A REAL HEAD TURNER FOR TURNERS
TURNERS (SOHAM), THE UK’S LARGEST DAF FLEET OPERATOR, HAS TAKEN DELIVERY OF A
‘UK30’
SPECIAL EDITION XG+
In a departure from the company’s iconic white, orange and red livery, the new truck is finished in an exclusive green metallic paint and features Turner’s original heritage livery.
The limited-edition truck has been allocated to one of the company’s longest serving and most valued drivers Steve Thorpe, who has been with the company since 1997. The special edition XG+, along with all Turners’ DAF fleet, was supplied by Cambridgeshire- and Suffolk-based family-owned DAF Dealer, Chassis Cab.
The anniversary edition model is number eight of a limited number being built to mark 30 years of DAF market leadership in the UK. The Turners truck is a replacement for the only other XG+ in the company’s 2,000+ DAF vehicle fleet; an acknowledgement to both the significance of the award and the company’s commitment to recognising driver loyalty and performance.
The UK30 special edition in green – Turners’ original colour – with period-correct graphics, creates a striking visual link to the company’s long history, while showcasing the flagship of the New Generation DAF
range. The Cambridgeshire-based operator introduced its well-known white, red and orange livery in 1977. Built at DAF’s Leyland Trucks facility in Lancashire, the UK30 XG+ features exclusive metallic green paint with Union Flag accents, reflecting DAF’s enduring legacy of UK manufacturing. Inside, the cab includes premium touches such as unique Xtra leather air seats, Union Flag graphic on the upper bunk, and spacious, refined comfort throughout, making it both a collector’s piece and a functional flagship for long-distance operations.
Group fleet engineer Tim King said, “This is a very special vehicle for a long serving driver. Despite operating more than 2,000 DAF vehicles across our various divisions, we very much recognise the crucial role of our fantastic drivers. Steve in particular has given nearly three decades of loyal service to this company. It’s a testament to the value we place on driver loyalty and the partnership we have enjoyed with DAF Trucks. The UK30 Special Edition in our original livery is the perfect way to recognise outstanding commitment.” ■

DRIVERS WARNED OVER FOGLIGHT USE IN WINTER UK TRUCKERS WARILY ACCEPT IN-CAB CAMERA TECHNOLOGY
INCORRECT FOG LIGHT USE COULD LEAD TO A FINE OF £50 FOR DRIVERS, ACCORDING TO FINANCE EXPERT
MoneySuperMarket has highlighted widespread confusion over the Highway Code rules regarding foglights.
A survey by the comparison site found that one in five drivers does not know the legal requirements for foglight use, putting them at risk of penalties without realising it. Rule 236 of the Highway Code states that foglights must not be used unless visibility is ‘seriously reduced’, as they can dazzle other road users and obscure brake lights.
use fog lights in normal rain. Incorrectly switching them on too early, forgetting to turn them off or using them in the wrong weather conditions could lead to a fixed penalty notice.
Sara Newell, insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, said: “Foglights are designed for extreme conditions, so it’s important to use them only when visibility drops below 100 metres – roughly the length of a football pitch.
“Switching your fog lights on in light rain or clear conditions might seem helpful, but it can dazzle other drivers and increase the risk of an accident.
DRIVERS SAY THEY WELCOME HAVING CAMERAS ABOARD IF THEY CAN HELP PROVE THEIR INNOCENCE AFTER A CRASH
A new report from Geotab shows that the majority (87%) of UK truck drivers are concerned about in-cab cameras being deployed in vehicles, but almost all would accept them if it helped prove they were not at fault after a collision.
The findings suggest that drivers are not rejecting the technology, but are instead asking for clarity, fairness and practical value from the systems designed to support them.
education on how these systems enhance driver safety and security, which will build a culture of trust and lead to safer roads for everyone.”
Interestingly, the survey found that 91% of drivers said that they would be more comfortable with instant audio coaching.
Despite this, MoneySuperMarket’s research shows that one in three drivers believes it is acceptable to
“It’s also easy to forget they’re on, especially if the weather improves mid-journey. Always double-check your lights before setting off and when conditions change.” ◼
Below: Many drivers are using foglights wrongly, risking a fine
Driver concerns are widespread and varied, with worries about footage being used out of context (34%), being used against them for disciplinary action (34%) and data security (32%).
This, says Geotab, illustrates the varied barriers to the adoption of video cameras, suggesting further education and information is required regarding their use.
“The narrative that drivers in the UK are against technology is outdated,” said Edward Kulperger, senior vice president for the EMEA at Geotab.
“When drivers understand the value of the coaching and that it’s designed to protect and develop them, rather than penalise them, acceptance rises dramatically.
“The industry has an opportunity to improve
THE INDUSTRY HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE EDUCATION ON HOW THESE SYSTEMS ENHANCE DRIVER SAFETY
This coaching would be based on an immediate, AI-powered analysis of in-cab video, instead of inward-facing video being stored for later review.
Across Europe, the UK has the highest overall percentage of drivers (35%) who believed that dashcam footage for coaching is a valuable tool for both professional development and safety.
The new data also shows that more than two-thirds (67%) are positive about using footage for coaching, provided it is constructive and collaborative, with less than 1% of respondents stating they see no benefit at all in having a dashcam. ◼
ROTARAIL ADDS A NEW LEVEL OF SAFETY FOR TRUCK FLEETS
A NEW DEVICE DESIGNED TO BOOST SAFETY COULD HELP PREVENT HUNDREDS OF INJURIES TO VULNERABLE ROAD USERS
RotaRail is the innovative idea that creates an extra barrier against the risk –particularly to pedestrians and cyclists – of becoming caught under the wheels of a passing truck.
Legislation already dictates that most trucks over 3.5 tonnes gvw must be fitted with Lateral protection devices, which partially cover the area between front and rear wheels, below bodywork. To allow enough clearance for vehicles crossing uneven ground or speed humps, though, these still leave an unprotected gap of up to 500mm between their lower edge and the road surface.
This is where RotaRail comes in. Built on a simple yet effective concept, it closes off the potentially hazardous gap between axles. Its patented hinge mechanism allows the system to swing backward or forward to avoid obstacles such as uneven ground or speed humps, before automatically
returning to its locked vertical position. The result is reliable protection with ample ground clearance exactly when it’s needed.
Managing director Ronan Twomey said: “The idea for RotaRail came about through conversations with a group of friends, all of whom are involved in the transport industry.
“We were all aware that the gap between a vehicle’s axles poses a serious risk to vulnerable road users –including pedestrians, cyclists, parents with prams and others. Unfortunately many of us have heard of, or even witnessed, incidents where individuals have become entangled in this exposed space.
BEHAVIOUR IS MAIN CAUSE OF CRASHES, REPORT FINDS
A NEW ROAD SAFETY REPORT HAS SHOWN THAT DRIVER BEHAVIOUR AND NOT ROAD CONDITIONS IS THE DOMINANT FACTOR
The report, from the AIpowered fleet technology specialist Motive, shows that drowsiness, distraction and aggressive driving consistently precede incidents, reinforcing the need for fleets to take action on distracted and unsafe behaviour.
The report analyses safety events captured in 1.2 billion hours of dashcam video
why collisions occurred from 2024 to 2025.
Other key findings include that mobile phone use is among the top five risky behaviours linked to collisions, with use peaking in late afternoons. Among truck fleets, drivers in agriculture show the highest rates of mobile phone use. The data also reveals that late-night driving is more dangerous than rush hour. ◼
“UK Government research into annual incident figures shows that, alarmingly, more than 2,000 people per year are seriously injured in accidents involving transport vehicles – and there are well over 300 fatalities.” ◼
MAJOR TRUCKSTOP TO SERVE CROSSCHANNEL PORTS
A MAJOR NEW LORRY PARK IS SET TO SERVE FREIGHT TRAFFIC PASSING THROUGH THE PORT OF DOVER
Situated on the A20 at the Court Wood Interchange and the last junction on the A20 approach to Dover, the project offers 24/7 secure parking for 600 HGVs and high-quality welfare facilities for their drivers. It is being promoted by GSE Group, which also operates the awardwinning Ashford International Truckstop, located at junction 10 on the M20 and the largest of its kind in Europe.
In 2024 the Port of Dover, the UK’s busiest roll-on/roll-off port, handled 2.1 million HGVs, equivalent to 5,930 per day. The proposed new truckstop could provide parking for around 10% of the port’s daily traffic within five miles of boarding the ferries and will support the Port of Dover’s 2050 masterplan which could facilitate a 20% increase in the value of trade handled at the port.
The proposed 70-acre site can be safely accessed by HGVs travelling coast-bound or London-bound. While
benefitting from its close proximity to the Port of Dover, it is also only eight miles from the Eurotunnel terminal.
Darrell Healey, chairman of GSE Truckstop Developments, said: “The site offers a once in a generation opportunity to provide best-in-class HGV welfare facilities right on the doorstep of England’s busiest port. It would make
THE SITE OFFERS A ONCE IN A GENERATION OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE BEST-INCLASS HGV WELFARE FACILITIES
a significant contribution towards keeping Dover clear of disruption. By helping to meet the critical shortfall for cross-Channel freight parking along the in Kent, it will tackle improve the daily experience of residents and visitors to Dover and Folkestone in particular.” ◼

GHOST PLATES CAUSE HUGE HEADACHE OVER SECURITY LLOYDS TRANSPORT BANKS ON NEW VOLVO TRUCKS
A MASSIVE NUMBER OF VEHICLES ARE DRIVING AROUND IN BRITAIN WITH ILLEGAL PLATES
According to a new report from the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Transport Safety (APPGTS), an outdated and poorly regulated number plate system is responsible for widespread illegality. It has created a rapidly growing crisis that enables criminals and organised crime groups to operate undetected on UK roads, lets dangerous drivers off the hook, poses serious safety concerns and leads to a significant loss of public funds, the report says. It follows a cross-party inquiry into vehicle registration plates, with new technology recently revealing that more than 4,000 non-compliant plates identified in a single location in Birmingham in just two weeks.
Ghost plates look normal to the naked eye but are rendered unreadable to ANPR cameras by a transparent film or raised digits made of non-compliant materials, or the careful altering of specific characters.
Cloned plates are also a growing worry with data from Transport for London (TfL) reporting that platecloning cases have surged in the capital by 64% in the past three years.
More than 18,000 ANPR cameras in the UK are now capturing around 90 million reads each day, but the APPGTS report says that this
is being critically undermined by weak regulation of number plate production, supply and a lack of enforcement.
The inquiry heard from National Trading Standards that ghost plates pose a serious threat to counterterrorism operations. The report exposes
MORE THAN 18,000 ANPR CAMERAS IN THE UK ARE NOW CAPTURING AROUND 90 MILLION READS EACH DAY
weaknesses in the number plate manufacturing ecosystem, with some 34,455 suppliers registered with the DVLA to produce UK number plates. Many operate from private homes or small workshops, with no background checks in place.
Some suppliers handling customers’ ID documents were found to have serious criminal convictions, including for violent offences and fraud.
Meanwhile, innocent motorists are increasingly being targeted by criminals who clone their number plates.
Many have found themselves accused of offences they did not commit, facing fines, debt collection and in some cases, police investigation. ◼
TAMWORTH-BASED HAULIER LLOYDS TRANSPORT HAS ACQUIRED NINE VOLVO FH AERO 6X2 TRACTOR UNITS
The trucks’ arrival marks a return to Volvo for the customer, with the new vehicles replacing those supplied by other manufacturers.
Martin Lloyd, managing director, Lloyds Transport, said: “Our drivers have been really impressed with the new Volvos. The cabs are comfortable, well-equipped, and easy to work in. Plus, with the mileage we do – close to 190,000 km a year per truck – we needed something that could go the distance. The I-Save engines have been excellent on fuel, and the trucks are proving reliable under pressure.
“Overall, Volvo offered a much more competitive package without compromising on performance or comfort, and that’s a big win when you’re running vehicles around the clock.”
The customer’s new Volvo FH Aeros each leverage turbocompounding technology, allowing drivers to maintain lower revs and a higher gear for a longer time to deliver a
more fuel- efficient journey.
The trucks are powered by D13TC Euro-6 Step E engine, producing 460 hp and 2,600 Nm of torque, providing a comfortable, powerful and efficient driving experience ideally suited to Lloyds Transport’s operational needs.
The tractor units’ innovative engines are paired with Volvo’s popular 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox technology and I-See predictive cruise control to yield significant sustainability and operational gains.
A Volvo Media package, including a high performance 12-inch fully dynamic instrument cluster and DAB radio, is paired with the FH Aero’s built-in navigation system, featuring improved maps adapted to truck-specific needs.
The trucks also feature additional cab storage, a 33-litre fridge / freezer, bottle holders, and a luxury sleeper control panel, all courtesy of a Living+ package. ◼

MERC PROVES ITS METTLE ON COAST-TO-COAST RUN
MERCEDES-BENZ TRUCKS HAS BECOME THE FIRST TO DRIVE AN ELECTRIC HGV FROM JOHN O’GROATS TO LAND’S END IN JUST OVER 24 HOURS.
AMercedes-Benz eActros 600 set off from John and arrived at Land’s End a day later, becoming the first electric truck to successfully achieve this momentous drive.
With only three recharging stops – at Sterling, Sandbach and Exeter – during the 1,378km (854 miles) journey, this achievement demonstrates not only the long-distance capability, efficiency and technology of the new eActros 600, but also
the growing potential for sustainable, fullyelectric heavy-duty transport.
With an average efficiency of 1.175 km/ kWh, the truck achieved a range of 510km on a single charge. The 39.5-tonne eActros 600 was powered exclusively by fully renewable electricity and saved 1.22kg of CO₂ per mile driven – amounting to a total reduction of 1,042 kg. This saving is equivalent to more than three years of an average UK household’s electricity-related
CO₂ footprint.
Mercedes-Benz Trucks is proud to use this milestone to support Globe Truckers UK, a charity committed to helping drivers affected by injury and promoting mental health within the trucking community. Donations can be made via the following link: https://lnkd.in/eyDB8Ess

YET ANOTHER HEADACHE FOR STRESSED TRUCKERS
THERE ARE ALREADY MANY PROBLEMS THAT DRIVERS FACE ON THE ROADS THAT COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH
Now yet another one has been highlighted – faded road markings.
New research by the RAC has found that a fifth of drivers (21%) claim most road markings in their local areas have faded away, while a further seven in 10 (71%) state some have deteriorated.
Nearly three-quarters (72%) of those questioned said the issue has got worse in the last five years – and 92% believe it’s made driving more dangerous.
Almost a fifth (16%) of drivers have had a near-miss and 13% have overshot a junction because they couldn’t see solid stop lines or ‘give way’ markings on the road.
Meanwhile, 19% say they’ve had a confrontation or been beeped by another road user as a result, while the same proportion (19%) have accidentally had to cut across lanes at
short notice.
Head of policy Simon Williams said: “While the Government has just published the country’s first Road Safety Strategy in more than a decade, this is one key area that shouldn’t be forgotten. We urge them to work with councils to rectify this situation, as markings are painted onto the road for good reason: to keep drivers and other road users safe by clearly informing them of what they should and shouldn’t be doing.
Above: Faded road markings are causing more problems for drivers
“It’s frightening to think almost one in five of drivers have had a near-miss as a result of faded road markings and more than one in 10 have overshot a junction. Leaving these most vital markings to just wear
away makes no sense whatsoever. While there’s clearly a cost to maintaining them, the cost of letting them disappear doesn’t bear thinking about.” ■

DRAWBAR TRUCKS
DAFS
ARE BANG ON FOR BIMSON
With eight of the new vehicles already deployed across the company’s 26 operating centres, early performance data reveals impressive fuel economy gains. Strong driver approval is also reported on demanding long-distance work.
The Carlisle-based operator, which manages almost 100 vehicles, has recorded notable efficiency improvements with the new XGs. Its drawbar fleet, which routinely operates with payloads up to 26.5-tonnes and 28.0-tonnes on its flat-bed artics, is now achieving impressive fuel returns approaching 8.0mpg – a 6% improvement over previous models, and obtained while running consistently at 44-tonnes GCW.
Bimson’s is a country-wide operation, combining extensive motorway running with frequent nights out before tackling tight urban environments and challenging construction sites. Drivers have highlighted the XG cab’s improved direct vision with enhanced kerbside visibility, which supports safe, confident manoeuvring on busy urban streets and confined construction sites.
Drivers have also praised the XG cab’s superior layout, increased storage, enhanced living space and practical features such as the passenger side swivelling ‘captain’s chair’, especially on regular nights out. ■
NEW FIGURES PUT TRUCK DRIVER SHORTAGE INTO PERSPECTIVE
DESPITE THE UK’S HIGH JOBLESS NUMBERS, TRANSPORT FIRMS HAVE DIFFICULTY FILLING DRIVER VACANCIES
According to new analysis by the Road Haulage Association (RHA), some 60,000 new HGV drivers must be trained in the UK each year for the next five years to meet growing demand and replace those leaving the industry.
Figures show that 100,000 drivers have allowed their Driver Qualification Card (DQC) to lapse in the past year, representing one in six of all working-age HGV drivers.
Many of those leaving the profession are in their 30s and 40s, raising concerns about
the long-term sustainability of the UK’s driver workforce.
RHA managing director Richard Smith said: “To future-proof businesses and the supply chain for the long term, driver recruitment, training and retention must be an urgent priority for Government. With an ageing workforce and significant numbers of experienced drivers leaving, attracting people into HGV driving has become increasingly urgent.”
Smith called for the reinstatement of the national HGV driver bootcamp programme,
Without investing in drivers’ skills, the industry will not sustain itself
which helped new drivers qualify quickly, and for reforms to the Growth and Skills Levy to fund permanent training schemes.
“A lack of roadside facilities and secure parking remains a chronic issue too. We are making headway, but there is a long way to go,” he said.
The driver shortage problem is not unique to the UK. Across Europe, more than 426,000 truck driver positions are currently unfilled, with the International Road Transport Union (IRU) expecting this figure to double by 2028.
Girteka Transport chief executive Mindaugas Paulauskas, warned that tightening visa rules, an ageing workforce and low appeal among younger people are fuelling a continent-wide crisis. Paulauskas said the main barriers to solving the problem are regulatory rather than motivational.
Stricter rules
He said: “Visa and work permit rules have become significantly stricter. Without meaningful policy action across the EU, the situation will most likely worsen.”
European logistics operators such as Girteka are investing heavily in driver
training and wellbeing.
The company plans to spend €300,000 (£265,000) on training centres in Poland and Lithuania by 2026 and is upgrading its fleet with 8,000 new Volvo trucks to improve safety and working conditions.
Both the RHA and Girteka are advocating for long-term investment in skills, better roadside infrastructure and modern working conditions to stabilise the driver workforce and safeguard supply chains across the UK and Europe.
While companies like Tesla and Waymo are focussed on replacing drivers entirely with artificially intelligence (AI) powered systems, Paulauskas is confident that human drivers still remain the key to the future of transport.
He added: “Without investing in drivers’ skills, working conditions, well-being, and development prospects, the industry will not sustain itself. The companies that recognise this today will be the ones still operating successfully a decade from now.”

DAF TRUCKS LEADS THE UK
MARKET LEADERSHIP RETAINED AS THE COUNTRY’S TRUCK INDUSTRY UNDERGOES SIGNIFICANT OPERATIONAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATION
DAF Trucks’ market-leading position remains unchanged, retaining its status as the nation’s top truck manufacturer in 2025. Securing a market share of 29.7% above six-tonnes GVW, the built-in-Britain brand’s unbroken run at the top of the UK market now enters its fourth decade, reflecting sustained confidence from operators across all sectors.
DAF Trucks’ UK market leadership rises from 28.4% in 2024, with 12,041 registrations holding up well compared to 12,780 the previous year, particularly when viewed against an overall 10% reduction in the market, falling from 44,988 in 2024 to 40,504 vehicles in 2025.
Figures supplied by the SMMT show the medium-duty two-axle rigid sector from
six to 16-tonnes GVW contracted as a proportion of the total market, falling from 20.2% of the total to 18.6% with a sector size of 7,533; a fall of 1,571 units from 9,104 in 2024.
Heavy-duty rigid registrations, which include two-axle rigids above 16-tonnes GVW and three- and four-axle rigids, fell by 2,088 units and shrank slightly as a proportion of total registrations to represent 36.3% of the market from 37.4%.
Tractor unit registrations, at 18,254 units, are down 825 from 19,079 in 2024, while the sector has grown as a proportion of the total market, now accounting for 45.1%, an increase from 42.4% in 2024.
Registration of electric trucks grew strongly, with 587 electric heavy trucks registered in 2025 (representing 1.5% of
the total market) compared to 217 (0.5% of the market) in 2024. DAF Trucks registered 84 electric vehicles last year. The strong growth in electric registrations has been supported by ZEHID funding and DAF’s own initiatives for early adopters, demonstrating clear progress. However, additional work remains necessary to reduce barriers to adoption and encouraging more operators to make the transition required to achieve legislative and environmental objectives. Very recently announced increases in the value of Plug in Truck Grants is welcome news, albeit at this stage only a short-term action to encourage uptake.

Central to DAF’s continued success is the UK’s most comprehensive dealer network, spanning more than 130 locations nationwide. The network continues to set benchmark standards in aftersales performance and uptime commitment,
achieving impressive results across a range of KPIs in 2025:
• The DAF UK dealer network carried out 47,961 MOT tests in 2025 with a first time pass rate of 98.9%.
• DAFaid responded to over 100,000 calls for assistance in 2025 with 90% of issues rectified at the roadside, helping to minimise vehicle downtime and avoid recovery costs. Calls to the DAFaid control centre are answered on average within eight seconds.
“Market leadership is earned by consistently delivering what operators need,” said David Kiss, DAF Trucks managing director. “In a time of fundamental industry change, our focus is on helping customers manage transition practically and commercially, protecting uptime today while preparing for tomorrow. Our dealer network, aftersales performance and approach to electrification are making a significant difference.” ◼
MILLIONS MORE AWARDED FOR ELECTRIC TRUCK GRANTS
AN EXTRA £18M OF FUNDING INTO THE PLUG-IN TRUCK GRANT HAS BEEN AWARDED BY THE GOVERNMENT
The extra cash will increase the Plug-in Truck Grant until March 2026, providing discounts of up to £120,000 on new electric trucks.
It’s part of a £318m plan for green freight which is backing British businesses by slashing upfront costs on new lorries and helping businesses to access the lower running costs.
Alongside increased funding, the government will also launch a consultation on the regulatory roadmap to phase out sales of new non-zero emission HGVs by 2040, giving industry the certainty it needs to invest and plan for the future.
Similar to the Government’s Electric Car Grant, which has already saved more than 45,000 drivers up to £3,750 when making the switch, the Plug-in Truck Grant enables lorry operators to access savings of up to £120,000 when buying a new electric truck.
The new funding comes after the Government confirmed last August that the Plug-in Van and Truck grants are being extended until at least April 2027.
The grants previously offered discounts up to £2,500 for small vans, £5,000 for large vans, £16,000 for small trucks, and £25,000 for large trucks.
The new grant levels for trucks mean:
• Smaller trucks (4.25t-12t) could save up to £20,000
• Mid-sized trucks (12t-18t) up to £60,000
• Larger trucks (18t-26t) up to £80,000
• And the largest lorries (26t+) up to £120,000
Keir Mather, minister for aviation, maritime and decarbonisation, said: “We’re backing British businesses to go green by making electric lorries more affordable, helping hauliers to make the switch while turbocharging growth, investment and jobs in the sector. Our proposals will provide the certainty the industry has been calling for so that Britain becomes the best place for green investment.”
Prior investment
The Government has already invested over £120m as part of the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme
to roll out more zero-emission lorries on UK roads. The new funding is set to further increase zero-emission truck sales to support delivery of UK’s climate obligations.
John Boumphrey, UK country manager at Amazon UK, said: “Amazon welcomes the Government’s continued commitment to supporting the electrification of commercial fleets. The UK will be home to the largest number of electric heavy goods trucks in Amazon’s global transportation network and the first of our recordbreaking order of eHGVs are already on the road.
“We’re investing to help the UK decarbonise and meet our goal of being net-zero carbon by 2040. We look forward to continuing to work with the government to ensure the growth of more sustainable logistics.”
THE VOICE OF INDUSTRY MUST BE HEARD AND GOVERNMENT SHOULD WORK WITH OUR SECTOR
Fundamental cash
Business group Logistics UK said the Plug-in Truck Grant was fundamental to the continued uptake of electric HGVs and added that the increased funding was “a welcome step forward that can help support the business case for industry to invest”.
But Lamech Solomon, head of decarbonisation policy, added: “However, with long procurement cycles, the sector needs certainty that these new rates will be
maintained far beyond March 2026, so it has confidence to plan and invest: our recently published report highlighted that over 60% of industry respondents believed the Government had not provided adequate funding to support the decarbonisation of their fleets.
“Commercial and operational viability will always be the main driver for logistics operators and alongside the cost of buying new vehicles, one of the main barriers they still face to fleet electrification is the lack of charging infrastructure: 85% of operators who responded to Logistics UK’s recent survey expressed low confidence in the availability of suitable public charging and more than 80% disagree they can install chargers with sufficient capacity at their operating sites. The logistics sector is committed to decarbonising but needs the Government to provide sufficient support to make this transition a realistic possibility for industry.
“These are the factors that need to be considered during the consultation, also announced today, regarding the regulatory roadmap to phase out sales of new, nonzero emission HGVs. The voice of industry must be heard and government should work with our sector to create a viable pathway to decarbonisation that includes all viable technology routes, ensuring the goods that businesses and consumers across the country rely on, continue to move smoothly through the UK supply chains.” ◼

TRUCKERS KICK BACK AT LACK OF WELFARE
NEW SURVEY FINDS AT OVER TWO THIRDS OF DRIVERS ARE DISSATISFIED WITH THE NUMBER AND QUALITY OF FACILITIES IN THE UK
In case transport firms are wondering why they are struggling to fill truck driving vacancies, a new survey from Transport Focus may help to solve the mystery. According to its analysis, almost twothirds of drivers are dissatisfied with the number and quality of facilities in the UK. This marks an increase in dissatisfaction compared with the previous year.
The UK logistics industry contributes around £170 billion to the national economy, employs more than 8% of the workforce and plays a crucial role in supporting the Government’s growth objectives.
With freight crime estimated to cost around £700 million annually, ensuring drivers have consistent access to secure, high-quality facilities is essential for protecting this vital sector and sustaining economic growth, says Transport Focus. Its ‘Lorry Drivers’ Facilities Survey’, which has quizzed more than 13,000 HGV drivers over the past two years, highlights the connection between drivers’ ability to rest and how safe they feel.
Louise Collins, director at Transport Focus, said: “Lorry drivers play a vital role delivering goods we all rely on right across the country. They need access to

in improving security at services, she explained that things can take time to make an impact.
She said: “It is important that the industry maintains focus and continues working together to introduce improvements which will help change driver perceptions.”
Junction 31 Secure Parking (M1 Sheffield) and Exelby Services, Coneygarth, were rated as the best truck stops, according to overall satisfactions scores, both scoring 100%.
Accelerated improvements
Rob Exelby, managing director at Exelby Services, said: “Matched funding from the Department for Transport has helped us accelerate improvements at Coneygarth, adding additional parking and upgraded security measures that drivers need.
“Collaboration between Government and industry makes a real difference, complementing the investments many operators are already making to raise standards.”
Moto Heston (E) was the lowest rated, with a satisfaction score of 61%, followed by Welcome Break Newport Pagnell
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) suggests that the industry will need an average of 60,000 new drivers a year for the next five years to meet demand.
Meanwhile, 24% of HGV businesses reported driver vacancies in late 2024, with many drivers leaving the industry or retiring.
Challenging times
The union Unite says lack of adequate
facilities results in drivers not being able to get good quality rest and makes it far more challenging for them to eat healthily, which creates problems for physical and mental health.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Lorry drivers are all too aware of the problem, what they need to see is action in improving and expanding facilities, the hand wring needs to end. Investment and finding workable solutions needs to happen now.”
National Highways has been spending millions of pounds to improve facilities for drivers. Freda Rashdi, head of customer journeys, said: “We are committed to making changes to improve the experience of lorry drivers and boost business.
“Drivers need a safe place to stop to rest on their journeys. That’s why, along with industry, we have invested more than £25 million – creating more HGV parking spaces, boosting security, and upgrading lorry park facilities.
“These are improvements designed to give drivers the safe, comfortable places they need to rest and recharge.”
Rachel Taylor MP, and chair of the AllParty Parliamentary Group for Freight and Logistics, highlighted the impact of freight crime. She said: “These survey results from Transport Focus lay bare what they frequently tell me: that there is an urgent need to tackle crime and insecurity at rest stops.” ■

S-WAY GAS TRUCK SHOWS THE WAY WITH 1,000KM RUN
FRENCH JOURNALISTS MAKE STUNNING ACHIEVEMENT WITH A SINGLE TANK OF COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS
Iveco has demonstrated the outstanding performance of its gas-powered heavyduty vehicles. Last summer, the Iveco S-Way CNG travelled over 1,000 kilometres on a single refill of compressed natural gas (CNG).
The vehicles driven by the French journalists Fabien Calvet and Loïc Fieux took place between the Belgian and Spanish borders, under real-world operating conditions. The tractor towed a loaded Krone curtain-sided semi-trailer with a gross combination weight of 30 tonnes, showcasing the S-Way CNG’s efficiency, endurance, and everyday practicality. The journalists highlighted the exceptional handling and driving comfort of the S-Way CNG. The vehicle’s High-Performance Engine Brake and Intarder hydraulic retarder delivered powerful endurance braking, while its full air suspension and new steering column enhanced driving precision and comfort.
The gas engine impressed with its smooth, responsive, and remarkably quiet performance. On-road handling was comparable to that of a diesel model – but

significantly quieter.
The result was an average consumption below 21 kg/100 km over more than 1,000 kilometres, combined with rapid refueling, confirming the technological maturity and everyday viability of Iveco’s CNG solutions. The tested model was powered by the xCursor 13 engine by FPT Industrial,
delivering 500hp and 2,200Nm of torque. This latest-generation gas engine is designed to meet the upcoming Euro VII standards and delivers optimal performance between 1,000rpm and 1,500rpm.
Paired with the second-generation ZF TraXon 12-speed automated gearbox and a long rear axle ratio, the xCursor 13 maximises torque efficiency while keeping engine speeds low throughout the journey.
The new 620-litre tank packs offer a total capacity of 1,240 litres (equivalent to at least 190 kg) of CNG – an 18% increase over the previous generation and a remarkable 72% improvement compared to the first IVECO CNG tractors introduced in 2011. Intelligent energy management systems – including a controlled alternator,
disengageable air compressor, and variableflow steering pump – ensure that energy is consumed only when needed. Aerodynamic refinements such as 3D deflectors, side fairings, and mirror-cams further reduce drag, helping lower fuel consumption across long-distance routes.
“This milestone perfectly embodies our commitment to sustainable transport that delivers both performance and profitability to our customers,” said Giandomenico Fioretti, head of alternative propulsion business development at Iveco. “With over 1,000 km on a single refill, the Iveco S-Way CNG sets a new benchmark for range, efficiency and comfort, proving once again that natural gas is a real alternative to diesel for long-haul transport, driving the decarbonisation of road freight.” ■
