ast Friday evening, the Orange community gathered in Cook Park for the Light the Night walk, a fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation. The evening included entertainment by Ben McGarity, Olivia Mirrington, a local drumming group and Stepping Out Dancers. The kids were kept entertained with a Jumping Castle. In addition, local food vendors, Trang Hue Catering, Cocos coffee and the Rapid Relief team provided the

nourishment. Each vendor in attendance was also a contributor to the overall fundraising with the Rapid Relief group donating 100% of their profits. The big fundraiser was the sale of the lanterns; gold representing someone lost, White to signify those on their own journey, whilst blue lanterns show they care. Aiming to raise $2million, at the time of writing the halfway mark had been smashed!

BEING A HUSBAND IS TOUGH!

ob and Debbie live in Brisbane, though a previous Orange local—Bob was born in Molong. We caught up with him as he and Debbie drove through Orange having just finished participating in the QLD Variety Bash of 2016. The bash raises money for sick, disadvantaged or children with special needs.

Every vehicle has to raise a minimum of $8,500 for Variety and all vehicles must be 30 years old or older at the time of entry and be nonperformance modified. The Bash is not a race, rally or speed trial. The single rule of the Bash is to relax and enjoy the event away from everyday pressures, whilst seeing and experiencing the splendour of the Australian Outback.

“This is my ninth year participating, I do it for the children, just seeing their smiles, it makes you cry, it’s tough to see how a lot of them live. Variety is a great charity to get involved with, you know where the money is going. The purpose is giving money, gifts or equipment to schools and children who need it most. I cannot wait to join in on the next one!”

y judgement is that few husbands could love their wife more than I love mine. Those who know me well will often hear me refer to my wife Jackie as the loveliest lady in the world or Jack the Rippa (not ripper). When asked how I am, my usual answer is Jackie still loves me so I’m still a very happy chappy. That said, a couple of months back she said something that jolted me in a way that I NEVER would have expected. In a rather angry moment, she said “You’re too helpful!” Well, what does a loving husband do with that? We husbands are rarely presented with such a wonderful opportunity to get an advantage over our wives like this. I did the only thing I could do, I now throw it back at her at every opportunity that I need to score a point. Of course I never score but I do enjoy the throwing bit. By the way, you’re probably wondering what wonderful things I did to cop such a wonderful accolade. Basically, I hover. Now ‘hover’ is a dirty word in our home. It depends of course on how you interpret it. What my wife considers hovering, I consider helping. E.g. She’ll be preparing dinner and because I’m such a loving and helpful husband, I’ll come into the kitchen and say something like “would you like me to peel the vegetables or do anything to help?” Sounds innocent enough doesn’t it but “Danger Will Robinson”, Jackie often sees that as “hovering!” I think my failing is that I offer such help on a very regular basis

and she feels I’m checking up on her or something. Last weekend we had our children and grandkids stay for the weekend. When this happens, I often offer to cook the meals for everyone while Jackie plays with the grandkids, they can’t get enough of her and it just makes sense to free her up if I can. Sadly, helping in this way also got me into trouble with Jackie saying at one stage “they’ll think I’ve forgotten how to cook!” I quickly told her not to be so stupid, especially since she’s among the best cooks in the world in my mind, and probably part of the reason why I had a heart attack recently, too much good food. Anyway, as a husband and getting it right is always going to be a challenge but I’ve learnt my lesson and now I’m very careful before I set out to be helpful around the house. I now ask before I do anything to make sure I haven’t exceeded my help quota. It annoys Jackie no end! All jokes aside, I just love her and she loves me and this is really a whole lot of nonsense, nonsense that we enjoy as part of our marriage and that gives us lots to laugh about together. Men and women certainly are different, aren’t we? Footnote: To be fair, I ran this past Jackie who said “Typical journalist who doesn’t let the facts get in the way of a good story. Next time let me describe what your ‘hovering’ looks like.”

THE ORANGE WOMEN’S SHED IS A PLACE FOR WOMEN TO GET TOGETHER TO SOCIALISE BUT ALSO TO LEARN TRADES-BASED SKILLS SO THEY CAN COMPLETEBASIC HOMEMAINTENANCE IMPROVEMENTS. PROVING VERY POPULAR, THE WOMEN’S SHED IS POWERING ALONG WITH NEARLY 50 MEMBERS BUT IT CURRENTLY NEEDS DONATIONS FOR IT TO CONTINUE TO SUCCEED. donations so they can afford to put a door on the shed they use at Wangarang Industries. Wangarang Industries allows the group to use its facility for free but more funding is needed to enclose the space and put in toilet facilities. The Orange Women’s Shed concept was pushed along by Orange City Council’s Neighbour Aid and Support Worker, Paula Beattie, who was recently asked to spruik the success of the women’s shed at the Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT) Australia Conference. “It was a great honour to be given that opportunity,” Ms Beattie said. Ms Beattie said the group were grateful for the support of Wangarang Industries and Bunnings Warehouse, which invites the group to attend workshops in the store. The workshops had been invaluable

range City Council’s Services Policy Committee Chair Ron Gander said the initiative, started by Council staff, had made significant impacts on the lives of women across the region. “It is aimed at women who haven’t had the opportunity to learn how to do basic home improvements, anything from fixing a hole in the wall, to building a set of shelves, filling gaps and basic construction,” “It means they don’t have to rely on male partners or relatives or hiring professionals. But for women who have lost a partner, it is a great opportunity to make sure they have a social outlet and they can speak with people in similar positions.” The women need donations of power tools, hands tools and building supplies but also cash and in-kind labour

ikeMind is an innovative mental health service which will provide a totally new coordinated service response for adults with mental health concerns, through a ‘one stop’ hub and support under

one roof. Services include, Mental Health care, Drug and Alcohol services, Employment and Training support, Housing Assistance, Access to GPs, psychologists, social workers and more. People who attend the LikeMind

centre will be triaged, assessed and a care plan will be developed for them. Aftercare is the lead organisation for the centre and the primary partner to Aftercare for the centre is Western NSW Local Health District. Aftercare

he way Orange is marketed to the rest of the world is about to change for the better. A packed meeting of tourist operators help in Orange earlier this week heard of a plan for a new joint venture between Brand Orange and Orange City Council that will streamline the way our city and local region’s tourism marketing is handled. The new joint venture will also represent all sectors of Orange and the regional area’s business interests, not just food and wine which has been very prominent in the past. The meeting heard how our current tourism marketing is fragmented and sending mixed signals. There is more than one website with Council’s promotion using Visit Orange, while Brand Orange uses Brand Orange after earlier using Taste Orange. The new joint venture will see them all come together under one banner, possibly Destination Orange but that is only one suggestion at this stage. Operation of the local Visitor Information Centre will also become part of the overall process. The current Brand Orange Board will go through a transition over the next 6–12 months with a new Board having representatives from a broader interest base including Council representatives from Orange Council or an amalgamated Council should that eventuate. Brand Orange has played an important role in promoting Orange since it started and its success cannot be under-estimated. Their budget during their first year was around $150,000, today it’s around $800,000 with around half of that funded by Orange City Council. We need a strong, effective and wellresourced tourism marketing strategy and this new joint venture seems, on face value, to be taking us further in the right direction.

ORANGE IS SET TO ENTER A NEW ERA OF FAST BROADBAND WITH THE OFFICIAL SWITCH ON OF THE NBN™ NETWORK TO MORE THAN 9,250 HOMES AND BUSINESSES IN THE TOWNSHIP, NBN ANNOUNCED RECENTLY.

Spokesperson, Marcela Balart, said, “The rollout of the nbn™ is gaining momentum across the country, providing homes and businesses with access to internet speeds and bandwidth not seen before across Australia; something that has been desperately needed in regional and rural Australia for many years… “By November the rollout of the nbn™ network in Orange will be complete with more than 19,000 Orange homes and businesses able to access fast and reliable broadband. “These residents join more

than three million others across Australia that are currently able to enjoy the benefits of the nbn™ network, with more than a million of those in NSW.” Phocas Software is one local Orange business now eligible to connect to the nbn™ network. As an international technology and software company, Phocas runs its product and platform development out of Orange providing support to 1200 global customers. Phocas Software, CEO, Phil Dodds, said, “We sell cloudbased data analytics software, so very fast internet at a reasonable price is critical if our operation is to expand in Orange. At the moment we have 35 people based locally and we’re pretty

much at capacity for the number of people who can access our US-based servers. “With the nbn™ network finally here we’re unrestricted with local expansion. We can centralise our operations and provide greater flexibility to our people when it comes to working from home options. In turn, this will mean we can be nimbler, be available to customers 24/7and support them more efficiently. “Over the long-term, improved internet access means the region’s business community will be able to attract and retain more talent, particularly those with information and technology skills,” Mr Dodds said. Making the switch to fast

and reliable broadband is not automatic. People can find out whether they are eligible to connect to the nbn™ network by checking their address - nbnco. com.au/switch. They should then contact their preferred phone or internet provider to discuss their needs and make the switch. nbn will be holding information sessions at the Australian National Field Days later this month. Locals will be able to test drive nbn’s Sky Muster™ satellite service on its custom-made Road Muster vehicle with experts on hand to show how the satellite service works, explain what the nbn can do for their home or business and answer any nbn-related questions.

The man with the kind eyes.” That’s what I saw when I decided to peruse the newly created Facebook page of Jean Paul Dal Monte, an actor who just made his debut appearance on Humans of New York. Humans of New York (or HONY), was created by Brandon Stanton, an American bond trader who lost his job in 2010, and started photographing New Yorkers as a hobby. He soon began adding captions and quotes, which eventually evolved into full interviews. The authenticity of the stories shared soon captivated a worldwide audience, and HONY’s Facebook page now has over 17 million followers worldwide. On speaking with Dal Monte, I wondered if perhaps Stanton’s skill of uncovering vulnerabilities stems not so much in his interviewing techniques, but more so in finding the right people to interview. Dal Monte warns, “I may say things that get me

into trouble. I can’t help it. Go easy on me.” It’s surprising to discover that prior to acting, he delved into the corporate world in his 20s – the opposite end of the spectrum to the creative life he’s living today. “I studied accounting, economics and marketing. I did well, and was second in a class of 300. But it was only when I did the marketing course that I realised it was all a scam. Marketing is all about taking advantage of people’s unhappiness. Unhappy people spend more. That’s not for me. I just want to share myself with people.” Acting became an option when a friend saw him practising Kung Fu; “not the kind that would be useful in a fight. The slow, purposeful body movements. Like monks.” “My friend told me ‘you move well. You’d do well at this acting school.’ It was a slightly nontraditional school, and body movement was a huge part of it. I knew straight away it was for me. I knew acting was what I wanted to do with my life.” Appearing on HONY only a week before we spoke, Dal Monte was pleasantly surprised by the thousands of supportive comments and ‘likes’ from HONY fans. “It’s been nice. Sometimes I feel like I’m never quite ‘right’ in the acting world. I’m always just a little outside of the box. The positive support gives me a boost to just keep going.” And it couldn’t be any timelier. “To be honest, I think about giving up almost every single day. I mean, I’m at a crossroads in my life. Part of me wants to meet someone and start a family; I’m not getting any younger. On the other hand, I’ve invested so much time into acting...” And the backup plan, if the jobs don’t keep flowing? “I feel like it’s beyond my control. If my visa doesn’t get renewed because I’m not considered ‘extraordinary’, I’ll just move back to Italy and work on the land, growing mushrooms and teaching for a living. “But for now, I’ll just keep going.” Humans of New York is a space where we realise that we’re all facing the same battles. Whether our heartbreak is ‘artistic’, like Dal Monte’s, or otherwise, life is certainly full of conflicts and compromise. The ‘man with the kind eyes’, like the many unique and exuberant personalities appearing on HONY’s pages before him, show us that it’s all OK. It’s OK to be vulnerable. THIS OCTOBER IS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH. LAST WEEK WE TALKED ABOUT WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH. THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT REDUCING THE STIGMA THAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TERM ‘MENTAL HEALTH’. What is the stigma? There is often a social stigma attached to people when they talk of mental ill health, and the discrimination or lack of understanding that follows can make difficult experiences even harder. We need to work together to create supportive environments that help foster a good understanding of mental health and mental ill health. By promoting and providing opportunities for

people to gain this knowledge we can work together in communities to smash the stigma! How can we promote understanding? 2016 Mental Health Month theme is ‘Learn & Grow’. By learning about our own mental health we can grow our understanding and wellbeing! There are many services and programs that can be used for mental health education

Gone are the days where you can get something for nothing … what a shame.

ne of my most prized possessions is my old Bulldogs footy jersey. Cotton, lots of stitching on the V, big embroidered badge, ¾ sleeve, turned up collar. My lovely wife bought it for me as a present in 1993— my first birthday gift as a married guy. I still have it (in fact, I’m wearing it at this minute as I type). It’s not exactly in mint condition, but the sponsor’s logo – a car manufacturer, is still emblazoned on the front, meaning that company has had almost 25 years of free advertising from me every time I wear the jersey, which is a lot. In a rare story of getting something for almost nothing, a couple weeks ago I picked up a real bargain in Sydney, a Jarryd Hayne grid iron jersey—reduced from $140 to $50. It’s not like it’ll be worth anything in the future, but maybe a great talking point. I received an email from the Bulldogs club this week letting me know about the end of season ‘bargains’ as they run out all the old merchandise. They were excited to inform me that the jerseys from last season has been reduced to a rock bottom $99. My manufacturing knowledge is limited, but I’m pretty sure those jerseys would be made o/s at a cost far, far less than $99. Not only that, but the sponsor still has their name on the runout jerseys, even if they’re not with that team next year – a gift that keeps on giving for them. Why not drop the price on the old jerseys to $50? They wouldn’t be losing any money I don’t think, and they might get rid of all of them. Win, win, win—bargain for me, the club gets rid of all the old stock, the sponsor has yet another happy spruiker for their product. Do the math—selling 3 at

$50 makes more money than selling one at $99. I’m sure this would be the same for all other footy clubs, no matter what the code. Cast your mind back to the Easter Show of old. I clearly remember my first time at the show in the early/mid 70’s. The farmyard animals, face painting, Dagwood Dogs and of course the Sample Bags. Back then, they weren’t ‘Show’ Bags, they were a true sampling exhibition of the wares of a company, stacked full of goodies to tempt you to switch to their products. Mini drink cans, every type of the bags of lollies, model cars, t-shirts. In the current Showbags, you’ll get no change from twenty or thirty bucks or maybe more, just a can of drink and a plastic toy, a hat or a poster if you’re lucky. Sheesh. What a rip off. They also include flyers with ‘bonus offers’ in them, sucking more money out of your wallet for little or nothing in return. I’m no marketing guru, but it makes a bit of sense to me to forgo a quick buck today, sell the product with a sponsor logo on it at a cheaper price, not a dearer one, with the long term view of seeing more of them out and about—maybe even for twenty plus years like my old Doggies jersey. The day will come when cotton panels will become threads and I’ll have to retire the 1993 jersey and get a new one. I can hope that someone in charge of my club might think about a super-discount on an old jersey. I promise they’ll get their money’s worth as I showcase their sponsor for another twenty years.

Australian Senate urged to lead the nation in united fight against suicide Senators of from all states, territories and political parties have been urged to come together as one and tackle the national suicide rate that now exceeds 3000 a year and continues to climb. beyondblue Chairman The Hon. Jeff Kennett AC has written to every Australian Senator asking them to put aside political differences and work together for the Great Social Purpose of reversing the suicide rate. Mr Kennett was spurred to

action following the release last week of the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics Causes of Death data that revealed 3027 Australians killed themselves in 2015 at a rate of more than eight a day. “To me that is a national disgrace,” Mr Kennett said. “Thousands upon thousands of families, friends and work colleagues are left grieving and bereft by these deaths. Nobody is better off when someone takes their own life. “Worse still, the suicide rate among our First Peoples, our Indigenous community, is twice times that of non-Indigenous Australians. We can’t sit by and allow this to continue. “Nearly three times as many people died by suicide in 2015 as were killed on the roads. People demonstrated in the streets to bring an end to the decade-long Vietnam War in which 500 Australians lost their lives. We lost six times that many to suicide in 2015 alone.

“We need breakthrough! We need a sense of urgency! We need a new language when talking about suicide. We need a champion – or a team of champions – to take up the advocacy that will start reducing this unacceptable death rate.” Mr Kennett urged anybody who might be thinking about suicide to get support from their GP or a mental health professional or talk to somebody you trust about how you are feeling. “It is never too late,” Mr Kennett said. “Suicide is preventable.” Mental health professions are available at the beyondblue Support Service via phone 24/7 on 1300 22 4636 or via www.beyondblue.org.au/getsupport for online chat (3PM12AM AEST) or email responses (within 24 hours).

ORANGE YOUTH ARTS FESTIVAL SUPPORTING OUR FUTURE LEADERS ESTABLISHED IN 2014, THE ORANGE YOUTH ARTS FESTIVAL (OYAF) IS ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF LOCAL YOUTH ARTS AND CULTURE. EACH YEAR THE EVENT HAS GROWN EXPONENTIALLY, WITH AN INCREASING NUMBER OF ORANGE BUSINESSES AND ORGANISATIONS GETTING ON BOARD TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT.

reated to empower our future leaders, it’s a cause which is close to organiser Vince Lovecchio’s heart. You may be familiar with Vince from his role as Community Engagement Officer at Canobolas Rural Technology High School, however he’s quick to point out this event extends well beyond Canobolas students. “It started with Canobolas High playing a strong role in 2014, but now our school has no more to do with OYAF than any other local school. All secondary and primary schools in the Orange area, both public and private, are on board. And the event also extends beyond school age; it’s to enhance leadership skills and provide empowerment for young people up to the age of 25.” You don’t need to spend much time chatting to Vince before it’s apparent that for him, there’s a strong altruistic drive behind this festival. And it’s for reasons that

affect us all, as a community. “It’s my personal belief that every young person should be given every opportunity to reach their full potential. And it’s our community’s responsibility to provide those opportunities. That’s what OYAF is all about.” It’s a belief that Vince takes seriously, volunteering much of his own time into the project to ensure its success and longevity. “I can’t take all the credit; it’s amazing to see the number of local partners who’ve come on board. Without them OYAF wouldn’t be possible.” There’s no denying OYAF has a huge social impact, with themes touching on topics which are important both locally and globally. “The Orange Youth Arts Festival has an enormous impact on our community! It addresses significant issues such as migration, refugees, mental health, culture

and more.” This year, OYAF is running an extensive array of events through the collective action of Vince and our supportive local community. “There are too many events to list! I’d recommend everyone head to our website page to check out what’s on. One thing I’d like to give special mention to is the Interlude concert: Young aspiring musicians are given a platform to share their music with the community. I’d love more youths to get on board to perform.” Orange Youth Arts Festival is a fantastic event which successfully combines fun with social good, for the benefit of our entire community. Caiti Baker: Heavy on my Heart

CAITI BAKER WAS CLEARLY BORN TO PERFORM. WITH AN IMPRESSIVE VOCAL RANGE, AND A STRONG, SOULFUL VOICE WITH SHADES OF LAURYN HILL, SHE MANAGES TO FUSE BLUES AND POP TO CREATE HER OWN GENRE.

here’s blues, there’s pop, and there’s Caiti Baker. Her debut solo single; Heavy on My Heart, has been given spins on well-known radio stations including Double J and Triple J, and was added to the Rage playlist. Having performed for almost a decade now, previously as one half of the electro-soul act Sietta, this is

no new thing for Caiti. “It’s exciting to hear your songs played on radio. Sietta got a fair bit of airtime, so I had experienced it all before. But when you’re performing solo, it’s on a whole new level. I’m really grateful to the radio stations for the airtime.” Given her sassy dance moves in the Heavy on My Heart single, and a bio that describes her someone who “writes songs and sings the hell out of them”, I should not be surprised when she tells me she does not suffer from pre-stage nerves. She’s even having her hair done for her next video clip while we’re chatting. “It’s what I’m meant to be doing. It’s what I’m good at.
