WARM COLOUR It’s images like this that help us forget the cold of winter, even if it’s only for a short time. At one point last week, the thermometer dropped to -7 in parts of Orange, and it felt like -12, but thankfully that was in the middle of the night. And the good news? It’s less than two months to Spring so bring it on! PHOTO TAKEN IN AUTUMN AT FOUR MILE CREEK BY ALF MANCIAGLI.

HEALTH&LIFESTYLE WORDS BY ZANNA MUNRO
A LIFE WELL-LIVED THE ORANGE COMMUNITY PAYS HOMAGE TO GRANT LOCKWOOD FROM THE BEEKEEPERS INN Grant Lockwood, Owner of the family business The Beekeepers Inn / Goldfields Honey, sadly passed away on June 5th after a short illness. The BeeKeepers Inn is a fantastic local business. I’m sure you’ve driven past it numerous times on your way towards Bathurst but have you stopped in? You will be pleasantly surprised. It’s such a beautiful space with a lovely fully licensed café, honey taste testing, beautiful local and regional produce, antiques and also beer tasting. It’s a business that Grant worked very hard to create so this week we want to pay our respects to this hardworking local man. I caught up with Grant’s daughter Claire Bennett and we discussed Grant’s passion and what inspired him to create The BeeKeepers Inn. “Dad’s love of Australian history inspired him to buy the 1859 Cobb and Co Stop-over which he lovingly restored to what is now known as ‘The Beekeepers Inn’. His love of food, farming, tourism, antiques and of course bees and honey, created his 30

beloved establishment.” Grant was a well respected local man who brought so much to the Orange community. Working closely with his family brought him joy every day. Grant was very proud to be able to work with his four children and wife every day and has passed on his passion to them all. Grant loved to share his extensive knowledge to all sections of the community, school groups, tourists, passers-by, locals, community clubs and the elderly. He never asked for anything in return. “Dad was a quite but generous person, often giving his time to educate school groups and university students on the beekeeping industry. He was involved in farmers markets, apiarist association, OCC waste management and more recently the Orange Historical Society. “Through donations he supported various local charities and schools on a yearly basis. He loved the central ranges, the towns of Bathurst and Orange and surrounding villages.”
Grant’s legacy will live on and a special room called “Grant’s museum” will soon be opened at The Beekeepers Inn. “Dad was a great lover of Australian history and antiques. Before his passing he was getting ready to open a special room dedicated to Australian history. Our family will now dedicate this room and display his favourite items collected throughout his lifetime. This room will be called Grant's museum. “Dad will always be known for his hard work and dedication in making the beekeeping industry a more professional agricultural industry,” Claire said. “Beekeeping since he was 16 years old until he passed at 59, expanding his business from just six hives to more than 6000. He was very proud of the local honeys produced in this area; yellow box, stringy bark, iron bark, apple box and canola just to name a few. His favourite saying was ‘I haven’t had a day off since 1976’”. Grant will be sadly missed by his family, employees, fellow beekeepers, local farmers and members of the Orange community.

A CHECK-UP WITH
It’s been a while, but after much searching, I’ve found what I hope to be one of the most inspiring interviewees yet. Jamie Newman is the Chief Executive Officer at the Orange Aboriginal Medical Service, which prides itself for providing free healthcare to the indigenous and non-indigenous community right here in Orange. I sat down with Jamie in his office and was unprepared for the social enlightenment I was about to receive. HOW WAS THE OAMS ORIGINALLY FOUNDED? “We started developing the organisation back in 1998 when it was brought to our attention by local GP Ken Hazelton that we should have an Aboriginal Medical Service in Orange. At that time, I was an Aboriginal education officer but I’d never even heard of the AMS. We lobbied ATSIC with other GPs, the local council, even the at-that-time Member for Calare Peter Andren for an AMS branch here in Orange which lasted for 6 years, with no guarantee of support, no guarantee of funding, but we were supported by the local community, and what was birthed as an idea has now come into fruition – now, as it’s CEO, I’m proud of what we’ve achieved to date.”
WHAT KIND OF MEDICAL SERVICES DOES OAMS PROVIDE? “The current healthcare system focuses on ‘GP led services’ so we have a team of general practitioners here, ranging from those with years of experience, to fairly new GPs; we have registrars and medical students request to work here and it’s up to us whether we hire them. We also have a dental program, we have nurses who look after chronically ill people, child and family health services, a visiting psychiatrist, an optometrist program and soon an audiology program, all of which is completely free. The motto we have here is, ‘Illness and disease doesn’t discriminate, neither should we.’”
HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE EMPLOYED AT OAMS? HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU ASSIST? “At last count, we had 45 people employed here, full-time and part-time. For the 12 years we’ve been operating, we’d have seen at least 25,000 - 30,000 people and our current regular clients 34

– someone who’s accessed the service at least twice a month – “It sort of leans into my own upbringing. My dad was a very are up to about three-and-a-half thousand people, with 65% of ‘either you work in this world or you get nowhere’ sort of those being Aboriginal people and 35% non-Aboriginal people. person, and that’s gone through my entire family as far as I can Addressing Aboriginal health needs is a lot different from your remember. What drives me is that I want the toil and hard work standard General Practice because it’s not just the my parents and grandparents and great-grandparents physical and emotional wellbeing, but all elements went through to allow me, and those after me, to have of healthcare which includes social, spiritual and a better way of life. I want to see this organisation last cultural wellbeing of the whole community. We longer than my lifetime, and what we’ve done to anBdehind fairl a ca apply that philosophy to all people, whether they improve and change it for the better to continue and dem y Jam eanoseriolm be Aboriginal, non-Aboriginal, Sudanese, people evolve from there. All Aboriginal Medical Services u true ie ha ur, s pass s a from all different ethnic backgrounds come here in Australia will have intervention and prevention ion because of the range of services we provide.” programs, education and awareness programs to keep our people well. If we can empower people, not DOES OAMS PROVIDE OTHER SERVICES just Aboriginal people but people of all backgrounds, to be ASIDE FROM HEALTHCARE? responsible for themselves, then they can sow that message “We bring a lot of medical students through OAMS. We’re into their children, and then their children, and it will lead partnered with four universities in Orange, Sydney and generational change.” Wollongong and all sorts of medical students will often come Behind a calm and fairly serious demeanour, Jamie has a and study through us so we’re not just a healthcare provider, we true passion for what he considers not just his work, but his train people. We try to expose people to Aboriginal health in a responsibility to his family, friends and the community to ‘modern, average city’ sort of context, not the ‘remote village do something that is creative and influences change. It’s a in the middle of the outback’ context, which is critical, because combination of the traditional indigenous ideology of family and a lot of students will have been trained in the bigger centres or community first, and instilling a sense of pride and self-worth in the city and think that Aboriginal health is the same all across into not just Aboriginal people, but everyone in their local town the country when that’s not the case. We want those who study or city. Never have I met someone who has been this dedicated under us to be flexible and innovative when it comes to helping to helping their fellow man in one of the most remarkable and people.” compassionate ways. Hey, its Rose here, having choice is a right of everyone, what I want to talk about today is getting you the best choices for your personal situation. If you go to the local bakery, you know you are going to have a decent range of choices, because everyone’s tastes are different. So, if you went to a business and they only had one option, would you see that as fair? Unfortunately, many people do that with their finances, they go to the same financial institution and get whatever product is offered and assume that it’s right for them. Sometimes, financial institutions assume that they can offer one solution to a large group of people without realising we are all individuals.
If you are ever told by a financial institution that you must use a third party they prefer, that is prohibited. It even has a name – Third Line Forcing, the ACCC states that, ‘Third Line Forcing occurs when a business will only supply goods or services, or give a particular price or discount on the condition that the purchaser buys goods or services from a particular third party. If the buyer refuses to comply with this condition, the business will refuse to supply them with goods or services. ‘In contrast to other types of exclusive dealing, third line forcing is prohibited no matter what its effect on competition’. So, if your financial institution tries this on you, remember it is not only unfair, but not legal.

What’s the difference between a bird and a fly? A bird can fly but a fly can’t bird. What do we call a crying sister? A crisis. Have you got some terribly awesome/awesomely terrible jokes that you think people should hear? send them in to reception@oclife.com.au
Choice is what you are entitled to and what we all deserve, so seeking non-biased advice for your personal finances will not only provide you with choice, but will ensure you have a broader range that can be tailored to you and your needs. There are so many ways to obtain the right financial options for you, your business and your family’s needs, by seeking unbiased professionals who have products to cater for different individuals. If you have ever been declined for a financial product or heard the words ‘you don’t meet our criteria’, maybe that is because that financial institution has a limited view of their customers. That’s why having multiple providers in the one spot, that can be tailored to you can mean
greater success for your financial needs. From our own standpoint, Charley and I can choose from over a dozen insurers, hundreds of investments and Charley can choose from around thirty lenders. Make sure you ask your financial institution if they too can offer such choice. If they cannot, ask why? If you are not happy with the choices you are being offered, you can choose what is right for you, never let anyone tell you that ‘near enough is good enough’ or you have no options.
See you soon Rose

JAM ORANGE’S OPEN MIC NIGHT
COMING SOON CREEDENCE AND FRIENDS TRIBUTE For fans of Creedence Clearwater Revival, this will be a musical adventure paying homage to the sights and sounds of this legendary brand. The Creedence and Friends tribute will take you on a journey, covering the musical career of front man, John Fogerty, including his solo career. For lovers 60s and 70s American country rock music, this show is one not to be missed. The performance takes place on 28 July at Orange Ex Services Club and includes a two-course dinner, with doors opening at 7pm.
JAM Orange’s Open Mic Nights are a fantastic platform for our local music community, established by musos who are passionate about local talent. JAM Orange (Inc) will present another of their popular Open Mic Nights on Tuesday 11 July at the Victoria Hotel. If you are a musician, poet or comedian and would like to perform, get to the Victoria Hotel early and put your name on the board to claim your 15minute spot. Get in early as the board fills up fast! Last month’s Open Mike Night included duo The Pretty Scoundrels (pictured), featuring Hannah Wisse & Blair Fuller, two brilliant young musicians who always entertain. You don’t need to be a performer to get involved – these nights are a great opportunity for lovers of live music to come and enjoy our local talent. Entry is by gold coin donation and the performances commence at 7.30pm.
U2: NO ORDINARY TRIBUTE Achtung Baby is no ordinary U2 tribute show. Sure, the singer looks exactly like Bono, but that’s just the start. Unlike other U2 cover bands, he actually sounds like Bono too, and audiences are delighted by the way he charismatically owns the stage. His powerful vocal range and subtle nuances reflect Bono’s unique style to perfection and sometimes it’s hard to remember that Achtung Baby are not the real thing. The performance takes place on 25 August at Orange Ex Services Club and includes a two-course dinner, with doors opening at 7pm.

demeanour, but beneath her jocular exterior resides the contemplative Jane. “Growing up was a wrench for me— to have to let go of my youthful world fired by my imagination and need for excitement,” Jane said. Her work “Cluckerbell” (pictured) started with a steel cap from a steel cap boot which she found in Summer Street, which is now the nose of the cow. The work took her 7 months to complete. While Jane’s creative works can certainly be enjoyed on a superficial level, delving deeper exposes a rich tapestry woven from her personal experiential narrative and childhood experiences. Jane’s exhibition ‘In dog years I’m Dead’ will feature twenty of her unique sculptures. It opens on Saturday 8 July at 2pm at the Orange Regional Gallery and will run until 20 August.

TOP TIPS FOR COSY OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING THIS WINTER With some smart outdoor heating and clever backyard styling, you can enjoy fantastic outdoor entertaining in comfort and style all year round. Here, Chris Florac, outdoor heating specialist and product manager for leading heating range, Décofire, shares his top tips for cosy outdoor entertaining this winter.
MAXIMISING SALE PRICE: IS IT ALL IN THE RENNOS? AUSSIES SAY COSMETIC RENOVATIONS ARE THE NUMBER ONE FACTOR THAT ACHIEVES THE BEST PRICE FOR A PROPERTY New research reveals that most property owners do not believe that selling during the peak of the property cycle achieves the best sales price for a property. Rather, it’s cosmetic renovations that achieve the best sales price. The findings come from a survey of a nationally representative panel of 1000 Australian adults commissioned by localagentfinder.com.au – a platform that enables vendors to compare real estate agents side by side based on performance history, sales and independent feedback – he study was produced in conjunction with Pureprofile, a data and insights company. Cosmetic renovations were the leading factor chosen by one in three Aussies, with just a quarter believing the key to achieving the best price is to sell during the peak of the property cycle. The skills of the selling agent ranked third, while vendors agreed marketing strategy ranked fourth among respondents. Matt McCann, CEO of LocalAgentFinder, said: “In last year’s market, even the ‘renovate or detonate’ properties were fetching top dollar, but as the market continues to transition, we will see that properties with a modern update or those that have been given some TLC will sell well. The fact that homeowners believe cosmetic renovations to be the top determinant in achieving the best sale price shows they believe buyers are looking for ‘move-in ready’ homes. In saying 44
DATE, 2017
that, it’s also important vendors don’t overcapitalise on their renovations.” The study found that factors such as ‘staging’ (interior furnishings) and choosing the right reserve price were less of a concern to property owners, each chosen by only seven per cent of respondents. The findings come as new underquoting laws on the sale of residential property in NSW came into effect from 1 January last year. “Choosing the right reserve may have ranked as a low concern because vendors select an agent based on a variety of factors, with one of these factors based on the agent’s knowledge of the market. Vendors trust the agent they choose to sell their property, and that extends to the trust they have in their agent’s ability in helping them set the right reserve – the right reserve being the best price for the property, but also a realistic price,” says Matt. Opinions aside, the best course of action in determining how to maximise the sale price for a property is always to speak to a trusted real estate agent. Matt said: “An agent can guide you on the right time to sell in your area as well as advise you on the right price, a great agent will know the local area and what sellers are looking for, including how much a renovation will add to the value of your property and the features buyers are looking for.”
1. Go Naked – without doubt, there’s nothing that warms your hands or your heart more on a winter’s day, than the inviting glow of a dancing naked flame. A real fire creates an eye-catching centrepiece for any outdoor space and provides a focal point around which to gather with family and friends when entertaining outdoors. A modern fire pit is a great outdoor heating solution, providing warmth combined with ambient style. 2. Fire Style – when it comes to choosing a fire pit, consider the amount of space you have available. If you have a generous backyard and you are a regular outdoor entertainer, then opt for a good sized fire pit with a generously sized fire bowl. This will provide a bigger heat out-put over a wider distance and a longer burning time without the need to keep re-fuelling. If, however, you have a small backyard, then it pays to go up in height, so opt for a vertical or cylindrical design style that will heat your area without taking up precious floor space. 3. Comfort Zone - unlike in summer where the barbecue can often take centre stage, in winter, it’s time for your fire pit to shine. The right design can be a beautiful focal point if your outdoor space is lacking that something special. When entertaining, arrange seating around the fire pit so everyone enjoys the warmth and entrancing flicker of the flames 4. Rug up – create a warm welcome for guests by providing blankets and throws for them to snuggle up under. Choose rich colours – think shades of orange, burnt amber and flames of red. Add co-ordinated cushions in sumptuous textures and luxurious weaves to complete your comfort zone. 5. Light the Way – set the mood for your winter soirée with pretty table lights, stylish hanging lamps and scented outdoor candles. Weave a string of paper lanterns through a tree or around a post or pillar to create a magical outdoor setting that will enchant your family and friends to create happy memories for many years to come.
