Our theme this month is explore, and July is the perfect month to get out there and discover new places to go and things to do. Whether it’s taking a road trip with family or friends, jumping on a plane to a farther off destination or scouting out a new hiking trail or restaurant closer to home, venturing out into the world to explore something new yields immeasurable benefits.

This month’s columnist, Barton Goldsmith, in his “10 Tips for Summer Fun,” encourages us to “do the new,” noting that experiencing new adventures with others helps us connect and build strong bonds.
Our resident columnist Kim Pagano also shares how exploring new places sparks inspiration and fresh ideas. Fortunately, our area is brimming with exciting, wonderful things to explore.
Mizel Estate Wines is one of them that’s highlighted in this issue. Located in the pristine Hidden Valley, the winery offers breathtaking scenery with roses, vines and the spectacular Santa Monica Mountains towering above. Spending an afternoon at this magical locale offers a peaceful respite from the fast-paced world of responsibilities and to-do lists. In addition to wine tastings, guests can take an art class or wind down with yoga and a sound bath.
A little further up the road in Paso Robles is another fun destination to discover and sample some world-class wines. Publishers Ben and Robin share some of their favorite places to wine and dine that they’ve discovered during their annual trip to Paso Robles, where small-town charm makes for a heartfelt visit. “The town square is a modern version of a traditional Norman Rockwell painting,” says Ben.
Another quintessential slice of American nostalgia can be found in Nashville, Tennessee, where travel writer Melissa Curtin takes us beyond the crowds and cover bands to historic neighborhoods and culinary destinations to drool for. Read all about it and more in the pages that follow.
We hope this issue inspires you to explore and discover some amazing new finds this summer.
Bon Voyage!

Just a few miles from Westlake Village, down beautiful, oak-lined Potrero Road, time stops as you crest the hill and gaze over open pastures. In the heart of Hidden Valley in Thousand Oaks, you’ll find a local treasure, a gorgeous estate and vineyard where superb local wines originate.
Upon entering the breathtaking Mizel Estate, you step into a world apart. As you walk through the manicured grounds along stone-bound paths surrounded by roses and vines, a sense of peace envelops you. The Santa Monica Mountains rise around you while the rest of the world falls away.
Mizel Estate Wines is an unforgettable wine-tasting destination, situated in one of Conejo Valley’s most picturesque locales.
The name “Mizel” is a blend of the names of the owners, Michael and Zelene Fowler, who established the vineyard in 2014 with the goal of creating worldclass wines.
Mizel Estate Wines are grown on their 38-acre estate in the Malibu Coast AVA. The geography of Mizel Estate, located on a fertile valley floor protected by mountains, provides ideal growing conditions for exceptional fruit.
When you taste Mizel’s luxury wines, you drink in the pure expression of their vineyard.
“The real secret to Mizel’s superb red wines is the ground they come from. The soil brings the tannin structure and creates a certain elegance that is so difficult to find—and impossible to add,” says Mizel’s winemaker Guillaume Fabre.
Mizel Estate Wines is a boutique, limitedproduction winemaker, focused on quality. Sustainably grown and hand-harvested, only the highest-quality grapes are used for Mizel wines.
Mizel grows six French grape varieties on their estate: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah. Throughout the growing season, the vines are attentively nurtured to bring forth the premium characteristics of Mizel’s fruit. As harvest approaches, the grapes are carefully monitored to ensure that each variety is harvested at its peak.
The winemaking commences in Paso Robles with the crush and fermentation. Afterward, each grape varietal is aged in premier French oak for 18 months. When the aging is complete, the Fowlers meet with Fabre to skillfully blend Mizel Estate’s signature wines: First Impression Bordeaux Blend, Easy to Please Grenache and Smooth Touch Syrah.
The results of the Mizel team’s efforts shine through in their opulent red wines. Mizel’s nuanced, velvety red wines dazzle the palate with lingering flavors of fruit and spice.

Robin and I have made a visit to California wine country her December birthday’s annual tradition. It has been several years since we explored Paso Robles’ wineries. A lot has changed. The main change is that the premium wineries schedule almost exclusively by reservation and the bespoke wineries offer topshelf wine and food pairings as part of the experience. Another amazing part of the experience is the small-town charm of Paso Robles. The town square is a modern version of a traditional Norman Rockwell painting. It was all lit up for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The Americana pageantry also included a massive bonfire on New Year’s Eve that was celebrated by what looked like the entire population of Paso. What fun!
With the invaluable help of Chris Taranto, communications director of Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance, we were able to schedule wine and food pairings at several of the “best of the best” wineries. The wine and food pairings were complete gourmet small-bite meals, tastings of the best of their current releases plus some Library wines from their cellars. All three
were extraordinary experiences, reflecting the personality of each winery. What was consistent was the warm and welcoming hospitality. The visits not timed for food were just as special with tastings and tours that made each memorable. California wine touring like this should be the norm for anyone who wants to appreciate what makes a wine region special.
Paso Robles is home to many of the best Rhone varietal wines in California, or better yet, from any wine region. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre shine here. They also produce rich, deep and fruity Cabernet and Zinfandel. Creative wine makers are also blending varietals into wine that is sublime, perhaps better than the sum of its parts.
I am not going to tell you which wine had hints of blueberries or blackberries or which Syrah had hints of tobacco or licorice. I’ll leave that to the wine wonks. I will say the wineries we visited created wines that are equal or better than those in Napa or France. The hospitality is even better. Maybe they still have something to prove.
The following wineries are all outstanding. If I was scoring for a wine magazine, the combined average score would be a 94.

Le Couvier Winery Their wine is dry farmed, natural and barrel aged for 3 years. Their L’Enfant Du Pape GSM blend, a complex California version of a Chateauneuf-du-Pape, is my favorite. All visits are extraordinary wine and food pairings. The extended barrel aging was immediately apparent in the depth and quality of their new releases. We were greeted by three young and very knowledgeable hosts. The presentation and quality of the small bites and the wine got our Paso wine country trip off to a resounding start! LCWine.com
Hawks Hill Ranch Winery Their tasting room is at the top of a mountain with very special views and yummy wine. We enjoyed great hospitality and an interesting tour that included an other-worldly Manzanita grove. Because they have high elevation and western-facing slopes, the wine ranges from Chardonnay to Cabernet and really wonderful Rhone varietals. HHRWinery.com
Daou Vineyards Located atop Daou Mountain, it is a destination winery and deservedly popular for its highly rated and rich Bordeau varietals and blends. We were served a Michelin Star-worthy lunch and a selection of their ultra-premium Patrimony label. All in all, a cherished memory. DaouVineyards.com
Booker Wines They are a Rhône varietal house with Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne blends on the white side to premium very hearty and sophisticated Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. A unique feature is an underground space where you can taste and view the layers of the terroir in which the grapes are grown. BookerWines.com
Linne Calodo Winery Rhône-inspired reds to innovative white blends are their hallmark. The estate is the vision of Matt Trevisan, a pioneer in blending Rhône varietals with bold, expressive character. Their selection reinforces my recent conversion from a Bordeau-first wine person to preferring Rhône. I found that I could easily enjoy Rhône varietals with any meal. Perfect food-friendly wine . LinneCalodo.com

Epoch Estate Wines There is a lot of history at the winery on York Mountain. The award-winning tasting room design is so beautiful it almost overwhelms the quality of the wine. However, the Bordeau, Rhine and Spanish varietals are excellent. I especially enjoyed their Tempranillo and Zinfandel. The Zin was a tribute to Paso’s famous West Side Zin tradition. EpochWines.com
Barton Family Wines & Grey Wolf Cellars For me, this modest winery, restaurant and tasting room set in a basic farmhouse is the ultimate “West Side” Paso winery. Modest and really darn good! You can find just about any varietal or blend that can do well in Paso. They were all 90+ and reasonably priced. Their Chenin Blanc cured me of not really liking Chenin Blanc. It was served along with a rich and earthy mushroom soup. BartonFamilyWines.com
We dined at Il Cortile and it was as delicious as ever; our favorite Paso restaurant. To sum it up, Paso Robles has become our favorite wine country destination. It’s an easy 3-hour drive from Thousand Oaks and it is a whole lot less expensive to visit and explore than Napa or Sonoma.

AWA Y FROM THE CROWDS AND COVER BANDS, A MORE REFINED NASHVILLE EMERGES
MELISSA CURTIN

Hopping among the honky-tonks along Broadway is a quintessential Nashville experience. But the city’s true character reveals itself beyond the strip. Away from the crowds and cover bands, a more refined Nashville emerges, with a thriving culinary scene, historic neighborhoods and intimate live music venues.

The Grand Ole Opry’s 100th anniversary was magical, featuring a parade of country royalty—Keith Urban, Blake Shelton, Trace Adkins and Vince Gill—honoring country legend Ronnie Milsap.
One of the night’s most mesmerizing performances came from 26-year-old Ella Langley, delivering a tear-jerking rendition of Milsap’s “I Wouldn’t Have Missed It For The World,” before performing her original, “Dandelion.” Her hit, “Choosin’ Texas,” has been Billboard’s No. 1 Country Song for over 20 weeks.
In Nashville, live music doesn’t begin and end at a venue. It greets travelers at the airport, drifts from open windows and plays throughout the city. Begin a day with the Walk of Fame Park, a landmark honoring musicians and industry professionals of all genres.
Before the Grand Ole Opry, the Ryman Auditorium (est. 1892) was the soul of Nashville—a premier concert venue boasting amazing acoustics. Deemed the Mother Church of Country Music, artists are honored to perform. If you can’t make one of the 200 shows a year, the venue offers daytime tours yearround, where artists like Bruce Springsteen, Harry Styles and Lizzo have performed.
Along Music Row, find Historic RCA Studio B, Elvis’ favorite place to record. Open since 1942 and nicknamed “The Home of a Thousand Hits,” Studio B became famous in the 1960s for producing what has come to be known as “The Nashville Sound.” Roy Orbison, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings and the Everly Brothers all recorded here.
Fascinating exhibits abound at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, especially the wing exploring Dolly Parton’s 60-year career, focusing on how she overcame industry obstacles and critics, with a delightful array of costumes, handwritten lyrics, old photos and vintage videos.
In 2021, the National Museum of African American Music debuted in the new Fifth-andBroadway complex, in the heart of downtown. NMAAM integrates history and interactive technology to share the untold story of more than 50 music genres and subgenres.
Belmont University’s Gallery of Iconic Guitars houses some of the most iconic stringed exhibitions—experiential and not behind glass. Pick up and play an instrument from the collection!

In 2019, the Frederic Hart Studio Museum opened to showcase one of America’s greatest sculptors. Hart created works that changed the national landscape, like Washington National Cathedral’s Creation Sculptures and the “Three Soldiers” bronze at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. While there are no finished works in the studio, it offers a glimpse into Hart’s process.
Since 2003, LeQuire Gallery & Studio has showcased Nashville’s most popular artists. Learn about the clay-to-bronze process in the artist studio, where the daily life of Alan LeQuire’s monumental works of art come alive, like grand tree trunk torsos, colossal heads of influential American musicians and activists, and large-scale relief sculptures. Discover how he came to create Musica, one of the largest sculpture groups in the U.S. that may soon become a Bellagio-like fountain. LeQuire’s other famous works can also be found around town such as Nashville Women’s Suffrage Memorial and a 42-foot replica of an ancient Athena Pathenos.
History & Heritage
Dive into the Victorian era at Belmont Mansion, a historic museum on the campus of Belmont University. Explore one of the few 1850s-era homes still standing, while learning about the people—free, enslaved and immigrant—whose stories make this site worth understanding.
One of the most elaborate antebellum homes in the South features 36 rooms and 19,000 square feet and was built by the Acklen family, boasting such luxuries as lavish gardens, an art gallery, a bowling alley and even a zoo. Most impressive is the lightfilled 58-foot Grand Salon, with original wallpaper in one corner, original Venetian glass windows that cast colorful light and the Tennessee chocolate marble fireplace.
Belle Meade, a former 5,400-acre private plantation, was famous for its thoroughbred horse breeding. Built in the mid-to-late 1800s, four presidents have stayed at the 1853 Greek Revival Mansion. Equine art lines the entrance, telling the stories of America’s oldest horse nursery and most famous horses. The 30 acres that remain showcase architectural treasures like a gardener’s house, an ice house to store food, a pig smokehouse, a carriage house and a mausoleum.

Tour Belle Meade and sip bourbon or wine with a food pairing at Nashville’s first and oldest winery. The newly renovated hay loft is now a gorgeous culinary space with a wine bar and library.
Southern Hospitality Meets Global Cuisine
Nashville’s culinary reputation has expanded almost as rapidly as its population. In 2025, the Michelin Guide launched a new American South edition and debuted in Nashville, recognizing 21 venues with several receiving one star.
Try vegetable-forward dishes and naturally leavened crisp thin pizzas like Pecorino Fonduta with pancetta and chive doused in egg yolk with a spritz of lemon at Folk.
In Germantown, 5th & Taylor occupies a historic warehouse anchored by a grand sculpture of General Francis Nash, Nashville’s namesake. Share a Grilled Wedge Salad, Tomato Pie and Buttermilk Biscuits with apple jam and reserve cheddar; then indulge in hearty comfort dishes like Lamb Pot Roast with butternut squash, Short Rib with mashed potatoes, and Beer Can Chicken.
For breakfast in the Hillsboro Village neighborhood, the Pancake Pantry has been serving scratch-made pancakes since 1961. While eggs, waffles, sandwiches and salads are available starting at 6 a.m., this low-key spot is the place to try a pancake sampler: Caribbean (pecan, coconut, sliced bananas), peanut butter chocolate chip and sweet potato, a Taylor Swift favorite.
Pioneering carhop service, iconic retro Mel’s Diner, opened its first location outside of California, in Nashville, in 2025. Order all-day breakfast at this 1950s-inspired restaurant in the heart of downtown, near honky-tonk row, or sink your teeth into
Mel’s popular smash burger with fried pickles or short rib grilled cheese, paired with a milkshake. Since you’re in the South, top it off with the Tennessee whiskey chocolate pecan pie.
For bold Italian flavors and big vibes, fun new buzzy V Modern Italian feeds all five senses. Stracciatella arrives playfully smoking out the side of the glass while tableside delights include a cannoli carrier filling Italian cream shells and a Cocktail Carousel cart concocting cocktails with smoking dry ice. Choose from housemade pastas, wood-fired pizzas and festive dishes crafted in collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Stefano Ciotti.
Nashville After Dark
Ready to laugh it up? Legendary Zanies Comedy Club is the place to go! Your phone is sealed at the door and the comedy scene draws national headliners and makes for a therapeutic evening. Soon, one of the most exciting and gorgeous venues to come to Music City will be tucked behind Mel’s Diner—the Vinyl Vault—a Prohibition-style bar with multiple rooms.
The New Nashville
Country music may have built Nashville’s reputation, but today, the city’s cultural identity stretches far and wide. From legendary recording studios to late-night bluegrass sessions, acclaimed museums and an evolving culinary scene, Nashville continues to reinvent itself while remaining true to its musical heritage. Step beyond Broadway’s neon glow, and Music City reveals a richer rhythm that plays on long after the last honkytonk band finishes its set.

Summer vacations can only be what you make them, but if you don’t take a break at least once a year, you could end up feeling burnt out and like life is passing you by, so it’s important to find a way to get away from it all, even if that means staying home. Here are some tips.
ARTICLE BY BARTON GOLDSMITH

1. In Southern California, we get to be outdoors quite a bit, but summers can be brutal. Still, I do my best to get out there and take more walks (one in the morning and another in the cooler evenings) and leave the windows open as much as possible (it helps with sleep). And this is barbeque season, so I get to hone my grill skills.
2. In summer, try to dine at restaurants that have outdoor seating. Go to your favorites, but be sure to try something different as well. Even if you just go for happy hour, sitting in the balmy summer air will make the food taste better, and most people enjoy the experience more.
3. Get into, by or on the water. The negative ions bouncing off a body of water will make you feel a little better no matter what. If you are not into swimming, just lying on the shore or taking in the view of a lake or the ocean will relax you while lifting your spirits.
4. Remember that if you travel with the kids, it’s gonna be a little crazy. If you factor in the chaos, it’s much easier to deal with the ups and downs of a real family vacation. I also recommend that parents get away by themselves for a little while. It will strengthen your connection.
5. Do the new. Research has shown that couples and families who share new experiences together build strong bonds. These new experiences create a brain chemical called oxytocoin, which is also known as the cuddle hormone. We just feel closer when we do new and different things with those we love.
6. If you like traveling alone, that’s cool. Some people need to get away by themselves for various reasons. To relax may be the main one, but if you are into meditation or creating individual art (painting, writing, music, etc.), you may want some time to reconnect with that part of your being.
7. Meeting new people is one of the best parts of summer. I have started conversations in a hotel lobby and then gone for a drink at the bar or out to dinner at a restaurant with people that none of us knew before. These make great vacation memories. You may never see these people again, or who knows? You may all become BFFs and meet somewhere new next year.
8. Unplug. In order to let your entire being truly feel relaxed, you have to disconnect from your phone and social media. Just one upset can make it difficult for you to really enjoy your vacation. I understand the need to check on things, but keep it to a minimum.
9. Don’t stress about money. If you’re on a paid vacation, that’s a real luxury, so allow yourself to enjoy splurging a little. If not, planning and paying ahead really helps, as does sticking to a budget. That way you can feel that the vacation is taken care of, and you can relax.
10. Make memories. One thing that keeps us connected is our shared experiences. If bungee jumping or doing a zip line is too radical for you, there are many other wonderful and new things you can do from anywhere.
If you are planning a staycation this year, all of the above still applies. I am sure that there are many adventures and sights to see within an hour of your home, so go and explore what’s out there!

At Newbury Park Dental Arts, dentistry is about far more than cleanings and checkups—it’s about transforming lives. Dr. Cristina Markiewicz and Dr. Jason Verdi have built a reputation for blending clinical excellence with genuine compassion, helping patients not only achieve healthier smiles, but renewed confidence.
“We deliver life-changing dentistry,” says Dr. Verdi. “We help people get healthy, look good and feel great about themselves.”
That philosophy is woven into every aspect of the patient experience. From preventive care to complex restorative treatments, the team takes a personalized approach, recognizing that each patient walks through the door with unique needs, concerns and goals.
“We treat people as individuals with families, jobs and lives—not as appointment numbers,” Dr. Verdi explains.
“Our goal is to empower patients to take charge of their oral health through education, clear treatment plans and compassionate care.”
One of the defining qualities of Newbury Park Dental Arts is its ability to provide truly comprehensive care under one roof. Patients can access preventive services such as cleanings, exams, digital X-rays and oral cancer screenings, as well as restorative treatments including crowns, bridges and full-mouth rehabilitation.
Cosmetic dentistry is also a popular focus, with services like teeth whitening, veneers and full smile makeovers helping patients achieve natural, confident results.
“We’re especially excited about our smile makeovers and minimal-preparation veneers,” says Dr. Verdi. “They can dramatically enhance a smile while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible.”
In addition, the practice offers dental implants, emergency care and sedation options designed to ease anxiety— an essential component of their patient-first philosophy.
“Our team is gentle and empathetic,” he says. “We work hard to reduce fear and build lasting relationships with our patients.”
Modern technology further enhances the experience, with tools like digital imaging and iTero scanning improving both accuracy and comfort. Combined with transparent pricing, insurance assistance and flexible financing options, the practice strives to make highquality care accessible to all.
Recently, Newbury Park Dental Arts welcomed a doctor to the team—Dr. Jason Verdi—whose expertise is already making a meaningful impact.
“Dr. Verdi excels in relieving dental pain and treating patients with longstanding dental fear and anxiety,” Dr. Markiewicz says. “He brings a calm, reassuring demeanor that immediately puts patients at ease.”
He expands the practice’s ability to provide prompt and effective care, particularly for those who may have delayed treatment due to fear or discomfort.
“With Dr. Verdi on board, we’re able to offer faster pain relief and more convenient scheduling,” she notes. “He’s especially skilled at helping anxious patients finally feel comfortable getting the care they need.”
Beyond improving access, Dr. Verdi strengthens the overall clinical capabilities of the team. His presence allows the practice to take on more complex restorative cases while maintaining the high level of individualized attention patients have come to expect.
“He enhances everything we do—from emergency care to long-term treatment planning,” says Dr. Markiewicz. “Ultimately, it means better outcomes and a better experience for our patients.”

For Dr. Verdi and his team, success is measured not just in healthy teeth, but in the confidence patients carry with them long after their appointments.
“Our ultimate goal is to improve overall health, selfconfidence and quality of life,” he says. “We want patients to feel proud of their smiles and confident in their care.”
That commitment is reflected in the practice’s strong patient reviews, which frequently highlight gentle treatment, effective pain relief and a welcoming, familyfriendly environment.

“What sets us apart is the balance between elevated presentation and genuine warmth,” Anna explains. “Every detail is designed to feel personal, never templated.”
This personalized approach is evident across the company’s most popular offerings. Curated grazing tables and boxes—beautifully arranged with a mix of flavors and textures—have become a signature, while elevated appetizer service continues to gain popularity for its interactive, social feel. Designed to encourage movement and conversation, these cocktail-style experiences allow guests to sample a variety of dishes while maintaining an elegant, polished atmosphere.
Anna Santiago Catering also provides full-service wedding catering, private chef dinners and corporate event catering, each tailored to reflect the unique tone and purpose of the occasion. Beyond the cuisine, it’s the company’s commitment to hospitality that truly defines the experience. Anna emphasizes collaboration and communication throughout the planning process, ensuring clients feel supported every step of the way.
The inspiration behind the business is deeply personal. For Anna, cooking has always been tied to family, culture and community—where meals were less about perfection and more about connection. What began as a lifelong passion has evolved into a professional pursuit, yet that original spirit remains at the core of every event.
“The goal is to create experiences where people feel seen, cared for and connected,” she says.
That intention resonates long after the last plate is cleared. Whether it’s a wedding celebration, a corporate gathering or an intimate dinner, Anna Santiago Catering strives to leave both hosts and guests with a lasting sense of warmth and shared experience.

The concept of the home has evolved from a simple shelter into a personalized sanctuary. At the heart of this transformation is the desire to blend indoor comfort seamlessly with outdoor luxury. For nearly 16 years, Thousand Oaks Fireside and Design has been a premiere destination for homeowners throughout Ventura, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties seeking this exact balance. Situated at 104 East Thousand Oaks Blvd, this full-service showroom has redefined the traditional hearth shop by offering cuttingedge fire features, custom outdoor kitchens and high-end design solutions.
Historically, fireplace shops focused strictly on traditional wood-burning units, basic mesh screens and iron tool sets. However, shifting environmental regulations and changing consumer preferences have pushed the industry to evolve. Local municipalities increasingly place restrictions on wood burning, driving demand for cleaner, highly efficient alternatives.
Under the management of Thomas Malinowski, Thousand Oaks Fireside and Design has embraced this shift. The company offers a curated portfolio of realistic, efficient electric and gas-burning units tailored to modern architectural tastes. Homeowners can explore options ranging from ultra-sleek linear gas fireplaces to dynamic see-through designs and versatile electric units. These modern units provide the cozy ambiance of a real fire without the cleanup, smoke or environmental drawbacks of traditional firewood.

This includes pre-cast stone mantels, custom surrounds and custom fireplace doors from Design Specialties. These premium finishes allow a fireplace to serve as a stunning architectural focal point in any room.

Beyond the living room, Thousand Oaks Fireside and Design has become a specialist in the booming "outdoor room" trend. Modern backyards are no longer just patches of lawn; they are extensions of the home used for entertaining, cooking and unwinding.
The store caters to this lifestyle by designing and fabricating custom barbecue islands and fully equipped outdoor kitchens. Rather than standard freestanding grills, homeowners can construct elaborate cooking environments using professional-grade equipment from Twin Eagles, Delta Heat and Luxor Outdoor Kitchen. These setups can include luxury amenities such as
• Built-in teppanyaki griddles and cooktops
• Outdoor refrigeration and ice makers
• Warming drawers and beer taps
• High-performance Alfa Pizza Ovens
To complete the outdoor atmosphere, the company incorporates gas fire pits from The Outdoor Plus, outdoor gas and wood-burning fireplaces and premium outdoor heating units such as Bromic, SunPak and Infratech to ensure comfort even on chilly coastal evenings.

What truly distinguishes this destination is its consultative approach to design. Converting a homeowner's backyard vision into reality can be challenging without visual references. To address this, the team uses 3D graphics software. Designers can create a virtual layout tailored to the customer’s space, incorporate precise models of selected grills into the rendering and show exactly how the finished project will look before any construction begins. Ultimately, Thousand Oaks Fireside and Design aims to deliver a smooth, high-quality experience that fosters long-term customer relationships. By integrating innovative clean-heat technology, premium outdoor cooking equipment and personalized design assistance, they equip local homeowners with the tools to enhance their indoor and outdoor living spaces.

First Choice Painting has built its reputation one brushstroke at a time—earning trust across the Conejo Valley through decades of craftsmanship, consistency and family pride.
Founded more than 40 years ago by Felix Lopez, Sr., the company remains deeply rooted in its original mission: delivering high-quality painting services with a personal touch. Today, that legacy continues through three generations—Felix Sr., Felix Jr. and Michael Lopez—each contributing to a family tradition that blends experience with evolving industry standards.
“We want to make you feel special about your home or business,” says Felix Lopez Jr., who carries forward the values his father instilled from the beginning.
From residential refreshes to large-scale commercial projects, First Choice Painting handles interior and exterior work of all sizes. Their approach goes beyond simply applying paint. Careful preparation—patching stucco, filling cracks, sanding surfaces and ensuring a clean foundation—remains a hallmark of their process, setting the tone for a finished product that lasts.
“We love painting houses and businesses,” Felix Jr. says. “It’s what we do—and it’s in our blood.”
That attention to detail has not gone unnoticed. In today’s review-driven marketplace, many clients first encounter First Choice Painting through glowing online testimonials. Across platforms like Angi, customers consistently highlight the team’s professionalism, efficiency and ease of collaboration.
“Felix and his crew performed an excellent job,” one client shared. “A lot of work went into preparation… stucco was patched, cracks were filled and caulked, and the wood was sanded smooth. Felix is a great individual—easy to work with and he shows pride in his work.”
For Felix Jr., those reviews reflect something deeper than customer satisfaction—they reinforce a long-standing commitment to doing things the right way.
“Our painters are highly qualified, and we take pride in being clean, professional, responsive and punctual,” he explains. “We aim to deliver great craftsmanship while offering real value to every customer.”
That commitment extends to the materials they use. First Choice Painting partners with trusted brands such as Benjamin Moore, SherwinWilliams and Dunn-Edwards, ensuring durability and high-quality finishes. The company also offers eco-friendly options and remains available for emergency painting needs when time is critical.
Serving communities throughout Santa Rosa Valley, Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Calabasas, Malibu, the Palisades and the San Fernando Valley, First Choice Painting has become a go-to resource for homeowners and businesses alike.
Every project is fully licensed, bonded and insured, with a guarantee that underscores the company’s confidence in its work.
“We love painting houses and businesses,” Felix Jr. says. “It’s what we do—and it’s in our blood.”
First Choice Painting is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. For a complimentary color consultation or to request a quote, call 805.273.1180.

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.
He calls days later.
That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.
The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.
The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.
“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.
Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.
3
No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.
4
Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.
5
The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.

One of my favorite things to do is explore. Whenever we travel and visit a new area, we love discovering the surrounding towns, local sights, hidden gems and especially the restaurants.
I love getting new ideas and seeing how different people and places do things. It inspires me. Sometimes the smallest experiences can open your mind in the biggest ways.
Are you stuck in your own bubble, or are you exploring new ideas?
Even in business, it’s exciting to look at fresh perspectives and change things up a bit. The same goes for cooking—I’m always trying new recipes and flavors just to spark creativity and discover something different.
Life isn’t very exciting if we never stretch ourselves. Think about the possibilities that can happen when you step outside your comfort zone. I think that’s one of the reasons I love my work on the radio so much. I get to hear new stories, meet incredible people and learn how others are living their best lives.
ARTICLE BY KIM PAGANO
One of the things I love most about our community here in Ventura County is how many incredible people, hidden gems and inspiring stories are waiting to be discovered. Every week I meet someone doing something amazing—opening a business, helping others, creating art, supporting families or simply showing kindness in a world that desperately needs more of it.
There are so many ways to enrich our lives if we stay curious. Where are you stuck? Where could you start thinking outside the box a little more?
Of course, not every new idea will be a great one… but you never know unless you try.
So this month, I encourage you to explore a little more:
• Take the scenic route.
• Try something new.
• Meet someone new.
• Say yes to an invitation.
• Support local.
• Get out from behind the screen and into real life. Because often the best discoveries aren’t places at all…they’re people, possibilities and moments we never expected. We’re better together.
With gratitude to my community and all the amazing people that have been on my journey,
Kim Pagano, Radio Host | Business Cheerleader | Connector
