‘Evaluating joint space width and hip morphology in symptomatic female hips and femoroacetabular impingement and instability’ in the Journal of Hip Preservation Surgery | Brianna N Rowe, Lauren M Heylmun, Antionette M Pino, Carson L Keeter, Michael B Ellman MD, James W Genuario MD

Key Takeaways

This study analyzed 493 symptomatic female hips to compare joint space width (JSW) in femoroacetabular syndrome (FAIS) and hip instability, while also examining how hip morphology influences JSW.

Pincer-FAI hips showed significantly narrower JSW, compared to most other groups, expect for mixed-FAI hips.

Hip morphology, including acetabular coverage, lateral center edge angle (LCEA), Tönnis angle, and femoral neck shaft angle (FNSA), were strongly linked to JSW.

‘Future technologies and Hip Arthroscopy: Recent Innovations in the Management of Hip Preservation Surgery’ in Operative Techniques in Sports Medicine | Lauren M Heylmun, Brianna N Rowe, Kelly Maradaus, James W Genuario MD, Michael B Ellman MD

This narrative review explores how innovations like three-dimensional (3D) modeling and templating, machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and robotic-, computer-, and AI- assisted surgery are shaping the future of hip preservation surgery. Each of these technologies are paving the way toward more accurate diagnoses, personalized treatment strategies, and improved surgical outcomes.

As fall sports season is in full swing, you might not realize that another sport is also in the spotlight equestrian competition! It is show season for competitive riders, and as the Sports Medicine & Performance Center expands its equestrian sports medicine services, Dr. Ballantine has been busy covering horse shows across the country She reflects on this work, sharing:

"Bringing education to the equestrian community about sports medicine has been truly rewarding. This patient population so often takes better care of their horses than they do their own bodies. Helping equestrians realize they are athletes too is one of our main goals in our program. In addition, helping barns and equine programs create emergency action plans to keep riders safe when falls and accidents happen is our other huge priority."

BOULDERCOMMUNITYHEALTH LECTURESWITHDR.BALLANTINE

Over the summer and into early fall, Dr. Ballantine presented two community lectures through Boulder Community Health (BCH). The first focused on Equestrian Sports Medicine, titled “Staying Strong in the Saddle: Dispelling Common Beliefs About Equestrian Health.” The second addressed sports concussions, highlighting best practices for recognition and management.

Both lectures are available online and can be used for patient care:
