LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy New Year to YOU! It’s 2026! As each new year rolls around, it’s traditional for many of us to make resolutions about what we’d like to do differently than in the past. Some of the most common resolutions include losing weight, eating healthier and achieving new goals: “Do more, achieve more, be more,” is how Joan Cassidy, owner of Squeeze Massage, puts it in her article in this issue. I join Joan in questioning, “What if the most transformative resolution isn’t about doing more, but caring more…for yourself?” I wholeheartedly agree that we would all enjoy life more if we shift our focus to self-care this year. Just thinking about getting a soothing massage on a regular basis, complete with essential oils, dim lighting and relaxing music, makes me feel renewed and uplifted. As Joan suggests, “Schedule the pause. Let rest become a ritual”—this is one resolution I can definitely get excited about keeping the entire year! Another commitment to self-care involves taking a little getaway—whether a weekend retreat or for a few hours of pampering—to one of the amazing unique wellness spas highlighted in this issue. Emerge energized and ready to face whatever life sends your way—"Whether it’s a few deep breaths, a simple walk or being your own cheerleader, these small moments of self-care build a stronger, more peaceful version of you,” our columnist Kim Pagano reminds us. Many locals have already discovered a nearby sanctuary in town where wellness reigns—JÜGO Wellness in Thousand Oaks, created to nourish body, mind and soul with its incredibly delicious and nutritious smoothies, acai bowls, juices and more. Made on-site daily using premium organic ingredients—free from preservatives, artificial fillers and seed oils—every menu item is created to uplift your mood and your body. Read all about their amazing offerings in this issue, which you’ll find is chockfull of articles about making self-care a priority this year. From scheduling annual checkups and pampering time at the med spa to implementing simple, yet powerful financial habits to ensure a secure and prosperous future, take time this year to do the things that make you feel happy and fulfilled. In Joy!

ARTICLE BY TRACY MARCYNZSYN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
When you step into JÜGO Wellness Bar in Thousand Oaks, it’s immediately clear this isn’t your typical juice spot. The air feels lighter, the energy calmer and the vibe—undeniably uplifting. Founded in 2023 inside Oakbrook Plaza, JÜGO Wellness is a family owned, mom-and-pop concept built on a mission to make wellness personal, purposeful and fun.
A FRESH TAKE ON WELLNESS
Every detail at JÜGO is intentional—from the minimalist, nature-inspired interior to the meticulously crafted menu. The brand’s mantra—“Simply organic. Unapologetically fresh. Undeniably Ü.”—echoes through every sip and bite. Each smoothie, juice and toast is made on-site daily using premium organic ingredients—free from preservatives, artificial fillers and seed oils. In fact, the operation is 97% seed oil-free and nearly plastic-free. Whether you’re plant-based, health conscious or simply curious about cleaner living, JÜGO makes it approachable, energizing and delicious. Take The Signature smoothie—a vegan powerhouse of organic açaí, banana, blueberry, raw almond butter, vitamin B12, maca, flaxseeds, L_glutmaine and plant protein. Or the Goddess juice—a refreshing green blend of organic celery, kale, cucumber, green apple, mint, lemon and ginger that revitalizes from the inside out. Even comfort classics like Almond Butter Toast become elevated creations—topped with organic banana, strawberry and blueberry, drizzled with raw honey and bee pollen.

SUSTAINABILITY AT THE CORE
For JÜGO, sustainability isn’t a marketing trend— it’s a promise. The brand uses eco-friendly packaging, compostable utensils and locally sourced produce, and offers discounts for customers who return bottles from their cleanse programs. The Classic, Verde Core and Inner Current juice cleanses are designed to detox, alkalize and recharge—supporting both the body and the planet through conscious consumption. “We take care of the planet while taking care of you” is more than a tagline—it’s a way of operating.
A SANCTUARY FOR EVERYDAY WELLNESS
MORE THAN A MENU—IT’S A MOVEMENT
JÜGO’s story runs deeper than food. The name itself reflects connection—the letter “Ü” represents closeness and unity. At its core, JÜGO is about building community, nourishing both body and mind, and creating a culture around conscious living. That sense of connection shows up in every part of the brand— from Wellness Reset weekends and partnerships with like-minded companies such as Mara Beauty and WeNatal, to local charity initiatives that bring people together through shared values. JÜGO’s loyalty program, JÜGO Rewards, adds to that spirit of belonging. Guests receive 15% off their first visit and earn points toward free items and exclusive offers—because wellness should feel rewarding.
JÜGO isn’t just a post-workout stop; it’s a sanctuary for everyday balance. The calming environment, curated playlist and friendly baristas create a space where wellness feels effortless. Whether you’re sipping a Golden Latte made with organic turmeric, cinnamon, maple syrup and three ingredient almond milk or a Blue Lagoon Matcha Latte crafted with ceremonial-grade Nekohama matcha, coconut cream and E3Live® blue spirulina, every item is created to uplift your mood and your body. As JÜGO looks toward the future, expansion is already underway across Southern California—but one thing will always stay the same: its heart. No matter how much it grows, JÜGO will remain committed to community and craft—serving wellness, one organic sip at a time. Adventist Health Simi Valley leads the way in next-generation cardiac care
Heart-Healthy New Year
As the new year begins, many of us focus on healthier habits—more movement, better nutrition and renewed attention to our wellbeing. But few resolutions are more important than taking care of your heart. At Adventist Health Simi Valley, that commitment to heart health has never been stronger. Over the past year, the hospital has introduced groundbreaking technology, expanded treatment options and achieved national recognition for life-saving excellence—ensuring that local patients can access leading-edge cardiac care close to home.

“This is truly the future of arrhythmia treatment,” says Cath Lab Medical Director Dr. Thanh Nguyen. “We’re able to perform these procedures more efficiently and with greater safety, giving patients the freedom to get back to living their lives.” Restoring the Heart’s Strength For patients experiencing severe heart failure, Adventist Health Simi Valley has also expanded its use of the Impella® heart pump, one of the smallest and most advanced heart-support devices in the world. The device temporarily assists the heart’s pumping function during high-risk interventions or after a heart attack, allowing it to rest and recover. “We’ve had incredible success using the Impella in patients who might not have survived otherwise,” says Dr. Nguyen. “It’s a powerful reminder that innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about giving people more tomorrows.” CONTINUED >
Innovation That Saves Lives Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, but advances in cardiovascular care are changing what’s possible. At Adventist Health Simi Valley, investments in innovation are transforming outcomes for patients every day. The hospital’s state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab—known as the “cath lab”—is at the heart of these advancements. Here, cardiologists perform complex procedures to open blocked arteries, restore blood flow and help patients avoid open-heart surgery. This past year, the lab added new technologies that are reshaping recovery and redefining hope. One of the most exciting developments is the introduction of the pulse field ablation (PFA), a next-generation approach to treating atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart rhythm disorder affecting millions of Americans. Unlike traditional methods that use heat or freezing to correct abnormal electrical signals, PFA uses pulsed-field energy to precisely target the tissue responsible for the arrhythmia while minimizing damage to surrounding areas. The result: faster procedures, shorter recovery times and less discomfort for patients.

“Our goal is not just to treat heart disease, but to help prevent it. When we talk about a fresh start for your heart, that means meeting people wherever they are in their journey and giving them the tools to live healthier, longer lives.” — DR. NGUYEN
One such patient arrived in full cardiac arrest. Within minutes, the cardiac team activated the hospital’s STEMI protocol—a rapid-response process designed for heart attack emergencies. The Impella was placed to support the heart during treatment, and the patient made a remarkable recovery. Stories like these underscore why Adventist Health Simi Valley was honored with the Get With the Guidelines - Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Receiving Gold Award for exceptional heart attack care, placing it among an elite group of hospitals nationwide recognized for meeting the highest standards of speed and outcomes. Comprehensive Care, Every Step of the Way What truly sets Adventist Health Simi Valley apart is its full continuum of heart care—from diagnosis and prevention to advanced treatment and rehabilitation. Patients have access to trusted general cardiologists for ongoing heart health management, a highly specialized cath lab for interventional procedures and a dedicated cardiac rehabilitation program to support recovery and long-term wellness. “Our patients don’t have to leave Simi Valley to receive world-class heart care,” explains Sari A. Nabulsi, MD, chief medical officer. “Whether it’s preventive care, advanced treatment in our cath lab or guided recovery through cardiac rehab, we’re here for every step of the journey.” This integrated approach ensures that every patient receives seamless, coordinated care tailored to their unique needs, whether managing chronic heart disease or recovering from a major cardiac event. A Heart Program Built on Collaboration Behind every success story is a team of specialists who share a singular focus: saving lives. The hospital’s multidisciplinary approach brings together cardiologists, emergency physicians, nurses and critical-care

experts to ensure round-the-clock collaboration. Through this teamwork, patients receive the right intervention at the right moment—a difference that can mean everything when seconds count. “Every person on our cardiac team plays a vital role,” says President of Adventist Health Simi Valley Alice Issai. “From the emergency room to the cath lab and ICU, their dedication and skill reflect our mission to provide whole-person care—body, mind and spirit.” Empowering the Community While technology and expertise define the hospital’s reputation, prevention remains at the heart of its mission. Through community outreach, educational events and partnerships with local organizations, Adventist Health Simi Valley is empowering residents to take control of their heart health before problems arise. Screenings, wellness workshops and primary care connections help people identify risks early and make lifestyle changes that last. “Our goal is not just to treat heart disease, but to help prevent it,” Issai adds. “When we talk about a fresh start for your heart, that means meeting people wherever they are in their journey and giving them the tools to live healthier, longer lives.” Looking Ahead For those who’ve already experienced the team’s life-saving care, that future is personal. For those beginning their heart-health journey, it’s an invitation. “This is the perfect time to take a proactive step,” says Dr. Nabulsi. “Schedule that check-up, talk to your doctor and make this the year you put your heart first.” Every day is a new opportunity to start fresh, live fully and trust your heart to the team leading the way in innovation and care. A Fresh Plan for 2026
New Year, New Financial You: Growing up, I was taught to avoid strangers and to say no to drugs, but no one ever told me that ignoring financial planning could be just as risky. Looking back, I realize how much time and opportunity I let slip away by not taking control of my financial future sooner. As we enter 2026, it’s the perfect time to reflect on some simple yet powerful financial habits that can help lead toward a secure and prosperous future.
ARTICLE BY RYAN PARKER, CFS®, FINANCIAL ADVISOR

1) MAKE MORE THAN YOU SPEND—WITHOUT LIVING LESS Be strategic with spending. Audit subscriptions and small recurring charges that deliver little value. Trim waste, not joy. There’s a balance between enjoying life today and over-tightening the belt: a dinner that deepens friendships may be money well spent; a forgotten subscription quietly draining your account is not. Remember the opportunity cost—every frivolous dollar isn’t just spent; it’s a dollar that could have compounded for your future. The highest impact lever to pull is your income. In most fields, those at the top of their craft earn multiples of the average paycheck in the same role. Make advancement your primary focus: educate, upskill, pursue credentials, seek mentors, take stretch assignments, negotiate and stay open to firms that better reward your impact. Block time every week for deliberate career growth—treat it like a standing meeting with your future self. Over time, even modest increases in compensation, compounded, can outweigh most budget tweaks. 2) INVEST THE EXCESS—THOUGHTFULLY AND PROFESSIONALLY DIY investing can be tempting, but professional guidance adds perspective, discipline and efficiency. A good advisor aligns your portfolio with your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance—and helps you stay the course when headlines are loud. By delegating, you reclaim hours to do what drives wealth most: become an expert in your field, advance your career and grow your income, while your capital is managed with intention. The aim isn’t to swing for the fences, but to run a durable, tax-aware, risk-aware plan that can compound over time. 3) PROTECT AGAINST LARGE LOSSES—CONTROL THE DOWNSIDE The overlooked pillar of wealth building is preservation (and this is where the right financial advisor can make all the difference). Big setbacks can erase years of progress—and for many of us, there simply isn’t enough time or runway to fully recover— so controlling risk matters as much as pursuing growth. Diversify
across asset classes so weakness in one area doesn’t derail your plan. Consider tactical approaches. Avoiding deep drawdowns can preserve the conditions for compounding over time. Protection extends beyond markets. Insurance—health, life, disability, property—can help ensure that unexpected events don’t become financial crises. An emergency fund and thoughtful estate planning add further resilience. A NEW YEAR, A DURABLE MINDSET As you step into 2026, embrace simple, intuitive habits that can significantly enhance your financial future. Focus on earning diligently, spending with intention, investing wisely and protecting your assets consistently. These straightforward practices can help you build a solid foundation for long-term success. If you're looking for help growing and protecting your wealth, consider reaching out for professional guidance. RESOLVE TO REST: A New Way to Start the Year Instead of chasing “more,” make self-care your resolution this January

Every January, the world tells us to do more, achieve more, be more. “New Year, New You” promises that effort equals fulfillment. But what if the most transformative resolution isn’t about doing more, but caring more…for yourself?
Being human is hard work. We carry responsibilities, absorb the world’s noise and often forget that rest is not a reward. It’s essential. And yet, in the heart of winter, when our energy naturally draws inward, society urges us to sprint forward. Winter teaches us a different rhythm. Trees appear bare, but their roots are gathering strength. Animals retreat. Days are shorter. Our bodies crave the same: stillness, warmth, restoration. True renewal begins not with striving, but with softening, with letting go, with tending to ourselves in a human way. At Squeeze Massage, we believe the monthly massage is the perfect expression of that principle. It’s not indulgence. It’s ritualized care. Regular massage helps your nervous system reset, eases tension, improves sleep and fosters calm that carries into everyday life. One massage soothes; regular massage transforms. It teaches the body to release strain and stress and the mind to associate stillness with safety. The environment plays a surprising role in that restoration. Dim lighting signals the brain that it’s
time to slow down. Soft, soothing sounds can quiet the mind. Gentle warmth helps muscles relax, while calming scents from essential oils engage the senses and invite presence. By intentionally shaping your surroundings, even briefly, you enhance your ability to truly rest and reset. Instead of chasing a “new you,” try befriending the one you already are. Make a resolution that honors your natural rhythm. Schedule the pause. Let rest become a ritual. At Squeeze Massage Westlake Village, we make it simple to prioritize wellness. Our private, customizable massage experiences in a restorative environment help your body reset, your mind settle and your energy restore. It’s a resolution you can keep all year—one that asks for presence, not perfection. The most sustainable transformation isn’t about doing more. It’s about showing up for yourself. Visit Squeeze Massage at 30885 E Thousand Oaks Blvd, in Westlake Village or book your massage today at SqueezeMassage.com.

At Method of Beauty, the art of looking and feeling your best is elevated through a precise melding of medical expertise and aesthetic finesse. Founded and led by husband-and-wife team Dr. David Chahine and Michele Chahine, PA-C, this Westlake Village practice has quickly become a regional beacon for holistic beauty and wellness. Michele launched the brand in 2020 with the ambition to craft a dedicated space where luxury aesthetics meet deeply personalized care. As her clients’ needs expanded, she joined forces with her husband, Dr. David, to bring a more fully integrated medical dimension to the work. Together, they forged
a sanctuary where regenerative therapies, natural-beauty enhancements and concierge medicine coexist. In Westlake Village, the practice marries advanced aesthetic techniques with a wellness-first philosophy. Their mission is simple yet profound: to support each patient’s journey toward vitality, confidence and lasting wellness. “We don’t just deliver treatments—we craft an experience that’s as luxe as it is life-altering,” says Dr. David. What distinguishes Method of Beauty is the full scale of services overseen by a board-certified physician, combined with the artistry of injectables, skin therapies and longevity protocols. “We bring medicine’s precision into beauty’s world while preserving a warm, compassionate environment,” Dr. David explains. For Michele—who grew up in Agoura Hills and now lives in the Conejo Valley— the location is personally meaningful. “Settling here brought us closer to family and into a community that already felt like home,” she notes. Michele brings over a decade of hands-on experience as a master injector and educator, training other providers nationally. Her refined approach ensures each procedure is executed with artistry and respect for each individual’s natural beauty. In just its first year in the area, the clinic has become deeply embedded in the community, earning trust via personalized care and transformational results. Services span concierge medicine, physician-guided weight management, regenerative therapies, skin science and luxury facials. “From day one we felt embraced by the local community,” Dr. David reflects. “Walking into a place where people genuinely care about one another has made our work deeply fulfilling.”
At Method of Beauty, patients gain access to a rare integration under one roof: medical oversight, aesthetic refinement, longevity strategies and wellness shaping—all personalized to the individual. Whether you’re focusing on appearance or inner vitality, the team helps you feel truly confident, inside and out. Method of Beauty offers a unique destination for those seeking more than a typical med-spa experience. With Dr. David bringing concierge medicine and longevity protocols while Michele applies her master craftsmanship in injectables and aesthetics, the result is a refined journey toward wellness, beauty and confidence. Every element— design, service, outcome—serves one goal: helping patients live beautifully at every stage of life. Why settle for the ordinary when you can experience the extraordinary? At Method of Beauty, precision, artistry and personal care converge to help you look refreshed, radiant and authentically you.

Coalition for Family Harmony: 50 YEARS OF LIFESAVING SERVICE IN VENTURA COUNTY
For 5 decades, the Coalition for Family Harmony has been a lifeline for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault across Ventura County. Founded by a small group of dedicated volunteers who began with a simple phone line in their homes, the organization has grown into a full-service agency that provides comprehensive, compassionate and culturally competent care for individuals and families in crisis. Today, under the leadership of Executive Director Dr. Caroline Prijatel-Sutton, the Coalition offers a continuum of services that support clients from the moment of crisis through the journey to healing. Programs include 24/7 emergency and transitional housing, rape crisis intervention, counseling, legal and medical assistance, education and outreach, and advocacy. The organization’s holistic approach ensures that every survivor—regardless of gender, age or background—receives the resources and support needed to rebuild their life. “While more women statistically report domestic violence and sexual assault, we serve women, men, children and entire families,” says Dr. Prijatel-Sutton. “Our mission is to meet the needs of the community by providing programs that are effective, inclusive and sustainable.”

“Our mission is to meet the needs of the community by providing programs that are effective, inclusive and sustainable.”
One of the Coalition’s distinguishing features is its commitment to creating programs that fill critical gaps in local services. The organization operates Ventura County’s only Rape Crisis Center and an Indigenous shelter staffed by trilingual advocates, ensuring survivors from diverse communities receive culturally sensitive care. By partnering with local agencies and service providers, the Coalition maximizes resources to ensure every client’s needs are met. As the Coalition celebrates its 50th anniversary, it reflects on its remarkable journey—from a grassroots movement to a countywide leader in crisis response and prevention. What began as a single hotline has evolved into an integrated network of lifesaving services that touches thousands of lives each year. Looking ahead, the organization remains focused on expanding its impact and advocating for a safer, more compassionate community. “We are proud of our history, but even more excited about the future,” says Dr. Prijatel-Sutton. “Our goal is to continue serving Ventura County with excellence for the next 50 years and beyond.” The Coalition will host its annual Denim Day fundraiser on April 29, 2026, inviting the community to stand in solidarity with survivors and support its mission of healing and empowerment. For more information, visit TheCoalition.org or call 805.983.6014. The 24/7 crisis line is available at 800.300.2181.

LOGAN INVESTMENTS:
Empowering Borrowers When Banks Can’t
Since 1989, Logan Investments has earned a sterling reputation as a lifeline for borrowers who need swift, reliable financing when conventional banks can’t deliver. With more than $3 billion in loans funded, the company has mastered the art of bridging financial gaps through precision lending and a deeply personal approach.

A LEGACY OF AGILITY AND TRUST
What began as a small, family driven equity lending firm has evolved into one of Southern California’s most respected private money lenders. Known for its ability to fund loans in as little as 3 days, Logan Investments offers unmatched responsiveness in a landscape often bogged down by bureaucracy. Its client roster includes real estate investors, developers and homeowners who depend on timely capital to act quickly in a competitive market.
PERSONAL CONNECTIONS, PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS
President Ron Sentchuk credits the company’s success to its unwavering commitment to communication, transparency and creativity. “We’ve built our reputation on personal relationships and trust,” he says. “Clients reach out to us because they know we deliver when others can’t.” F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FI NANCE + LE GAL SE RVICE S
Logan Investments bases its loan decisions solely on property equity—streamlining approvals and bypassing the lengthy credit or income checks demanded by traditional institutions. The firm’s portfolio includes commercial, residential, industrial and multifamily properties, with loans typically structured from 1 to 3 years. Funding comes from a network of high-net-worth individuals and family offices, providing both stability and flexibility.
FLEXIBILITY THAT FOSTERS OPPORTUNITY
At Logan Investments, clients work directly with decision-makers to develop loans tailored to their needs. Whether it’s a first, second or even third position loan, the company structures terms that align with each borrower’s timeline and goals. This adaptability allows clients to pursue opportunities—acquisitions, refinances or construction projects—that might otherwise be out of reach.
SIMPLIFYING THE LENDING EXPERIENCE
More than just a lender, Logan Investments functions as a financial partner committed to simplifying the borrowing experience. Every transaction is guided by the company’s core principle: fast funding without the frustration. Its hands-on service and well-honed expertise have made Logan Investments the “go-to” referral for accountants, business managers, financial planners and real estate professionals throughout California. As Sentchuk puts it, “Our mission is simple—to help people when traditional banks can’t. H i l l c re s t Christian School: EDUCATION FOR LIFE
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
48
LOCA LS ON LY | EDUCATION
Located in the heart of Thousand Oaks, Hillcrest Christian School is a preschool through 12th grade community devoted to partnering with parents to raise the next generation to impact the world for Jesus Christ. For almost 5 decades, Hillcrest students have been known individually, loved sacrificially and equipped intentionally. Students are prepared not only for academic success but also for a lifelong walk with Christ. At Hillcrest, teachers are more than educators—they are disciplers who build genuine relationships with their students and model the grace and compassion of Jesus in every interaction. This commitment shapes the atmosphere of every classroom, from the joyful energy of preschool and the engaging elementary environment to the rigorous college preparatory setting of high school. A SCHOOL FOR ALL AGES In preschool, children are welcomed into a nurturing environment that includes a beautiful new playground where caring teachers help them grow in the love of Jesus. Students learn through song, play and hands-on exploration as they develop fine motor skills, grow physically, build social and emotional confidence and develop early foundations in math, reading and writing. Every moment, from morning circle to outdoor play, gives children an opportunity to understand that they are uniquely gifted and loved by God. In elementary school, students flourish through strong academics, encouraging teachers and learning experiences that bring content to life. They benefit from enrichment classes taught by specialized instructors in art, music, Spanish, computers, library, physical education and afterschool sports. Students study eight master artists each year in art, learn four instruments in music and participate in field trips that extend learning beyond the classroom. Lessons are creative, purposeful and rooted in a Christian worldview, allowing students to discover and develop their God-given gifts. In middle school, students are personally known by their teachers. They are supported as they grow in identity, purpose and calling. A meaningful part of this experience is weekly small groups after Wednesday chapel. Students meet to discuss and apply chapel teachings, pray for one another and offer accountability
and encouragement. These groups create a safe place where students can be vulnerable, ask questions and build relationships with teachers who consistently point them to Christ. This is one of the ways Hillcrest partners with families to ensure students are hearing the same message at Home, Church and School. In high school, families partner with a dedicated college counselor, and students choose academic pathways that reflect their interests, strengths and goals. Hillcrest offers dual-enrollment courses taught on campus by adjunct professors, along with Advanced Placement and Honors courses. Students can explore passions in fine arts, world languages, technology, leadership and many other areas. This well-rounded experience prepares them to become confident, thoughtful graduates equipped for the next chapter of their lives. “I met people who would never leave my side on my spiritual journey,” shares a Hillcrest Christian high schooler. “Waking up every day and putting on my uniform is such an honor to me, and my friends will one day be my bridesmaids.” An alumni parent also ref lects on Hillcrest’s enduring impact. “My son was challenged academically and grew deeply in his walk with Christ. Hillcrest helped shape the man he is today. He is centered on God’s will, confident in his calling and surrounded by friendships that still last.” Fully accredited through the Association of Christian Schools International and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Hillcrest consistently celebrates academic excellence across all grade levels. Graduates are accepted to excellent colleges and universities, often receiving significant scholarships and substantial college credit earned at Hillcrest. “At Hillcrest, education is discipleship. It is a joy and privilege to partner with families in nurturing each child’s faith and equipping them to confidently use their God-given gifts to build up God’s kingdom and help make Heaven crowded,” says Head of School Dan Vande Pol. “Here, children are known, loved and equipped for every good work, as written in 2 Timothy 3:16-17.” To learn more about Hillcrest Christian School, visit HillcrestCS.org or call 805.497.7501.

Conversations With Yourself It’s important for others to like you, but the most important thing is for you to like you. In a world filled with noise, opinions and expectations, it’s easy to forget that the most important conversation you’ll ever have is the one with yourself. Most of us spend so much time trying to make others like us—to say and do the right thing, to fit in, to be approved of— that we sometimes forget our quiet voice that we all have inside us that needs our own love and kindness first. When was the last time you truly listened to yourself, without judgment, without comparison and without rushing to fix anything? The truth is, self-acceptance isn’t selfish; it’s self-love, it’s the foundation of every healthy relationship and to our health. Just like we can heal ourselves, we can also hurt ourselves. When you learn to love who you are, flaws and all, you show others how to do the same and mostly how to treat you with love and respect. Take a few moments each day to check in with yourself. Ask: How am I really feeling? What do I need right now? What in my life is working? Then give yourself permission to honor that. Whether it’s a few deep breaths, a simple walk or being your own cheerleader, these small moments of self-care build a stronger, more peaceful version of you. Make showing up with confidence your new style.

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED
The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows. CONTINUED >

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”
Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.
6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”
Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A

proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.
7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”
Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
