ART DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S FOREWORD

Welcome to the Pacific features the latest works of Dean De Cocker. Created mostly during his recent sabbatical leave, the exhibition unveils De Cocker’s newest response to themes he has explored throughout his thirty year career as a professional artist. Drawn in equal measure to minimalist art and the heroic sacrifices made by the “Greatest Generation,” the artist’s quest has been to reconcile clean, hard, reductivist edges with the sensually rounded forms of WWII ships and fighter planes. De Cocker’s finely crafted, often nearly skeletal forms suggest the underlying structure of what remains in the aircraft boneyards of Southern California. In the exhibition, the geometric and organic forms are often lit so that cast shadows play on the wall behind them, becoming an inseparable partner to the objects. This intersection of the tangible and the intangible is Dean’s prayer for remembrance.

Welcome to the Pacific

Minimalist might be the most obvious label for the wall-sculptures of Dean De Cocker, an artist whose background, education, and exhibition activity are strongly rooted in the West Coast of California, particularly the Los Angeles area, but it fails to do justice to the scope of the artist’s practice and sensibilities.

The work remains orthodox in that it conceals all traces of the artist’s activity, however the relationship between production processes and finished product is largely transparent, in an homage to industrial production techniques derived from mid-century aeronautical and automobile manufacture. This might still place such sculpture squarely within a formalist aesthetic were it not for the veiled personal associations that come through. Dean’s work operates on two levels simultaneously. On the one hand, it takes quasi-geometrical structures from the immediate environment of factory-built objects and conceptualizes them into purely formal solids, thus purging them of any sense of utility and identity the originals might possess. On the other hand, these forms evoke a subtle range of associations (often nostalgic) connected with meanings present in the objects or production methods that serve as their inspiration.

The fact that the associations are often embedded in nostalgia for Pacific theater World War II military scenarios creates a kind of poignancy based on a discord between the essentially comforting nature of rumination on a distant past and its disruption by the distressing content of that past. Dean’s father saw active service with the Seabees in the South Pacific and the over-arching title for the artist’s work is gleaned from military terminology. In this way, Dean’s sculptures read as a sort of confession, where the art reveals something beyond its formalist posture, where irony, even humor, are at least approached, largely through the tension between the severely impersonal methods of manufacture and the personal associations that seep out despite them.

We shouldn’t make too much of this, the titles merely alert us to one possible level of reference among many—others might include Eamesian design principles and some of the symbolic forms in Kachina dolls of which Dean has a substantial collection. Of potentially more enduring interest is the interplay between the enclosed volumes of his sculptures and their accompanying cast shadows deftly orchestrated through the way in which each of his installations is lit. This interplay serves to bridge the volumetric and the flat in a manner that parallels the bridging of his solids by the armature supports upon which they are pinioned and suspended in space.

A convincing case could be made for seeing Platonic archetypes. The cones suggesting Klansmen’s hoods or evoking P-40 War Hawks, the cylinders approximating telescopes or torpedo tubes, all playfully hint at a universe of ideal forms. Again, we need not make too much of this, it might just be a tease.

More significantly it seems that in many of the recent works (Navigational Markers, Night Sortie, Fear or Fury) the solids now cleave closer to the flat support of the wall from which they insistently but modestly project like orthogonals fleeing a single vanishing point. After launching with such determination they seem set on plotting a path closely parallel to that of the wall’s surface as if from some implicit awareness that in so doing they trace out their own shadows. Such a slight move, but it might signal signs of a fresh détente between sculpture and painting. In a piece like Turning Point the shadows become as visually dense as the cones projecting them so the boundary between the two is largely erased and the boundary between flatness and volume gently but insistently subverted. On both levels the dynamics of perspective are subtly reversed so that it now seems that the suspended objects are projected by their umbral counterparts.

The tracery of the shadows from the wire supports becomes more expansive and insistent than the original armatures, an effect that is shown off especially brilliantly in Navigational Markers. The smooth curves of the original appear incomplete without their more bloated partners. Then in Pacific Seal the objects shrink to mere functional blobs at the junctions between wire vectors, so now it is just the dance between the path of the shadows and their parent trajectories. In following this loose itinerary De Cocker has arrived at the same point at several different times from several different directions, a point at which nearly everything but the wall vanishes as the materiality of his forms quivers on the verge of dissolution.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is part of a continuing series, Blue Jackets Return. From the first winged-shaped structures to the current work, I have been exploring my interest in formal elements by transforming flat, two-dimensional surfaces into three-dimensional objects. I derive much of my inspiration from everyday objects such as mailboxes, aircraft structures, wings, propellers, heavy machinery and architectural works. These objects become conceptual elements, which I transform into drawings. Then, via different techniques of construction, I fabricate many objects of inner structures and outer coverings that create volumetric enclosures. In recent years, my interest in racecar fabrication and collecting vintage BMX bicycles from the 1970’s has led to subtle changes to my work’s structure and color. My work of drawings, prints and photographs come from objects that inspire me and places that I have visited that make me think about time and space. Some of my newest print/painting work involves my interest in World War I and II military ship camouflage.

The titles of my works are a result of my interest in the construction techniques of World War II aircraft and the battles fought in the South Pacific.

2016 marks 30 years that I have been an exhibiting artist, participating in over 50 solo exhibitions and over 150 group exhibitions with mention of my work in over 90 articles and reviews. I feel very lucky to have been able to make work that I enjoy and even luckier to have been able to share it with others.
