Here’s a heads up… If you purchased one of our Colour City Window Hangers over the last year or two and hung it in the rear window of your car, good on you! That means you’ve been flying flag for Orange, albeit in a small way, wherever your car has been during that time. You’ve also had the chance to win $50 or more each week from OC Life in our Window Hanger Competition, and a lot of people have won over those years. Well, all good things must come to an end and this week is your last chance to win in that competition. That’s bad news, the good news is we’re replacing it with a new competition from next week called ‘Random Number Plates’. It’s pretty similar and still with $50 a week up for grabs but to win in this one, you only need to have a vehicle with a number plate to be eligible. This town of ours never stops and March it seems, will be busier than ever! Crafted, The Orange Elephant Ball, John Crasti’s Ute Show and the Newcrest Cycle Challenge all fall on the same weekend and will certainly keep OC Life’s photographers busy… Some other big March events to keep in mind include: the Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience, the NSW Triathlon Club Championships and the Glow Hard Fun Run. Then, towards the end of the month, the Great Volcanic Mountain Challenge and F.O.O.D week. It’s going to be a busy month! I’d love some feedback… Here at OCL we’ve been TRYING to get our NBN and phones up to speed (there’s the optimal word…) with the latest technology. To say it’s been frustrating is an understatement and frankly, the Government needs a rocket you know where for their false ‘Make the switch’ advertising campaigns —it simply isn’t that easy. On top of that, the outrageous and far differing quotes we’ve received were mind blowing. Are we the only ones going through this? I wouldn’t think so. company is hitting us with a charge for NOT paying the bill via direct debit. We’re not late on the payment, matter of fact, we’re normally quite prompt but they now want to fine us for not paying their preferred way. Needless to say, we’ve told them to shove it and will be finding another provider but how long has this rort been going on? If we pay our bill via B-pay, we get charged for a ‘processing fee’ AND we get charged for not paying via Direct Debit… and the Government wonders why small businesses are closing at an alarming rate! Speaking of small businesses shutting down, is anyone becoming concerned with the empty spaces around town lately? How nice it would be if we could find a way to fill those empty shops. The team is made up of Kate, her children and their friends. “Last year the local businesses and members of the Orange community were very supportive of the Dunny Dump, assisting us in raising just under $2000 for our team with the Dunny Dump alone. I decided to take it on for another year to see if we can beat our 2016 fundraising total,” said Mrs Ziegler In 2016, the brightly coloured dunny was delivered to a number of local businesses around Orange requesting that they follow a few simple rules of the ‘Dunny Dump’: • A business owner or resident can have it sent to another business or friend’s lawn, all for the cost of a $40 donation to ‘JSCHS Friends 4 Life’ team page. • If a person wants it gone, they donate $40 to have it removed 4

and have it sent to another friend. • A $50 donation, or ‘Flushin Insurance’, makes sure that the dunny won’t be ‘dumped’ with you. If you are proud of the fact that you have been nominated for the ‘Dunny Dump’ you can leave it for three days at no cost to you. “Last year, we had a great time surprising business owners when informing them that they had been ‘Dumped’. We were presented with quite a few puzzled faces and quizzical looks when delivering the dunny around town. This year, I am excited to have the support of the JSCHS executive, and to have the kids involved with the Orange and District Relay For Life 15th Anniversary celebrations. The 2017 Relay For Life is shaping up to be a lot of fun for the whole Orange community.” Chair of the Orange and District Relay For Life 2017 committee Terry Betts said “The dunny was donated last year by Tate’s Plumbing and the stickers forming the artistic covering are

The dump has been quite successful the past two years and is back for another run this year.” The ‘dumped’ business or household will receive a letter along with the dunny which explains the rules or aptly named “plumbing policies.” Mrs Ziegler is very passionate about fundraising for the Cancer Council as cancer has personally touched the lives of some of her family members. “Both my parents are cancer survivors, so I am proud of the fact that every dollar we raise contributes to the treatment, education, prevention and ultimately one day, finding a cure for cancer. As long as people continue to support us.” Mrs Ziegler said that she will continue the fundraiser until the team participates in the Orange & District Relay for Life 2017, which is scheduled to be held on the weekend of 1-2 April 2017 at the Waratah Sports Ground. HOW CAN WE MAKE IT STOP?

“I am from a really small town in Southern Alberta, Canada, it is freezing in the winter and quite beautiful in the Summer. When I was 18 I just got bored of living there, there are only around 3500 people living there, and I just had my three brothers and a few friends so I just wanted to experience something else. “I managed to get a job as

an AU PAIR here in Australia, for two separate families which was really fun. I needed more interaction with people my own age, so I got the job at Coco’s, I met so many people working here including my partner. I travelled to Queensland and Melbourne, it’s been really good actually, and now I am leaving in a week! It has gone by so quickly.

“Everyone here is so friendly and they are so excited when they meet someone who is not from Orange or not from Australia which was so nice, because its scary being here by yourself so young. I have made such a great group of friends. “My favourite Aussie saying would have to be “G’day mate how ya goin?”

want it to stop, truly I do. I’d be more than happy if I never again had to read about the death of ANYONE by their own hand. But that’s not going to happen. We are losing far too many fine young men—and women—at an ever-increasing rate and frankly, it scares the absolute sh*t out of me. What state of mind these poor buggers must find themselves in to finally, fatally do the deed. And that deed itself leaves a gaping wound for us all to fill. It’s a tragedy that does not end at that final act. Suicide has become— unnervingly —more common than knowing someone who has died of cancer. As a society, what more can we do? I’m at a loss. I tell, no, PLEAD, with any one of my friends or associates that may be suffering with depression of any level to talk to me, at any time of the day or night and I’m certain that everyone has made that same plea… We’re here, always. And I hope with all my power that that alone is having an effect – and I suppose it is - but I’m just not convinced. So, what more can we do? There is still a stigma attached but only by the very ignorant, surely? Simply asking someone to ‘Talk’, in my opinion, isn’t working; not as well as we’d like. There are more Mental Health facilities and services available to us as a society than ever before and STILL the numbers rise. Workplaces are trained to recognise and act — and still the numbers go up. And here’s something else to consider; 15 per cent of diagnosed bipolar disorder patients commit suicide. This means that being diagnosed and medicated does not stop the risk of individuals taking their life. As a forty something blokey bloke, the societal changes pushed upon us are great. I am still of the generation that doesn’t talk—

even though I personally do. Both my Grandfathers were the silent brooding type, never giving too much away. Dad and uncles much the same. It is just how things were done. But it is changing. I openly encourage my little fella to talk to me about his frustrations; he’s a sensitive little boy and can let the oddest (in my opinion) things upset him for no apparent reason. I don’t recall, as a boy of ten, acting or behaving that way. Sure, I recall WANTING to scream and say it isn’t fair, but that would have just brought about a clip under the ear so I’d just bite my tongue and move on. Essentially, I COPED with disappointment. I learned NOT to let that sort of thing upset or annoy me again as it was, bluntly, pointless! Of course, my world back then and the one we live in now are vastly different; we were EXPECTED to cope and, as that was the only choice we had, we did. Did it leave a scar? Perhaps, I’ve never given it a lot of thought but I know that it’s NOT how I want to raise my kids. I want an open dialogue, just because I don’t ‘get’ or understand my children’s frustrations, doesn’t mean I wont try. What has changed so very much that young people are finding themselves so dark that suicide is the only all-consuming thought they can muster? I truly want to know because SOMETHING is responsible for this change, something has happened. The numbers of people suffering through depression and anxiety is alarming, don’t you agree? Is it our food? Is it our sedentary lifestyles? Is it the rise of social media – that thing that is great but also so very bad for us? I want to know. I want an answer. I am scared of losing another. CLEANING UP THE MOUNT A small but determined group of volunteers met on Sunday the 19th February to start the slow process of removing the Ivy from Mount Canobolas. This was the first time the group had come together and they hope that through more public knowledge, the volunteer numbers can grow so the cleaning up can occur on a monthly basis. Wild & Precious Life A PAUSE AMONGST THE LIVES OF TWO BUSY MUMS Last week, the Corner Store Gallery played host to Photographers Emily Ellis, Helen Whittle as they launched their exhibition —‘Wild and Precious Life’.

Wild and Precious Life is a musing on the wonder and love of simple, everyday moments around us. Despite Helen being a predominately black and white portrait artist and Emily capturing mostly nature, outside in colour, the photographers have much in common: an all-consuming love for their children and their desire to capture and treasure everything precious about their fleeting childhoods. A fantastic turn out—making it quite hard to walk around and photograph—a great sign for Helen and Emily and an indication of people’s respect for the two. Helen said, “It was overwhelming and exciting to have so many people come and

support us.” Helen was recently awarded with ‘Australian Photographer of the Year’. “I entered the competition for Australian Photographer of the year 2016 in Australian Photography Magazine with a portfolio of four black and white photos of my sevenyear-old daughter Minnie, in each image, using complete natural light. “I’m honoured, delighted and humbled to win the award, it means so much to me to be judged and recognised by professional photographers.” The exhibition will be on show until March 5th. by BOB HOLLAND I’ve always been pretty passionate about trying to help small business owners grow their businesses, and particularly in any area to do with marketing. It’s for that reason that an opportunity Council is giving local businesses next week impresses me. They’re putting on what they’re calling a Retail Revamp Visual Merchandising Workshop as part of Back to Business Week. As a marketing consultant, I’m even going to this one myself because I feel, unlike many such workshops, this one sounds like it has some very practical and relevant aspects to it. I’m confident I’ll learn something useful. First point to note is that attendance is FREE! Next point is that it’s for just 2 hours in the morning which will enable many small business owners to get 8

his is the first year the fundraising has been in place for Food Care and both parties are hopeful the relationship continues. Housing Plus Chief Executive Officer David Fisher said, “The staff at Housing Plus have a monthly staff barbeque and everyone donates $10. Every day we have drinks for sale - water, coke - the lot. The money we raise is then given to Food Care each year.” Housing Plus Bookkeeper Kim Goldsmith added, “We would like to encourage other local organisations to do the same or think about ways they can help the community.” Food Care Coordinator, Anne Hopwood said, “We are so grateful for everything Housing Plus is doing for us, this will go a long way to helping us provide more for our customers.” Housing Plus is a community anchor that breaks the cycle of disadvantage across Western NSW. Their services include providing housing for individuals and their family on low to moderate incomes that is safe, affordable and appropriate for individual needs. They also provide homelessness services that empower individuals who are experiencing, or are at risk of homelessness, to achieve sustainable housing, and Domestic Violence Services that support women experiencing domestic violence to be safe and empower them to escape domestic violence.

range-based Andrew “Pricey” Price is accelerating his fitness program in readiness for this year’s Ride for Country Kids, a challenging event which supports Royal Far West to deliver services to address the health and wellbeing of country children. Andrew and fellow competitor Con Hart, of FDC Construction and Fitout, were instrumental in forming this iconic cycling event. Andrew said: “I was managing a

law firm in Sydney and met Con when FDC Construction undertook a fitout project for the firm. Con and I decided we wanted to start a charity event, and we thought a three-day cycle through regional areas of NSW was a perfect fit with Royal Far West, which has been providing health and developmental services for children and communities in rural and remote areas for more than 90 years.” A fabulous success, the Ride

has grown from 22 riders in 2013 to more than 100 riders, with fundraising growing from $130,000 to this year’s target of $800,000. “The riders come from a variety of backgrounds, and all make a huge effort to raise funds,” Andrew explained. “A highlight of each Ride is stopping at schools along the way to see how the funds raised for Royal Far West have made an impact on the children and their communities. It was fantastic! “I now live in Orange, and this gives me a greater sense and appreciation of what Royal Far West does. The Event goes far beyond just cycling – it’s an ideal way for riders from the corporate world to connect with children and locals in the

communities we cycle through. We gain an insight into the trust many rural people have for Royal Far West, and the reciprocal respect Royal Far West has for them.” This year’s Ride for Country Kids starts in Wagga Wagga on Sunday 12 March and finishes in Orange on Tuesday 14 March 2017. It’s a wonderful event that raises funds and awareness of Royal Far West’s impact on country kids and communities.

Palliative care staff shortage CAMPAIGN URGES GOVERNMENT TO TAKE ACTION

range is taking action to end the shortage of specialist palliative care services with over 200 locals signing a pledge in support of Cancer Council NSW’s I Care for Palliative Care campaign at the recent launch of the campaign on Monday. Currently, there are not enough palliative care doctors and nurses to meet the needs of the Orange community. The issue extends state-wide with NSW needing a minimum of 10 more full time palliative care physicians, to be brought in line with national palliative care recommendations. ver the years, I’ve come to realise that honesty is kinda overrated. While it’s great to tell the truth, some truths just don’t need to be said - especially when the truth will serve no purpose but hurting someone else. You’ve been there too, right? When it comes to a smackdown between honesty and kindness, the latter wins every time. The importance of kindness over honesty is beautifully exemplified in a personal story written by Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Pray Love and the more recent Big Magic. She describes her encounters with a very “honest” friend. It not only points out that kindness trumps honesty, but the unlikely places maliciousness can hide. The story is too long to include in full, but an excerpt is below: Twenty years ago, a friend and I were having dinner at a Mexican restaurant when she suddenly asked me, “Liz, can I be brutally honest with you about something?” Here’s how dumb I was back in my 20s: I actually said, “Yes! Of course!” At which point my friend took a shiv out of her purse and expertly slid it right between my ribs. Okay, to be fair, she didn’t literally stab me. She merely told me that I was selfish and lazy, and also that I would probably never be able to make a living as a writer, and moreover that nobody liked my boyfriend. Oh yeah, one last thing: My hair didn’t look very good. My jaw is too big to carry off a pixie cut, apparently. Makes my face look all weird and out of balance. As I sat there gasping for oxygen over my half-eaten fajitas and trying to stem my internal emotional bleeding, my friend reached across the table and pushed aside the salsa so she could place her hand on mine for emphasis. “I’m the only person who cares about you enough to tell you the truth,” she said. “That’s why it’s important that you keep me around. Everybody else just blows smoke up your ass.”

Here’s another example of how dumb I was in my 20s: I actually believed her. Thus, I kept this friend in my life for another five years. Whenever I faced a difficult decision or needed an opinion on a sensitive issue, I would return to her and ask once more for the brutal truth—which she would happily deliver, smiling with pleasure as she donned her executioner’s mask and got busy hacking me up. Why did I keep going back for more abuse? Because I figured her honesty was keeping me honest—when in fact it was just keeping me injured. Interestingly enough, it was the progress I was making in my professional life (the one she thought I’d never have) that ultimately taught me how injurious these criticisms really were. See, despite my friend’s prediction, I did eventually start making a living as a writer. Putting my work into the world meant I had to learn how to take criticism. But I slowly realized that I didn’t have to take it from everybody. Liz decided to start only taking advice from people who met four criteria: she trusted their judgement; they understood what she was trying to create; they genuinely wanted her to succeed; and most importantly, they were capable of delivering the truth in a sensitive and compassionate manner, because “the truth delivered without a dose of kindness was of no help to my work.” She continues: Best of all, I eventually learned that I could apply these four questions to the critics in my personal life as well. If I’m going to open myself to you, then I need to know that I can trust you, and that you understand me, and that you genuinely want me to succeed, and—most of all—that you are capable of being compassionate with your honesty. When I began surrounding myself with people like this, I was able to start coaxing my life in a better direction and creating a more wonderful story about my own existence. Which meant that finally a day came when my old shiv-carrying friend asked me, “Can I be brutally honest with you?” and I told her my own truth: “Oh, hell no.” Don’t worry, I said it with more kindness than that. Because that’s the only way it works.

The Horror Movie is back It’s my weakness—but my tolerance for reporting the behaviour of some ‘famous’ people has overflowed.

used to love watching the news. I pride myself on staying up-to-date with current affair s, politics, world events, current sport, music, the arts and of course, what Prince Harry is up to. But the last few years have seen the ‘style’ of news we get to watch, at least on the commercial channels, change – if it’s not ‘sensational’, then evidently it’s not newsworthy. Whilst I can’t speak for others, surely the average Joe must be a bit full to the brim with ridiculous stories of so called newsworthy people, where the news being reported has nothing to do with their areas of expertise or their chosen field. Obviously, the biggest example on the Horror Movie** every night are the pollies. If they were hell-bent on running the country, the state or their electorate then I’d be a happy camper. But it seems like every time they’re featured on the news it’s because of party defections, in-fighting, the obsession with staying in power, scandals like rorting travel benefits or just calling each other childish names during parliamentary sessions; gee they must have a lot of time on their hands. It might be worth it to just pay the fine for not voting next time, nobody really deserves my vote. You’ll hear me screaming from anywhere the next time the news features a ‘famous’ sports star caught up in their latest scandal. That’s NOT news. From our modern tennis players breaking racquets and having hissy-fits because of how hardly done by they are, through to the retired sportsmen

still craving their share of fame and the camera, and those going off the rails with booze, gambling, affairs and shady characters. I am not interested. That doesn’t mean I don’t feel for you if you are having hard times —we all have those, don’t we? If you are famous sporting type—dazzle me with your performances and I’m all ears. To the networks—how about reporting on some of the awesome charity work or community service done by the good people in sport? If you ignored the tantrums/scandals, many of the clowns on our screens would fffffade away (as Roger Daltry said). The straw that broke this camel’s back was the ‘Jacket-gate’ story a few weeks back. One famous (I use the word loosely) newsreader chucked a tanty because the other reporter had a jacket on just like hers. Except for the network where the tantrum played out, this pathetic piece of ‘news’ was used by every other network (and online place) in the country to snigger at the goings on. Sure, the newsreaders’ outburst was ridiculous, but all the other networks are just as bad. Shame on you all. As for using your half-hour news programs to shamelessly or subliminally crosspromote other TV shows on your network, pathetic doesn’t even come close to the word I should use. That show on the WIN network, The Project, has started featuring a ‘good news only’ section a couple of times a week, where they only show stories that bring a tear to your eye because of the happy times contained inside it. Here’s my ideal world—the nightly news opens with exactly that, the News. The sad and yukky stuff still gets a run, but facts only please, and no scandals. Then, it’s followed by 10 minutes of good news stories from local and the world. Then the real sport (outrage free), tomorrow’s temperature and were done. ** If 70s band Skyhooks were around today, they’d have to write a new version of their hit Horror Movie, about the 6:30 news.

A NEW APPROACH TO CYBERBULLYING A new online innovation created in Australia is helping protect thousands of young people from becoming victims of cyberbullying.

he internet has become an essential part of the lives of young people in Australia, with most going online to learn, keep in touch with friends and have fun. Unfortunately, the increase in internet use has led to an increase in electronic communication to bully a person, by use of intimidating or threatening language, known as “cyberbullying”. Online tool Reword was launched last year and works by identifying cruel or intimidating language in real time, prompting users to reconsider their potentially hurtful message or social media post before hitting send. The tool works in a similar way to grammar check programs, with a red line appearing through inflammatory words to highlight

bullying behaviour, encouraging online users to reconsider their choice of words. A joint initiative between Headspace, the National Youth Mental Health Foundation, and communications agency Leo Burnett Melbourne, the tool was created as a way to curb the more than 463,000 instances of cyberbullying amongst young Australians every year. Reword’s success has garnered overwhelming results, with over 700,000 downloads of the tool since its launch in March 2016. Six weeks after launch, data from Headspace’s Youth Reference Research showed that young people responded to the red line, rephrasing 87 per cent of their messages. Vikki Ryall, Head of Clinical Practice at Headspace, said: “Young people can act impulsively, not realising the

effect their actions or words can have. One of the last aspects of neurological development is the ability to moderate actions according to potential consequences, so this type of behaviour is not uncommon. Reword’s success comes from asking young people to stop and think before acting.” Currently, the tool is only available as a Google Chrome extension, so now the creators are calling on the public to support a crowdfunding campaign to create a mobile version of the tool. In turn, the app will support the 96 per cent of young people who access social media on their mobile devices. “In the last year, we’ve had such a positive response to Reword, and we’ve seen how it is possible to impact and stop negative online behaviour in real time. With most young people owning mobile devices, there is a clear demand for a mobile version”, notes Ms Ryall. Kate said, “The group were really

interactive, and we had a lot of fun. Banjo Paterson Festival Food & Wine Night Markets Crowds flocked to Robertson Park last Friday night to take in all the fare of the annual Banjo Patterson Festival Night Markets and OC Life’s Cec Tilburg went along to capture some of the action. Culminating this Sunday, the Festival celebrates all things Banjo to honour his birthday, February 17. The Festival comprises five signature events – the Rotary Brekky & Poetry in the Park; Banjo’s Birthday Breakfast; the Night Markets; the Emmaville Cottage Family Market Day featuring artisanal local craft and produce; and the Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Competition. Sport is something that throughout time, has provided us with stories and happenings that stir our emotions or at the very least, warm our heart.

he story I’m about to tell you isn’t one that will go down in history or make the headlines of major news broadcasts but it does have a bit of a fairy tale ring to it. It’s about a racehorse from way out in no man’s land, up near the Queensland border. Last Saturday, this horse won a race at Dubbo which qualified it to run in a much bigger race at Randwick in Sydney in a few weeks’ time. The circumstances of last week’s win make it a feel-good yarn and I thought I’d share it with you in “Good Vibrations”. The horse is named Stoneyrise. It’s owned and trained by a fellow named James Hatch who lives at Hungerford near the Queensland border and really is a long way from nowhere. He trains two horses out there and Stoneyrise is one of them. He also uses his race horses to round up cattle! Interestingly, James has only been to the races in Sydney once in his

life. Clearly, he is a ‘bushy’ of the highest order, yet despite this, in a few weeks’ time, he and his horse will travel to what is called Royal Randwick, to mix it with the best from the country in a $400,000 race. Should he win, it will be one of the best horse racing fairy tales since another bush horse “Takeover Target” burst onto the scene with a special performance in a big race at Grafton many years ago Takeover Target went on to win millions of dollars after winning big races both here and overseas. Stoneyrise is a long way from that, but there are some indications that a possible fairy tale is not totally out of the question. Without going into the full details of the circumstances of his win last week, let me just touch on some of the more unusual aspects. Before last week, Stoneyrise had won five races on outback tracks and had earned prizemoney of less than

$40,000. By the way, he was originally bought at a sale in Dubbo for $7,500, a very small amount for a racehorse. The quality of the races he had won were hardly anything to write home about, although his previous win at Coonamble indicated he had ability, enough it seems, for his trainer to consider entering him in the $150,000 qualifying race at Dubbo last week, and would you believe first up after a spell and over a distance that he had never raced over. If that wasn’t enough, he also drew barrier 17, which racing experts often describe as being drawn in the carpark. Generally speaking, few horses win races from barriers that far from the running rail. Nonetheless, Stoneyrise did! But there’s more… One report said the horse is quite small by racehorse standards, another handicap for sure. Then when the horses jumped, Stoneyrise was a bit slow to get going, then had to

race wide and near the back of the big field for the early stages of the race. When a horse has to do this, there’s usually not much left in the tank when the pressure goes on at the end of the race. Well, according to the report, Stoneyrise, after all that and with no right to do so, stormed home from second last in the long Dubbo straight to run down the hot favourite and win clearly by a length. And if all that isn’t spectacular enough, the jockey was also an apprentice, which simply adds more merit to the performance. Stories like this are rare in horse racing, they do after all, call it the sport of kings for good reason, but they do happen and Stoneyrise’s story is not over yet. Should he happen to win at Randwick in a few weeks’ time, I’m sure he’ll make news in much bigger media than OC Life. Good luck James, and go Stoneyrise, we know you’ll do the bush proud!

hile it’s widely known that small business is the backbone of the Australian economy, cash flow issues and the red tape involved can make small business a very high-risk venture. 2017 is expected to be a year of deliverables for small business and it is important that governments do not lose sight of the sector’s priorities, which would risk undermining future economic growth and prosperity, according to Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO) Kate Carnell. “Whether it be small business tax cuts, competition reform, unfair

contracts, government procurement or security of payments, governments—and oppositions —have indicated their support for small business, but now we need the rubber to really hit the road; for these measures to be up-and-running and to be proven solutions to a range of small business road-blocks,” Ms Carnell said. “There are a lot of diverse interests competing for governments’ attention, but the one sector that sits across most—if not all policy areas —is small business, so governments at federal, state and local level must keep the sustainability and growth of this sector at the top of their

agenda, if they’re to keep the broader economy growing. “There are more than two million small businesses in Australia, employing close to four million people across the country. Unlike large businesses, the tax revenue generated by our [small businesses enterprises] is on the rise, so their importance should never be underestimated, and their growth shouldn’t be taken for granted,” she said. While holding governments to account on their small business proposals and promises, Ms Carnell said the ASBFEO also has a packed agenda of its own for 2017.

“Having completed our Small Business Bank Loans Inquiry Report late last year, we will be actively working with the finance sector and ASIC to implement the changes we believe are necessary to restore balance between banks and their small business borrowers, including compliance with unfair contract term laws, along with ensuring a low cost dispute resolution mechanism is put in place to deal with past, present and future claims of small business mistreatment by their bank lender,” Ms Carnell said. “Our inquiry into payment times and practices is now in full swing. We’ve had a significant response to

the call for submissions and the office is busy going through these in order to report in March on just how bad the problem of late or no payments is for small business, and how we can turn this growing trend around.” Other issues the ASBFEO has outlined in the 2017 Agenda include reducing Red Tape, improving small business access to government procurement, the promotion of best practice succession planning for family enterprises, and the importance of mental health for small business owners and their staff. Infertility Infertility affects so many people! It’s a topic people are often embarrassed to talk about, so this week I want to shed some light and offer you some tips that might help you to welcome a beautiful baby in to the world Stress is one of the most common factors that can cause infertility. Stress plays havoc on so many aspects of our health so it is recommended to reduce stress as much as possible when trying to conceive. The longer it takes to fall pregnant, the greater the levels of stress and anxiety. I’m sure you’ve heard people say ‘once we stopped trying and stopped thinking about falling pregnant it, just happened’ and this is the case for many couples. Work out ways to manage your stress. That might be through yoga, meditation or gentle exercise. Whatever it is that you enjoy, do that and see what happens. Diet this is something that needs to be considered. The nutrient status for both partners is very important during the development stages and can have a huge impact on both fertility and the health of the baby. It is recommended that both partners avoid alcohol consumption for three months before trying to conceive. Alcohol reduces the sperm count in males and can prevent the implantation of the fertilized 32

egg in females. Reducing caffeine consumption is also suggested. Caffeine has been associated with an increased time to conceive and has been linked to other factors of infertility. THE EMOTION OF

MUSIC

Accomplished violinist Doreen Cumming has travelled the word, but found her biggest journey within.

oreen Cumming is a radiant, quick-witted and passionate violinist who has performed with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and on a number of recordings for big-name film scores. She’s acted in all violin positions including soloist and concertmaster, and plays with a depth of skill and emotion which has impressed audiences in Asia, Europe, America and of course, Australia. Yet the greatest accomplishments in Doreen’s life have been more personal in nature: a matter of overcoming herself. Achievement, in her eyes, is purely a matter of process: “you just practice, you take all the steps in the right order, and you can achieve it. But personal success? It’s a completely different thing”. Doreen began learning violin at the age of six, choosing the instrument simply because it was what her elder sister Lorna played. Her practical, process-driven side – which has enabled her to reach such professional heights – sits beside an almost reckless tendency for spontaneity. This was epitomised when she moved to Tasmania from Canberra, alone and sixteen yearsold, to study music with just two dollars in

her pocket while her parents were away on vacation. “I showed up at the university to further my studies in music—completely unaware of how it all worked—and found out I’d missed the cut off for applications by three months. I said, ‘Oh. Well, can I apply anyway?’” They allowed the late application and she was accepted into the school. Her teacher, Jan Sedivka, was one of Poland’s National Treasures. “He was one of the many talented Jewish people—consisting of artists, musicians and scientists—who had been shipped out of Poland to keep them safe during World War II,” she tells me. “He was amazing.” Funding her stay by working at a sushi bar, she “got lucky” and was soon asked to play with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. She maintains it had a lot to do with having Geoffrey Lancaster as her accompanist—a well-renowned pianist in the classical music world — with whom she got along with famously, their music sessions often running for four hours straight. From there, “taking the right steps” led her to prestigious roles such as Soloist and Acting Concertmaster. I asked if it she found these roles nerve-racking. “Oh revoltingly nerve-racking,” she says.

“Peers behind you and a thousand, two thousand strangers in front of you. You’d love to just run, but you can’t.” Doreen stayed with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra for fourteen years while Lorna performed with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. “I prefer the big sounds of the Romantic era, the 1900s, over the Chamber style. Also, Chambers are smaller, which means more pressure.” She then took a contract in Spain with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Galicia as a spontaneous decision to leave a difficult personal situation, taking with her only what would fit into a suitcase and selling the rest in a garage sale. “I had a 10-year relationship that ended. I wanted to get as far as possible away from that relationship. He kept leaving and coming back, leaving and coming back. My self-esteem was so low after being a convenience for that long.” On her return from Spain, Doreen found the bushfires of 2003 had affected her parents quite badly. Her mother, father and brother had stayed to fight the fires to save the family home, and her mother suffered post-traumatic amnesia from the stress. “She walked outside and said ‘where’s the garage?’ She would only talk only about the fire for years. It’s understandable: if you imagine ten-metre tall flames rushing down at your house while you’re standing there with a hose—it still makes me feel ill.” “I wanted to live closer to them, but I couldn’t earn enough with the Canberra Symphony because they’re only part time. So I did a Chef’s apprenticeship in Canberra. It only took 2.5 years instead of 4 years because I just kept doing back-to-back units and was working 80100 hours a week in the industry.” Her stint as chef lasted “a very short while”. Doreen then gained a contract with the Sydney Opera & Ballet and worked in “Scratch Orchestras” like Australian Idol. “Scratch Orchestras are where companies get players they like from all over the place, and an orchestra is formed only for that one thing. People fight to the death to get on the lists,” she laughs. Despite the prestige of being top of the producer’s lists, the experience didn’t leave her with the best impression of that segment of the music industry. “I’m very sad at the standard of that sort of music. It’s all manufactured. They can flick the switch and fix all the intonation. At a high level, it’s impossible to fake it, whereas this level is all fake.” It was at this point where Doreen began her journey as a music teacher. “Me and my partner at the time were paying exorbitant amounts of rent for a townhouse in Leichhardt and I was working too many hours. A friend had asked me to do a couple of teaching jobs in Tamworth on Sundays, I’d fly out in morning and back at night. I was offered a fulltime job teaching there and took it, and we both moved to Tamworth.” She visited Orange when one of her students won the Concerto competition here, which led to her making the Colour City her home. “I came down here to watch [my student] perform. Looking on the website I found they had a teaching position down here and I went for it. I didn’t like Tamworth.” Despite her continual success on the professional front, her personal life

remained rocky. “I’d been with my partner for five years, we’d met when I was an apprentice chef. When we moved to Orange he went away to work in Canberra for what was meant to be three weeks, but he never came back.” Maintaining a sense of humour about what then could have only been a devastating situation, Doreen adds: “I saw him about a year later at the Canberra markets, he texted saying ‘what are you shopping for at the markets?’ I replied: ‘an AK47’. We haven’t spoken much since then.” Doreen’s strength and resilience were never more tested than when she suffered her biggest hurdle in life: her sister Lorna suddenly passing away after a motorcycle accident three years ago, at only 44 years old. “I describe it as being shattered. Very fragmented mentally and emotionally. I think it’s been my saving grace in a way, because when you put yourself back together you do so more honestly. I had to build myself as an adult.” In fact, one of Doreen’s violin teachers wrote to her after Lorna’s sudden passing and suggested that now was the time to find her own wings. “I’d just always felt like she was the better player. And she was. But in some ways—a few little ways—I had my own stuff going on, and I shouldn’t have been comparing.” Throughout the trauma of dealing with such a loss, Doreen found a worthy partner, friend and confidant in nowhusband Darren. They met last year and the connection was there from the start.

hold a special place in her heart, Stella, 13, and Jasper, 11. “After two long and disappointing years of IVF, I never thought I’d be gifted with the two most wonderful, loving children.” Doreen now enjoys the freedom of working from her own studio, where she can allow her students to go on their own journey at their own pace. “I mould myself around the students’ journey, if that makes sense. It can’t be a ‘one size fits all’ approach, there’s no set formula,” she explains. “You see them go through all their stages, you’re there with this safe space —there are no emotional parameters at all. Actually, you want to break down the emotional parameters, because that’s what music is about —creating music requires emotion. Music is storytelling in symbols instead of words. “When music brings an audience to tears, it’s because they’ve gone into their own little world. The music says a lot; great well-written music will give you the start of the emotion. But if you play a well-written piece on a synthesiser you’re not going to get the same level of emotion.” Perhaps Doreen’s depth of emotion is the intangible thing that sets her apart which —having had the honour of seeing her play—I couldn’t quite put my finger on. I knew she’d temporarily taken me to a different world, I just wasn’t sure how I got there. Do you ever forget where you are?

“We are both such strong individuals, both so similar even though we’ve had completely different lives. He’s from Lithgow and has been as far as Queensland and perhaps Dubbo. Country boy with an IQ of somewhere around 160. He laughs about his IQ and says you could fluke it. He’s amazing. He’s very generous and will always put himself out to suit others.” What has been the difference with this relationship? I ask, pondering her painful track-record. “The difference is the emotional connection; the security of someone who sees your generosity and doesn’t take advantage of it, but loves it instead. For both of us, the willingness is there to be the one who compensates, but neither of us are willing to abuse it in each other. We’re still stunned at how easy it’s been; how perfect it is. Big words but it’s true.” Adding to Darren’s long list of attributes that sends Doreen all dreamy-eyed, is his two children who

I ask, wondering if she experiences the same feeling she creates for her audiences. “Yeah, but you often peek out like a meerkat and go ‘oh crap there’s all these people’ or ‘did I put underwear on?’ or ‘I really feel like lamb tonight’. The thought bubbles keep popping in, and it’s horrific when you do pop into the present because I don’t particularly want to be there, I want to be in my little musical plot.” I mention that I like the idea of a musical ‘plot’. “It’s like a great comic. Their awareness in time. Their use of it. Just hold that note a little longer. It’s like Pavarotti holding that note in Nessun Dorma. That’s the key to why we keep doing it. It allows us to keep so in touch with emotions—the below the surface ones, they’re just so gripping. Playing happy music is quite easy. But getting the raw emotion you have to dig a bit deeper.” Doreen leans forward and whispers: “maybe that’s why we’re all a bit messed up.”

Back in November, the Minister for Revenue and Financial Services, Kelly O’Dwyer, confirmed publicly that the minimum standard for people to be able to call themselves a financial adviser is just four days of training!

hile the Government is legislating to impose higher education and ethical standards on financial advisers, this will take time to implement and be effective. It means that in the short-term future there is still the potential that people will be paying for advice from someone with four days’ worth of training, not to mention how many people have already paid for this in the past. While many are arguing that four days of training is not enough time to learn what you need to know to be a financial adviser, I’d like to offer a different viewpoint. If in the past, the financial planning industry has been willing to allow people to give advice with only 4 days training, then can it really be that hard to learn what

you need to know? These people are charging people THOUSANDS of dollars for their ‘advice’. Instead, could the majority of people simply be taught what they need to know to do it themselves? As a financial planner with more than 15 years of experience in the financial services industry (backed by years of study and the highest level of qualification attained, not 4 days of training!), I believe most Australians do have the brain power to quickly learn what they need to know to get their financial situation in a far more powerful position. There is plenty of information out there but usually the problem is that the information being provided is skewed towards leading people to buying a particular financial product.

Therefore, the key is to access information that isn’t being provided by an organisation trying to sell you their financial products… that is, the big banks and insurance companies. While they might well appear to be well-intentioned, the simple reality is that if they are only willing to give you advice based on trying to get you to buy their products then their advice is conflicted. Also, be wary of most financial planning businesses trying to create an appearance of independence. The majority are in fact working under the license of a big company (usually a big 4 bank or AMP) meaning they will be limited to only being able to recommend the products those big companies allow them to.

By all means see what’s out there, however if you’re looking for a way to get world-class financial information explained in an easyto-understand format, that you can then use to create your own financial plan for a better future, then you have a local option. 1. Draw curtains and blinds to block out sunlight. Leave curtains and blinds closed during the day to block out the sun’s natural heat, then open them at night (if safe to do so), to let any cool air in. 2. Shut out the hotter rooms. Sleep on the bottom floor of your home. Depending on the configuration of your house, this can be a simple solution to staying cool, as hot air rises. 7. Keep ahead of your bills. Most

energy companies offer discounts for paying bills on time and for paying by direct debit. If you can afford it, pay your bills by the due date and you could enjoy up to a 20 per cent discount. 8. Turn it slightly up. It’s tempting to have your air conditioner temperature on a very cold setting, such as 18 degrees, but 22 degrees is adequate for summer. More often than not, you won’t notice the difference in the room, but it can save you a significant cost over the year. 9. Apply for energy rebates or assistance. If you’re a low-income household that is struggling to make ends meet, look online to see if your state government offers a rebate or some other form of financial support. In NSW, there’s a means-tested Family Energy Rebate that gives eligible households a $150 credit on their electricity bills, while the Low Income Household Rebate gives households a $235 credit. I was born in Lochinvar on August 7, 1982. I grew up on a 170-acre farm in the Hunter Region along with my four siblings. I started modelling as a teenager and landed my first acting gig on the ABC TV series Children’s Hospital (1997). In 1999 I won the AFI Young Actors Award for my role in Wildside. In 2004, I starred in the short film Everything Goes, and the romantic drama Somersault with Sam Worthington. I’ve since starred in Hollywood films A Good Year (2006), Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), Limitless (2011), Sucker Punch (2011), RoboCop (2014), and Solace (2015). I am a dedicated vegetarian and have been an ambassador for Australian animal rights group Voiceless since 2006.
