, social event organisers and cheer squad of family and friends.” “The crews were also dedicated to training at Lake Canobolas over a number of months and showed true grit and team spirit on the day,” David said. 50

MARCH 3: SUNDAY SESSION AT THE BOWLO, CANOWINDRA Emerging singer/songwriter James Rutten will be joining Canowindra’s popular Sunday Sessions at the Bowlo in March! James will be performing at the Canowindra Community Bowls and Recreation Club from 3-6pm. For just $23, a bus will be running from Orange to Canowindra via Cudal, leaving Summer Street (opposite Hotel Canobolas) at 1.45pm. THUMBS DOWN to the man in an early model white tray back ute who lets his German Shepherd dog do its business under a tree in the park next to the Orange Army barracks. This inconsiderate person watched the dog do its business and didn’t pick up after it. Children often sit and play in the shade of this tree. It’s people like you that make things difficult for responsible dog owners.
