LET’STALKFINANCE
WITH DANIEL MCGREGOR
BECOME A
SUPER WOMAN! Men retire with roughly twice as much super as women! And if you think you’re too young to be reading this… keep reading.
W
omen who retired in 2016 had an average super balance of $157,000 while men had $271,000. As you can see, women retired with an average $120,000 less in their super than men. That’s massive! Critically though, this is nowhere near enough to live on for men or women and both usually have to rely heavily on the age pension for income in retirement. Unfortunately, this means their lifestyles are significantly reduced compared to when they were working. The inequality in super between men and women is unfair, but it can also diminish a woman’s financial independence in retirement. The implications are huge for single or separated women, however, there are also enormous implications for a couple. Not to mention that women tend
30
JUNE 14–20, 2018
to live longer than men and therefore actually need more money to finance their retirement years. The causes of the gap are reasonably clear as women tend to have broken employment due to having children (with some women spending a significant amount of time in the unpaid role of a stayat-home mum) and there continues to be a persistent gender pay gap. Running out of money in retirement is usually at the top of people’s financial fears. Even if you’re nearing retirement age, it’s not too late to optimise your super, however the sooner you can start focusing on your super the better the results will be. And as you can see, it’s all the more important that women take charge of their super. Perhaps the biggest mistake people make is treating their super as something
they only need to think about when they retire. By then it’s too late. How your superannuation is invested during your working years is one of the most important financial decisions you will ever make. But with so much jargon and so many rules and regulations, it’s easy to put super in the ‘too-hard basket’. I certainly understand that retirement might not be your top priority right now as with three young kids of my own and a wife whose been a stay-at-home mum for almost 9 years, I know life gets busy! However, when it comes to saving for retirement, combining smart strategies with time will pave the way to bridging the super gap which won’t close without action! So, don’t get angry about women being worse off, get even by learning more about super and the steps you can take
to bridge the gap as much possible. Get smart about this now and your future self will be patting your current self on the back as you relax enjoying a cocktail on a beautiful holiday each year in retirement. This month, I’m running a workshop demystifying super so that women in Orange can learn: • What super is (it’s much more valuable than you think!) • How it can save you a fortune in tax (better in your pocket than the Government’s) • How it can make you wealthy (just think what you could do with lots of money) • What you can do to make the most of yours (there are lots of ways you can supercharge your super) Super is a mystery to most people.
It doesn’t get taught at school, most workplaces don’t help their employees understand it and so most of us are walking around unsure of what to do. Let’s make your super matter and let’s make sure it works hard so that you reap the full benefits! Cheers,

Ladies, find your tribe &
love them hard
Moving to Orange from the UK recently has focused my attention on the search for a new tribe. No, I’m not looking for an undiscovered people residing in the Central West. Rather, I am in search of that group of like-minded ladies who you can laugh, cry and share stories with.
G
irlfriends come and go over the years, much in line with the rhythm of life. As we mature, change and for many, move home, our friendships naturally evolve. Inevitably you lose friends along the way (sad, but a reality of living in a global community) yet the connection with others grows deeper. Late last year, as I said farewell to my tribe, formed of wonderful, long and deep friendships, we could not have foreseen that in the short space of 6 months we would face the death of a parent, divorce and cancer together. Whilst geographically distant, we have relied on each other at this time of great challenge in our lives. This group of friends have been with me a long time. We have written together many chapters of our lives as we navigated adolescence and the defining decade
of our twenties, met our husbands and became mothers. I do not see them every day but know that when I do it will be the same as it was 20 years ago. I would do anything for them, despite the fact that our lives have taken different paths and are spread across the globe. It has taken these life challenges to make me realise how much more important girlfriends become with age. Every woman – young or old - needs a tribe. For behind every successful and happy woman is a tribe of successful and happy women who have her back. Take the new Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle; her supportive and beautiful girlfriends (not all tribes look this good!) took centre stage at her recent wedding to Prince Harry. This tribe was there to support her when her family were not. We did not express pity that her
family were not there, rather happiness that she was surrounded by loving friends and their families. My mother is an inspiring example of someone in later life needing a new group of women in her life after the passing of my father. Within her church community she has found a support network that is fostering in her a new sense of independence to confidently and happily take the next steps in life as a single lady. Tribes can come together quickly - they don’t need to be friends you have known for many years. A couple of years ago, I was lucky to become part of a disparate group of women who were brought together by a common interest in walking. Across the kilometres, we talked, we shared stories and we laughed, hard and long, and found in each other a group of like-minded,
strong women. I have not known these women long, but they made a profound impact on my life and I will always make time for them. Time? It takes effort, right, to keep in touch even with those we are closest to. Busy lives, families, kids - we don’t always prioritise our friendships as we should. Moving somewhere new and having to find the energy to invest in finding and building a tribe, or even just a good support network can be hard. But try we must as the rewards are great with new and interesting people never far away. Smaller communities, such as Orange, can make your search easier and your tribe need only be small - just one other like-minded person can make a significant impact. Children, animals, hobbies all help (book clubs, anyone?). I’ve recently got a dog and who knows who I will meet walking with my children and the dog. When do you know you’ve find your tribe? I don’t think there is one defining
moment. For me, it is when you have laughed together lots. There is nothing better for the soul than the warmth that comes from sharing funny stories with your girlfriends. Girlfriends love to laugh and I can’t help but smile when I see a group of ladies laughing together, as you know whatever else is happening in their lives, for that moment, they are present and happy. My best friend sent me a video this week of her dancing around the kitchen to a song we danced together to at high school. I love her for thinking of me, and I love technology and social media for making this so easy. It’s never been easier to love long-distance and there is no reason it should be any different closer to home. Ladies, love your tribe hard. Old or new girlfriends feed your soul and life is a much duller place without them.

You will meet Lionel in his final years as impoverished and an alcoholic but still sociable. “I certainly never thought I would be channeling him in his final years of bankruptcy and alcoholism. I don’t suppose Lionel thought he’d end up there either. In the early 1960s he was making sixteen pounds a minute,” said Phil. Lionel’s story is rags to riches and back to rags again. At the height of his success he threw extravagant parties at his Chelsea mansion, yet money slipped through his fingers. None of his shows was as big of a hit as Oliver! One was

a notorious fiasco: a show about Robin Hood and his Merry Men called Twang! (Barbara Windsor played Maid Marion.) Lionel kept the dying show running by pouring his own cash into it. Finally, he was in so much debt, he sold the rights to Oliver! and watched as others made fortunes from it. “How did such a remarkable talent go wrong? We decided Twang’s failure had thoroughly undermined Lionel’s self-confidence. As an untrained musical illiterate, once he doubted his inspiration he became creatively paralyzed. What a great character to play: a tortured optimist. Everybody liked Lionel Bart, including me¬¬––even though I never met him,” said Phil. An intriguing show that is worth heading along to. Be sure to book your tickets to secure your seat!

Orange Regional Gallery Exhibitions
Author, Amanda Hampson
Don’t miss all these great upcoming events held at the Orange Regional Art Gallery, there is something to suit everyone. On now is the Luminous Relic Exhibition until June 17. This major collaborative painting and moving image work was done by Mandy Martin and Alexander Boynes. The artwork is based on the fieldwork around industrial Geelong. This urgent, politically charged work examines the ongoing and cumulative effects of industrialisation and natural resources consumption on landscapes, fragile ecosystems
and human conditions. An interesting exhibition to go see. The Interiors Exhibition will also be on until June 24 and is curated by Gavin Wilson. It is often said we are shaped by the spaces that surround us, and the Interiors Exhibition explores that concept through the eyes of select modernist and contemporary artists. The exhibition includes forty-four paintings and is worth taking a look at. There are loads more upcoming exhibitions and you find the full list on their website at: https://org.nsw.gov.au/ JUNE 14–20, 2018

IT’S WHAT I DO, WHAT I’VE ALWAYS DONE. TOMMY JEFFS IS AN INCREDIBLE MAN WHO HAS DEDICATED HIS LIFE TO REALLY MAKING A DIFFERENCE AND HE HAS A STORY LONG ENOUGH FOR A BOOK.
W
e caught up with Tommy to highlight a few things that he has done in his life and to also give others some food for thought about how you could maybe be a bit more generous and giving. It is hard to know where to start with Tommy’s’ story, his childhood, volunteer work, cabaret shows, catering, Montrose House in Canowindra and the list goes on, so what better place to start than the very beginning of it all. Tommy grew up in a big Catholic family in Cowra, with 10 brothers and 3 sisters, and a remarkable mother who instilled them all with a good work ethic and values. “I am proud of everything I have done in my life and I have always done it in my mother’s name, mum was a battler, she just came on bad times and she still raised the lot of us. “She used to get up at 6am to work down at the Railway until 9am, then she would work until 3pm, then came home and cooked us dinner before going back to work. We saw her on Sunday, we always had a baked lunch. She raised us properly though you know, with all the great traditions,” said Tommy. Tommy left school on his 15th birthday to work for Reid Smiths, as it
was just what you did. “It was a job, in those days not many people went to university or anything like that, where as it is a big thing now. You just got a job, mum had that many kids at home. I earned $19 a week and I would give mum $10 out of that which was just a big help as it went to my younger siblings to put them through high school, every penny counted,” said Tommy. Tommy then headed to the big smoke when he turned 18 and ended up doing some modelling and window dressing. After returning to Cowra to care for his mother, Tommy sort of fell into the hospitality scene, and he hasn’t looked back since. “I got into hospitality because I used to drink at the Town House when I was about 21 and they said to me one day, can you come up and help, we need a bartender in the dining room. It was really formal, so that’s how it started. “I use to watch while they were cooking and one night the chef walked out, and they had 100 people coming in for dinner, so I just went in and started doing it, it was easy. Don’t forget growing up in a big house you learnt to cook and all that stuff. I then got asked to run all of the catering, I was there for 11 years straight,” said Tommy.
To Tommy, catering for hundreds is easy, as he tells us about the time he catered for 960 people for his 60th birthday, 960 people! Tommy also ran many very successful restaurants in Port Macquarie and Cowra before heading to Canowindra. Tommy bought the Deli Lama in Canowindra, owned that for 3 years before purchasing the old bank building, now known as Montrose House. Tommy hosts dinner parties and even hosts some pretty special guests. “We have had some really famous people here. They have stayed for the weekend, played golf, ballooned and they said it is just really good because no one recognises them. “I am proud of it and when people book they even pick the china, the linen and everything so when they come the tables are set to their expectations with their music playing. Nobody else does it,” said Tommy. Tommy says he has lived a very good life and part of that is because he has helped so many people through volunteering and fundraising, which is no mean feat. “I would say that I have raised nearly a million dollars for charity. I do a lot of little things as well, like a little boy was dying of cancer and all he wanted was a race car bed, so I
just went and bought him one. I do a lot of stuff like that, that nobody knows about. “I remember my first week back in Cowra at the Imperial and this lady walked up and introduced me to an 18 year old girl and she said, ‘you don’t know who she is do you, when you were living here my daughters bike got stolen and we wrote it up in the paper and you showed up the next day with a new bike’. “Then things like on Mother’s Day when all the women were working in Canowindra, I cooked them lunch and took it around to them. I just had to do it. “It is what I do, it is what I have done all my life and it’s what I am good at,” said Tommy. Tommy along with his catering does cabaret shows to help raise money for different causes, where he takes on the stage name Tallulah. “I don’t know where the idea came from to do Cabarets, we were just
mucking around one night, and I did a number, and everyone loved it, so that was it. “I do comedy drag so I come out as Cher when she was 60, then I come out 9 months pregnant. I think the pleasure I get is making people laugh, I have always just tried to make people happy. My mum always said if you make people happy then there is a reason for your existence,” Tommy smiled. There is certainly more to tell you about Tommy’s extraordinary life, but I really do think it deserves a book. For today, let’s just highlight and thank a man who has been giving from day dot. Tommy, you are an inspiration to us all. Thank you! Here is Tommy’s last piece of advice to leave you with, “Treat people the way you want to be treated, it is as easy as anything. Smile, they all think I am loony because I walk around smiling all the time, I don’t care, I am really happy and content”. JUNE 14–20, 2018
