Beating the summer heat was easy for Bathurst kids Pearl (11) and Caiden Grimmett (9) last weekend as they hit Bathurst Pool to cool off. Armed with a new GoPro Black and two willing accomplices, we spent the best part of an hour with the camera on burst mode and them ducking and diving under water to take this cool shot. 180 photos and 60 minutes later, we got some awesome images and the three of us were cool as a cucumber by the time we were done.

In just over a month’s time, in conjunction with International Women’s Day on March 8, women in the aviation industry will be showcased in a series of events around the globe. DAVE RANKINE Bathurst will feature prominently during the “women of aviation” celebrations and local pilot tammy augostin has been chosen to be the local team leader of the celebrations. Ms augostin, who works with Panorama airways at Bathurst airport, said this is the first time australia will participate in the global event, which has been running for the past four years. “we will be hosting events across the states to encourage women and girls of all ages to consider a hobby or career in the aviation fields and we will be running an event here at Bathurst airport,” tammy told

When green thumbs turn brown Last week I resisted the urge which has beckoned me all summer. With the weather not getting any cooler, and my lawn turning a crispier shade of brown with every passing day, I ventured down to the hardware store to invest in a sprinkler. Yes, that’s right, I had decided to water the grass! Having come from the Riverina – where weeks can roll on above 40 degrees – a green lawn in summer was never a reality. But despite this anti-green prejudice – I capitulated to urgings of my sad looking grass and my insistent partner and put my hand in my pocket to pay for a sprinkler. I hate the idea of wasting water on lawn – you seriously have to pump so much onto it just to keep it alive, only for it all to evaporate the following day – it seems like complete folly. I mean, the dude I live next to is a compulsive waterer – you know the ones – they pump so much on the grass most of it ends up cascading across the footpath and disappearing down the gutter to keep the Macquarie flowing. And his lawn is still brown in patches. Brow beaten and defeated I drove down the road to the big green hardware store in Kelso (they are not getting a free plug out of me!) There, in aisle 4, between wheelbarrows and fertiliser, I was greeted by the “wall of water” – 25 metres of anything and everything to do with wasting hardearned cabbage on precious water in your garden. There were 30 lengths of hose in five differing diameters, with an array of accessories that were mind-boggling. And beyond them – there were sprinklers. Not just the basic “whirly-bird” $5 job of my youth – no readers, there were 168 different sprinklers (yes I actually counted them), of every style, shape, function and design. There were computer controlled models, ones which drove along the hose, some that controlled droplet size and some which looked like the very thought of water at pressure would blow their poorly made, Chinese design back to Windradyne. What I thought would be a 10 minute visit – became an hour-long saga. Would this one be water efficient, would it give good coverage, was it less that $120, and most importantly, would my partner approve? All of these questions needed to be considered and answered before I could return home and proudly stroll from the carport back to the kitchen door, plug it into the hose and seek the much-needed nod of approval from “the decision maker”. I picked them up, spun them, asked a random dude with six teeth for his thoughts on an oscillating model – and then tried not to recoil to violently when he provided his extremely honest appraisal. And finally I settled on “the wobbly T”. I have no idea if it is any good – but the label said water efficient, it was the right price and it spun around so the kids can play under it on really hot days. And now I am a lawn waterer – sad but true. Just the mention of that fact makes me want to run under the sprinkler and wash the stench of failure from appallingly bad green thumb. I’ll let you know how the lawn looks in a few weeks.

This coming Saturday, the Bathurst  Aboriginal community is holding a Sorry  Day event in the city to commemorate the  significance of the apology made by Kevin Rudd  on February 13, 2008. The event, supported by Bathurst Regional  Council, will start at 11.30am at the Bathurst  Memorial Entertainment Centre with a  screening of the apology to the Stolen  Generation. It will then be followed by a street march from  Bathurst Regional Council to Bicentennial Park  where Aboriginal storytelling , music, dance  and other cultural activities will be held at the  Gamarra Stage (The Awakening), from 12.30pm  – 4pm. The event is being organised by the Bathurst  Aboriginal Community Elders and Gibirgu  Mudgyigu Men’s Group. The Aboriginal Community Elders  spokesperson Kalmadyne Goombrydge,

Local company leading the way in supported workplaces DAVE RANKINE Where once people with a disability were confined to “sheltered workshops” or menial tasks in the work place, Bathurst’s Glenray Industries has opened pathways to employment, including apprenticeships, for disabled staff members. This month it was confirmed that Glenray Industries continues to beat federal benchmarks for supported employment – that is helping people with disabilities undertake meaningful paid work. And Glenray’s actions speak as loud as their words. Fully half of the 150-strong Glenray workforce have a physical or intellectual disability of some description and are tailored into work programs to suit their capabilities and skills. “This is all about future building,” explained Glenray general manager, cary Graves.

Wild about rhinos! Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum’s Public Programs Officer, Penny Packham ponders the dangers facing these unique creatures.

Trolley tag a blight on business district... It’s the public dilemma as old as the supermarket; what to do with the discarded shopping trolleys to stop them cluttering up the business district? Shopping centres in Europe take a different approach, trolley locks that make it impossible for the trolley to be removed from the store due to casters on the base or electronicallycontrolled locking mechanisms at shopping centre exits. Bathurst councillor Warren Aubin last year said trolleys have become a blight on Bathurst and small business owners have had enough. Durer and Dali help in saving rhino promo They’re one of Africa’s most fearsome creatures, but these two new residents in Bathurst won’t frighten anybody... DAVID DIXON However, tHe rhinoceros has much to fear from humans who have hunted these beautiful animals to the brink of extinction. Bathurst is now home to a couple of colourful rhinoceros sculptures which are currently on display at the National Motor racing Museum and the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum, as part of the taronga “wild rhinos” art trail. the “wild rhinos” trail features 125 decorated rhino sculptures in various locations from Sydney to Dubbo that aims to create an art trail for visitors to follow throughout the region from February to the end of April. “the display aims to promote their endangered status; to promote fundraising, and obviously to assist in their conservation,” Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum’s Public Programs officer, Penny Packham explained. “the event is also to highlight the program that taronga has created and is an art trail in itself,” Penny added. the two local rhino sculptures are “terra” (at the Museum) and “Durer’s rhinoceros: After Dali” named after the two great painters, Albrecht Dürer and Salvador Dali.

Nine schools from the Central west and the western region also helped paint calf sculptures which are also on display across shopping centres in western Sydney. However, the Mineral Museum has added their own personal touch, with an informative exhibition of the biology, range, and threats facing the rhino throughout the world. “It’s fantastic being involved with them, we have also put together this exhibition to highlight the issues facing the rhinoceros,” Penny enthuses. the unique exhibition has also has earned the imprimatur of Bathurst Mayor, Councillor Gary rush. “the stunning rhino sculptures will be located in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Bathurst, orange, Cowra, Parkes and Dubbo creating a trail of rhino sculptures to see the real thing at taronga western Plains Zoo in Dubbo,” Cr Gary rush said. visitors to the exhibition are also encouraged to download the free wild rhinos app and explore the rhino sculpture trail and discover some of the great places in the heart of NSw. People can explore the trail using digital mediums like Qr codes to capture their discoveries and learn more about rhinos at

Bathurst residents can expect to receive their new phone books this week, as publisher Sensis commenced deliveries on February 1. DAVE RANKINE According to Sensis, this year’s Bathurst White Pages and Yellow Pages will be distributed in a new ‘ideal size’ and page layout and will take around six weeks to reach each household. “the new book will be easier to handle, use and store,” White Pages Product Manager, Sarah Simpson told Bathurst city Life (BcL). “Following customer feedback, the Bathurst White Pages and Yellow Pages will keep the original font size and have four columns per page, making it easier for people to navigate and find information faster. ”over time, people’s needs have changed with most people now preferring to use a book that is easier to handle. We’ve listened to that feedback and come up with a new size and page layout that meets user’s changing needs, while ensuring the book contains the same comprehensive content that everyone can rely on,” Ms Simpson said. A feature of each issue is the cover theme and this year orange local, Prue Mccarthy, has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s book. Taking the local library to the people For more than 40 years, Bathurst Regional Library has been performing a valuable outreach service to the community, connecting with those who may otherwise be unable to enjoy the services offered by the facility. the BAthUrst Mobile Library Van, which was first established in the early 1970s, visits more than 200 community members, schools and aged care facilities across the shire during its three and six-week cycles. Acting mobile library van driver, Catherine Grimmett, explains the service calls on seven nursing homes, four retirement villages, and more than 25 private homes in Bathurst. “We also visit the rural schools and

community members in turondale, O’Connell, Meadow Flat, sofala, hill end, trunkey Creek and rockley, ensuring our outlying communities have access to library services,” she told Bathurst City Life. Far from just a courier service, Ms Grimmett said the Bathurst Mobile Library van is part of an important outreach service offered by the library. “It is a wonderful opportunity to bring more joy and imagination to people’s lives,

some of whom are housebound and have limited connection to the community beyond their front door,” she added. Ms Grimmett noted that as well as delivering the books for clients, she has the opportunity to build relationships and develop connections with the ‘regulars’. “I love what I do, it is so hard to call it work,” she beamed. “every day, I am out in the community, connecting with people – it is a dream job for me.” Ms Grimmett has recently graduated from Western tAFe with community service work qualifications, and is in the process of obtaining a degree in that field. she said she sees this role as the perfect mix of her skills. The Bathurst Regional Library was the perfect retreat from the summer heat for a select bunch of chess players last week. DAVE RANKINE As the mercury topped 37 degrees outside, the competition was just as intense around the chess boards as players pitted strategy and skill against each other. Played each Friday by members of the University of the third Age (U3A) in Bathurst, organiser John stockman said the games have been played by U3A members for “many years now”. “We typically get about 10-12 regulars to a Friday game, ranging from beginners to very good players,” John explained. “We love getting new players along and there is always someone here ready to teach them and they are always welcome to join us.” John added that the afternoon was not all about chess. “We head down to the hub for a coffee after we are finished and typically dissect the afternoon’s play. “Moreover, we also try and spend some of that time

attempting to solve the world’s problems. It’s a fun way to spend an afternoon,” he joked. John said the Bathurst U3A is part of the worldwide University of the third Age movement which arranges courses in which people over 50 (the 3rd age) can use their leisure time to learn and teach together. “We are volunteers, and Bathurst U3A was established in 1991, and now have about 380 members.” “ All tutors give their time and expertise voluntarily. they love their subjects and enjoy sharing their enthusiasm and knowledge with others. some use their trade, business or professional expertise; others are happy to share a life-long hobby or interest with like minded people – like our chess games.” John added that people can participate in as many courses as you wish for small annual fee and all classes are held during the day. “Our four, six-week terms coincide with school terms, leaving people free for the school holidays, but our chess group is so enthusiastic, we didn’t even bother taking a break for the Christmas holidays this year – we just played right through the break,” he concluded.

Bathurst a motorcycling “Mecca” While long revered in car racing circles as the spiritual home of motor racing in Australia, Bathurst is fast gaining a reputation as a premier motorcycle-friendly city. DAVE RANKINE ThaT was the positive message earlier this month as motorbikes of all shapes and sizes, makes and models, descended on Russell street for the sixth annual Bathurst street and Custom Bike show. From some of the earliest turn-of-the-century two-wheelers to the latest custom-made choppers, the show highlighted the wonderful diversity which exists within the motorcycling community. Event organiser, Greg hirst of sydney, said he was overwhelmed with the turnout of bikes on saturday. “we had more than 240 rides entered in one of the 30 categories, which is close to 100 more than 2013,” Greg said enthusiastically. “Thankfully, we were allotted an extra 25 metres of Russell street to host the event and we had bikes and exhibits crammed into every square inch of that space.” aside for the huge number of entries, Greg also pointed out that more than twice that many bikes were parked around the event as people trekked from around the state to come and enjoy what was a warm day in Bathurst on the first day of February. “what encouraged me the most were the number of families and kids who stopped by for a look, it really shows me that Bathurst has a genuine interest in all things to do with motor cycling. “It was just so positive,” he beamed. The show was officially opened by Bathurst Mayor, Gary Rush, who rode in perched atop a bright purple harley Davidson. Dressed in full riding leathers on a 35-degree

day was no obstacle for the mayor, as he recalled his motor cycling days with great fondness to the enormous crowd which had gathered for the event. sensing the crowd’s mood, Cr Rush raised the hopes of many when he mooted the idea of a second racing circuit for Bathurst in the future, before he disappeared into some much-needed shade amongst cheers, to remove the black jacket and take in some much needed fluids. Mr hirst added this was the fourth stand-alone bike show for Bathurst, with two events (2009 and 2010) tied to the 12-hour car races which was held last weekend. “we had models of all shapes, sizes, ages and makes – and the bikes were pretty good too,” he joked. “People love the idea of rising a bike. To many it speaks about the freedom of being on the road, enjoying a journey with a partner or friends and heading off into the horizon for a day or a week on two wheels. “and judging by the number of entries, visitors and community members who stopped by for a look, it is safe to say Bathurst is the home of motorcycling in the Central west of New south wales,” he concluded. Greg said in total 30 trophies were handed out and he thanked shannons Insurance, Baird Brothers Motorcycles, Brotherhood CMC, Capital Motorcycles, 2Bs radio, B Rock radio, Live to Ride Magazine and Bathurst Regional Council, Elies Cafe, Bikers Motorcycles, Taylors Motorcycle services and Mick Muldoon Motorcycles for their support of the growing event.

Work is powering ahead on High’s new gymnasium It may have had a few shaky moments when asbestos was found on the site, but work on Bathurst High School’s new $7.4 million gymnasium is powering ahead to its late 2014 deadline. Work on the new gymnasium was started in June last year with a special sodturning ceremony but parents were notified of asbestos on the site only in July. A letter to parents on the school’s website said the asbestos was found well below ground level and was probably left-over from the demolition of temporary buildings in the 1980s. The new gym is expected to take 18 months to complete and will include a fitness laboratory, two classrooms, a seminar room and other amenities. There will also be a 380-seat performing arts centre with banked seating and state-of-the-art lighting. The facility is also designed to meet energy efficiency requirements and support the development of the school curriculum.

Cardboard cut-outs’ message of alienation They may have rebuilt Christchurch’s famous earthquake-devastated Cathedral out of cardboard, but the new collaborative project at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery is a little more modest in amibition.... 14

Artists isAbel and Alfredo Aquilizan have created a giant cardboard exhibition called “in Habit: Project Another Country” to recreate their sense of displacement in coming to Australia from the Philippines. but it is the interactive elements of the exhibition that are most striking… locals are invited to take up scissors, tape, and glue to add to the giant accretion with their own creative touches. Hayley Neubeck and Daniel eadie recently dropped into the Gallery and decided to have a go at making a creative contribution to the display. “We decided we’d go to the library and came in to have a go,” Hayley explains. Her detailed creation is of a very specific topic: “it’s kind of sofala; a little shop, they had started to build it but they never finished,” Hayley says. Daniel’s work is a bit more classical: “i’m building a castle,” he says, enjoying the handson experience. “it’s calming, soothing, yeah, something different,” Danny says. the interactive exhibition is currently on at bathurst regional Art Gallery in Keppel st.

Bathurst CounCil this month is introducing licence plate recognition technology with a Mobile Parking Patrol relentlessly hunting down parking-spot hogs. Council rangers will now be using a vehicle equipped with a camera and computer to monitor parking restrictions within the Bathurst regional Council area. this radical step followed a recent Council review of its parking enforcement activities with businesses and local shoppers recommending improvements to inconsistent parking zones around the CBD. Council decided to update to the new licence Plate recognition technology which, with more consistent parking zones, would allow more efficient monitoring of all restricted parking zones. Council has responsibility for monitoring 2260 on-street car spaces in the CBD and almost 2000 off-street car parking spaces. a camera and computer are being fitted to a a sante Fe that is marked “Bathurst regional Council Mobile Parking Patrol” that is to be driven by a Council parking ranger. a second

parking ranger will operate the computer inside the vehicle. as the vehicle passes stationary vehicles parked in restricted parking zones, a photograph is taken of the license plates of the parked vehicles. the exact time, date and location of the parked vehicles are recorded on a computer. the Mobile Parking Patrol vehicle will patrol the area until the parking zone time has expired. the lPr system automatically compares the multiple images taken on patrols. the photographic evidence will determine if a car has parked over the allocated parking time. it is estimated around 1000 to 1200 vehicles per hour could be monitored by this technology, which is significantly higher than the number of vehicles able to be monitored on foot. as in the classic movie, Robocop, the licence Plate recognition technology is very unforgiving of drivers who overstay their spots by even a few minutes. so don’t even try to talk your way out of it, as actor Paul Weller said in the 1987 film: “Dead or alive, you’re coming with me!”

Illegal parkers will now be booked before they even know it with new licence plate recognition technology.

Running Man Eglinton Eels sign on day The Eglinton Eels Junior Rugby League Club, Bathurst’s newest junior football club, welcomes any new faces to come and join us in 2014 in a fun and friendly rugby league atmosphere.

The Colour City running Festival kicks off on the 22nd Feb and in what is a bit of a coup for the event noted marathon runner Martin Dent has entered. Martin was good enough to share his thoughts his thoughts here so that those of you that aspire to reach the top level may find some inspiration. Martin, what brings you to Orange and why have you entered the Orange Colour City Running Festival? My parents took me and my sisters and brother to Orange when we were young. I am looking forward to seeing the sites this time with my own young family. Hopefully it’s a bit greener than Canberra this time of year. Also the race will be a good build up

Record finally broken

The club was formed in 2010, when it fielded only a couple of teams in the U/6s and U/7s divisions and has gone from strength to strength since. Shane Earsman, who helped start the club, said there was a simple reason for its creation. “When we decided to start the club in 2010 we did it with the goal of creating a safe and family-orientated club. We wanted to give both boys and girls the opportunity to learn to play rugby league. 23-year-old Melissa Breen broke Melinda GainsfordTaylor’s 20-year-old national 100m record when she clocked 11.11 seconds in her heat at the ACT championships in Canberra on Sunday. She immediately “thanked” Athletics Australia for cutting her funding and “hardening her up”. Gainsford-Taylor tweeted her congratulations soon after news broke of that Breen had bettered her long-standing record by one hundredth of a second. Breen then capped off a banner day before hometown supporters at the AIS track by beating Olympic 100m hurdles champion Sally Pearson to win the final, clocking 11.15 to runner-up Pearson’s 11.27.

It was the first time Breen had beaten Pearson in 30 head to head clashes. “I’m so proud to do it on my home track in front of my friends and family.” Athletics Australia last year cut Breens’ funding after deeming she hadn’t shown enough improvement to suggest she’d make the final at either the next two world championships or the 2016 Olympic Games. “When that decision came to fruition I honestly didn’t train for a week, it messed with me massively,” said Breen. “For your own federation to give you so little faith, it made me question everything. But it did harden me up, and sometimes it’s fun to prove people wrong.”

Felicity & Christopher On Saturday the 4th of January a beautiful morning wedding ceremony was held at Milthorpe Uniting Church for the marriage of Christopher McCarthy to Felicity Carter. A luncheon reception was held afterwards at the CarcoarTown Hall where guests were entertained by the sound of the harp, speeches and a compilation of the couple’s favourite songs. The day went without a glitch before the couple headed off to enjoy a honeymoon in Mittagong. Chris and Felicity McCarthy have moved to Alice Springs to share their married life together.
