Last week you may have noticed a story I wrote headed Introducing Alive and Wise. It’s a concept I’m really keen on so please indulge me if it seems like I’m going over some of the same ground. The overall purpose of Alive and Wise is to try and encourage readers to make the time and effort to share some of their good experiences with other OCL readers. By good experiences I mean anything that others might benefit from if they knew what you knew. Sounds simple enough but for this to work and be valuable, it needs input from you our readers, not just me. Regular readers would be well aware that I have shared many great products, services and other things that I feel others would like to hear about. From time to time I’ve mentioned things like the extra low priced crumpets at Aldi, the real leg ham at the North Orange butcher and even shared a great energy deal that was on offer at Energy Australia. We’ve all bought products that we’re really happy with, we’ve used tradespeople that are exceptional and we’ve also discovered that exceptional bargain or opportunity that’s worth telling others about. That’s exactly what Alive and Wise is about. It’s your chance to tell others about things that will save them money, give them enjoyment, help them feel better, make

life easier for them and so on. My motivation is purely to help our readers hear about things that will help in one way or another. It’s that simple but as I said, it needs your input if it’s to be valuable and credible. All it takes is a short email or letter to me with the details and I’ll take it from there. Molong local Rebecca Treacy has been through more than most her age; at 22 she was diagnosed aplastic anaemia, a rare blood condition that occurs when your body stops producing enough new blood cells. Rebecca sat down with OC Life’s Chris Bennetts to tell her story, and she begins...“It’s long, it’s not very nice, but it’s the truth.”

Hi friends It’s week two of the New Year for us and as you can see, we’ve included a gloss cover on OCL again this week. We received some great comments following last week’s gloss cover so we thought we’d try a few more options. We’ll possibly experiment with a few different paper options over the next few weeks before we settle on a new format so feel free to send in any comments you have, good, bad or otherwise. CHRIS BENNETTS Rebecca’s journey began in September 2013 on a seemingly normal night out with friends. “My boyfriend and I were going to dinner with a group of friends, and as we were walking there I began to struggle with my breathing... I didn’t feel well at all. But I got through the dinner and went home to bed. In hindsight I should have gone to hospital that night because I was actually dying.” Rebecca knew something was majorly wrong when she awoke the next morning and couldn’t see out of her right eye. She quickly made her way to Emergency. “The doctors told me they were amazed that I had actually walked into emergency that morning... they had to do two blood tests on me because they couldn’t believe how low my blood cell count was. A healthy person’s count would be around 120-150...mine was at 28. The doctors told me they had seen dead people with higher blood cell counts than what I had.” Rebecca was emergency flown to Westmead Hospital with the initial assumption she had leukaemia. “I was placed in isolation with the initial thoughts that it could have been leukaemia, hepatitis or even AIDS. It wasn’t until the next morning when they did a bone marrow biopsy that they found I was suffering from aplastic anaemia which means your bone marrow fails to produce any blood cells... no red

cells, no white cells. Nothing.” Rebecca went on to explain that aplastic anaemia is a related blood disorder and not a form of cancer, although you are still treated like a cancer patient, and that she would need a bone marrow transplant to start building healthy blood cells again. “I waited 8 months to find a donor match. During that time I was back in Orange doing blood drives and raising awareness. I went through big changes... I wasn’t allowed to work anymore which meant I had to move out of my house. I couldn’t go to the gym, which was my passion, I was training 5-6 days a week. It was heart breaking; looking back on that time makes me so sad.” After 8 months of waiting Rebecca finally found a M.U.D (matched unrelated donor) and things began to progress. “I was admitted on the 12th of May and began 3 days of chemotherapy in preparation for the bone marrow transplant. Chemo kills all your cells, wipes you out, so you are starting with a clean slate as it were. “The bone marrow transplant was not as harrowing as you may imagine, it was much like a blood transfusion and the donor cells find their way into the bone and starts reproducing... it really is quite fascinating.” Rebecca knew she would spend the next 6-8 weeks in isolation as her body took on the donor bone marrow. During this period Rebecca had little to no immune system, so something as simple as a common cold could be life threatening.

“Isolation meant being in a room the size of your average family bathroom with very little contact. If people wanted to visit me they would have to put on gloves, gown, and a mask, it was a big production! There was also the constant washing of the hands, any bacteria is seen as a risk so it is very isolating to say the least.” After 5 weeks of this testing time Rebecca got the news she was hoping for, the donor bone marrow had started to graft and her counts were on the rise. Everything was looking good. “So I was like ‘awesome I’ve done it!’ it was all good news. The doctor discharged me to being an outpatient and everything seemed to be going to plan.” Everything was going to plan until a week later when Rebecca had her first blood test. The next day she got a call she had been dreading. “He told me my counts were dropping again and we would have to do another bone marrow biopsy to see if the donor cells had actually grafted properly.” The news got worst for Rebecca; the second biopsy revealed that the transplant had failed as the bone marrow had been rejected. This meant another round of chemo and a new bone marrow had to be found. “I was devastated, I was a mess... it really was the worst case scenario. I felt like I had just gone through hell and got out the other side... only to find out I had to walk back through.” Rebecca’s story will conclude in next week’s OC Life.

The annual, seven-race event—The Picnic Races—is set to be a winner with Racing Orange excited to be hosting the 2015 event this Saturday. ASHLEA PRITCHARD The tradition of the Picnic Races has always been a fun and safe day for the whole family to enjoy which remains the focus of the Racing Orange Committee for the 2015 meeting. There will be kid-friendly activities including a free jumping castle, as well as live music under the trees. “We’d like to give families a day where they are not

constantly digging into their pockets so we are offering a free jumping castle and free admission for children under 15,” said Racing Orange committee member Amanda Cox. “Bring your whole family young and old. The fashions on the field is always impressive and hotly

contended particularly at the picnic races. There are thousands of dollars in prizes that have been generously donated by local businesses. Why a beard? As I’m unable afford to maintain a range of scarfs I decided to grow my own. Also, winter is coming. How long do you spend manicuring your beard? An occasional brush before special occasions like the opera and semi-regular splattering of bugs and various insects gleaned from riding, but nothing else, beard oil is for hipsters. What are your top three tips for those growing beards? Destroy any razor blade you find hiding in your bathroom cabinet, with great vengeance and furious anger. After much experimentation I’ve found that tuna promotes beard growth. Don’t shave.

While cruising at 40,000 feet, the airplane shuddered and Mr. Benson looked out the window. “Good lord!” he screamed, “one of the engines just blew up!” Other passengers left their seats and came running over; suddenly the aircraft was rocked by a second blast as yet another engine exploded on the other side. The passengers were in a panic now, and even the stewardesses couldn’t maintain order. Just then, standing tall and smiling confidently, the pilot strode from the cockpit and assured everyone that there was nothing to worry about. His words and his demeanor seemed made most of the

passengers feel better, and they sat down as the pilot calmly walked to the door of the aircraft. There, he grabbed several packages from under the seats and began handing them to the flight attendants. Each crew member attached the package to their backs. “Say,” spoke up an alert passenger, “aren’t those parachutes?” The pilot said they were. The passenger went on, “But I thought you said there was nothing to worry about?” “There isn’t,” replied the pilot as a third engine exploded. “We’re going to get help.”

Ashlea Pritchard Despite living in Orange, recent tragedies in Cobar have hit close to home for Annie Simpson. Annie lives in the Canobolas district on gorgeous acreage overlooking Mount Canobolas, blessed with rows of fruit trees laden with ripe fruit throughout the past few months. While favourable seasonal conditions meant the Simpson family had lovely fruit on her tress, this was a sad time. Her friends Margaret and Ian Settree had recently been murdered. Firefighter Daniel Howard – another friend – had lost his life in a house fire a month earlier; as well as a death at the mine and young people involved in car accidents. Diagnosed with MS whilst living in Cobar 10 years ago; Mrs Simpson was eager to help the grieving community which she still has connections with. “They were a very good community to me when I got sick, and especially that particular couple who were very caring for me and of my situation,” she said. Annie and her daughter Jess picked a tonne and a half of cherries

– Annie on her gopher and Jess on the ladder - took them to Cobar and sold them with all proceeds going to the Settree’s charity of choice, Batyr, a community program that’s aimed towards youth in rural and remote areas battling with mental illness. Eeerily, the couple had asked for donations to be made to Batyr in lieu of flowers in the event of their death. “[Margaret and Ian] were just involved in everything and had supported the community for 40 years,” Mrs Simpson said. “So I was motivated to go out there knowing the community was in mourning yet again, and that Christmas is about a lot of things. One of the good things is cherries.” The whole lot was purchased within three and a half hours raising a significant amount for the charity foundation. “It was really well received. We raised $3,800 and the feedback from the community about my effort that I got was so positive,” she said. “It gave me great joy to support a community that had experienced so much tragedy. But also to bring awareness to mental health in rural and remote areas because it’s a really big issue.” For more information about this charity, head to www.batyr.com.au.

New YeAr solutioNs to sAve GleNroi As 2015 rolled in, so did A formAl committee for the not-for-profit community group, sAving glenroi. Ashlea Pritchard Elected as the committee’s President was Melissa Hatton, with Joe Maric elected as Vice President. With formalities in place, they both said there are achievable goals for the committee to reach for, and plenty of positive community re-enforcement to keep the motivation high. Besides the community social days – with the next to be held this Saturday – there’s a list of improvements both Ms Hatton and Mr Maric believe are needed to enrich the Glenroi community. Whilst it could be a wish list of sorts, they say it’s achievable and will be put to great use. The top wish list items are: to get the Edye Park basketball courts re-sealed; community barbecues installed; assurance of regular grounds maintenance; bike/walking paths in place and possible park benches. It’s about a ‘whole of Orange’ approach, suggested Mr Maric. “We can do our part, but we can only go so far,” he said. “There’s a wide range of cultural communities within Glenroi that don’t even get the opportunity to come together and they should. The only way that’s going to happen is by having the facilities where people can come together.” It’s about life be in it, getting people off their

couches, getting them out in the community with the kids and going down to the park.” Mr Maric said plans are already being put together for at least the community barbecues. Ms Hatton said working together with local branches of the PCYC, Family and Community Services NSW, Fusion, CareWest, Rock the Rim, an Anglican parish and various local businesses has seen what was a general concept starting to form into a movement. “We’re like a family now. And we know that the community needs us and it’s just a matter of proving to them that they can trust us. This is why we’ve got to start small and build up,” Ms Hatton said. “It’s little steps at this stage. We’re just getting ourselves known and getting the community’s support. Then, once we’ve got the support, we can make bigger things happen. We’re trying to do one bit at a time.” The formal committee will meet once a month, with community fun-day events planned for every fortnight.

A barbecue, soccer game, as well as arts and craft activities will be held at edye park this saturday from 12pm to 2pm.

Two new developments, in Bletchington Street and Icely Road, will provide 21 dwellings for eligible tenants, easing the burden of low income housing in the process. The project has been established by Housing Plus, the region’s leading provider in affordable and social housing. Housing Plus CEO, Karen Andrew, said the 21 units consisted of 10 one-bedroom units, 10 two-bedroom units and one four-bedroom unit and should be ready for occupation by tenants in early February and applications for these properties are now invited. “Affordable rental housing is housing that meets the needs of people on low to moderate incomes and is priced below the current market rent so that they can afford other basic living costs such as food, clothing, transport, medical care and education,” Mrs Andrew explained. “Many people need affordable rental housing for a range of reasons including people who work full or part -time in lower paying jobs. Mrs Andrew noted affordable rental housing in NSW was usually managed by not-for-profit community housing providers like Housing Plus. “To be eligible for affordable housing, prospective tenants must meet a range of criteria and have a stable income with the first adult not earning more than $47,289, however eligibility for affordable housing mostly depends on the household income and the number of people including children who live in the household. ” Household income must be within the maximum limits set by the NSW Government, Mrs Andrew added. As well as the two Orange housing developments, Housing Plus has recently opened a similar complex in Mudgee, while 12 units in Bathurst are also due for completion in February. CONTRIBUTED James suffers from a genetic disorder called Retinitis Pigmentosa which causes a degeneration of the retina. This disease was diagnosed when James was 16 years old after he suffered from rapidly decreasing vision. He was legally blind at 21 years of age and completely blind by his early 30’s. As a direct result of his declining vision, James focussed his sporting efforts on the fields of swimming and rowing and during the 1990’s represented Australia in both these sports as a disabled athlete. In the mid 1990’s James decided to attempt the English Channel after meeting the inspirational Australian swimmer Des Renford and was successful on his first attempt in 1998. He then went on to

successfully complete some of the most difficult marathon swims in the world over the next ten years including the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, The Strait of Gibraltar, New Zealand’s Cook Strait and the Catalina Channel. In 2010, his accomplishments were recognised when he was inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame. In November 2011, James completed a 12km swim from Malabar to Bondi beach and in September 2012 he completed a swim from Collaroy to North Steyne beach. Both of these swims were to raise money for the Fred Hollows Foundation. In addition to his swimming accomplishments, James is the Ambassador for the Rainbow Club; a not for profit organisation which offers swimming lessons for children with disabilities, he is also a fund raiser for the Fred Hollows Foundation; which focuses on blindness prevention and indigenous health. James works full-time for the Australian Tax Office, is married and has a five year old daughter. Clr Ferguson said ‘Council is looking forward to hosting James as the Australia Day Ambassador to officiate the Blayney Shire Australia Day festivities to be held on Monday 26 January 2015 at Heritage Park, Adelaide Street, Blayney.’ James will also be involved with festivities at the Carcoar Australia Day following the morning formalities.

Parkes elvis Festival Thirty seven years after Elvis left the building, the Parkes Elvis Festival celebrated what would have been his 80th Birthday with style on the weekend. With records breaking crowds of over 20,000, many from Orange made the pilgrimage to Parkes, donned a wig and glasses for a weekend of all things Elvis. For me, the weekend started with meeting the Elvis Express and travelling with hard core Elvis fans to Parkes. The 80th Gala Birthday Dinner, emceed by former Yellow Wiggle and Elvis memorabilia collector Greg Page was definitely a highlight. The base at Orange is now a 24-hour, seven days per week operation and new retrieval doctors are available for every flight and additional paramedics dedicated to helicopter retrieval. The service is now saving even more lives (just like we said it would when we were fighting for it). An additional $2.5 million investment by the NSW Government has also been allocated annually for helicopter retrieval services from the Orange helicopter base from July 2014 as part of the commencement of 24/7 operations.

In further good news, Orange will now be receiving a new aircraft, the larger Augusta Westland 139, which was a key submission Andrew made to the Review Panel. Whilst the current helicopter does the job and is an excellent machine, it does have difficulties taking off under certain conditions under a full load. The new chopper solves this problem, is bigger with more room for patients, has the ability to carry sick babies and has an extended range into Western NSW.

COntainer DePOsit sCHeme I am delighted that the NSW Government is backing a container deposit scheme (CDS). Litter is a huge problem in regional NSW and this policy initiative will make a significant contribution to addressing it. The NSW Government has been examining different methods used in Australia and around the world to reduce litter and to increase the recycling of container waste and is currently working with industry and the community to refine the design principles. It’s certainly an important step in protecting the environmental health of our parks, rivers and towns.

Central West Gymnastics are again hosting numerous budding Gymnasts as part of their School Holiday Coaching Camps. The Oracle of the OCLife?

upcoming State election, that’s almost a no-brainer, but I have to start somewhere. At the time of writing this column, the Coalition were at the totally unimpressive odds of $1.05, with Labor at a juicy $9.00. No contest, so let’s to move something a bit more left field. I’m going to risk losing my shirt, have a wild stab and say that New Zealand (yep, believe it) are going to win the One Day Cricket World Cup. They’ve got a lot of home matches and are riding a bit of a wave at present. Brendan McCullum will be player of the tournament, too – you heard it here first. After the events of recent weeks in Sydney and in France, the world would have its head in the sand if it were thinking we’ve seen the worst of the nastiness involving Islamic State. It would be nice to think the superpowers might band together to do something about these troubles, but then, the I.S. don’t believe anyone is a superpower. Blind Freddie can see this is going to get worse before it gets better, so I don’t suppose I can really get any points for making a sombre prediction. In what amounts to more of a wish than a prediction, those of us with internet speeds rivalling a Galapagos Tortoise may finally get access to the NBN. A bold wish indeed. The music world might wake up to itself too, and produce some tunes that will be around for more than three weeks. There’ll always be a boy band or two for us oldies to make fun of, but 2015 might see the new Bruce Springsteen or Elton John emerge from amongst the ‘four-chord wonders’. If the Wallabies and Canterbury end up holding silverware I’ll be the first to say ‘I told you so’! Nothing but silence if they both fall flat though. Let’s chat again about my visions again later on this year … hopefully I got something right.

We will revisit this column in 12 months and see how I went with my predictions for the year of 2015. Has 2015 got something big in store for you? Are you expecting it to be a memorable year, a year with some watershed moments, a year of great change, or maybe a year of consolidation? I thought I’d have a crack at making some predictions of outcomes of some of the major events over the next 12 months. I love the part in the movie ‘Back To The Future’ where the bad guy of the trilogy, Biff Tannen gets hold of a sports almanac from the 90s, travels back to 1955 and gives it to himself. He then proceeds to make gazillions as he places winning bets on all kinds of events where he already knows the result. One could only dream of having the gift of predicting the future (and hence having the power to affect the outcome of future happenings). I could use this power to put some hard-earned on the winner of the Bathurst 1000, or something similar and then retire to Palm Cove to smoke cigars, drink cabernet and have bikini girls feed me grapes … or I could become a superhero of sorts, and try to make a difference in the world by changing things so unpleasantness didn’t occur. If only. I’m still living on the glory of picking the trifecta in the Melbourne Cup way back in 2010. Lucky? No Way – skill! Can I transfer this ‘vision’ to some predictions for 2015, let’s see. No-one is going to call me the greatest soothsayer of all-time for predicting that the Liberal-Nationals will win the

9 January, 2015 Dear Editor, The NSW Rural Fire Service Association (RFSA), as the official representative organisation of the members of the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS), would like to commend the volunteers and staff of the service for providing assistance to communities in South Australia and Victoria during the recent bushfire emergencies. Several hundred NSW Rural Fire Service volunteers and staff have selflessly given up their time over the past week, at a time many Australians traditionally spend with family or taking a well earned break from work, to help fight these fires, which destroyed around thirty homes, businesses, a large number of sheds and livestock. Each and every community across the state should be proud of their local Rural Fire Brigades as they get on with the job of protecting the local community. Not only are they willing to do this but also are willing to give up their time and in many cases income to help other communities in other states at a time of crisis. Our NSW RFS volunteers are people like you and me, who go that extra mile, happy to be there day and night to help protect you, and when called upon immediately put up their hand to help others. Next time you see one of the men and women who wear the NSW RFS uniform, please take a moment to think about what they do in serving our local community during a time of most need. Yours faithfully,

60TH wEddING ANNIVERSARy On the 7th of January Fred and Shirley Roberts celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Fred Roberts Married Shirley Woods in 1955 at the Methodist (Uniting) Church in Anson Street Orange with Rev Wrightson performing the ceremony. Fred and Shirley have two children. Wayne who lives in Sydney and Diane who lives in Orange and who is married to Brian Livingstone. They also have 2 Granddaughters, Melissa and Partner John Konjetic and Belinda and husband Stewart Jenkins. The couple are great grandparents to Tomi and Jabov (Jak) due any day, sons of Melissa, also Jayden, Mia, Lochlan, Courtney and Jacob children of Belinda. Fred and Shirley have lived in Orange all their married life and been very involved with the Orange Cycle Club when

the bike track was first resurfaced for the first time. They also took riders including their son Wayne to competitions throughout NSW. Congratulations Fred and Shirley on your great mile stone. Love brought you together As husband and wife And gave each of you A best Friend for life.

PeoPle suffering from Type 2 diabetes living in orange and surrounding areas who suffer with painful neuropathy in their legs are needed for pain relief research by a physiotherapy honours student at Charles sturt university (Csu) in orange. The research will be conducted over 27 days in January and february 2015 to compare the pain relief effects of two different types of electrical stimulation for people with painful leg symptoms due to diabetic neuropathy. The participants will have the opportunity to use a pain relief machine (Tens) at no cost to them. Participants will be required to attend four short appointments at Charles sturt university in orange. During the study each participant will be apply the first treatment at home each day for 10 days, followed by no treatment for 7 days and then using the Tens again, this time with different settings, for another 10 days at home. During this time, it is expected that the subjects’ level of pain will reduce, with the aim of the research to determine if one setting works better than another one. in order to able to enrol in this study as a participant, you must have less than a tenyear history of Type 2 diabetes and you will have experienced painful diabetic neuropathy symptoms for six months or longer. other tools, such as recent blood test results and questionnaires, will also be used to assess your eligibility. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (Tens) is a safe treatment with minimal risk of adverse effects and can be used for many different types of pain. The research has been approved by Csu ethics Committee and is being closely supervised by three highly qualified and experienced Csu academics. Connecting to sporting facilities at Moulder Park will be a lot easier given the installation of a concrete walkway originally built for the 2000 Sydney Olympics village. JAMIE STEDMAN A suitable fit for a former walkway to Olympic sporting events has been found with a ‘new’ footbridge making its home in Orange. “The steel-reinforced concrete walkway was installed to connect the John Lomas skate park, sport oval and velodrome users and ease access to the toilet facilities for patrons of the precinct,” said Cr Reg Kidd. Not only will the newly installed, 17-meter long footbridge help to connect people with the various sporting facilities at the Moulder Park precinct; but

it’s expected to be part of a larger, long-term project. As part of the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) Cycleways program, a grant of $100,000 will be used to install and connect the Moulder Street park precinct with other Cycle paths. Another $25,000 grant from the NSW Sport & Recreation Department’s Participation and Facility Program will be used to install a new climbing frame and a five-metre high swing alongside the bridge at the skate park. Let’s hope current users of the facilities do all they can to preserve its longevity for future users.

WHO AM I?

I was born on February 14, 1956, in Toronto, Canada, the son of English parents, who migrated to North America after WWII. We relocated to England and then when I was 10 we moved to Australia. Educated at Mosman Primary School and Pittwater High, I went on to acting institute NIDA in 1974. My career break came in 1981 when I was cast as Jim Craig in The Man From Snowy River. Two years later I starred as the lead in the film Phar Lap: Heart of a Nation, and then 1986’s Windrider with Nicole Kidman. I landed the role of a young Frank Sinatra in a mini-series produced by the singer’s daughter which steered my career to musical roles. I am married to Mandy Carnie; we have three children.

Back By popular demand at the extra 4 on the 4loor this weekend are l.o G.; renamed slamdaddy Given their latest Band memBer addition. In the midst of getting back into performing live are past members of DepriVation. DepriVation were an Orange-based band who took their trash metal throughout Australia and the US from 2006 to 2013. As band members came and went; the conclusion of Dep drew some of the band alumni to form The Murdering. Now, comes time for another re-awaking of sorts with the forming of Slamdaddy.

Slamdaddy consists of former Dep musos Orry Swann, George Olsen and Lachlan Harrison; alongside Daryl Kennewell. It’s been about two months that the band have been together rehearsing and playing acoustic grunge live. “We all hold our own…and it’s fun,” said Orry about Slamdaddy members. While it is early days for the band at the moment, he said it’s a mixture of passion and

pipeline already. “We’ve got some riffs going and melodies that we want to put together and make some harmonies…we think we’ve got some ingredients to put into a pot but nothing too epic just yet,” he said. Slamdaddy feature on the 4 on the 4loor line-up alongside opener James Croke (the winner of Lander’s Music’s ‘The Next Big Thing’ competition), Alix Riley and The Burn Card.

Then Father Murphy walked up to O’Toole and said, “Do you want to go to heaven?” O’Toole said, “No, I don’t Father.” The priest said, “I don’t believe this. You mean to tell me that when you die you don’t want to go to heaven?” O’Toole said, “Oh, when I die, yes. I thought you were getting a group together to go right now.”

When pondering about whether or not to host live music in a public venue; it’s often the amount of patrons expected – and the drinks sold at the bar – that often define if the gig is on or not. With it difficult to organise gigs — and especially all ages gigs—in public venues; increasingly the CWA hall is becoming the place to be. Playing at the hall this weekend are five local acts: Samantha Jean, Drones, Acrylic ACID, Bobby Shades and Tempermore from 5pm. Orange City Life caught up with gig organiser and Tempermore vocalists/guitarist Corey Roche to find out more… His band’s sound has a brooding, grunge mood; seemingly perfect for this underground movement. How long have Tempermore been together? What inspired you to form a band? Officially the band finalised in early December when our drummer joined the ranks. We originally all went to Orange TAFE where we studied music and developed our thirst for what we are doing now. Who/what are your influences? Our influences are very broad but as an example, some of the most influential include The Angles, Violent Soho, Bliss’n’Esso, Bluejuice, Sunk Loto and INXS to name a few. How would you describe your music? We play a variety of styles. My best advice is to come and check us out. Why did you want to be a part of this local gig at the CWA hall? Plus, how was it organised? We are attempting to push original and live music. The work and formation of Underground Sound is to involve young enthusiastic people who are interested in music to come together at these events as a community to enjoy live music. What different to having a gig in this space compared to other venues? The ability of playing our original music. Also giving another place to enjoy live music and entertainment. What’s next for Tempermore? Continue to create original music. We’re working on recording an EP, and growth in the community to feed our appetite for playing live shows and spreading our love of music. The van and all the equipment used in the van were paid for over the years by the travelling public through the donations tin. During the period 1996 to 2014, 18,444 people were served from 8,018 vehicles that passed through Canowindra. During this period also, an average of 25 to 30 volunteers operated the site over any oneholiday period. The management committee which met after each holiday period, apart from deciding the van’s next operation, determined the disbursement of surplus funds held in the account. were approved, only after the Canowindra High School Young Driver Education programme needs were considered. These funds were given in conjunction with the RYDA and Rotary, young driver campaigns. The March 1996 meeting decided that the High School should come first. Angel Flight and Camp Quality were supported in later years. Over the whole period marvellous support has been received from Canowindra individuals and businesses. Of note is that support given by the late Cr. Don Lawrence. As usual, there are always stalwarts in any organisation who ensure its survival and stability. Such long serving members of the committee were the late Molly Daley (initial Treasurer) Deirdre White, current Treasurer and Muriel Yell, long time Secretary.

A management committee was formed on which two representatives of each volunteer service organisation had agreed to work the site. The committee decided the days and times of rosters on which the site would work. 12 local community service organisations have variously participated in the last 19 years, most for several years. CWA, Red Cross, Billican Productions, Rotary, Masonic Lodge and Lions, the longest serving, while 6 others have fitted in when a gap occurred and there was a need in the rostering. More recently the Corner Stone Community, Mid West Historic Car Club and Cowra Antique Vehicle Club, joined. In the early years, one of the first to join in was the SES, APEX and local Fire Brigade; however community responsibility made it difficult for them to continue due to “on call” requirements. Each organisation was asked

to provide two of its members to serve for two hours at a time in the van. On several occasions, students from Canowindra High School also served. The concept and very successful operation of the site at Morris Park was made possible because of the support given by the then RTA and Cabonne Council. RTA now RMS, provided underground cable and “box” connected to Council’s power at the Morris Park ablutions block and provided it at no cost. Council has progressively upgraded the site to the current standard. RMS has only recently installed new operating roads signs as a trial for the rest of NSW. The “safe” stowage of the Driver Reviver Van and its

The danger of procrastination At my place there are a number of jobs that have been waiting for me to finish. One example: I put a deck on the back of my place eight years ago. I have still not painted the roof beams; put the cladding back on the house... I am sure you could make a similar procrastination list. Most of the things we procrastinate about are things that can wait. But there are some things many of us procrastinate about that we really shouldn’t put off. One of those things is the whole God question. Many people I know

just put that question in the ‘later’ basket. This is a big question that impacts on who we are, what is right and wrong, and the biggie of what lies ahead after death. Surely this question deserves more than just an assumption? As a Christian, I will say a great place to start is to read the bible, preferably starting with a Gospel. But really, all I ask is that you stop procrastinating and check out the evidence. Find answers that pass more than just the “this is what I reckon” test.

My take on it.. Good At the time of writing, the Socceroos had won their only match of the Asian Cup. That they won it 4-1 will no doubt have pleased Coach Ange Postecoglou, but the very weak goal conceived will certainly give the lads something to work on at training prior to Tuesday’s game against a much tougher Oman. A match they are now entering without Captain Mile Jedniak after he injured his ankle last Friday. How bloody good is Tim Cahill? He was, as always, brilliant with Postecoglou quoted as saying “There wouldn’t be a defender in the world today that would like to be one-onone with Tim Cahill.” The guy can play and seems to get better with age. Surprise selection Massimo Luongo eliminated any doubt about his selection in the starting side picking up a goal in his man of the match performance. Pleasingly, up to now, Soccer has not been in the news for any wrongdoings. How great it would be if it stays that way. The way the Socceroos spread the ball, albeit against a lesser talented side in Kuwait, was lovely to watch. Attacking, enterprising and aggressive Soccer. Pretty much the Australian blueprint for most sport. It’s a proven formula and hey, if it ain’t broke… The Aussies were heavily favoured to win that game and supporters will expect no less when they take the field against Oman who will not be handing the Socceroos any favours. Our boys will have to earn this one. Despite netting the first goal, the halftime stats told the tale for the hapless Kuwaitis; the Socceroos had over 60% of possession. The performance wasn’t perfect; Kuwait missed a couple of chances, but at least the Aussies got off to the start they needed. Considering the rain that fell, the Aussies were able to blow away some cobwebs, work on their combinations and find some form. They seem to be building very nicely indeed. The only concern for Postecoglou will be deciding which of the two Marks – Bresciano or Milligan – should fill in for the ruled-out Jedniak. With two players of such calibre and experience, it’s not a bad problem to have.

BAd The Squad chosen for the One Day World cup has been announced with the Aussie side looking like this: David Warner, Aaron Finch, Shane Watson, Steve Smith, Michael Clarke (capt), George Bailey (vicecapt), Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Marsh, James Faulkner, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Xavier Doherty. It’s a good and not un-expected squad of players but the decision to make George Bailey vice-Captain has me flabbergasted. This means that if Clarke fails in his bid to get fit for the tournament, Bailey will be skipper. Yes, I’m fully aware that he is the current Short form Captain but surely that job should now fall to Steven Smith. He IS the man chosen as most likely to take over long-term from Clarke. And it turns out the Captaincy does his batting some good. Selectors have said that they fear Smith may be too “mentally exhausted” from his captaincy duties during the Test series against India… What a giant load of crap! Surely, this was a consideration when first anointing him to the job! It’s not like this World Cup has just been scheduled. The 50 over Tournament seems the perfect opportunity for Smith to hone his role. If Clarke isn’t there who better to lean on than Bailey? It’s at best a strange decision. Clarke has already been ruled out of Australia’s opening clash against England on February 14 and will be scratched from the competition altogether if not fit for the second game on February 21 against Bangladesh. Australia, England and India go head to head in the Tri-Series starting Friday and even that would have been the ideal warmup for Smith but Bailey will have the reigns. As for Favouritism for the tournament, I vote the Kiwi’s to be playing our men in the Final on March 29. They have blown away all before them this season and have some genuine talent across the board in their current squad. In years past they always had some very good player with a mix of pretty good players thrown in but not this lot. They are a very complete side at the moment and will give the comp a real good crack. And who would I have chosen?

Cameron Boyce would come in for Xavier Doherty – and Nathan Lyon can consider himself unlucky – outside of the captaincy debacle, I’m pretty satisfied with the squad. I imagine Joe Burns is on standby for Clarke should he be ruled out but maybe they’ll look at someone like Ben Cutting instead.

UGLY Onnnneeeeehundredaneighteee… Chairs, tables and other various bits of debris were tossed around at The Darts Invitational Challenge held at Etihad Stadium last Saturday. Reports state that the public order response team was dispatched to the stadium at 8.40pm after the spectators went “completely mental”. It was 8.40 at night! How much grog could they have possible driven into themselves in that time? Apparently they stadium only had mid-strength beer on sale. Perhaps that started frustrations… Eventual winner – Dutch professional and world number one Michael van Gerwen seemed unimpressed. And why wouldn’t he be? It’s a long way to come to Australia and see “fans” carry on like that. Why do it? Why pay to go to an event and then just play up like that? I don’t understand it. Many of the ‘supporters’ dressed up for the event – which seems to be tradition at the Darts – and still played up. It’s a lot of expense and trouble to go to behave like that. Apparently there was “70 security staff on hand” who surely should have been able to quieten any idiots as soon as they started but it must’ve gotten out of hand almost immediately. Melbourne claims to be the sporting capital of this country but at the moment the only title they can claim is most idiots at one venue. Congrats. It’s such a shame when the few ruin something for the many. Many fans travelled from inter-state for the event and had to put up with the actions of theses fools. Their trip and experience of Melbourne ruined. Darts is huge in Europe, especially in the UK and this was our chance to showcase what we can offer to a worldwide audience. That image now tarnished by foolhardy, alcohol-fuelled idiots. Congrats again.
