Director’s Foreword

Aspect Ratio represents an occasion to view the brilliant works of Koichi Yamamoto. In the long history of printmaking there are ideas and methods that always arise and reappear in different fashions. Generations of printmakers bring their own ideas and touches to centuries of practice. Koichi creates work that includes some of the most interesting processes. His in-depth study of printmaking methods and his interest in relationships between the environment and human beings create works that are striking to behold with the eye and create an imaginative beauty within our minds and memories.

I would like to thank Koichi Yamamoto for the opportunity to exhibit his work, Martin Azevedo for recommending Yamamoto’s work for exhibition at California State University, Stanislaus, the School of the Arts, California State University, Stanislaus for the catalog design, and Parks Printing for printing the catalog.

About the Artist

Koichi has worked in a variety of media ranging from meticulous copper engravings to large-scale monotypes and his prints explore issues of the sublime, memory, and atmosphere. He completed his BFA in 1992 at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon and then moved to Krakow, Poland where he produced work until 1994. Koichi next studied copper engravings at the Bratislava Academy of Fine Arts in Slovakia in 1995 and then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland the following year. He finally completed his MFA at the University of Alberta in Canada in 1999. Additionally, during the year 2000 Koichi worked as a textile designer in Fredericia, Denmark. He has exhibited internationally and taught at Utah State University and the University of Delaware. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. One of his other achievements is climbing to the top of Vulcan Cotopaxi (19,347’) in Ecuador.

Research Summary, January 5, 2018

The focus of my work is discovering process and variability in production. For the past 5 years I have been engaged with an intaglio printing process that I have developed called the Reflective Transfer Method.

In 2017, I had a wonderful opportunity to further explore and expand my graphic work using this method in a variety of residencies. My intention was to create various forms to understand the dynamic and power of wind, using intaglio print methods that I have been working with. I began the investigation on Kaua’i in the Hawaiian Islands to produce intaglio prints related to naval architecture. The second residency at the Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California took the work into the functional form of intaglio printed kites with traditional materials, such as bamboo from Hawaii and paper from Japan. The kites were flown in the wind of the Mojave Desert, where the behavior of those kites was then recorded. Finally, I explored Moorish architecture and its history in Spain and Morocco, making images utilizing the method of bisymmetry and combination. Producing in various locations, there were unintentional influences and curious discoveries from the journey. I share my discoveries in the images of this exhibit.
