Welcome to the spring 2026 events season at Cal State Fullerton’s College of the Arts. We have been hard at work in every classroom, practice room, and studio across campus preparing to share new sounds and bold creativity with all of you. We are thrilled you are here.
Our students and their success form the core of our purpose in the College of the Arts but unlike their counterparts in other colleges, their paths are not solely formed through classroom learning; they are revealed in the moments when talent meets opportunity. Like when a dancer attends an intensive, or when a musician travels abroad on tour, or an actor or artist is mentored – this is where promise is transformed into possibility. The Dean’s Fund for Excellence gives students access to meaningful experiences like these and many more, including masterclasses, research opportunities, materials, and professional conferences. This spring semester is brimming with performances and exhibitions for all to enjoy –some that will make you laugh and others that will make you think. In the School of Music, Sibarg Ensemble, featuring our own Hessam Abedini, explores the musical intersections of Iranian music and jazz on February 20. In April, Benjamin Britten’s comic opera “Albert Herring” follows the shy, virtuous title character as he rebels against his prudish upbringing. Join us in the Little Theatre beginning March 5 for the musical “Once Upon a Mattress” – an uproarious sendup of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairytale, “The Princess and the Pea.” If you’re craving something completely different, Eugène Ionesco’s “Rhinoceros” opens March 19 to hold a mirror to the absurdity of mob mentality and the struggle to maintain individuality in the face of mass hysteria. And in late spring, our dancers and choreographers return to demonstrate their inimitable power and grace in “Spring Dance Theatre.”
Across the walkway from where you’re seated are the College of the Arts Galleries. You can still catch exhibitions from Soo Kim and Carol Caroompas until May, or stop by the galleries on Wednesdays for our bi-weekly Student Galleries opening receptions. They are always full of energy, and you might even find student artwork to purchase and take home!

Talich Quartet
The Talich Quartet, a group of musicians who are held in high regard and are considered to be one of the best string quartets, has been an emblem of the finest Czech musical tradition for numerous decades. Founded back in 1964 by none other than Jan Talich Sr. during his spell at the prestigious Prague Conservatory, the quartet was given the name of his uncle, the world-renowned chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic from 1919 to 1939, Václav Talich.
In the 1990s, a gradual and total shift in generations occurred in the quartet, which brought in a fresh lease of life to the ensemble while maintaining its rich heritage in concert and recording activities. It was then that Jan Talich Jr., the son of the founder, took up the mantle of the first violin.
The Talich Quartet has been a regular on the world stage, performing on many of the biggest podiums and taking part in global festivals. Their performance at prominent venues like the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York, le Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the illustrious Salle Gaveau in Paris, London’s famous Wigmore Hall, and Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam have garnered much acclaim.

ABOUT THE CONCERTMASTER
Violinist Ernest Salem is Professor of Music at California State University, Fullerton. He is also Area Coordinator for the String area at CSUF. He has performed in concerts and recitals across the United States and presented master classes at various universities, colleges and arts schools. Former university affiliations include appointments as a faculty member at Wichita State University, the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University and New Mexico State University.
Active as a freelance musician in the Los Angeles Area, Salem has performed with the Los Angeles Master Chorale Orchestra, Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony, Asia American Orchestra and South Coast Symphony. Formerly Concertmaster of the Wichita and Las Cruces Symphonies, he has also served as Principal Second of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra and Assistant Concertmaster of the Texas Chamber and Texas Opera Theater Orchestras.
As a chamber musician, Salem has been violinist with California State University, Fullerton’s Premiere Trio, first violinist with Wichita State’s Fairmount Quartet, a member of the College of St. Benedict’s Chamber Ensemble “Pastiche,” and violinist with New Mexico State’s Delphian Trio. He currently performs regularly as a chamber musician throughout Southern California.
Salem holds degrees from Michigan State University, the Univ. of Houston and the Univ. of Minnesota. Included among his teachers are Yfrah Neaman, Fredell Lack, and members of the Juilliard Quartet. In addition to performance activities, he has been published in the American String Teachers’ Journal & the Long Island Historical Journal.
ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR
Jan Talich is known nowadays an exceptional figure not only on the Czech cultural scene, but also internationally recognised. In his rich career he is able to connect, at the highest level, his knowledge and experiences of several professions. He performs as a soloist, chamber player, conductor and pedagogue the world-over.
Talich’s longest path has been that of his solo career. Whilst still at the Prague Academy he won the both national and international competitions. ( Zagreb 89 ). These helped him begin his solo career, which lasts until today. He has performed with piano partners such as Itamar Golan, Gottlieb Wallish, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Jean Bernard Pommier.
For five years Talich was a member of the Kubelík Trio, with whom he recorded the complete Czech writings for piano trio. He left to take up the post of first violinist of the Talich Quartet. The quartet, founded by his father in the year 1964, is one of the world’s best ensembles. During the 20 years of his time in the quartet they have performed regularly in the best concert halls of the world and have recorded tens of CDs.
In the last 15 years Talich started down the track of conducting. He began with Libor Pešek, Sir Charles Mackerass and Jiří Bělohlávek. In the year 1992 he founded the Talich Chamber Orchestra and at the present time he is the Chief conductor of the Jihočeské filharmonie. He is in demand as a conductor not only in the Czech Republic, but also in Europe and the USA.
Michael Chang In loving memory
Michael Chang was more than a distinguished violist - he was also a charismatic teacher and a loving family man. When he played his music, every note he sang through his viola was beautiful and with artistry. Although we (his students) were in awe of his musical abilities, what we will always remember are the gentle and inquisitive ways he nurtured us to be inspiring in our own ways. He knew exactly how to be our friend, but also to push us to keep our standards high in our music and in our character.
He was also, of course, a loving husband, brother, and son in his home life. But through his electrifying conversations, generosity at dinners, and charming laughter, he knew how to make anyone feel like family. We will never forget his warmth and his ability to share it with just about anyone he encountered.
His presence, kindness, and charisma made us feel loved, but also powerful. Although the musical lessons he taught us were indispensable, the most important lesson we learned was to be good to others, the way he was good to everyone in his life.
