Every week the team at PhotoNews throws in ideas for our cover shot. We always look for a cover that not only catches the eye, but that’s also topical. From time to time however, the right idea doesn’t arrive until right on our deadline! That happened this week. At the chilly time of 6am last Tuesday morning, PhotoNews photographer Chris Bennetts dragged his parents out of bed to pose in a photo that showcases Orange at its most beautiful... when the sun is rising, the autumn leaves are vibrant, and there’s a crisp frost blanketing the grass. It’s a beautiful time of day and worth making the effort to get out of bed one morning just to take it all in, as Chris’ parents discovered. Thanks to Chris Bennetts’ parents for being good sports!

Focusing on Ability The Central West Special Olympics Committee will be holding an Open Day this Sunday to give an insight into what sporting opportunities are available to people with an Intellectual Disability, and to also highlight the achievements of the Central West Team.

CHRIS BENNETTS Special OlympicS auStralia is the not-for-profit organisation that transforms the lives of people with an intellectual disability through sport. each week, dedicated volunteers provide quality sports training to almost 4000 athletes in over 250 sports clubs across australia. training is provided in a range of sports, and all skill levels are catered for. chairperson for the Special Olympics central West, David tandy, said the Open Day is an opportunity for the public to learn more about the organisation. “there’ll be the chance to talk to committee members about the many benefits of Special Olympics, and also an opportunity to experience two of the sports we offer, in basketball and soccer.”

David said that central West team is a force to be reckoned with, having just performed outstandingly at the NSW State Special Olympics. “We’ve just returned from the NSW State Games in Shoalhaven, where 229 athletes from around NSW competed in 5 different sports: Swimming, tennis, Football, Basketball and Golf,” he said. “the central West had six athletes participate in basketball with Dean pallier, Keelan crawford, isaac Wilson, Kelsley manns, Siena Boland and Kane SpiritJones bringing home two gold, a silver and three bronze, which is tremendous results. “We would like to thank Orange city council and in particular cr Neil Jones and Ben Keegan for their help and support.” The open day commences at 9.30am at the PCYC Sir Neville Howse Stadium, this Sunday the 20th of May.

Shows apart BY BOB HOLLAND

With all the controversy surrounding the Orange Showground and the fact that it’s been showtime in the local area over the last few weeks, I wondered if it wasn’t time for organisers to consider a fresh approach to how shows are run. I think it’s fair to say that many people, myself included, have problems with the traditional show concept these days. The fact is I haven’t been to a show for years and have no desire to do so while ever the present system exists. I’m not the slightest bit interested in show bags, sideshow alley, hair raising rides, fighting my way through huge crowds or paying too much for everything. On the other hand I’d be very interested in going to the show to see the various exhibits, the ring events and enjoy looking at the “show” part of the show. I’m sure others feel exactly the same way I do so it seems to me that having two shows each year instead of one makes better sense. One a “Carnival” type show to cater for the show bag, side show alley, crazy rides group and an “Exhibition” type show, held at another time, to cater for the group who simply want to see and appreciate the exhibits, ring events etc. Unless I’m missing something, this would seem to make very good sense and would be very doable. The Carnival show would probably be held around the same time as the present show to fit in with the show circuit, but the Exhibition show could in all likelihood be adapted to run anytime. An Exhibition type show could also be expanded considerably to include other clubs or groups with things to show off such as collectables, artworks, etc. With ring events and all the animal competitions etc. I think there would be an enormous group of people like me who would go to something like that and thoroughly enjoy it, but would not go to see similar things in the show format as it is now. I also believe that having a lot more people looking at exhibits, ring events etc. would be a much greater encouragement to the people who had put in the effort to exhibit or perform their work at the show. It’s pretty obvious too that more businesses would also want to be part of this type of show if the emphasis was on people looking or discovering things, rather than the side show scene. It’s just an idea, but one I think is worth thinking about. Any thoughts?

Rosie Pritchard How did you get involved in Miss Showgirl? I have always been passionate about rural life and the issues that country people face. My family are heavily involved in the agricultural sector and I guess it just runs in my blood. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded young women in the area. What’s involved in being Miss Showgirl? The competition aims to find a young female ambassador who

will represent the Orange Show Society and the local Orange area. Throughout the year there will be various public speaking opportunities, helping with the organisation of the 2013 Orange Show, and I will also attend the Zone Six Finals at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. What do you hope to achieve during your time as Miss Showgirl? I want to get my face out in the community and encourage a new generation to come

forward and be a part of the Orange Show Society. It’s extremely important that we continue this long standing tradition in our community!

John Mills from Rotary Club is inviting the public to attend a meeting at the orange City library

on Tuesday, June 5 from 5pm. “Individuals or community organisations who are interested in promoting a sustainable future should come along and share their ideas and information. It’s really a great opportunity to be a part of a larger project,” he said. a range of activities have already been planned for this year’s event, which aims to give residents information on how to be more efficient in their energy

and water use. highlights include the CSIRo education team running science workshops for school children, the fuel saver car challenge, visits to local homes to demonstrate energy and water saving techniques, and the popular school sustainable cooking challenge. Molong Yarn Market celebrates 40 years It was a conversation in 1972 between June Kirby and Ruth, in which they commented that Molong should have a place in town where local people could meet and also market handcrafts, which led to the development of the Molong Yarn Market. Through negotiations, the sale of debentures, and the support of local, professional and enthusiastic people, the old cottage just up from the corner of Bank St, would open its doors to the public in October 1972 as the new craft market. Over their forty year-long history, there has been over four hundred committee persons, as well as over fifteen hundred members who have all contributed to the progress of the Yarn Market. Both their ideas and craft skills have added to the dream of the original employees. Although the Yarn Market originally welcomed contributions from local family and friends during its opening stages, the organisation is now considered a successful business. Its current team would like to offer a special thanks to all the volunteers who have worked tirelessly and over many years to make the Yarn Market the thriving establishment it is today.

The Orange Society of Model Engineers celebrated their 30th anniversary with an open day full of activities. Barry Potter from the Society of Model Engineers said the Matthews Park site has grown from humble beginnings to become a real feature of Orange. “We started in 1982 when the trees in the park were only knee high! And would you believe that a lot of people were opposed to the track being built when we were starting up... Now it’s become a real icon of Orange! “People who came here as kids are now starting to bring their own kids, which is just magic,” he said. Barry also wanted to thank Orange City Council and Orange Apex Club for their support over the years.

GAME OF THE WEEK MARIO & SONIC: LONDON 2012 NINTENDO WII $38.88 // RATED g Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games marks the third time that Mario and Sonic have squared off against one another and their respective friends and foes in a series of Olympic sporting events. The game is centred around twenty characters; ten each from Mushroom Kingdom and Sonic the Hedgehog Universe. There are a total of 31 events to partake in including a 100m Sprint, Hurdles, Discus, Swimming, Gymnastics, Beach Volleyball, Equestrian, Cycling and more. You can choose a single Olympic event and play through it alone or with up to three friends or computer opponents. Party mode starts by placing each of the four characters on a map that characterises the streets of London. Your goal is to negotiate the map and collect enough stamps to be the first player to fill a stamp sheet. The map may remind you of a game board from one of the Mario Party games. Unlike Mario Party games, you instead control everything as your opponents simultaneously do the same thing. There are plenty of activities to do instead of playing the Party mode. Besides keeping a record of your best performance in each event, you are also awarded a scratch card for every completed match. You can carry up to 99 tickets and scratch them whenever you want to reveal prizes. These include musical compositions from Mario and Sonic games, and Mario and Sonic character costumes for your Mii character. This game has broad appeal for all abilities, ages and controller options. Enthusiastic rugby crowd in 1937 By JOHN MILLER This phoTo shows a section of the large crowd at Wade park, orange, in 1937 for the rugby union match between the touring south African springboks and a Combined Western side. The 1937 tour to Australia and New Zealand was one of the most successful tours in history, so much so that the touring team was nicknamed the ‘invincibles’. This name was reflected in the result in orange that day with the springboks running

out 63-nil winners. The copy of the photo was supplied by Vicki Clunes whose father Joe McCloskey is one of the men leaning on the fence towards the right of the image. The touring team, led by the giant philip Nel, was beaten only once in the tour of Australia, which involved two tests and a number of regional and provincial games. The loss came at the hands of the NsW Waratahs and this 17-6 result in torrential rain in sydney was commemorated last Friday in the super rugby clash between the Waratahs and south Africa’s Bulls.

Orange High School 100 Year Celebration Photos by stePhen scott-RobeRtson Former students of Orange High School recently celebrated the school’s 100th anniversary since inception. As a part of the celebrations, around 50 guests enjoyed a meal and plenty of memories at Duntryleague Golf Club, on Friday, April 27. One story was that of Judy Munro, who was the last captain of Orange High, before the school’s relocation to its current site in 1958. Guests on the night travelled from as far as Perth, Melbourne and Victoria to join in on the commemoration.

What Time Is It? It would appear that a timepiece on your wrist is nothing more than a fashion accessory these days. What time is it when an elephant sits on your fridge? Time to get a new fridge. I remember laughing my head off at that joke when I was a little tacker, but I’m not sure it’d get much of a response these days. Why? Because talking about time, telling time and using a wristwatch to mark the hours in a day is a thing of the past. My brother and his wife have twins who have just turned six. We bought them watches for their birthday; pink for the girl, blue for the boy of course. I invested quite a bit of ‘time’ choosing the correct ones, they were very fashionable and brand name, but I made sure that they had hands, as opposed to digital watches, because I believe telling time the old fashioned way is a powerful learning tool. They loved their present and admired their wrists for the duration of our visit to their home. Yet I’m wondering… am I just an old fuddy-duddy stuck in the past? Hardly any students in my Year 11 class wear a watch to school, and while all three of my kids have watches, they find them more of a hindrance than a help and rarely wear them. It seems everyone tells time these days by their mobile phone or their iPod and that those of us still wearing a precious timepiece on our wrist are in the minority. I can’t kick the habit of using my watch; I reckon I look at it about 30 or 40 times each day. I have two watches that I alternate between wearing, one given to me by a couple of Year 12 students exactly 10 years ago, and one from my wife, given to me almost 23 years ago when we were just boyfriend and girlfriend. They both have hands and they work perfectly and I’ve probably spent more money on keeping them going than what they cost. My phone has the (digital) time on it in big numbers, but I just can’t get into the groove of looking at it to keep track of my day. I mentioned last week that the seniors have just completed their mid-year examinations and I think a lack of time-telling skills will have hampered some of them a little. There’s a ‘no mobile phone or iPod’ rule in the exam room, so the kids who don’t have a watch to perch on their little exam desk have to rely on the old clock at the front of the big exam hall. It’s a hands-type clock, so if telling time doesn’t come naturally to them, (something those us born in the 60s and 70s take for granted), they’re going to struggle managing their time in the three hour exam , as they wrestle with adding and subtracting time portions until the end of the exam time period. The next time I see my niece and nephew, I’m sure that they’ll have their watches on their wrist, (my brother will see to that), but I’m sure they’ll still be telling time by going to his pocket and looking at his phone. Buying and owning a watch will be a thing of the past in ten or fifteen years, I’m guessing, but I’ll still be repairing my two watches and endlessly looking at my wrist until they fall apart.

FAIR’s FAIR Although this married couple enjoyed their luxury fishing boat together, it was the husband who was behind the wheel operating the boat. He was concerned about what might happen in an emergency. So one day out on the lake he said to his wife, “Please take the wheel, dear. Pretend that I am having a heart attack. You must get the boat safely to shore.” So she drove the boat to shore. Later that evening, the wife walked into the living room where her husband was watching television. She sat down next to him, switched the TV channel, and said to him, “Please go into the kitchen, dear. Pretend I’m having a heart attack. Hey hey everyone, Last Sunday was Mother’s Day. What a great day, the Cnr Byng & Seymour Sts, Orange 6362 5466 weather was rainy and cold but I had a blast. Started with giving Kimberly her card and gift. She loved it. Followed that by all going to lunch with my mum,dad, my sister and brother -in-law in town. Had a great lunch, ate way too much, as usual. Then capped oﬀ the night with dinner at Kimberly's parents house, and again, ate way too much. I seriously have a 'eating way too much' problem I think. Aria understood the concept of Mothers day and was telling everyone 'Happy Mother’s day" - really cute. We also played dress up's in the evening. Aria was 'Sally' the hairdresser and I was Pippy Long-stocking, a wicked witch and a bogan called Ray, it was as pretty funny. Mother’s day is a special day where we get to pause for a day and thank all the mums in our lives who make such an amazing diﬀerence in our lives. My mum has always been an amazing lady. I am who I am because of the things she has taught me. Always there for advice and always there for a good old fashion hug if need be. KImberly, wow, where do I I start. For many months of the year Kimberly has to watch over a growing family without my help. Not only does she raise the most amazing kids, she has plenty left love in her to help all her friends and family with what ever they ask of her. I don't know how she does it. She is so strong and I admire her above all. She is the perfect mum. Our family is so very lucky to have her as our own. Be good. Belmo
