Hi friends Welcome to the very first Central West PhotoNews Bathurst Extra! My column on Page 3 fills you in on who we are, what we’re about and what has brought us to Bathurst, so for this column I’d just like to let you in on some of the things you can look forward to in our Bathurst Extra over the coming months.

First you’ll see lots of local Bathurst people appear in our paper each issue. We do all sorts of things that enable us to feature people in this way. We invite ladies young and old to appear as a PhotoNews Page 3 Girl or in our Women in Business segments. The blokes get a go too in our Men@ Work segment, then there are segments like 60 Seconds and Meet the Boss for others, and we don’t forget the kids either with What Kids Say, Kids Speak and Class of the Month. You’ll also enjoy Hitches and Hatches as people share their wedding and new arrivals photos with us and our popular In Focus pages will allow anyone to contribute photos and other stuff for our readers to enjoy. We’ll present great cars in our Mag Wheels segment and we’ll provide an opportunity for people to talk about their hobbies and interests in My Club. We’ll also introduce other people of interest through other segments like Cross Culture, Star Student, Star Performer, On the Frontline and more. Yet if that’s not enough, we’ll also include a measure of fun and competitions for those who like to laugh and win. On that note, check out our Find Panther competition where we give you the chance to win one of two Dinners for Two each month thanks to the good people at Bathurst Panthers. It’s early days of course and I don’t want to make any promises or predictions, but I will say this—if the people of Bathurst respond to PhotoNews in a similar way to those in Dubbo and Orange have, Bathurst is in for a real treat and who knows where that may eventually lead. For now though, settle back in a comfy chair with a cuppa and take a stroll through our first Bathurst Extra. addicted to Speedway! When you first step into Ash’s Speedway Museum, it’s hard not to be overwhelmed by the incredible sight before you. Rebecca Sullivan Bike jackets line the walls from floor to ceiling, beautiful bikes glisten around the room and the sound of racing commentary crackles from a television set. the museum sits on a quiet street just out of town, but beyond its unassuming exterior lie thousands of pieces of assorted speedway racing memorabilia. its owner, ash suttor, has long been a fan of speedway bike racing. “i’ve always loved the speedway. i’ve been collecting bits and pieces from a young age.” He established the museum in september last year to house his eclectic

collection. “i had it in my house but, it sort of outgrew the house,” he jokes. ash sources most of his collection from the internet, and admits he’s a bit addicted! “With the jackets, it’s like bloody lollies. You get one, then you get another. Once you get one you can’t stop!” speedway racing has a cult following around the country. the sport actually originated here, and the first organized speedway event was held in australia. ash says the sport is perfect for thrill seekers and adrenalin junkies. “You’ve got no brakes and no gears and you run on methanol so you’re just flat out. it’s just the way you use the throttle.

it’s mayhem. “there’s a minority with a passion. it’s one of those things. Once it gets into your blood it stays there.” ash says a surprising number of people own speedway memorabilia, but keep it hidden out of sight. “there’s so much stuff out there, but people have it stuffed in garages. it’s sad. Don’t put it in the cupboard, put it out on display.” He encourages anyone with any speedway gear to contact him about putting it on display in the museum. “it’s just a passion and i want to share it with everyone.” the museum’s grand opening will be held on june 1, with big names ivan Major and keith Ryan set to make appearances. ash’s speedway Museum is open weekends and public holidays from 10am4pm, at 2/10 Bradwardine Road, Bathurst. My nickname... Al, Alpal, Ally, Alice in Wonderland. The list is endless. The most challenging thing I’ve ever done is... travelled around Europe for 6 weeks. I have an absolutely pathetic sense of direction! But it is also the best thing I’ve ever done. My favourite 3 movies or books are... Inception, Anchorman, and About a Boy. Something I’m definitely doing in the next 12 months is... getting my hair cut. It has probably been about 4 years to be honest! My most treasured piece of clothing is... at the moment, my Ugg Boots from Lucknow. If I could travel to any place it would be... a Contiki tour of the Greek Islands. I can’t stop reading up on this tour and dreaming about going; it just looks like such an epic trip! What is the one food you would never give up? Bacon. I’m going to go as far as saying that it’s the most delicious thing ever invented. My favourite place away from home is… my Mum’s cafe in Forbes, Mezzanine. It is the best building with the best food, best coffee, and the best people. I miss it!

Seven yearS ago next month, a new monthly publication called Dubbo Photo news was launched in Dubbo. 4,000 copies were printed and placed around Dubbo for people who wanted it to pick it up. Within a few months the popularity of the paper had grown so much that 10,000 copies had to be printed and it began to be produced weekly. Today 12,000 copies of Dubbo Photo news are printed and snapped up each week by enthusiastic readers. Five years ago this September, orange Photonews was launched in orange. 6,000 copies were printed and distributed each week and like Dubbo, it didn’t take long for the orange community to embrace the new publication. Today 13,500 copies of what is now known as Central West Photonews are printed and snapped up each week by excited readers. Like so many small businesses, the global Financial Crisis back in 2008 had the potential to sink Photonews in orange. Due to the fact that we rely totally on advertising from businesses to fund what we do, and in an effort to keep the ship afloat at that time, we decided to extend our coverage in orange to include Bathurst. To accommodate this we changed the name from orange Photonews to Central West Photonews and for six months produced a paper that covered both cities. after the dust settled it became obvious that the gFC wasn’t going to have the impact that was first feared and within about six months we realised that our advertising revenue in orange wasn’t going to suffer as we had predicted it would. The combined orange/ Bathurst Photonews concept also presented us with other problems which weren’t going to go away. around the middle of 2009 we decided to pull out of Bathurst and just concentrate on orange and the surrounding areas, a decision which proved a good one as we have never looked back since. Launching a Bathurst Photonews exclusively for Bathurst has always been on our radar and still is, but like most good business ventures, timing plays an important role. What you have in your hand is the first step towards presenting Bathurst with its own weekly issue of a Bathurst Photonews. For now we are calling it the Central West Photonews Bathurst extra. Initially we will produce and deliver it to homes right across Bathurst once a month. apart from a few features all of the content will be about Bathurst and its people. Like Photonews in Dubbo and orange, this publication is not your traditional newspaper. It’s more a social and shopping publication and this format has led Photonews to become the success it is today. We say it’s like Forrest gump’s famous box of chocolates, “you never know what you’re going to get”. So, let the Bathurst Photonews adventure begin. We hope you really like our very first Bathurst extra and we look forward to seeing how things progress from here. Whatever else happens, if our experience in Dubbo and orange can be taken as a guide, Bathurst is going to see all local newspapers lift their game. a bit of competition does that doesn’t it?

Bathurst TAFE says bring it on! reBeccA SuLLivAN Bathurst’s higher education institutions are getting behind a big push to encourage people to donate blood. Both Bathurst TAFE and Charles Sturt University are running competitions to see who can donate the most blood. The CSU campuses at Orange, Dubbo, Wagga and Albury are being pitted against each other in a race give blood. Bathurst TAFE is competing against other TAFE institutions around the country, as part of the National TAFE Recharge Your Karma Blood Challenge. Students who want to show their TAFE pride and spirit are asked to donate and help win the title of the most generous TAFE institute. The blood bank drive comes in the wake of huge blood shortages across the country. One in three people will need blood during their lifetime, but only one in thirty Australians currently give blood. Both competitions end on May 31. The blood bus will be at CSU on the 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st of May. Some of BathurSt’S most talented artists have been given the opportunity to showcase their works in a new exhibition, celebrating australian native fauna. fox’s furniture and woodwork gallery’s Wonderful Wildlife exhibition features handcrafted wooden sculptures and beautiful paintings by local artists. all of the pieces are by artists from Bathurst and its surrounds. Catherine Love from fox’s

Gallery says the gallery wanted to focus on presenting work created by locals. “We wanted to really showcase things from local artists, because all of our things here come from all over australia, but this is specifically for people of this area.” ms Love says the exhibition provides these artists with a rare opportunity. “there isn’t another commercial gallery in town for artists to show their work, there’s only the regional gallery. We wanted them to have an outlet where they could do

that.”Several pieces have already been sold. the exhibition features a stunning kangaroo sculpture by robert fry, which has been handcrafted out of local red cedar wood. mr fry’s piece has been entered into the prestigious Waterhouse Natural art history Prize. the exhibition has been extended until June 11 due to popular demand and can be enjoyed at fox’s furniture & Woodwork Gallery, 108 William St Bathurst.

Only just turning 16, Geoffrey started racing at the age of 12 as part of the Bathurst Light Car Club, and received the Junior Championship in 2011. An impassioned artist’s balancing act Bathurst academic Diane Westerhuis lectures in justice studies at Charles Sturt University, teaching a mix of such issues as sociology, criminology, policing and welfare.

hen she’s not doing that, she’s engaged in what she calls an, “Ongoing interest in environmental law. “I stood for the Greens in the last state election, and I’m particularly concerned about the mining boom and its impact on farmland,” she says. When she’s not doing that, Diane is a painter and sculptor – a member of the regional arts group Rogue Sculptors—whose latest 3D work is called, “Off the Wall: Mining Ideas, Habitat and the Golden Egg.” It’s a nest made of golden wire in the fork of a slender golden tree trunk with broken golden eggs in it. “It’s my interpretation of the impact that mining ideas have on habitats,” she says. This dual passion of academia and art

has been Diane’s life since she, “dabbled in journalism when young,” and combined a part-time job at Sydney University with writing a music column for a local Sydney newspaper. She started painting in Townsville in 1992, and her first portrait was that of her husband, Jacob, which hangs today in the couple’s house in Bathurst. Diane explains that Westerhuis is a Friesian name from Friesland in northern Holland, famous for its Holstein cattle and powerful Friesian horses, the ancestors of which, according to Wikipedia were, “used in medieval times to carry knights to battle.” Jacob’s life has been, and still is, as complex and full as hers. “At the age of 63, Jacob has just completed his apprenticeship as a bus driver, driving the local

schools buses part-time, morning and afternoons,” she says, “so that he has more time to spend with his 92-year-old father.” Diane says her latest sculpture, which she’s completed for a watershed exhibition that the Rogue Sculptors are staging in the Orange Regional Art Gallery later this year, is based on the theme of the, “Goose that laid the golden egg.” “It says that we should have other ideas than mining to ensure that the golden egg of our environment in Australia remains intact.” After some 15 years of painting and sculpture, Diane says she’s still struggling to be a complete, full-time professional artist. It’s not her art that’s standing in the way, but the academic work that’s leaving her with precious little time to be

creative. “I haven’t yet been able to devote my entire time to art,” she says. “Then there’s family life, bills that have to be covered. “Most artists just don’t make enough money to live on.” Yet all that could change with the inspiration that her new studio – completed in early May – brings her. It’s a “kit” studio, a single room cedar cabin with a high pitched roof, which she’s had installed in her back garden. “I had to have it built because there’s just not enough room for art in the house,” Diane says. It’s a perfect artist’s retreat whether it frees her from everything, but art remains to be seen. The energy and passion of her life so far suggests she’ll continue, as she says, to put 40 hours a week into her uni work and 10 hours or so into art – balancing it with research, teaching, environmental studies, marking papers and keeping up with politics. “I just have to make time for it all,” she confesses. “I’m not living otherwise.”

“Parker… Back to the Mansion” I used to say my occupation was in Education, but now my main role in life is as a chauffeur. Do you remember that classic TV show from the 60s called The Thunderbirds? It was one my absolute faves when I was younger. It was on at 6am in the morning and I recall getting up early, (even when I didn’t have to), to get my dose of the puppets as they battled bad guys and saved the world with that awesome crazy walk of theirs and the catchcry ‘F.A.B.’ One of the best characters in the show was Parker the butler, he ‘belonged’ to Lady Penelope and spent his time as her loyal employee and driver. He used to drive a multi-wheeled, bullet proof bright pink Rolls Royce. It had machine guns under the grill and could travel on water as fast as on land. After a mission was accomplished, Lady Penelope would say “Home, Parker”, and without ever complaining he would always say “Yes, m’ lady”. Last week, (a ‘regular’ working week), after attending five different hockey games in 7 days—some as far away as Lithgow, Walla rugby in Molong and senior rugby in Sydney, Soccer in Orange and Blayney, three nights of ballet in town, (we live in Millthorpe remember), an athletics carnival, a trip for a 16th birthday party, a sleepover drop off and pick-up, trips to the other side of town for piano, and a dash back home to Millthorpe in the middle of one day for a missing piece of sporting gear... I was a little over the travel and chauffeur thing. Don’t get me wrong. I love watching sport and the other exploits of our own children and those of our friends, I live to cheer for them, and I am all for supporting those kids who get off the couch and lead an active life. It’s also great to catch up with all of the other parents who are in exactly the same boat—the time on the sideline or at ballet is considered as down-time between trips. I would never-ever say that I’m busier than the next man, (it’s something that really annoys me when people say “I’m so tired, you’ve no idea how busy I am”), and the rewards that all of the mums and dads get as they do their Parkerthe-butler impersonations every day are immeasurable. I spent more time behind the wheel last week than Craig Lowndes does in the Bathurst 1000, and it seems the number of clowns on the road at all times of the day and night is on the increase. I sometimes reckon the machine gun under the grill would be a tempting optional-extra in the 4x4, (I have some theories about traffic and crazy drivers, but I’ll keep them to myself in this family friendly and non-offensive column). As one of my children got in the car after ballet at 9:15pm last night, she said, “Phew, I’m hungry. Dad, let’s get home”. Apart from the rich English accent, it appears my daughter has turned into Lady Penelope! Without batting an eyelid, I turned to her and said “Yes, m’ lady”. I wonder how much it would cost to get my limousine spray painted in bright pink?

The Chinese farmer has invented the car which he says could save his country from the pollution caused by its rapidly growing car market. When the car reaches 64km/h the blades spring into action and begin generating pollution-free power.
