“The Hunger Games” (Friday) – In the film adaptation of Suzanne Collin’s acclaimed novel, Katniss Everdeen is forced to volunteer to fight to the death.

Behind the curtain Off-Main Street Players take on ‘Deathtrap’ By Sarina Neote • editorial@youarecurrent.com

The Off-Main Street Players have performed everything from skits to plays, and even local commercials. But Ira Levin’s 1978 Tony-nominated “Deathtrap” presents a whole new challenge. Filled with layered, intricate plots and sarcastic humor, the actors and actresses transform into a group of selfish, devious characters willing to do almost anything for fame and wealth. “Deathtrap,” running Friday and Saturday at Zionsville Town Hall “is a play about people who want the most for themselves,” director Sam Fogleman said. “As characters, they’re probably the most selfish people I’ve ever seen. (It’s) meant to be a play-watcher’s play.” The production revolves around Sydney Bruhl, a successful playwright of Broadway thrillers. Played by Larry Adams, Sydney becomes desperate as he hits a literary dry spell and has to financially rely on his wife, Myra, played by Susan McClelland. When meeting Jamie Johnson’s Cliff Anderson, an idea is

sprouted from the depths of greed, twisting the plot deeper into the unknown. McClelland is a Zionsville resident, while Adams maintains a medical practice there. Paul Gootee, another Zionsville native, plays the role of Porter. “A comedy-thriller seems like an oxymoron, but it still scares the pants off of you,” producer George Piper II said. “I am familiar with the script, and still, the characters build so much suspense. They get us on edge, even though we know what’s going to happen.” Transforming into the role of being selfish and greedy can seem a bit daunting, but McClelland has methods of becoming the character. “You find that piece of the character in yourself,” she says. “I do a lot of my own homework. I looked into when the characters were born, what plays Myra and Sydney would go to. I think Myra, particularly, fits me.” Adams spent time figuring out the dynamics of his character. “The difficult thing is, at some points, (he’s)

trying to convince his wife of something untrue, then convince the audience of something untrue,” he said. “You try to figure out who you’re convincing (of what).” As a comedy-thriller, this play has everything from humor to suspense. Performed by a group of experienced actors, “Deathtrap” keeps everyone on the edge of their seat until the very end. “It scares me and I know what’s coming,” McClelland said. Hoosier Dome’s High School Battle of the Bands seeks to bring new talent to light By Christian Sorrell • christian@youarecurrent.com

During the course of the next two months, Piradical Productions will be accepting application for the High School Battle of the Bands. The event aims to collect bands of young musicians from throughout central Indiana. All-ages shows and the continued growth of the Indiana music scene are of utmost importance to Stephen Zumbrun, Piradical Zumbrun founder. “The primary goal with the High School Battle of the Bands is to give exposure and encouragement to new bands. The majority of bands that will be participating have never played the Hoosier Dome (a new venue named in honor of the stadium),” said Zumbrun. “For some bands, like last year’s winner, it is their very first show.” Due to Indiana’s bar laws, Indianapolis and its surrounding communities have always been problematic for underage concertgoers and band members. Since its founding in 2005, Piradical Productions has been dedicated to all-ages entertainment in Indianapolis. “We are trying to give new bands a chance to play that have never played the Hoosier Dome or any other venue before,” said Zumbrun. A panel of judges will examine the applications and trim the crowd down to 24 bands based on a number of criteria. Quality of music, proximity to Indianapolis and the age of the band are all taken into consideration. For Piradical, the intention of the battle is a bit of a two-way street. New and upcoming acts can interface directly with the individuals booking shows, as well as perform their music live. At the same time, Piradical gains access to some N2 | March 20, 2012

of tomorrow’s most popular local acts from the start, and can work to build a community around them as time goes on. “I am excited to have a bunch of new bands come through and experience a grass roots local venue for the first time,” said Zumbrun. “Even though the Hoosier Dome is a relatively new venue compared to the ES Jungle (where the battle was held last year), I’m still hoping for a great turn out.” To those looking to try their hand at music, Zumbrun encourages them to go out there and make it happen. “The more people making music, putting on concerts (even if it is in their own basement) and going to shows, the better it is for the whole music scene in central Indiana,” said Zumbrun. Piradical Productions is accepting applications for local high school bands. Apply as soon as possible at www.piradicalproductions.com/ battle. The first two rounds of the competition will take place April 21 and 22 at The Hoosier Dome (1627 Prospect St., Indianapolis) with the finals on May 5. “The Muppets” • PG, 103 minutes Review by Chris Lloyd

The Muppets are back, and now they’re Oscar-winning Muppets! The successful reboot of the dormant puppet franchise of Jim Henson is a joyous walk down memory lane for Generation X kids like me who grew up on Kermit, Missy Piggy, Fozzie Bear and the rest of the gang. Now, they can bring their own moppets to see “The Muppets,” and the cinematic circle of life is complete. The film even picked up an Academy Award for Best Song (though I am compelled to point out it only had one competitor, in one of the weakest contests in Oscar history). Jason Segal and Amy Adams are the human stars, though they’re mostly just hanging around to set up the Muppets and their antics. Segal N4 | March 20, 2012

also cowrote the screenplay. The running gag is the Muppets are washed up and forgotten, until their old theater in Los Angeles is scheduled to be demolished by an evil oil tycoon (Chris Cooper), who thinks there’s black gold underneath it. Director James Bobin goes for a blend of high and low humor – pratfalls and silliness for the kiddies, and wry puns and breaking of the fourth wall for their parents. It’s a good mix, and it’s good to see the old gang again. Movie: B Read more of Chris Lloyd’s review of current films and DVDs at www. captaincritic.blogspot.com or www. thefilmyap.com.

Time gone by: ‘Casablanca’ celebrates 70 years Commentary by Mark Johnson

The first time I saw “Casablanca,” I was a high school junior enrolled in a literature course. “Casablanca” was part of our final project. I will never forget the excitement I felt at the prospect of seeing this wonderful film for the first time. This was an experience like no other: viewing one of the greatest films of all time among friends and without the nuisance of commercial TV. Thirty years later, “Casablanca” has lost none of its power, charm or charisma. In those ensuing years, I’ve observed countless rereleases, remasters and new-movie poster art – all coinciding with one of the film’s many anniversaries. Perhaps most noteworthy was the fervor created in the 1980s when Ted Turner infamously “colorized” the movie with decidedly-garish results. Perhaps to make amends, Turner Classic Movies, NCM Fathom and Warner Brothers are teaming up to bring Casablanca 70th Anniversary Event to the big screen for a special one-night showing. In addition to a new digital transfer of the film, fans will be treated to a special introduction by film expert Robert Osborne, as well as other extras. What is it about “Casablanca” that still fascinates film fans? “Casablanca” is the complete package: a film that expertly blends romance, intrigue, action and drama with perfect performances from a cast featuring some of America’s

best actors including, of course, Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. Director Michael Curtiz received an Academy Award for his effort and also helped earn the film an Oscar for Best Picture. Despite all this, it is the performances of Bergman and Bogart that remain etched in the upper echelon of cinema. Bergman was never more beautiful, and, here, Bogart would create the image with which he will always be associated: the fedora-wearing, trench-coated loner. The two make for an infinitely-watchable couple. On Wednesday, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will perform the third Happy Hour at the Symphony program that will blend the music of American classical composer Aaron Copland with indie folk group Bon Iver. The Orchestra and conductor Steve Hackman will be performing Hackman’s arrangement fusing Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” and “Holocene” with Copland’s suite from “Appalachian Spring.” Created and directed by the ISO’s resident trio, Time for Three and Hackman, the Happy Hour at the Symphony concerts have been designed to bridge the wide gap between classical and popular music, allowing the listener to see the similarities and differences in each. Previous concerts in the series have featured performances by Time for Three, a young and exciting trio featuring double bassist Ranaan Meyer and violinists Zach DePue and Nick Kendall, as well as indie singer-songwriter My Brightest Diamond. In addition to the Orchestra, the 50-minute performance will also feature local vocalists Kristin Newborn, Katie Purifoy and Will Post. Newborn is most well-known for her role in and creation of the local sensation Slothpop in 2009. Purifoy became involved in the local music scene in 2010 with her band Jascha, and Post’s self-titled debut album just released last year, featuring his take on
