At the beginning of the year, 18 month old Zac Robinson was diagnosed with a rare immune deficiency called Hyper IGM Syndrome. The condition doesn’t allow his little body to produce antibodies to fight infections, and he now requires chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant as soon as possible in an effort to give him the best start to life as possible. Zac’s mother Karen said it’s been a tough time since his diagnosis, with the family having to travel to Sydney’s Westmead Hospital every month for treatments. “At first the Doctors thought we would need a bone marrow transplant at around seven years of age, but unfortunately he hasn’t responded well to treatments so
it needs to happen as soon as possible,” she explained. “No one wants to have a sick child... you’d rather yourself be sick than your child. It’s very emotional.” The Robinson family remain optimistic though, and are pleased to report that things are starting to fall into place. Just this week a matching Bone Morrow donor was found in Great Britain. “It’s very difficult to find a match,” Karen said. “But they’ve found a male from Great Britain who just needs to have a final few test.” “If everything goes to plan, Zac will be able to have his operation at the beginning of October.” To help the family with the ongoing financial costs, a fundraising luncheon will be held at the Robin Hood Hotel on Sunday, September 16 starting at 12noon.
Everyone is welcome to the family friendly event, with tickets including lunch, as well as beer, wine and soft drinks. The day will have an emphasis on fun, with a jumping castle provided for the kids as well as numerous raffles drawn on the day. Some of the great prizes up for grabs include a Westinghouse Fridge donated by Electrolux, a Weber BBQ donated by Solarco/Climate King, and a general Car Service donated by Steve Kay Automotive. “Our family would like to extend a warm invitation to everyone in the community; it’s going to be a lovely day and a great chance to help our little boy Zac,” Karen smiled. The Robinson family wanted to thank Warick Marshall from the Robin Hood Hotel for putting on the event, and all those who donated to the raffles. Tickets are Adults: $70, 13-17 years: $20, and under 12 years are free. Tickets can be purchased on the day or prior to the event at the Robin Hood.

BY BOB HOLLAND Well , Election Day is all but upon us and I have to admit that I’m terrified that some of the wrong people might get voted in. For anyone interested, let me share some of my concerns— Anyone who has been following Derek Maitland’s reports on our online news service at www. orangenewsnow.com.au will have grave concerns about the suitability of some of the candidates and in particular any of those who until recently sat on the executive of the Orange Ratepayers Association. Our dealings with this group and my personal experience with members of the former executive has done nothing to convince me that they deserve a place on our Council. Their conduct generally and their negative attitude towards the Council can be fairly clearly gauged by reading Derek’s reports on Orange News Now or local newspaper stories in the archives on the CWD website. Disagreeing with Council, its decisions or its methods is one thing, but any fair minded person would have a more balanced view of things and occasionally give them credit where credit’s due. In the case of the people I’m talking about I’ve heard nothing but complaints about almost everything they comment on. If that’s a sample of how they intend to conduct themselves if elected to Council, then heaven help us. The last thing we need is a council hindered by one or more serial antagonists.

I’m also very concerned about the way certain groups have been put together and the way the preferences may be distributed. It’s pretty obvious to me that Brian Wood’s Group and Ron Gander’s Group are in the same camp and working to help each other. More concerning to me is that high profile candidate Russell Turner was reported in the CWD to be in a preferences triangle with Ron Gander’s and Brian Wood’s Groups. I personally told Russell that I’d give him my number 1 or 2 vote, but that was before I heard of this preference arrangement. Sad to say, I have no choice now but to leave Russell Turner out of my vote. It’s not for me to tell people how they should vote, but I have written this in the hope that people will do their homework and check out the history of the people I’ve referred to. I simply want to encourage people to be sure and be well informed about who they’re voting for. What I will do however is suggest to anyone who has concerns about where the preferences of any Group they are considering voting for may go, to opt for voting below the line and thereby selecting the candidates you prefer in the order you prefer them. If you take this option, you are required to number at least 6 squares numbering them 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in the order of your preference. You can number more 7, 8, 9 and so on if you prefer, but six is sufficient to make your vote a formal vote.

Win signed Justice Crew Jocks! Legacy received a $20 000 donation from Orange Ex-Services’ Club. Lifeline Central West received a $20 000 donation from Orange Ex-Services’ Club.
A pillar of our community The Orange Ex-Services’ Club further positioned itself as a pillar in the community last week, when they donated over $121,000 to various local community groups, schools, and individual students. CHRIS BENNETTS Over $114,000 was donated through the ClubGrANTS scheme, in which local organisations and charities had the opportunity to submit project funding applications for consideration by the local ClubGrANTS Committee, which included
representatives from Orange City Council, NSW Council of Social Services, Orange City Bowling Club and Orange ex-Services’ Club. recipients of this significant and wonderful donation included Lifeline, Legacy, Orange Aboriginal Medical Service and Orange City Learner Driver Program, just to name a few. Over $7,000 was donated to all local
schools, who each received an annual $200 library donation as well as five students from local high schools receiving a $500 music and education scholarship. The Orange ex-Services’ Club president, Peter Single, said the Club was proud to be able to help the community in such a manner. “It is an amazing feeling to be able to assist so many worthy community organisations and schools every year,” he said. “The annual project further enhances our position of ‘Our Club, Our Community, Our Commitment”. From its beginning on September 1st 2010 the ClubGrANTS scheme has provided $66.2 million in funds across New South Wales.

Going for gold! Photos BY ChRIs BENNEtts James Sheahan Catholic High School held its annual Academic Olympics in the school hall recently. The event is styled on an Olympic decathlon, but instead of activities of an athletic nature, all the challenges are designed to test lateral and creative thinking. This year twenty-five teams from both State and Catholic schools from all over the Central West entered the competition. They gathered together to compete in events such as Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Strategy, Forensics, Engineering, Maths, Drama, English, General Knowledge, and Music. The day is run entirely by the students in the James Sheahan Catholic High School Year 9 and 10 extension classes. These students designed the questions as well as organised all aspects of the day to ensure that it ran smoothly. Well done to everyone involved!

Memorable days in history By Suellen Milham It’s 1969 and astronaut, Neil Armstrong, is walking on the moon acknowledging a big step in human achievement. It’s 2000 years ago and Jesus of Nazareth is walking on the earth declaring that the kingdom of God is near and people need to repent; he is about to die for the sins of humanity. It’s now 2012 and Neil Armstrong has died. there are nine people living who have also stepped onto the moon and many more who remember this momentous event but Neil Armstrong won’t be visiting the moon again. Jesus also died. that’s what he came to do. Jesus, however, came back to life after three days and continues to live and rule the world. there are millions of people who follow him. His time on earth was a significant event in human history. Jesus said that he would come back and when he makes his return visit everyone will know about it. Jesus won’t be coming to die but to judge. We need to be ready and not still thinking about going to the moon.

Thanks from kaluumn Dear Phot oNews I just thought I would write in and say thank you to everyone for all the support I am getting from the community. It means so much to me when I read the letters and articles about me; it makes me very happy that people think so highly of my talent and my work. A big thank you also to PhotoNews for taking the time and interest in me, it really means so much. I would also like to send a big thanks to my friend Derek Maitland who has supported me from the first time we met and has given me so much self esteem and encouragement. He has shown me so much kindness and support and he is a very nice man. It fills me with so much pride when I am in town with my dad, and members of the community come up to me and congratulate me on my work, people

who I have never met, so thank you so much for taking the time to do that. It really makes my day. I would also like to thank, Dr McCarthy and the other two people who bought my art works, “What lies beneath” and “Tainted view” at the “Fire and Ice” festival. Both works mean a lot to me and I really hope that they will bring you as much joy and pleasure, as they did me in creating them. I have actually also recently commissioned three new pieces and I am currently working on my entries for the National Field day art competition in October. I hope you all can make it down to see them and enjoy all the talent the central west has to offer. As a community we have many talented artists and they all deserve a big congratulations for the work they entered in the “Fire and Ice” competition. Every single piece was amazing and I am sure not only the Orange field day but also the up and coming “Slow summer” exhibition in January 2013 will be just as amazing and I can’t wait to be a part of them. Thanks again to everyone for your letters and support and I hope I can do something worthy of your attention again soon. I would also like to thank you for your support with my health issues. I have been through a fair bit that’s true however not as much as some, and I do not let it define me. I am just me, Kal, regardless of my health issues; I am no different to any other 11 year old boy. I thought I’d take this opportunity to let you know that I am on the mend in a very real way. My eye is coming good and with the treatment I am getting it looks like it will come

sign of The Times Dear Bob, Your readers may be interested to hear how far some people will go to get elected or to prevent others from getting elected in the upcoming council election. Myself and at least one other candidate I know, with permission, placed corflute advertising signs in the front yards of our friends and supporters to help with our publicity for the election. Earlier this week several of these signs went missing. For this to happen people would have to be under the cover of darkness, had to scale fences and trespass to remove them. It’s only about small advertising signs, but it’s a sad indictment on where our society is at these days.

Alright I’ll see what we can do. What advice would you like to give people? Work hard, look after yourself with exercise... and early to bed, early to rise. Getting out of bed early isn’t easy though, is it?! I was a jockey so I’m used to getting out of bed early. So you like the ponies, have you got any tips? Yeah, I have got a few... but I’m not telling you! Does anything get under your skin these days? No, I’ve got nothing against anything... just waking up every day is a bonus.
How are you? I’m ok... I’ve just got out of hospital, I broke my hip. That’s no good! Is everything alright now? Yes I’m on the mend... I’ve just got to keep doing my physio. Any advice for people? Look after your health; don’t do anything to harm it because it’s your greatest asset. Get exercise and don’t drink too much. Also you should get the best education you can. I’m a Doctor of Social Science and taught computers at TAFE for ten years. What do you like about Orange? It’s a friendly town and I like that the streets are lined with beautiful trees. Anything annoy you? Too many ads on TV! I don’t mind the funny ones, but not the stupid ones that just play over and over.

Travelling through Kakadu National Park recently, our group of Orange residents noted that a Care Flight Medical Simulator (Medi Sim) was proudly sporting the Orange City Council logo as one of its major sponsors. On making ourselves known to the Medi Sim staff, we were given a personal guided tour of the unit. Care Flight Medi Sim Coordinator, Colin Brown, said the unit was in Kakadu fulfilling a contract to provide high level medical rescue and retrieval techniques for the National Park staff. Colin also said they were very grateful for the support that Orange gives the unit as it enables them to provide training to a variety of remote medical and health professional together with other organisations such as Rural Fire Services and voluntary organisations throughout Australia. The Medi Sim unit, which can also be turned into a live field unit, was designed and built by Care Flight Technician Michael Apthorpe. The unit will be back in Orange later this year to perform training in the region.

SCHOOL’S IN WITH PAUL TIERNEY
Exams of a Different Kind While most year 11s and 12s have just completed their HSC trial exams or their end of Preliminary Course exams, many kids are doing their own ‘exams’. For those of you living under a mushroom, late August and early September is peak season for three types of people… Eisteddfod folk, Ballet girls and sporting semi-final teams. While those young ladies from age 4 and upward will be facing formal ballet, tap and modern dance examinations, the kids participating in Eisteddfods are also in hot competition. Music, dance and theatre are the main forms of Eisteddfod fare, and the participants have been rehearsing for months on end for their few minutes of glory in front of the judges and their adoring and non-judgemental families. Once the performances are completed, which can be terrifying in itself, most Eisteddfod judges bring all of the kids up on stage for the awards and ‘comments’. Feedback is supposed to be constructive and positive, but that will remain up for debate during post-mortems, I’m sure. As I did the rounds of the Eisteddfod to silently cheer on my favourite, I sat near a lady who was not a relative of any of the competitors, but the piano teacher of a few, taking time out of her day to see the fruits of piano-lesson labour, now that’s going the extra mile. Like many of you, I’m also a seasoned veteran of the dance scene. Examinations in all types of dance, (after a hectic eisteddfod season), see young ladies at the peak of their dancing powers for the year, as they demonstrate their demi plie, (sorry, just showing off), and a host of other individual and group manoeuvres. The ‘sport’ and beauty of ballet and dance is often misunderstood, but the passion and love for it that the dancers have, (and the love for their teachers), is undeniable. It’s a shame the judges in the Eisteddfods, dance and music exams must remain stony-faced as they evaluate the candidates. I’d love to hear a few woo-hoo’s or ‘yee hah, that was brilliant’ as the kids finish their performances. The next few weekends will also see netballers, rugby, league and soccer players, and hockey players, (and others that I’ve missed, sorry), competing in their semi-finals and grand finals. Hundreds of hours of training and games which began six months ago will culminate in the season-ending clashes, with the number of kids going home as Premiers far outweighed by those with dreams of greater success in 2013. Whilst I will certainly be wearing the colours of the teams of my own children, and those I teach and have links with, I’ll also be having a quiet cheer for the underdogs across the Central West. I love a good David beats Goliath type story, especially when it gives the OTT parents on the sideline a little perspective. To those who have recently sat an exam for dance, music, or academics, to those who gave their all in an Eisteddfod performance, and to those about to try and conquer their Everest in a sporting GF, I applaud you, congratulate you and wish you luck. I hope you had fun while you performed and played this year, because that’s more important than the medal or the trophy. [Don’t forget to give your teacher, instructor, or coach a hug, too; they do it all because they love their trade, and they love you].

We had a quick chat with guitarist/vocalist Harry Mills before they set out on their road trip of rock! Hey Harry, thanks for your time. What would you say drives The Charge as a band? Bacon and eggs, black coffee and flannies. How did you guys meet? The Charge were originally a 3 piece band with Ash, (Lead Vox/Guitar), Jools, (Bass) and Ben, (Drums). I joined in on the shenanigans in 2009 after coming across an add on an online classifieds where they were seeking another guitarist who could sing as well. I auditioned and got the spot. Who or what are the bands influences? Black Sabbath, Mastodon, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden and The Sword. You’ve played in Orange a few times... what are your thoughts on the Orange crowd? What keeps

We plan on recording a new EP next year, plus doing some video clips for some other songs on our current album. Although it boasted captivating visuals and was free for gamers to play, the original Guild Wars could never quiet live up to the hype and adventure of World of Warcraft and take the throne to become the number one multiplayer online RPG’s. It was World of Warcraft’s varied playable races that let the gamers imagination run wild and centred it in pole position. Everything has now changed. With the new Guild Wars 2, which is set 250 years on from its previous version, players now have the option to chose from tremendous fire cats, the Charr, the Dwarven Asura, Were folk Norn, tree like Sylvari or the usual humans. Each individual comes their their on skills to master, unique starting locations and various teachings surrounding them. With the gamer now also having the ability to spend time in the different societies inhabiting the Tyrian world, it makes for an engrossing fantasy game play that draws its gamer in, and is one of the single best choices that developer, ArenaNet, could have made. Game play itself however, seemingly doesn’t differ greatly from the original. You are still required to allocate skills to number keys and take on real-time battles; yet it’s the abundance of new and better-balanced powers that grants the gamer imagination and the game, depth. The upgraded quest system is what allows the player more imagination, compared to the previous, “go here, go there, kill this, hit that” and “find ten of those”. Various missions have now been set up to guide the players through the Guild Wars 2 storyline, which sees the dissimilar races unite against the powerful Lovecraftian Dragon Gods, providing a strangely entrancing storyline for an “MMO”. With the art and visual direction that is so blindingly captivating and draws the gamer in, it’s easy to see serious players will say that they are constantly stunned into silence. Guild Wars 2 really does trounce its previous version in every way possible. And the best part? It’s still free!

The class captains were Barbara Browne and Michael sharpe and one of the vice-captains was Nora Bennett. on March 14, 1975, Leo o’sullivan’s 16 years as the school’s sixth principal came to an end. he was the principal when the new school opened in 1959. orange high’s seventh principal, John hale, began duties three days later. he had been deputy principal at Kyogle high school before his appointment to orange. John hale served in the role until 1982 before transferring to hunters hill high in sydney. he was succeeded by David Griffin from 1983 to 1985 and then long-serving teacher
Max Madden from 1986 to 1991. since then pam Ryan was principal for a number of years while current principal Maree Angus is serving her 13th year but will retire from the position at the end of the year. Following its motto ‘Quod potero sedulo’ (whatever i can do, i will do to the best of my ability), orange high continues to offer its students a wide range of educational opportunities. This is the final instalment of orange high history, which has been included in photo News in conjunction with the school’s centenary. Thanks to local historian and former orange high teacher Ross Maroney for compiling the history.

Bride to be Photos ContRIbUteD On Saturday, August 11 Sarah Howarth celebrated her Hen’s Night in Penrith with dinner aboard a Nepean Belle Cruise before moving the celebrations back to the Panther’s League Club. The theme on the night was dress-up, with party goers dressing up as characters starting with the letters S-AR-A-H. Outfits included a race car girl, angel, hula girls, athlete, schoolboy, superwomen, Santa’s little helper and sinners. Sarah would like to thank her Maid of Honour, Becca Keast, who planned the special occasion. She will be marrying Dennis Rhodes at the end of the year.
