For Fishers artist Jeremy Mallov, it has been difficult for him to make his way into art galleries, mostly as a result of to the unique aspects of his own art. “Out of college (Indiana Univeristy), I was stuck between two forms of art. I did landscapes with very expressive colors and a lot of emotion, which unfortunately, left me out of many traditional and modern art galleries,” said Mallov. Traditional landscapes, while somewhat expressive, tend to be more about replicating the reality of the situation. Modern art tends to view landscapes as too traditional. By bridging this divide, Mallov has created a difficult path for himself. “I choose subject matters ripe with meaning and metaphor. My Jamaican seascapes double as reflections on marriage. Venetian canals symbol-
ize freedoms found and lost. Each landscape captures not only the look and feel of the location, but also the deeper meanings of what I was experiencing at the time and what the place symbolizes to me. myself as an artist,” said Mallov. Mallov, an art teacher at Amy Beverland Elementary in Lawrence Township, is looking to get more than exposure for his work out of the event. He is also hoping to create a learning experience for his students and a way to give back to the community. “I have invited all of the students at my school, more than 600 children, to come and see my exhibition,” Mallov said. “It’s good for my students to see that I am, outside of teaching, an artist actually practicing his art.” Additionally, Mallov is partnering with Fishers United Methodist Church’s “Come-To-Me” Food Pantry to make his event a food drive, as well as an art show. Canned-food donations will be collected throughout the event. “I’d like to get my name out there and really establish myself as a local Fishers artist,” said Mallov. “I want to show people there is a growing cultural aspect to Fishers, as well as a

More actors in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of “The Music Man” call Carmel “home” than any other town. But now – at least until May 25 – they are fictional residents of River City, Iowa. Vickie Cornelius Phipps, as Mrs. Paroo, is taking the Beef & Boards stage for the first time. This Carmel resident moved from California at age 19 to attend Indiana and Wesleyan Universities. Now married and the mother of two sons, Phipps has returned to live theater – a love she discovered in high school. Also making her Beef & Boards debut is Susan B. Smith, as Alma Hix. A licensed certified public accountant by day, Smith has enjoyed performing since she was young. “I landed the lead as Bossy Betty the Evil Fairy in first grade,” Smith recalls. “I’ve been hamming it up ever since!” At the helm of River City is its Mayor Shinn, played by longtime Carmel resident, Doug Stark. The theater’s owner and artistic director, Stark treads the boards each season in a show or two. Josh Stark joins his father on stage as Constable Locke. An occasional performer, Josh was last seen in the Pyramid Players production of “Dora’s Pirate Adventure” as Benny the Bull. Carmel’s talents are also found in longtime Beef & Boards choreographer Ron Morgan, who is director of Performer’s Edge School for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Corvette becomes best sports car in world Commentary by Shawn Miller
With the introduction of the C4 Corvette in 1984, the Corvette became the best sports car for the price. With the introduction of the C5 in 1997, the Corvette became the best sports car available at any price. The C5 was a major change from the C4. Designed as a sturdy convertible, as opposed to a coupe that was weakened by the removal of the roof structure, the car now had a hydro-formed box frame. An integrated, rear-mounted transaxle assembly was used. This arrangement, long employed in European sports cars, gave the C5 an equal weight distribution. The alloy LS1 engine initially produced 345 horsepower, but was increased slightly in 2001 to 350 horsepower. The automatic transmission carried on from previous models, but the stick was replaced by a Borg Warner 6 Speed giving the C5 a top speed of 175 mph. The styling of the C5 was also dramatically different than the C4, with more rounded and graceful lines, a double-bubble top and a very low drag coefficient. The C5 paced the Indy 500 three times during its seven-year production run. Most collectible are three special editions: the ’98 Pace Car Replica, the ’03 Fifth

Egg Drop Soup Ingredients: 3 cups chicken broth, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 dash white pepper, 1 medium green onion, chopped, 2 eggs, slightly beaten Directions: Heat chicken broth, salt and white pepper to boiling in 2-quart saucepan. Stir green onions into eggs. Pour egg mixture slowly into broth, stirring constantly with fork until egg forms shreds. - Food.com
Ingredients: 3 tablespoons cornstarch, divided, 1/2 cup water, 2 tablespoons water, divided, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 pound boneless round steak, cut into thin 3-inch strips, 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided, 4 cups broccoli florets, 1 small onion, cut into wedges, 1/3 cup soy sauce, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, hot cooked rice Directions: In a bowl, combine 2 table-
spoons cornstarch, 2 tablespoons water and garlic powder until smooth. Add beef and toss. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, stir-fry beef in 1 tablespoon oil until beef reaches desired doneness; remove and keep warm. Stir-fry broccoli and onion in remaining oil for 4 to 5 minutes. Return beef to pan. Combine soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger, remaining cornstarch and water until smooth; add to pan. Cook and stir for 2 minutes. Serve over rice. - Food.com

Drop 1/3 cup of batter on a greased cookie sheet. Spread evenly into a 10-inch circle. Bake in oven until cookie turns a light golden brown (about 13 to 15 minutes). The “Mission: Impossible” movie franchise had grown moribund, and Tom Cruise’s career along with it. Even when he made light, crowd-pleasing movies like “Knight and Day,” audiences stayed away in droves. Luckily for both, the newest film, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” was not only the best in the series and a huge international box office hit, it was quite possibly the best action/thriller in all of 2011. The big question mark surrounding the movie – other than audiences’ recent disinclination to buy tickets to any movie with Cruise in it – was whether director Brad Bird, having conquered the field of animation (“The Incredibles”), could translate his skills to live-action filmmaking. One only has to watch any one of the several stunning action sequences in “Ghost” to end any uncertainty. My favorite was the scene where Cruise climbs the tallest building in the world using only a pair of high-tech magnetic gloves, one of which only functions intermit-
tently. Meanwhile, inside, the rest of his team intervenes in the sale of nuclear secrets between two sets of bad guys, simultaneously.
