Baumgardt sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting Deputy Jake Pickett in 2018 By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Anthony Baumgardt requested the death penalty after he was charged with the murder of Boone County Sheriff’s Office CRIME Deputy Jake Pickett in March 2018, but he will instead spend the rest of his life in prison. Prosecutors planned to seek the death penalty, but when BCSO Sheriff Mike Nielsen announced a plea deal in April, Baumgardt changed his plea to guilty to Baumgardt avoid a death sentence. Baumgardt, 22, was sentenced to life in prison without parole May 29 in Boone County Superior Court by Judge Bruce Petit. He was charged with murder, resisting law enforcement and carrying a handgun without a license. Pickett, 34, was a Zionsville resident. He was shot while in a foot pursuit of Baumgardt. At the time, Pickett was with his K-9 partner, Brik. Baumgardt also was shot in the pursuit. Pickett was the first BCSO deputy to be killed in the line of duty since 1935. Shortly after sentencing, Pickett’s wife, Jen Pickett, released a statement. A portion of the statement said Jen agreed with Baumgardt’s

A portion of the statement reads: “That shot you knowingly turned and fired that stole Jake from us is only one horrific, traumatic part of our story, but it will not be the whole story. When I think of our children’s future and the future that you stole from them, I will not allow you to take up any more of their lives with a death sentence that will drag on for 20-30 years with frequent hearings that will constantly reopen the

wound you created. My boys deserve better. I deserve better. And you do not deserve one more minute of our time or energy. You have stolen a future that was promised to us. You have stolen a father from two little boys. We promised to be a family to them and in one selfish act, you robbed them of a lifetime of happiness with their daddy. You have stolen their innocence. They now believe this world is full of evil murderers like you. Daily routines such as car rides to sporting events and bedtimes include conversations I should never have to have with children who recall graphic details of their father’s death ... details that include images of the bandage around Jake’s head, the bruising of his eyes, and the stillness of his body in the hospital bed as he laid there on life support.” The statement said she and her sons will continue to be strong. “But here is what you can never take from them. You cannot take their ability to rise up … and they will. They will succeed. They will move through the tragedy and heartache you created and will do so with courage and grace,” the statement read. “Jacob selflessly loved others, served others and cared for others. The man who admitted to painting Nazi symbols and setting a fire at Congregation Shaarey Tefilla in Carmel was COURTS sentenced May 20 to three years in prison. Nolan Brewer, 21, of Eminence, Ind., pleaded guilty to a federal hate crime for the July 28, 2018, incident. His wife, a minor, also was arrested for her role. The FBI and Carmel Police Dept. worked together to investigate the case. Brewer told FBI investigators he targeted the synagogue — which was more than 50 miles from his home — because it was “full of ethnic Jews.” Surveillance footage showed Brewer and his wife went to Walmart the day before the attack to buy red and black spray paint, Gatorade bottles and other items used to deface a dumpster enclosure and make homemade explosives. Investigators said Brewer and his wife parked more than a mile from the synagogue to avoid detection. They walked to the synagogue, carrying their supplies in a backpack and by hand. Their original plan was to break into the synagogue and set it on fire, but a witness said they were spooked by the surveillance system and decided not to enter. When the FBI arrested Brewer two weeks after the incident, he still had supplies for the attack in the trunk of his car. A friend of Brewer and his wife told investigators the couple said they wanted to burn down the rabbi’s house and were searching for other targets. Some of Brewer’s co-workers testified that he openly supported Nazism at work and bragged about the attack. After reviewing the evidence, U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Walton Pratt sentenced Brewer and imposed a $1,000 fine. She also ordered him to pay the synagogue $700.

Nolan eager to play with All-Stars By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Zionsville High School girls basketball player Maddie Nolan didn’t know if her goal of being an Indiana AllBASKETBALL Star had slipped away. Nolan averaged 13.6 points in just five games as a senior after suffering a left knee injury in early July. She returned in the final regular season game and helped the Eagles reach the regional before falling to Homestead. “Growing up in Indiana playing basketball, you always look up to the All-Stars and it’s a goal of every kid, I imagine,” Nolan said. “I was a little nervous with not playing a lot my senior season. I was glad they respected my past seasons and allowed me to be on the team. I know most of the girls (after) playing AAU or high school against them. I’m excited.” The Indiana Girls All-Stars will play Kentucky in the annual series in Louisville June 7 and at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis June 8. Nolan averaged 21.5 points and 5.8 rebounds as a junior, helping Zionsville reach the Class 4A state title game before losing to Warren Central.

As much as I enjoy idioms and goofy sayings, I hate it when no one seems to know where they came PLAIN TALK from. The other morning my grandson was up early and I said he looked bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. “I’m still asleep, and I don’t have a tail,” he muttered, grabbing a cereal bowl from the cabinet. A little digging in my dusty dictionary brought up “bright-eyed” as a reference in the mid-1500s to someone who was alert. Bushy-tailed, on the other hand, didn’t appear until 300 years later, and no one seems to know what it meant. The two phrases were first combined in 1912 by one William Lee Jenks when writing about his backyard in St. Clair County, Mich. “ … to see a wild pigeon, cherwink, fox sparrow, bobolink or bright-eyed bushytailed squirrel.” I’ve never been to that part of Michigan, but apparently local squirrels are known for their bushy tails. The squirrels in my yard tend to keep a low profile since a family of hawks lives in a tree just across the street, and hawks consider squirrel a delicacy, bushy-tailed or otherwise.

A little more digging found an 1894 British reference to bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as meaning, “right as rain”. The intent was to belabor the obvious. Apparently, “it’s always raining” in England. If something was right as rain, it was something you could depend on. Brits used the saying to refer to someone who had been ailing but was now back in action, “right as rain.” What if someone isn’t bright-eyed and bushy-tailed? Like my grandson in the morning. The dictionary says he might be dogtired, haggard, dead and buried, completely zonked, at the end of his tether or asleep at the switch. Watching him sluggishly spoon cereal into his mouth assured me he could be all of the above. Back in the 1800s, the British also used the phrase “right as ninepence.” It had two meanings: One referred to a coin worth, well, nine cents, and the other to a person lacking in intelligence. In other words, someone who wasn’t exactly bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Or right as rain. Ward Degler lives in Zionsville with his wife. Residents question increase in tax assessments The Peavlers recently purchased a house on Pine Street in the Village for $383,500. Soon after, they saw an increase of $84,400 in their structure value tax assessment. (Photo by Anna Skinner)

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Village resident Jamey Peavler acknowledges she typically doesn’t pay attention to her home’s tax assessment, which comes out of escrow. But when she and COVER STORY her husband, Josh, recently purchased a new home in the Village, she wanted to see the assessment when it arrived in early May. “It was the first one we got for this home, so I did want to (look). I was looking at it and saw it went up by $84,400,” she said. “I gasped.” Peavler previously lived on the north side of the Village and said it was common for her tax assessment to increase by $500 or $1,000 every few years, but she’s never experienced such a dramatic increase. “The first inquiry I made was with the neighbors, talking about theirs going up now,” she said. “Most people said their increase was related to land value. Property taxes are based on land value and structure value. The land value did not change. The structure value went up by $84,000, but we made no additions to our house.” Boone County Assessor Lisa Garoffolo said improvements don’t need to be made to a house for its structure value to

increase. “Indiana is a fair-market value state, so if you buy a house and you say it’s worth $600,000 and that’s what you pay for it, that’s what it’s worth. Houses built in the same time period would be considered,” Garoffolo said. “The Village is a good way to look at it because it’s eclectic. I remember my first year here 13 years ago I had a meeting with Village residents starting to tear down old houses to put up new, and I said your next door neighbor may not be in your neighborhood because their house is new and yours isn’t, so they would not be considered like houses (when assessed.)” Garoffolo said the Peavlers’ house on Pine Street was previously assessed at $287,600. When the Peavlers purchased the house for $383,500, that assessment rose to $372,000. The assessment factors in what the assessment of similar homes nearby are, a process called trending. Garoffolo said with regard to structure value, improvements don’t play a part. “Improvements is not improvements like you and I think of them,” she said. “It’s a term they used on state paperwork, improvements or structures, and improvements means structures like your house or garage. It doesn’t

mean you’ve done anything. The word improvement does not mean you improved anything, it just means your house, garage, patio, your things.” An assessor did not visit the Peavlers’ home before the increase. Garoffolo said an assessment can still increase without an assessor coming out to look at the property.

FILING AN APPEAL The Peavlers have until June 17 to file an appeal. Then, Boone County Assessor Lisa Garoffolo will have an informal meeting with them. “What happens next is, I will book an appointment for them for an informal hearing, and that’s with me, and they can bring in whatever they have to tell me,” Garoffolo said. Sometimes, if a resident is experiencing problems such as a leaking roof and they bring pictures for proof, the assessment can decrease. However, other times when an appeal is filed, the assessment can actually increase. “It depends. When you file an appeal, it can go up, it can go down, it can stay the same,” Garoffolo said.

ESSAY

LETTER Stamp Out Hunger succeeds again

Willing learners Commentary by Terry Anker So much of our lives is determined by social order. We wake by alarm or with the rising sun from our pillowed beds to take hot, daily showers, with all sort and manner of soaps and creams. Then comes coffee. Perhaps we make our own. Perhaps we meander to the local shop to enjoy the collective ritual of order, wait, enjoy. Regardless the methodology, we behave very nearly identically to most like us. A few may prefer sleeping in a bit more or tea rather than coffee. But, for the greater part of the whole, we follow norms. Certainly, we can conceive of varied global exceptions. Countless, unequipped with flowing water, skip the daily bathing ritual. Notwithstanding, much of what we wrongly believe to be common to all humans is only inure to our defined social group. Even at home, many, whose background rendered them unequipped with the variances of these rules, are left behind. A local volunteer at a teen homeless shelter reported that their employment training starts not with resumebuilding but with basic instruction on use of alarm clocks, deodorant and appropriate language. Some years ago, our company operated a business with several warehouse employees. Many were young and uneducated but eager. Among the skills developed were basic banking (our primary lender opened accounts for each and met individually, time-management; and the notion that a foreman giving direction and the employee complying for compensation is not the same as the disrespect of personal servitude. Assuming our demands for conformity are justified, if others are willing to learn, why, so often, are we unwilling to teach? Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. Blueprint for a bloodless summer Commentary by Danielle Wilson Doo and I are preparing to hold our annual family meeting to hammer out the details for a homicide-free summer. Our four children will, of course, be invited HUMOR to share their thoughts, but that’s more a formality than an actual request for input. We anticipate a major throwdown over Xbox. Our boys will undoubtedly argue that they should be able to waste weeks at a time sniping virtual zombies, while we feel it might lead to serial-killer status. Decision? Two hours, max, a day. Buck up, kids! Also coming soon, the reinstatement of the “I’m Bored” jar, a repository for the monetary fines handed out to anyone muttering any derivative of the word “boring.” Proceeds will go to an end-of-summer Dairy Queen bonanza, and to prevent a “Bud Light Jar” phenomenon, the perp will be assigned some degrading task, like scrubbing the basement toilet with her toothbrush. Don’t

mess with Mom! And once again, to further enhance this summer’s salt-mine experience, “Amish Day” will occur weekly. It was proposed unwittingly seven years ago by our then 10-year old son who, at the aforementioned decision to limit electronic interaction, cried, “I’m not going all Amish!” Should have kept your mouth shut, Andrew, for you will indeed go Amish. No video games, computers, television, or phones for one whole day. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that our careful planning will result in a blissful summer vacation with minimum shanking. If not, at least I’ll have some solid article material! Peace out.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” -C.S. Lewis

Editor, On behalf of NALC Branch 888, I would like to sincerely thank you for your donations of food and help in making the annual 2019 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive another successful event this year. A lot of people stepped up and helped in a lot of ways to make this major event a tremendous success. I am sure they are all very much appreciative of our efforts at our local food pantries and churches. The generosity of our local communities is amazing, to say the least. This drive replenishes local food pantries in our communities, and we should all take pride in helping the less fortunate. The following is the amount of food in pounds that was collected and the beneficiaries: • Carmel: 21,020 pounds, Open Doors Food Pantry • Noblesville: 19,493, Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank • Fishers: 16,551, Delaware Township Trustee and Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank • Westfield: 7,172, Open Doors Food Pantry • Zionsville: 7,121, Zionsville Presbyterian Church Job well-done and thank you very much for your generosity! Ronnie Roush, NALC Branch 888 president

also benefited. Just what a guy needs when he’s tilling his 300 acres of corn: softened hands. Plus, after a session in the barn milking Elsie and shoveling manure, farmers found that their silky touch made their wives eager for romance. Dr. Hess was to become a very rich man. And a godfather several times over. The Dr. Hess enterprise later developed a lip balm called the Udder Stick. Can you think of a product whose name better says, “Spread that on my kisser?” The company Dr. Hess founded in 1898 has changed hands through the years. Those hands were always soft and delicate, but a few of them got caught in the cookie jar, so now ownership is back in the family, with the founder’s great-granddaughter. I’m working on a new toothpaste for guys and am thinking of calling it Pig Paste. What a refreshing way to start a morning! And, after all, isn’t that what men want?

I received an email today with the subject: WHAT WOMEN WANT. I’m a sucker for anything that might make me a better husband. According to the ad, they want Dr. Hess Udder Ointment, a concoction created more than 100 years ago that makes your hands smooth and feet callus-free. I thought being sensitive, considerate and romantic was the key. This is how little I knew about the opposite sex. With a name like Udder Ointment, it should either be something you spread over that specific part of the bovine anatomy, or it should come from the cow’s udder. Vegetable oil comes from vegetables and baby oil is for babies. On the other hand, there’s Lucas Oil and Olive Oyl. I could make fun of both of those names, but I like my seats on the 40-yard line and I’d never antagonize a woman whose boyfriend has huge forearms. Dr. Hess introduced his original product to farmers who lamented that their cows’ udders were extremely raw and chapped. The farmers applied this emollient cream to the cows’ semi-privates. Soon, it was discovered that those doing the milking

The value of a dollar — In the U.S., apparently not every dollar is equal. The value of $1 varies depending on where you go. According to new data compiled by 24/7 Wall Street from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), a dollar goes the furthest in America’s “poorest states,” such as Mississippi and Alabama. According to 24/7 Wall Street’s research, only four states (Rhode Island, Florida, Oregon and Delaware) are actually worth $1. Hawaii was by far the priciest state — with a $1 bill being worth only a measly $0.84. The warmweather state was also dubbed the most expensive state. Indiana ranked 11th with a value of $1.11 on the dollar. Source: Foxbusiness.com Indiana reports record labor force growth — Indiana’s labor force grew again in April, extending a record streak of improvement over the past year to hit another new peak last month. The Indiana Dept. of Workforce Development recently reported that the state’s labor force now stands at 3,415,523. The measure is considered an important indicator of economic growth because it counts both those who have a job or are actively searching for one. The new peak for the state is preliminary and could be revised later. Year over year, 37,495 more

Hoosiers have joined the labor force since April 2018. Also, Indiana’s labor force participation rate in April stood at 65.3 percent. The rate has now outperformed the national average (62.8 percent in April) for nearly five years (58 months). Indiana’s unemployment rate in April remained unchanged from the previous month, at 3.6 percent, and is even with the national rate, which dipped from 3.8 percent to 3.6 percent last month. Indiana’s jobless rate has decreased 7 percentage points since July 2009—the high point of unemployment in Indiana. That ranks Indiana 10th in the U.S. for biggest drop in state unemployment. Below is a breakdown of where Indiana ranks nationally in certain employment categories: • Second in manufacturing jobs added (116,500) since July 2009 • Fourth in manufacturing job growth (27.3 percent) since July 2009 • Eighth in construction job growth (6.9 percent) over the year • Eighth in private education and health services job growth (3.3 percent) over the year • The state is set to report May’s unemployment rate June 21. Creekside Middle School student keeps expanding acting career By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Yuvi Hecht has been interested in acting for as long as he can remember. “I was watching movies and I FILM said, ‘I want to be up there (on screen),’” Hecht said. “It sparked what I want to be when I’m older.” Hecht, who will be in seventh grade at Creekside Middle School in the fall, has acted in several short films and commercials in the past 1 1/2 years. He was born in Hong Kong and lived there for seven years before his family moved to Austria for three years. The family moved to Carmel in December 2017. Hecht’s short film “The Unicorn Sisters,” a drama from Starz TV Network, has won awards at several film festivals and is Oscar-eligible. “My role was the coolest kid in school,” he said. “We were in Hollywood for 10 days (in June 2018). We started working memorizing lines for four days. The filming took three days in LA Castle Studios. We had a premiere of the movie with red carpet, the whole nine yards.” The 10 days in Hollywood included a workshop. His sister, Tamar, 9, also had a small part in “The Unicorn Sisters.” The film included two professional actors and an actress. “It was filmed in a real studio,” his mother Hadas Hecht said. “It was a nice dive into the industry.” Hecht completed filming of the short film “Imp ” in Chicago this spring. “Most of the films have been horror, dark, dying or getting shot,” Hecht said. Hecht has acted in a comedy film, “Boy on the Bench,” which was filmed in Chicago. Hecht has been managed by Carmelbased Wallflower Pictures for the past several months. “They’re helping develop my acting career,” he said. Hecht also has done some modeling and trained at John Casablancas Modeling and Career Center. When he was younger in

Posh Picnic set for June 15 editorial@youarecurrent.com The Posh Picnic is set from 7 to 11 p.m. June 15 on the front lawn of Coxhall Mansion in Carmel. The mansion is at the corner of 116th Street and Towne Road. The evening involves each table of guests designing their own tablescape with place settings; preparing a picnic dinner and drinks with table guests; dancing to the music of Free but Not Cheap; and a raffle. Tables for eight to 10 guests will be provided along with white tablecloths. Tables of fewer than eight guests may be placed with other guests if you are interested in combining your table. Contact information should be provided to work out table theme or other plans. Transportation will be provided from the parking lot to and from the picnic area to help picnic guests with picnic items. Cost is $50 per person. For more, contact John Scott Foster at johnscottfoster@friendshcp.org or poshpicnic.org for reservations.

Hong Kong, he was featured in Hugo Boss advertisements. “I got into runway modeling and had a few photo shoots,” he said. “So, I just started with modeling, but I’m mostly focused on acting.” Hecht was more into sports when he was younger. His parents are from Israel. Hecht speaks Hebrew, German and English. “He was training in the Brazilian martial arts, capoeira,” Hadas said. “Here in the United States, it’s easier to follow your dream as an actor because there are so many more opportunities. We got into this adventure with Starz TV network. That’s when he realized this is what he wanted to do. He was playing soccer before for the Indiana Fire. I told him he had to make a choice. That’s when he realized this is what he wants to do.” Hecht gave up soccer in the summer

of 2018. His acting so impressed one film company that it added a part for him. “I auditioned for a part where I was a 14- or 15-year-old,” Hecht said. “I was really emotional, and they came back in and loved it. I was too young for the role, but they created a new role for me.” The short film raised awareness for anti-bullying and suicide prevention. “It was a classroom of 14- and 15-yearolds, so they added a family for one of the kids,” Wallflowers Pictures President Trey Burton said. His mother was happy to turn over managing his career so she could concentrate on finishing her doctorate in clinical psychology. Her husband, Ohad, is CEO of a software company in Indianapolis. Previously, Hecht’s mother managed his YouTube and social media accounts. For more, visit yuvihecht.com.

Add chicken to the Upland Nachos for $3. (Photo by Anna Skinner)

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 820 E. 116th St., Carmel What to get: Upland Nachos Price: $8.50 Anna’s take: Upland Carmel Tap House is one of my favorites because its food is exceptional, the atmosphere is relaxing and the beer is always good. My go-to item is the Upland Nachos, which layers cheddar-jack cheese, fresh jalapenos, diced tomatoes and black beans on top of blue corn tortilla chips. It’s served with a side of tomato-jalapeno salsa. I always add spicy

chicken for an additional $3. Diners also have the option to add Southwest tofu, pulled pork, spicy beef or seitan nuggets. Guacamole or sour cream are available for an additional 75 cents. Nachos are listed under the starters portion of the menu, but if you’re not sharing, one order is plenty for a full meal. Suggested pairings: My beer of choice is the Upland Wheat, brewed with organic coriander and orange peel. It’s light and a bit tart.

Behind bars: Jammy Dodger Get it at Ukiyo, Broad Ripple Ingredients: 1 oz. Rekya Vodka, 1 oz. Winter Warrior Sake, .5 oz. blueberry, blackberry, raspberry jam, a squeeze of fresh lime juice, .5 oz. sweet vermouth, lemon swath Directions: Shake ingredients together with ice, strain into a glass and garnish with a lemon swath.

Blueprint for Improvement: A kitchen makeover on the Monon Commentary by Larry Greene

Before

Background: Built in 2008, this Carmel townhome is beautifully nestled on the Monon Trail.

THE CHALLENGE The homeowner recently purchased this townhome and wanted to remodel before moving in. The kitchen and dining room were separated by a wall with a passthrough opening. The goal was to remove the wall to open the space while not losing any functionality or space in the new design.

After

THE SOLUTION Removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room made the entire first floor appear dramatically more open and bright. 1. The existing cabinetry was in great condition; it was revitalized with new paint and hardware. The wine rack was custom-built to fit the cabinet opening. 2. The original kitchen had a triangular island; the new one features more seating and storage. The navy blue finish is fresh and stylish. 3. Canatha: City of the Decapolis Commentary by Don Knebel Qanawat, previously called Canatha, was once the most important city in an area in southwest Syria known as Jabal al-Druze. Its remarkable ruins reflect TRAVEL the city’s importance to Romans and early Christians. Canatha/Qanawat is on the western slope of a volcanic plateau halfway between Damascus and Amman, both among the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Canatha is probably the Biblical Kenath, captured for the Israelites by Nobah, a Manassite. In 63 B.C., Roman Gen. Pompey conquered the surrounding area and made Canatha, along with Damascus and Amman (Philadelphia), one of the cities of the Decapolis. These 10 autonomous cities took on the look of Rome, with column-lined streets, baths, temples and theaters. According to the Bible, many followers of Jesus came from the Decapolis, dominated at the time by Gentiles. By the fourth century, Canatha was the seat of a Christian bishop and a popular pilgrimage destination. Bishop Theodosius of Canatha attended the Council of Chalcedon in 451 A.D., called to decide the nature of Jesus. When the Muslims conquered the area in the seventh century, Canatha began to decline and was largely abandoned by the 18th century. Today, Qanawat has a population of approximately 8,000, most of the residents Druze, a minority religious group for whom the surrounding region was named. A 300-acre site surrounded by the city includes a number of partially re-

constructed structures from the Roman and early Christian eras, including a Roman cistern, a theater, a nymphaeum and temples to local and Roman gods. The most famous ruin, called El-Sarai or Seraya, was built as a Roman temple in the second century and features an atrium with 18 columns and a colonnaded portico. The 70-foot-long building was converted to a Christian basilica in the fourth century. Reflecting its importance to Christians, El-Serai includes a Greek-inscribed stone sarcophagus displaying a cross. Don Knebel is a local resident who works for Barnes & Thornburg LLP. DISPATCHES History of wedding traditions — Many wedding traditions have disturbing origins. Brides first donned veils to prevent the groom from changing his mind about the marriage if he didn’t like her face, and the garter toss harkens back to the days when guests helped disrobe brides shortly after the vows were exchanged. Modern couples may not give much thought to where they stand at the altar, but the traditional placement—the bride standing on the left side and the groom standing on the right — has a dark origin story of its own. The reason couples stand where they do is a relic of “marriage by capture,” according to Reader’s Digest. In early European history, a groom would sometimes literally “take a wife” against her will, the will of her family, or both. A man would kidnap a woman from her home with his groomsmen there to fight off anyone who tried to stop them. At the actual wedding, the best man — a.k.a. the man with the best sword skills — would stand by the groom ready to jump to his defense in case any uninvited visitors arrived. The groom had to be prepared to battle angry soon-to-be in-laws as well. Because most people are right-handed, the groom starting standing at the right side of the altar so that his right arm would be free to draw his sword at a moment’s notice. Well, it’s all well and good Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt According to G.K. Chesterton, “The word ‘good’ has many meanings. For example, if a man were to shoot GRAMMAR GUY his grandmother at a range of five hundred yards, I should call him a good shot, but not necessarily a good man.” First of all, I have to tip my cap to Chesterton’s excellent use of the subjunctive case when he uses “were” in the second sentence. Secondly, “well” and “good” are often misunderstood in our language. “I know the difference between well and good,” your inner voice is probably yelling right now. Great — you get a gold star! Let’s review, shall we? Good is an adjective while well is an adverb (most of the time). We’ll get to the “most of the time” part in a second. Here’s what you already know about good and well. Good is an adjective. It should always be used to describe or modify nouns. For example: Nate is a good sportswriter. Well is (almost) always an adverb. Use it to modify a verb, adverb or an adjective. For example: He writes about the

Chiefs well. He does his job well. Now, it’s time to reconcile the confusing exceptions. Only use “well” as an adverb when using linking verbs (including be, look or feel) that describe the state of someone’s health. Monica wasn’t feeling well the time her hand got chopped off. Yesterday I was sick; today I am well. I don’t feel well because I drank some water from the dilapidated well. You get the idea. If we use “well” to describe someone’s health, we use “good” to describe someone’s emotional state of being. LeBron felt good about his decision to take his talents to Miami. Byron didn’t feel good after he lied to his kids about Santa. In these cases, we’re using “good” as an adverb. So, the next time someone asks you how you’re doing, you can say, “I’m doing good” or “I’m doing well.” Depending on how you choose to answer the question, it’s perfectly acceptable to say “well” or “good.” Curtis Honeycutt is a national award-winning, syndicated humor writer.
