Hi friends Between you and me what a relief it is to have the kids back at school. While it has been wonderful to have the cherubs around the house and office during the school break, I think we are all breathing a sigh of relief that school has returned and life has gotten back to some sort of normality. Speaking of normality, Looney Lotto has been back on 2BS of a Friday morning with Ardin at 8.15am. We have received a bit of feedback that the radio format does not suit everyone’s taste and limits who can take part in the weekly competition – with kids getting ready for school and people heading off to work unable to check their bank notes. But we are getting fantastic responses on the radio with the switchboard

swamped with callers when we announce then numbers. That, in itself, is enough to tell me the competition is a success and will continue on 2BS for the foreseeable future. Well done to Rob Lebroque and Janet Lovett for their recent wins. Thanks, as always, to Matt and the team at Advanced Hearing Solutions for their sponsorship and support of the competition. For those unable to take part in Looney Lotto, don’t forget we have our monthly Face in the Crowd and Find a Panther competitions to enter. There are times when each of us need to have a moment of quiet reflection — a sanctuary where it is possible to retreat from the world. DAVE RANKINE THE BATHURST and District Vietnam Veterans Association have dedicated many hours to the development of the Veteran’s Park in Bathurst and as part of this site they determined that a reflection area would be a welcomed addition. Member for Bathurst, Paul Toole, told Bathurst City Life this week that to have a place for all to sit and reflect in a quiet and inviting environment is being established through funding provided by the NSW Government through the Community Building Partnership Program. “This is a site that has been developed through an incredible and committed group,” Paul said. “I am privileged to know each of them and I am humbled by the level of caring and concern they give to others and their focus and vision for

ongoing improvement to a site that has been embraced by many members of our community.” Whilst there is much to be done, Paul said he was honoured to turn the first sod at the proposed reflection area. “There is still a lot of work to be done by the Vietnam Vets but with the funding the refection area will become a reality and will be one more enhancement to a very special community place,” he added. The program allows for community infrastructure to be built, refurbished or enhanced, making an important impact on the day to day lives of local communities. “Applications for the 2015 Community Building Partnership Program will open mid-year and should be considered by all Community Groups and Organisations who may have a complying project in mind,” he concluded.

I have started reading a really interesting book, lent to me by a friend, which outlines 60 philosophers and their view on the world. The first chapter is about meditation and I realised it had plenty to do with the business and Ironman triathlon journeys I am undertaking in 2015. The book’s author points out that the average person has about 60,000 thoughts a day, when you are training before dawn or working alone in an office late at night - I reckon you could go close to doubling that. Do my legs feel good, what is my heart rate, is that advertising strategy OK and how do I boost readers? The author rightly points out that our minds are so filled with this chatter throughout the day, there is no space left between the thoughts. Think about how conditioned we are to keep our minds and situations busy. The author rightly points out that we have become conditioned in our cultural belief that all gaps in conversation (silence) need to be filled quickly. For many, silence represents an embarrassment and a social defect. Therefore, we learn to jump in to fill these spaces, whether or not our filler has any substance. Silent periods in a car or at a dinner are perceived as awkward moments, and good conversationalists know how to get those spaces occupied with some kind of noise. The same happens

With family in the region and the need for a change, the move to Bathurst nearly five years ago, is the best move Natalie has ever made. There are the restaurants and coffee shops that feel like Sydney, but no traffic and few of the hassles you have to deal with over the mountains,” she concluded.

when you train or work. Whether it is listening to music on an iPod to keep the noise going in your head, riding with friends to ensure you have company and conversation or, as I found out while training for Ironman, talking to yourself and listening to the voices in your head – it is very hard to be silent while you train and work. Pascal makes an interesting point when explaining his thought – “if you want to understand your personal universe, if you want to get a better appreciation of how it works and how to dig deeper into your reservoirs, then be quiet and face your hurdles by sitting in a room alone.” In the quiet places of the marathon during the Ironman races I have finished, when there were no supporters to cheer me on, when the cold wind started to blow through me, when the energy level bottomed out, when the legs were on the verge of giving out and the blisters started to pop on my feet – it was during these quiet times that I was able to dig deep and get to the finish line. I was so tired I was unable to think beyond very basic thoughts. My one recollection of the marathon was a very simple philosophy – “I dare not look up”. Pascal is right – sitting alone in a room, literally or metaphorically, has tremendous benefits when attempting efforts like an Ironman race or buying a new business. Federal member for Calare John Cobb last week praised the efforts of eight young workers who have continued to exceed expectations as the Bathurst Green Army project reached its half-way point. DAVE RANKINE SINCE OCTOBER last year, participants have removed more than 200 kilograms of rubbish from key natural areas on the edge of Bathurst City, and two kilometres of old fencing have also been removed from the Peel Flora and Fauna Reserve. Bathurst City Council and Skillset have both received positive reports regarding the Green Army team visitors to the areas they have been working in can certainly see the difference they’ve made to beautify this area of Bathurst in just a short amount of time here “These participants are not only generating real environmental and conservation benefits for the

The Bathurst project will continue until April, with further weed removal, waterway restoration, walking track and fencing construction and overall cleaning work to be completed. This Green Army project in Bathurst aims was to reconnect, regenerate and revegetate the areas they work in and as well as Bathurst, projects are underway in Orange, Blayney and Cabonne under round two of the Green Army Program last year and will hopefully commence early this year.

Support for local history It was great to see so many visitors enjoying our city and local attractions over the long weekend. Two of these visitor highlights are the Bathurst Historical Museum and the very popular Miss Traill’s House. Both of these facilities have recently received funding through the NSW Government’s 2014 Volunteer Initiated Museum Small Grants Program. Bathurst Historical Museum will receive $1727.28 to go towards a mannequin to display the Society’s garment selection. These displays feature objects of local and state significance and will form an integral part of a rotating exhibition that is planned for 2015. Miss Traill’s House will receive $6620 towards a significance assessment project. Miss Traill’s House is such an invaluable and iconic feature of our City attracting many tourists and ensuring our history is preserved for future generations. This funding will enable a consultant to be engaged to work with volunteers to prepare an assessment of the collections at the house. It is also worthwhile noting that the work that is undertaken at both these museums is done by volunteers. Without them and their incredible level of dedication and commitment these very popular facilities would not be in a position to operate. Providing support to initiatives such as these two projects ensures that as a community, we continue to maintain an accurate and concise valuation and record and preservation of our local treasures for future generations to enjoy.

Rahimim welcomed life coach, Leonie Cridland to its Green Drinks event on Friday night. DAVE RANKINE HELD ON the final Friday of each month, Green Drinks is a lecture series which introduces professionals in the community to provide a range of insights from their own experiences all over some delicious local food and beverages. Leonie is the owner of Deep Tree Life Coaching and gave a thought-provoking 45-minute talk about her work as a life coach and the examples she has drawn on from her own life experiences to help others. “After some very difficult periods in my life, where I battled chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), I came across life coaching as a means of helping people get back on their feet,” Leonie explained. “I found it to be such a powerful means to help people deal with the many issues and challenges they face in their lives and wanted to share that with the community to help

empower people’s lives.” Leonie said good life coaching encourages people to work towards achievable goals in their lives and focus on the positive aspects of their lives and move away from negative influences and thinking that can keep people rooted in a problematic environment. Not only was Leonie well-versed during her presentation to 30 attendees, she also engaged a number of those present to share their experiences as an example of how she deals with individuals, in an individual way to start breaking down complex situations. “Very often we use the SMART acronym to help people goal step and get back on track,” she noted. “SMART stands for Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Resourced and Time. “When working with a client we often look into each of these areas of their life and their goals and assist in ensuring they are all a reality and therefore the goal is a sustainable

Volunteers honoured for service Last Friday afternoon, Bathurst Meals on Wheels honoured eight of its long serving volunteers by the inclusion of their names on the Honour Board. While there are actually 10 long serving volunteers, two preferred not be included on the Honour Board. Each volunteer has served the community for more than 30 years and, collectively, they have volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 250 years - a quite remarkable achievement. Meals on Wheels exists to serve the community and the service depends on over 200 volunteers to deliver over 36,000 meals a year to the elderly and frail aged in Bathurst.

Save the date Raglan School Fete The Raglan Public School P&C is asking the community to save the date for its annual fete.

This year’s event will take place on Friday March 13 from 4.00pm to 7.00pm and the school is having a spooky theme. Colonial Fair a highlight of bicentenary On Saturday May 9, 2015 Bathurst Regional Council will conduct a Colonial Fair will be an all-day family event that will involve the wider community of today. The Colonial Fair will be held at the Peace Park end of the riverside park area. All of the events that took place at Thursdays fair will be repeated for Saturday’s event and even further expanded to include more activities for children such as a colonial style bark/slab hut, a merry-go-round, and colonial games; more performances for the general public; a vintage car, truck, motorbike and bicycle display; an ancient internal combustion and steam engine display; large steam traction engines moving about; The Flying Pieman Organ; an army display, and maybe even a vintage aircraft fly-by among other things. Key appointments ensure a stronger growing region Alan McCormack has been appointed chair of Regional Development Australia (RDA) Central West, with Reg Kidd to be his deputy. Alan was general manager of Parkes Council for more than 20 years and since his retirement ,has been in huge demand, filling in as acting general manager with other councils. The priority of these appointments was to ensure a stronger, growing region and to ensure all three tiers of government work together to achieve common goals. Deputy Prime Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the RDA committees are an important mechanism to increase access to Australian Government programmes in their communities. “The committees will also assist local community stakeholders to develop project proposals and direct them to appropriate public and/or private funding sources – including the $1 billion National Stronger Regions Fund,” Mr Truss said.

CONFIDENT BUSINESSES IN THE CENTRAL WEST Dear Editor, Central West businesses remain confident in the performance of the State’s economy, according to the latest NSW Business Conditions Survey conducted by the NSW Business Chamber. Our survey of Central West businesses shows improved business conditions for the December quarter across a range of key indicators, such as perceptions of the State’s economic performance, staffing levels and capital spending. More than 25% of local businesses reported seeing improvements in the State’s economic

performance in the past three months, up from 20% in the September quarter. The survey shows an increase in capital spending for the December quarter, with 22% of local businesses initiating some form of capital spending over the last three months, up from 18% in September 2014. Over 40% of businesses reported concerns about operating costs this quarter, and there was also a slight decrease in the number of businesses reporting profits after several quarters of improvement. In positive news for jobseekers, 19% of Central West businesses reported that they hired staff in the past three months, compared to just 6% the previous quarter.” Consistent with the previous quarter, Central West businesses reported difficulties finding suitably skilled staff. 42% of Central West businesses indicated that they are encountering a skills shortage, right on par with other regional areas, where on average 45% of business struggled to find skilled staff. Gardening is good for the soul As Bathurst City Life begins its new journey here as a locally owned publication, readers may start to see a few additions to the weekly content within its pages. One such addition will be the musings of Karen Granger. DAVE RANKINE & KAREN GRANGER THOSE IN the gardening world here in Bathurst will know Karen, and her husband Ian, very well. They have spent the past four years creating the beginnings of a permaculture garden, on the residential block in Llanarth. Now before you roll your eyes and turn the page, Karen explains that permaculture is about so many things, a way of living, not just gardening or landscaping or horticulture. “It really encourage people to reuse their resources, food they have paid for by weight and throw half away, capturing water, making the most of northern aspects and recycling before having to purchase more stuff,” she said. “This is a form of gardening that is all about working with what you have and starting small and working with the natural environment - having it’s diversity work for you instead of making the things we grow totally reliant on our chemicals.” Karen told Bathurst City Life it inspires

her every day and people may be surprised that they are probably already doing some of it themself. “Using your recycle bin, growing some vegetable or having a lemon tree in a pot, a couple of chooks in the yard, building your new home to capture the sun and lower heating costs, installing a tank to ease excess water are all examples of permaculture.” Each week, Karen will share tips, ideas, little treasures and some of the simple pleasures in life, through each season in a local garden in the pages of Bathurst City Life. “I’m no expert and I won’t be getting technical, just sharing some of the knowledge that over 25 years of gardening, many have shared with me. “The goal is to use your yard as a threedimensional part of your home, not just pretty plants, awesome landscaping, entertaining or the best turf in the street. “All this is great, so why not also have it working for you as well,” she urged. “I want people to enjoy some edibles

while they hang out the wash, bring back the bees and the birds, have systems in place to cycle nutrients so that they’re not buying them, harvest fruit and vegetables, let your kids or grandkids experience sowing a seed and picking something to eat or collecting a fresh egg.” Karen said this is all achievable in a backyard. “I was amazed when I did my Urban Permaculture design certificate in Sydney how little space they had to work with. Designing whole systems for a courtyard or deck because that was all the space there was. “We have backyards! It doesn’t matter what size. “So that’s my message,” she beamed. “What you can do in a normal backyard even if you are renting or in a unit.” Karen aid she will not be asking readers to go cold turkey and rip everything out and start again. “Just give over a patch of turf, start with what you have and use what you can. “Some readers may have been through

my garden last October - it’s my passion, interest and hobby, clearly it’s my disease,” she joked. “I often hear people sigh and say ‘if you just had the time’. Well it’s a New Year, so don’t talk yourself out of it - doing something is better than nothing. “Just 10 minutes in the morning with your first cuppa of the day, after work with a well deserved cold beer, or wandering around your garden in the evening with a glass of red is enough time to see and pull out a weed or water a pot or pick off a caterpillar, or harvest some herbs. “Through this column, I want to encourage people to feel a connection with their own little sanctuary. It is good for the heart mind and soul. “Before you stop to check the news on TV, do your emails or engage in all manner of social media, take a step outside to clear your head, listen and feel. “I hope you come along for the journey each week, it’s our city’s Bicentenary, make a start in your part of it. “If you already have tried and true methods you follow now, that’s great. If I can inspire an idea, spark an interest or just add one tip to your routine, a simpler way of doing a task you can incorporate, a bit of what I share in my workshops, my job is done. “Till next weeks column, Getting Started – enjoy,” she concluded.

They’re prepping the escape pod. The Queen’s People are boarding as we speak.’ ‘Stay with the queen,’ barked Mr Chase. ‘Board the pod with her. Don’t let her out of your sight.’ He terminated the call. A cold smile

settled across his face as he resumed fine-tuning the controls. Down below a ragged line of heavily furred people jostled towards the small silver pod resting on the launch pad. The men of the queen’s household wore rich velvet cloaks with fur collars and fine satin scarves. They looked scared.

Chapter Four. All these people were descendants of an exploratory space mission which crashed on the ice planet over 4000 years ago. The survivors immediately set about establishing a class system based on the crew hierarchy, those who survived the crash. Thus the current royal family descended from the mission’s captain, and the workers on board the original spaceship – cooks, cleaners, etc – parented twenty generations of ice planet commoners. People jostled and pushed to get a seat on the tiny escape pod, all that had been retrieved from the crash of the original spaceship. It was not vehicle for intergalactic travel capacity, designed for planet hopping with only enough fuel for one leg of the journey back to Earth. It had been held back for a real emergency. This was a real emergency. The pod had been quickly packed and prepped for take-off and countdown. A sullen mob of commoners watched as the pod powered up in the gloom. Just as the tiny engines hit optimal revs the hatch popped open and a folding ladder rattled down to the tarmac. The queen climbed down, closely followed by the lord advisor. ‘I will not abandon my people,’ she said to the lord advisor who was muttering and shaking his head.

Volunteers honoured for service Last Friday afternoon, Bathurst Meals on Wheels honoured eight of its long serving volunteers by in the inclusion of their names on the Honour Board. WHILE THERE are actually 10 long serving volunteers, two preferred not be included on the Honour Board. Each volunteer has served the community for more than 30 years and, collectively, they have volunteered for Meals on Wheels

for 250 years - a quite remarkable achievement. Meals on Wheels exists to serve the community and the service depends on over 200 volunteers to deliver over 36,000 meals a year to the elderly and frail aged in Bathurst.

The longest endurance race in Australia, has become a must-see event on Bathurst’s sporting calendar. The event consists of multiple categories including the historic touring cars right up to the latest in endurance car technology as seen at Le Mans. A large number of colourful and popular motorcycles will be on display during the event. A free jumping castle and live music will be on from 11.30am, while the show will run between 9am and 3pm. The cost is free.

February 7 Sustainable Lifestyle House 17 McGirr Street Funded by Bathurst regional Council, the house ha been designed to improve the awareness and to encourage the adoption of sustainable building design in new and existing buildings in the community. The house will be open to the public between 9am and midday.

February 8 Bathurst Mountain Bike park College Road 9am-4pm In the lead-up to the Evocities mountain bike race in Bathurst on May 31, the local club is asking all mountain bike riders to join them for a working bee at the trails to assist in finishing the single-track in readiness for the race. The club will provide a BBQ lunch during the day and a cooling ale when the work is done

WHO AM I?

I was born Alphonso Joseph D’Abruzzo on January 28, 1936, in New York City. I graduated from university with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English. During my junior year, I studied in Paris, acted in a play in Rome, and performed with my actor father on TV in Amsterdam. I married Arlene Weiss and we went on to have three daughters. I began my acting career in the 1950s. In 1966, I starred in the musical The Apple Tree on Broadway and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. My big break came in 1972 when I secured the role of Hawkeye Pierce in the long running war-based comedy M*A*S*H. In my later years I have appeared in ER, several Woody Allen movies, The West Wing, 30 Rock, and Law & Order: LA.

Singing for their supper Members of Bathurst Panorama Chorus are getting ready to cook and sing up a storm at their annual Luncheon to be held at Yetholme Community Hall at 12 noon on Saturday February 14. Guests will enjoy a delicious buffet luncheon, performance by the chorus and a handicraft display. The new chorus recipe book “Singing up an Appetite” will also be available for sale, featuring all the favourite salads and slices served at the luncheon. This event is part of the Chorus’ fundraising to represent Australia at the Sweet Adelines Harmony Classic in Las Vegas in October 2015. Bookings for the luncheon are essential and can be made to Katherine on 6337 5131. Bookings close on 8 February.

Scouts celebrate Australia Day with John Woods

Thumbs up! Life is really all about attitude. Driving to work this morning on my country road, I came across a large group of coloured lycra bottoms slowly cycling up a hill (is 1okph up a hill slow?) Why get all uptight about it – after all they are fellow human beings, supposedly enjoying themselves on a Saturday morning. Just continue to stick to the left and you’ll be just fine. Thumbs down to the supermarket in Bathurst who refuses to open an express checkout. Forcing people to use self serve doesn’t work. Wages saved equals customers lost. Thumbs up to Liam Baden & Michelle for the wonderful evening of songs they performed, at the Me and My Shadow Show on Friday night. Thumbs up to Mick at Belly’s Bikes for working out how to fix and fixing the breaks on my son’s pool wheelchair.

Last Monday, 3rd Bathurst (All Saints Cathedral) Scout Group set up the Flag Pole for the raising of the Australian Flag at the Australia Day celebrations for the Eglinton and Bathurst communities. They celebrated the day with the Bathurst Regional ambassador John Woods (Actor). While talking to the Scouts, Mr Woods noted that he too was a former scout for a number of years and totally enjoyed his time in the scout movement. For a number of years, the scouts from 3rd Bathurst have set up the pole and ﬂag for the Australia Day celebrations on behalf of the Bathurst Regional Council.

Thumbs up to Rahamim for a really interesting Green Drinks on Friday night. We loved the speaker and it was extremely relevant to our walk right now. Thumbs up to Bathurst Historic Car Club for the swap meet at Bathurst Showground on Sunday. We have never see so many people with goods to sell at this event.

Supporting a little adventure The Bathurst Community Club will play host on February 22 to a fundraising and family day on behalf of local charity rider Rick Foster. Rick sets off on March 1 to ride his bike from Adelaide to Bathurst to raise money for Crohns and Colitis research and the Westmead Children’s Hospital. A Little Adventure, as the ride is known, will be farewelled at the family and auction day, with barefoot bowls, jumping castle, futsal and a charity auction. Rick is pictured with a selection of items available on the day which include a signed cricket bat, Wallabies jersey, NRL Kangaroos jersey and V8 Supercar team shirts. Raf So Raf, nice to meet you. Tell us a little about yourself? I am 13-months-old and about to graduate from the “Dogs for Diggers” program at Bathurst Correctional Centre. I am really excited and was down in Bathurst last week with my handler. Tell us about Dogs for Diggers. It takes rescued dogs and we are trained by inmates as companion animals. Once

we graduate, we are given to a returned serviceman or woman who is doing it a bit tough and become their companion and fried. It is pretty cool. Sounds awesome – has it been fun? Yep, I have learned so many new tricks to help my companion and obviously having been rescued, I have had a second chance at life. I reckon this program also gives

my trainers a second chance at life, given some have also had a tough go at life. It is a winwin really. Are there many dogs that graduate? There are a few of us graduating in the coming weeks, and eight more dogs are about to start their training next week with the inmates.

Ever wanted to make $70 an hour? Well, hard at work in Carillion Park on Sunday morning was Bob Howarth. A grey-nomad, Bob was spotted with his trusty metal detector searching for a few treasures in the grass, with a couple of hour’s work yielding about $140 in loose change, plus a 1916 and 1922 penny. Bob noted that he and his wife travel around the country and fill in their day searching for coins in parks and gardens in the towns they visit. “We only use a screwdriver to dig up the coins, so we don’t disturb the grass. We see some people using a small mattock to dig up the grass and that ruins it for everyone,” Bob said. Bob said has was diagnosed with cancer three-and-a-half years

ago and given 18 months to live. “I am just trying to make the most of the time I have left and this is a whole lot of fun,” he added. “We have also had some great finds including a man’s wedding ring in Nowra that was valued at $990.” Bob said they find plenty of phones in the travels and always hand them into the authorities. “We have a tough enough time paying for one phone. People live by their phones these days so it is nice to get them reunited. “We also went to a park the day after a free concert in Dubbo recently and walked away four hours later with $317, so you do have some pretty good days,” he concluded.

The Bathurst Historical Car Club’s swap meet at Bathurst Showground on Sunday attracted a big crowd. Club president, Norm Rutherford, said more than 100 stall-holders ﬂocked to Bathurst to sell their wares to the more than 2000 punters who came through the gate. “We had store-holders from Victoria and Queensland make the trip to Bathurst, plus people from right across the state,” Norm noted. “We are over the moon at how well it went.”

COMPILED BY A BATHURST HISTORIAN THIS ST. Stephen’s Church is the second and current Presbyterian Church on the cormer of Howick and George Streets. The first church was opened in 1835 and later demolished after this location was acquired. This church was constructed during 1871 and 1872 with Rev. Dr. Archibald Constable Geike keeping his eye on proceedings. As soon as it was decided to build this church fundraising began and some 20 months later Rev. Adam Thomson from St. Stephens in Sydney was on hand for the foundation stone laying ceremony. The block of stone, which was attached to a block and tackle and timber tripod, was lowered into position after a small bottle of souvenirs was placed under it. After the stone “was well and truly laid” a collection was taken up for the building fund raising £23-13-7 as well as £10-13-5 from the luncheon. Mr. Rowe, Architect of Sydney, drew up the plans and designed the building. Mr. Matthew H. Sadleir was the local building supervisor. Just over a year later the new church was opened and dedicated in front of the large congregation with every seat occupied despite the inclement weather. The church was finally paid off in 1888.
