Salon 01’s growth adds jobs to Carmel By Jordan Fischer • jordan@youarecurrent.com Salon 01 expanded its services last month, adding a spa and Central Indiana’s first “blow dry bar” on the Monon Level of its building. The expansion also includes the salon adding four additional full-time staff members, with a possible seven to 10 more parttime and full-time positions to come. “We are thrilled to be able to grow our business in a difficult economic environment,” said Micki Stirsman, creative director and owner of Salon 01. “It’s exciting to be filling positions to sat-

isfy a growing demand for these services. Carmel is a great place to do business and continues to build momentum fueling future growth.” Salon 01’s “blow dry bar” is a new salon concept popular in larger coastal cities, according to Stirsman. The bar will offer only shampoo and styling appointments. In a press release, Salon 01 said the bar is the “perfect answer to women’s quick-style needs.” Salon 01 is a high-end, full-service hair salon, located in a freestanding, 15,000-square-foot building at 200 City Center Dr. For more information, visit www.salon01.com or call 580-0101.

Hinkle Creek Friends Church, 21617 Hinkle Rd., in Noblesville celebrated its 175th anniversary last year, but the tale of the congregation begins all the way back in 1833. Settlers began moving into the Deming community at that time and homesteaded much of the land in this area. In 1905, remodeling of the building began following a revival service by Evangelist Carrie Taylor (pictured). During that remodeling, the Meeting House’s wall, which ran through the center of the room and divided worship areas between men and women and children, was removed. The candles that lit the church were replaced with coal oil lights and heating stoves were installed on both sides of the building. The old obscure glass windows were replaced with stained glass. People in the news

High visibility for a priestly spirit By Bob Walters • editorial@youarecurrent.com

When Father Anastasios Gounaris is installed as the Dean of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in New York City later this week, he’ll assume a highly visible ministry in a highly visible church. What Gounaris leaves behind at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Carmel is a highly appreciative congregation that has spiritually and visibly prospered during his 21 years of stewardship. What he will find in New York in some ways is the same, but also entirely new. “The job in a lot of ways won’t be that much different,” Gounaris says, noting that he will celebrate the Eucharist in the new church for the first time June 3. “I’ll be pastoring a church of about 500 families, which is about what we have now. What will be different is that the new church is the home of the Archbishop of [the entire United States]. It’s is difficult to leave, but exciting to look ahead.” “Father Taso,” who turns 55 on May 29, his wife Maria, and their two young daughters Eleni and Katrina arrived in Indianapolis in 1991 when the church was located at 4011 N. Pennsylvania St., Indianapolis. On Christmas Eve of 2008, the congregation moved into its newly built Carmel facility at 3500 W. 106th St. Dr. Dennis Dickos, a St.Vincent Health System cardiologist who is a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Church, was chairman of both the committee that helped bring Father Anastasios to Indianapolis, and of the building and fundraising committee that raised up the new Carmel church. “We love our priest in Carmel,” Dickos said, “but we are also very happy for him to broaden his ministry on the larger stage of the New York Cathedral. When the Archbishop (Demetrious) requested that he come to New York, it’s not something one can easily turn down.” Gounaris leaves a legacy not only of a caring ministry but also of increasing the visibility of the Orthodox Church. “We want Orthodoxy to be difficult to ignore,” he commented cheerfully in a recent interview, also noting that St. George’s Orthodox Church (Antiochian / Russian) is building a new church in Fishers on East 116th Street. Like Holy Trinity, it will reflect the Byzantine architecture so traditionally identified

Gounaris with the various Eastern Orthodox Churches. Dickos is taking the change at Holy Trinity Church in Carmel as in-stride as he can. He again is on the committee that will help bring in the new priest. “We had about two months with substitute priests before Father Anastasios arrived, and I expect that’s about what we’re looking at this time,” Dickos said. He explained that Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit (the Orthodox structure calls this person a “Metropolitan” rather than a “Bishop) will evaluate and assign a new priest with the input of the congregation. He expects the new priest to be in place by the end of summer. When Holy Trinity opened the Carmel campus in 2008, the church went from 19,000 square feet in the old building to 41,000 square feet in the new. Dickos notes that while the building is beautiful, its initial funding was ravaged by the recession, which slowed some elements of church completion, including appropriate Orthodox decoration and iconography. Those are elements that are rapidly coming back online, with new carvings, paintings and designs continually being unveiled. “Father Anastasios gave us a spiritual foundation and an enthusiasm to expand,” Dickos said. “That will always be a visible part of our congregation, and I have no doubt that will always be a visible part of his ministry, wherever he is.”

Carmel housing market showing rebound By Jordan Fischer • jordan@youarecurrent.com Numbers released last week by the Carmel Dept. of Community Services show the city’s housing market is sporting healthier numbers compared to this period last year. The market up-tick follows a statewide trend of increased housing sales and prices. According to numbers released by Carmel, the city saw a 130-percent increase in the total number of home construction permits issued between April 2011 and April 2012. Year-to-date figures also increased by 51 percent. The market improvement continues a trend of Carmel’s housing sector performing better than state and national levels. Nationally, Metrostudy, a national housing market research firm, predicted a 47-percent decrease in a 2009 report for that calendar year. Despite the prediction, Carmel/ Clay Township experienced a 61-percent increase in the number of total permits issued for new dwelling units between 2008 and 2009. “Carmel weathered the recession in recent years very well,” said Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard in a press release. “Businesses were still opening in Carmel and home sales have picked back up. Unlike cities that may have one large employer sustaining a majority of its residents, Carmel has a wide variety of businesses in various sectors allowing for a more stable economic environment. In addition, Carmel has worked very hard to improve access to the arts, expand our park and trail system, encourage education and build an excellent roadway network to attract businesses that provide professional jobs to our highly educated workforce.” More information about Carmel's and the state’s housing markets can be found online at www.indianaishome.com.

Special Sports program levels the playing field Commentary by Jeff Worrell Carmel Dads’ Club is an institution in this town. The CDC engine is powered by parents who want their children to be a part of a team sport experience. Jerry Newkirk is an example of a typical CDC parent. Jerry had two sons participating in the various sports offered, and he was a coach for their teams. But living next door to Jerry was a boy who couldn’t join in the fun with his sons due to physical limitations. So way back in 1985, Jerry decided to act. The results of his action means every year there are more winners than there might otherwise have been. Thanks to Jerry Newkirk, the Carmel Dads’ Club Special Sports Program was launched in 1985. Jerry oversaw its development and ran the program until 1993. That is when the Hutnicke family stepped up to offer their expertise. Frank Hutnicke ran the program until 1996 and his wife stepped up a year later and has been overseeing operations for the past 15 years. Carrie Hutnicke, with the help of so many, has successfully built a powerful program that offers an athletic opportunity to school age children in the Indianapolis area with physical and emotional disabilities. That first year, six kids gathered together to master their tee ball skills. This season, more than 175 athletes participate in tee ball, soccer, soapbox derby, tennis, volleyball, basketball and bowling. They master each sport by drill-

ing on the key skills necessary for each sport. Helping the kids each Saturday is a body of area high school students who volunteer their time to assist each athlete. Many of the athletes in the Special Sports Program require one-on-one coaching. In 2000, Rod Richardson, a local businessman and a previous subject of this column, decided to help raise money for an endowment to support the program. For the next eight years, Rod and Carrie labored to produce the Carmel Food & Wine Fest, which ended up netting enough money to create the Rod Richardson and Carrie Hutnicke Fund for Special Sports. The fund ensures the Special Sports Program will be free to all future participants forever. Just as Carmel Dads’ Club is a feeder program for athletes moving on to high school and college sports, the Special Sports Program is also a feeder. Every Saturday morning, special needs athletes wake up knowing they can be part of a team and contribute. With hard work, dedication and a sense of purpose, they are in the hunt for something greater, like a Special Olympics gold, silver or bronze medal.

Carmel granted permanent injunction against Double Apple Lounge By Jordan Fischer • jordan@youarecurrent.com Hamilton County Circuit Court Judge Paul Felix granted the city of Carmel a permanent injunction against the Double Apple Lounge Thursday. The injunction comes after the bar was cited twice this year for allowing minors into the bar, once in January and once in May. The City called as a witness Indiana State Excise Police Officer Steven Toleos, who stated that in July of 2011, he first became aware of issues at the Double Apple Lounge when a complaint was filed for the establishment having a person younger than 10 years old in the bar. Officer Toleos provided notice to the owners at that time that no one under 21 should ever be permitted in the bar. No further testimony was given, because at this point in the proceedings, defendants Miguel Angel Sarria and Gladys Bonita entered the courtroom and indicated to the court that they had no objection to the entering of not only a temporary, but permanent injunction against them and the Double Apple Lounge. The permanent injunction prohibits the Double Apple Lounge from ever operating again in the city of Carmel. “I wanted to send a strong message that we

A place to play Parks officials say dog owners’ requests for a park of their own may soon be granted

By Jordan Fischer • jordan@youarecurrent.com

ment of the Arts & Design District has made Central Park a good starting location to “work out the kinks” because of the high residential density in the area. “When we build a park … parks last hundreds of years,” Westermeier said. “When you build something that long term, you don’t move that fast. You make sure you’re building something that’s serving the needs of the area and what the needs of future generations will be.”

Carmel could begin construction of a long-awaited dog park as early as next year, according to parks and recreation officials. According to Mark Westermeier, director of Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation, officials have narrowed, possible locations to a spot along 116th Street in Central Park, which would put the park immediately behind an existing meeting house on the property, and adjacent to the Monon Trail and Community Center. Plans for a dog park, and the 116th Street location, were included in the original Central Park plan, according to City Councilwoman Lucy Snyder, but were held initially as city officials assessed the wetlands situation in the area. Still, the idea of a dog park never left the table. “Based upon what we’ve heard, it’s been pretty consistent that the community wants a dog park,” Westermeier said. “We’re underserved in this area when it comes to dog parks.” A final plan for the park, including a feasibility study done earlier this year, was presented to the Park Board on March 13, and received a favorable recommendation. “We had approval to move forward on it until we got some information from the scouting community that they used that area more than they had permits for,” Westermeier said. “So before we move forward, we want to make sure we’re serving the community as best as possible. Right now we have a lot of information to wade through, and we want to make sure we get as much community input as possible.” But, Westermeier added, “There have been a lot more people in favor of that location than opposed.”

According to Westermeier, building a dog park in Carmel has been on the parks department’s radar for more than a decade. The project has been stalled by concerns over how the park would be funded, and worry about where to put it to best serve the community. In 2009, Carmel resident Julie Burns began an online petition for a dog park. Public support for the park continued to grow from there, as reported to Current by Michael Klitzing, CCPR’s www.currentincarmel.com

assistant director, in June 2011. That support led to a feasibility study and focus group, both of which were included in the final plan presented to the Park Board in March. While the long-term plan calls for as many as three dog parks in Carmel, Snyder and Westermeier said the burgeoning developCurrent in Carmel

With the busy summer season just starting for the parks department, Westermeier said he doesn’t expect any “clear-cut answers” on final details for the park until the beginning of fall. CCPR itself will be going through its regular five-year master plan process this year, which should allow details to be finalized for this and other potential dog parks, according to Westermeier. “Typically every time we’re going to build a park, there’s a master plan done that gets community input, elected official input,” he said. “We develop a concept as to what this park should be, what it needs to be. That becomes the basis of what should happen. Then you go into a design-build phase.” A plan prepared by the Schneider Corp. on behalf of CCPR would have the Central Park dog park encompass approximately 2.3 acres – enough space to hold 250 to 300 users. With an estimated $400,000 construction cost, the Schneider plan projects that 100 percent of park operations cost recovery is possible with 250 users at a $75 annual fee. The plan notes that dog park fees in central Indiana range from $50 to $75. Though the park will cater to Carmel’s canines, Westermeier says he and CCPR have continued working on it for so long because of the people who’ll hold the leashes. “Quite honestly, the thing about a dog park is that it’s not so much about dogs as it is about people,” he said. “It’s a place where people congregate with their dogs and socialize. As districts like the Art & Design District develop, it’ll be important to have facilities like this.” Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation is still seeking community input for the final dog park plan. The traffic games It is our position that arterial roadways need sensors installed at all traffic signals. Road improvements during the past decade have been phenomenal, and despite a growing population, congestion has been brilliantly curbed through lane expansions, roundabouts and simply good planning. What remains frustrating for motorists are traffic signals on the less traveled roads, where sensors have not been installed to operate the signals properly. They exist all over, but just to give one example of unnecessary congestion, it’s not uncommon to see a long line of cars eastbound on Smokey Row at the Gray Road signal waiting many minutes at a time while there is no traffic at all on Gray Road – which is also absent a right turn lane where there appears to be room for the installation of one. As traffic increases and efficiency also increases on major thoroughfares, we have to be mindful of what it can do to local intersections. While we demand infrastructure improvement, we must also be patient, as we do not want to put a large amount of expenditures on ourselves in these uncertain times. We must look at these improvements as investments in the cities and towns in which we live and ultimately the value of the properties within them.

All the right moves shut down Double Apple

Shift into neutral

Commentary by Terry Anker

The Indiana Humanities statewide organization’s mantra is “Think. Read. Talk.” It sets out to provide Hoosiers with opportunities to do just that – and in my view, it succeeds hands down. Recently, in collaboration with the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana Humanities brought celebrated and award-winning journalist Jim Lehrer to speak to an assembled crowd on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Not only did the sponsoring entities provide a pleasant and encouraging setting for participants to commune with other inquiring minds, but also Lehrer delivered an open and, at times, poignant dialogue about his years in the public eye and the changing morays of the American media-consuming public. Lehrer reported that, “Exhibiting absolute neutrality while showing judgment in deciding what the issues are,” is an essential ingredient in reporting. I was reminded of the famous closing line of another venerable newsman, Walter Cronkite, with his “and, that’s the way it is.”

Does this statement lead one to believe the maxim of “absolute neutrality”? Can one both filter and package the news at the same time as one claims to be impartial in its conveyance? News delivery entities have tremendous power. But while much of it is derived from what is seen on television or written on the pages of papers like this one, isn’t more power derived from what is withheld from public view? If Cronkite, Lehrer and others are deciding what is news and what is not, aren’t they determining what’s “the way it is”? Don’t they become a maker of history as much as they are a reporter of it? Can anyone hope to be “absolutely neutral”? And, do we really want them to be? Wouldn’t a superior approach be one where biases, political and otherwise, are simply known to all? Isn’t absolutely honest better than absolutely neutral?

By now, it has been well documented that the City of Carmel has been granted a permanent injunction against the Double Apple Lounge by Hamilton County Circuit Court Judge Paul Felix. That happened last Thursday, and it was, in our view, a highly appropriate move. The case involving having minors in the club, to us, was distasteful enough. It seems that the club’s ownership did things that fairly flew in the face of the laws governing such activities, and they did it multiple times. And then to hear the ownership missed the opening of its scheduled court appearance was icing on the cake. The club’s owners knew as far back as July 2011 that such nonsense would not be tolerated; state excise police told them so. Then, again in January, a similar directive was provided, and, as you may know, last month 17 minors were found to be in the establishment. That’s apparently what added up to the point where Carmel and Felix decided enough was enough. We don’t need or want that kind of activity in our city. There is enough squabbling about other items, mostly fiscal, that brings negative attention to us. That the owners didn’t object to the permanent injunction (when they finally showed up in Felix’s courtroom) sealed it in our minds. And so the Double Apple shall no longer be able to operate in Carmel, and since the liquor license is issued to the business, the owners would be required to apply for a new one if they ever wanted to do business in our city with another such entity. To those who facilitated the end of this nonsense, we offer congratulations.

United parental front Commentary by Danielle Wilson My husband and I started to get into it the other day; he accused me of undermining his parenting. But having learned my lesson from a recent argument, I calmly suggested we revisit the matter when he was in a better place (work had him majorly stressed) and I had reined in the urge to rip him a new one. But later, after I’d had some time to think about it, I realized he may have been right. Ugh. I hate it when he’s right. See what you think. For the past two summers, Doo has been dying to gets our kids up on water skis. His family has owned a lake cottage for nearly a century, and he grew up spending vacations in northern Indiana. The first go-round we had low expectations, and we were happy that a couple of our children gave it a try. Last year, however, Doo was adamant that each of them would at least make an attempt, and was disappointed when only our youngest managed to get up and semi-enjoy the experience. Our three older ones never tried again and have declined any further incentive, including cold hard cash and first saved in a house fire. So when Doo announced that he was going to make all of them ski this summer come hell or high water, I responded with a “Well, I’m not

going to let you force them. Then he got mad and called me an underminer, and here we are. I’ve written about this dilemma before. Under what circumstances do you make a kid try something, even when they aren’t interested or are too scared? I’m of the opinion that water skiing isn’t that big of deal. Who cares if they ever learn at all? But I also don’t share my husband’s beloved memories of growing up on a lake. If having our kids water ski is that important to Doo, shouldn’t it be important to me too? Regardless, we need to get on the same page and soon. We can disagree in private, but when we act in front of our kids, we need to present a unified front. That’s where the undermining comes into play, and the one thing that our kids pick up on immediately. They are truly pros at exploiting conflicting parental decisions. And Lord knows we’re already at a disadvantage number-wise; we can’t give them anymore ammunition! Summer is here my friends, and we must stand our ground. Peace out.

Home, home at the range Humor by Dick Wolfsie

When we log on to news Web sites, there’s a parade of catchy headlines motivating us to click to read more. One in particular on my AOL homepage really caught my eye: "Home Cooking Increases Longevity" I know what you are saying: “This is incredible! It can’t be true. Do you really still have an AOL account?” The article reports that people who cook up to five times a week at home were 47 percent more likely to still be alive after 10 years. This may be the dumbest study ever done. In 2002 researchers interviewed 1,800 people, age 65 and older and living in Taiwan, about their dietary habits. They called the seniors back this year to see how they were doing. Most of the people who had claimed to eat out at least 70 percent of the time could not be reached. Apparently they had died, or so said the scientists. I bet they were out for dinner when the phone rang at 6 p.m. Or, because they were all near 80, maybe some of them couldn’t get to the phone in time. Am I the only person to think of this stuff? But here’s the big flaw in the study. Those Taiwanese who claimed to be cooking at home were probably eating Chinese food just about

every night, weren’t they? They can call it “eating in,” if it makes them feel better, but here in the Wolfsie household, we call that take-out. I’m quite sure that data on the hazards of dining out were not available in the ’50s when I was growing up, which is why my mother was often heard saying to my father, “Would it kill us to go out for dinner once in a while?” Apparently Dad thought it would. I guess he was not only a cheapskate, but also a visionary. We were planning to go to Panera for a light salad and a bowl of soup this evening, followed by a brisk walk after eating. Instead, we stayed home, barbecued some ribs, finished off a quart of Ben and Jerry’s and sacked out in front of the TV. When Mary Ellen suggested we go out for a bite tomorrow evening instead, I reminded her that according to the research, it would be a real plus for the entire family if she prepared a home-cooked meal every night of the week. I believe I am quoting her response accurately: “You should live so long.”

For breast results, get implants and lift Commentary by Dr. Barry Eppley Q: I am a 34-year-old woman who has had two children. I am done having children and want to address the damage done to my breasts by pregnancy and breast-feeding. I want breast implants, but I don’t want a breast lift. I don’t want the scars from the lift, but I would be OK with small hidden scars. Is that reasonable? A: Unfortunately, there is a significant difference between what you need for a good breast result and what you want. You are not alone in this position, as many women need a breast lift but don’t want the scars. Too much sagging makes it difficult to get a good result using breast implants alone. In fact, implants without a lift is going to make your breasts look worse, not better. They will create a mound above the current level of your hanging breast tissue and will merely end up placing your nipple on the bottom half of the implants. It will just be trading into a different type of breast deformity. If you are not ready to accept scars as of yet, you can always have breast implants first and see if the results are acceptable. But ultimately, a breast lift is in your future if you want to make a significant breast appearance improvement. Q: My upper lip is substantially smaller than my lower lip. I have had several con-

sultations and the recommendations have ranged from injectable fillers, to implants, to a lip lift. I am confused by these conflicting recommendations. A: As you have discovered, there are a variety of lip enhancement procedures. In the end, they all have the same objective – making the pink vermilion of the lips more pronounced (increased vertical height and fullness). These procedures range from minimally invasive to surgical. As a general rule, most patients should start with injectable fillers, because this treatment is the simplest and is completely reversible. An injectable filler can tell you whether the existing size of your vermilion can be adequately inflated to achieve the look you want. If it does, then you can ponder whether fat injections or implants may be a better long-term solution. If expanding the existing vermilion is inadequate or produces an undesired look (duck lips), then the location of the vermilion needs to be removed. This is where vermilion advancements and lip lifts have a role to change the vermilion-skin junction and the amount of lip skin. Dr. Eppley is an Indianapolis board-certified plastic surgeon. By Christian Sorrell • christian@youarecurrent.com It was only 8 a.m., but already the Monon Greenway located between Carmel’s Palladium and Studio Theater bustled with the life and excitement of the Carmel Farmers Market. More than 60 local vendors readied their booths and were already taking orders. The range of items available was a bit overwhelming at first. It took my fiance and me two trips around all of the booths before we began to decide what to buy. We sampled Banana Butter by Preservation, whose booth was filled with jams and jellies of all kinds; Chocolate Mint Tea by Kei Tea, which was delicious and refreshing as the day’s heat continued to build; and Chicken, Red Grape and Cashew Salad by Daily Farms, which we couldn’t help but take home with us after tasting. Soon after our arrival, the crisp sound of live

music made its way from the Carmel Rotary Amphitheater in the middle of the greenway. After running into a friend who was volunteering for the market that morning, my fiance and I picked up a massive (and delicious) cinnamon roll for just $3 from Lisa’s Pies and took a seat near the band. Witch Hazel Valley People, one of many local bands scheduled to play throughout the farmers market’s five-month run, played a wonderful

The Carmel Farmers Market serves up fresh food and great entertainment brand of nostalgic country tunes richly supported by a wide variety of eclectic percussion instruments and a number of different vocalists. The band’s antiquated sound added to the atmosphere of the market, something that feels strangely old-fashioned in its own way. Children ran and played among the tables and throughout the greenway as the crowd continued to grow. In the end, the farmers market experience was a wonderful and unique one. It felt like a relic of the past blended perfectly with a forward-thinking sense of local responsibility and self-support. It had all of the fun and fanfare of a summer festival coupled with the affordability and ease of a trip to the grocery store. Where else can you buy a cinnamon roll from the woman who baked it, pick up some produce to take home, meet up with your friends and neighbors, take in great live music and still make it home before noon?

NIGHT & DAY Film review ‘Indie Game: The Movie’ showcases style and emotion in a growing industry Commentary by Christian Sorrell Since first making its debut at the 2012 Sundance film festival, “Indie Game: The Movie” has been taking the documentary scene by storm. Rave reviews for the film have been making the rounds for months, but unfortunately, most screenings were being held only at largescale film festivals outside the Midwest. The film was finally brought to Indiana and the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s Toby Theater thanks to the Indianapolis International Film Festival. The film, captured by Canadian first-time filmmakers Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky, follows the designers of a game titled “Super Meat Boy.” After two years of devoted and painstaking work, their game is on the eve of its release. Another developer Phil Fish and his game “FEZ” have been plagued with problems since the project began. After being delayed for a number of years, the film shows Fish’s latest progress in what he hopes to be his life’s work. Lastly, Jonathan Blow, creator of the indie mega hit “Braid,” describes what it was like to find success and how he plans to continue to create in the aftermath. “Indie Game: The Movie” is an extremely well made documentary that peers into the unique area of the art and entertainment industries that are video games. Through the struggles of these

independent game developers, we see that, like all great artists, they have devoted themselves entirely to their creation and that, above all, they create in order to express themselves better than they are able through traditional means. Whether you are a gamer yourself or just someone with a love of creativity and devotion on display, “Indie Game: The Movie” will speak to both your heart and your mind about the monumental task of making something all on your own.

Stable change

Commentary by David Cain

Building anything great takes momentum and perseverance. While change is always necessary, changing in the middle of building can be the end of an idea or, at least, short-circuit success. Let’s say you come up with a strategy or concept and then you begin building. As you are moving along, you continue to change your mind and tinker with it. With each tinker, momentum is lost. Whether you are building a house, building a cake or building a brand, each requires that you focus on execution and implementation. Ongoing change can lead to ongoing unraveling of any momentum you have. The easiest analogy to building a brand or simply capitalizing on a great idea is the development of a house. First, you have to find the perfect lot. Second, you have to conceive and design something that fits your lot and lifestyle. Third, you have to make decisions and then follow the process of building until it is all done. Changing your mind in the middle only derails things.

Some ideas take time to gain speed and be successful. All too often it’s easy to change course if success isn’t instant. And, even when success is immediate, it’s easy to fall in the trap of continuing to change in search of greater success. Funny thing about change – you can’t live with it and you can’t live without it. You can’t build with change; you can’t grow without it. It’s a fine line. While it takes a commitment to innovate and potentially change directions, it is equally important to remember that true leadership can often require you to stay the course and give ideas the opportunity to be successful. Leaders that continually change, tinker and tweak without giving some time for execution and implementation will never see ideas realize their full potential. Exposing the explicit Gospel UGLY ROOF STAINS? Commentary by Bob Walters

The most important thing to hear is the accurate, explicit Gospel message that Jesus Christ is Lord, savior, truth, life, creator and our way to God the Father. Yet how often do church preachers, Christian authors, TV preachers and other Christian message-bearers skip over the actual biblical, Gospel teaching of Christ? What is taught is something either more “relevant” to our modern cultural predilections or more “in line” with longstanding congregational expectations. The Apostle Paul had this problem in the first century, and we have it today. Paul battled pagans, Judaizers and others who “just didn’t get” the Gospel truth of Christ. Paul of course didn’t have New Testament scripture on hand or even an organized church. He did, however, have Damascus Road, profound faith, a towering intellect and live eyewitnesses to the ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus. Today we have the Bible available in thousands of languages, 2,000 years of scholarship and tradition, well-documented and time-tested philosophical development, thoughtful and well-organized churches everywhere … and plenty of congregations being taught something other than the explicit message of the Gospel. Thankfully, savvy Dallas preacher Matt Chandler has written “The Explicit Gospel,” a book

I’ve begun reading that is scratching a particular itch I’ve long suffered. Chandler opens by describing the all-toocommon absence of the preaching and teaching of the real, accurate, biblical, “explicit” Gospel of Jesus Christ. In some cases, Chandler charitably suggests this might be because ministers assume their congregants already know the Gospels so they preach on other subjects. But Chandler also very accurately nails the self-help, culturally sensitive and PC obeisant preaching of those who think the Gospel is too controversial or unbelievable to draw a crowd, hold its attention or hasten a tithe. Chandler’s point is: Teach the real Gospel. Do it now. My “itch” is seeing people everywhere “substitute worshipping” something other than Christ. In the secular world it may be money, power, fame, education, family, sports, sex or many other things. Among believers, we see all that plus Christians making the mistake of worshipping a specific church, a pastor, a style of worship, a ministry or a hundred other things that are peripheral to the center of Christian worship. As we all know, that center is Jesus Christ, and his message is in the Gospels.

Take Facebook fee rumors lightly Commentary by Ken Colburn I heard Facebook is going to start charging business pages a fee. Is this just a rumor? – Nancy With the recent high-profile IPO of Facebook, there are a lot of rumors about what is going to happen. While it’s certainly possible that Facebook could charge for use of their network down the road (and if they did, it would most likely be business pages first), there is nothing official that would suggest that it’s going to happen. At this point in time, the only charge that a business page will incur from Facebook is to place an advertisement on the network or use its “sponsored stories” option. Facebook has a unique way to target users for advertisers, because they have so much valuable information about who we are and what we like and half of us use the network every day. Ads can be targeted based on any combination of location, language, education, work, age, gender, relationship status, likes and interests. Businesses can also use the “sponsored stories” option to have posts or interactions show up on more news streams. By default, Facebook only shows you items in

your news feed that are from friends that you are actively interacting with or posts that have gotten a lot of likes or comments by your friends. “Sponsored stories” let business pages bypass the normal algorithm and have their posts show up on more new feeds, which means more people will see it. At the moment, the majority of the revenue generated by Facebook is from this type of advertising, but it isn’t enough to justify its current valuation, which is why the rumors of new fees have cranked up again. These types of rumors aren’t anything new and have been circulating for years. They tend to pop up every time something significant changes within the network or there is discussion about new projects at Facebook. Now that Facebook is a publicly traded company, expect to see more stories about new feebased offerings and expect to see more hoaxes claiming that what you get for free today will be a pay service tomorrow.

Design Room 'makeovers' for less than $99 INSIDE & OUT

Design by Vicky Earley Not all interior design projects require a home equity loan. The following is a list of just a few of the tricks of the trade – guaranteed to improve any room – that will result in a cash register receipt of $99 or less! Update the paint: Paint a room a warm shade of black for drama. Requirements: Two to three gallons of quality paint, brushes, rollers and nonstick tape. Cost: $99 Float your furniture: Reposition the sofa away from the wall and cluster the chairs for conversation areas. Define the space with an area rug. Requirements: A willingness to embrace the nontraditional and a strong back. Cost: Free Remove visual clutter: Remove stacks of magazines, remove shelf after shelf of family photos in assorted frames, store half of current “knick knacks” and remove school art from the refrigerator. Requirements: Enough emotional security to allow such items to be stored out of sight. Cost: Free Wall art: Select a large gallery-wrapped art canvas (no staples showing on sides) and finish by stapling a fabulous piece of fabric from the under side. Cost: $45 and up. Or, using a large gallery-wrapped frame, create art with the same paint used for the walls.

Simply pour watered down paint on flat canvas and paint to move freely. After one color is dry, use a second, utilizing the same technique. More colors can be squiggled and swirled by applying paint with a squeeze bottle. Grocery store accent color: Requirement: Fill a silver dish with clementines for an immediate dash of brilliant orange! Cost: $10-$20. The purge: Remove all accessories from a room and consider the “bones.” Shop for a few fresh pieces with the bare room in mind. Before returning old accessories, place the new ones. Add only the best of the old ones to the mix.Cost: $99, if budget was intact New lamp with great shade: Lamps are like new shoes – they always make a room feel better. Look for great lampshades rather than selecting on the merits of the base alone. Cost: $99 Permanent silk plants are not forever: Fill the vertical void in height of a retired silk ficus tree with bamboo sticks in an urn. Celebrating Summer at the CarmelFest KidZone

by Cindy Roberts-Greiner The KidZone - located just south of the Carmel Courthouse - will be decked out in red & white striped tents, providing the nostalgic feel of carnivals from days-gone-by...when we were all young at heart. The kid-focused area will be buzzing with attractions, rides, games, strolling characters and an entertaining performance stage. The variety of family fun options includes the ever-popular Eurobungy, pony rides, bouncy inflatables, boat rides, a petting zoo, and more. KidZone Director, Peter Primason, is proud to announce, "This year's CarmelFest petting zoo will feature the Guinness Book of World Records smallest buffalo". (You have to see it to believe it.) Make a plan to enjoy a show at the KidZone community stage – featuring host (and local magician) CR Ryan. The stage presentations will kick off on both July 3rd & 4th at 1 pm with Master Yoos Tae Kwando Demonstration - where audience participation is a must. You’ll definitely want to meet “Python Pam” at Indiana Jim’s Reptile Experience on stage July 3rd at 2 & 5 pm. Entertainment continues throughout the festival with CR Ryan’s Magical Moments, KidsZ Dance Party, Carmel Dance Team. Ciley Myrus. Kids Ballroom Dancing presented by the International Talent Academy and hip-hop with the Sho’Time Dancers. You’ll have 3 chances to see “CYT Tour Group 2012: Youth Expression” shows on July 3rd at 3 pm and July 4th at 3 & 6 pm. Whether you are enjoying rides, playing games, visiting displays or viewing the performances – you are sure to have a fantastic time in the CarmelFest KidZone. For details on the complete KidZone schedule and all the events at CarmelFest visit us on the web at www.CarmelFest.net, join us on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/CarmelFest, or send a Tweet to @CarmelFestNews.

art Sun-worshipping plants: knockout rose, knee-high Russian sage, blue junipers and moonbeam coreopsis.

Don't fight the site with landscaping Landscaping by Randy Sorrell Have you ever noticed there seems to be an abundance of yews and boxwood in residential landscapes? Lots of knockout roses, lilies and ornamental grasses, too. Why is that? They are survivors! Right plant/right place While most of us like the idea of fiddling in our landscape beds, the reality is that time and sore knees prompt us to prefer low-maintenance plantings or a service that handles those irritants for us. Growers are responding with beauties that require little pruning, no special ointments and limited watering. The most critical element of our low maintenance dream is planting the right plant in the right place. Contrary to popular practice, burning bushes that mature at 10-feet-by-10-feet have no place squeezed by the front door. Also, Riverbirch trees planted three feet off the corner of the house will eventually need lots of heavy pruning. Don’t fight the site This is one of my favorite sayings and refers to Careful – Vinyl siding is known for its durability, but it’s not indestructible. It still needs washing to maintain its life, and you’d be amazed at how many people weaken it by grilling too close to an exterior wall. - almanac.com

the simplicity of marrying soil conditions with plant preferences. Got a back yard swale that tends to hold water and stay moist for a while? There is a thriving list of plants that would love for you to adopt them (trees: maples, serviceberry, honey locust, swamp oak. shrubs: chokerry, summersweet, viburnums, bayberry). A quick Google search will offer a healthy list for just about any condition, but check with your local landscape dude for confirmation. Yes, there are other evergreens besides yews and boxwood. When site conditions allow, it’s difficult to beat the glossy intrigue of a princess holly that produces clusters of colorful red berries in the late fall and winter. Just remember to choose the “right plant for the right place” and “don’t fight the site.” Randy Sorrell is president of SURROUNDINGS by NatureWorks+, a Carmel home improvement firm. He may be reached at 679-2565, randy@choosesurroundings.com or www.choosesurroundings.com.

Simple – Gathering clear glass bottles and picking vivid green plants creates an eye-catching piece to put anywhere in your house. Stagger jars through height and weight and your room has a whole new angle. - bhg.com

INSIDE & OUT

Indoors

Here come the tiles Commentary by David Decker

With spring flowers come new … showers – at least when it concerns thoughts of renovating an older space to give the house a fresh or new feel. Many think the kitchen or the bathroom is the best place to begin, as those rooms typically see the most daily use and foot traffic, and therefore set the tone for the overall feel of the home. I recently had the opportunity to attend the 2012 “Coverings” showcase event in Orlando, which brings thousands of vendors and manufacturers together to showcase their newest product lines and innovative ideas when it comes to tile, flooring and other unique surface options. We are seeing larger square or rectangular tiles taking over the market in lieu of the smaller style that we here in Indiana have gotten accustomed to in the design sense. This more rectangular contemporary choice is giving way to tile and floor coverings that mimic the look and feel of real wood, which is ideal for those homeowners who love the look of a distressed floor that is more durable and water friendly in rooms such as the laundry room or bathroom. Matching adornments such as colorful glass mosaics and trim complete the sleek look and can instantly update your space. If you still are one to lean toward a more tra-

ditional feel and are not ready to take the leap toward a modern decor scheme, the good news is that the digital printing process of making the faux stone tiles that we commonly see has come a long way, and one almost has to feel and touch the tile to see if it is in fact real stone. This makes for a cost-effective alternative and very impressive installation. Whether it is modern and fashion forward you are seeking or just a small update to your current comfort style, it is always recommended that you gather some ideas and pictures of your vision and head to a professional, as they can save you money, time and of course provide direction to make the process as smooth as the new lines of tile themselves. David Decker is president of the Affordable Companies, which include Affordable Kitchens and Bathrooms and now Affordable Custom Flooring. They are based in Carmel (575-9540, www.theaffordablecompanies.com). E-mail home improvement questions to david.decker@theaffordablecompanies.com.
