Graduate profile: Alexa Pratt By Desiree Williams news@currentinfishers.com

A: I attended Indiana University in Bloomington from 2013 to 2017. I studied dietetics with minors in psychology and gender studies. While at IU, I was part of the Student Association of Nutrition and Dietetics as well as a peer mentor for the Body Project. I also helped found the first on-campus food pantry called the Crimson Cupboard.

Alexa Pratt, 24, is a Fishers resident and a Fishers High School graduate. She finished class EDUCATION requirements in December 2012, then spent one semester volunteering in a neonatal intensive care. She graduated in 2013. Q: What was your favorite subject in high school and why? A: I really enjoyed my art classes. I have always preferred 3-D art, so I took jewelry and ceramics classes. Because I was taking quite a few AP courses, these art classes were a welcome break in the middle of the day. I got to express myself creatively and use my hands to create some really fun pieces that I still have.

THANKS TO PETERMAN HEATING, COOLING AND PLUMBING!

The holidays are a busy time of year, from the hustle and bustle of shopping to the holiday gettogethers there’s no time for the heat in your home to be unreliable. Knock two things off your to do list this month by scheduling a free estimate to upgrade your HVAC equipment in your home and getting your choice of one of three gifts.

Q: Why did you choose dietetics? A: I chose to study nutrition because it allows me to combine my love of science and food with my desire to help others live happier and healthier lives. Q: What was your path post-graduation? A: I completed my dietetic internship, basically a residency that is required to become a registered dietitian, at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Conn. This was a yearlong program during which I worked full-time at the hospital while Pratt completing course work and additional projects in the community.

Q: Who has been your most influential teacher throughout school and why? A: Mr. Bradley Jackson. Not only was he my history teacher at Riverside Junior High, but he also was a mentor that I am so grateful to have had. I was lucky enough to also work with him while volunteering for National Junior Honor Society. He showed me the importance of putting others before yourself, and he helped me to grow as a person as I prepared for high school. He made an impact on my life that is hard to put into words, but anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing him knows how uniquely special he is. Q: Can you tell me about your collegiate experiences?

Q: Tell me more about your role as a registered dietitian. A: I provide nutrition counseling to people that could benefit from making lifestyle changes to help manage their conditions such as diabetes, coronary artery disease (and) GI conditions. Q: Do you have any advice for younger students? A: Seek out mentors in your field of interest, and don’t wait to start. It’s never too early to start learning from those who have experience and insight.

Team provides opportunity for special needs athletes By Renee Larr news@currentinfishers.com Sarah Gordon didn’t know much about hockey when her son, Carter, started playing it at age 6, but she was hoping it would be beneficial, on and off the ice. Carter, who was diagnosed on the autism spectrum at age HOCKEY 5, quickly learned the sport and loved it. Mom and son were happy with the results. “He always had difficulties with social interactions,” Sarah said. “His teachers would tell me he wouldn’t participate in groups, so I tried to get him in any activity or sport where he could get experience with groups of kids.” The Gordons had previously tried soccer, but it did not end well. Sarah then received an email from Carter’s teacher about a hockey program for children with special needs called Indy Twisters. “I thought, ‘Let’s just try this and we’ll see what happens,’” Sarah said. “I had no experience with hockey whatsoever. Carter was only 6, and I didn’t know anything about the sport, so I was a little worried because it’s a very physical sport.” But it went so well, it has become a regular part of the annual routine for Carter, who is now a sophomore at Fishers High School. “We got through the whole year, and I thought, ‘We tried it, and we’ll go on to something else,’” Sarah said. “Carter comes to me in the summer and says he can’t wait to play hockey. I told him that was great, but the season doesn’t start until October. He asked me about playing hockey every day from that June until October.” Carmel resident Steve Tofaute created the Indy Twisters hockey team in 2008 after hearing about a similar program. “My son went to a friend’s birthday party, and the child’s father had made a video of his brother’s special hockey team in Detroit,” Steve said. “He showed me the video, and when I

watched it, I knew I needed to do that here.” Tofaute then faced the monumental task of figuring out how to make it happen. “It took a while to figure out where we would be able to play and practice,” he said. “The other part was that I needed to figure out funding so I could have enough equipment. I wanted to make it free for these families of kids with special needs.” The team is comprised of 30 to 60 players. They range in age from 5 to 34. They never age out of the program. They’re placed on teams based on their ability. “This is not a unified sports program where you have players with special needs and those without,” Tofaute said. “These players all have special needs. They’re getting to play with other kids who are just like them. But when they come here, they’re just hockey players. They’re not kids with special needs.” The teammates aren’t the only ones who benefit. “Both my son and daughter have been able to coach for the team,” Tofaute said. “They’ve learned compassion and helping others. I’ve been able to model that for them.” The team practices every Sunday from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. at the Arctic Zone Iceplex in Westfield. Carter, for one, couldn’t wait for the season to start. “The coaches are nice, and it’s so much fun being there at practice,” Carter said. “I like coming back every year to see my friends.”

Brooke Wyatt works out of her family’s home basement. (Submitted photos)

Brooke Wyatt does all the marketing for her company, Rosie Boutique.

teen ceo By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com

Brooke Wyatt takes living in what Mayor Scott COVER STORY Fadness calls a “smart, vibrant and entrepreneurial city” quite seriously. The 17-year-old recently launched Rosie Boutique, an online jewelry and clothing business she runs out of the basement of her family’s Fishers’ home. Wyatt launched her business in February and operates it on three pillars: faith, passion and entrepreneurship. “I’m Catholic, and Rosie is short for Rosary. I’m really strong in my faith,” said Wyatt, who attends Holy Spirit Parish at Geist church. “I’m really passionate about makeup, jewelry, fashion and accessories. Entrepreneurship comes from when I was first starting my business. I couldn’t find anyone my age with a business or doing what I am doing.” When Wyatt began looking for other teens with businesses, she

found most who started their own business were male. “Not that boys don’t rock, but most were men,” she said. “Like teenagers with companies on YouTube, most of them were boys. Which is, you know, fine, but I still couldn’t find anyone my age that was a girl doing what I wanted to do.” Wyatt decided to change that and also be an inspiration for other young women looking to start their own business. “I’m really passionate about business and really passionate about entrepreneurship. I strive to show other women and girls my age that if I can do it, they can do it,” Wyatt said. In the early stages of operating her business, Wyatt said she learned as she went along. “Now, I do a bit of everything,” she said. “I take all my own pictures, I edit all my pictures, I do all the social media and marketing and editing for my website. I designed my website, imported everything, all of the above. As far as inventory, I’m my own buy-

er. I buy all my clothes, jewelry and any other items from big companies. I do everything as far as inventory and marketing and finances. “I look over all the money and budget how much to put into one product.” Wyatt, who said her business is profitable, describes Rosie Boutique as modern Bohemian but not “too hippy.” “It’s curated for the perfect modern woman,” she said, noting products are available for girls in middle school to adults. Most items are priced between $15 and $60. Besides online offerings, Rosie Boutique also sells items at Oak & Ivy Boutique, 8500 North St. Per her future, Wyatt wants to major in entrepreneurship and innovation at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. Her career goal is to own her own store. “I want to build this into a really big company, but right now I’m all about learning as I go,” she said. “I’m always learning, and the people in Fishers are so wonderful. I keep

learning from them. This is such a strong community of entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs want to help other entrepreneurs. They want to grow with each other.” For more, visit shoprosiebtq.com.

MEET BROOKE WYATT Age: 17 School: Senior at Hamilton Southeastern High School Plans for Rosie Boutique during college: “Keep it up. I’m planning to keep everything in big bins under my dorm room bed,” she said. “Wherever I go, Rosie is coming with me.” Interests outside Rosie Boutique: Academics, planning to start a YouTube channel, being with friends, attending church. Morning person or night owl: Both Favorite TV series: “Riverdale” Last book you read: “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.”

ESSAY

LETTER

Insatiable need

Wilson’s ‘commentary’ lacking

Commentary by Terry Anker American pop singer and sister of famed super group siblings The Jackson Five, Janet Jackson — Miss Jackson, if you’re nasty — rewrote and performed the 1986 hit song “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” casting some shade on her ex-husband, singer James DeBarge, and asserting a “strong” counter to what had been widely perceived as a sweet pop persona. At the time, she attributed the mood of the album to be one of self-defense. Whatever the motivation, the song has become, for some, at least, an anthem for demanding one’s due: “You may have been valuable to me in the past, but you need to be valuable to me now. If not, get out.” Perhaps it is inure to the human condition. We love those who seem to love us. OK, but how far can one take the notion? What can we reasonably expect, or even demand, from those with whom we are in relationships? Attention? Time? Physical appearance? Age? Gifts? Acquiescence? Priority? In business, our intentions are drawn up in contracts with end dates, exits and provisions for renegotiation. We do X and Y, they do A and B, and we decide if we still like the deal every 24 months. But, human interactions are more complicated. They rarely come with an end point. They always change, and we routinely fail to be rational. But is our need reasonable or is it entirely insatiable?

Waging war in tinseltown Commentary by Danielle Wilson Today’s the day, friends. The Wilson Tinsel War is about to begin. I’m watching my husband HUMOR Doo prepare our obscenely large Douglas fir for lights, ornaments and, yes, the highly controversial artificial aluminum gorgeousness that is holiday tinsel. See, 2019 is my year to decorate our 12-foot tannenbaum in the tradition of my youth. Luckily for our marriage, most of this Doo also enjoyed growing up. Employing fire-hazard, multi-colored ceramic lights, a hodge-podge of ornaments ranging from Waterford crystal to dry macaroni, we happily agree that the end product should be a gaudy narrative of our lives. Where we differ is the literal icing on the cake, and by that phrase I mean fake icicles on a tree. I grew up with a butt-load of tinsel covering every single reachable bough; he did not. And so for the past 20 years, in order to avoid copious

amounts of therapy, we have agreed on alternating. In 2018, I silently endured a naked conifer, sad and dark without that silvery ‘wow’ factor. This December, it’s Doo’s turn to suck it up. The problem is, he’s not quite as accepting of a Danielle Christmas as I am of a Doo one. And, he’s indoctrinated our sons into his stupid way of thinking. Luckily, I have the girls on my side, and the aforementioned boy children are still away at college. Hopefully, this means the Tinsel War will be less Antietam and more Treaty of Paris. Time will tell. I am waiting until the last possible moment to remind him, with photographic evidence, if necessary, that this is a tinsel year. Let the war begin! Peace out.

Editor, Current in Noblesville has been delivered to our mailbox for several years, as we have been a resident here since 1977. The contents for a periodical to serve a constituency should include news items, government information, editorials for subjects of interest to the constituency, entertainment notifications, local advertisements and other notices of interest to the constituency. The commentary by Danielle Wilson is lacking in redeemable quality due to the caustic comments about family and others being the crux of her “commentary.” Commentary consists of explanation, interpretation or illustration of legitimate subject matter, and this so-called commentary does none of this. Comedy and light-hearted articles are refreshing from time to time, but one’s personal ridiculous accounts of their life and criticism of others different from her is not commentary. This story began several years ago when the UPS truck pulled up to the curb at our house HUMOR and we wondered what Brown was going to do for us. We saw the driver struggle with a huge carton the size of a bigscreen TV. He maneuvered it to the front porch and left it leaning against the door. I went outside to look at it. “Who’s it for?” Mary Ellen asked. I checked the label and it was addressed to me, but those stickers can be misleading. Some of our credit cards are in my name, some are in Mary Ellen’s, so when a delivery is made, we are not sure who ordered it and who the gift is ultimately for. If the wrong person opens it, well, there goes the surprise meant for Christmas morning. “It says it’s for me,” I told her, “but I have absolutely no recollection of ordering anything so big. Maybe you

ordered it, Mary Ellen.” My wife thought for a moment, and so began the weirdest conversation in our 40-year marriage. “Dick, I know what it is. It’s that special item I mentioned two months ago that I wanted for Christmas. You said you found it in a catalog. Don’t you remember? I am so excited! Thank you.” “I have absolutely no idea what it is. Can you give me a hint?” “No, I can’t give you a hint. That would ruin the surprise.” “Ruin the surprise? The gift is for you! It’s supposed to be your surprise. But you already know what it is. I’m the one who doesn’t have a clue.” “It doesn’t seem right to tell you. That’s not in keeping with the spirit of giving, Dick.” It was driving me crazy that I had no memory of what I bought her. “Is it a high-tech item?” I asked. “Not really,” she said. “Do you plug it in?”

“No.” “Is it artwork?” “No, not even close. But I don’t want to play anymore. If you guess it, I’ll have nothing to look forward to on Christmas morning. I want to see the expression on your face when I open it.” Later that morning, when Mary Ellen went out grocery shopping, I opened the box. It was a really neat present. I’ve never been happier with something I bought my wife. Before Mary Ellen got home, I resealed it, then gift-wrapped it and placed it under the tree. Of course, now we both know what is in the package. It will still be a surprise on Christmas morning - as long as we can both keep a secret.

Seasonal brain changes in older adults – We’re used to seasonal weather changes, but research suggests that older adults’ brains also go through seasonal changes that make their brains act five years older, meaning five years slower, at certain times of year. Researchers at the University of Toronto analyzed health data on more than 3,000 people, age 70 to 90, from the U.S., Canada and France. Most were cognitively healthy, but some had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. On average, the ability to think, concentrate and remember was better in the late summer and early fall than in the winter and spring. The difference in cognition between winter-spring

and summer-fall was the equivalent of almost five years of brain age. The researchers dubbed this effect seasonal plasticity of cognition. Source: BottomLineInc.com Healthy holidays – With so many yummy treats on hand during the holiday season, it’s hard to resist splurging. The result is the much-dreaded holiday weight gain. One way to minimize that is to budget your calorie intake much the same way you would budget vacation spending. Be selective and indulge in small portions of truly special dishes and desserts. HSE grad, ex-Straight No Chaser member releases Christmas album By Sadie Hunter
sadie@youarecurrent.com For Ryan Ahlwardt, performing comes naturally. Since elementary school, he has taken to MUSIC the stage, but it was during his time as a student at Hamilton Southeastern High School that he became immersed in choir. With an impressive résumé and a background of performing worldwide with a cappella group Straight No Chaser, Ahlwardt has recorded a new Christmas album, “Indiana Ryan Ahlwardt Christmas.” Released last month, “Indiana Christmas” is filled with Ahlwardt’s versions and rearrangements of famous Christmas songs. The title track is an original written by Dan Ponce, founder of Straight No Chaser. Ponce wrote the song in 2008 for the group’s first Christmas album. “I got Dan’s blessing to record the song for my first solo Christmas album and named the entire project after the song,” Ahlwardt said. “Having called Indiana home for 27 years, I knew ‘Indiana Christmas’ was the perfect name for the album. I wanted the album to sound like how Indiana has always felt to me – home.” The album has 13 songs. Ahlwardt said his favorites, aside from “Indiana Christmas,” are “Hallelujah/O Holy Night” and a modernized version of “Auld Lang Syne,” which he co-wrote with Noblesville-based producer Matt Mellinger. As a senior at HSE in 1999, Ahlwardt auditioned for the then-Indiana University-based Straight No Chaser with a few of his choir

friends. He earned a spot in the group that would gain worldwide attention in December 2007 when a member of the group uploaded a video of their performance of “The 12 Days of Christmas” to an up-andcoming website, YouTube. The video became the most shared video of 2007 and caught the attention of Craig Kallman, CEO of Atlantic Records, who quickly signed the group to the label. “Our first album on Atlantic Records hit No. 1 on iTunes and has sold over 3 million copies to date,” Ahlwardt said. “As part of the professional group from 2008 to 2012, I was able to record an additional five albums, appear on two national PBS specials and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, perform on such iconic stages as the Royal Albert Hall in London, Hollywood Bowl in LA, and the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, and collaborate with such artists as Sara Bareilles, Barry Manilow, Take 6, Phil Collins and Stevie Wonder, to name a few.”

Ahlwardt left the group in 2012 to return to Fishers and lead the local chapter of Young Life, an outreach ministry for teenagers. He served in that position until 2018. Since then, he has worked as a full-time artist and vocalist, expanding his horizons to voice acting, working on projects for the Indianapolis Zoo, the state of Indiana and Eli Lilly. His voice also may be familiar to listeners of “Radio Theology,” a weekly show he co-hosts Sunday mornings on 99.5 WZPL. “Being a creative entrepreneur and small business owner in Fishers gives me the opportunity to provide for my family in one of the safest and most vibrant communities in America,” Ahlwardt said. “My personal and creative roots are here in Indiana, and I’m eager to see what the future holds for our family and the city and state we love to call home.” “Indiana Christmas” is available on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and other streaming services and also is available on CD at ryansongs.com.

MEET RYAN AHLWARDT Ahlwardt lives in Fishers with his wife, Lauren, and their two children, Olivia, 5, and Gus, 2. Olivia is featured on “Indiana Christmas” on the song “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” Lauren sings a duet on “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” The two met while singing a cappella at IU. They regularly perform at weddings, parties and corporate events with their seven-piece ’90s cover band, Mixtape. Ahlwardt graduated from HSE in 1999 and from IU in 2003. He attends Mercy Road Church in Carmel.

Still light on their feet By Rick Morwick rick@youarecurrent.com When Lori Mansell-Solinksi retired from teaching at age 70, she didn’t retire from ENTERTAINMENT life. Instead, she learned to tap dance and joined a dance troupe. A few years later, she created one of her own. Today, at age 90, she’s still tapping away. A Fishers resident, Mansell-Solinski is a founding member of Prime Time Follies of Carmel, a group of eight senior-age performers who entertain residents in senior living facilities in Carmel. The group features singers, dancers, a keyboard player and a soloist. “I moved to Indiana from California in 2003 after tap dancing in groups such as the Hot Flashes, and I wanted to start a group of volunteers to go out to senior facilities to ‘give back’ without charging for entertainment,” said Mansell-Solinski, who moved to Fishers two years ago with her husband, Ed Solinski, 87, who also is part of the

group. Created in 2003, Prime Time Follies of Carmel initially entertained at facilities in Carmel, Indianapolis, Westfield and other parts of Hamilton County. But in light of health challenges for some of the performers (the youngest is 67, the eldest is 92), the group now only performs at Carmel facilities Besides Mansell-Solinksi and her husband, the Prime Time Follies volunteers are Bonnie Kincaid, 92; Meredith Bovin, 67; Joyce Washburn, 87; Sandy Fortier, 69; Charles Alloy, 86; and Kathy Doyle, 71.

December is here, and I’ve got three delicious and versatile sparklers to suggest. While WINEderlust I have your attention, I’d also like to point out that bubbles should be enjoyed often and not reserved for special occasions. They are such a delicious addition to any meal, and at so many price points, there is no reason to skimp. • Here’s your party wine: Pizzolato Fields Prosecco Spumante, $14ish. Juicy but elegant with bright green apple, lemon and a bit of hazelnut. Nice and bubbly, and great as a starter or with food. • Your sweetish choice: Banfi Rosa Regale, approximately $17. This is a unique red sparkler made from Brachetto D’acqui. Subtle pink bubbles that smell like roses but taste like rasp-

berries and strawberries. If you are looking for a wine to go with chocolate dessert, you’ve found it. Balanced and soft but not too sweet. • The splurge: $40 Heidsieck Monopole Blue Top Brut. Toasty and buttery, with rich and heady flavors of white fruit. From one of the oldest houses in the Champagne region of France. Made of pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay grapes, this “blanc de noirs” is always a crowd-pleaser. Got a favorite that you think I should know about? Blueprint for Improvement: New hearth warms old Indy loft Commentary by Larry Greene

THE CHALLENGE This loft is in the Old Northside neighborhood of Indianapolis. Built in 1901, the building originally housed the Indianapolis Power & Light Co. The living room featured built-in cabinets and an electric fireplace that didn’t have much style. The owners wanted an update and a more modern feel to complement other updates around the home.

THE SOLUTION 1. A sleek electric fireplace with remote control access is decorative and functional. It’s installed above the floor for a better view from the sofas. 2. The hearth is constructed from quartz and runs the length of the wall and frames the fireplace. 3. The hearth features a wide overhang to add depth and mimics the sleek bulkhead above. 4. Floating walnut shelves with invisible mounting hardware replaced the dated built-in shelving. 5. The owners now have a beautiful and functional focal point in their living area. Off-target slangshots Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt

Jardin Majorelle in Marrakesh, Morroco. (Photo by Don Knebel)

Marrakesh’s exotically colorful garden Commentary by Don Knebel The Jardin Majorelle (Majorelle Garden) in Marrakesh, Morocco is a wonderland of exotic colors, TRAVEL sounds and smells like few other places in the world. Now one of the most visited sites in Morocco, it was once nearly destroyed. In about 1920, Jacques Majorelle, a French painter, arrived in Marrakesh, long known as the “Red City” because of its red sandstone buildings and walls. In 1923, Majorelle bought a 4-acre plot of land in Marrakesh and began building a garden. Until his death in Paris in 1962, Majorelle brought to his garden 135 plant species from five continents. He painted Moroccan scenes in a studio on the ground floor of a Cubist villa he built in the garden in the 1930s. Majorelle painted the villa and other structures of his garden in bright primary colors, the most common a vibrant shade of blue known as Bleu Majorettle that reminded him of the nearby Atlas Mountains. Through a combination of bad luck,

including a divorce and a serious automobile accident and exuberant spending, Majorelle was forced to sell his garden in 1961. When French designer Yves Saint-Laurent and his partner discovered Majorelle’s garden on a visit to Marrakesh in 1966, they immediately became fans, even though it was deteriorating. They added irrigation to the site and brought in another 165 plant species. When Saint-Laurent died in 2008, his ashes were scattered in the garden. Now operated by a charitable foundation, the Jardin Majorelle, with its dreamlike character, includes a museum dedicated to the Berbers, who established Marrakesh in 1062 and made it the capital of an empire that once stretched 1,900 miles from northwestern Africa to southern Spain. The next time you are in Marrakesh, stop by the Jardin Majorelle. Don Knebel is a local resident who works for Barnes & Thornburg LLP. For the full column visit donknebel.com. You may contact him at editorial@youarecurrent.com.

Let’s face it — the trajectory of our language is trending slangular (a word I’m GRAMMAR GUY confident I just invented). With the proliferation and pervasiveness of internet culture, slang is everywhere. You know this is true when your grandma comments that your new shoes are “on fleek.” What is slang, and how should we properly utilize it in our communication? It’s time to load up our slangshots to attempt to define slang. Slang is informal language spoken by a specific group of people. These words and phrases incubate among particular groups, whether they be teenagers, minority groups or certain geographical regions. Slang starts conversationally, whether or not it ever translates into written language. Using slang is a way for individuals to communicate with their own set of words that help them to identify as part of a group. Slang isn’t jargon. Jargon is language that applies to a particular professional group. For instance, you’ll hear tons of medical jargon in a TV hospital drama: “The patient has a localized, sub-therapeutic, idiopathic, epidermal pathogen that needs to be stabilized, stat!” To be honest, I have no idea what any of that means; however, since these seemingly foreign terms are specific to the medical community, they count as jargon, not slang.

Let’s walk through an incomplete recent history of slang with examples. In the ‘20s, if you called your sandwich the “bee’s knees” or “cat’s pajamas”, you’d be saying that it was a particularly good sandwich. In the 1950s, if you had a shiner (black eye), you might want to cover it up with a pair of shades (sunglasses). In the 1960s, you’d be bummed out (depressed) if a choice babe (pretty girl) rejected your advances. If you’re still telling people to “talk to the hand”, the 1990s called from their gigantic cellphone; they want their slang term for a scornful rejection of what someone has said back. Use slang in informal situations: In conversations, at parties, online and when communicating with people with whom you already have a well-developed rapport. Don’t use slang on your resume, in a job interview, in a Nobel prize acceptance speech, or in any kind of formal writing -- which includes business emails. Although I’m a fan of slang, you need to exercise caution when using it, especially in writing. A misplaced use of “off the chain” in the wrong context will not only lose you style points, but it could also hurt your chances of getting ahead at work.
