VOLVO FLAGSHIP IS JUST THE JOB FOR HEAVY HAULAGE FIRM

GF JOB HAS WELCOMED A NEW RANGETOPPING VOLVO FH16 780 GLOBETROTTER XL 6X4 150-TONNE TRACTOR UNIT

The Highlands-based civil engineering and heavy haulage company is converting its entire articulated truck fleet to the Swedish manufacturer. It’s appreciation of the Volvo product began in 2012 with a FH16 750, that will now be put into semi-retirement after 13 years of loyal service.

GF Job will use its new flagship 150-tonne tractor unit for a range of heavy haulage duties – including transporting the company’s own plant machinery, forestry work, plus a variety of specialist loads including drilling rigs, wind turbines and oil refinery machinery.

The FH16 is equipped with a top-ofthe-range 17-litre Euro 6-compliant step E engine which provides 780 hp and a peak torque of 3,800 Nm. Volvo’s innovative patented wave piston design optimises combustion and reduces emissions, with a new injection system ensuring optimal fuel economy.

The engine brake power across the entire speed range has been greatly

improved too with outstanding responsiveness. This enables fast gearshifts, resulting in less wear and tear on the brake pads and discs, while also being more efficient when travelling downhill. Power is driven via a 12-speed I-Shift transmission, with heavy duty crawler gears to maximise startability and reduce clutch wear. GF Job has opted for full air suspension which improves stability on the road and enhances comfort for the driver.

Inside the Globetrotter XL cab, the spacious working environment is benefitted with a full Living package with two beds, under bunk fridge / freezer and microwave oven. The truck features a full leather Black Edition interior, including rotating passenger swivel seat.

Liveried in GF Job’s distinctive black and yellow colours, the exterior is enhanced with Michelin X Multi tyres, Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels, factory sideskirts and Kelsa lightbars. ■

HEADLIGHT GLARE REVEALED AS A MAJOR PROBLEM

NEW GOVERNMENT-FUNDED RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT HEADLIGHT GLARE IS AN IMPORTANT AND WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT

More than half of drivers say they have stopped or reduced driving at night due to headlamp glare.

The inaugural study by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) investigated headlamp glare and driver perceptions.

The research surveyed 1,850 UK drivers and indicated that the driving public regard glare from vehicle headlamps as an important and widespread issue when driving at night. More than half of drivers reported either having stopped or reduced driving at night – or would if they could – due to headlamp glare.

MORE THAN HALF OF DRIVERS SAY THEY HAVE STOPPED OR REDUCED DRIVING AT NIGHT

Tests involving a special cameras found evidence that modern lights are brighter. But the study also said that individual factors such as increasing age of drivers and diseases of the eye make people more sensitive, so it’s likely a combination of both. The research also found that other factors such as the geometry of the road play a role. Glare was more likely on hills or bends, where the ‘throw’ of the

headlamps was more likely to catch a driver directly in the eyes.

The data indicates that vehicle size and headlamp technology (LEDs) are potentially part of the problem. The research suggests that LED and whiter headlamps may be linked to glare. Drivers said they find whiter light harder to cope with, for example.

Larger vehicles such as SUVs may also make glare worse because of how the lights are positioned. But TRL said these findings need confirming in further work designed to test them directly.

A TRL spokesperson said: “Our findings suggest there’s a case for updating the rules, so they consider glare from the driver’s perspective, not just the headlamp’s technical output.”

TRL added that the research could form part of a bigger conversation, exploring renewed attention on headlamp standards in the coming years. And it’s called for public awareness campaigns on glare and further research to understand the problem in more detail.

The publication of the report follows latest RAC research that shows four in five drivers (82%) are concerned about getting dazzled by vehicle headlights with the arrival of darker evenings. ◼

TRUCK FLEETS IGNORE THE BENEFITS OF RETREAD TYRES

RETREAD TYRES CAN CUT COSTS, EMISSIONS AND WASTE, ACCORDING TO NEW RESEARCH COMMISSIONED BY CONTINENTAL – BUT MOST TRUCK FLEETS IGNORE THIS AND FIT NEW ONES

A survey of more than 700 UK-based fleets commissioned by Continental found that two thirds of respondents (66.9%) exclusively fit new tyres, even though more than half said mileage performance (56.7%) and purchase price (56.3%) were their top priorities when selecting tyres.

Concerns about quality and durability remain the main barriers, with 62.5% of respondents citing worries about retread quality and 46% questioning longevity. Only 2.1% said they use retreads exclusively.

Pete Robb, marketing director at Continental Tyres, said: “Retread tyres are a sweet spot for so many businesses. They can provide a lower upfront purchase price and like-for-like mileage capabilities matching that of an equivalent new tyre.

“However, a historic reluctance to embrace retreads is pushing operators to use cheaper, sometimes singleuse new tyres that will likely

not offer the same operational benefits.”

Continental’s ContiLifeCycle facility in Devon produces up to 4,000 retreads a week, reusing casings to reduce raw material use and waste.

RETREAD TYRES ARE A SWEET SPOT FOR SO MANY BUSINESSES

Michelin said its Remix retreads require only 20kg of new material compared with 70kg for a new tyre, saving up to six tonnes of CO₂ emissions per 100 retreads.

Goodyear has reported a 56% reduction in crude oil use compared with new tyre production, while Giti Tire estimates each retread saves 68 litres of oil and 44kg of rubber. Retreads can also deliver cost savings, typically around 30% less than premium new tyres, while being regroovable and in some cases suitable for multiple retreads over their lifetime. ◼

An electric Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 and an Actros L ProCabin running on HVO contributed to the sustainability of Paris Fashion Week by delivering catwalk sets for a British luxury fashion house, via logistics partner, KB Event, in partnership with Mertrux Truck & Van.

Sustainability is increasingly important for the fashion industry, with some designers presenting collections made with up to 98% sustainable materials.

With an average truck weight of 27 tonnes for the trip from the UK to Paris, the fullyelectric Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 truck powered by 100% renewable energy travelled 772 miles (1,242km). This saved around 844kg of CO2 emissions - as much as 37 mature trees absorb in one year - compared to a diesel truck doing the same trip. The consumption data for the electric eActros 600 showed it was achieving nearly 600km

from a single charge. The KB Event team seamlessly integrated any charging stops into its logistics, ensuring timely delivery without compromise. One of the drivers described the eActros 600 as: “An amazing bit of kit and the

power behind the vehicle was especially impressive.”

Leanne Clark, eConsultancy manager at Daimler Truck UK, said: “With zero tailpipe emissions and a proven range of nearly 600km on the trip to Paris, the eActros 600 shows that electric freight can match the demands of high-profile, high-tempo events, while helping fashion move in a greener direction. ◼

GREEN LORRIES STEAL THE SUSTAINABILITY SHOW AT PARIS FASHION WEEK

TRANSAID PLANS 2026 CYCLE CHALLENGE ARE YOUR TRUCKS READY FOR THE WINTER WEATHER?

CHECKING TYRES AND WIPERS IS ESSENTIAL, SAYS SOFTWARE SPECIALIST

Truckers are being urged to ensure tyres and wiper blades are in good condition when the weather gets colder.

Peter Golding, CEO at fleet software specialist FleetCheck, said that while many fleets had risk management processes in place that enforced regular walkaround checks, there remained others where enforcement was lacking.

Golding said: “The general condition of tyres in use on UK roads is poor. Recent research from the National Tyre Distributors Association shows around 40% of vehicles are running on rubber that is illegal or close to the limit. That’s appalling.

“Standards in fleet are doubtless higher but it is still possible to walk into company offices where quite large fleets are being operated and find there are no checks happening or systems are lax.

“This is something we see regularly from working with businesses who are interested in adopting our walkaround check app. It’s a legal requirement for all vehicles to be roadworthy and should be especially important to fleet operators.

“Failure to ensure this is the case could see company directors face severe consequences in the event of an accident but, more seriously, increase the chances of serious

injury and death.

“As winter intensifies with colder, darker conditions, all of these risks grow and now is a good time of year to promote the ‘think rubber’ message.”

There were other desirable elements to winter driving safety, Golding said, including ensuring that drivers were carrying items such as an ice scraper, warm clothes and water, but walkaround checks were very much centred on the fundamentals.

Golding added: “Regular checks carried out be drivers should ensure tyres are safe and well clear of the legal minimum tread, washer bottles are full, wiper blades are in good condition, lights are working properly and mirrors are clean.

IT’S A LEGAL REQUIREMENT FOR ALL VEHICLES TO BE ROADWORTHY

“It’s about being able to see, to be seen, and to stop in the shortest possible distance.

“As the nights draw in and weather conditions deteriorate, drivers inevitably become more aware of the need to approach journeys in a well-prepared and circumspect manner, and it’s an excellent moment for fleet managers to remind their employees – including grey fleet – about these safety basics." ◼

DAF CLAIMS TOP TITLE FOR THE THIRD TIME IN FIVE YEARS

DAF XD AND XF ELECTRIC ELECTED ‘INTERNATIONAL TRUCK OF THE YEAR 2026’

DAF’s New Generation XD and XF Electric trucks have been awarded ‘International Truck of the Year 2026’. Harald Seidel, president of DAF Trucks, received the most prestigious award in the truck industry during an award ceremony at the Solutrans exhibition in Lyon, France. It is the third win for DAF in five years, after the New Generation XF/XG/XG+ and XD

became ‘International Truck of the Year’ in 2022 and 2023.

In line with the rules of the International Truck of the Year (IToY) organisation, the title is awarded annually to the vehicle introduced in the previous 12 months that has made the greatest contribution to road transport efficiency. The assessment covers a range of criteria, including technological innovation, comfort,

safety, drivability, energy efficiency, environmental performance and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Praised for exceptional efficiency

The jury of 23 leading commercial vehicle journalists from across Europe praised DAF’s XD and XF Electric truck series for their exceptional energy efficiency, refined yet powerful driveline, and advanced

technical architecture. Furthermore, the award-winning vehicles were recognised for their long driving ranges, advantageous LFP battery technology, and superior driver comfort.

“During extensive test drives, jury members praised the XD and XF Electric for the perfection of their drivelines and the almost imperceptible gear changes. The modular vehicle concept, offering a wide choice of battery and axle configurations provide operators an exceptional flexibility”, commented Florian Engel, chairman of the International Truck of the Year jury. “With the new XD and XF Electric, DAF Trucks demonstrates that the combination of a central electric motor and a traditional rear axle can be at least as energy-efficient as a driveline with an e-axle. Moreover, this DAF configuration provides perfect weight distribution,

enabling virtually all use cases to be covered by a single technical platform.”

Zero emission range up to over 500 kilometres

The XD and XF Electric trucks are powered by PACCAR’s advanced EX-D1 and EX-D2 e-motors, delivering outputs from 170 kW (230 hp) to 350 kW (480 hp). With modular battery packs ranging from 210 to 525 kWh, the 4x2 and 6x2 tractor and rigid vehicles offer zero-emission ranges of over 500 kilometres on a single charge, and even over 1,000 kilometres per day through optimal charging planning.

DAF’s XD and XF Electric trucks are designed for both city and regional distribution and long distance applications, combining excellent aerodynamics with a low cab position, ultra-low window beltlines, and advanced digital camera systems for superior safety and visibility.

A moment of pride “Winning the International Truck of the Year 2026 with our XD and XF Electric models is a moment of pride for all DAF employees”, said DAF president Harald Seidel. “This recognition underlines our commitment to drive the future of zeroemission transport through innovation, quality and sustainability. We are thrilled that the jury of leading commercial vehicle journalists acknowledges the vehicles’ efficiency, safety and exceptional driver comfort. Receiving the most prestigious award in the truck industry is another recognition of the hard work of the entire DAF organisation to deliver first class products and services to our customers.”

NEW FIGURES PUT TRUCK DRIVER SHORTAGE INTO PERSPECTIVE

DESPITE THE UK’S HIGH JOBLESS NUMBERS, TRANSPORT FIRMS HAVE DIFFICULTY FILLING DRIVER VACANCIES

According to new analysis by the Road Haulage Association (RHA), some 60,000 new HGV drivers must be trained in the UK each year for the next five years to meet growing demand and replace those leaving the industry.

Figures show that 100,000 drivers have allowed their Driver Qualification Card (DQC) to lapse in the past year, representing one in six of all working-age HGV drivers.

Many of those leaving the profession are in their 30s and 40s, raising concerns about the long-term sustainability of the UK’s driver workforce.

RHA managing director Richard Smith said: “To future-proof businesses and the supply chain for the long term, driver recruitment, training and retention must be an urgent priority for Government. With an ageing workforce and significant numbers of experienced drivers leaving, attracting people into HGV driving has become increasingly urgent.”

Smith called for the reinstatement of the national HGV driver bootcamp programme, which helped new drivers qualify quickly, and for reforms to the Growth and Skills Levy to fund permanent training schemes.

“A lack of roadside facilities and secure parking remains a chronic issue too. We are making headway, but there is a long way to go,” he said.

DRIVER

The driver shortage problem is not unique to the UK. Across Europe, more than 426,000 truck driver positions are currently unfilled, with the International Road Transport Union (IRU) expecting this figure to double by 2028.

Girteka Transport chief executive Mindaugas Paulauskas, warned that tightening visa rules, an ageing workforce and low appeal among younger people are fuelling a continent-wide crisis. Paulauskas said the main barriers to solving the problem are regulatory rather than motivational.

He said: “Visa and work permit rules have become significantly stricter. Without meaningful policy action across the EU, the situation will most likely worsen.”

European logistics operators such as Girteka are investing heavily in driver training and wellbeing.

The company plans to spend €300,000 (£265,000) on training centres in Poland and Lithuania by 2026 and is upgrading its fleet with 8,000 new Volvo trucks to

Above: More than 426,000 truck driver positions are currently unfilled across Europe

improve safety and working conditions.

Both the RHA and Girteka are advocating for long-term investment in skills, better roadside infrastructure and modern working conditions to stabilise the driver workforce and safeguard supply chains across the UK and Europe.

While companies like Tesla and Waymo are focussed on replacing drivers entirely with artificially intelligence (AI) powered systems, Paulauskas is confident that human drivers still remain the key to the future of transport.

He added: “Without investing in drivers’ skills, working conditions, well-being, and development prospects, the industry will not sustain itself. The companies that recognise this today will be the ones still operating successfully a decade from now.”

EARLY SIGNS ARE INDICATING A FUEL ECONOMY IMPROVEMENT OF AROUND FOUR PERCENT

New DAFs have arrived at the Abbey Logistics fleet

DAF TRUCKS GIVE ABBEY LOGISTICS FOOD FOR THOUGHT

BULK LIQUID AND POWDER FOOD TRANSPORT FLEET ADDS 40 NEW TRUCKS

Abbey Logistics, part of the Sitra Group, has taken delivery of 40 DAF XF 450 FTP 6x2 tractor units, strengthening the UK’s largest bulk liquid and bulk powder food transport fleet. The latest investment forms part of the company’s rolling replacement programme, which typically sees between 50 and 60 new units introduced each year.

Abbey’s latest DAF acquisitions are being deployed to serve food producers across the UK and Europe. The trucks join an established UK operation comprising more than 400 tractor units, nearly 700 purpose-designed tankers and a further 1,100 vehicles operated across Europe by Sitra.

Early data from the new model year ‘25 XF 450 midlift 6x2 tractors indicates a notable uplift in efficiency, with average fuel returns rising from 10.09mpg on Abbey’s earlier vehicles of an equivalent specification to 10.49mpg on the latest ’25-plate vehicles, which feature a number of enhancements including to fuel efficiency through engine and driveline updates. The figures represent an almost 4.0% fuel economy improvement and an annual cost saving of around £1,300

per truck.

Dave Patten, chief executive officer at Abbey Logistics, said: “We’re delighted to be adding these latest generation vehicles onto our fleet.

Early signs are indicating a fuel economy improvement of around four percent compared with earlier trucks of comparable specification. It’s still early days but we’re excited to see even better fuel economy developing as more vehicles join the fleet. These improvements are vital to ensuring we deliver the highest levels of service to our customers while driving greater efficiency across our operations.”

Abbey Logistics drivers have been quick to highlight the DAF XF 450’s excellent driving characteristics and premium feel of the XF Sleeper High Cab, praising its refined comfort for a fleet vehicle.

The deep, curved windscreen, large side windows and passenger-side kerbview ‘vision’ door provide exceptional visibility while enhancing safety for all road users. Inside, the spacious, practical layout make long days out more relaxing, with thoughtful design touches that drivers describe as improving the XF cab beyond expectations. ■

TAKEAWAYS FROM THE CHINESE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SHOW

JAECOO, BYD, OMODA, XPENG, ORA. THESE ARE BUT A FEW OF THE NEW CHINESE BRANDS INTRODUCED TO THE UK CAR MARKET OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS BUT, IN THE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE MARKET, MAXUS – A BRAND INTRODUCED ALMOST 10 YEARS AGO – REMAINS THE ONLY MAINSTREAM COMPETITOR. IS THIS ALL ABOUT TO CHANGE? LIAM CAMPBELL TRAVELS TO THE CHINESE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SHOW (CCVS) IN WUHAN TO FIND OUT

China is exporting commercial vehicles in huge quantities. Of the 4.17 million vehicles exported this year (January – September 2025), 790,000 (15.9%) were commercial vehicles of which the vast majority were sent to developing markets in Africa, South America and other Asian markets where legislation and homologation is less stringent.

However, in the UK and Europe, the primary focus has been on passenger cars. This year, over 10% of new cars registered in the UK have been built in China, compared with around just 4% of LCVs and fewer still of trucks.

There are signs that this is about to change here too. Farizon launched its SV van at the CV Show this year and YuTong and JAC have announced plans to introduce their light trucks with collaborations with Pelican Engineering and Wrightbus respectively.

As with passenger cars, Chinese manufacturers are using their competitive advantage on EVs as their foot in the door for Europe and, at the CCVS, a range of potential new candidates were on show in full force.

DongFeng

Taking the largest stand at the CCVS was Dongfeng – a company whose global HQ is located just a couple of miles down the road

from CCVS.

Dongfeng recently announced the commencement of its new hydrogen truck trials in Wuhan, in conjunction with Honda, which combines Honda’s fuel cell stack and system architecture, developed through over three decades of hydrogen experience, and Dongfeng’s vehicle platform and manufacturing integration.

Other big news from Dongfeng is its successful partnership with Huawei to deploy megawatt chargers to fleet customers, with Dongfeng contributing to the world’s first 100MW charging station opened by Huawei in Sichuan Province.

DFAC

One of the keys to DongFeng’s success over recent years has been its joint ventures and UK LCV buyers will remember the DFSK (DongFeng SoKon Automotive) EC35 van. Another JV with Nissan, DFAC (DongFeng Automobile Company) has produced this V8E van, launched in May with a five cubic metre loadspace and a 54kWh battery, priced at just £8,600!

JAC

JAC will be familiar with UK consumers thanks to its Wrightbus partnership to launch the Rightech RT75 7.5t light truck. The Hefei-based company specialises in the light-end of the market (sub-12t) and was

CHINESE MAKERS ARE USING THEIR EV ADVANTAGE TO GET THEIR FEET IN THE DOOR IN THE UK

at CCVS to celebrate the launch of the new 4.5t ET9 light truck.

With its wedge-shape design, the ET9 has a drag coefficient of just 0.33 (33% lower than the segment average) to increase range by 15%, which stands at an impressive 510km from a 120kWh CATL battery.

Elsewhere on the JAC stand was a 3.5t autonomous van, developed with Shine Auto. With approval granted in numerous municipalities across the country, autonomous delivery vans is a fast-growing sector in China thanks to their lower running costs and higher payloads and load volume.

Interestingly, a JAC salesperson explained that fleet operators don’t feel the need to fit autonomous vans with as powerful motors and this particular model returned around 300km from just a 50kWh battery.

BYD

Despite its huge status in the car market, BYD is still a relatively small player on the CV scene with its eNV200-based T3 van being its most successful product globally so far. The recently-announced eVali van –earmarked for the UK – wasn’t on display at CCVS but there was a range of three trucks. The T4 and T5 were rated at 3.5t and 4.5t respectively, while the larger 50t Q3 was fitted with the BYD’s new-generation 452kWh battery pack, which is capable of charging at speeds of up to 350kW and means a 60% charge takes just 50 minutes.

Hybot

Hybot’s striking H49 hydrogen truck was bestowed the 2026 Chinese Truck of the Year award at CCVS and the relatively new startup was generating plenty of publicity. Earlier this year, Hybot secured £45m of

Series A funding and plans to launch the truck early next year.

In addition to offering L4 autonomous driving, the H49’s main advantage is its efficiency. It’s sleek, aerodynamic design affords a low consumption rate of just 7.1kg of hydrogen per 100km and a range of over 1000km.

Z-Trucks

Another new startup in the hydrogen truck market is Z-Trucks, a brand born out of a collaboration of Shanghai Wuliu Truck Company and Horizon Fuel Cells that manufacturers a range of all electric and hydrogen long-distance trucks.

Z-Truck’s latest offering is rated at 42 tonnes and combines Horizon’s proven VL-III Series fuel cell system with a locally sourced Type IV hydrogen storage system to offer an impressive range of 1,500km.

Foton

Foton has recently announced an overhaul of its truck range with its new ‘Daystar’ light trucks which feature new 800v battery architecture and full OTA servicing and its next-generation ‘Galaxus’ heavy truck range with up to 97.5% efficiency and L4 autonomy.

Also on the Foton stand was its new light commercial vehicles, the ‘Wonder Plus’ light truck and ‘Cavan Lefu’ panel van and minibus. Based on an all-new skateboard chassis, the Cavan Lefu features its own self-developed 2.2C battery and returns 4.2 miles per kWh.

FAW

As its name suggests, First Auto Work’s (FAW) is China’s oldest truck manufacturer dating back to 1953 and the company recently has a couple of other ‘firsts’ under its belt. Earlier this year it launched the ‘Track 1000’ which is China’s first independently developed 100kg-class onboard LH₂ system and FAW’s first 1,000km hydrogen system.

Consisting of a 300kW liquid hydrogen fuel cell paired with a 100kg LH₂ storage tank, Track 1000 achieves its range thanks to a number of innovative features, including an aerospace-grade cryogenic insulation system (with a static evaporation rate of less than 3%), stable pressure management during operation and hydrogen storage density of 10%. ◼

VOLVO’S GRAND SLAM

SLAM TRANSPORT HAS RAMPED UP ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH VOLVO TRUCKS

The firm is marking its tenth anniversary with the acquisition of 50 brandnew FH with I-Save 460 6x2 tractor units.

The latest arrivals mean that 35% of the customer’s 250-strong commercial vehicle fleet is now Volvo-supplied – a significant increase since it returned to the manufacturer in 2020.

gains are unlocked by roof and cab side air deflectors, as well as Volvo’s proven 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox. The popular transmission analyses factors such as speed, weight, road grade, and torque demand to perfectly time every shift.

Also included in the specification are Volvo’s Visibility+ and Drive+ packages. These include features such as the manufacturer’s distinctive V-Shaped LED headlights that automatically adjust to ambient light conditions, electrically heated and operated mirrors, an adjustable steering wheel with neck-tilt and dual armrests on the driver’s seat. ◼

One fifth of all the fines imposed on transport fleets relate to the Dartford Crossing on the M25, according to new figures from fleet management specialist Hudson Kapel.

Private parking fines were the largest category of fleet fines, accounting for 35.5% of the total between August and October 2025, down from 37% in the same period last year. Meanwhile, speeding offences accounted for 14.5% of all fleet fines, up from 13% in 2024.

Hudson Kapel said that fleet fines have ‘surged’ this year due to increased volumes of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Council-issued parking fines accounted for 8.5% of all fleet fines between August and October, down from 12%, while congestion charge penalties decreased from 5% to 4%.

Hudson Kapel said the

expansion of Clean Air and Low Emission Zones was increasing the pressure of fines on fleets.

Simon Withey, managing director at Hudson Kapel, said: “The volume of fines keeps rising. For companies running big fleets, it’s an operational grind. Every penalty needs to be identified, checked, and assigned to the right driver. The sheer volume makes compliance and efficiency a daily challenge.

“As more cities roll out new enforcement zones, the numbers will keep rising. The key for fleet operators is to get ahead of it – use tech, engage drivers and stop the admin from spiralling out of control.”

Hudson Kapel has rolled out a fine management platform, which links to 800 authorities, giving fleet managers real-time visibility of each fine, while notifying drivers, automating reassignment and providing trend reporting to help improve driver behaviour.

EV'S FACE CONGESTION CHARGE FEES

LONDON CONGESTION CHARGE FEES ARE SET TO APPLY TO EV DRIVERS FOR THE FIRST TIME.

The 100% discount for EVs will reduce to 25% for cars and 50% for vans and lorries from January 2026. The changes, proposed in spring and now confirmed, will take effect from 2 January 2026 to ensure the Congestion Charge ‘remains effective at managing traffic and congestion within central London’.

From this date, the charge will increase from £15 to £18. TfL said it was a lower than inflation increase and the first rise since 2020.

The Cleaner Vehicle Discount (CVD), which ends on 25 December, is also being axed. Currently, electric vehicles are entitled to a 100% discount under the CVD, subject to registration with TfL.

The first phase of changes cuts this to a 50% discount for electric vans, HGVs and quadricycles registered for Auto Pay, along with a 25% discount for electric cars registered for Auto Pay.

That lasts until 4 March 2030, when the discount falls to 25%

RODENTS POSE AN EXPENSIVE THREAT TO TRUCKS AND VANS

As if transport managers and drivers did not have enough to worry about already, it now appears that rodents are wreaking havoc by building nests in engine compartments and chewing through rubber tubes and cables.

According to Aviva, there has been a 28% increase in claims involving rodent damage, with a noticeable spike during the colder months of December and January.

for electric vans, HGVs and quadricycles and 12.5% for electric cars registered for Auto Pay in the second phase of changes.

The Sustainable Urban Freight Association said it was deeply disappointed by the decision.

The trade association for freight operators pointed to TfL’s own data that shows only 2.1% of all vehicles on the road in inner London are electric vans – and said introducing a charge for them would undermine the business case for electrifying freight and lead to more diesel vans on London’s roads.

The body said: “Travelling by car in London is a choice. Transport by van and HGV is often not. Other clean freight options can take on some of the mileage from vans and it is disappointing that TfL did not use this announcement to take any positive steps to incentivise uptake of other freight options such as cargo bikes, which can both reduce congestion and pollution across the city.” ◼

The cost of claims also increased, with the average claim in 2024 rising to £2,494 - an 11% increase compared to £2,253 in the previous year. In one case, rampaging rodents caused over £24,000 of damage, leading to the vehicle being written off.

Types of damage commonly cited by customers include rodent nests discovered within engine compartments and behind passenger airbags and numerous cases of chewed wiring and cabling, leading to damage across dashboard sensors, batteries, suspension systems and gear mechanisms.

Seats, seatbelts, footwells and

carpets have also been gnawed, while there has been fuel and water leaks caused by rodents biting into fuel tanks and piping systems. James Driscoll, motor claims manager at Aviva, said: “Many people are aware of the damage that rodents can cause to properties, but may not realise they also like to explore our vehicles. In the winter months, mice and rats look for warmer places to nest and they can squeeze into the tiniest of gaps, including the grilles, vents or open windows of vehicles.

“Once inside, rodents can cause significant damage, from chewing wires and gnawing at interiors, to nesting in engines. The issue tends to be more prevalent in larger cities, where higher population density, extensive drainage networks and ageing infrastructure create ideal conditions for vermin to thrive.”

Driscoll says it is worth being extra-vigilant, especially during the winter months. “If you notice any signs of gnawing or suspect rodent damage in your car, contact your insurer straight away,” he added. ◼

THE TRUCKING WORLD IS SET FOR HUGE CHANGES

Scania’s autonomous trucks with cuttingedge AI-based technology are going to change how the world moves within the near future. Now, the company announces the successful completion of a groundbreaking challenge that redefines the boundaries of self-driving vehicle technology and human achievement.

The challenge involved two autonomous trucks moving towards each other in perfect sync to create a window of less than a second for a professional mountain biker to jump through the opening in between them. It culminated in a world first, as Red Bull athlete Matt Jones successfully jumped between the two self-driving vehicles.

This feat brought together the creativity, engineering excellence and determination of teams from Scania, Red Bull and PlusAI to turn an ‘impossible’ vision into a reality. It was meticulously planned and executed, with advanced software development, practice sessions and safety checks taking place over several months.

Sustainability shift

Scania is revolutionising transport with autonomous solutions that redefine safety, operational efficiency and sustainability. The company’s mission is to drive the shift towards sustainable transport systems and autonomy is an essential part of that.

“Transport is a cornerstone of our daily lives and with that comes enormous responsibility to get goods to the right person or company in the most safe and efficient way. This challenge was a glimpse of what’s possible when breakthrough autonomous technology delivers precision and safety you can count on,” said Peter

Hafmar, head of autonomous solutions at Scania.

Scania’s autonomous solutions for mining and hub-to-hub logistics aim to improve efficiency and safety, reduce operating costs and minimise environmental impact, as well as alleviate the global driver shortage that poses a real challenge to many of its customers’ operations.

This technology is no longer just an idea for the future. The company’s autonomous mining trucks are already available to customers and this is just the beginning. Self-driving technology will soon be

moving onto highways, enabling hub-tohub freight transport. In fact, Scania is already active on European roads with safety drivers, in partnership with the Silicon Valley based company PlusAI.

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM LINCOLN FARM CAFÉ

RAYMOND WILCOX SPREADS SOME FESTIVE CHEER TO ALL YOU TRUCKERS OUT THERE

To the drivers on the road, new and old, as I look out the window of my old dad’s cafe, I still see the care and love that is needed in the world by all who live in it. I know from my own personal life that things can sometimes get hard – very hard. But if you have the chance to look at what you can do for others and ask for nothing back in return, then life will reward you with more riches than you can imagine.

Those who know me will understand that I’ve had a

rough year. So firstly, I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to all the people who have helped me cope, both at work and at home. You have helped me carry on when life seemed to be draining away from me. None of you gave up on me. For that, my cup pours over with love for you all.

How I appreciated all the videos that were sent to me from drivers on the road or in cafes, not to mention the texts or word-of mouth-messages, the hugs and  the prayers I received.

The love that has been given to me and my family is a testament to humanity at its very best, so to everyone who reads this, please understand and feel the warmth we feel. We are all loved more than we know.

I’d like to mention and praise all the staff who work at the café. They have been amazing, not just at work but supporting me and my family when we needed it most. Thank you all – I love you.

At this time of year, we celebrate Christmas. As it was written in history thousands

of years ago, there was a miracle given to us called Jesus. He never hurt anyone, he only helped and he’s still helping us now. He gives us hope, and as for me – well, he gave me a miracle too.

I open my heart to each and every one and as my dad would say ... from all the Wilcox family, myself and staff at Lincoln farm café, we wish you and your loved ones the best Christmas with lots of love and cheer and a happy new year for 2026.  God bless xxx
