Anzac Day has come and gone for another year and I just want to say again, how very proud I am of this town’s turnout for both the dawn service and then the march. The numbers show the level of respect and admiration we have for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and those who continue to serve. Thank you, one and all. It’s said in Orange that come Anzac Day, it’s time to turn on the heaters and get out the winter gear. That didn’t quite happen this year with absolutely glorious weather earlier this week and especially on Anzac Day. Let’s enjoy it while it lasts. It’s an extra big OC Life this week with lots of great reading, spectacular photos and plenty of other things to keep you entertained. Sure hope you enjoy what our team has put together for you. Among many other features,

our Alpaca Week feature and this week’s Story from the Heart of Orange are both worthy reads. But then again, so is everything else! Motocross NSW Junior State Titles Last weekend, OC Life attended the NSW Junior State Motocross titles, the two-day event aimed at the younger ages - nippers to 16 year olds. The track and the conditions produced some lucky skids and pure talent as both boys and girls raced as hard as they could to take home a title. Families travelled from as far as Griffith, Taree and Cessnock to participate in the day. Another fantastic effort also was that,this round saw the most numbers they had participate in the girlâ€™s race. Check out more of our photographs from the day on our Facebook page!

ANZAC— MAY WE NEVER FORGET

“I am 18 years old and I have lived in Orange my whole life, I left school at the end of year 11 to work within the family business at Willoughby’s Model Cars. I mainly do website updates and merchandising, but working in the collectors shop I started up a collection of my own, Pop Vinyl Figures. I currently have 180, and counting... and no room! Since leaving school, I have had a lot of time to think about what I want to do, and realised whilst indulging in anything creative will keep me happy, my dream is to do special effects makeup for the big screen. I recently gained my Cert 3 in beauty and have done Graduation makeup since, I mainly practice special effects on myself. I am also really into cake decorating, and have made many different types of cakes for my friends and family, including a Tardis, a tiger, a fairy garden and even a paint tin. I’m thinking about creating a Facebook page to start a little business, offering my makeup and cake decorating skills, along with selling a few artworks on the way, so keep your eye out for me!”

his time of year always gets me emotional. As, I hope it does, for many, many of you. My heart sang proud early Monday morning; with my arms wrapped protectively around my little fella, more from the cold wind than anything else, we stood with the multitudes of others, to pay our humble respects. Lest we forget. I have read, with some consternation, that there is a threat, a thought, a worry, that this day of ours will pale into insignificance and become ‘just another day off’. That thought angers me. It upsets me. More importantly —I think—it steels me. I am determined, now more than ever, to ensure that I pass on the significance of remembering to my children. I hope, that by doing so, they will do the very same to theirs so that this legacy, at least within my family, will live on. As I looked around Robertson Park in the dark light of dawn, I notice so many other parents in much the same pose as me, and it’s enough to bring a lump to my throat. These people too,

won’t let their kids forget. It seems as though this current generation of kids will never be allowed to forget; never be allowed to take this day for granted. We do not gather in the early hours to celebrate war. We gather to commemorate; to say thanks to those who have and those who do, fight for this country’s freedom and way of life. We stop to acknowledge the fallen and quietly thank them for the opportunities their ultimate sacrifice has given us. Lest we forget. We stop because on one horrible early morning, many years ago, our very best brave and very young men, the best of this nations stock, strode forth onto a foreign land effectively into a hail of bullets, to die for a cause some didn’t understand. On a deadly adventure side by side with their mates, their brothers, forging a reputation that lives on today. We stop to say thanks to those brave individuals who continue to defend our interests from those who would do us harm. We must NEVER forget! For me to get up early once a year to say thanks is the very least I can do. We WILL remember them—Lest we forget.

The 12 Inch Ruler

A WORTHY CAMPAIGN Stop it at the Start!

How long is your foot? If it’s 12 inches, maybe you could be the next PM, President or Head of State …

he metric system might be logical and easy to use, but it ruined a lot of the cool stuff about measurement. Furlongs, cubits, chains, fathoms and barleycorns have all but gone by the wayside this millennium. If we EVER get any decent rain out here, I can’t wait to again hear the use of points and inches again as we measure the precious drop—but apart from that, it’ll be all about metres, litres and kilos when we measure stuff. The kids doing their NAPLAN exams in a little while don’t know how easy they’ve got it. The origins of the ‘foot’ are varied and blurry. Historically the appendage at the end of your leg was used as the basis for this measure of length—and obviously that means that a classic foot was of different lengths across the cities and civilisations of the world in the ye olden day. In some places, they lined up 16 random people as they came out of church on a Sunday and measured their left foot—this gave the length of a rod or rood and was used to measure and survey land. 1/16th of this was then known as the foot. In Roman times, the feet of the leaders or wise and respected men were used as the measurement. Nero Drusus and the famous general Marcus Agrippa lent their paddle to be measured as the length of the time—hence the reference to the ‘ruler’, for a bit of wood 12 inches long (I’m stretching the connection a bit here, but you get the drift). Having a foot that is, well, a foot long does seem to be a bit of a stretch in a lot of cases. I just measured my (size 10) foot, and it’s only about 26/27 cm long—or less than 11 inches. We note that men were a lot

shorter back in ancient times, so it makes sense that their feet were probably littler, too. So, I’m agreeing with suggestions that the word foot is actually a synonym for the word shoe or boot. With a ridiculous couple of months ahead of us regarding campaigning for our federal election, the circus of the U.S. elections, and the ol’ chestnut of who’s gonna take over from Queen Elizabeth now that she’s a nonagenarian—we could probably do worse than adopt a ‘who fits the glass slipper?’ kind-of strategy to choose our next leaders of the free world. With what the pollies here and overseas have served up to us over the past 6 months, it makes as much sense as any other method. It worked for Prince Charming. Going back up the page to where I referred to a foot really being a shoe … I have just measured my R.M. boot and it’s almost spot on to exactly 12 inches. Yippee! Maybe I could be the next ruler of this fine nation. Maybe they could make me the first Aussie Head of State once we decide to part ways with the English monarchy as our ruler. I’d make a lot of good decisions in my first week as Head Honcho (refer to past columns for my opinions on using a mobile phone whilst driving, or what should happen to adults who abuse children, etc.). I’d also make Australia Day and ANZAC float each year so they occurred on a Friday—giving us two more long weekends to savour (discuss). And if anyone questioned my decisions, I could put my palm up and say “Talk to the boot, because I’m the ruler”.

This week marked the launch of a national campaign on how disrespect towards girls can grow into something more serious. Stop it at the start aims to help families, teachers, sports coaches and others challenge their own views about respectful relationships and gender equality, and start a conversation with young people. Launched in Canberra by the Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter, and Minister for Women, Senator Michaelia Cash, the campaign is jointly funded by the Commonwealth, state and territory governments. The statistics are shocking. Every week, a woman is

murdered by her current or former partner, and one in three women has been a victim of physical or sexual violence, since the age of 15, perpetrated from someone known to them. Often we don’t realise where it begins – with the attitudes and behaviours our kids develop as they grow up. This campaign is about

NSW GOVERNMENT GRANTS TO HELP PRESERVE MILITARY HISTORY The community is being encouraged to apply for individuals grants of up to $60,000 to preserve important pieces of local military history and put them back on display. The funding might be used to upgrade or install war memorial plaques, to refurbish community halls used by veterans groups or to restore and display honour roles with the names of men and women who fought and died in war. I know there’s so much

important military history in our towns that has fallen into disrepair or been targeted by vandals and is in danger of being lost. We need to ensure that our war memorials continue to stand proud and strong. It is anticipated that applications will open in May and an independent panels will then assess the projects. ORANGE HOSPITAL PARKING UPDATE

The Huntley Road entrance to the hospital will be opened as soon as Orange City Council completes the internal road upgrades. All of the relevant parties have paid Council to carry out that work. The timing of the work is in Council’s hands. The election commitment to increase parking remains and once Huntley Road is open, a decision will be made as to whether the upgrade will be by way of parking station or open air parking.

MITCHELL HIGHWAY RECEIVES UPGRADE

Andrew recently inspected the upgrades and is pictured with RMS Site Supervisor, John Hill.

The NSW Government has allocated $468,000 for essential maintenance work along the Mitchell Highway in Orange to provide a stronger, longer lasting and safer road. The work has included resurfacing and line marking, and has been carried out from the Woodward Street roundabout through to the Peisley Street intersection. The roadworks are still underway and we appreciate the community’s patience while this essential maintenance work is carried out.

LATEST JOBS FIGURES OUT

The Australian Bureau of Statistics released the latest jobs statistics last Thursday, which shows job growth in the Central West up 7,400 and the unemployment rate dropping to 5.6%, which is below the national average. The Central West Jobs Action Plan has so far secured $20 million in investment, including 81 jobs in Orange. Of the 164 employees that left Electrolux last year, only 15 are still seeking employment which shows that the massive Electrolux worker re-training program has been very successful with 93 employees finding work locally and only 11 leaving Orange to find work elsewhere.

The men and women who have served Australia through the years didn’t ask for much. One thing they did ask however is that we remember them. On ANZAC Day each year, we reaffirm that sacred commitment all over Australia. It is also a chance for us all to think about our service men and women who are deployed all around the world right now. I joined with over 100 hundred Toogong residents for a moving dawn service, just west of Cudal, and then travelled on to the Commemorative Service in Orange, which saw record crowds, 101 years on from the landing at Gallipoli. It was particularly wonderful to see such a turnout of young people this ANZAC Day. Thank you to everyone involved in ceremonies around the Orange Electorate.

We can’t wait to see the prom dresses, shoulder pads and crimped hairstyles. It’s going to be quite a sight, all underneath a big mirror ball. I’m pretty sure there might be a few eighties icons, or lookalikes at the least, in attendance.” Megan Whiley, also on the Organising Team, explains how Blossoms Rescue was selected as this year’s ball charity. “The ball is an independent community social event organised by hospital staff. This year we have chosen Blossoms as they are a small, local charity that does fantastic work and will benefit greatly from the modest amount we are likely to raise.” The headline entertainment for the event will be Perth-based retro specialist DJ Tomás Ford. Also an altcabaret artist, Tomás has taken his allrequest retro show to sold out seasons at Edinburgh Fringe, Adelaide Fringe, Brighton Fringe, Rottofest and Fringe World, and has enjoyed smash hit runs in clubs in Perth, Prague, Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart and Karratha. There will also be a massive raffle on

the night, with prizes including double passes to Oz Comic-Con Sydney and signed memorabilia from Supanova Pop Culture Expo, plus vouchers for local restaurants and shops. There will also be a photo booth for patrons to capture the moment. Megan Whiley adds, “We are so happy about the raffle prizes we have received so far. Thank you to the business owners who have supported the Ball.” Laura Ferguson from Blossoms Rescue can’t wait to hit the dancefloor and is very pleased that her familyrun charity has been chosen to receive the proceeds from the Ball. “Blossoms operates completely on donations from the community. Every dollar from the event will go towards vet services, food and maternity equipment for our current and future rescues. Thanks go to the Ball organisers for their support and the boost to our profile and community awareness as a local charity.” So are you ready to party like it’s 1989? his is a Community Awareness Program conducted by the Northern Rotary District 9700 involving the Rotary Clubs of Orange Calare, Orange North, Bathurst East, Blayney, Boorowa, Condobolin, Cowra, Grenfell, Lake Cargelligo, Molong, Oberon, and Parkes in the Central West region of NSW. Bowelscan kits will be available from most pharmacies in Orange

throughout May 2016. Bowelscan kits are also available at the pharmacies in Canowindra, Millthorpe and Molong. When purchasing a Bowelscan kit, it is most important to read the instructions within the envelope on how to take a sample. The Bowelscan kit requires NO dietary requirements and only 2 samples need submitting. It is important that the completed

test be POSTED in the Reply Paid Envelope to the central laboratory in Sydney. That laboratory will send out the test results either by email or post. The ‘home test’ kit costs only $15 and is used for detecting the possibility of hidden blood in the bowel motions. The small charge of $15 covers the cost of the kit, testing and sending results back to those participating.

So what should you do If you are over 40, it is recommended that the Bowelscan test be conducted on an annual basis. You will be notified about the result of the test and your nominated Doctor will also be informed if the result is positive. Your confidentiality is assured. Please note that it is NOT a test for all types of cancer.

In Australia bowel cancer is the most common internal cancer affecting one in 21 adults, both men and women. The incidence of bowel cancer increases if there is a family history in close relatives. The risk begins at the age of 40 doubling every five years to the age of 60 when it gets more frequent. Most people are unaware that they may have this form of cancer. If bowel cancer is not detected early and treatment is left too late, it can be as vicious as any other cancer.

This just goes to show that environmental sustainability is close to everyone’s heart, and we’re proud to be increasing the festival’s green credentials.” The F.O.O.D Week committee intend to ramp up the festival’s sustainability approach a notch further for next year,

THIS JOB AFFORDS ME SOME UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES.

One such opportunity arose last week when I was thrown the number of Penrith’s in-form halfback, Jamie Soward. As usual, I had no clue what to talk to him about but rather than worry, I just winged it and 20 minutes later, we said our goodbyes. What made it harder was that a few nights earlier, Soward had almost single-handedly orchestrated his sides win against the Roosters. I wasn’t exactly feeling the love toward him. Ever the professional though, I pushed on. Many people have an opinion of Jamie Soward, but I am happy to report that I found him to be nothing but a pleasure to deal with. He’s articulate and measured in his responses, possibly from being burnt on more than a few occasions, but certainly affable and easy to speak to. To break the ice with Sowie, I brought up the trip he made to Kokoda in 2014 with what were effectively his very new team-mates. On that trip was Orange’s own Brad Draper and early on day one, Sowie and Brad developed a friendship born of the difficulties the Kokoda trip can offer.

Brad tells me you pretty much saved him on day one at Kokoda. The trip wasn’t really designed as a team building experience but it quickly became one. For me, I wanted to discover some things about myself that I could maybe transfer into my footy; on the field or at training, when you see someone down, you got to give them a hand. That first day at Kokoda, Brad was struggling and I just went back and helped him up. We struck up a pretty good friendship from that. We helped each other get through the tougher moments – it’s not life and death – but we all need to reach out every now and then. It was pretty funny, Brad was struggling and we’d only walked about 500 meters and it was day one!

Do you guys enjoy coming out to the regional areas? Absolutely. For me, growing up in Wagga, playing my first senior footy down there, it’s always nice to get to places like Bathurst, and mix with the kids, get a chance to re-live the childhood memories of wanting to be in the first grade side. Bathurst is only up the road for us so it’s a good trip. And the support is always good, they’re hoping to crack the 10,000 mark this year. Yeah, always. This is our third year up there, and we are 1 and 1 (Panthers lost to the Sharks in 2014 and beat the Titans in 2015) and the more support we can get the better. We’ve done some great things in the community over the last two years and we love being up there. Hopefully the crowd comes out and drives us toward a good performance. And you’re right into American sport? I am! Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics. That’s why I’ve got ‘33’ tattooed on the back of my biceps! It’s a passion that helps take me away from footy mentally. After footy I would love a career in the media and I need to be across all sports. And Jarryd Hayne in the NFL? I’ve not followed it as closely as a lot of the reporters but I know and appreciate what he has done and what an achievement it was. He has changed the landscape for Aussie sport, put us on the map a bit. He has put the NRL brand out there in a big way and that can only be a good thing. I wish him the best. Jamie Soward is a pretty private guy and we touched on quite a few other, somewhat sensitive subjects and his honestly blew me away, I thank him for giving me that. Big thanks to Sowie and the Panthers organisation for the opportunity and I wish them all the best this weekend in Bathurst. JS

THE QUALITY OF FIBRE that the overseas manufacturers seek for high fashion and luxury products. We produce some of the best quality alpaca fibre in Australia. The Bumble Hill herd, located on Mount Canobolas near Orange, comprises mainly white huacaya alpacas but there are a few coloured animals to demonstrate the many marvellous fleece colours possible in alpaca. There are some suri alpacas too, although our main suri herd is located at Mangrove Mountain. Our Autumn birthing is complete and there are some cute crias to see. It only takes a couple of minutes of conversation with Adam Harvey before it’s blindingly apparent: he’s a genuinely top bloke. A warm-hearted family man, he talks about his amazing wife of 15 years, and the importance of not becoming one of “those” musicians who lets the fame get to him. “I’ve never been wired that way, but unfaithfulness is rampant in the music industry. I don’t really get it. Booze has always been my vice”. He speaks fondly of his two kids, and in typical teenager style, his eldest briefly interrupts us. He’s 14 years old, has a girlfriend, and perhaps as an “in your face!” to dad, has chosen rap as his favourite music genre. “Rather than ground him

when he misbehaves, my wife makes him come along to one of my shows”, he laughs. Born in Geelong, Adam and his family now reside in what he refers to as “Hillbilly Heaven”, on the Central Coast, with the likes of Casey Chambers, Beccy Cole and Troy Cassar-Daley. On his latest tour, Harvey’s Bar, Adam brings a little piece of his beautiful home along with him.

On Tuesday April 5th, the Orange Come Together Choir held an Open day at the Orange Regional Conservatorium. This was an opportunity for family, guest and general public to gain and insight the activities of the Choir and to experience some of the regular activities of the conservatorium. The Come together Choir is open to anyone that enjoys singing, and is directed by Samantha Bartholomeusz. The group has out grown the Senior Citizens Hall and now meets at 10 am in the Orange Regional Conservatorium on Tuesdays.

Sunday 10th of April saw a fundraiser held for Jane Adams who is suﬀering from cancer. Friends and family were there to support Jane and help her ﬁnancially as she battles with cancer. Bellagio Day Spa was busy with face painting, a kid’s crazy hair stand, eyebrow waxing and men’s haircuts with some very colorful cupcakes; all funds raised on the day will help Jane and her family. We wish Jane all the best and big congrats to those closest to her that stepped in to help get the fundraising underway.

ANZAC DAY 2016 ORANGE DID ITSELF PROUD ONCE AGAIN THIS YEAR WITH A MASSIVE TURNOUT TO THE MARCH As you can see, so many people came out to commemorate and say ‘thanks’. It’s fantastic to see so many smiling kids enjoying the day and learning the signiﬁcance of it. Big thanks to the schools and the staﬀ too, as school hadn’t actually returned from holidays and here they were, giving their time to ensure our children enjoy and understand just what Anzac Day represents.

Big thanks to OC Life’s very own Melise Coleman for getting so many great shots and thanks also to Eyetrix Productions Troy Pearson for his awesome contributions. There is a time... It has been said, “There is a time that turns a corner, and everything this side of it is new.” Such a time is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christianity says that the universe turned a corner then, and everything has changed. Why do we claim that this one event is so remarkable? Death is absolutely universal. Nothing in all creation escapes it. We read of people who are “brought back” by doctors, but we know that they will eventually die. But Jesus rose, never to

die again! This is astonishing in its own right. It has never happened before or since, to any living thing. But there is more. The Bible makes clear that death is the final consequence when we (all of us) rebel against or just ignore God. There are plenty of other consequences, but death is the final, inescapable one. Since Jesus rose, things can never be the same again. He defeated death, and so shall all who believe in him. The universe turned a corner, and nothing is the same again.

Naomi has been playing Netball since she was 5 years old. She loves the game because of the movement involved. She currently plays for Nemsis in Division 5 as part of the Orange Netball Association competition. She can play any position on the court but enjoys play as centre forward the most. It has been most rewarding for her to see her daughter also play netball and to enjoy it as much as she does. Her sporting Hero is Kim Green of the NSW Swifts.

The victory saw Nicolas “Fat” Bennett bag 5 goals with a first half hat-trick, showing he could score with his right foot as well as his left, unlike his flatmate who can’t score at all. Craig Sugden was in the goals too, netting a hat-trick.

Several other players took the opportunity to shake off the curse of the notorious “nudie run”, with Justin Splithof scoring from a neat header and Steven Cooper finding the back of the net with a raking drive. It was a three way tie for players’ player with Matt Burgess, “Fat” Bennett and Jack Sinclair all receiving mentions. In other games Waratah City (A) were victorious over Waratah Wolfpack (B) 10-1. Elsewhere, the wonderful Waratah’s women’s side came out on top against the Oberon Wolves, winning their game 6-4. Jessica Thurn, Teigan Mcmiles and April Rich all got on the scoresheet. Big week for all things velo; Orange is host to the State Masters Road Championships and the toughest of the tough Triathletes head to Port Macquarie who again hosts the Ironman and 70.3 Tri events. The Masters Road Championships is looking to bring over 370 cyclists to the district. The event has three disciplines; Saturday the roads around Molong will be alive with tar loving cyclists for varying length road races. Sunday the attention turns to Narrambla for the Criterium races and Monday the tried and tested Forest Rd, Airport, Huntley Rd loop will form the route for those who love the race of truth, the Individual Time Trial. Goodluck to all the locals representing, well done to the organisers and volunteers. The annual Orange Triathlete pilgrimage to ‘Port’ for the Ironman is on again. The hundreds of hrs running the streets, swimming laps and pedalling are in the bank, this week is all taper, a few little efforts and small hours of training seem like a different world to the what has become the norm. This Sundays full Ironman Australia race covers a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride, then a 42km run. Port is now in its 31st year and is an iconic race on the Australian triathlon calendar. As usual there will be a host of Ironman debutants and some maddies that for them the prospect of finishing with a marathon isn’t overly daunting?! We wish all the best to the Orange Piranha triathletes heading to Port Macquarie. Around 100 riders took to the line for the inaugural Central West MTB Interclub Series race; Rydal was the venue and the track and conditions were fantastic. The series is looking to capture riders of all abilities and ages and provides categories to suit. Well done to all the Orange MTB crew who attended and to the big winner Bathursts Dan Watson, Kudos to the Central Tablelands MTB Club for a great trail and event. The furore over Sam Burgess’ tackle on the Broncos Joe Ofahengaue is further indication the game is a shadow of the one we once knew. Bloke dives on a loose ball, doesn’t attempt to get up and the defender is supposed to just pop a hand on him? Puh-leeezzze. Next thing we’ll be expecting Burgess to help him up and dust him off before politely requesting that he play the ball. Apparently the penalty went against Burgess because the rules state some type of contrary conduct… well, how long has it been acceptable for a bloke to just lay there and take a voluntary tackle in Rugby League? Surely that goes against the game too, and if it does, then why wasn’t the first offence penalised? It’s a stretch, I know, but it’s not that long a bow to draw is it? Many have stated Many have stated it was nothing it was nothing but but a cheap-shot on a player laying a cheap-shot on a prone and defenceless. That player CHOSE to lay there like a Muppet player... who’d just had his strings cut, he could easily have gotten up and then possibly ran the length of the field and scored. Burgess jammed down hard with his shoulder leading the way but I could see nothing wrong with it. Burgess got penalised – which I still think is harsh – but what if, in the motion of effecting that legal manoeuvre, Burgess managed to dislodge the ball from Ofahengaue and therefore gained his side possession once again? If I was coaching, I would be instructing my players to do exactly what Burgess did. If a changeover happened as a result, it could change the course of a match. What is the game coming to when a player gets penalised for tackling someone? It is a sometimes brutal contact sport; and please don’t hide behind the “it was unnecessary” line; yes, Burgess could have placed a hand on Ofahengaue to complete the tackle, but he was still within his rights not too. Until that changes, good luck to him. Maybe next week, when a player dives on a loose ball, they’ll actually try to get to their feet.

The Semi is set to roll out. Parramatta’s very good Semi Radradra has been picked to represent Australia… and that’s good. He certainly deserves a representative jumper… of some type. What I don’t like about it, never actually have liked it as a matter of fact, is that surely a player picked to represent this country should first be able to qualify for a state? I know, I know – Origin footy is just that, Origin. Unless you’re Greg Inglis, Adrian Lam, Toni Carroll, Brad Thorn, James Tamou, Lote Tuqiri etc. My point is this; it is ludicrous that the qualifying rules we set down to represent our country are NOT as harsh as those we set forth to represent a state. It makes a mockery of the Australian emblem, I reckon. Now, before you go nuts at me, I’m in no way suggesting we ease the rules for state qualifying; rather, I’m suggesting that the rules qualifying one to wear the national jumper be tightened. If we can somehow bring both into alignment so that people can represent one of the Rugby League playing states PRIOR to being considered for selection for the Australian jumper, then great! Believe it or not Fiji has its own team that plays on the international stage and I have no doubt that that nation would be much better served by its players playing in their nations colours. BUT… if a player, born wherever, so chooses to first become qualified for a particular state; then and only then, should that player be able to be considered for the National jumper. I don’t even care if that player, like Semi, declares he wants to represent Victoria; at least then he has declared an allegiance, one way or another, to a particular part of this country. Whilst on Victoria, one wonders how Queensland will twist the rules when that southern state finally produces a very good footballer of its own… At least though, this hypothetical person will have been born of this country and therefore able to qualify for higher honours. I want to see the very best footballers playing the very best version of Rugby League; by definition, allowing players to play for the national jumper but NOT qualify for a state jumper, diminishes the national emblem. I don’t like that.

The soccer! It wasn’t good, it was great! If you’ve not heard by now, Brisbane Roar and the Western Sydney Wanderers faced off in an epic, history making match over the weekend. Short version is this: Brisbane raced to a 3-0 lead inside the first 25 minutes. They were cruising, doing it as easy as you can on the Soccer field. Three goals hard enough to manage over multiple weeks sometimes, let alone in 25 minutes. But the Wanderers, apparently, are made of much sterner stuff. Firstly, Romeo Castelen scored. That seemed to fire up the Wanderers. Bredan Santalab then scored and the crowd began to rumble. When Castelen score two more in quick succession, Parramatta Stadium went nuts! The Roar players looked stunned, leading by three one minute and trailing by one seemingly moments later. Of course both sides were playing for a spot in the GF against Adelaide this week. Brisbane rallied, Jamie MacLaren scored, and the game went into extra time at 4-4. The crowd lifted and the Wanderers players responded. Brisbane seemed to tire and in the 102nd minute, the Wanderers Dario Vidosic punched in the winner. It was an incredible match. The result meaning that the Wanderers will take on Adelaide in what will be a first championship for whichever team wins. How great it is to be able to speak of Soccer in such glowing terms. Amazing that when they simply get down to business and play the game, it’s fantastic to watch. The atmosphere at the ground must have been incredible. With Rugby League’s current rules turning more and more people away from the sport at an alarming rate, both Soccer and the AFL’s marketing people must be rubbing their hands with glee. Matches like the Wanderers v Roar one might not happen often, but when they do, the other football codes MUST sit up and take notice. Can the Wanderers take out the big one this Sunday? After that confidence building win, I can’t see anything stopping them.

Randy heard one very clever and knowledgeable spectator declare it was a massacre! KKK We take on Forbes this weekend at home and training again has been excellent. Colts, 2’s and 1st grade are again looking strong and our social committee are looking at throwing a toga party afterwards in the clubhouse. Would be great to see you all there. LAST WEEK OC LIFE ATTENDED THE ‘TRAIN LIKE A SWIFT’ WORKSHOP HOSTED AT THE OUTSTANDING PCYC FACILITY. The School Holiday program is for girls ages between 12-16 years old and was run by The Sydney Swifts very own, Stephanie Wood and Abbey McCulloch. Before they got down to the practical, the 50 girls in attendance sat for two hours of theory where they were spoken to by a nutritionist and physiotherapist. They explained to the girls the best way to fuel their bodies and what to do before or after a game with recovery. The girls were then split into two groups where they then worked on their footwork, ball work and defence with the Swift girls. This was the first year the program had been brought out to regional areas and I think it is safe to say the girls enjoyed every second of it! He then released it back into the water and watched it for some time to ensure it was OK.
