Let’s start with our cover girl, Isabella Gertz. She is a 16-year-old Agoura Hills High School student who started a nonprofit to raise money to help families in need. Utilizing her culinary passion and skills she started BellasBakes.org. She’s also won individual awards for her creations. We love featuring a brilliant young woman who contributes to the welfare of our community.

Our article about the best local public and private schools are a wonderful example of what a fine community the Conejo Valley is to raise a family—so many fine educational choices for your children are right on your doorstep.

We also feature Oxnard’s Pacifica High School English teacher John Beck, this year’s Teacher of the Year for Ventura County. He is an excellent example of a lifelong educator staying in his community and ensuring that the next generation is successful.

We’re excited to share something a little different with the opening of The Little Kitchen Academy in the Oaks Mall this month. Kids of all ages will learn to cook. Just think Mom and Dad; your kids can make their breakfast and prepare their lunch while you enjoy your morning coffee. I’ve always loved cooking. I would drive my mom nuts with questions while she prepared dinner. Had she had this opportunity she would have enrolled me in a minute.

The pets in this issue are amazing too. It’s all about dogs this time, and what great information we have to share. OBOL continues to provide aid and comfort to animals in what is a stressful shelter environment. Gold Coast K9 provides safety tips on active summer activity for your kids and pets. As a “cat person,” I was not aware of what to watch out for, so this article is really enlightening.

The therapy dogs providing a calming environment for children is something that could have helped me many years ago to settle down, pay attention and get better grades. Having kids read to these gentle canines is a creative and effective way to promote a love of literacy.

Every year, this is perhaps my favorite issue. I hope you enjoy it.

Oaks Christian School begins the next chapter of the school’s illustrious history with the start of the 2026-27 school year with its newest grades TK-3. The addition of these grades makes the school a full TK-12 grade, college-preparatory, day and boarding school.

The new elementary grades will feature core subjects in English, math, science, history and Bible as well as exploratory classes in music, American Sign Language, art, physical education and STEM. The lower elementary campus is located at 975 Evenstar Ave in Westlake Village.

BELLA’S BAKES

LIGHTING UP LIVES WITH CUSTOM CAKES

Mixing creativity, compassion and initiative, local teen Isabella Gertz concocted a recipe to serve up joy to families in need.

After visiting a local food bank, the 16-year-old Agoura High School junior had a lightbulb moment that sparked her into action.

“I realized that while families often receive basic necessities, birthdays and celebrations are frequently overlooked,” shares Isabella. Inspired to make a difference, she reached out to local grocery stores and bakeries to request undecorated cakes that she could customize and donate to help others celebrate birthdays and special events.

With support from Gelson’s, Sprouts and Vons, Isabella teamed up with a group of friends to create unique and beautifully decorated cakes to bring smiles to others.

“We decorated a cake with an axolotl for a 5-year-old’s birthday and got a video of them receiving the cake. Their reaction was incredibly sweet and reminded me exactly why I do this," says Isabella, who founded a nonprofit called Bella’s Bakes to continue her mission.

“My goal is to expand to reach more communities in Southern California,” says Isabella. Advertising her services through flyers, word of mouth and on Instagram, Isabella works with Manna Conejo Valley Food Bank to deliver the decorated cakes to the lucky recipients.

Isabella’s love of culinary creations began at a young age in the kitchen with her mother.

“I started baking at 5 years old. My mentor that created my passion is my mom, who taught me how to bake when I was little,” explains Isabella, adding that the whole family got involved. “My dad and brother were forced to try my creations, too.”

Isabella studied at the Culinary Institute of America in New York and credits her Girl Scout instructors’ guidance and support with helping her grow and develop her skills. She is pursuing the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award with Bella’s Bakes and her Bake It Forward and Design with Dignity programs, where others can contribute to the cause by donating funds online at BellasBakes.org.

Isabella’s creations earned top honors at this year’s Los Angeles County Fair, where her Garden Cake took first place, Best of Class and Best of Division. She also took home an award for her inventive Girl Scout cookie creation. Using the new flavor, Explore Mores, she made a chocolate tart, using the cookie as a crust with mousse and fudge filling topped with marshmallow whipped cream.

The ambitious, accomplished teen balances her baking endeavors with schoolwork, the tennis team and extracurriculars, including the Animal Welfare Club and the Women in Medicine Club, as well as volunteering at Los Robles Hospital.

As her older brother prepares to attend Cornell University in the fall, Isabella contemplates her own college plans, noting she’s thinking of staying closer to home and continuing to brighten up lives with Bella’s Bakes. For the Conejo Valley community, that’s something to celebrate!

Pacifica High School’s John Beck

Honored as 2026 Ventura County Teacher of the Year

Pacifica High School English teacher John Beck learned that he was chosen as Teacher of the Year during a surprise visit to his classroom. Beck’s family members joined representatives from the Ventura County Office of Education and Oxnard Union High School District to congratulate him.

“We are incredibly proud to honor John Beck as the 2026 Ventura County Teacher of the Year,” said Ventura County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Cesar Morales. “He’s the kind of teacher that students remember for actively listening and providing support and guidance that inspires them to pursue their goals in high school and beyond.”

During his 21 years as an educator, Beck has remained steadfast in his commitment to ensure students feel supported and comfortable in the classroom.

“In a diverse community like ours, where students bring a wide range of experiences, languages and aspirations into the classroom, my goal is to create an environment where every student sees themselves as a capable reader, writer and thinker,” says Beck, who currently

teaches at Pacifica High School in Oxnard. As an English teacher and site Learning, Instruction and Technology (LIT) Coach, Beck heads an expansive program that includes a variety of English courses.

As Pacifica’s LIT Coach, Beck helps provide students with access to educational opportunities and is quick to lend a hand to fellow teachers.

“He supports teachers in creating lessons that give all students a way in, especially our English learners and students who have historically been underserved,” shares Pacifica High School Principal Chris Ramirez. “Because of his guidance, we are having real conversations about fairness, expectations and what it truly means to give every student a chance to succeed.”

We caught up with Beck to find out more about his passion for teaching.

“I want my students to understand that education is about far more than grades; it is about becoming thoughtful, curious and compassionate human beings.”

CVL: WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?

John Beck: I grew up in Ojai and spent most of my time outdoors, riding my bike, hiking and running.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A TEACHER?

I was lucky to have excellent teachers growing up, and I really enjoyed school as a student. I also came from a family of teachers. My father was a biology teacher turned principal, and his two brothers were also teachers, one who married another teacher. I also had a grandmother who was an elementary school teacher. In many ways, it felt like a family business.

WHERE WAS YOUR FIRST TEACHING JOB?

My first teaching job was at Santa Susana High School in Simi Valley. I was hired as an English teacher but soon became the ASB Director and Senior Project Advisor as well. I taught there for eight years.

DO YOU HAVE ANY MENTORS?

Besides my many family members who were teachers, my mentor teacher at Santa Susana High School, John Kohlmeier, was a significant influence on my style as a teacher. He is a great storyteller and was masterful at helping students find ways to tell their own stories. His love of literature was infectious, and he did an admirable job of getting students excited about reading. He was always generous with his time and taught from the heart.

WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR STUDENTS TO KNOW?

I want my students to understand that education is about far more than grades; it is about becoming thoughtful, curious and compassionate human beings. I hope they learn that mistakes and challenges are essential parts of growth and that perseverance matters more than perfection. Through literature, I want them to develop empathy, appreciate different perspectives and recognize their responsibility to contribute positively to the world around them. Above all, I want them to leave my classroom believing in their ability to learn and shape their own future through the choices they make.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT TEACHING?

What I like best about teaching is witnessing growth. There is something incredibly rewarding about watching students develop confidence, discover new ideas, overcome challenges and begin to see possibilities in themselves that they may not have recognized before. I enjoy the relationships that are built along the way and the

opportunity to help students find their voices, passions and purpose. I also love the creativity involved in the profession and that I have to continually learn and grow as an educator to meet the needs of my students.

WHAT IS CHALLENGING?

One of the greatest challenges of teaching is meeting the diverse academic, social and emotional needs of every student while helping each one succeed. It can also be difficult when growth is not immediately visible. However, seeing students develop confidence, skills and resilience with time makes these challenges worthwhile.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT USING AI IN THE CLASSROOM?

I believe AI can be a powerful tool in the classroom when used thoughtfully and responsibly. Like a calculator or search engine, AI can support learning by helping students brainstorm ideas, receive feedback, explore concepts and access information more efficiently. However, it should enhance learning rather than replace critical thinking, creativity or the learning process itself. Oftentimes, students want to take the easy way instead of putting in the work to truly educate themselves, so I have transformed the way I run my class and have gone back to many pen and paper assignments instead of completing all work on computers.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT IN THE CLASSROOM?

I love spending time outdoors: hiking, backpacking in the Sierras and running around my beautiful neighborhood. I enjoy traveling with my wife and two children (we are big fans of the national parks) and going to Dodger games. Finding some quiet time to read a book in my favorite chair is also a favorite of mine but doesn't happen too frequently with the busy pace of my life.

With this honor, Beck is now eligible to represent Ventura County in the 2026 California Teacher of the Year competition.

The Teacher of the Year program is administered by the Ventura County Office of Education. Candidates are nominated by their district, school or professional organization. A panel of educators selects the winner based on the candidate’s essay, experience and an introductory letter from their sponsor. DOG DAYS PROMOTE YOUTH LITERACY

Therapy dogs are becoming a welcome—and increasingly familiar— presence in educational spaces, offering comfort, confidence and a calm environment for students navigating academic pressures. One local volunteer is helping bring that sense of ease to children through a unique reading program that pairs young readers with attentive, nonjudgmental listeners.

A Calm Presence in a Busy World

Mindy Levine, a longtime resident of the Bridle Path community in Simi Valley, has spent the past 20 years as a certified therapy dog handler. For the past several years, she has volunteered at the Thousand Oaks Library, where she participates in the beloved “Dog Days” program, a weekly event that invites children to read aloud to therapy dogs.

Mindy works alongside her two Golden Retrievers, Jesse James and Annie Oakley, both certified therapy dogs through the nonprofit organization Love on a Leash. Founded in 1984, Love on a Leash is a national organization committed to providing volunteer pet therapy services that promote comfort, happiness and emotional support. The organization carefully evaluates both dogs and handlers to ensure they meet high standards of temperament, obedience and reliability, creating trusted teams that can safely interact with people of all ages.

Through its extensive network of volunteers, Love on a Leash facilitates visits to hospitals, schools, libraries, rehabilitation centers and senior living communities. These visits are designed to enhance emotional well-being, reduce stress and foster meaningful human-animal connections. Handlers like Mindy donate their time and

energy, often forming lasting bonds with the communities they serve. For many participants, these therapy visits become something to look forward to—a consistent source of comfort and joy in environments that can otherwise feel overwhelming.

How Dog Days Works

Each Tuesday afternoon, anticipation builds well before the program begins. Children begin lining up prior to 3:30 p.m. to secure a spot. After signing in, they receive a name tag and eagerly await their turn to choose which dog they will read to. Each child is given approximately 10 minutes with their selected canine companion. For many, that time becomes the highlight of their week. If a child wishes to read to another dog, the process is simple—they step out, sign up again and rejoin the line. including Golden Retrievers, Labradors, a Bernadoodle and even Lulu, a striking standard Poodle who has become a favorite among returning readers.

“Dogs have a special sense of understanding and empathy,” Mindy explains. “The reader has the undivided attention of an outstanding listener.”

That unconditional attention can make a significant difference, especially for children who may feel self-conscious about reading aloud in a classroom setting. In contrast, therapy dogs offer gentle companionship, often responding with a wagging tail, a nuzzle or even an affectionate lick—small gestures that help put young readers at ease.

The result is more than just improved reading skills. Programs like Dog Days help foster confidence, build positive associations with literacy and create a safe space where children feel supported. Many participants return week after week, forming bonds not only with the dogs but with the experience itself.

A Rewarding Experience for All

Mindy has seen firsthand how transformative these moments can be. As a volunteer, she describes the program as deeply rewarding—for the children, the dogs and the handlers alike.

“To watch the kids engage with the pups, laugh, giggle and enjoy literature is so rewarding,” she says.

For Mindy, the experience is also personal.

“It feeds my teacher soul,” she shares, reflecting on the joy she finds in helping children grow more comfortable and confident as readers.

Summer is here, and that means kids are out and about doing kid things, like running, swimming, playing, screaming and making loud noises. So, what does this have to do with dogs?

It’s easy to overlook how these activities may affect the family dog or other dogs around us. Dogs can view kids’ rambunctious behavior as prey-like and over stimulating, as it simulates prey behavior, which dogs may be interested in. As dogs can’t talk, it is important to know how to interpret what they are doing to ensure a safe environment and avoid unwanted scenarios. Here are a few safety tips to think about.

Running

Running is a common activity. We run in games and while playing outside. These fast movements can be exciting for dogs and may trigger a dog’s prey drive to chase, follow and possibly grab. This is a dog’s instinctive response to fast movement. So, what is the safest way to handle this?

The best solution when running and chaotic play is happening is to put the dog in a safe place, like a crate or a designated room or area. Avoiding unnecessary stressful situations will keep everyone safe and comfortable. Another option is to keep the dog on a leash or doing obedience training to redirect the behavior. This breaks the dog’s thought process and channels its focus in another direction.

Swimming

Swimming is another common summer activity that can be overly exciting to a dog. The fast movement, much like running, can trigger prey drive. Jumping and diving in can also simulate prey drive and retrieval instincts in a dog, causing them to possibly jump in after anyone jumping in the pool. The splashing also looks chaotic

and crazy to a dog, which attracts them to it and causes stress; we often see dogs circling the pool and barking. It can be overwhelming. Dogs need structure, so again, the best bet is to have the dog away in a safe space so children can play and swim without risk.

Games & Activities

So many fun activities take place during the summertime, such as jumping on a trampoline, playing with toys and engaging in outdoor adventures. Again, an activity like jumping on a trampoline can also start up a dog’s prey drive. To make sure we are all safe during these adventures, having a safe place for the dog to be or putting the dog in a structured position such as a “place” or “down stay” on leash could also work if the dog is calm enough.

Dogs Laying Down

Let sleeping dogs lie! Respect resting dogs. If you see a dog resting, laying or sleeping, it is important for children not to disturb them. We do not want to interrupt their sleep or startle them. This could scare them and create an unwanted reaction. If a dog is laying down, we should do our best not to disturb them with quick movements over or near them. This will keep everyone calm and safe.

Being aware of these behaviors will help you anticipate a dog’s response and safely prevent any unwanted reactions. By teaching children to recognize and respect a dog’s needs, families can create safer interactions and help build trust, confidence and lasting friendships between kids and dogs.

OPERATION Blankets of LOVE

Teaching Kindness Through the Humane Education Learning Program

Eighteen years ago, Eileen Smulson visited a local animal shelter on a cold, rainy day and witnessed something that would change her life: puppies shivering on hard cement floors with no blankets to comfort them.

“In about one month, I collected a few hundred items. And I thought, ‘wow this is my calling,’ and I made it into a nonprofit,” says Eileen, founder and CEO of Operation Blankets of Love (OBOL).

What began with collecting 800 blankets has grown into a nationally recognized nonprofit, earning 51 awards for its life-saving work in animal welfare and emergency relief. Each month, OBOL supports over 50 animal rescue organizations, helping around 4,000 homeless dogs and cats receive food and essential supplies so they can become healthier and more adoptable.

“We want to keep people and their pets together,” says Eileen. “No one should have to give up their beloved companion because they can’t afford food or supplies.”

To support this mission, OBOL also assists homeless individuals, veterans, seniors and struggling families with pets—groups that often lack funding for animal care. Donations include pet food, blankets, toys, leashes, collars, crates, grooming and medical supplies. These are distributed across California, Baja Mexico, Southeast Asia, China and the Caribbean.

But OBOL’s mission goes beyond donations. A key focus is preventing animal abuse through education, particularly through its Humane Education Learning Program (HELP).

Empowering Future Animal Advocates

Eileen recognized a gap in humane education programs in

Southern California, despite California’s requirement to teach kindness toward animals and humane treatment of living creatures.

Since 2008, HELP has educated over 14,000 children with the help of animal ambassadors, her adopted dogs who bring lessons to life. The first was Ginger, a terrier-poodle mix who helped teach 10,000 children. Today, Molly Joon, a 6-year-old spaniel mix, continues that work. Rescued from Tijuana after being found flea-infested and starving, Molly now plays a central role in the program.

Molly’s impact has been recognized by the Association of Professional Humane Educators. Alongside Eileen, she visits classrooms and youth groups, helping students understand empathy, kindness and responsible pet care. Through storytelling and demonstrations, students learn how to care for animals and why compassion matters.

The program offers fun and educational interactive lessons for children from preschool through 12th grade, serving schools and youth organizations such as Girl Scouts and Boys and Girls Clubs across Ventura, Los Angeles and Orange counties.

“Our mission is to help children develop a deep connection to animals,” says Eileen. “By teaching empathy, compassion and responsible pet ownership, we aim to prevent animal abuse and neglect while promoting respect for all living beings.”

Breaking the Cycle of Violence

HELP’s curriculum covers topics including respect for animals, responsible pet care, dog safety, why animals end up in shelters, spaying and neutering and the human-animal bond. It also

addresses what constitutes animal cruelty and connects these lessons to broader issues like bullying.

The importance of this education is significant.

“Animal abuse has been shown to be directly linked to bullying and domestic violence,” Eileen explains. “Childhood cruelty toward animals can lead to violence against humans. Educating children early can help break this cycle.”

Kids In Action

The program encourages students to turn compassion into action. Participants organize drives to collect blankets and comfort items for shelter animals, directly contributing to their well-being and increasing their chances of adoption.

“Children see the impact of their contributions and how they can help homeless animals,” says Eileen.

Each child also receives a free copy of Eileen’s 60-page bilingual (English/Spanish) coloring and activity booklet, “How to Care for Our Pet Pals,” reinforcing lessons learned in the classroom.

The Need Never Stops

“Shelters don’t have a budget for basic comfort items like blankets or towels,” Eileen says. “Many rescue groups depend on us for food and critical supplies. That’s where we come in.”

To date, OBOL has donated to 124 shelters, more than 1,160 rescues, 158 homeless organizations and 20 pet pantries.

CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF COMPASSION AND COMMUNITY

Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara marked its 35th anniversary with an evening of gratitude, reflection and celebration at the Westlake Yacht Club. The milestone gathering honored the donors, volunteers board members, staff and founding members whose dedication has sustained the organization’s mission for more than three decades: ensuring that no one faces cancer alone. Throughout the evening, guests shared moving stories about the comfort, connection and guidance they found through the organization’s free support groups, educational resources and wellness programs. The celebration also paid tribute to founders Beth HillKin and Marty Nason, whose grassroots fundraising campaign in 1988 raised $200,000 and helped open the nonprofit’s doors in June 1991. A heartfelt toast from longtime donor and Board Member Lisa Allison closed the night, capturing both the resilience of those served and the generosity of the community that continues to carry the mission forward.

Annual Dinner Auction Gala Raises More Than $2M

Coming together at the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village in April, the Oaks Christian community raised more than $2 million in support of the school’s mission at its annual Dinner Auction Gala.

Inspired by the generosity of Oaks Christian founder Dallas Price-Van

Breda’s surprise matching gift challenge—pledging to match up to $1 million raised through auctions, direct donations and the Moment to Give campaign—the school community rose to the challenge, helping to achieve the fundraising milestone.

Emceed by Oaks Christian parent Neal McDonough, whose warmth and humor energized the evening, the program included performances by Grammy Award-winning producer David Foster and singer-songwriter Katharine McPhee, as well as vocalist Daniel Emmet, who earned a standing ovation with his powerful performance.

The live auction featured 10 exclusive items, including a rare 1927 World Series Yankees baseball signed by Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and other “Murderers’ Row” players, which sold for $24,000; an Australian Labradoodle puppy ($15,000); a luxury resort getaway ($44,000); and a unique Navy SEAL experience with a retired commander ($40,000).

Alumni also shared inspiring stories that reflected Oaks Christian’s commitment to academic excellence,

artistic expression and athletic achievement. Olympians Amanda Longan (Class of 2015), Adrian Weinberg (Class of 2019) and Morgan Stickney (Class of 2016) spoke about how their Oaks Christian experience helped shape their journeys to the world stage.

Alumna Emily Ricks Hahn (Class of 2019) moved the audience by sharing that knowledge gained in her science classes enabled her to recognize a life-threatening medical condition, ultimately changing the course of her life and future aspirations.

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

There’s something about that fresh start.

Store shelves are filled with backpacks and school supplies, calendars begin filling up and families everywhere start preparing for a new season of routines, responsibilities and opportunities. Whether your children are heading to kindergarten, high school or college or you’re watching grandchildren begin another year, back-to-school season has a way of reminding us just how quickly time passes.

As a mom and nana, I find myself reflecting on that every year. It seems like yesterday I was helping my own children prepare for a new school year. Now I’m watching my grandchildren create memories of their own. The days may feel long at times, but the years truly do fly by.

And while we often focus on helping our children adjust to new schedules, there are other family members experiencing the change as well, our pets.

If you’re anything like me, your pets are part of the family. During the summer months, they get used to having everyone around. They enjoy the extra attention, the backyard playtime, the family vacations and the daily activity. Then suddenly, the house becomes much quieter.

You may notice your dog waiting by the door, following you from room to room or looking for the kids who were just home every day. Our pets thrive on routine just as much as we do. A daily walk, playtime, a favorite toy or simply a few extra minutes of attention can help them adjust to the transition.

Back-to-school season also gives all of us a chance to reset. It’s an opportunity to create healthier habits, establish new routines and focus on what matters most. Family dinners, meaningful conversations, morning walks and quality time with those we love often become the moments we remember long after the school year ends.

Whether your home is filled with school backpacks, pet toys, grandchildren or simply cherished memories, this season offers all of us a chance to begin again.

As we move into this new chapter, remember that success isn’t measured only by report cards, accomplishments or busy schedules. It’s found in the everyday moments, the morning hugs, the afterschool stories, the wagging tails at the front door and the love trails left behind by those who share our homes and our hearts. I like my house in order, and I have to remind myself that those are love trails and they won’t be there forever.
