FINANCE WORDS BY DANIEL McGREGOR

A CREEP HAS BEEN SHADOWING YOU FOR YEARS

You probably haven’t noticed, but for most of your working life there’s been a creep silently stalking you... Lifestyle creep!

JUNE 1–7, 2017

nvestopedia defines lifestyle creep as a situation where people’s lifestyle or standard of living improves as their discretionary income rises, either through an increase in income or decrease in costs. As lifestyle creep occurs and more money is spent on lifestyle, former luxuries are now considered necessities. In general, most people tend to increase their standard of living as their income rises. If the increase in lifestyle expense is equal to the increase in income, then nothing additional (or maybe nothing at all) is being saved to put towards the future. It’s the little voice in our heads that causes the problems… “I just got a pay rise so I can afford the coffee and muffin each work day”, “I’m earning more so we should get a better house”, “I can afford a nicer car now with my higher income”. Don’t try and keep up with Joneses. They’re broke! Instead, put in place the one rule that could change your financial future dramatically: PAY YOURSELF FIRST If you can follow this one simple rule it will guarantee that you have money to invest. If you have a little money to invest, with time you can create wealth. If you can create wealth, you can create a way of replacing your income from work and the sooner you can do that, the sooner you can retire. Paying yourself first simply means taking something from each pay, on the day you get paid, and putting it somewhere for the future. That is, it’s money you make unavailable to spend now, instead locking it away for the benefit of your future self. In an ideal world, we’d all save 10% of our income for the future. However, if lifestyle creep has got you a little pinned down from years of abuse then one way to start paying yourself first is to use your next

pay rise to kick-start things. The next time your pay goes up, check the difference between pays and then religiously start saving the difference. You might be surprised to find you don’t miss the extra money (you were living without it before the pay rise anyway) and all of a sudden you are saving and the process has begun. And then look at what time does if you can manage to save and invest $200 a month: Saving $200 a month at age…

Killing Each Other with Kindness

‘Out of your vulnerabilities will come your strength’ – Sigmund Freud

What are the two major mistakes couples make and how to fix or avoid these issues in relationship.

T

he first and possibly the biggest mistake that I see in virtually every couple I work with is that they’re killing each other with kindness! Couples invariably make the mistake of shutting down their communication for fear of saying something that may hurt the other’s feelings. Rather than say something potentially hurtful, many couples opt for saying nothing at all. While ‘keeping the peace’ seems like a reasonable strategy in the short term, the consequence of silence is emotional distance and it is this

emotional distance that over time, erodes intimacy. The second major mistake couples make is taking on a ‘we’ identity and leaving ‘I’ in the dust! Again, in the short term this sense of ‘us’ and ‘we’ feels good. We feel close. But the cost of ‘we’ is the loss of ‘I’. For a time, we’re all happy to prioritize our relationship but as time passes and life pressures mount, many individuals begin to feel swallowed up by the relationship. The partner, who was once so accepting now seems demanding and full of expectations and in that ‘we’ there is no longer

any room to be their own person —their own self. The resentment couples begin to feel for this loss of self will often permeate every area of their relationship until even the very core —the love they have for their partner —can feel called into question. The future of their relationship feels uncertain and suddenly, ‘it’s complicated’. It’s important to remember that both of the mistakes outlined above germinate in love. A desire to please rather than hurt our partner and a desire to feel close with the special sense of connection to another that it seems only ‘we’ can bring. The

way to bridge emotional distance is through truth. Being prepared to risk hurting the feelings of the one we love for an intimacy that is stronger than temporary tears. Speaking our truth also happens to be the way we bring ‘I’ back into our relationship. And a relationship between two individuals rather than a resentful ‘we’ develops a foundation of genuine connection that can withstand the strongest storms. It’s funny how it works like that.

isney’s High School Musical, performed by Orange Christian School, focuses on the blossoming relationship between Troy, a high school jock, and Gabriella, the new smart girl at school. They meet on a family vacation and become attracted to each other while singing in a karaoke competition. Finally, Gabriella and Troy find a way to be themselves and are rewarded with the lead roles in the school show. Full of catchy songs and exciting dance routines, Disney’s High School Musical explores issues of friendship, first love, and acceptance. Two performances take place on Friday 9 June and Saturday 10 June at Orange Civic Theatre.

major concert appearance for OMVC’s treasured accompanist of 28 years, Beverley Glover, who is returning soon to her native New Zealand. Beverly said “I’ve taken so much joy and pleasure from working and playing with 5 different conductors over the last 28 years. I’m going to miss everyone dreadfully. We just won first prize in the open choral section of the Cowra Eisteddfod, so it’s lovely to go away on a win!” ‘Friendship in Song’ will be performed at St. Mary’s Church, Park Street, Orange, Saturday 17 June, 7.30 pm. Tickets are available at Collins Bookstore, $25 (concession $20). A great occasion is guaranteed.
