It’s the most wonderful time of the year! What are you thankful for this holiday season? We can think of a few things. Because C’ville is such a caring community, we’re thankful to have so many compassionate local nonprofits to which we can donate during this season of giving back. We’ve listed a few (although there are so many more!) that you can contribute to this year. And because it’s the time of year to give rather than receive, we’ve highlighted several places to shop for the perfect holiday gift AND where you can feel the spirit of the season, from The Shops at Stonefield to Barracks Road Shopping Center. Even though the temps are dropping, snow is imminent, and it’s tempting to stay inside by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate, now is one of the best times of the year to get out, explore, and enjoy the holiday décor. Check out our story on where to day-trip for the holidays and experience some of the great little small towns around C’ville, from Gordonsville to Culpeper. Do you make Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner from-scratch? Some of us do… and some of us don’t. No judgement if you are the latter. In that case, we’ve got several recommendations on where to turn if you need help providing your holiday dinner spread this year for friends or family. And if you are heading to a holiday party, we’ve also got loads of ideas on gifts to give the host or hostess, as well as where to shop for your most festive, holly-jolly wardrobe.
Happy holidays, C’ville!

HOLIDAYS 2019 I 5
Get Your Shop On
Do you like to shop around for the holidays, bouncing from one shopping center to the next? Or do you prefer to knock your holiday gift list out in one fell swoop by visiting only one shopping district? Charlottesville’s vibrant shopping scene has you covered either way for the holidays. We know that the downtown mall is one of the best places for all of our holiday shopping wants and needs, but there are plenty of places outside city center to get our shop on this Christmas, too.
Barracks Road Shopping Center
The Shops at Stonefield
Fashion Square Mall
1117 Emmet St. N
2100 Hydraulic Rd.
1600 Rio Rd. E.
There may be no reason to shop anywhere else after a visit to Barracks Road, home to dozens of locally-driven boutiques like Scarpa, Folly Home Furnishing, Albemarle Angler, Rebecca’s Natural Food, and Oliva, along with such national retailers as Anthropologie, Lilly Pulitzer, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and Yankee Candle. Make sure you pop into The Virginia Shop for Cavaliercentric stocking stuffers, The Happy Cook for the top brands in kitchen and cookingware, and Great Outdoor Provision Co. for gifts for lovers of the outdoors.
Since The Shops at Stonefield opened in 2012 on the corner of Hydraulic Road and Seminole Trail, it has become one of C’ville’s top shopping destinations. And Stonefield is where serious holiday shoppers want to spend the season gifthunting among an eclectic mix of shops like BlueMercury, Kendra Scott, Mincer’s, Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, Whimsies Kids, Chocolatesville, and the just opened Sephora. Stonefield will no doubt be decked out in festive lights and holiday decor this year, which always makes gift shopping that much better.
Show some love to Fashion Square Mall this holiday season, where you likely spent many a day in your youth during the 80s and 90s living the indoor mall rat life. Fashion Square has Victoria’s Secret, J. Crew Factory (yes to discounted J. Crew!), Bath & Body Works, Spencer’s Gifts, Eddie Bauer, Build-a-Bear Workshop, Kay Jewelers, and many others, including anchors Belk and JC Penny, where you are sure to find just the right present to put under the tree.

Holiday Shopping Outside City Center
By Jennifer Pullinger
Seminole Square Shopping Center
5th Street Station
200 Zan Rd.
The newest shopping district on the block, 5th Street Station is anchored by Wegmans, Field & Stream, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. While one might not think of Wegmans as a source of prime holiday shopping, don’t forget the grocery chain has an aisle dedicated to homewares and home entertaining, if you are looking for a last-minute gift. It’s also a great place to find stocking stuffers and hostess gifts, like organic beauty products and craft beer and wine. Pop into PetSmart to find holiday treats for the pet in your life, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa for a gift card for that friend who needs some pampering, and of course Field & Stream and Dick’s for presents for the sporting enthusiast on your list.
Blink and you might miss it – but you won’t want to. Add Seminole Square Shopping Center to your must-visit list, and make sure you stop into The Crystal Connection, where you’ll find a wide selection of jewelry as well as healing energy-infused crystals, gems, stones, and rock clusters (in amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, and so many more) that will raise your gift-ee’s holiday vibration. You’ll also find a mix of unique local shops and retail chains that include Andrew Minton Jewelers, Edible Arrangements, Laughing Sheep Yarns, Tobacconist & Gifts, Marshalls, The Party Starts Here, and Plan 9 Music that should knock out a few hard-tofind items on your holiday shopping list.
5th St. Station Pkwy.
Pantops Shopping Center 250 Free Bridge Ln. You also might not think of Pantops as a locale for holiday gift-shopping, but that’s just where you need to get creative. You know the libations will be flowing during the holidays, so add the Virginia ABC store to your must visit list, think “shop local,” and pick up some Virginia wine and spirits. You know you have a brother or uncle who is into fixing up their truck, so hit up Advance Auto Parts for a gift card, or treat a gift-ee on your list to some bacon cheese fries, mac & cheese bites, a platter of wings, and brews at everybody’s favorite hang out spot, the Lazy Parrot.

Top Five C’ville-centric Holiday Party Hostess Gift Ideas
By Jennifer Pullinger
1
Castle Hill Cider:
Crisp orchard cider is quaffable yearround, but might just taste and go down even better during the holidays. Grab a hostess-friendly four-pack of the Big Pippin series of canned ciders – All Hopped Up, Elder Cherry Rosé, Prickly Pear & Orange Blossom, or Ginger – at the Keswick-based cidery and tasting room. Also available in local stores, including Beer Run, Market Street Market, and Greenwood Gourmet.
2
Roxie Daisy:
Located on the downtown mall, Roxie Daisy is a gift-giver’s dream – you’re not walking out without procuring the perfect hostess gift. This shop is a celebration of the Southern home – pick up a cozy Turkish towel (your hostess can wear it as a shawl or use as a picnic blanket), a set of dainty glassware, some stylish dish towels, or locally-made treats (like La Vache Microcreamery caramels), any of which could come in handy the night of the party.
3
Caspari:
The downtown mall is a hotspot for hostess gifts – and Caspari, on the west end, is a veritable wonderland of home accessory presents. Gift the party hostess in your life with some instantly-useable cocktail napkins or coasters (we like the flamingo or gold turkey patterns). Or, opt for a jar of Cloister Honey, a bottle of Monticello Bloody Mary Mix, or an ever-popular seasonal Thymes Frasier Fir candle. Caspari also has a wide collection of coffeetable-worthy home, garden, and design books and cookbooks suited to the personality or interests of just about any host or hostess. 14 I HOLIDAYS 2019
‘Tis the season, and holiday party invites abound. And ‘tis customary to express gratitude to your holiday party host or hostess for their hospitality by bringing a gift of thanks, right? This kind of gesture doesn’t have to be expensive or over the top, but it should be thoughtful. So go ahead, show how much you appreciate all of the work the host or hostess did in prep for holiday merriment — here are our top gift idea picks, sourced from shops around Charlottesville.
4
Chocolatesville:
Head out to the Shops at Stonefield for Chocolatesville, makers of irresistible craft Belgian chocolate goodies. From bark, fruits, nuts, and fudge, to truffles, popcorn, cookies, and dipped treats, if your party-throwing pal loves chocolate, this is the place to snag a hostess gift. Think chocolate-dipped orange slices, mint shard or oreo bark, peanut butter cups, and so much more.
5
Linden Lane Interiors:
Peruse home furnishings and interior design shop Linden Lane for a curated collection of unique giftware perfect for any hostess, like decorative vases and pottery, room sprays, ceramic floral diffusers, marble coasters, holiday ornaments, barware, picture frames, book ends, and design and equestrian-themed books. Do you really want to express your thanks? Bestow your hostess with a coveted Antica Farmacista candle or a beautiful, creatureinspired, bejeweled decorative box (to place on a coffee table or bookshelf), which you can also find in their charming West Main Street shop.

Lewis St., sunspots.com) Or, sign up for Paris Cake Company’s annual Gingerbread Workshop happening December 8, where you can decorate your own (pre-built) Gingerbread Manor House with candy and icing. (300 Church St., pariscakeco.com)
SEE: The Historic Staunton Foundation’s Annual Holiday House Tour is a seasonal event that’s not to be missed. On Saturday, December 7 (5-8PM) and Sunday, December 8 (15PM), get a peep inside some of Staunton’s most beautifully restored historic homes. This year’s tour features homes along the southern hillside of the Gospel Hill Historic District. (historicstaunton.org)
20 I HOLIDAYS 2019
FLUVANNA DO:
On their blog, they say: “In the next three months we will make more candy than the rest of the year combined.” That’s why a visit to the Red Rocker Candy store in Troy is a must-do. (And it’s a must-do NOW, because according to their blog, they will permanently close their factory store on December 23 so they can expand their production facility.) The peppermint blast pretzel mix alone belongs in every home’s holiday candy bowl. (redrockercandy.com).
SEE: Plan a visit to Thistle Gate Vineyard, located five miles from Scottsville. On November 29 and 30, shop artisanand craft-made goods at the vineyard’s Thistle Market, and on December 14, enjoy mulled wine and a meet-and-greet with Santa at their Christmas Open House. (thistlegatevineyard.com) On December 15, take in a performance of “Frozen Jr.” the musical at the Carysbrook Performing Arts Center, featuring the Young Empowered Players. Bonus: Price is only $5 at the door. (carysbrook.org).
CULPEPER DO:
Do some advance shaping-up, so you can indulge in all the holiday treats later, by signing up for the Jingle Bell Trot 5K, happening on December 14 at Yowell Meadow Park and hosted by CrossFit Culpeper. (crossfitculpeper.com) Another opportunity to hang with ol’ Kris Kringle (and sip on some wine) happens December 15 at Gray Ghost Vineyards in nearby Amissville (grayghostvineyards.com).
SEE: On December 8, grab the kids and head downtown to Main Street for the Culpeper Christmas Parade, sponsored by Sheriff Scott Jenkins. This quintessentially family-friendly holiday event provides opportunities to feel the spirit of the season, with Christmas lights, music, nativity scenes, holiday-themed floats, and – drum roll – Santa! (culpepersheriffsoffice.com/christmas-parade)
GORDONSVILLE DO: Shopkeepers along Main Street (Route 15) typically deck
their doorways with gorgeously festive décor during Thanksgiving and Christmas so a walk along the brick-paved sidewalk, to do some window-shopping, should be on your Gordonsville short list. If you work up a hunger, stop at Krecek Kakes (105 S. Main Street), a European-inspired from-scratch bakery and coffee shop, where you’ll be sure to find special holiday confections and treats to nosh on.
SEE: In honor of loved ones who have passed, attend the annual Memorial Christmas Tree Lighting on the front lawn of Gordonsville Town Hall on December 1. On December 21, don’t miss “Ugly Holiday Sweater Day” at Horton Vineyards (6399 Spotswood Trail). Simply sport your fave ugly holiday sweater to receive a complimentary tasting.
WAYNESBORO
DO: Have you ever wanted to make your own Christmas wreath? Now’s your chance! Faded Poppy – whimsical and boho floral arrangement creators – is hosting a Christmas wreath-making workshop at Stable Craft Brewing on December 1. (thefadedpoppy. com)
SEE: November 30 to December 1, catch the musical version of everyone’s favorite holiday flick, “Elf,” with “Elf Jr.: The Musical” at the Wayne Theatre. (waynetheatre.org) And mark your calendar for another jolly hometown parade, the 2019 Waynesboro Christmas Parade on December 7. Visitors and participants are asked to bring a toy to donate to the Toy Convoy, which benefits area children in need.

The Gift That Truly Gives LOCAL NONPROFITS TO SUPPORT DURING THE HOLIDAYS BY JENNIFER PULLINGER
The holidays are the season of giving — the season that inspires a sense of charity and selflessness and a desire to spread a little hope and cheer. This year, consider donating to one of the following C’ville-area nonprofits or charitable organizations to help locals in need experience a brighter, more joyful holiday.
Ronald McDonald House Charities:
CharlottesvilleAlbemarle SPCA:
Like many Ronald McDonald House Charities, the local house – located a few blocks from the University of Virginia Medical Center – helps families with sick or injured children stay together by providing a temporary, home-like environment in addition to other support, resources, and comfort offerings. The local Ronald McDonald House hosts up to 1,000 family stays annually, 365 days per year, so the need is there.
Providing compassionate care and safe, loving homes to lost, abandoned, or homeless animals is the local SPCA’s mission, and if you’re a dog or cat lover, the holidays are a great time to break open your wallet and help a pet in need. The local SPCA supports a variety of ways to donate, from an Amazon Wish List to “In Honor of” memorial gifts.

DONATE: caspca.org
Charlottesville Climate Collaborative: The Charlottesville Climate Collaborative, located across from Court Square Park, helps the local population discover effective (sometimes easy, sometimes long-range) solutions designed to lessen one’s carbon footprint and create a healthier community. DONATE: cvilleclimate.org
Meals on Wheels of Charlottesville /Albemarle: “Neighbors helping neighbors, one meal at a time” – the motto of Meals on Wheels – succinctly captures what the organization is all about. A donation this time of year will help ensure hot, nutritious meals get delivered to neighbors who are homebound and unable to secure or prepare a meal on their own. DONATE: cvillemeals.org
The Bridge Line: A brain injury can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime. 5,455 adults in the Thomas Jefferson Health District alone are now living with disabilities due to traumatic brain injury, according to The Bridge Line, an IX Building-based nonprofit that helps adults with brain injuries regain a level of independence and live life to its fullest. DONATE: thebridgeline.org
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville: According to Dan Rosensweig, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville, the local HFH has “built and sold more than 200 homes to hard-working, low-income families in the area and preserved housing for more than 2,000 community members through neighborhood stabilization and revitalization”. Dinner To-Go
Where to Grab Your Pre-Made Holiday Meals By Jennifer Pullinger
There is nothing like a home-cooked meal for the holidays. But sometimes, you’ve got to give yourself a break and just get that holiday dinner to-go. If you want to skip out on making your holiday dinner from-scratch this year, go ahead and forgive yourself now, then call up the following Charlottesville-area markets and catering operations for all of your tastes-justlike-homemade-but-it’s-really-pre-prepared holiday fare.
FOODS OF ALL NATIONS Any time of the year, you can find preparedmeals-to-go at Foods of All Nations – pasta dishes galore, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, fried chicken, grilled beef tenderloin, and lots more perfect-for-the-holidays dishes. And have you seen their bakery case?!? Toss a couple of bottles of Virginia wine into your cart, and you’re all set. Note: Foods of all Nations also offers preplanned Thanksgiving and Christmas menus; visit their website for the latest. (foodsofallnations.com)
HOTCAKES

Located in the Barracks Road Shopping Center, Hotcakes is a gourmet prepared foods, café, and bakery. In a world of fast-casual dining, Hotcakes is a Charlottesville original. So what sort of to-go items might you expect? Think tarragon chicken salad, sesame noodles, salmon sliders, and other yummy made-in-house dishes that will do just nicely for the holidays. (Who says meals this time of year have to be the typical baked ham or sweet potato casserole?) Or visit their website for their Thanksgiving and Christmas gourmet-to-go menus featuring seasonal entrées, sides, breads, and desserts that taste just like grandma would make. (hotcakes.biz) 36 I HOLIDAYS 2019
MOE’S ORIGINAL BBQ We ask once again – does a Thanksgiving or Christmas meal have to be traditional? A resounding and emphatic “NO.” If you have an affinity for barbeque, then barbeque is what you shall have for the holidays. Moe’s Original BBQ — with two locations in C’ville — can hook your holidays up. Moe’s has “family pack”-size menu options, like it’s “Triple Wide Family Pack” (serves 5-6 people), which comes with 1.5 pounds of your choice of meat – pork,

turkey, or chicken – and three side pints. Add a southern fried catfish or smoked chicken wings platter to the mix, and you’ll have all of the barbeque to satiate you through the holidays. (moesoriginalbbq.com)
DINNER AT HOME CATERING
what Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner is – a joyous party for family and friends? So order up. The “Party Starter Platter,” for example, comes with a variety of Feast’s most popular starters, including antipasto skewers, Virginia ham biscuits, smoked trout on rye, and pimento and chicken salad sandwiches, which serves 15 of your favorite peeps. (feastvirginia.com)
Ham rolls, citrus-thyme roasted chicken, mashed sweet potatoes, and apple cake – just a few of the scrumptious items you find on DaH’s 2019 holiday menu. Whether you have 10 people or lots more to feed in your family, think of Dinner at Home – owned and operated by Ashley and Carter East – as your holiday dinner savior. Delivery available or pickup at their downtown kitchen. (dahcatering.com)
FEAST! From prosciutto deviled eggs, white bean salad, and crudité platters, to shrimp cocktail, locally cured pork tenderloin, and antipasto, Feast! (located on West Main Street) has got your snackable holiday catering needs covered. While at first glance, the catering menu looks to be designed for parties, isn’t that

Step Out in Style WHERE TO SOURCE YOUR MOST FESTIVE HOLIDAY FASHIONS IN C’VILLE Hygge – it’s the Danish word that describes life’s simple pleasures, but also, all things cozy. (It’s still a thing, y’all.) Fall and winter is the time of year when we crave hygge. Fortunately, sweater weather – the very sartorial representation of hygge – can see us through the chilly season.
And also fortunately for us, chunky, over-sized knitwear is IN. Step into any local apparel shop, and you’ll find sweaters on sweaters on sweaters. So prepare to factor this seasonal favorite into your holiday style, whether you pair it with a silver or gold metallic skirt or a pair of trendy jeans and heels, all of which you can find right here in C’ville’s most fashionable boutiques.
Hygge – it’s the Danish word that describes life’s simple pleasures, but also, all things cozy.
The Impeccable Pig 321 E. Main St.
Inside The Impeccable Pig you’ll find loads of ultra-cozy sweaters to wear. Make it a complete party season-ready outfit with a new pair of designer jeans (Flying Monkey, Just Black Denim and Vervet are among the brands carried), a stylish new bag, and a pair of eye-catching tassel earrings. Need to dress it up? Consider the boutique’s collection of maxi dresses, sweater dresses, and tunic-style frocks that are casual enough for day but can easily transition to night.

Here, vibrant colors in plums and fuchsias perfect for the holidays call out your name as soon as you step inside.
