A R E
As a Charlottesville-area resident since the late 1960s, I’m often asked about the “changes.” Mostly this comes from people worried we are overbuilding roads, houses and stores, and diluting the small-town character that brought us or kept us here. My answer is that Charlottesville is better than ever—the mix of old and new (an award-winning winery in the county, a modern architect on the Downtown Mall) makes for a fascinating and engaging small town. In the following pages, you will see ads from all manner of businesses, from Service Dogs of Virginia to Derriere de Soie to MarieBette Cafe. By joining our “We are C-VILLE” campaign, these advertisers are reaching out to our readers and underwriting our work as a community newspaper in a community that needs one. Love them back to find out how rich life in C’ville can be. BILL CHAPMAN, FOUNDING EDITOR

CENTRAL LIBRARY: A HISTORY The first known library in downtown Charlottesville was created in 1823 by a group of citizens that included Thomas Jefferson. The “Albemarle Library Society” boasted an initial collection of 238 titles. It was not until 1919 and the generosity of Paul Goodloe McIntire that a truly public library was formed. The cornerstone was laid in November 1919, and the new “Charlottesville Public Library” opened its doors to the public on May 30, 1921. In October 1977, the Market Street Post Office building was purchased by Charlottesville and Albemarle County and a 17-month renovation project took place. After moving the McIntire collection of 90,000 volumes into the building on Market Street, the new Central Library opened on February 2, 1981 to patrons eager for a larger facility. The upstairs of the library building had originally been a courtroom. Among other important legal battles at the building was the 1950 hearing where Gregory Swanson and his legal team, including future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, won Mr. Swanson's admission as the first African American to attend UVA.

Angelo is owned and operated by the renowned jewelry artist, Lee Angelo Marraccini and his wife & store director, Pam Perugi Marraccini. Inspired by the friendships developed with numerous jewelry artists over 40 some years of craft and jewelry shows across the country, Lee conceived and designed the jewelry gallery in 1999. The store’s name is in honor of Lee’s father, Angelo Marraccini, of “Angelo’s Bar and Restaurant” in Monongahela, Pa. We pride ourselves in offering a range of jewelry from higher end special occasion pieces, that can be dressed up or down, to just simply fun every day pieces, of which all are hand made in America. We highlight several jewelry makers from Charlottesville as well. There is something for almost everyone! And many of our customers report to us that their loved ones would be happy with “Anything from Angelo!” We love to share the beauty of hand made with our customers and we have developed a very loyal clientele who appreciate that each piece they bring home with them has been designed and constructed by someone who cares and who puts their energy and love into their work. Sometimes you just want a steak. STARTED
by George Spathos who arrived to the United States from Greece at age eighteen, the Aberdeen Barn has been a family owned and operated business since 1965. George began his restaurant career with a small breakfast place on Main St. in the 1950’s where he worked to fulfill his dream of opening a big time steakhouse, one similar to those he had seen in New York City upon arriving to this country. The Aberdeen Barn is just that – a ‘big time steakhouse’ – a true upscale dining establishment run to the highest standard. Familiar yet innovative, traditional yet forward-thinking, these are all attributes unique to the Aberdeen Barn experience. Dinner at “the Barn” has become as central to the Charlottesville experience as tailgating at Scott Stadium before the big game. Today, you’ll find George’s son and daughter, Terry and Angela, running the show, working to achieve that fine balance between honoring their father’s dream while providing the type of upscale experience today’s fine dining customer requires. Head Chef Robert Johnson and Assistant Chef, Curtis Burton combine for 70 years of service. Together with a seasoned wait staff, they work as a family to maintain the tradition of quality that defines this class institution and proudly bring it into the future.

Buying and selling homes while living in five states exposed me to several different real estate environments, which help me in the diverse Charlottesville area markets. I understand the stress of moving into a new town, not knowing the area at all, and needing to find a home. I also know the process of buying and selling is still stressful even if you have lived here your whole life. My job is to make sure the process is as smooth and comfortable as possible.

From pushcarts to modern transportation, Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Central Virginia (PCVA) has withstood the test of time. As the holder of the oldest, written, and recorded Pepsi-Cola franchise, PCVA remains family owned and operated over 100 years after its birth in a basement on the corner of 4th and Water Street in downtown Charlottesville. Following the death of the company’s founder, Samuel Ambrose Jessup, or “Mr. S.A.”, in 1960, his youngest son, Jimmie Jessup became President of the company. Jimmie introduced many changes to PCVA, including a move in November, 1963 to a location on Millmont Street. PCVA eventually outgrew this location and in 1983 the current production and sales facility was constructed and occupied. Jimmie remained president of the company until his passing in February, 1984. After their father's death in 1984, Jay Jessup (President) and Suzanne Jessup Brooks (Executive Vice President), became the 3rd generation of bottlers at the helm of PCVA. PCVA has enjoyed over 107 years in the Charlottesville community and looks forward to many more! I opened Hot Yoga Charlottesville in downtown Charlottesville on January 27, 2004. Yoga started off, for me, as a means of cross training an active athletic lifestyle. While the physical benefits are still a driving force in my practice, yoga’s ability to increase focus and reduce stress are equally as important.

ervice Dogs of Virginia has been helping people with disabilities in a unique, empowering way since 2000. Whether a person has a spinal cord injury that changes them from a fully functioning individual to a quadriplegic in the blink of an eye, to a parent who receives a diagnosis of autism for their child, to a member of the military with a diagnosis of PTSD, or a Type1 Diabetic who has lost all recognition of low blood sugar, life has taken a severe and irreversible turn. Service Dogs of Virginia provides a specially trained companion who helps their person live with greater independence, security, and peace of mind. We have never charged a fee for our dogs, relying instead on the generosity of individuals, businesses, and philanthropic organizations to help us underwrite the cost of each dog. Most of our clients have considerable disability expenses and no government funding or insurance pays for a service dog. Our dogs undergo two years of training, beginning at eight weeks of age. At placement, they have had 700 hours of training, been to 50 different places, and learned over 30 advanced commands. They work for no pay except a little kibble and a lot of love. They are steady, reliable, and joyous.

IT’S BEEN ALMOST 30 YEARS Guadalajara was established in October of 1988 by the Arellano Ornelas Lopez family, as the first Mexican restaurant in the Charlottesville area. Our goal was to have a future in Charlottesville, and provide for our family. In the beginning an extraordinary amount of work was required. We had no friends or family in the area, and running a restaurant was a totally new experience. Despite the difficulties of simultaneously opening and new business and raising a family, we continued to focus on perfecting our recipes, and improving our business. 28 years later, our sons have grown up and are now running our four locations, along with family friends, throughout Charlottesville. Guadalajara offers a large variety of Mexican food to give our customers a little taste of everything. Family owned and locally operated, we proudly make everything in house. Nothing comes pre-packaged or pre-made. All of our salsas are made from scratch, and our meats are sliced and cooked in house. Come see why we are still Charlottesville’s favorite Mexican Restaurant after 28 years. Thank you to our loyal customers for all of your support!

Introducing C-BIZ, C-VILLE’s quarterly business magazine for working folk—from the ground floor to the corner office. Each issue, we’ll take national conversations and zoom in to see how they’re playing out locally. You’ll meet the city’s movers and shakers and hear what they have to say about running a business in Charlottesville, Albemarle and, in some cases, beyond. No one is off limits. It’s all of our business.
