About Curzon Cinema and Arts

Welcome to Season 2

The Curzon has been at the heart of the North Somerset community for 111 years. Our Grade-II listed cinema and concert hall was built in 1912 by local entrepreneur Victor Cox, making us one of the oldest cinemas in the country. The cinema was saved by the community in 1996 and we have been operating as a registered charity ever since. In addition to showing the latest Hollywood blockbusters, we offer a diverse programme of live events exploring all artforms whilst living our motto of being: “Independent, Unique, and Yours”.

Accessibility We are an accessible venue for wheelchair users, or anyone requiring step-free access and offer a range of options for seats with space for your wheelchair or extra legroom. Just ask a member of staff at the Box Office and we’ll be happy to open the access doors for you. We regularly have subtitled screenings for people with impaired hearing and relaxed screenings for those on the autism/sensory spectrum, people living with dementia and anyone who would benefit from a relaxed cinema experience. Food and Drink Popcorn, sweets, chocolate, crisps, nuts, Marshfield ice cream, tea, Oddkin coffee, and a large range of still and fizzy drinks are always in stock to purchase at our Box Office and Kiosk. Complete your night out by relaxing in our Oak Room Bar with a drink from our wide selection of local beers (including our house beer, Reel Ale, from Twisted Oak), spirits, wines, and soft drinks before the film. Thank you to everyone who has been embracing and taking part in the creative journey that was Season 1 which saw us greatly expand our offering: building on our desire to deliver more than ‘just film’, reaching beyond the screen to connect people, ideas and art forms. If you’re new to us, welcome! The Curzon has a rich history as one of the world’s oldest continuously running cinemas, residing in a beautiful Grade II listed building whose heritage charm houses the latest in big screen technology. While we continue to screen the latest films this programme encompasses our one-off events, curated into named strands as outlined below. Outdoor Adventure continues with stories of hope, endurance and free spirits. Connections holds varied themes within it by embracing the essence of community within a global mindset. Off The Page celebrates the literary in dynamic form with author talks and spoken word events. Classic & Cuppa does what it says on the tin, to warm up your Tuesday. Sound & Vision brings the building alive with the best music/film combos. A new, thought-provoking visual art strand entitled Colour & Light is set to inspire and ignite those creative brain cells. If laughter is the best medicine, then our audience cottoned onto this fact long ago: our Live Comedy nights are always popular so it’s best to book early for your own wellbeing. Event cinema brings theatre, ballet and opera to the big screen. Our Immersive event this season celebrates the incredible work of Ennio Morricone with selections of his film scores played by the wonderfully playful Fantasy Orchestra. SHAFF – Sheffield Adventure Film Festival On Tour The best new adventure, travel and extreme sport short films from one of the most well-regarded festivals is landing at the Curzon. A selection of the most popular films from this year’s SHAFF, including the most exciting voices and athletes from the worlds of climbing, biking, running and the water.

Gaza Surf Club +Q&A Filmed in 2016 this is the film that transcended the political and humanised some of the occupants of Gaza to a wider audience via the stars’ love of surfing as escapism in a land that wasn’t allowed to import surf boards. Blood, Sweat and Oars

10 years after the Clevedon Pilot Gig Club first showed Blood, Sweat & Oars at the Curzon they are back for an anniversary outing that will fundraise for the Clevedon Gig Shed Appeal. The film follows the club’s training and trip to the Cornish Pilot Gig World Championship on the Isles of Scilly in 2013 after which the Club has gone from strength to strength. Clevedon Pilot Gig Club would like to invite all rowers from across the region to come and celebrate everything ‘Gigging’ followed by a few drinks and no doubt a few tall stories.

You’re invited to our 112th birthday party! We’ll be opening the whole building for backstage tours and a special exhibition of never-before-seen archive photographs and playbills that tell the story of our first screenings right through to our balcony reopening last year. We’ll round off the party with a rare screening of The Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night” on 35mm film. And yes, there will be cake!

Homegrown Shorts 2024 The seventh annual outing of our favourite film festival championing lush local creators returns with a night of short films giving a platform to emerging and developing talent from the South West. The event will include an intimate Q&A with industry figures and filmmakers after the screening in the Oak Room bar.

Green Shift Festival Green Shift is a fresh 2-day festival curated in partnership with Sustainable Clevedon, exploring how we can take small steps to create a big impact towards a low-carbon, sustainable future for our planet. Featuring a host of talks, workshops, films and live music and comedy, the weekend will have something to interest everyone. Tickets are available as day tickets or weekend passes. Come and quiz your political representatives as they present their parties’ plans for Net Zero. Learn what Climate Justice means, its importance to the movement and how to centre it in our communities, with a lively panel discussion from leading practitioners and educators.

The day starts with panel discussions from regional and local representatives on plans to get to Net Zero, plus talks from Sustainable Clevedon, Our Tides and Clevedon School.

A delicious vegan dinner from one of our favourite ethical Bristol caterers, Houria, is available to pre-order with your ticket (please note the deadline as it is pre-order only). Our film for the Saturday is Can You Dig This, the inspiring story of the ‘Gangsta Gardeners’ of South Central LA bringing unity, knowledge and sustenance via an urban gardening revolution in their communities. Saturday evening will round off with an intro and set of live music from Seth Bye (of Filkin’s Drift).

Matt Winning: the comedian and environmental researcher known for his Ted-X talk, award-winning comedy, BBC Radio 4 show and podcast joins us to bring some muchneeded laughter to the topic of climate change. Our Sunday film is Common Ground, the sequel to Kiss The Ground, starring Woody Harrelson, Jason Momoa, Laura Dern and Donald Glover. Revealing how unjust practices forged our current farm system while profiling a hopeful and uplifting movement of white, black, and indigenous farmers who are using alternative “regenerative” models of agriculture that could balance the climate, save our health, and stabilise economies – before it’s too late. We finish off the weekend with a madcap set of musical tinphonia beats from The Junkoactive Wasteman!

Dreamgirls “Few pictures can match the glamorous pull of Dreamgirls. Bill Condon’s first big musical since Chicago is a glossy, gleaming Cadillac of a film with a vintage rhythm and blues engine tuned to perfection…the cast is dressed to kill.”

Getting it Back: The Story of Cymande + DJ Ngaio

Our first music extravaganza of Season 2 is a toe-tapping Motown roller-coaster ride with a host of added extras that are worth dressing in your ‘70s soulful best for. Disco balls at the ready, we are welcoming back Able Mabel for free hair-styling, candy-floss a go-go and a cinema alive with the talents of the Dreamettes wannabes. (Starring Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy)

Cymande, a Black British group from the 1970s, who by rights should have become superstars back then but did eventually change music history – and the dancefloor. This is the story of these unsung heroes, told on screen through archive footage and new interviews with the original band plus tributes from musicians and producers who have been influenced and enthralled by their music, including Mark Ronson, Norman Jay, Jazzie B, Khruangbin, Loyle Carner, DJ Maseo of De La Soul, Jim James, Louie Vega and more. This is going to be a hard one to sit still through, but we have DJ Ngaio on the decks before the film, so arrive early for the full experience.

The Blues Brothers + Jonah Hitchens Band One Love + Irie Fire LIVE Come and celebrate the life of musical great Bob Marley with this special event featuring a live set before the film from 7-piece reggae fusion band, Irie Fire. Mixing reggae, dub, ska, rock and blues to create their unique soulful reggae sound. The film celebrates the life and music of an icon who inspired generations through his message of love and unity.

Dig out your dark glasses “We’re getting the band back together.” Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi’s much-loved hilarious classic is back on the big screen for this one-off event where we invite you to come dressed in your finest Bro-suit. Arrive early to hear the brilliant Jonah Hitchens Band playing a set of Blues Brothers favourites. Get ready for a lot of laughter, plenty of whiskey, and one of the best soundtracks both live and on screen.

The School Of Rock with The Rock Project “We’re not goofing off. We’re creating musical fusion.” – Dewey Finn This event is a long-planned collaboration between the Curzon and The Rock Project, these screenings both feature live performances from Rock Proj students in the auditorium before the film. NT Live: V anya Andrew Scott (Fleabag) brings multiple characters to life in Simon Stephens’ (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) radical new version of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. Hopes, dreams, and regrets are thrust into sharp focus in this one-man adaptation which explores the complexities of human emotions.

NT Live: The Motive and the Cue Sam Mendes (The Lehman Trilogy) directs Mark Gatiss as John Gielgud and Johnny Flynn as Richard Burton in this fierce and funny new play. 1964: Richard Burton, newly married to Elizabeth Taylor, is to play the title role in an experimental new Broadway production of Hamlet under John Gielgud’s exacting direction. But as rehearsals progress, two ages of theatre collide and the collaboration between actor and director soon threatens to unravel.

This Season’s Classic & Cuppa strand has been guest curated by our Chair of Trustees and film lover, David Sheridan; “ These are the movies that made a real impression when I first saw them and have stayed with me over time. They are not often seen on the big screen where they belong, so these will be rare showings. They are very varied but all classics.”

North By Northwest Cary Grant teams with director Alfred Hitchcock for the fourth and final time in this timeless espionage caper. After Roger Thornhill, an innocent man, is mistaken for a wanted fugitive he is pursued across North America by a pair of espionage agents trying to kill him, as well as by police who suspect him of murder.

Two sisters living in a 1920s mining town in the midlands of England embark on relationships that entwine passion, sensuality and recklessness. Whilst on holiday with their partners, the relationships head in divergent directions.

In this adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ woozy Southern masterpiece, Brick (Paul Newman), an alcoholic ex-football player, drinks his days away and resists the affections of his wife, Maggie (Elizabeth Taylor). His reunion with his father, Big Daddy (Burl Ives) who is dying of cancer, jogs a host of memories and revelations for both father and son, and for Maggie caught between them.

In this pre-Hays code classic, millionaire turned composer Dick Powell rescues unemployed Broadway performers with a new play, but insists on the condition that he must remain anonymous.

In a rural French village an old man and his only remaining relative cast their covetous eyes on an adjoining vacant property, greedy for its spring water. When they block up the spring thinking only of keeping the water for themselves, they look on as their new neighbour breaks his health and his family’s hearts as he tries to keep his crops alive.

In 1881 New Mexico, sheriff Pat Garrett (James Coburn) is hired on behalf of a group of wealthy New Mexico cattle barons to bring down his old friend and outlaw Billy the Kid (Kris Kristofferson). Pat assembles a posse to chase him, unaware of the full scope of the cattle interests’ plans for the New West.

Manon, a beautiful shepherdess in Provence, has lost her father and seen her family’s livelihood ruined through the greediness of her neighbors. Now grown and living in isolation from the village, she plots revenge against the men for their misdeeds. Her plot is complicated by Ugolin, who has fallen in love with her - but Manon’s retribution will not be deterred.

The fascinating story of the queen of polka dots and creator of Infinity Mirrors, Yayoi Kusama, one of the most popular artists in the world today. She has received the Praemium Imperiale Laureate for lifetime achievement in painting, was named the world’s ‘most popular artist’ and one of the ‘most expensive living female artists’. Tracing Kusama’s trajectory from a conservative upbringing in Japan to battling sexism and racism in 1960s NYC to her unstoppable rise to international fame.

Visually thrilling and refreshingly unconventional filmmaker Wim Wenders pays mesmerizing tribute to a brilliant artist’s life and legacy. Presenting a cinematic experience of the artist’s work which explores human existence and the cyclical nature of history, inspired by literature, poetry, philosophy, science, mythology, and religion. Wenders traced Anselm Kiefer’s path from his native Germany to his current home in France, connecting the stages of his life to the essential places of his career spanning more than five decades.

Arcadia +Q&A To coincide with the Constable in Britain: “Truth to Nature” exhibition at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, we are thrilled to be joined by Adrian Utley (Portishead) and Julia Carver (exhibition curator) for a Q&A and screening of BAFTAwinner Paul Wright’s exhilarating

study of the British people’s shifting and contradictory relationship with the land. Arcadia, which was scored by Utley and Will Gregory (Goldfrapp) takes the viewer on an immersive and sensory journey through 100 years of archive footage of the British countryside.

We are living in a time of great polarisation, both politically and within the more personal realms of self and community. How do we address these divisions with empathy rather than letting them create further societal splits and feelings of isolation? As an intersectional psychotherapist, Dwight Turner works with these internalised polarities that are outwardly represented in the culture around us. He will be discussing how, in a world of external dualities, do we fight and work to hold these differences while finding compassion so that we can reconstitute and reconnect with our communities.

They challenge perceptions of poetry/spoken word to create dynamic events that never fail to lift, inspire, and empower audiences. IMMERSIVE The Fantasy Orchestra plays Ennio Morricone After their spectacular sell out Bowie set in January the Fantasy Orchestra return to the Curzon. This time the 70 plus musicians and choir present a set of music by Italian maestro soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone. Morricone, perhaps best known for his scores for the so called “spaghetti westerns” composed over 400 film scores as well as countless pop hits and classical pieces.

You can expect this to be visually and aurally fantastic in every way. The Curzon version of a 4D experience is a step-up from your theme park spectacular. Expect to come dressed up, immerse yourself in the classic days of cinema when soundtracks reigned supreme and ear worms were more than a 5-minute pop phenomenon.

The Fantasy Orchestra manifesto epitomises the community ethos of the Curzon, and Morricone’s sweepingly cinematic film scores are the most immersive and appropriate experience to have in a cinema which would have witnessed them all in their infancy to sell-out audiences eager for the dramatic escapism of the day. Feel the history, see the spectacular, hear the maestro, breathe the atmosphere, be immersed.
