Hi friends Between you and me, what a hectic first week this has been as a newspaper owner. There never seems to be enough hours in the day, but it was certainly rewarding to watch our first edition come off the printing presses at North Richmond ridiculously early last Wednesday morning. Thanks to everyone who continues to support Bathurst City Life as we continue to grow right here in Bathurst. This week, you will notice plenty of wonderful photos of kids and the community in our pages. With school holiday programs in full swing this past week and Australia Day celebrations only a couple of days ago, it has been wonderful to get out into the community and capture so many great images of the people that make this community the awesome place that it is. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the broad smiles of kids as they are eating an ice cream in the park, enjoying a sausage sizzle or simply hanging out with family and enjoying a long weekend. Whilst on Australia Day, well done to Bathurst Council for their activities in both

Eglinton and Machattie Park on Monday. Australia Day is a time we all celebrate the wonderful country and community we live in. It is always a powerful thing to watch newcomers to our country become citizens at the ceremony conducted each Australia Day. Sometime we take for granted what we have here in Australia. To see the sheer joy on the faces of people who have come to our shores for any number of reasons and pledge to become citizens and adopt our country as their own, reminds me that we are so lucky to live here. So thank you to the people who, on Monday, became official Australians. Thank you for reminding me what a great place we have here, thank you for coming to our country and enriching it with your experiences and thank you for choosing Bathurst to make your home and to enrich our local community. Till next week – take a moment to remember just how good we have it here. Oh and don’t forget – as our National Anthem goes – “Australians all let us ring Joyce – for she is young and free…”

Child, Adolescent Trauma Counsellor, Jem Maddox, will be running a program called Bringing Up Great Kids, teaching parents how to provide a caring, supportive growing experience for traumatised children.

Bringing up great kids A new program teaching parents how to provide a caring, supportive growing experience for traumatised children is about to commence at the Central West Women's Health Centre (CWWHC) in Bathurst. DAVE RANKINE THIS PROGRAM is for parents/carers of children 0 to 17 years who have experienced domestic/family violence, abuse, neglect, who are at risk of significant harm (ROSH), or are in ‘out of home care’. While other parenting programs traditionally focus on ‘behaviour management’ skills, “Bringing Up Great Kids” focuses on parenting skills, such as warmth, sensitivity and parental reflection. Child, Adolescent Trauma Counsellor, Jem Maddox told Bathurst City Life that as a parent or carer of a traumatised child,

this course will help participants to better understand their child’s experience of the world, how to enhance the connection, warmth and sensitivity between them and their child. “Some of the things you will learn will include how trauma affects the developing brain and the messages that are hidden in behaviour,” Jem said. “We will also help participants to understand their child’s experience of the world, and how to communicate effectively with traumatised children.” Jem added the course would give parents the chance to reflect on how they were parented and how they operate as a parent.

“Previous participants have benefited from the course by gaining an understanding of what’s happening to their child and how to deal with that situation,” she noted. “We have received feedback where participants have told us they have met people that are in similar situations, felt appreciated and felt respected.” Jem stressed participants would need to attend a pre-group interview with the CWWHC to determine if this is the right group for you. Plans are underway for the annual Highland Fling debutante ball this year, an event which has been endorsed as part of the official B200 bicentennial celebrations calendar. Working hard already, and resplendent in her own Scottish tartan, was organiser Marion Pearce. Marion told Bathurst City Life that plans were well progressed for this year’s ball, which will again be held at Panthers. Numbers are being limited to 20 and

Marion said she expected plenty of people to come forward to start preparing for the gala evening. “We will have live music at practices this year, to give the girl and their partners the chance to feel what it is like to dance to a real Scottish band,” she said. “And the debutantes will also be learning some of the classic dances so the know them on the night and can perform them for the large crowd of family and friends.”

Marion noted the Highland Fling has always been a popular event on the Bathurst social calendar and welcomed people to join the evening, even if they did not know people making their debut. “It is a fun night full of wonderful music and great food and plenty of fun,” she added. Tickets are not on sale until April but flyers are available at the B200 store in George Street.

Say cheese! OK, those people who know me well, know I love cheese. It is no huge secret. But lately, I have been cutting back on my cheese intake, partly because it is high in fat and partly because, if eaten too closely to bed, it is meant to give you nightmares. And if there is one thing I love more than cheese, it is a good night’s sleep. I have started training for an Ironman triathlon in Western Australia at the end of the year, and having done a handful of these endurance events, I have come to the conclusion that Ironman training is about sacrifice - and every video of Ironman Kona I have watched reiterates this point. So far, cheese and beer, well all alcohol have been at the top of the sacrifice list. But then I read a very interesting article about cheese in a book entitled the “Second Book of General Ignorance” (Lloyd and Mitchinson 2010). In the article, I read that in 2005 the British Cheese Board organised a study in an attempt to dispel the malicious rumours that cheese gave the eater nightmares. And thankfully, the results were conclusive. More than three quarters of the 200 volunteers who took part, each of whom ate 20 grams of cheese before retiring for the night, reported undisturbed sleep. They didn’t have nightmares, in fact’ most found they could remember their dreams far better than before the experiment started. You little ripper!

Furthermore, it seemed even the type of cheese influenced the type of dream the person had. Cheddar generated dreams about celebrities, while Red Leicester summoned childhood dreams. It seemed that soft cheeses like brie and camembert made people dream about work (remind me to steer clear of that), while those that ate edam had no dreams at all. There also seemed to be a division between the sexes as 85 per cent of women who ate blue cheese recalled bizarre dreams about sexual rituals, talking soft toys and vegetarian crocodiles. Importantly, the overall conclusion was that cheese was a perfectly safe late-night snack…(remind me to buy some blue when I get home). In addition, because cheese contains the serotonin-producing amino acid, trytophan, it is likely to reduce stress and, therefore, encourage peaceful sleep. One last thing, despite the profusion of Australian cheese in recent years, the French still eat twice as much cheese per head than Australians. And 40 million wellsleeping French can’t be wrong…

Youth Council calls for new members DAVE RANKINE The Bathurst Regional Youth Council (BRYC) is putting out the call for new members to contribute to their community and have their voices heard. BRYC is made up of a group of about 20 young people aged from 12 to 24 years, representing a diversity of people and interests. Members may include in and out of school young people, Indigenous and nonIndigenous young people, young parents, young people with disabilities, migrant young people and people living away from home. BRYC discusses and takes action on all sorts of youth issues such as the environment, music and entertainment, road safety, drugs and alcohol and other issues that affect our community and advises Council and community groups. BRYC also organises events and initiatives for young people. “Being a member of the Youth Council is a great opportunity to develop new skills, meet new people and make sure your voice is

heard”, Mayor of Bathurst, Gary Rush told Bathurst City Life. “The Youth Council makes a real difference – not just to our community, but to the members themselves. They develop invaluable skills that will serve them into the future, and have a great time while they do it!” 2014 Youth Council member Keegan Bringolf said he has had a fantastic time on the Youth Council. “It’s been heaps of fun. I’ve done so many great things, such as work experience at the Governor General’s office, and getting a really good idea of what it takes to organise events. I’ve also enjoyed the opportunity to socialise with people from other schools,” he said. Members are expected to spend four to eight hours per month on Youth Council meetings and activities, and there are some great benefits to be had. Bringing chess to the people Chess came to the library forecourt on Thursday as the Bathurst Chess Club took on all comers as part of the school holiday program.

DAVE RANKINE LIBRARY MANAGER, John Cumberford, said he wanted to make chess more accessible for kids in the community, while giving people the chance to watch some quality chess played live and in large scale. “We had about 20 kids turn up during the morning, playing each other and playing members from the chess club,” he said. John said he will be running a chess competition on April 11 for under 18s and thanked everyone for coming along.

In the lead-up to the Bathurst Bicentenary, Bathurst City Life is partnering with Bathurst Regional Council to provide a wonderful collection of stories about historic people and events that have shaped this great city over the past 200 years. 200 Tales is an initiative that has been created by the Bathurst 200 team in an effort to collect personal stories of those with a link to Bathurst. The “Tell us your story” collection is a compilation of stories that show the spirit of giving, the unique characters, important personal and public milestones and cherished memories from those who form the fabric of our community.

He thanked John Wood for his speech and told the crowd the reason why his characters in Raffety’s Rules and Blue Heelers were, in his opinion, Mr Woods ability to embody the notion of a fair go and mateship – qualities which resonate with all Australians. Mr Morgan is best known by many in the community as the owner of Abercrombie House, however his legacy on our community extends well beyond his residence. He has given 25 years continued service to the Bathurst community as a volunteer and office bearer of more then 30 local organisations, charities and special projects. Mr Morgan has also been the Master of ceremonies for the past 15 Proclamation Day celebrations and has been president of the Historical Society for the past seven years. He has authored a number of books including the History of Bathurst 1815-1915 and has also run the Rural Young Achievers Program at Bathurst Show for the past 10 years. Mayor Gary Rush described him as “a great Bathurstian” in presenting the Citizen of the Year Award during Monday’s celebrations.

OFFICIAL FUNCTIONS were held at Eglinton and Machattie Park, while informal celebrations were enjoyed by large segments of the community. A highlight of every Australia Day is the involvement of the annual ambassador, and this year Bathurst was graced by legendary Australia actor John Wood. Mr Wood spoke of his love of Australia Day and told the large crowd he first spoke at an Australia Day function 20 years ago in Bendigo. “Life is full of accidents,” he joked with the crowd. “And the biggest accident of all is one’s conception. While you can’t chose your parents, I am extremely fortunate that I was chosen to live in tis great country, and for that I have a lot to thank my parents for,” he noted. Mr Wood spoke at length about his career and his good fortune to have been recognised for his efforts in the arts – including a Gold Logie in 2006. “It was one of my proudest moments,” he added. “But we all have a hell of a lot we can be proud of, and on Australia Day, nothing makes me prouder than to call myself an Australian.” Mr Wood then introduced Bathurst’s Citizen of the Year for 2015, Christopher Morgan.

In 1926 a mother of 11 children, Mrs Beatrice Langford began a regular social dance for her children and their friends to be a part of her home in lower Howick Street Bathurst. With acreage behind the house known as Up Folds Flat and with more young people arriving, it became more than just a social dance. Many sports began to be played for the young people to let off steam and a social club began to take form which later resulted in the Charleston’s Football Club. The name Charleston was chosen by Ron Langford as this was the dance of the time that the group started to meet. Two of Mrs Langford’s sons, Ron and Ivor together with future son in law Chris

McGill, were integral to the development of the club in its early years. Chris McGill came up with the clubs colours Red and Black, while Ivor was a strong driving force behind the atmosphere and activities of the football club, before his death at an early age. The Langford family “Mrs Football” died 88 years old on September 21 1969. The Charleston’s Football Club continued till 1989 when they amalgamated with Bathurst Leagues Club and became the Penguins and later became today’s Bathurst Panthers. In 1966 Charlestons Football Club celebrated its 40th Birthday and a sprightly lady, now 85 years young, with a modern outlook on life, has played a dominant part in the formation of Charlestons Football Club and could well qualify for the title of “Bathurst Mrs Football”.

Looking back at local school DAVE RANKINE The Bathurst Public School P&C are organising a “Back to Bathurst Public School Weekend” on 23rd and 24th May this year as part of the city’s 2015 bicentennial celebrations. The event will include a gala dinner on the Saturday night and an Open Day Fair on Sunday. Whilst the Fair will have all the fun of a fete it will also include school tours and a photographic exhibition called “Inkpots to ipads”. The photo exhibition will tell the story of schooling over the years at Bathurst Public School in upper George Street. Currently organisers are collecting memories and photographs from past students, staff and the general public. Your assistance with any photographs, memorabilia or history of the school would be invaluable. It would be greatly appreciated if you could boost the school archives (which are very poor) with some additional photographs from your own collection. Contact the school if you can assist.

Google helps business drive the information superhighway City Hall at BMEC was full to capacity for the Google workshop last week.

A large crowd of business owners from across the region converged on BMEC last week, eager to improve their footprint in the digital era. DAVE RANKINE MORE THAN 300 people had signed up for the Google workshop by the time it was underway and City hall was standing room only as the workshop commenced. In fact, Bathurst Regional Council’s acting manager of economic development Steve Bowman said the roll-up was well beyond his wildest expectations, forcing Council to switch rooms to accommodate participants as registrations grew in the days leading up to the event. “This was by far the biggest workshop of this nature that we have ever conducted and it was amazing to see so many people get involved, from as far away as the Blue Mountains, Orange and Cowra,” Mr Bowman told Bathurst City Life. “We had 150 people register within a week of

announcing the event was on, so we know we have tapped into a rich vein with the needs of the local business community when it comes to the digital environment.” The workshop was conducted by Sydneybased team My Business Plus, which is the only Google accredited advisory company in New South Wales. Leo Ruiu and Grant Hartley of My Business Plus delivered the two-hour workshop and it was clear that, by the end of the event, there were a large number of converts to the Google Plus site. Grant told the large crowd that the web is so full of information, much of it worthless, so having good search protocols in place was a great boost for any business that has an online presence. “In fact, as technology gets more advanced, searching will become more pre-emptive and

search engines will already know what you are interested in based on previous search history. “Understanding that technological shift and being able to tap into it, is a vital aspect of any business development and growth,” he added. He also recommended that business design their sites and information with mobile technology in mind. “If you are designing for desktop platforms you are behind the eight-ball, as more often people are relying on their phones and tablets like iPads for their online experience. “More people than ever before are using their phone as a personal computer and this is only set to increase as mobile technology continues to improve, more wifi spots are available for users and more people become mobile in all aspects of their life.”

Airport runway on track DAVE RANKINE The planned project for the rehabilitation of the runway at Bathurst Airport is on track for completion within the six–week deadline. Pavement stabilisation of the existing runway has been completed, with the crushed rock pavement overlay well underway. Contractors have been working 12 hour days to ensure that the project is completed on time. Bathurst Mayor Cr Gary Rush told Bathurst City Life it was an important project to ensure the continued safety of the runway and long term viability of this important transport hub. “This is a major infrastructure project for Council, and it’s important to get it right. I’m looking forward to seeing the airport back up and running at full capacity in coming weeks,” he said. The project is scheduled for completion on February 14, with normal flights resuming on Sunday 15 February. As owner operator of the airport, Bathurst Regional Council is required to maintain the runways to a standard approved by CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) to retain the license to operate. While the work is being completed, REX is running its summer schedule flights out of Orange. The shorter gravel runway is still operational for most other aviation activity.

a great ambassador Celebrating Australia Day in Bathurst on Monday as its official ambassador was Australian actor, John Wood. DAVE RANKINE FOLLOWING ON from Paula Duncan in 2014, herself a well-respected Australian actress, John Wood was a welcome addition to the events across town. Wood began his acting career in 1967, where he had a guest role in Bellbird, an Australian television series. He then appeared in several Australian drama series and mini-series in minor roles. John also wrote eleven episodes of the series Prisoner. It wasn’t until 1987 that John Wood became a well-known actor, taking the lead in Rafferty’s Rules, as magistrate Michael Rafferty. Wood twice won a Logie for “Most Outstanding Actor” for his role in the show

during its four seasons. In 1993, Wood landed a leading role in Blue Heelers as Tom Croydon. This show became a big hit in Australia. As well as starring in the show, he also wrote several episodes. The show was finally cancelled in 2006, and Wood is one of only two actors (the other being Julie Nihill) to star in Blue Heelers from its beginning in 1993 to its end in 2006, although Wood is the only character to be seen in every single episode. Wood also wrote three episodes for the series. Wood was a contestant in the 2004 edition of the Australian Dancing with the Stars. In 2007, Wood appeared on Channel Ten’s tele-movie, Joanne Lees - Murder in the Outback, where he played barrister Grant Algie. He currently hosts Channel Nine’s travel series Wine Me, Dine Me.

Croc a hit at Bunnings

Bathurst’s Best Beards competition is attracting entries but organisers are looking for more bearded men in Bathurst to get involved.

Spotted at Bunnings Hardware on Saturday morning was Lochlan Bartley from the Get Wild Animal Experience in Sydney. Lochlan is pictured with a two-year-old saltwater crocodile that was part of a native animal exhibition in store. The crocodile, known as Snap, is the runt of a litter of crocodiles born in captivity, but will still grow to six-metres in length by the times he is fully grown.

All entries will appear on the Bathurst Best Beard’s Facebook page. The beard with the most likes by March 29 wins an amazing prize, while the seven highest likes will go through to final judging. The categories, judged by an all- girl panel in the various Bathurst’s Best Beards categories – Best Ginger, Best Grey, Longest, Grooviest, Best Designer Beard, Funniest, Bushiest and Best Short Beard. Driver reviver - a welcome break Bathurst City Life called into the Driver Reviver in Bathurst on Saturday for a cup of tea and a chat during a busy morning on the road. Smiling and offering a cuppa were Nan McMinn and Joy Press who were volunteering their time to provide a welcome break for travellers. The pair has served more than 30 travellers during Saturday morning including a family on their way to Adelaide.

Environmental project launched today The Green Army will officially launch the Hilltops to Waterways: Urban Environment Project at the Blayney Road Commons today at 10am. The launch will take place at the site of the program, which aims to reconnect, regenerate and revegetate the natural Grass Box and Eucalypt bush remnants. The Green Army is a hands-on, practical, grassroots environmental action programme for young Australians aged between 17 and 24, that supports local environmental and heritage conservation projects across Australia. This particular project in Bathurst will improve connectivity between remnant woodland patches in the Mount Panorama precinct and the riparian vegetation of Bathurst’s urban creeks and the Macquarie River. It is expected the project will deliver tangible benefits for the environment and Australia’s heritage and provide participants with skills, training and experience to help them enter the workforce, improve their career opportunities and further their education and training.

The barbeque on the weekend was part of a statewide initiative by Bunnings to assist with emergency services across New South Wales. Bunnings provided the food and drinks for the barbeque and staff worked in two-hour shifts to serve the large number of customers who enjoyed a sausage sandwich during the day.

Chapter One. It was nearly 5am. The light of the distant dawn hadn’t yet reached the planet which lay quiet and still in frozen silence. The houses were carved of ice, all completely and totally different designs, elaborate and beautiful and only made possible by centuries of peace and prosperity. That and the cold. Calla Icecutter pulled the fur collar of her ice jacket tighter around her throat as she strode out the door of her icehouse toward the communal fishing hole in the centre of the village. Her warm breath billowed out of her mouth in a big plume like smoke from a dragon. When Calla reached the hole she pulled the canvas cover away, dropped a baited line and was almost instantly rewarded with a huge tug at the other end. She puffed and the muscles in

her arms ached as she hauled up the frostfish, but she smiled despite the pain; this 12 kilo monster would feed her family for days. Stoked with her easy catch she started to dance-step her way home, overlooking two small but vital clues; the frostfish had died almost the second it left the water, and the glistening edge of the sheer cut ice hole had started to melt. Across to the north of the ice town Molly Frost was searching for snow-anise plants to make medicine for her aunt, whose wracking cold threatened to burst her lungs out. The herb had been common and plentiful until just days ago but now the only specimens were withered and yellow, not the usual rich purple. A drop of water fell onto her head from the trees above. She screamed.

Chapter Two. ‘The ice-roof fell in on our house!’ shouted Olaf Snowbeard, ‘and killed my house boy stone dead. That could’ve been my daughter…’ ‘My whole family is sick with thaw flu,’ yelled a distraught mother. ‘What can I do?’ ‘All my animals are acting strangely, pawing the ground and rolling on their backs. They are going crazy.’ The queen banged her sceptre on the slick floor of the ice castle. ‘’It is simple. Our planet is melting.’ This comment set the crowd off in a riot, and it took ten minutes of the lord advisor shouting ‘Silence!’ to rein in the noise, at which point the queen added, ‘So what do we do?’ Stayed tuned next week for the next instalment of The Thaw.

MY TAKE ON IT.. GOOD With Japan suffering a shock loss to the United Arab Emirates, going down in a penalty shootout 5-4, the Socceroos, if they weren’t already, have leapt into favouritism for the Asian World Cup. Firstly though, they have to overcome the UAE on Tuesday, (yes, I’m writing this on Australia Day, so dedicated am I to the cause) and with the Emirati’s now feeling decidedly more confident, it may be tougher than anticipated. To my uneducated eye, Japan appeared to dominate their match but couldn’t seem to convert the pressure into points. A couple of missed opportunities from two of their stars in Honda and Kagawa didn’t help. The Aussies will be confident but know that the UAE side won’t go down wondering. They have proven to be nothing if not tenacious and will throw everything at the Socceroos. If the Aussie boys can starve the very talented Omar Abdulrahman of possession – or at least minimise his influence – it will help their cause significantly. Abdulrahman is such a complete player on the ball but is lazy defensively, an area that can be targeted. Our lads are probably the fittest team left in the competition and will double-team Abdulrahman when he’s in possession. It will be interesting to see if the Emirati’s can match the Socceroos for the full 90 minutes. As I’m writing this early, by the time you read it you’ll know the result. For those of you who want to know, I think the Socceroos will win 4-1 and score three goals in the last 20. It’s as big an occasion the Australian side has faced in recent history and the players are no doubt aware of the weight of expectation that is upon them. If they do what they have been doing, running the legs off everyone, they’ll go well. Good luck lads, go make yourselves proud.

BAD I’ve really been enjoying the Australian Tennis Open. As the fortnight has progressed, the cream has, for the most part, slowly risen to the top. Tennis, for me has always been strictly a spectator sport; when ones bum is as close to the ground as mine is; tennis proves ALMOST physically pointless. I just can’t do it. And so, over the years I have come to appreciate the talents on offer when the Opens or ‘Slams’ are on. What I can’t condone at this year’s Aussie event is the Hi-Vis clothing. Although it has to

be said Canada’s Genie Bouchard in hot pink is easy on the eye… Surely those wearing Hi-Vis yellow – the same as the tennis ball – are aware that at some point during a match the ball may get ‘lost’ in the clothing. Even for a split second this could put off the opponent enough to see him/her drop it into the net. Don’t get me wrong here; I like the players wearing whatever they so choose but at the same time I love it when Wimbledon rolls around and everyone is in white. Traditions matter. The only colour I have issue with is the Hi-Vis yellow. I have done some ‘research’ (I googled it) on the rules regarding clothing and it seems it is dictated only by those hosting the tournament. When playing at Wimbledon players are required to wear all-white, a rule that was initially introduced in 1890 and updated in 1995 to clarify that players must wear ‘almost entirely white’ but are allowed a coloured trim of 1cm width. At the Australian Open, pros can ‘express themselves’ in any colour they - or their sponsors - choose. Rules simply stipulate that players can only have two commercial logos on their clothing, which must be clean and customarily acceptable tennis attire’. Why does Tennis get to be different? Cricketers have to wear neutral colours; those of you old enough will remember Dean Jones, rightly I might add, asking Windies great Curtly Ambrose to take off his white wrist-bands in a one-day match. Didn’t go so well for ‘Deano’ but he was right to do so. Squash players are not supposed to wear dark colours, as the ball gets lost. Although I have noticed this ‘rule of etiquette’ slowly disappearing with the younger generations win-at-all-cost attitude. It’s a generic statement and I mean no offence but tell me I’m wrong. So too, it seems Tennis etiquette has become an outdated ‘fad’. That’s why Wimbledon will always be my favourite tournament. There’s something to be said for tradition.

UGLY Still on Tennis, what do we think of Nick Kyrgios? The man can play and at the time of writing had moved into the quarter finals with a stunning come-from-behind five set victory over Andreas Seppi. It’s the first time since 2005 Australia has managed to get someone past the fourth round. Kyrgios’ 5-7, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 8-6 win in three

hours and 34 minutes was something else. The sheer display of talent was there for all to see and love. Unfortunately, the emotive, expletive filled outbursts that have dominated headlines. Technically speaking, had the umpire applied the law to Kyrgios, he could have easily been disqualified from the game. I loved it! I want passion, I crave excitement and most of all I want to see a human. I used to watch John McEnroe as a kid just to see him explode; his wasn’t a bad talent either. On the other side of the coin I truly admired Pete Sampras for being able to do what he did the way he did; no fuss. Pete’s after match conferences were just as regimented. No doubt those closest to Kyrgios have asked him to tone it down a little, and fair enough too. We don’t want 12 year old kids all thinking it’s ok to punch out an F-Bomb whenever things don’t go their way, but gee it makes for compelling viewing. Kyrgios had people laughing and then cringing; he clearly loves a show. When he stopped mid-point to ask people where they were going the crowd roared with appreciation. The world is fascinated with the kid from Canberra. Kyrgios’ next match is against Scot Andy Murray on Tuesday and if Murray’s form holds true, it will be another big test of Kyrgios’ game. I’m going to put the kiss of death on Kyrgios and say he can beat Murray in four.

Japan is a vital trading partner for Australia, with the two-way trade between the countries reaching $72.2 billion in 2013-2014 – more than 10 per cent of Australia’s total trade. This new free trade agreement will give Australians, and many Bathurst businesses, greater opportunities in fast-expanding markets, according to local federal member, John Cobb. He told Bathurst City Life the options were endless for the region - with agriculture, forestry, mining, manufacturing, processing and horticulture - just some of the industries that can benefit from this agreement. “Bathurst has always performed well on the international stage and with this agreement coming after similar deals with China and Korea, there’s never been a better time than now to look into your overseas export options,” he noted.

Western Stores COMPILED BY A BATHURST HISTORIAN MANY OLDER Bathurstians will be aware of the name ‘The Western Stores’ and ‘Edgleys’ however few will realise that the history of the renowned establishments actually goes back well over 115 years. It was the formation of two groups of stores in country New South Wales in the 1890s, as the colonies moved

closer towards Federation, which would eventually lead to the formation of The Western Stores’ conglomerate in 1916. This photo shows the store in William Street in the 1970s. On 1st March, 1916, during the Great War, five stores became ‘The Western Stores’ with their main office located fairly centrally, this being in Dubbo. To be known as “The Western Stores Ltd” a board was elected with Mr. J.G. Brown as the Chairman. Mr. G.E.
