Saturday morning saw a fine but chilly start to the weekend with a number of volunteers taking to the Blayney Common for a tree planting morning. The plantings took on the ground which has become one of four sites of the “Racing to save the Mount Panorama Woodland” project. Hi friends Between you and me, I am stoked to report we have increased our print run again this week to 6,000 copies. The reason is that we have been running out of copies at our many stands across the region and have had to print a few more copies. It’s a great problem to have and another shot in the arm for the Bathurst staff who work tirelessly to bring the paper to you each week. Speaking of staff, the BCL team welcomed on board Mel Cronin as our new sales representative here in Bathurst. You can read all about Mel if you cast your eyes that way ===>. It is great to grow our staff each week and that brings our team to five with Mel’s arrival. Mel comes to us from a real estate background and is sure to bring a fresh approach to marketing and we hope our business clients appreciate her happy, smiling face and can-do attitude as much as we do. It seems that in the newspaper game, you are damned if you do, and damned if you don’t. Such was the response to the budget story we ran last week. It seems many of you have assumed our political allegiances here at BCL lie directly with the current federal and state governments. To those who quite vehemently suggested that in a few emails this week, let me tell you that politics plays no part in the stories we write. But reality certainly does. We are a down-to-earth publication, with down-toearth views. If we believe something is great – we will champion it, if we think it sticks we’ll say that to

and in the case of the some of the budget measures, if we believe they are a necessary evil – well that’s what we will report. Politics and media make nasty bed fellows – just ask Rupert Murdoch, watch Sky News or read a News Limited publication. At BCL, we are not so willing to nail our colours to any particular political mast. Which brings me to a local issue. I can’t work out the push for a public holiday to celebrate Bathurst’s bicentenary next year. Some sectors of the local media seem hell-bent on pushing the issue at every opportunity, even enlisting schools to take up the cause. OK so the flagstaff unveiling is taking place on a Thursday, but from what I can see, the Community Night Festival to celebrate the bicentenary is actually taking place on Saturday May 9th. From what I can see, the unveiling would be a great way to engage kids through a half-day school excursion, immediately nullifying the need for a public holiday. Between Easter, Anzac Day and another possible local holiday in early May, I can see why the Bathurst Business Chamber believes it would not be good for business. Don’t get me wrong, I am super-excited about celebrating this fabulous milestone in our community and like most Bathurstians we will be lining up for the festivities when the day comes around, but don’t we get enough Public Holidays as it is. Surely it is more Australian if we just all rang in work for a sicky that day instead…

The theme for next year’s books, australian Stars rising above, celebrates up and coming australians who are making positive changes in their community. White Pages spokesperson, Sarah Simpson, told Bathurst city Life they could be young entrepreneurs championing a new idea, people achieving big things beyond their years, mentors supporting local talent or young people who are an inspiration to their peers. “The main criteria – these rising stars are using their success to give back,” she stressed.

Sarah said locals actively committed to improving their town are examples of the type of people who could be nominated. “We are looking to highlight Bathurst’s rising stars. “There’s been a lot of talk about Gen y and Z shying away from responsibility, but we’ve found younger generations are realising volunteering isn’t just for the retired, they are giving back to their communities and using their influence to help others just as much as the generations before them,” she added. “We’re calling on the Bathurst community to nominate a worthy local who epitomises what the community Project is all about, someone who is working hard to make positive changes and create brighter futures for locals.” To sweeten the deal, those nominating could win the chance to donate $500 to their chosen charity in exchange for their nomination. Nominations close on 11 July 2014.

If community members haven’t already had their say on their vision for Bathurst, they can still play their part by completing the ‘Imagine Bathurst’ online survey that can be accessed at www.surveymonkey.com/s/ ImagineBathurst. Launched in February, the consultation has been collecting feedback from local residents that will be used in the development of both the Bathurst Region Social Community Plan and the Bathurst Region Community Safety Plan 2015-2019. ‘Imagine Bathurst’ has so far been a success, with residents embracing the opportunity to speak with Council through face-toface interviews and an online survey. Bathurst City Life last week welcomed Mel Cronin to its ranks as its new sales consultant. Mel brings with her a wealth of sales experience and has been living and working in Bathurst for the past four years after moving here from Lithgow. Why did you choose to move to Bathurst a few years ago? Bathurst has a lot to offer in the ways of employment, education and growth which was why I made the decision to move to Bathurst after meeting my now fiancé. I have been working in Bathurst for four years now and moved here three years ago from my home-town, Lithgow. You have retail experience?

For 6 years I worked in the retail industry where I gained vital customer service experience. Skills which I still use to this day. What other experience do you bring to Bathurst City Life? I have also spent three years in Real Estate. I started out in Administration and for the past two years have been working in Property Management. Being a Property Officer really moulded me into the mature young adult I am today and gave me a real ability to deal with so many different people in our community. What do you enjoy when you’re not working? I really enjoy my sport especially hockey, water skiing, football and motor racing on the weekends.

What excites you about the role at Bathurst City Life? I have been given the exciting opportunity to be the Bathurst Sales Consultant for BCL. This new adventure will have me liaising with Bathurst business owners and helping them market their products and services. What are your goals for your role with us? My goal is to educate Bathurst business owners about BCL and what sets it apart from other newspapers. Locals love to support local businesses, so I want to increase their awareness of us as a viable local paper and, in turn, help them experience the City Life difference. In just one year, readership of City Life has doubled and that trend is set to continue.

Let’s get real! Recently, seven leading journalists were asked several questions about how the media reported news today. It was interesting because most said that news reporting should be factual, fair and balanced. Most also agreed that opinion pieces on the news should be clearly identified as opinions and not as news. Why I found this interesting is because now, news reporting is anything but factual, fair and balanced and opinion pieces tend to overshadow real news. If a reporter or news service has a particular bend, you can bet that anything they report will be slanted towards their agenda. A well known example was how Rupert Murdoch’s papers blatantly favoured the Coalition in the last election. For now however, I just want to mention the federal budget and how its reporting has been anything but factual, fair and balanced. I think it’s fair to say that this budget has been painted by the media as one of the worst ever and a great number of people feel they are being totally screwed. At the top of the unpopularity list are the $7 doctor’s gap fee, the changes to university fees and how much of the pain is going to impact on low income earners. These three things alone have been hammered by the media and fanned by the opposition to such an extent that the government is not only being painted in a very unfavourable light but more than that, the unfair and unbalanced reporting is probably doing untold damage to our economy.

If the reporting was fair and balanced, most people would accept what the government is saying - that as a nation, we simply cannot afford to keep spending the way we are. If the reporting was fair and balanced, most people would also have a better understanding of why the government chose the particular areas they did for the cutbacks etc. Of course, whenever there are cutbacks, some people will suffer. That’s the nature of belt tightening, some things have to go. If the media did their job in a fair and responsible manner, they would help sell the government’s message rather than just hammer to death and beat up those scenarios that they know will get people stirred up. For example, the media could put into context what the budget will cost a typical family each year and then suggest ways to offset this amount. I did an exercise a few years back to see where our family was wasting money and I found savings of a few thousand dollars a year could be made simply by changing our banking arrangements and looking at how we used our power and phones more efficiently, among other things. We all have areas where we can save money if we look hard enough, no doubt about it. In my view the budget is just another fact of life, it won’t be anywhere near as bad as the media is making it out to be...but it needs to be given a chance. For that to happen however, we all need to be more responsible and get real, especially the media.

More than 3.1 million pine seedlings will be planted across the Central West in the coming months as part of the Forestry Corporation’s annual planting program.

Winter planting underway in Central West State Forests Winter plantings have commenced across the Central West as part of the Forestry Corporation’s annual planting program. DAVe RANKiNe Pine seedlings will be planted in 2,800 hectares of state-owned plantations near Oberon, Bathurst and Orange following recent harvesting of some areas. Bathurst City life caught up with Forestry Corporation of nsW’s Regional Manager, Jason Molkentin, on a chilly early winter afternoon as three crews commenced the planting which will continue across the region until August. “each winter we re-establish around 8,500 hectares of pine plantations across

nsW and about 30 per cent of these are in the Central West,” Jason said. “Over the next three months, we’ll have crews hand planting seedlings across the region to re-establish the plantations well ahead of the drier summer months. “An experienced planter can get about 2,000 seedlings into the ground in one day and we expect to plant a total of 3.1 million seedlings in the Central West before the spring. “We plant pine seedlings during winter because they are dormant during the cooler months, which means we can transport the seedlings more easily and get

them in the ground in time for their spring growth period,” he noted. “The ground in each plantation has been carefully prepared, cultivated and treated with herbicide for weed control to give the seedlings the best start possible.” Jason said the Forestry Corporation has around 200,000 hectares of pine plantations in nsW. “The Central West is the hub of our northern softwoods region, which extends to the Queensland border and delivered more than $60 million of revenue last year,” he concluded.

Renshaw to attend Commonwealth Games DAVe RANKiNe Bathurst cyclist, Mark Renshaw, has been selected to again represent his country, this time at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow Scotland. At 31, Renshaw is the elder statesman of the seven-man road cycling team which includes some of the biggest names amongst the Australian ranks of the propeloton. Renshaw has tasted success at Commonwealth Games level, winning gold on the track in 2002 as part of the mens pursuit team. In 2014, Renshaw has reunited with Mark Cavendish at the Omega Pharma Cycling Team and will again act as the sprinter’s lead-out man at a host of events including next month’s Tour de France. The Glasgow Games begin on July 23rd, with the road race to take place on August 3rd, an interesting scheduling conflict given Le Tour does not finish until July 27th. Renshaw will line up for Australia alongside fellow tour riders Simon Clarke, Luke Durbridge, Michael Hepburn, Rohan Dennis, Nathan Haas and Caleb Ewen who round out the team.

Public lecture questions Conservatorium relevance DAVE RANKINE The Mitchell Conservatorium, in partnership with the School of Teacher Education at CSU is inviting community members to attend a free public lecture next Monday. The lecture is being given by Graham Sattler, the Executive Director of the Mitchell Conservatorium and is titled “Community connections: is the Conservatorium Model Relevant in 21st Century Regional Australia?” It is being conducted at Charles Sturt University and will be held in building 1432. The afternoon will commence at 3pm with live music, while the lecture will commence at 4pm. The afternoon will conclude with light refreshments. The unassuming artist behind some beautiful work David Rozetsky struck me as a typical brooding artist — sort of unhappy looking, scruffy beard, and with a tortured look that seems well honed by artists for generations. DAVE RANKINE As he lined up for a photograph at the opening of his “True self” exhibition last Friday night at Bathurst Regional Gallery, I couldn’t work out whether he was bored, jetlagged or just over having his photo taken by the array of snappers on hand. I suspected the latter – most photographers seem way happier behind the lens than in

front of it. But while the artist was at best, lack-lustre at the opening – his work speaks for itself. One of Australia’s finest video artists, David Rosetzky creates intensely beautiful lensbased works exploring identity, subjectivity and relationships. Drawing on fifteen years of practice ‘True self: David Rosetzky selected Works’ presents early portraits and longer duration videos,

photographs, photo-collages and sculptures, revealing telling relationships between these aspects of his practice. The exhibition not only allows us to see the consistency of Rosetzky’s vision, but to engage with a trajectory in his video that moves from lo-fi, singular portraits that borrow advertising’s aura, through to cinematic, long-duration work.

Memory of a legend on show at Museum Following the recent passing of the great racing driver Jack Brabham, I was made aware that the Bathurst Motor Museum hosts some of the most respected examples of his racing vehicles amongst its collection. DAVE RANKINE No fewer than three cars are currently on display including his famous 1967 formula Two car which Brabham built himself to race internationally. The car was driven by Sir Jack and frank Gardner during the 1967 season, before they were loaned to frank williams and Piers Courage in the 1968 formula Two series. one of the more impressive cars on display is a 1976 Torana that was raced in the Bathurst 1000 by Sir Jack and racing legend Stirling Moss. The car is as famous for the duo that raced it, as the classic 70s muscle-car styling on display. By the time 1976 had rolled around Jack had won three formula one crowns, while Stirling was regarded the finest racing driver never to have won a world championship. However, the pair’s tilt at the race ended on the starting grid when the car stalled and was rearended when the starter’s flag dropped. It was eventually repaired but only managed 37 laps of the 161. Museum manager Tim Pike said the cars have received some attention since Sir Jack’s passing but he invited community members to take in the history involved with the racing legend. “The Museum is not just about racing at Mount Panorama,” he noted. “we have one of the best collections of motorbikes in the country and it is certainly worth a visit as the cars and bikes are changing all the time.”

Surely you can do without this addiction for a short period of time and concentrate on not walking into other pedestrians. Thumbs down to motorists who double park near school when dropping off or picking up children. This practice is very dangerous as you create bottlenecks and cause unnecessary safety issues for the children. Thumbs up to God for making such a lovely planet for us to live on. How agonising it is for those who try to come here believing that we are a friendly welcoming country who can give hope to terrified seekers fleeing persecution and seeking hope for a better life here, only to find that ones destination is an impoverished third world country like Nauru or PNG.

Can we be surprised when such uncertainty for their future creates depression, sense of hopelessness, riots and death? We need to abolish the needless expense of offshore processing and settlement, turning the boats around policy and increase refugee intake to at least 20,000 and actively bring more asylum seekers in who are languishing in Indonesia or in refugee camps. The risk of drowning by boat just shows how desperate these people are. The acrimonious stance of our political leaders and media commentators is tearing the soul of our country apart. Surely Australia is big enough and decent enough to embrace a compassionate approach to asylum seekers in an orderly and expanded

I agree more should be done to support those people wanting to make a fresh start in this country and welcome them here. However, I acknowledge that it is a complex issue for our politicians to manage. There is no easy solution to the many people who attempt to make a fresh start in this great country, but who attempt that through illegal measures. That said, personally I believe there are probably better ways to manage these illegal immigrants than to detain them for an indeterminate period of time often in conditions worse than those they were fleeing from. As you rightly point out we are a big country with plenty of room. But I also think it is important

to remember that country communities like ours suffer under the burden of fewer public resources, funding and support from state and federal government than our big city neighbours and jobs are scarce, even before an influx of potential new unskilled asylum seekers who are resettled away from the big cities. Those few jobs we have in country towns are vital for our own community’s well-being and prosperity. Perhaps the former Labor government might have been wise to invest some of their stimulus money into worthwhile job seeking opportunities rather than to throw it away on over-inflated building projects, thus allowing more chances for new settlers to find a home in regional communities, without adding extra burdens to an already over-stressed welfare organisation. Some encouraging economic news CONTRIBUTED Last week, the Australian Bureau of Statistics released updated information on the state of the economy. Analysts suggest it was encouraging news and showed that construction of homes is picking up, while export volumes increased by the highest percentage since September 2000, real gross domestic product increased by 1.1 per cent in the March quarter, and

the Budget forecast of 2.75 per cent growth in 2013-14 is on track. The jobs growth – 106,000 new jobs created in the economy over the first four months of this year including 79,000 full-time jobs – is offsetting what some prophesised about the state of the economy, and is helping to keep the Budget forecast on track. The national accounts showed that the economy is resilient and that our country has a solid foundation for growth. Analysts believe these are good figures and strong foundations. Further, the proposed abolition of the Carbon Tax and Mining Tax on 1st July is forecast to assist job creation and encourage investment.

Huge support for Photography exhibition The Evans Council building was the host this year for the annual Evans Art Council Photographic Exhibition and Competition. run exhibition. local photographer, Geoff Stockton was, this year, awarded the best in show print for a beautiful waterfall scene shot in colour. It was a stand-out print amongst those exhibited. Mr. Stockton was also involved with the organisation of the event assisting the evans Art Council with sponsorship leading up to the event, as was a worthy winner of the top award.

WHO AM I?

I was born September 5, 1973, in Florence, Italy, but after my parents divorced, was brought up in the USA by my mother. For the first nine years of my life, I was brought up as part of the cult, Children of God. I legally emancipated myself from my mother’s care at age 15. I made my film debut in the comedy Encino Man (1992). I gained commercial success with a role in the first of Wes Craven’s hugely popular Scream series. I once dated controversial gothrocker Marilyn Manson but we broke up in 2001, the same year I scored a full-time role on the fantasy series Charmed. In 2007 I was in a car accident and had plastic surgery to repair damage to my face. More recently I’ve starred in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof.

Sarah What are your plans for the future? I plan on furthering my music career at Graz University in Austria with the French horn and singing. My back up plans are to study piano at the Sydney Conservatorium. I’d also love to teach – teaching is the ultimate, or playing in a top orchestra. What instruments do you play? Socceroos do us proud It was a weekend where too much sport was just not enough. The Socceroos began their tilt at World Cup glory, the men’s and women’s hockey teams had mixed results at the Hock World Cup, I was distracted on and off by Le Man on Speed Channel, the Swannies got up for a win, as did the Wallabies. Yes it was certainly a busty weekend in sport. Like most sports nuts, I was up at the gentleman’s hour of 8am on Saturday to watch the Socceroos take on Chile – going down gallantly 3-1. I cast my mind back to 2006 and I was fortunate enough to watch Tim Cahill slot the winner against the Japanese from the stands in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The year’s opener was not so rewarding – but still a great spectacle. Just for a moment, spare a thought for Australian soccer and the hill it has to climb to get here against most other football playing nations. Brazil, for example, has a population of 200 million with only one football code and virtually no opposition from rival sports. Australia has a population of less than 25 million with four football codes competing for the best athletes. It shows just how much the Socceroos are punching above their weight at the World Cup. As an example, Rio de Janeiro’s oldest soccer team, the Fluminense Football Club has 600,000 football club members and are not even the biggest club in the country. Anyway, Tim Cahill has again stamped himself on this year’s Cup from a Socceroo perspective. And I have to wonder - is he now our greatest player of all-time. Certainly no other Aussie has scored goals at three World Cups but it’s a big call considering we have produced champions like Mark Viduka and Harry Kewell among other greats. Fox Sports commentator and former team mate Mark Bosnich is now convinced Cahill is the best of them all. During Saturday’s telecast he was convinced

the moment our 34-yearold super striker inspired the Socceroos stirring comeback with the magnificent header against Chile on Saturday morning. “If we’re talking about Australia’s greatest right now, it has to be Tim Cahill. You can’t beat anyone who has scored goals at the last three World Cups. To do it against the best players and best teams in the world is just a phenomenal performance.” Like most others, I was absolutely blown away by the Australian fight back Saturday morning. At two-nil down after 14 minutes I feared for the worst like everyone else and the vast majority of teams around the world would have just capitulated. “That fighting spirit is just part of Australia’s DNA. They were outstanding. Closer to home and the footballing juggernaut, that is Bathurst Public School girls soccer team, continued unabated last week with the ladies enjoying a 4-0 win over cross town rivals South Bathurst Public School. The win takes the girls onto the regional Gala Day in Mudgee in two weeks time. Perhaps inspired by the World Cup fever which is sweeping across sport at present on the back of the gutsy opening performance in Brazil – the girls are showing great flare and team work – taking their record to three wins from three games. Meanwhile, in Rugby circles – commentators have described the Wallaby’s dour 6-0 win over France in Melbourne as a “great win”. Seriously fellas, I think a few of you are getting ahead of yourselves. The last time a Wallaby side was 0-0 at half time was 1951 – not a great advertisement for the attacking rugby we have all come to know. In a town where the local sporting code regularly kicks 100 plus points during a game – describing a 6-0 win in perfect playing conditions, is deadset having a lend of yourselves.

Well I watched nearly all of the Socceroos first game at the 2014 World Cup and like everyone, thought they did ok. I also think, like most, that they could’ve done better. A Tim Cahill header late in the first half got the Socceroos back into the game, and a barnstorming second half almost, but not quite, produced an equaliser as the Socceroos were left to rue a dreadful first 15 minutes when they conceded two goals to a rampant Chile which, in the end, proved decisive. The South Americans played with verve and wonderful technical ability, at pace and with fluency as they took control of the game from the outset.

In contrast the Australians looked ponderous and out of their depth as they chased shadows and struggled to get any time on the ball while Chile ran and dribbled, passed and moved in the manner prescribed by their Argentine coach, Jorge Sampaoli. He linked up on the right with Charles Aranguiz, who did remarkably well to keep the ball in play and prevent Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan from getting it before he flighted a cross towards the penalty area. Eduardo Vargas got enough on the ball to direct a downward header to Sanchez, who controlled before coolly shooting past Ryan. The Socceroos somehow

steadied their listing ship, regained composure and began to find a way back into the game. Still, Valdivia, Sanchez and Mauricio Isla were combining cleverly, and Arturo Vidal shot just wide, and a third Chilean goal seemed more likely. But a Tommy Oar long shot, and a driving run and shot over from Matthew Leckie showed there was some life in the Socceroos as they began to get some thrust in the opposition rear. And then, as has been so often the case, the talisman that is Tim Cahill struck in the 35th minute to rock the Chileans and bring fresh hope to the outsiders.

Kaymer wins big At the time of writing, with two holes to play, Germany’s Martin Kaymer has the U.S. Open wrapped up. Kaymer was sitting at -9 with his nearest opponent, Ricky Fowler, sitting at -2. He has led from day one when he shot 65 and then to everyone’s astonishment, repeated the feat on day two when not many others were able to shoot under par at the difficult Pinehurst Course. World number one Adam Scott, who had struggled with his short game on the way to an opening 73, clawed his way back up the leader-board with a fourbirdie 67 to end the second round at level par, 10 strokes off the pace. “I needed a good one today,” said the Australian. “Hit some good shots and made some putts. It still felt like hard work, but I’m very happy with the score. “For him (Kaymer) to come out today and back it up (his opening 65) is super. If he does it for two more days, then we’re all playing for second spot.” In the last 11 years of the U.S. Open, eight winners have come from outside the U.S. showing just how global a sport golf really is. Kaymer finished the tournament at -9 with a big par saver on the last, whilst Fowler fell back to equal second with dual heart-transplant recipient Erik Compton at -1.

How will you ever know if they can handle the big time if, when given the perfect opportunity, you don’t throw them in there? Quite often having better players around you makes one play better and you just may un-earth the next superstar! One thing I can promise you Des, it wouldn’t have hurt given the result.

Wallabies continue winning In front of a paltry 27,189, the Wallabies shrugged off a controversial no-try ruling and a late raid by a re-energised France to claim a 6-0 win and series bragging rights in Melbourne on Saturday. The tryless victory certainly won’t win any more fans in Melbourne but the ARU will continue to push into that market. The Wallabies performance was patchy at best and included three missed shots for goal and many errors from players we have come to expect more from. The French attacked the Wallabies line at length in the last quarter of the match but were unable to penetrate the line. It will give them much needed confidence to go all-out for a face-saving win in Sydney this week. Australian captain Michael Hooper said on Friday the Wallabies would need to find a way to win in Melbourne and they did, shrugging

off Ben McCalman’s disallowed try and a suffocating defensive effort from the visitors to build a victory off the smell of an oily rag. Credit must go to France for doing their defensive homework and killing off every ounce of the Wallabies’ ball and therefore momentum. France went on the attack, targeting the breakdown much harder than last week, when Australia enjoyed largely uncontested possession. Michael Hooper made the biggest call of his new captaincy with a call to kick for goal in the 52nd minute. The Wallabies had been pressuring the French try line but were being repelled at every turn. When referee Barnes pinged the visitors for being offside, Hooper pointed to the posts and Foley obliged, registering the first points of the match in the 53rd minute. In other world Rugby tests, the kiwis held off the English for the second week in a row with a one point 28-27 victory and the South Africans belted Wales 38-16.

My take on it.. Good I popped over to Endeavour Oval last Saturday to watch the local derby between Orange City and Emus. It was a much publicised affair and of course being an old Emu I was keen to watch both sides go at it. With thanks to Emus mentor Andrew Logan and his coaching staff, I was given inside access to the Emus side. I went to training the Thursday prior to the game and just generally hung around, watching and enjoying the intensity that goes into a local derby. I’m quite sure it was the same on the other side of town; the hits were a little harder, voices were a little lower, focus was a little greater. The team ran together, going through their warm-up prior to splitting into backs and forwards. The coach constantly chatting, mentioning the “little things”. The ‘one percenters’ that can often make the difference. It was particularly intense and I loved it! When they split I naturally gravitated towards the backs (yes, despite my body shape and giant head, I was a back) and watched the lads go through their work. As usual any dropped ball was met with disgust and the move run again. The lines practised and precise; the boys looked pretty good. I was even asked my opinion by the coaches and was embarrassed when I could not offer one! (Yes, this may also be hard to believe for some) I wandered over to the forwards and they were doing what forwards do; grunting, groaning and generally complaining about not getting their names up in lights as much as the pretty boy backs despite doing all the work. They too operated with much intensity. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and then realised I was freezing and remembered why I also enjoy being retired; gee that Endeavour Oval gets cold. Unfortunately for both sides the Rugby on Saturday never reached any great heights due to the rain and sleet that continually swept the ground, turning it into a bog. Not to mention

the six games that were played, un-necessarily I think, on the main ground prior to the firsts kicking off. Most pleasing though, was despite the weather, and the fact that most knew the forecast was not good, the crowd was impressive. With a good number braving the elements on both sides of the ground. That’s the thing about a local derby, you’re not just playing to get one up over your crosstown rivals; you are representing more than ever those that have come before you. Played in the same jumper as you, sweated on the same paddock as you. They are the ones groaning with frustration, as do you, whenever you put down a pass or miss a tackle. They paid for the privilege of watching you with their hard earned and it means just as much to them as it does you. And this transcends sport, it does not matter what sport you’re competing in, a local derby always, ALWAYS, matters more. I was invited to sit beside the coaches throughout the game (thanks again) but figured they didn’t need to hear me shouting unknowledgeable obscenities and so declined, but did catch up in the dressing shed after the game. And what a privilege it was. The sentiment from the Emus squad was one of regret; the one that got away. With the game being an 8-all draw, I can only imagine the feeling in the Orange City dressing shed was exactly the same. I can’t wait for the next one!

Bad Righto if you think I’m a seriously one-eyed Roosters supporter look away now… In the game last week between the Roosters and the Knights, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves was accused by the Knights of “deliberately targeting opponents with his elbows”. “I personally think he runs with it raised and I know there’s a few blokes in my team who will back me up”. Said knights captain Kurt Gidley. The Knights Jeremy Smith was caught across the collar bone during one such “deliberate act”

ONE AND TWO IN THE WORLD The Hockeyroos believe the world No.1 ranking is within their reach they have bridged the gap with the Netherlands, despite going down 2-0 in the World Cup final last Saturday. The Australian women were valiant, but ultimately outclassed by a relentless Dutch outfit spurred on by a 15,000-strong partisan crowd in The Hague. It followed a defeat by the same margin in the group stages and confirmed the Dutch team’s place as the world’s best - but Australia coach Adam Commens believes the gap is narrowing quickly and he is optimistic his side could be on top by the time the 2016 Olympic Games roll around. “I think it will be a tough ask. “They obviously have a large pool of talent coming through and a good group of coaching staff. “It will be difficult. But I think it’s not unsurmountable.” Arriving in Holland ranked fourth in the world, Australia cemented their place among the top teams once again by claiming silver

and left the field hurt. I am in no way sticking up for the Roosters here; more for every player. Nearly all players carry their arms in such a manner that protects them from high shots; it’s just how the game is played these days. As long as the arm is carried a certain way, most incidents go through each weekend un-noticed. Waerea-Hargreaves’ did not cock his elbow at any stage, nor did he lead with, or thrust it toward, any opposition players. He caught a couple of them with it but that’s how it goes when you try to tackle a bloke in a ball and all style tackle. And it here that I take issue; the tackling style of today’s players. Head knocks are more common than ever in the modern game. And now players can make accusations such as the Knights have and hide behind the line “we’re supposed to be protecting players”. Well let me throw this little nugget your way; ever see any of the best tacklers get hit in the collar bone/throat/head with an elbow? Ever? No, me neither. Quite simply the better tacklers, the “hitters” in the game, have the best tackling technique. They rarely get head knocks and most often the worst injury is the “stinger” to the shoulder from the solid contact with the opponents’ hips or rib-cage. And you can come at me with all the junk you want about having to protect from the off-load but think about this; when was the last time someone hit in a good, legal, technically correct tackle from Steve Matai et al, get the ball away? Not very bloody often I can promise you. During last Sunday’s footy show, Trevor Gillmeister was on the show and during the course of the interview footage was showed of the “Axe” at his best. Not only did he never get an elbow to the collar bone or throat, no-one ever off loaded the ball either, so effective and perfect was Gillmeister’s technique. Now I agree that players have to be protected. The cannon-ball tackle has been eradicated, lifting past horizontal has been banned (to a point at least), the chicken wing… the list goes on. But now what? Are the player not entitled to protect themselves? And this goes both ways; Waerea-Hargreaves (and the rest) should be able to protect themselves, equally the tacklers

and rising to second in the rankings. It is their best result in a major tournament since earning silver in the 2009 Champions Trophy. Australia did well to restrict the winning margin to just two goals - an achievement for which goalkeeper Rachael Lynch deserves enormous credit. Australia will now begin preparations for next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where they are the two-time defending gold medal winners. Meanwhile, the Kookaburras have become world champions once again, defending their World Cup title with a 6-1 demolition of the Netherlands. Powerful defender, and penalty corner specialist, Chris Ciriello was the hat-trick hero as Australia dismantled the Dutch to silence the raucous home crowd in the Hague last Sunday. The win confirms the Kookaburras place atop the world, and is their third World Cup triumph – defending their 2010 title.

should be able to protect themselves but they have to take some responsibility and start using technique to do so. There’s a reason technique is taught to kids; it protects them from injury. Pretty sure it still applies at the top level. I just wonder how much noise the Knights or the media would make about such an incident if it wasn’t someone with Waerea-Hargreaves’ reputation perpetrating these “wrongs” against them.

UGly In the last couple of weeks I have received two of my very own ‘thumbs downs’. I consider this a badge of honour! This means two thing to me; two people are reading my stuff and they care strongly enough to email in and express their opinions! Thankyou both! Interestingly both thumbs were about the same story I penned recently about the success of the Parramatta Eels. In the story I basically said how nice it was to have them winning again. I then said, in my opinion, no-one hates them and that if they continued on their winning ways, I’d be tempted to get on the bandwagon should the Roosters falter. The two thumbs could not have been further apart in their sadness toward me. The first one, if you didn’t read it and I find that difficult to comprehend, basically questioned my sanity in believing that no-one hates Parra. Yep, no probs, I’ve taken that on board; ONE person hates Parra, got it. Perhaps you could start a support group to discuss your issues… The second one was even more hurtful. The general premise was that they DIDN’T want me on the Parramatta bandwagon as Parra are actually going ok this season and I apparently have the ability to stop that success in its tracks! OUCH The only reason I’m not tracking this second person down to hit them with a defamation case is the fact that they have a great case! I am a master at stopping a run. And so to that end…. Water wastage annoying some locals At least once a week I turn the corner onto Keppel Street off William Street and notice this amazing amount of water gushing into the drain. DAVE RANKINE As I stopped to take an image of the torrent cascading out of the stand-pipe a local business lady reliably informed me that this was more than one a week occurrence. In fact, so often does it take place, it would appear Council has concreted the ground immediately surrounding the pipe outlet because the water was previously washing the soil away. So here is what I can’t work out. I know there have been complaints about dirty water – so I thought Council might have been flushing the pipe. But it has been happening for so long now that can’t be the issue. Calls to Council have gone unanswered but

you’d think that while community members are being asked to be water wise despite recent rains, Council wouldn’t be wasting tens of thousands of litres a week down the gutter from this one pipe outlet. If someone can provide an accurate reason why this particular pipe flows freely week-after-week, perhaps they might like to get in contact with me and we can get to the bottom of it. But BRC, please remember that while we seem so happy to waste this precious resource, our farming friends in the north of the state have now gone two years without a drop of rain and would cry at the site of such waste. Perhaps we can capture this water and send a truck to them as a helping hand? Just a thought…
