‘The Music Man’ is charming, pleasurable trip back to 1912 Review by Hope Baugh
Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of “The Music Man” is charming for many reasons. Director Eddie Curry’s staging cleverly incorporates the whole theater, for one thing, so the talented actors make you feel as if you are a resident of River City. All you need is a pair of spats and a vest if you’re a man or a giant, doodad-bedecked hat if you’re a woman. Designer Jill Kelly’s gorgeous costumes are tempting. Best of all, even though you’ve been transported back to 1912 via a script from the 1950s, the show’s messages about the power of love are surprisingly relevant to today’s crazy world. We still make wrong assumptions, based on gossip and our own baggage, about everything from traveling salesmen to unmarried women to the intentions of teenagers to what our soul mate will be like. We still, when true love comes along, change as needed to honor it. At least, I like to think so. Curt Dale Clark is dazzling as “Professor” Harold Hill – a handsome con man that has been infuriating legitimate traveling salesmen for years. He convinces River City families to buy instruments and band uniforms so he can help them form a band, but he doesn’t actually know anything about music. He intends to leave town with a big wad of cash before anyone finds out. Sweet-voiced Katie Sina is steely-vulnerable as Marian Paroo – the town’s librarian, music

She intends to expose Harold’s con before he can hurt anyone, including her little brother. Somehow, though, while Harold is distracting the townspeople into forming barbershop quartets and dance groups, and Marian is trying to get people to read, the two fall in love, and everything changes. I bet you will recognize many of the songs. A friend told me she sings “Wells Fargo Wagon” to herself while she waits for the UPS man. What Hoosier hasn’t heard “Gary, Indiana” at some point? Cinco de Mayo Glazed Chicken Wings Cottage Cheese Chicken Enchiladas Nachos in a Cup IIngredients: 1 pound ground beef, 250-milliliter jar salsa, 1 (10-ounce) bag Tostitos Scoops, 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 1 cup sour cream or guacamole Directions: Cook beef on medium to high heat in a nonstick pan until browned. Drain the beef and rinse pan. Add beef back to pan. Pour jar of salsa into beef mixture. Let simmer until beef absorbs sauce. While the mixture is cooking, heat oven to 350 F. Place a cooking sheet on any flat oven pan. Place the Tostitos Scoops facing up on the pan. Once the mixture is ready, spoon into Tostitos Scoops and sprinkle with the cheddar cheese. Cook until cheese has melted. Place each Tostitos Scoops on a platter. Serve with sour cream or guacamole. - Food.com
Ingredients: 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, 2 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, boiled and shredded, 1/2 cup chopped onion, 7 ounces chopped green chili peppers, 1 ounce taco seasoning mix, 1/2 cup sour cream, 2 cups cottage cheese, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 pinch ground black pepper, 12 (6-inch) corn tortillas, 2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese, 10-ounce can red enchilada sauce Directions: Meat – heat oil in medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add
chicken, onion and green chili peppers. Sauté until browned, then add taco seasoning and prepare meat mixture according to package directions. Cheese – in a bowl, mix sour cream with cottage cheese and season with salt and pepper; stir until blended. Preheat oven to 350 F. Enchiladas – heat tortillas until soft. In each tortilla, place a spoonful of meat mixture, a spoonful of cheese mixture and a bit of shredded cheese. Roll tortillas and place in a greased 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Top with any remaining meat and cheese mixture, enchilada sauce and remaining shredded cheese. Bake at 350 F for 30 minutes.- Allrecipes.com

“Haywire” • R, 92 minutes Commentary by Chris Lloyd
“Haywire” is a gimmick movie, and not a very good one. Its entire premise is built around the now-ubiquitous figure of the globe-trotting super-spy, a la Jason Bourne, who has amazing hand-to-hand combat skills. Except in this case, the butt-kicker supreme is a woman – specifically, novice actress and Mixed Martial Arts star Gina Carano. Director Steven Soderbergh doesn’t do anything particularly imaginative with this tired genre other than flip the gender of the protagonist. It’s almost as if he and screenwriter Lem Dobbs are saying, “See, we can make a movie with a female lead where the characters are just as stilted, the plot just as much a nonsensical bramble as one starring a dude.” Carano, who resembles Rachel Weisz on human growth hormones, isn’t asked to do much beyond scowl and kick. If the movie’s entire reason for existence is to prove a woman can be as convincing as a brutish action star, then Carano certainly passes muster. If, on the other hand, the idea is to create a believable, identifiable character and see how she reacts to seemingly insurmountable circumstances, then Carano is out of her league.
