BIOS AARON MAHNKE ꟷ HOST One of the most successful podcast producers in the world, Aaron began his career in 2015 with the launch of Lore, which has racked up nearly half-a-billion downloads, been adapted for two seasons of television on Amazon Prime, and published as a three-book set from Penguin Random House. Over eight years later, InsideRadio still lists Aaron as one of “2023’s Most Powerful People in Podcasting.” Aaron currently writes, narrates, and produces a number of wildly popular shows, including the 2021 breakout hit Bridgewater. CHAD LAWSON ꟷ PIANIST AND COMPOSER Born in North Carolina, Chad knew he wanted to be a musician at the age of five. He is a master musician and artist extraordinaire, and his brilliance is evident through his gifted original compositions and his exceptional interpretations of the beloved classics. With multiple #1 releases, Chad has a different approach to classical music; don’t make it classical. His #1 iTunes release re:piano (2018) pushed the envelope of what the piano sounds like, with an album composed of loops, effects and layers of textured landscapes ꟷ all from a piano. Lawson was invited to share his approach to re:piano on NPR’s Weekend Edition with Scott Simon.

Music Hall Ghost Stories Stories of ghosts in Music Hall are legendary. Groups that specialize in the paranormal often visit the iconic venue to determine the presence of "other-worldly" figures. Throughout its history, excavations in and around Music Hall have uncovered human bones; in fact, a map from 1830 shows that the south part of the venue was built over a potter's field. It is widely believed that the ''souls and spirits'' that wander Music Hall make their presence known upon occasion. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the experiences are real. Individuals who do not usually make things up, either to get attention or to deliberately mislead, have shared their first-hand spectral accounts. Longtime employees of resident arts groups at Music Hall have often spoken about being in the presence of ghosts. The late Cincinnati Pops Music Director Erich Kunzel, who spent many nights in the haunted venue working on programs and arrangements, believed that these spirits were basically quite friendly: “They are definitely in this building, some sort of spirits. If anybody thinks I'm nuts, come here at 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning.” Cincinnati Opera General Director Emeritus Patricia Beggs spent many nights at Music Hall during opera season and says she too felt their presence. She related an experience in the 1990s of a fellow opera employee: “One of our employees came to Music Hall one day during our season when we were dark (a non-performance day), and he brought his little three-year-old son Charlie with him. They went on stage, and Charlie was pretending that he was performing. Suddenly, he looked over and said, ‘Daddy, who's that man in the box?’ It was Jesus Lopez-Cobos' box (then Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Music Director), which is Box 9, and his father Tom said, ‘There's nobody in the box, Charlie.’ ‘Yes, there is. He's waving at me right now,’ Charlie replied. And so, with that, they packed up and left very quickly.” Senior Event Manager Terri Kidney has worked at Music Hall for more than thirty years. Because the ghostly experiences she's heard about have been happy, she believes the spirits that inhabit Music Hall are perhaps people who had at one time attended events there and had a good time: “One of our ticketing staff members was working in the box office. There was a ‘ding’ outside (the bell indicating that someone is at the window), and there was nobody there. The bell kept going off, so he finally left the box office, went outside, and didn't see anyone. He went back in, and it kept dinging, so he went back out again. At one point, he was back in the box office, and he felt a tug on his shirt sleeve. He looked down and there was a little boy in period dress – knickers and a little cap – who was tugging on him.” John Engst, who was a night watchman at Music Hall for quite a few years, had a lot of stories about ghosts and happenings during the evening and late-night hours when he worked. Engst wrote an account of his most harrowing experience, which occurred one night after everyone had left the building. He was making his usual rounds ꟷ when he heard music and couldn't find the source: “I re-entered the elevator and closed the doors. The music was still there, and I'm starting to tingle now. I opened the rear of the elevator and entered the adjoining hall – no sound. Returning to the elevator to proceed to Corbett Tower and close it up, the music was as beautiful as ever. For nearly two weeks, I could not approach the elevator shaft on the first floor late at night without my whole body tingling.” These are just a few of the many ghost stories told throughout the years by Music Hall staff and visitors who have had spiritual encounters in the haunted venue. If these departed souls decide to stay at their adopted home to enjoy the music, there may be many more stories to come! – Article courtesy of Friends of Music Hall
