Cornerstone MIAMI UNIVERSITY FINANCE AND BUSINESS SERVICES

Thank you to all who participated in the Workday Learn Staff Sustainability Training Module, Overview of Sustainability and Climate Action at Miami University.

After receiving a Peak Electrical Utility Alert email from Miami’s office of Energy Systems, staff: • Turned off lights (76%) • Unplugged electronics (52%) • Closed blinds (41%) • Adjusted temperature in their office (19%) • Took none of these actions (18%)

“We passed our goal of a 75% participation rate for all Oxford-based, non-academic staff for the new short course launched in January,” said Olivia Herron, director of sustainability.

The Overview of Sustainability and Climate Action at Miami University video was a collaboration by University Communications and Marketing and the Physical Facilities Department.

Climate action and sustainability are a priority of Miami University President Gregory Crawford. The 10-minute course includes an eight-minute video that takes you behind the scenes of Miami’s geothermal plant, energy systems transformations, recycling efforts, Natural Areas, and much more. Results from the short survey at the end will help us to better communicate Miami’s sustainability successes.

Jeff Shaver, Human Resources senior organization development consultant and a member of the Climate Action and Sustainability Council Faculty and Staff Engagement Working Group, led the effort to build the survey and course in Workday Learn.

STAFF SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING MODULE: HIGHLIGHTS, AND THANK YOU

Highlights from the survey include: How important is it to you that Miami University has committed to carbon neutrality by 2040? • 62% of respondents that it is very important (28%) or important (34%); only 7% rated it as not important Top four actions staff take to be more sustainable in their workplace/office: • Place recyclables in the provided recycle bins (91%) • Turn off lights when leaving the office (89%) • ‘Power down’ during breaks (70%) • Avoid printing when possible (70%)

“This is the first instance of embedding a survey directly into the Workday Learning platform. By doing so, we’re not only enhancing the learning experience but also empowering staff to engage more effectively in sustainability efforts,” Shaver said. All new staff members on the Oxford campus will have the opportunity to take the 10-minute course, which is Job Enrichment Credit eligible for 0.25 points. Thanks again to everyone who has taken the course! If you have not taken it and would like to, register for it on Workday Learn: Overview of Sustainability and Climate Action at Miami University.
