It’s worth reporting too that we’ve received several compliments about our paper over the last week or two which means the changes and improvements we’ve been making haven’t gone unnoticed. That’s very encouraging so please keep it coming. Since starting about 12 months ago the number of people who pick up Bathurst City Life each week has almost doubled but it’s still pretty obvious that a lot of people who, for one reason or another, don’t see a copy. You can help here, if you want to. Why not pick up an extra copy and give to someone who hasn’t seen BCL? You’d be doing your friends a favour and it’ll bring us closer to the day when everyone in Bathurst picks up a copy each week. Project plants seeds for environmental success Four years and 3000 seedlings in the making — Browning Street Reserve in Bathurst is finally beginning to take shape. DAVE RANKINE Once the dumping ground for garden waste like grass clippings and tree prunings, the reserve is now an abundant green space filled with life and energy. Last weekend, local volunteers joined council staff and Phil Josh from conservation Volunteers

Australia to plant another 200 seedlings and mulch the existing trees. “today we were involved in the upkeep and maintenance of the site and it was great to have local people from the community roll their sleeves up and join us during the morning,” Phil explained. “We were replacing a few seedlings that didn’t make it through the

recent spate of dry weather, as well as planting extra seedlings as part of the ground cover and under-story on the site. “We are also developing levels of foliage that will exist under the canopy along the creek line and that is what we planted last weekend,” he added. “the project has been four years in the making and has replaced the elms, willows and suckers that choked the site with native vegetation appropriate to the area.” Phil said the project was a joint initiative of Bathurst Regional council and the catchment Management Authority and was recently awarded a prize as part of the “heroes of the Macquarie catchment Program”. “We are fortunate to have had the trees donated to us by Greg and

Phil said the canopy trees were well established, with many growing close to 50 centimetres in height following the recent rain. thankfully, he noted the recent rains have been a godsend for this project and others like it across the shire. “Many of the plants lay dormant until the rain comes along and then, boom, they take off once the rains arrive. “I carry 800 litres of water with me to every job now, to ensure the seedlings get a good drink when we plant them, but nothing can replace the wonderful effects rain can have on native vegetation,” he concluded.

As pArt of Women of Aviation Worldwide Week, Bathurst Airport played host to a Women with Wings event which saw crowds attend to learn all about flying. the aim of the week is to encourage women and girls to take on a career in the field of aviation or to pursue flying as a hobby. the free event which took place on the 8th of March included information sessions, free discovery flights for women who hadn’t flown before and aircraft displays. Over 108 first-time light aircraft flyers took to the sky in either a glider or small aircraft and were able to experience taking to the sky and some given the opportunity to control the plane.

What makes you happy?

It Is a question we seldom ask ourselves and increasingly a concept, I believe, we are becoming less inclined to consider in our day-to-day journeys. We have tV and radio news bombarding us with bad news from around the globe and, if you are anything like me, have seven out of 10 Facebook friends whinging about their fat thighs, their bad hair day or how little they slept the previous night. so it got me thinking – what makes me happy every day? In fact, what is it about life that I have to give thanks for every morning when the sun shines through my bedroom window and I arise to greet the day. to assist me in documenting these aspects of my life, I have turned to social media and Instagram (the image sharing application on my Iphone, for the not so tech savvy). And to provide the motivation I have signed up to the 100 things that make me happy initiative – known as “100 happy days”. the initiative encourages people to take to their favourite social media application and share one thing a day for 100 days that makes them happy. Challenge accepted! I really do think we live in times when super-busy schedules have become something to boast about. While the speed of life increases, I am finding there is less and less time to enjoy the moment that you are in. the ability to appreciate the moment, the environment and yourself within it is the foundation towards long-term happiness of any human being. so I have committed to documenting 100 things in my life which make me happy – from my gorgeous fiancé and kids, to my collection of guitars and ukuleles, to my morning coffee or a bike ride with mates – my Instagram feed will be chock full of positive and enjoyable things which bring a smile to my face every day. I have committed to taking five minutes out of my busy schedule and give thanks to one thing in my life that makes me genuinely happy – for all different reasons. And I strongly urge the tech savvy readers amongst us to do the same. In a sad reflection on society, the 100 happy days crew state 71 per cent of those who sign up for the initiative do not go through the entire 100-day program – with work, family and life getting in the way and robbing them of their five minutes a day. Does that mean 71 per cent of us don’t have time in our lives to be happy? I completed my HSC last year, at Orange Christian School. I like reading quite a lot and I like playing music, I play the piano and I sing, I’m doing my 6 grade AMEB exams this year. What are some things you can offer the staff here, to get in our good books? Baking, my favourite things to bake are; sticky date puddings, lemon meringue pie, vanilla slice (better than the bakery stuff), and cookies. How would you answer the phone? Thank you for calling Orange City Life, this is Steph . What are some of your favourite things about Orange? I love rainy cold days, and there’s trees everywhere so in autumn the leaves are fun to jump in. I’ve lived here for 10 years so I know it pretty well. What do you want to do in the future? I want to go to university in Canberra, Sydney or Newcastle, but I got into Canberra so I will probably be going to Canberra. I will be studying a double degree in business admin and arts. What is your favourite book, movie and TV show? Book “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen, Movie “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, and TV Show “Gilmore Girls”. What are you looking forward to most about working at City Life? Meeting new people and experiencing what journalism is like, to see if I want to do it. I’m a bit weird because I’m a stationery and organisation freak so I’m looking forward to making plans and colour coding things. What is your pet hate? Spiders!!!!!!!Yuck

Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Fancy yourself as a bit of a wordsmith?

Well, entries are now open for the 2014 Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards. the competition is Australia’s largest and oldest poetry writing competition for students and in 2014 the awards are celebrating its 30 year anniversary. the awards are run by a volunteer committee in the nsW country town Gunnedah in the state’s north and have become a popular vehicle for young writers to express themselves to a wide audience. the connection to Gunnedah runs back to several family owned Mackellar properties in the area. As part of this program, Federal member for Calare, John Cobb was asked to submit my favourite poem, and he chose the Geebung Polo Club, by AB Paterson. in 2013, more than 700 schools entered the awards with 10,000 poems submitted from all over Australia. entries close on June 30 and more information is available at the awards’ website - www.dorothea.com.au.

Students requiring afterschool tutoring now have the option of using an online learning tool giving them direct access to their teacher from their own home. The state of the art program, ‘In Sight’ is the first of its kind in Australia and is likely to become the future of extracurricular education. ELISABETH CARTER Kip McGrath developed the technology with local tutor, Louise Lonergan taking the pilot program to Karatha in Western australia for its trial. the program was officially launched at the end of February and is now fully functional throughout the central West. Students are given a password and username and login at their chosen time to have face-toface time with their tutor via live webcam for an hour. Bathurst tutor, Louise says the program has already been a huge success. “it’s been great for country students and commuters and will be particularly good in the wintertime when it starts getting dark earlier.” Louise explains. “We’ve also found it works better, as a lot of students feel more comfortable in their own home and are less self-conscious and therefore able to work better.” the program is open for all school aged children from k-12 with a strong focus on remedial math and English tutoring. all tutors have working with children checks and are fully qualified, meaning that there is no disadvantage of using the online delivery option over coming into the centre.

Small business owners beware, there is a scam about town and a number of Bathurst business owners have been affected by a group of online scammers called ‘Yellow Page’, a rip-off of the legitimate Sensis ‘Yellow-Pages’. The scammers send out an initial fax which appears to be offering a free ‘Yellow Page australia’ Facebook page and listing in the online directory as an additional service. The fax contains a near identical logo to the real Yellow Pages logo and asks businesses for their details to sign them up to the service. What one local small business owner didn’t know when she signed up, was that she would soon receive a bill asking for over $1,000 dollars as payment for her listing in the company’s business directory. she also received a letter demanding she send payment by mail or else court action would be taken against her and bad credit ratings would follow. The letter contained a different logo this time, and came from hong-Kong. The original fax, on closer inspection, was a 2 year contract signing the business up to an online ‘business directory service’ costing $99 each month. The company involved, Open Business Directory Ltd has sent thousands of these faxes out to small businesses but are not in any way connected to the sensis Yellow Pages. So, what can you do to protect your business? make sure any communication is genuine. check the legitimacy of any faxes or invoices and if in doubt do nothing and ignore it. Giving out your details will only put you at risk. If you receive a telephone call, check the validity of the person you are talking to and don’t let them intimidate you with threats of legal action as they cannot do anything. If you are not quite sure about something check it out before you commit to any proposition.

It was all smiles as Joanne Soetens, Eleanor Soetens and Lynne Brennan took my $50 for their pingpong table and another $55 for a complete cricket kit at the Morisset Street garage sale on Saturday.

I dIdn’t need to read the rest of the information as I opened the Autumn Colours brochure and searched for what was on in Bathurst on Saturday. Every year, the residents of Morisset Street go through their sheds, cupboards and garages and pull out those knickknacks and brick-a-brac that garage sale scroungers like me just love to rummage through. And last Saturday morning, the sun beat down upon the devoted store-holders as dozens of mug punters like me pawed over their unwanted belongings in the hope of finding a bargain or two. the Morisset Street Garage Sale has become a popular annual event and this year about 20 houses got into the spirit. “Getting everyone together ensures people have more than one garage sale to look through when they come here and seriously, it gives us a chance to clear out a bit of junk from the garage,” one vendor smiled. Alongside a host of glassware, doilies, decorative teaspoons and baskets of all descriptions, there were a few bargains to be found and will admit to needing the assistance of my brother-in-laws trailer to take home the lounge chairs and ping-pong table that I simply could not walk past. And as the interested buyers meandered from one sale to the next – the morning was punctuated by two gorgeous young ladies and their extremely delicious lamingtons that I got for a song – but only when packaged with a basket full of decorative ball thingys. Really, if there is a better way to spend a Saturday morning – I don’t want to know about it.

Blooming great collection on show A flowering collection which dates back nearly 80 years is currently in bloom in Machattie Park and is amust for all green fingers. The begonias are currently in their prime at begonia house, and Robert Wootton, horticultural services supervisor at Machattie Park, suggested now was the perfect time to view the impressive collection. “The season starts in mid-February and runs till almost the end of april, depending on the season, but now is the perfect time to come and view them in full bloom,” Robert suggested. “The begonia house was built in 1936 to house the collection which now includes more than 70 varieties of tall, hybrids, foliage and hanging plants in a rainbow of colours.” Despite the narrow window of flowering, Robert said the management of the plants was a yearround concern with staff attending to every phase of the growing cycle of the flowers to ensure the quality of blooms on display at this time of year. “each plant is grown from a tuber, not too dissimilar to a potato, and on average we get about 10 years from each. We manage the collection by taking cuttings from each older tuber at the appropriate time and this allows us to continue to maintain the varieties we have on show here,” Robert added. During the course of the season, he noted many garden clubs from across the region and as far away as sydney, make the trip to bathurst to view the collection each year. “We are proud of the blooms we have on display and it is certainly a unique collection which is a draw-card for bathurst,” he concluded.

Bonus to help rehire local workers Retrenched workers from both Downer EDI and Simplot have been thrown a lifeline by the State Government last week, following announcements by Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner during a recent visit to the region.

In an initiative to support the workers at both companies, Premier O’Farrell has guaranteed that employees who have been made redundant from either company would attract a payroll rebate for any new employers who hire them under a support package. The government’s Fresh Start Support (FSS) scheme is an extension of the Jobs action Plan that provides an additional incentive to employers hiring employees made redundant in large numbers from a list of designated companies. and Deputy Premier andrew Stoner confirmed Bathurst’s Downer EDI and Simplot plants would be among those covered by the package. Under the initiative, the government would provide an additional $1000 rebate for employers that offered new jobs to the affected workers. “Downer EDI and Simplot have recently announced large-scale job losses of more than 50 positions due to restructures,” Mr Stoner said. “When employers offer retrenched workers from these companies a new job, they will be rewarded with a government incentive – through payroll tax rebates – to help grow their businesses and create long-term sustainable jobs. “This first selection of designated employers is based on nSW Trade and Investment’s regular interactions with companies across nSW. The department will continue to liaise with the state’s employers and, where necessary, discuss the new FSS scheme with them.” The $1000 FSS payroll tax rebate comes in addition to the government’s existing $5000 rebate under the Jobs action Plan. The Jobs action Plan provides a payroll tax rebate to businesses that employ new workers in new eligible employment – paid in two parts at 12 months and 24 months after the employee is hired.

Music to draw attention to refugee plight

Thanks for Scripture in Schools! I have the very great privilege and pleasure of teaching scripture in one of our Bathurst Public Schools. It is a privilege, because I, along with other ‘Special Religious Education teachers’ – mostly we call them ‘Scripture teachers’ – have our government’s permission to enter schools to teach the basics of our faith. And this does not just apply to the Christian faith. People from other recognised religious faiths are able to do likewise.

FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN SUCCESSION, LOCAL MUSICIANS HAVE RALLIED TOGETHER TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR AND BRING ATTENTION TO THE NEEDS OF REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS. DaVe raNKINe The Welcome Project music Festival serves to highlight the human rights of asylum seekers and the important right to refugee protection and will again be hosted by Rural Australians for Asylum Seekers (RAFAS) – a Bathurst Group. RAFAS is working to promote the right

to asylum and to fund raise for asylum seekers in Australia. Its coordinator, Julie Newham, told Bathurst city life she believed the right to asylum was under threat and the group wished to draw attention to the fact that people who arrive in Australia and seek asylum are legal. “Around one million asylum seekers have been accepted into the Australian community since 1945, however, recent arrivals have faced huge public debate about their legitimacy and legal status. The Welcome Project is a laneway music festival organized by RAFAS. Julie said last year’s event was such a success that RAFAS decided to create it again in the last of the warmer months. “The project seeks to celebrate Australia’s multiculturalism and diversity, as well as welcoming and showing community support for asylum seekers and refugees,” she added.

“The festival is on march 22 from 4pm at The Wholefood Kitchen, with a number of local musicians and bands performing. “The acts making an appearance include Gamarra (an Indigenous work which includes story-telling, poetry and music), retro country duo Smith & Jones, and the canbeltos choir, a singing group which allows people from all walks of life to come together to experience the joy of singing.” Julie said attendees can also expect delicious multicultural food and local produce, as well as speakers from Sydney and locally. entry is by gold coin donation. “The proceeds go to the Sydney house of Welcome, an organisation that provides housing, legal assistance, medical care and other support to asylum seekers residing in the Australian community,” she concluded.

It is also a privilege because I am able to teach those things which are meaningful above all else to human beings – our relationship with God our creator. In the end, nothing is more important than that. And it is a pleasure as I get to know the kids and teachers. Sure, there are behaviour issues from time to time (among the kids, not the teachers!). But nevertheless to see children engaging with the fundamental questions about life not only brings me great satisfaction, but helps them grow into informed adults. So thank you to our schools, our government, and scripture teachers who make all this possible. Not to mention God of course, who through Christ, shows us the way to live!

opening up 170 years of history With a history dating back to the early days of Bathurst’s settlement and spanning eight generations, Cheshire Homestead in Kelso has a rich heritage. DaVe raNKINe lAST WeeKeNd, homestead owner (or custodian as she prefers to be called), di Austin, opened the house and four acres of gardens as part of the ‘Autumn colours’ program. The open house was the first in “a while” for the homestead and attracted close to 40 people for the afternoon tour last Sunday. The opening formed the first of three planned at cheshire during Autumn, with two more planned for April 13 and may 11. The tours took about 90 minutes, with di taking five groups of eight people through the house at any one time. “cheshire dates back to 1818, with the original owner George cheshire being granted a parcel of land where the house currently stands at the Kelso crossroads,” di explained. “It took cheshire seven years to erect a modest two-bedroom cottage on the site and it was ultimately rented to his neighbour, Thomas Kite, for a decade before Kite purchased the property in 1840. “Kite then built a more substantial four bedroom dwelling as a marriage gift for his daughter in 1844, and that is the building you see here today.” di explained Kite’s daughter Sarah married Richard Young cousins, who went on to be come the first mayor of Bathurst in 1863 – giving the house some very close links to the early days of the

Bathurst colony and community. “during its 170-year history, the house has been in the hands of just five families and eight generations and has a special place in the local history,” she added. di said it was her aim to restore cheshire homestead to its former glory and used last weekend’s open day as a means of introducing the residence to local historians and other interested parties within the community. “I look at myself, not as the owner of the residence, but as its custodian. cheshire homestead belongs not only to me but to the entire community, so I am pleased to share it with them through this series of open homes during Autumn,” she explained. Further to just opening the house, di added that she had recently commenced the “Friends of cheshire” as a means of encouraging engagement with community members and the property. Sitting on four acres of land, cheshire is surrounded by Broombee Gardens, which were originally established by renowned horticulturalist and former owner, dr Garner, under the influence of premier gardener, edna Walling. “The garden really took shape in the 1960s and 70s but I consider it a sleeping garden at present, as I am trying to also restore it back to its former glory,” di said. “It is a work in progress, but something I am really quite committed to undertaking. The Letter Fred had always liked writing letters. In World War 2 he was stationed in the Cowra Army camp. He was in the recreation hut one afternoon writing letters. There was only one other man present in the hut, a young soldier called Bluey Murphy from Footscray in Melbourne. Bluey repeated “How do you spell gunta?” Fred then asked him what he was trying to say to which Bluey replied. “I never writ a letter in me life an I wanna tell the old lady, ya know me Mum, that I was gunta writ her a letter, but dunno know how to do it real well!!! After a short conversation Fred found out that the word ‘gunta’ was actually meant to be “going to.” Fred asked Bluey what he wanted to say. He talked about his new life in the army; that the meals were crook not like her cooking; and that he had to do his own ‘washin’ for the ‘first time in me life.’ And other matters like that. Fred wrote it all down. Bluey watched with great interest then copied Fred’s words in his own handwriting and thanked

him. Ever after that whenever Bluey wanted to write a letter he sought out Fred for help. What happened after they were separated as often happened in the army life Fred never did know, but at least Bluey knew that ‘going to’ was much better understood than ‘gunta”.

WHO AM I?

• I was born on March 4, 1955, in Melbourne, and studied law at Monash University. • In 1981, I travelled to Switzerland with wife, Merridie, to study theology. • I returned to Australia in 1984, and was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1987. • In 1993, I was elected mayor of St Kilda Council and became known for my clashes over gambling issues with Victorian premier Jeff Kennett. • The premier abolished my mayoral position in 1994. • From 1995 to 2003, I served as a minister, and also as executive director of Urban Seed, which deals with social problems. • In 2004, I was appointed chief executive of World Vision Australia. • My brother is a former federal treasurer.

A WORD OF ADVICE FROM READER TONY VICKERS

It pays to read the label! Although’ the country side is dry I still like to swan around the back roads and admire whatever it has to offer which is still substantial. I take my butane cooker and prop up under a well shaded tree and have a pleasant lunch. On this particular day I gave the fry pan a hefty spray and put the snags in and put the lid on. After a short while I noticed the fry pan was full of smoke? Strange I thought, so I gave it another smack of spray. Still it continued to smoke heavily. This had never happened before hence I was a tad confused? So I turned the heat down as low as it would go and gave it yet another hefty spray. Needless to say the smoke kept coming but nowhere near as bad now that the

temperature was reduced. In went the eggs and baked beans. Real cowboy tucker. And yes another spray for good luck. Something made me look at the can that I had used so extensively. No wonder things were not right I had sprayed the food with FURNITURE POLISH that I use for the dash board!! I cannot repeat what was said but needless to say I felt rather silly. The bread roll tasted nice tho’. No prizes for guessing where the meal went. Now all of the cooking equipment is kept very separate. When I told my daughter about it she laughed of course then proceeded to tell me of the time she had prepared a full roast dinner. Everything was in the baking dish. Leg of lamb, potatoes, pumpkin etc. The last thing to do before putting it in the oven was to give it a spray with cooking oil. She grabbed a can and proceeded to spray quickly realizing what she was using was GLEN 20!! I’m not sure what happened to the meal? Probably where mine finished up. So I’m not alone.

TIME FOR A LAUGH Joe and Jim were out cutting wood, and Jim cut his arm off. Joe wrapped the arm in a plastic bag and took Jim to a surgeon. The surgeon said “You’re in luck! I’m an expert at reattaching limbs! Come back in 5 hours.” So Joe left and when he returned in 5 hours the surgeon said “I got done quicker than I expected. Jim is down at the pub.” Joe went to he pub and there was Jim, throwing darts. A few weeks later, Joe and Jim were cutting wood again, and Jim cut his leg off. Joe put the leg in a plastic bag and took it and Jim back to the surgeon. The surgeon said “No problem, but legs are a little tougher. Come back in 8 hours.” Joe left and

when he came back in 6 hours the surgeon said “I finished early, Jim’s down at the soccer field.” Joe went down to the soccer field and there was Jim, kicking goals. A few weeks later, Jim had a terrible accident and cut his head off. Joe put the head in a plastic bag and took it and the rest of Jim to the surgeon. The surgeon looked at the situation and said “Gosh, heads are really tough. Come back on 12 hours.” So Joe left and when he returned in twelve hours the surgeon said regretfully “I’m sorry, Jim died.” Joe said “I understand - heads are tough.” The surgeon said, “Oh no! The surgery went fine! Jim suffocated in that plastic bag.”

A funny thing happened... The mere writing of this column is sure to get me kicked out of the front rower’s union — for acts unbecoming a forward — but I thought it might be a fun story to share. DAVE RANKINE Ladies and gentlemen of the Front Rower’s Union - i am in love! and last Friday night, while my partner and kids were at swim club, i stalked the rotunda in Machattie Park, planned a meal, grabbed a card table and chairs off a friend, set out some candles, sent a handful of cryptic text messages and sat and waited for my beloved to arrive for a hastily conceived, romantic Valentines day meal. as i was sitting there waiting (and sweating profusely with nerves), i got to thinking - this is what a used car must feel like when it meets a perfect new owner. You see i was once a one-owner car the type your grandma would only drive to the shops and to church on a sunday. But like everything old, i was put away in the garage for four or fives years, after Grandma decided to road test a newer model, following 12 years of ownership. But time passed and two years ago, it became time to break out of the garage and hit the tarmac…time for some marketing. The first ploy of any car maker is to undertake some serious product development to ensure the marketplace is ready for what they are about to sell. Granted i have a few extra miles on the clock these days, a little bit of junk in the trunk and the exterior was just starting to fade every so slightly, but the motor and interior had a significant refurbishment after competing an ironman triathlon in 2012. don’t get me wrong, i am not for a second thinking i am a classic old Ferrari, like Magnum used to drive. But i am also not a datsun 180b, old

but classic and reliable and something everyone owned at one time in their lives. nope, i reckon this one-owner, early 70s vintage work horse was more like an early Holden statesman – Top of the Tree in its prime and still highly desirable to the right collector. More product testing of my target audience was certainly necessary to develop a resilience to bad TV, bad food, late nights, loud music and inane conversation – the five deadly sins of the first date. Working behind the bar of a local late night establishment at the time certainly had conditioned me to the late night and loud music aspects of the five deadly sins (immediately sings “i’m sexy and i know it” in my head). sadly, i had a few product failures in the early days - especially when exposed to reality TV, quiet time on the couch, Matthew McConaughey rom-coms, long-winded discussions about feelings and talk of future directions. To address this and develop my tolerance and listening skills and better appreciate the needs of the target audience, a couple of married friends even made multiple recordings of girls talking about their feelings, intimacy and wedding plans for me to listen to while i was out bike riding - thankfully that didn’t put me off. Once product development and product recalls were addressed, the next issue to consider, according to my desire to find a new owner, was the issue of promotion. and while the lovely ladies at the Temora Quota Club seemed ready and willing to push my eligibility barrow, i was not sure their demographic would hit my target market. i mean a Kate Beckinsalesque figure was yet to swan into the aGM of the local bush fire brigade or Quota Club meeting. With few buyers in my local area, many of whom were not in the market for a classic australian automobile, i discovered that eCommerce could be a good way to market oneself to a wider audience. sites like eHarmony initially lost me pretty quickly. While women in the TV ads obviously love the idea of “matching on all levels of compatability,” the market research and hour-long survey you have to do to find prospective

buyers is simply not worth the effort. i figured that anyone who took the time to fill out the questionnaire wouldn’t fit the demographic. anyone spontaneous enough to invest in a 1970s Holden statesman, doesn’t fill out a 60-minute survey. actually, my first foray into eCommerce ended when a whimsical 40-something blonde from Coolamon, apparently looking for a sturdy car, with a touch of sophistication and a whole heap of class, turned out to be a 60-something dude from Wagga with a penchant for other dudes and a mullet that Billy Ray Cyrus would be proud of. so months passed, as did the ironman, and the old statesman decided to have another crack at eCommerce with the urgings of my flat mate. “Once bitten twice shy,” i thought. But there on the pages of the site, after a few days of receiving matches and amongst my daily updates, was a gorgeous looking woman from Bathurst with a profile to match - who thought i was extremely forward for asking her for a cup of coffee when i was passing through town when i sent her a message. awesome i thought - some test drives, the right ones, take a while to organise. Two months, 127 emails and 67 phone calls later and we met for Thai in Bathurst - and we have been together ever since. and last Friday night - yes on Valentine’s day - as we enjoyed take away Chinese at a hastily erected card table in the middle of the Machattie Park rotunda, surrounded by candles, she confirmed something we had been discussing for some time. in front of her and her two amazing kids, i got down on one knee and asked her to change the registration certificate and put her down as my new owner. amongst a few tears, she said yes! it really was a pretty cool way to spend a Friday night. Oh, and I received my notification of temporary suspension from the Front Rower’s Union - for acts “of undue and unnecessary romance by a loose-head prop” the following Monday. Good thing I have retired.

My take on it.. Good Now this is going to seem backwards but stay with me… The Waratahs lost their first game of the season in Canberra against the Brumbies. It was pretty tight at the end but the Brumbies never really looked in too much trouble, winning the game 28-23. It was brutal. It was intense. And had all the build-up and feel of an Origin match. The pre-game hype highlighting the apparent “dislike” many of the players have for each other, despite the fact many of them represent together at the highest level. Now it’s not ‘good’ that the ‘Tahs lost, I don’t like seeing that, but what I personally liked was the fact that Coach Michael Cheika got cranky enough to break stuff! Frustration equals passion at that level and passion has been seriously lacking in the Waratahs ranks in seasons past. Reportedly Cheika stormed out of the coach’s box and slammed the door hard enough to break the laminated glass. I like it. A lot more than I should. Won’t come as much of a surprise to

anyone that ever ‘played’ sport with me, I’m not, nor have I ever been, a good loser. I can accept a loss, doesn’t mean I have to be happy about it. It seems Cheika’s frustration was as a result of the amount of time it was taking scrums to be reset in the dying stages of the match. Crucial minutes were being soaked up after the ‘Tahs had managed to climb back into the match. Cheika wasn’t the only one getting annoyed; the whole Rugby supporting fraternity is behind him; the amount of actual playing time during a rugby match is diminishing with each game that is played and the officials and their bosses, like it or not, are to blame. Scrum after scrum. Reset after reset. Judged and officiated against by a guy in the middle allowed to “interpret” the meaning of about a hundred different scrum laws. And then some idiot in an IRB tie that hasn’t played the game in 25 years if ever at all, sips on his cognac and wonders out loud at the notable lack of spectators attending each week. At least Cheika’s frustration means he isn’t happy to accept mediocrity as the benchmark for his side.

BAd The NRl is back. And it has been great. But what is bad is how very pathetic I am at tipping teams. Any individual competition lucky enough to have me in their comp knows that my money is merely a donation to the eventual winner. How do some of you people get it so right week after weeks? I’m not the best of judges, but along with many other ‘not bad’ judges we just keep getting it wrong. Last week for example, what reasonable judge is picking Manly to beat the Rabbits? Souths were VERY good in round one and Manly got beat by a Melbourne team that had Ben Roberts in it! And then the Cowboys; they were also strong favourites over the Broncos despite the Broncos winning the previous week. Arrrrgh, it’s driving me mad. Parra fans were pretty pleased with themselves after round one, and then round two happened… And how the hell could any sensible judge have chosen the Tigers to beat

the Titans? Crazy. The Storm got the late money over the Panthers, and I cleverly took the Panthers. The dragons looked pretty good in beating the Warriors but geez the Warriors were ordinary. Of course I picked the Warriors. Just for the record I reckon Saints will be right there at the end… making cookie dough with their new wooden spoon. And so where do I go from here? It’s often been said, and scientifically proven, that you can’t win a tipping comp in the first few weeks; but I can tell you right now, you can lose one! Glad it’s back though.

UGLY How did he stay on the field? How, in the current climate, did Parramatta forward darcy Lussick keep playing on Saturday night? Yes I am a Roosters supporter, but this rant has nothing to do with that! Last season Jared Waerea-Hargreaves was sent-off for a hit on Manly’s George Rose. It was apparently intentional and he got hit with a five week ban as a result. At the time I said it was “ridiculous” to claim intent. Unless someone told you before the match they were going to do such a thing how can anyone declare intent?

If, all things being fair and equal, Waerea-Hargreaves’ tackle was a send-off offence (and to be clear, I’m not convinced it was) then surely that meant that Lussick’s tackle should’ve resulted in a send-off. Two things didn’t take place that I believe allowed Lussick to stay. One, Waerea-Hargreaves didn’t go down or appear to be badly affected by the hit; Two, Lussick IS NOT WaereaHargreaves! If that tackle had been made by Waerea-Hargreaves or indeed any of the other players in the game with a less-than-clean record (think SBW, Steve Matai, Frank Pritchard etc.), they would be gone! I honestly believe that Lussick’s lack of profile kept him on the field! despite the fact he has a long and ordinary record at the judiciary. The incident has now set a precedent and I wonder how much worse a tackle has to be before someone is sent from the field or will the NRL, as is their way, set out to punish the next poor bugger even harder? Punishing not only the individual but his team also. These types of tackle have no place in the modern game, that much is clear, but calling it intentional seems a bit over the top.

Many of the All stars took time from their busy schedules or gave up their lunchtimes for the cause as did the Kelso students. After a tough game, victory went to the All stars team much to their relief! The game managed to raise almost $900 for the Relay for life, a great effort from everyone involved.
