FEB - JUL 2026

HOPE GROWS HERE

Welcome to Season 6

Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune without the words, And never stops at all.

I write this at a time when the world has never felt more divided. A polarised planet can feel like a lonely place, and I can only hope that within these pages and our walls we can all find a space of safety to come together. A space where we can learn, talk openly, dream bigger and better, and remind ourselves that we are better living in connection with each other and this beautiful planet than as isolated individuals. Last season our highlight was holding space with Misan Harriman, and the theme this season builds on that conversation. We can cultivate hope, we can grow hope through action while remembering that humans are social animals; born to work together.

This season there will, as always, be a combination of laughter, music, poetry, talks, and of course film. There will be uplift and there will be safely challenging conversations. There will be community and the championing of the arts in all its forms. There will also be the opportunity to take part in workshops ranging from poetry, to print and the multifaceted joy of flowers.

The cover this season is a photo I took on my walk to work one morning. It was a timely reminder that life can flourish through adversity, and in the most unexpected places. It’s also a nod to two of our treasured partners this year, We Grow Colour (keep an eye on socials, the newsletter and our website for workshop details) and Through The Cracks, who are helping shape the panel discussion about Artificial Intelligence: Progress or Pitfall. I’m signing this off in the bleakness of a grey January. But delving in to the events laid out over the months ahead I can almost feel the warmth of spring and summer coming, the nurture of experiences shared, and I hold on to the glimpse of seedlings that triumphed over adversity, growing up through cracks in the pavement.

Hope Grows Here.

CONNECTIONS

BLUE HAS NO BORDERS + Q&A

Fri 2o MAR 7pm

The people seated at this table are all neighbours, living in Folkestone where refugees arrive daily and political divides deepen. They are all just people; complex, vulnerable, and contradictory, each grappling with identity, economic pressure and an uncertain future. the Spies Who Ruined

Our Lives + Q&A

In collaboration with the Bristol Radical History Group, we are diving into the SpyCops scandal. For over 40 years, a secret British police unit infiltrated more than 1,000 lawful groups to spy on citizens. Officers stole the identities of dead children, created fake personas, and formed long-term relationships with women. Decades later, the truth emerged: these men were undercover police officers. With the enquiry still proceeding and police powers seemingly increasing, this story is still very current.

IRON LADIES + Q&A

thu 21 may

A celebration of the iron willed women who maintained the 1984/85 Miners’ Strike as they fought for the future of their communities. From Scotland to Kent, women from the coalfields shed light on their experiences of the struggle, and how they became the backbone of the movement. Their actions reshaped the landscape of political activism for working-class women, accidentally liberating them in the process.

Experience the soulful sound of the bağlama, the heartbeat of Turkish folk music, with singer/ musician Ozcan Ates, accompanied by three UK based musicians. The evening will be hosted by Michael Loader of Somerset Storyfest. This unique concert filled with emotion, tradition, passion and personal stories is part of the national Refugee Week celebrations, building on our ‘Four Voices’ event last year. There will be food, time to talk, stalls and most importantly –community and connection.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO ALLEE WILLIS

Allee Willis was a true original, a woman ahead of her time, she didn’t conform and gave her whole self to her art in all its most playful forms. Everything she encountered became touched by her own, Allee, brand of art. She’s the most famous songwriter you’ve never heard of. She should be a household name but mavericks, and female ones at that, are so often better known posthumously. A psychedelic ride of a doc about the woman who won a Grammy, wrote the theme-tune to Friends, the musical hit ‘The Color Purple’, Earth Wind & Fire’s mega-hit ‘September’ and “Boogie Wonderland’, worked in set design, art exhibitions, videos, and remained largely unknown. Keep an eye out for details on how ticket holders can book on to an Allee-inspired arts workshop.
