Joggers from Bathurst tested their mettle against the annual 7.5km Edgell Jog on Sunday, September 9. The sun was shining and competitors young, old and canine took part to support the Bathurst region and stretch their legs after a long winter. The fastest times for the day were clocked by Philo Saunders with 23.35 minutes and for the females, Victoria Mitchell with 27 minutes.

Hi friends Welcome to the 5th issue of the Bathurst Extra! This past month we have been busy putting together a great read for you, and all of us at Central West PhotoNews hope you enjoy reading it. The Edgell Jog was once again a great success this year with a massive turnout and a great sense of community. Well done to everyone who participated, particularly those pushing prams or wheelchairs. Coming up in Bathurst this month we have some great spring activities including the Bathurst Uniting Church Spring Fete on Saturday, September 22. Cowra will also play host to the amazing Archibald Prize Exhibition. In October things really start to heat up with the Super Cheap Auto 1000! Before that there is also the V8 Supercar Parade on Wednesday, October 3 commencing at 11.15am, followed by a driver signing for all you race fans out there! The RCG Locksmiths V8 Race Ball to be held on Friday, October 5 is a great way to get into the race spirit whilst supporting a great Charity, with funds raised going to the Duchenne Foundation and Riding for the Disabled Bathurst. If there is one thing you should do this month, it is to browse any toy shop, or even just a toy aisle; even if you’re an adult. I also suggest you interact with some of the objects you find, not too much though or you may have a manager after you. EvEr since Natalie reid opened her Curves in Bathurst twelve months ago she has made it her aim to help out as much as she can with the local Children’s Ward at the Bathurst Base Hospital. Having her own children and knowing of other people’s children who have experienced lengthy hospital stays Natalie says she understands the necessity of funding and resources in order to make the child’s experience as painless as possible. In August, ladies from curves got together at the Highland Heritage restaurant for a High Tea and charity auction to raise much needed funds for the Bathurst Children’s Ward. $512 dollars were raised, (with many thanks going to local businesses for their donations of goods for the auction), and will be put towards improving the Bathurst Base Hospital’s Children’s

Future Moves helps students take a step forward by LEILANI VAKAAHI For many young Australians living in regional areas, it is believed that university may be out of their reach for both educational and financial reasons. Future Moves, an initiative that is running out of Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, is aiming to change this preconception by visiting schools and inviting students onto the campus. Future Moves started in 2011 with two staff, and has expanded to a three staff and twenty volunteer strong project that is proving to be extremely successful in the Central West region. Future Moves project manager Alison Charters says that it may encourage students to enrol in university locally or elsewhere. “Future moves aims to benefit school students and the community by raising awareness of options for higher education post school,” she said. Journalism student Hannah Moore has been a Future Moves leader since 2011 and says that the experience of being a mentor for the program is priceless. Future Moves invites students into the university to show them around

the campus and takes them to various faculties where they take part in educational, but fun, demonstrations and activities. The leaders also go out into the schools to mentor students about university life. Local senior students are also given the opportunity to shadow a student that is completing the course they may

Newspapers – where to now?! BY BOB HOLLAND Being in the newspaper game at the moment is probably not a really great place to be. I think most of us would be aware that newspapers generally, and especially the more traditional newspapers, are really struggling at the moment because the game has changed so much in recent years as the internet juggernaut rolls on. The problem most newspapers face is simply money. Newspapers survive on the money they get from either advertising revenue, sales of their newspaper over the counter or a combination of both and until recent times these two areas of income usually generated more than enough to enable newspaper publishers to make handsome profits. The internet has changed all that and not just changed it, but virtually signaled the ultimate demise of most newspapers as we know them. In areas where newspapers generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising revenue, they are now generating tens of thousands. Job ads, car ads, real estate ads and classified advertising have all traditionally been huge money spinners for newspapers but now, ads that once cost good money to place in newspapers can be placed on the internet for a fraction of the cost and in most cases reach a much bigger audience. This change alone has seriously shaken the foundations that newspapers were built on and publishers are struggling for solutions to the problem. Where publishers once sold 50,000 papers everyday, they’re now selling 45,000. That 10% in reduced sales may not sound like a lot but when you realize that it’s 5000 papers a day at say a $1 each every day for a year, you’re talking about $2 million a year in lost revenue. Although unpalatable, publishers like Fairfax can be forgiven for shedding staff, cutting back services etc. in an effort to keep their ship afloat. What needs to be realized is we’re talking losses in revenue that could potentially sink many publishers no matter how big they are. Even the “news” component of traditional newspapers is losing its gloss as people turn to the internet and all manner of other sources for their news.

Interestingly, the PhotoNews concept and this includes our Bathurst Extra version as well, does not rely on job ads, car ads, real estate ads or classified ads to survive. Yes we have these types of ads in our paper but they only represent a very small fraction of our total revenue. Also, because PhotoNews is free we don’t rely on sales of our paper for income. For now at least, we’re doing fine and still growing and I have no reason to think that won’t continue while ever people appreciate the quality of our publications and they continue to enjoy what we produce. New trends require new thinking and at PhotoNews, we’re thinking all the time so stay tuned.

Mack The Transporter and Lightning McQueen, the stars of Disney Pixar’s movie Cars are joining the sporting stars of the V8s to celebrate 50 years of racing at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 this year.

The Cars activity area had a huge response from fans last year at the Bathurst 1000 and is set to do it again with more on offer this year to keep everyone entertained. Cars fans, adults and children alike, will be able to get a taste of the Cars action with a Junior Drivers Training Track, colouring in at Mater’s workshop, a jumping castle, 3D cinema and PS3 Cars race offs along with souvenirs and photo opportunities. Australian sporting hero to be given a speaking role in an animated film when he voiced Australian character ‘Frosty’ in Disney Pixar’s Cars 2. “I’m a big Cars fan and I love both of the movies,” says Winterbottom. “I’ve been watching Cars 2 every second day with my son Oliver, he was so excited when he saw Lightning McQueen in real life for the first time. I can’t wait to catch up with Lightning again at Bathurst”.

One family that are looking forward to the Bathurst 1000, both for the big race and to see Lightning McQueen are the Connors. Charli Connor says that she’s excited to see Mack and Lighting at the race, but her favourite character is the Porsche, Sally. Her brother Bryne even wore his favourite Cars t-shirt especially for the photo! The Bathurst 1000 runs from October 4-7 and you can see the Disney Pixar Cars action on the Saturday and Sunday from 10am-4pm.

The festival will also coincide with the National Cool Climate Wine Show that is held annually in Bathurst and co-organiser donald Alexander says this will be a key part of Bre&d Week. kim Currie has been looking at ways that Bathurst wine, food and culture can be used to help promote the region and increase tourism and says that if successful, Bre&d Week could become an annual happening for the Bathurst region. “We’re looking at really authentic things that exist in Bathurst so the ideas come from the community as well. If you have an event that targets

locals and appeals to people within their own community then you have something really strong,” says Ms Currie.

“It’s enjoyable and educational, and you’re working with a lot of different stake holders. you’re liaising with different clients and businesses. It really builds your skills,” says hilary. “The big thing is to market Bathurst. It’s known as the racing town with the Bathurst 1000 and we’re trying to give another element to Bathurst tourism”.

“They’ve always done a terrific job, particularly with promotion and publicity and getting the word out there. It gives them a chance to put their media skills to good use as well as management skills and working in a team environment under pressure,” says Mr haley. The event has three groups of CSU public relations students working on various aspects of the festival and the Cool Climate Wine Show. Now in her final year of the communications degree, hilary Matchett says this

They’ve unleashed their unforgettable touring theatre show on the Blue Mountains and Central West areas, and now the cast and crew of health havoc are taking the piece to Sydney Fringe Festival where they are hoping to receive a warm reception from children and parents alike.

Charles Sturt University students Nina Juhl, originally from Sydney, and Ryan Fitch of Bathurst came up with the idea of a children’s theatre piece for their major work in their final year of studying a bachelor of communications, theatre and media degree in 2011. They took the show on the road at the end of last year to schools around the Bathurst area, particularly those that aren’t often visited by larger theatre companies. health havoc is aimed at preschool

and primary students aged 3 to 12. The educational show takes part in the human body teaching kids how it works and the importance of keeping healthy, whilst including elements of slapstick comedy that give both adults and children a laugh. earlier this year a friend of the pair suggested they enter health havoc in Sydney Fringe, an independent festival for visual and performing arts. When asked what they see happening with the show in the future, Ryan says they will just cross that bridge when they come to it. The group have also decided to donate $600 worth of tickets for the Sydney shows to St vincent de Paul so that underprivileged families and children from the Sydney area can enjoy the health havoc too. EMERGING ARTIST One of the Central West’s finest emerging landscape artists, Jane Tonks, is at the threshold of a whole new development of her talent and creativity...

he’s also moving into a deeper path of creativity in which she wants, as she says, “to explore the relationship of the physical landscape to the human experience.

“The cancer gave me a subject matter that I could focus on, and my paintings and photography depicted the cancer gene itself, the sickness, the despair and the scarring.

“For me it’s a form of meditation, taking me to a sacred place – an immersion, completely relaxed, in the natural world.

“It was really therapeutic, and it helped me find a new level of creativity to work towards.”

“I’ve always had a strong connection with the land – I’m not a city person.” Jane says her sense of the relationship of nature and humanity lies in “the resilience of the land – its constant cyclical battle with droughts, fires and other challenges. “It’s the same as me, scarred a bit, battered as I am at the moment, but always ready for the triumph of regrowth.” The analogy is real, her own scars and battered soul are real too – going back to the start of the summer school holidays last year when she felt a lump in one of her breasts. The discovery numbed her. “I was overdue for a mammogram, and did the check myself,” she recalls. “What really shocked me was that my previous check-up, six months before, had shown nothing.” Jane was numb for the eight days of tests it took to confirm that she did indeed have breast cancer. It was only then that she told her family – husband Martin, son Joel and daughters Lily, Chloe and Estelle. “Having to tell then was the hardest thing to do – the little one, Lily, cried her eyes out,” she says. As for herself, all that Jane could feel was the numbness that had engulfed her. “I was emotional for my family – the children – but not for me. I simply shut down emotionally and looked at the situation as something I had to fight. “And from there I did what I had to do.” Jane had to go through three operations in five weeks, then six cycles of chemotherapy in which she lost all her hair and then, as the treatments made her more and more sick and fatigued, fell into deep depression. “It was the last two cycles in April this year that did it,” she says. “All that nausea and inactivity – feeling disgusting for a week, then a two-week break, then into the next chemo cycle. “It damaged my self-esteem. I was going downhill.” Yet for all this anguish, Jane didn’t break. What she did was turn to her art as a way of fighting the cancer and the debilitating treatments. “I found that I had a chance to explore art, really learn a lot more about it and about my own creativity, in those two-week breaks between the chemo treatments.

One project Jane completed during the chemo cycles is a sequence of stark, intimate black and white photographs of a woman suffering the explosive emotional turmoil of cancer sickness. In one shot in particular, Jane portrays her own stubbornness and determination to beat the cancer – her subject is wearing boxing gloves, poised for the fight. Now, months later, Jane is at work again in her studio at her home, the cancer gone, her hair growing again, her painting poised at the moment between very striking, but what she regards as traditional, landscapes and an urge to lunge out beyond the square. In one sense, she’s back where she was at the wonderful age of 11 when, after seeing the artistry she’d managed to create “fiddling with house-paints,” her parents gave her five tubes of oil-paints and some canvases.

“And it’s true, I haven’t grieved, and I sometimes wish it would hurry up and hit me so I can get it over with.

The only problem she has at the moment is that numbness, that emotional shutdown, which struck her when she first knew she had breast cancer.

“The trouble is, I never once contemplated that I would die – never.

“The doctors tell me I still haven’t done any grief work, which they say is essential in the recovery

“From there, there was no stopping me,” she recalls. “Every weekend I locked myself away and painted for hours on end. “I always had a soul love for the natural environment. I painted mainly landscapes and seascapes, and it wasn’t until last year at the age of 44 that I began doing figures – people.” It was a two-year arts course at Orange TAFE that expanded Jane’s talents, particularly life classes with its disciplines of physical human structure, light, shades and angles. Yet it also took her into photography, sculpture, print-making and other genres that convinced her to explore the whole spectrum of art and creativity. “I had talent,” she says. “But no real direction.” She’s now doing what she really wants to do, build a professional, multidiscipline art business. “I put in for an Australia Council grant for business development in late May, and I was successful. It really blew me away. “Since then I’ve been busy spending the grant money on the tools I need – a digital SLR camera, skylights for my studio, a small press for print-making, portfolios, marketing material.” She’s also blessed with a family that not only supports her work but is highly creative too, with her husband Martin an accomplished oil painter, her son Joel already an award-winning painter studying art at Wollongong University, Lily developing as a painter and Chloe

Gunface are headed for success By LeiLani Vakaahi EnErgEtic and talented Bathurst band gunface has been hard at work, writing and recording their first album and filming their first film clip in the hope of making it big in the highly competitive music industry, but singer campbell Walker says the challenge isn’t going to stop them. the foursome that consists of campbell Walker, Kynan Elliot, Daryl Jones and christopher Beverington-Maloney, describe their music as ‘old school punk sensibility fused with infectious hooks, quirky, intelligent lyrics, and irresistibly danceable rhythm’. the group has been filming a clip in the Bathurst area for their song ‘caring is for Doctors’ which is generally about gunface’s way of looking at life, says Daryl Jones, and is the first piece they wrote all together. the film clip begins at the back

of the Keppel Street buildings where the band actually started, and goes on an adventurous journey down to one of the first local venues that gunface played at, the Elephant and castle. And although the band has a promising future ahead with a tour of Australia’s east coast from Brisbane to Melbourne locked in for January, they say that it was not all smooth sailing in the beginning. Most venues prefer to have cover bands, making it difficult to find somewhere that will showcase artists that play original music. “Because we’re a new band, it’s hard to communicate to the masses who we are and what we stand for,” says Daryl. “But we have upcoming shows in Wollongong, Katoomba and Sydney”. Sydney based producer Mario Brce is working with gunface to bring the film clip together and says working with the band has been an amazing experience for him,

and that he loves the location of Bathurst that the boys have chosen. “they’re extremely energetic and passionate about what they do. they have this amazing creative flair and can-do attitude that really inspires everyone. Working with them on a creative level is just brilliant,” says Mario. “i love the landscape in Bathurst and it definitely gives a kind of infinity feel to the clip. it’s a great part of new South Wales that isn’t packed with buildings and cars. it’s beautiful”. Mario also says that he thinks gunface has something unique and underground and that the film clip will reflect this. gunface are hoping to release their EP on October 1 with the ‘caring is for Doctors’ film clip to compliment it. “it will be up on Youtube soon and there is talk of it getting on tV. So watch rAgE for it,” says Daryl.

TIME FOR A CHUCKLE A friend once complained to my sister about the difficulties contained in child rearing, especially the lack of peace and quite rest. “What you need is a playpen to separate the kids from yourself,” my sister suggested. So my sister’s friend bought a playpen. A few days later, my sister called to ask how things were going. “Superb! look up at the stars! By mark sutton A guest at the Paralympics opening ceremony was British physicist, stephen hawking, who said “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet.” he is right. human beings need to keep their eyes on what matters, and not be distracted by mundane or trivial matters. For hawking, ‘looking up at the stars’ has resulted in great achievements in theoretical physics, as well as in cosmology with more popular works such as his ingeniously titled book ‘A Brief history of Time’. Broad as hawking’s thinking is, his universe is mechanistic and reductionist; in the end it can all be reduced to nothing more than matter, and even antimatter! however, in comparison with a Christian understanding of the universe, this is looking down at one’s feet. The Christian understanding of the universe is not materialistic or reductionistic, but rather that everything depends on God. “in the beginning God created the heavens and earth”, is the very first verse in the Bible. As the New Testament tells us “he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” That is, without God there would be no existence. Nothing would ‘be’. What a mind-boggling thought! Yes look up at the stars, and see God!

to the photograph is the Market Building which was demolished in 1909. The dominating structure on this site today is the war memorial Carillon which was officially dedicated in November 1933. The building to the left is the Telegraph Office, one of three structures making up court house precinct, this one being the western wing. Today it houses Mitchell

Conservatorium of Music. The identical eastern wing was the Post Office and today it’s home to Bathurst historical society’s museum. The copper domed court house sits between the two buildings. This photograph was taken some time between 1877 and 1897 when verandahs were added to the upper level of both the Post and Telegraph offices. The large building behind

the Market Building and the Telegraph Office is Webb’s Emporium one of the most successful family businesses in Bathurst’s history. Edmund Webb started his business in April 1851 in rented premises. he later built the building seen in this photo. Webb’s operated as a family business for 110 years, finally closing its doors in the early 1960s.

students win gold at World skills ThREE TAFE Western students have been crowned Australian Champions of their trade after competing at the Ultimate skills Challenge in sydney at the beginning of september. David Cummings of Bathurst won gold in the Electrical installation industry Category whilst Tyler Cook also of Bathurst and Joshua Kleinig of Dubbo won gold in the Mechatronics Team Event at the World skills Australia National Competition. David Cummings and Tyler Cook both completed their Certificate iii in Electrotechnology at TAFE Western Dubbo College and are currently working for AJs Electrical in Bathurst. Joshua Kleinig is a third year Electrotechnology

Apprentice and works for Michael Whiley of Dubbo. Dave Arnold, Teacher of Electrical Trades for TAFE Western said “This is a fantastic effort by David, Tyler and Joshua and well deserved. The students put in a lot of extra time and effort in addition to their training hours to be able to complete at this level. “World skills helps students to build confidence to tackle a task and benchmark their skills nationally.” he said, “We will always need trade skills to repair cars, supply power and build houses. TAFE Western is committed to providing the training needed to develop those skills.” TAFE Western was well represented at World skills Australia National

Competition this year with seven students competing including Luke Walsh of Narromine, Dean spicer of Nyngan, Jim D’Elboux of Cobar and Matthew smith of Orange. Brad Polack, TAFE Western’s Director of Educational Delivery for Manufacturing, Engineering, Construction and Transport Faculty said “having seven students participate in World skills Australia National Competition is reflective of the high level of training and skills TAFE Western’s dedicated staff are able to pass on to our students.” The national winners will now begin training for the international competition to be held in Germany in 2013.

he big cheese in charge of this fine weekly publication, Bob, has given me a bit of licence to venture outside the area of education in my weekly ramblings… I promise it won’t always be a tongue-in-cheek whinge, but I had to start somewhere. I was in the passenger seat of our family car as a 16 year old was chauffeuring me around on his L’s. As he was driving down a one-way, single-laned road yesterday, much to our surprise, a lady came toward us from the other direction in her vehicle, blocking our path. Now, the road was clearly marked

with two ‘no entry’ signs, and there was even a sign saying ‘way out’ to guide you to the correct path. I told him to stop, and we waited for a few seconds. I made hand motions that we were on a one-way road, but the lady kept coming. So we pulled over to the left, and I got the 16 year old driver to lower his window. I leant across him and said “this is a one way road”, to which the lady replied, “is it?” Yeah, right. So I mentioned the three signs she’d just passed, and she said “I didn’t see them because I’m looking for someone”. This lady could be the president of the “I’m special” club.

Most of you know I’m left-handed AND red-headed, (well, mostly bald, a little grey, but formerly part of the ginger brigade), so I’ve always had a tendency to drop a little bit of petrol on a potential fire. As I was walking down the main street a few weeks ago, I watched a well-dressed, middleaged man finishing his cigarette. His right to smoke is totally respected by me, and I make no judgement, but after the last puff, he chucked the smouldering butt to the ground without even stubbing it out. So as I passed I said “Mate, you dropped something”, at which time he genuinely looked

around his person to see what had fallen, (completely unaware that I was having a go at him about his littering). Stunned, I said, “no mate, the butt”. This prompted him to walk away, leaving the smouldering ciggie butt on the ground, mouthing words at me that are only found in the Macquarie edition of the dictionary. I guess I was lucky that he didn’t try and thump me, but being the vice-president of the “I’m special” club, he didn’t need to get physical. I live in a big glass house, too, so I’m not about to tell anyone I’m perfect, but I’ve never had the kahunas to move to the front of the queue

at a fast food outlet and say to those waiting to be served “do you mind if I go next… I’m in a big hurry”. Sure, go ahead, you must be Special. I’m guessing the best part about being Special is that you aren’t even aware that you’re Special—it’s a gift that you can force on others at anytime you want. All people involved in teaching take an unwritten oath to provide an ‘holistic’ approach to the education of children, but somebody must have taught these people about being Special—or are there secret club meetings?

Bathurst Edgell Jog BY ELISABETH CARTER & MARYANNE TAouk Bathurst turned on a spectacular spring day for the 2012 Edgell Jog. Over 1500 keen entrants of all ages (and lots of their fury four-legged friends) hit the pavement for the 7.5kms route starting and finishing at the Court House.
