Ok. You can turn the tap off now, we’re done. Despite the big wet that hit again last weekend, the sporting codes were able to get their Grand Finals done and dusted for 2016. Congrats to the winners and commiserations to the rest. Unfortunately, there can be only one! We can’t always give the different codes the coverage we may like in our magazine; being a weekly just makes it a bit tricky sometimes and I hate the thought of leaving anyone out… with that in mind, we sent our photographers out last weekend and the benefit to you is six pages of sports! On October 7, Orange will join cities and towns across the country to unite in hope on one single night to raise funds to support families with blood cancer with the Leukaemia Foundation’s Light the Night.

DOG OWNER? STRAP IN, THIS ONE IS GOING TO GET A BIT ROUGH. WORDS BY JAMIE STEDMAN

taring out my back window last weekend, I watched in horror as two people struggled to pull their dogs away from an infant Galah. Somehow, the dogs had gotten hold of the poor thing and, as dogs do, they went crazy and the owners simply couldn’t handle them. These were not hunting dogs as such, but they did what dogs do, at least dogs that are not under the “effective control of a competent person at all times when out in public” as is required by the law. They weren’t on a leash! I live behind—or in front of—a park. One of our city’s many lovely areas for people to enjoy with their families. You can ride push bikes, you can enjoy the parks’ numerous play areas, you can throw a Frisbee, kick a footy. The list goes on. What you can’t do however, is have your dog off the leash. It is, quite simply, against the rules. Now I don’t mind too much; when I walk my dogs through the area I follow the rules, I even pick up after them, which I find abhorrent, but you see they are the rules and so, as a member of a functioning society, I follow them. And life, and the dogs, goes on. I carry a big stick though, something I have to do as my dogs can be a bit skittish when it comes to other dogs and because other dog owners deem it ok to allow their dogs to charge at mine. Whether it be playfully or not, my dogs go nuts. The stick is a last resort should the animals decide to go at it. If I have to, I will use it. Right now, I have sitting on my

desk, 23 emails or letters telling me about dog related incidents. Some are ‘thumbs’, some are nonsensical rubbish, but the common fact among them all is that every single one of these incidents’ could have been avoided if people put their dog on a leash – as required by the law. There are places for dogs to run leash-free and yet each of these incidents has happened across town, in areas that are not leash-free. Why? Somewhat in frustration, I have decided to at least try to explain what our responsibilities are, as dog owners. Most of these rules can be found here—https://www.lawsociety.com. au—now you know! Your dog must, unless it is exempt from this requirement, be under the effective control of a competent person at all times when out in public. This means that it must be on a leash and under the control of someone capable of restraining it. A small child, for example, may not be able to control a large dog. Under these circumstances, an adult capable of restraining the dog, should walk the dog. A dog is not considered to be under the effective control of a competent person if the person has more than 4 dogs under his or her control. If you fail to comply with this requirement, you, or if you are not present, the person in control of your dog, if s/he is aged 16 or over, may be liable for a maximum penalty

of $1,100 or $11,000 in the case of a restricted dog, dangerous or menacing dog. Clearly, the most important thing about walking your dog in a public place is making sure it’s under your effective control at all times. Even if you’re in a leash-free area, it’s crucial that your dog is trained to be able to respond instantly to commands. If it falls even slightly below this expectation, KEEP IT ON A LEASH! The dog won’t care, it’s probably just happy to be out. These are but a few of the rules of responsible dog ownership. I know that 95% of owners are doing the right thing 95% of the time, but please, when walking your dog consider the ramifications of it attacking/rushing or causing injury or distress to anyone or anything else. Just because your little pixiebelle seems fine around you, doesn’t mean it won’t attack if it feels territorial or threatened. And if it does, how will you feel when you have to keep it chained up, confined to a small, secure yard or put down? Simple solution: keep it on a leash. Prevention is the best defence. Personally, I would love to see a targeted approach from Council and the Rangers; most attacks/incidents don’t happen inside business hours and they would know where incidents are happening; areas would be easy to identify. If it’s a budget issue, I would think that after a week of repeated infringements/fines being issued, the Rangers would make triple their wage! Might not

make many dog owners happy but it might help get the message through. **Please know that I contacted both council and the Rangers about the Galah incident, I also went out and spoke with the owners, but what could council and/or the Rangers do? The dogs and the owners had left within five minutes. They can’t be

everywhere; it was late on a Sunday afternoon after all. The Galah was unfortunately beyond help. If you are involved in a dog related incident, please call council customer service number 63938000 or 1300 650 511. Where possible, people should take photos of incidents/ offending dogs and owners. Do not put yourself at risk.

“I have lived in Orange my whole life; Rugby is a religion in my books and as long as I play for Orange City, I’ll be happy. I was quite literally born and raised in the club, it’s an extremely close and family orientated club, 90% of my mates all play for City or have something to do with it; must say though, the thought of heading overseas to play Rugby does appeal to me. I’d like to say I play golf well but I’m pretty sure golf plays me most of the time, for anyone who says its stress relieving... that’s a lie! A while ago I started getting right into going to the gym, probably should’ve stuck to the cakes and pies, because it has made playing in the front row hard. Other than that you’ll find me at work and hanging out, getting up to no good with my mates.”

ts Tuesday, so I’m pondering… Tonight OCC have a genuine game changer on the agenda at their monthly meeting. If I had a crystal ball, if I could see the future, will it be a vibrant Orange with a healthy community riding the back of the world wide cycling boom, having born the fruit of a little foresight back in Feb 2014? Let’s look back at how we came to this position. Early 2014 Council approached the Mountain Bike Club to discuss an idea that creating a world class Mountain Bike Destination could replace or at least offset, the loss of Electrolux and create some long-term employment opportunities. Since, the MTB Club (OMC) have been chipping away, working with OCC through the extensive process that might one day realise their dream. Of course tonight’s meeting is no lay-down-misere; there is a lot to consider, environmental impact, heritage sites, opinions from stakeholders, the finances, the list goes on. But what CAN NOT be argued, is that MTB’ing is BIG business. Part of the process thus far has been engaging World Trail, (look them up, they are the big player in Australasian trail design and construction. Their previous projects are wide and varied, and include world heritage listed sites, trails for the MTB World Championships and more recently the environmentally sensitive Derby project in Tasmania). I was lucky enough to meet Glen Jacobs and Gerard McHugh when they visited Orange in 2015 for a period to develop the Concept Plan that OCC commissioned. Having these guys come to our town and get seriously excited about the potential and opportunity we have should generate some enthusiasm. When Glen Jacobs says “this should become the best MTB destination in Australia”, we should take note! So there’s a heap of reasons I like

this project. Let’s start with the basics, I really like how OCC and the stakeholders have approached this, there has been and will continue to be 100% transparency and consideration for the all aspects. So when I hear there is environmentally sensitive areas, that’s OK, there is; the trails won’t go there. The concept plan is just that, so far it’s a corridor where most likely under consideration for flora and fauna, gradient, soil type and trail concept the rider should get the best ride quality. If OCC have voted to go ahead then there will quite literally be a team of trail designers (and a botanist, or anyone else concerned) walking the proposed trails and defining the exact lines. So there’s a lot to do, but it’s all good, if the dream becomes reality there’s huge demand. Rotorua in New Zealand is similarly isolated from the major populous and attracts over 350,000 MTB visitors per annum! Think on that for a second… Orange would have a similar impact as Mount Panorama has for Bathurst. The proposed new Motels and apartments would be just the start. If you question the effectiveness of these goofballs on the bikes then have a little dig about, google Derby Tasmania, this sleepy little town was dying fast, almost gone, then kaboom, along came MTB’ing, its saviour. Now there’s new accommodation, new cafes, there’s two business’ set up to shuttle riders up the hill, they are booked out until February 2017! Forget anyone telling you there will be significant damage in the construction or use, there’s guidelines for the construction and how many MTB’ers knock down trees when riding? Who has been to Mount Annan, the Botanic Gardens near Campbeltown, who knew it hosted NSW’s biggest MTB event, the Jetblack 24hr. Mtb’ing goes hand in hand with nature, it’s not MTB or nature, it’s not MTB V Nature. It’s about coexisting and creating a sustainable legacy. I pray that our fine council have the foresight and the gumption to make the right call.

Her youngest daughter, Heidi was born at 32 weeks, she was 8 weeks premature, weighing in at 1.8kgs, this meant many months and sleepless nights in Canberra children’s hospital, away from their home, and away from her other children. At the time, it was thought that Heidi would not survive. Heidi was born with cerebral palsy,

Kyphoscoliosis, Profound hearing loss, Vision impairment, Larinygomalacia. She also has a severe food aversion with PEG feeding. But she is a fighter. 5 years later she fills the room with smiles and giggles that just melt you heart. Sonya does everything she can for her girls, she definitely deserves some recognition. MORE THAN WORDS DURING AUGUST, ANOTHER GROUP OF PARENTS AND CARERS COMPLETED THE ‘HANEN MORE THAN WORDS’ PROGRAM AT ODEEP.

peech Pathologist, Janelle Bowler facilitated the program which is specifically designed for parents and carers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The program equips parents and carers with valuable tools and strategies they can use to help their children communicate meaningfully with others and connect with the world around them. The strategies teach them how to adapt their communication style to encourage engagement and use of language for a variety of reasons such as greeting, sharing interests, requesting objects/actions, requesting help, asking and answering questions, and begin to help build social language skills needed for communication. Another great outcome of the More than Words Program is that it provides an opportunity for participants to connect with other parents and carers. This group really valued the chance they had to share feelings and experiences with others and meet new friends who understood their challenges. One participant said that before she did the program she alone and upset that they weren’t getting anywhere and after completing the program she felt completely relaxed and so happy with every little milestone reached and that she was able to connect with other families who understood.

Quick background: “Today, two families will be told the devastating news that their child has cancer. Imagine, for a second, if that was a child in your family.” Local lads Barry Swain and Jamie Lieben are putting their time, effort and money into making a difference. As competitors in this year’s Camp Quality esCARpade and with your help, Jamie and Barry hope to raise as much money as they can for this wonderful cause. Says Barry, “The first goal is $5000, which is merely the entry fee, anything after that is a bonus.” What Barry doesn’t mention is that both he and Jamie have to pay their own way for accommodation/food/car maintenance etc. At an assumed cost of around $2500, on top of the $5000 entry fee, their

overall financial commitment is a significant one! Added Jamie, “the kids have got the toughest part of the gig, all we want to do is help out a bit. If we have to spend a week together and a few bob to do that, well so be it.” The 2016 esCARpade the trek kicks off at Batemans Bay on the 21st October and makes its way to Griffith via Phillip Island. A total distance of 2289km with over 70% of the trip on dirt roads. The trip will take them a week. Along the way, the 80 or cars and competitors visit schools to raise further awareness.

UPDATE Barry and Jamie are still around $2500 short but, thanks to the Rapid Relief Team, are holding a BBQ at Old Woolworths carpark Saturday 01 October from 9am3pm as a last ditch attempt to raise a few more dollars. on the day, Barry and Jamie will be selling raffle tickets on the day with all proceeds from both the raffle and the BBQ going to Camp Quality.

25 YEARS OF ESCARPADE Camp Quality’s esCarpade is celebrating its 25th year. Participants, fondly known as esCarpadians, raise a minimum of $5,000 per car to Camp Quality in order to embark on the week-long drive covering thousands of miles to spread the Camp Quality cheer and put smiles on the faces of kids who are living with cancer. These dedicated and hardworking fundraisers spend all year raising money to attend the event, and last year’s highest individual fundraiser raised over $70,000! It’s not a rally or a race but an adventure fuelled by fun, mateship, and laughter. Throughout the journey, esCarpadians drive their animated automobiles (which must be at least 20 years old) through rural towns, stopping to lend a hand in local communities and visiting schools with Camp Quality’s Primary School Education Program to dispel common myths and misconceptions surrounding cancer. Over the years, esCarpade has clocked up over 70,000km, driven through 285 Aussie towns and has raised over $15million for kids and their families who are affected by cancer. BOOMING ACROSS WESTERN NSW

he ‘Be a Bosom Buddy Salon’ Project is booming across Western NSW with over 20 hair salons across Bathurst, Orange and Dubbo joining forces with BreastScreen NSW, in a project that will encourage women to have life-saving mammograms. ’ve always felt uneasy with society’s preoccupation with constantly wanting more ‘stuff’. While consumerism helps create jobs, it’s also the reason behind most of the environmental issues we have today. Just think about the plethora of plastic garbage bags, water bottles and other cheap disposable goods with builtin obsolescence that lead to a ‘throw away’ mentality. Not to mention the fact that Australians own an incredible 0.57 passenger vehicles per person. Items that once were considered luxuries – televisions, mobile phones, and computers – have now become necessities. Consumerism is almost impossible to escape, and despite the fact that most of us mean well, it’s becoming more apparent to me lately that I too am a victim of the insidious little bugger that is consumerism. I do small things to try and do my part. For years while many people were sporting their shiny new iPhones, I was still walking around with my completely uncool flip phone, which couldn’t receive MMS. Was it really necessary to upgrade just so I could see other people’s photos? Of course not! But when my flip phone eventually died, I did decide to purchase something a little ‘schmancy’. It had all the bells n’ whistles. Oh, and then there’s my Mac computer. My skin crawls when I hear myself talk about it. I never really wanted a Mac, but people kept telling me how exceptionally good they are. I’m using it now and wondering what makes them so darn good? I type stuff —and voila!—words appear on the screen. I’d like to know if they really are better quality that other laptops, or if I just like being one of the cool kids with that big ostentatious apple

icon on the back of my computer. Even I’m not sure. For a while there I made a stand with my clothing. I refused to purchase anything with a designer label on it, because the quality of the goods were exactly the same. And how ridiculous to pay extra money to do someone else’s marketing for them? But then sometimes you see something with a label that’s just so darn nice, and I really like Doc Martens… Oh, and I should mention the fact that I constantly —almost every time I go to the grocery shop—forget my ecofriendly shopping bags. I reuse the plastic bags, so I guess that’s something. And if you don’t use the plastic bags from the store you have to buy your own plastic bags to line garbage bins because there aren’t really any alternatives, are there? If there are, I’m not aware of them. In the day-to-dayness of life, it’s easy enough to forget about how our consumerism contributes to our environmental issues. I’m sure I’m not the only one. Heck, the fact that the Paris Climate Conference resulted in a plan to limit global warming to below 2 degrees is a prime example of really not giving a toss. “How about we let the world fall to bits, but we just make sure it happens slowly?”

THIS MONTH WE WERE ALERTED TO A FAMILIAR FACE RECEIVING A VERY WORTHY CERTIFICATE OF RECOGNITION. 11-YEAR-OLD HAYDEN INNES RECEIVED THIS MONTHS, YOUTH OF THE MONTH AWARD LATE LAST WEEK. Waiting for the Mayor, Hayden couldn’t wipe the smile off his face – and rightly so! He was even lucky enough to wear the Mayoral chain. Mayor John Davis said, “Youth of the Month is about young people who make significant contributions to our community whether it be education, or whether it be in their free time. “We’ve had you nominated very sternly, the articles in OC Life were absolutely fantastic. What you do is tremendous and we hope you can continue to do so.” The Mayor added, “It’s amazing how a young person like Hayden can think up these ideas, that’s what the impressive part is, they are all his own ideas it’s not a case of someone told him to do this. I would like to say thank you on behalf of the community.” When asked if meeting the Mayor was everything he thought it would be, Hayden couldn’t wipe the smile off his face replying, “Yes!” “Thank you to Mum and Dad for always helping me, I am very proud.” Hayden’s work isn’t done yet, he has pitched an idea to his school, where the motto is ‘Deeds not Words’ and has asked for a ‘Deeds not Words week’ where students can make drawings or cards and send them off to nursing homes. Incredible Hayden, and very well deserved! MC

Dave Loew is an Australian cellist born in Kenya, from a fourth generation show business family, who has devoted his life to delivering music that has touched people’s lives worldwide through his passionate and warm cello playing. Loew has played in many of the great London orchestras as well as on countless film and pop sessions, from Superman to The Omen Trilogy, and in West end shows such as Song and Dance and Cats. He draws from all his experiences in his albums, crossing huge boundaries in music by combining his show business background with a focus on timeless classics. THE CICADA & THE PLUM The Cicada and the Plum is an exhibition which explores the transition of China from thousands of years ago to the modern day era. Strongly inﬂuenced by antique photographs of Chinese society, it reveals a culture steeped in tradition but on the verge of change. Artist Melissa Barbara

The Zonta Club of Orange annually runs an Antiques Fair in the Orange Function Centre as a fundraiser for local charities. On Tuesday September 13th, Zonta hosted a dinner and presentation of cheques to this year’s chosen charities: Housing Plus, Country Education Foundation, Breast Care Cushions, Birthing Kits Australia and Orange Family Support Service. A total of $13,000 was distributed among the charities for their work in the community. Zonta meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at a local restaurant. Avoiding disaster

Imagine you are walking beside a road. You hear a far off murmur. You look up and see a truck coming in your direction. You are off the road and safe, but you see someone in the middle of the road. At first, you just assume the person will hear or see and walk off the road for themselves. However, they do not appear to notice at all. So you call out. You talk to them at a normal volume. However, as

the truck gets closer you raise your voice. Will you run out and tackle them? Being a Christian is a bit like walking beside that road. The truck is the disaster that comes if you reject God. The Bible says that if we place our trust in Jesus, then we will avoid that disaster. Instead of judgement, there is the end of suffering and evil. So this is me, calling out to those of you still in the middle of the road. Avoid the truck and follow Jesus. It may not be socially polite to raise my voice, but it is far ruder to leave someone on the road with the truck approaching.
