Tourists and locals alike now have a chance to visit the many wonderful cultural facilities in Bathurst with the new cultural entry pass, after last week's launch of the 'C Bathurst Pass'. DAVE RANKINE The C Bathurst Pass is a new way to experience and explore Bathurst’s history and heritage. The new pass provides a discounted entry into a range of wonderful cultural attractions including the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum, Chifley home, National Motor Racing Museum and the Bathurst District historical Society Museum. Plus a discount at the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery gift shop. Bathurst Deputy Mayor, Ian North told Bathurst City Life the development of the pass has been three years in the making. “Leading into the bicentenary celebrations next year, it is great to see Bathurst’s cultural assets being promoted.

“We have some of the best cultural facilities in NSW. Creating opportunities and reasons for more people to visit and experience them is crucial to the overall prosperity of our city,” he noted. “The C Bathurst Pass gives the local community and visitors an incentive to visit multiple facilities and in turn experience more of our rich history and heritage. Cr North has been a strong advocate for a combined cultural facilities pass. “The new cultural pass is a great Christmas present or gift. It also encourages visitors to stay longer in our city. With five facilities to enjoy it’s a cost effective way for people to experience and explore a range of attractions.

Appiwork Winner of the 2014 Apps4NSW ELISABETH CARTER Appiwork, Bathurst-based mobile app company, is the winner of the 2014 ‘Apps4NSW’ competition for the State Records category. The competition is the first of its kind and is run to encourage and capture innovative ideas in the public sector and use public data to create useful tools for people in NSW. Appiworks took the prize with their ‘Towns Trough Time’ app which helps make accessing historic images easy. “Our Towns Through Time app will be an easy, beautiful app where people can look at historical images of places that are important to them,” said Zoe Hida, Business Development Manager Appiwork. “Using tens of thousands of images from NSW State Records image library, it will be a wonderful resource for families, school groups, historians and especially older people who can reflect on how their hometowns have evolved.” “We are working with State Records to get this built and stay tuned for this becoming available on iTunes and Google Play in the coming months.” Zoe added. Momentum builds for epic ride DAVE RANKINE Momentum is gathering swiftly for local cyclist Rick Foster as he prepares to ride from Adelaide to Bathurst in March to raise money for charity.

Math whizzes take out top titles Year 6 Perthville Public School student Nicholas Adams has taken out third prize in this year's Newcastle Permanent Primary Schools Mathematics Competition. DAVE RANKINE Nicholas was joined by cathedral Primary school students anthony Tran (Year 6) and Fergus Baldwin (Year 5) who were both awarded high Distinctions (pictured). The students sat the 35-question exam paper along with 16,000 students from schools across the central west, hunter, central coast, Northern Rivers, Mid North

coast and New England. Newcastle Permanent cEo Terry Millett congratulated the students on their achievement. “Nicholas, anthony and Fergus have all done a tremendous job being amongst the top students in the Northern Region,” Mr. Millett said. “it’s clear the students have a true gift for mathematics – i’m sure we’ll see great things from them in the years to come.

Last week, local business man Bruce Bollam, joined the cause with a generous donation of $2,500 towards Rick’s “A Little Adventure” which is raising money and awareness for Crohns and Colitis research and the Westmead Children’s Hospital. Mr. Bollam told Bathurst City Life that he was always admired and is willing support people who get up and do things for themselves and others, and Rick’s ride was example of this. “I didn’t know much about Crohns before I spoke to Rick, but hearing about what his daughter went through and what he was preparing to do to raise money to help fight the disease, I was very impressed,” he said. “It is an extremely worthwhile cause and I wish him all the luck in the world during what will be an epic journey next year.” Rick said he was extremely appreciative at the donation and took the opportunity to thank Mr. Bollam and everyone else who has gotten behind the charity ride since its inception earlier this year.

“The competition has been running for more than 30 years now and continues to be very popular with students, as the numbers show again this year.” The Newcastle Permanent Primary schools Mathematics competition began in 1981 and challenges students to complete the exam without using calculators, rulers or geometrical instruments.

Bathurst business licks competition Bathurst business Annie's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlour has scooped the 'People's Choice' award in NSW Fair Trading's 'I love my local business' competition. DAVE RANKINE

Annie’s Ice Cream owner, Lisa Pitt, was over the moon at the news the business won the People’s Choice award in the recent “I love my local business” competition recently.

In a competition celebrating good business practices, it was not surprising that the muchloved Bathurst business was recognised as the most loved in nSW. The judges were particularly moved by the entry for annie’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlour made by Ronnie Eldridge-Bowman. “annie’s ice cream is a local legend and the outstanding quality of their food and service has not changed over the decades. I went there as a child with

my family and memories continue as I now take my child there,” the entry read. “The smell entices the tastebuds and the rock legend setting of the place adds to nostalgic feel.” Running from October 13th to november 9th, the Facebook competition asked nSW consumers to briefly describe why their favourite local business is the best in town. 719 entries were received, celebrating local businesses for great products and service, community involvement, or for just providing a feel-good experience.

Christmas is normally a time of rejoicing. But there have been a lot of long faces around recently, particularly in cricketing circles. The reason for this is understandable with the tragic death of Aussie batsman, Phil Hughes. But far from being polar opposites, paradoxically, death and Christmas are closely related. At the most obvious level Christmas is about new life – the new-born life of Jesus. But Christmas is also about death, or rather the conquest of death. The Bible tells us that Jesus came into the world to give his life on the cross; he came to die for our sins, so that we humans need not die. And that’s why Christmas is such a time of rejoicing: because through Jesus, sin and death are defeated. But there is another factor in the Christmas story. John, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples puts it this way: “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” If you don’t already have the gift of the son, through believing and trusting in him, why not give yourself the best Christmas gift ever, by putting your faith in Jesus, who gives life forever?

On the weekend of December 6th and 7th, Joey scouts from 3rd Bathurst and 3rd Orange mobs had a great weekend based on a theme of Super Heroes here in Bathurst. Activities included a number of crafts and special games that related to the Super Hero theme. Over the weekend the meals were prepared and cooked by 3rd Bathurst Venturers based at the Scout Hall in Parish Lane, while the weekend was lead by Jacinta Heaton newly appointed Joey Scout Leader with many helpers including other leaders and parent helpers. The weekend had a special guest, Ben Williamson, the Regional Commissioner for the Golden West Region.

Thumbs down to no safe crossing in the ALDI area of Russell Street. It can be risky trying to reach the doctor, pathology and physio all across the street in that spot. Thumbs up to all the people of Bathurst that decorate their homes at Christmas for others to enjoy. Thank you.

As parts of George Street have started having new parking lines marked to assist with the 45 degree rear angle, Bathurst City Life could not help but notice this driver in Keppel Street recently. The very loose interpretation of the 45-degree angle, mixed with the extreme closeness to the adjoining vehicle, are more fodder for calls that parking lines across the city cannot come soon enough. With no guides in many of the popular parking locations other than the eastern side of George Street, Bathurst City Life welcomes the addition of further parking lines in town to alleviate issues like this into the future.

Gastroenteritis in Bathurst children Bathurst Health Service is experiencing an increase in young children with gastroenteritis presenting to the Emergency Department. This is likely to reflect gastroenteritis circulating in the community. Gastroenteritis is highly infectious and the Health District encourages all members of the public to be alert and ensure they take the necessary precautions. It is requested that the public only present to the hospital in emergency medical situations. If you require urgent medical attention call 000 and seek medical assistance immediately. Gastroenteritis is most

often spread through direct contact with an infected person. Symptoms of viral gastroenteritis may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain, headache and muscle aches. The most effective way to avoid viral gastroenteritis is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and running water for 10 seconds before handling and eating food, and always wash your hands after using the toilet. Dehydration may follow bouts of vomiting and diarrhoea, therefore people with gastroenteritis should rest and increase the amount of fluids they drink.

Stan Williams Macquarie Safety When the popular community recycling facility The Junktion needed to update its safety procedures recently, Stan Williams was more than happy to oblige.

DAVE RANKINE The owner of Macquarie Safety helped prepare the emergency evacuation mapping and advise on safety procedures for both The Junktion and The Bargain Centre, who is owner by Central west Care. Stan said having up-to-date safety plans in place meant the businesses better served the needs of staff safety, as well as the large number of volunteers and customers who walk through the doors.

“we saw a need for the organisations and were all too happy to donate the time and resources to help them get up to speed with their safety,” Stan noted. Junktion manager, elloit redwin told Bathurst City Life Stan’s offer was generously accepted. “we can’t thank him enough,” elliot said. “having someone come in and assist us like this really gets us on the front foot with safety and improves the peace of mind for all involved in the business. “we appreciate it immensely.”

Four wheel drives on show

Earlier this month, the Central West Four Wheel Drive Club members were invited to display their vehicles at Supercheap Bathurst at its Club Plus Night. Those in attendance were Stan (patrol), Bethne (pajero), Mark and Toni (patrol complete with new turbo), Bruce (patrol), Warren (courier), John and Shirley (patrol), Drew (ranger), renee (colarado), Graham (80 series), Matthew (Triton) and Wheelie in the big red renault who briefly tried to upstage the fire truck. club member Stan Williams reported that Mark was proudly showing off his new turbo and exhaust system, but was distracted by a shiny wheel spanner in Supercheap, which

he purchased after ensuring that it would fit. “It was mentioned that we had never seen so many clean and shiny 4WDs together in one place, a credit to their owners,” Stan Joked. “The raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade showed up with Santa on board, who handed out lollies and allowed the kids to climb into the truck. The kids had a great time touching all the buttons and pulling all levers,” he added. “Supercheap also supplied drinks and cake, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. “Thank you to everyone who volunteered and arrived with polished and sparkling vehicles for the display,” Stan concluded.

Plenty to see at PCYC Paul Toole MP last week took the time to catch up with Nathan Brennan of the PCYC to see completed projects at the facility and to hear of the implementations of a youth program. DAVE RANKINE

Senior Sergeant, Darrin Hammonds, Paul Toole and PCYC’s Nathan Brennan inspected the new PCYC facilities last week.

Mr. Toole said funding has been provided to the Bathurst PCYC Club for the installation of a sprung floor in the Gymnastic area, an upgrade to the Clubhouse and funding for a PArC Program.” “The PArC program is designed for young people aged between 12-17 years at risk of committing alcohol related offences,” Mr. Brennan explained. “The program aims to give participants the

skills to deal with peer pressure and make informed decisions about their behavior. “The program is run in partnership with Police Services who provide invaluable workshops and activities throughout the program.” Nathan welcomed Mr. Toole to the Club and told Bathurst City life the support given to the PCYC movement was vital. “The focus on youth in our community is a vital part of PCYC and we aim to provide a space for all to enjoy,” Nathan concluded.

WHO AM I?

I was born on March 31, 1943, in Queens, New York, with the Christian name Ronald. I spent most of the early 1960s working in musicals. I changed my first name because a friend suggested ‘Ronald’ didn’t suit me. In 1969 I married actress and dancer Georgianne Thon. I made my movie debut in 1968’s Me and My Brother; my first lead role was in The Mind Snatchers (1972). My performance in The Deer Hunter (1978) was an Oscar winner. I famously danced my way through Fatboy Slim’s music video Weapon of Choice in 2001. In 2001 I was nominated for another Oscar for my performance in Catch Me if You Can. My roles in Quentin Tarantino’s True Romance and Pulp Fiction have given me a loyal cult following.

It was a sea of picnic blankets and camp chairs at Machattie Park on Sunday night as every available patch of green grass was taken for the annual Christmas carols. An estimated crowd of more than 1000 converged on the centre of Bathurst for the annual event with Christmas hats, reindeer antlers and candles as far as the eye could see. The entertainment was broad and enjoyable from Ukulele groups to kids choirs and operatic tenors and the lines for ice creams, coffee and drinks were long but moved quickly as people got into the picnic spirit and sang well past 9.30pm. With just a week until Christmas, it was evident the yuletide spirit is alive and well in town and the countdown to Santa’s arrival draws nearer.

A highlight of the morning’s activities was the presentation of life membership to Mavis Markwick who has been involved in the support group in Bathurst for close to 40 years. Only one or two life memberships are given out each year across the country by the organisations, so for Mavis to receive one in 2014 was a real honour.

Residents fought to demolish building COMPILED BY a BaTHURST HISTORIaN This image from the Bathurst District Historical Society collection shows the market building on what is now King’s Parade being demolished in early December 1909. From 1833 after the Bathurst township was surveyed two areas had been set aside to be used for local markets and the conditions for use were set out as per

the Bathurst Market Act of 1865. One market was located near where the Ambulance Station is today on the corner of Durham and William Streets. This was known as the hay market and as the name implies was the location to sell hay and other produce such as corn, wheat, chaff, oats and other similar lines. The other was further up William Street opposite the then All Saints Church. The market buildings were constructed in 1871 and cost the Bathurst Municipal

Council around £1,800. Council’s idea was to rent it out but by the mid 1870s there were already people realising that the Market Building was not a success and there would be repeated problems with the tenants. The initial rent brought in over £120 per annum to the Council coffers. Almost from the start the smell and dusty location brought the ire of businesses and local residents.

an update: The Read Triplets 'Miracle House' Project Jemimah Read writes: So much has happened since the article about our ‘Miracle House’ project was first featured back in October. We needed to put the story of our triplets and their special needs out there. Thanks to Bob Holland of Orange/Bathurst City Life, and Tim Pankhurst of Dubbo Photo News, our story spread far across the Central West. We weren’t sure what would happen, but we were hopeful. Since that initial week, the response has been incredibly encouraging, to say the least. In just over 8 weeks people have donated upwards of $40,000 and pledged $20,000 of donations ‘in kind’ towards building an

accessible home (what we call our ‘Miracle House’) for our 8 year old triplets Anwen, Mahalah and Gideon. I must mention here that half of the donations have come from two separate, very generous families in Dubbo, to whom we are very grateful. When our story first featured on October the 23rd we had $36,000 towards our fundraising goal of $200,000. Now, two months later, we are at $77,000. We owe this to many hundreds of local people from all walks of life - the very young to the very old - individuals, families, businesses, sporting clubs, church groups and local banks and credit unions. Some have given $10, some have given $10,000. Whatever the amount, we have been incredibly grateful for every single dollar that people have entrusted us

with, out of the goodness of their hearts, because they believe that the ‘Miracle House’ can, and should, become a reality. Because they want to see three special children in a house that is specifically built to meet their special needs. How can we ever say thank you enough? Alongside this, in November we finally became the proud owners of a 5 acre block of land on the fringes of Canowindra, all ready to build on (see photo). We asked for the settlement day to coincide with Anwen, Mahalah and Gideon’s 8th birthday - it was symbolic of our hopes for the land- and it became an extra special day for our family and friends. With all of the above in mind, needless to say we are looking forward to what 2015 will bring. Currently we are grateful

to have a top notch building designer from Sydney working on our unique project, free of charge. When the plans are finalised sometime in the New Year, we will begin the process of preparing to build. Earthworks and a slab are on the top of the list. There is quite a journey ahead of us, and still a long way to go, but I am quietly hopeful that our ‘Miracle House’ will become a reality in time for Anwen, Mahalah and Gideon’s 9th birthday, next November.
