Acting Technique: Improv (Ages 8-15)

In this engaging class, students learn to identify the many actions necessary for a successful scene, including how to establish and enhance the root behavior of a character Be prepared to throw yourself into several days of fun and creativity!

Times: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (Ages 12-15)

1 - 4 p.m. (Ages 8-11)

Animation (Ages 11-15)

Students learn to animate digitally while engaging in the concepts and principles of animation. Emphasis is placed on squash-and-stretch, anticipation, exaggeration, and timing Technical focus includes pose-to-pose, keyframing, tweening, and animation cycles, as well as expression of emotion and gesture through movement with a variety of techniques and approaches. Students are able to create several short animated films throughout the class.

NEW COURSE: Art Portfolio Prep (Ages 11-15)

In Art Portfolio Prep, students build and organize artwork that showcase their creativity and skills. They learn how to refine selected pieces, explore new ideas, and thoughtfully choose and present their strongest work. By the end of the workshop, each student will leave with a solid start on a portfolio and a clear plan for continuing to develop it

NEW COURSE: Character & Prop Design (Ages 11-15)

In this course, students design characters and props using a combination of traditional drawing and Adobe Photoshop. Emphasis is placed on the concept art process, where ideas are explored through pre-production techniques such as ideation, visual research, thumbnail sketching, and silhouette development Throughout the course, students focus on visual storytelling, character re-designs, design principles, and the professional workflows used in the entertainment and game industries.

NEW COURSE: Clay Lab: Hand Building (Ages 8-13)

This course introduces students to foundational ceramic handbuilding techniques and surface decoration methods Students learn the skills necessary to create both functional and sculptural forms using coil, pinch, and slab construction processes. By experimenting with the clay, students build confidence in the creative process and leave with their own unique creations.

NEW COURSE: Clay Lab: Throwing (Ages 11-15)

This course introduces students to ceramic wheel-throwing techniques and surface decoration Students learn how to create functional ceramic forms on the potter’s wheel, including cylinders, bowls, and other vessel forms. Through practice, students gain skills including centering clay, controlling form, refining proportions, and developing craftsmanship.

Digital Creature Design (Ages 8-13)

This digital design class allows students to unlock their imaginations to create a unique and convincing digital creature. Students begin by developing the background of this creature; including its environment, diet, and relationship with other creatures, which will in turn influence and guide their overall design The skills explored in this class help students build stronger and more dynamic characters

Discover Art! (Ages 5-7)

This play-centered class is for our youngest students artists, ages 5-7. Students have the opportunity to explore many art genres and play in the following art forms: visual art, acting, singing, and dance

Drawing 101 (Ages 8-13)

In this introduction to drawing class, students create artwork based on real-life observation and imaginative design Using step-by-step methods and creative problem-solving, students explore different mediums and techniques for the purpose of building both their skill level and portfolio

Dungeons

& Dragons: A Beginner’s Guide to Adventure (Ages 12-15)

Are you brave enough to enter a world of dragons, monsters, druids, barbarians, and magicians? Are you ready to take your storytelling skills to a whole new realm? Join us as we enter the mysterious world of Dungeons & Dragons In this class, students learn the history, rules, and gameplay of Dungeons & Dragons. Students are encouraged to design and create their own character and try out being a Dungeon Master, culminating in a real campaign!

NEW COURSE: Fashion Design Lab (Ages 11-15)

Young designers jump into the world of fashion in this beginning-to-intermediate workshop that celebrates creativity and personal style Students learn the building blocks of fashion design through playful challenges that teach real techniques, including anatomy and fashion illustration, hand and machine sewing, dyeing, and embroidery techniques. Together, participants explore sustainability and transform everyday materials and old favorites into something spectacular

NEW COURSE: Filmmaking Workshop (Ages 11-15)

Lights! Camera! Action! In this class, students work together to make a complete short film in just one week. As a class, students write an original script and take that script through pre-production, production, and post-production. In the process, participants learn the fundamentals of filmmaking, including shot listing, designing, lighting, editing, sound design, and creative collaboration with classmates On the last day of class, students will premiere their finished short film to family and friends!

NEW COURSE: Jewelry Studio (Ages

8-13)

In this workshop, young designers transform a variety of materials into wearable works of art. Participants explore the foundations of jewelry design while learning hands-on techniques, such as forming custom pendants, stringing and patterning with beads, braiding and knotting cord for texture, and constructing simple jump-ring works inspired by chainmail Students experiment with color, balance, and composition to make a collection of unique pieces.

NEW COURSE: Monster Sculpting (Ages 8-13)

This sculpture class focuses on the basics of clay sculpting using Monster Clay Students learn the necessary tools and techniques needed to create successful clay sculptures, including skulls, portraits, and monsters. The skills gained in this course help students gain a deeper understanding of the 3-D space utilized when creating a dynamic sculpture

Musical Theatre Workshop (Ages 8-15)

This fun-filled, introductory musical theatre class engages students in the creative process, while giving them foundational skills in singing, acting, and dancing. Students learn to find their voice and hone their skills in character development, storytelling, ensemble building, and creative expression while maintaining body alignment and freedom of expression

NEW COURSE: Painting (Ages 11-15)

In this introductory painting workshop, students are introduced to both acrylic and oil painting in a hands-on studio environment They explore color theory, composition, and brush techniques while experimenting with the unique qualities of each medium. By the end of the week, each participant will have completed an original art piece and gained greater confidence in their creative expression

NEW COURSE: Plushie Workshop (Ages 8-13)

Sew your own plushie! In this class, students learn foundational sewing techniques, including pattern creation, cutting, pinning, hand and machine sewing, stuffing, and adding cute finishing touches like whiskers, a cape, or a motorcycle helmet! Step by step, students build confidence as they assemble bodies, attach features, and experiment with texture, color, and details. By week’s end, each maker will head home with a custom plushie and practical sewing skills

NEW COURSE: POW! Comic Art (Ages 8-13)

Create your own comic from start to finish! In this engaging class, students explore the fundamentals of comic art, including drawing techniques, visual storytelling, composition, and character design. Throughout the week, participants develop original characters, build imaginative worlds, and craft a short comic that brings their ideas to life

NEW COURSE: Puppet Making (Ages 8-13)

Step into a week of imagination, experimentation, and sculpture in this mixed media puppet class Students bring an original character to life, from sketch to fully constructed puppet –learning a variety of skills in the process, including sewing, sculpting, painting, and puppetry performance. By the conclusion of the class, students will leave with their very own puppet, full of personality and expression

Recording Techniques (Ages 12-15)

In this innovative course, students learn about the analog and digital recording techniques used throughout history Using a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), students learn step-by-step methods and creative problem-solving techniques to record live audio and create an authentic, unique sound.

Stage Combat (Ages 12-15)

A slap to the face, a fall down some stairs, an epic 15-person battle complete with swords and axes – these are all examples of stage combat! This fun introductory class covers the acts of conflict, danger, and defense performed for entertainment on stage or film. Using props and safe instructional methods, students learn to execute various stage combat moves to tell a story as effectively as using dance choreography, set design, or costuming

Superheroes & Supervillains: Storytelling Through Comics (Ages 12-15)

Do you love comic books? Do you have a deep interest in the lore of your favorite heroes and villains? Do you want to learn how to develop your own layered comic characters? In this class, students learn about superhero and supervillain archetypes, using inspiration from all their favorite comics and comic films as they create their own complex heroes and villains.

Theatrical Makeup Design (Ages 12-15)

In this introductory class, students gain understanding of the difference between makeup for theatre and for film/television Students learn special effects techniques used in the horror and fantasy genres, while also practicing makeup looks that would be perfect for the theatre stage

NEW COURSE: Writing Science Fiction & Fantasy (Ages 11-15)

Unleash your imagination in this writing class focusing on science fiction and fantasy short stories and short screenplays. Students practice generating unique story ideas and building futuristic or magical worlds while learning writing fundamentals, such as creating compelling characters and developing effective dialogue Students participate in group and individual writing exercises and games, learn how to contribute to peer review sessions, and look at classic science fiction and fantasy examples from literature, film, and TV to help them craft a final, polished short story or script.

Who May Register

CSArts Academy classes are open to students in the community. The age group varies depending on the class. Please check the description and details carefully when selecting your classes.

Fees

Class fees include most materials and supplies. Some classes may require students to provide additional materials, such as their own musical instruments, dance shoes, or costumes.

Discounts

Current or Returning Student Discount: Returning CSArts Academy students and current families enrolled at California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley (CSArts-SGV) or Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) are eligible for a one time discount of 10% off their registration fees. Please contact academy@csarts.net to receive a 10% discount code.

Payment Plans

Please contact academy@csarts.net if you would like to receive information about payment plan options.

Scholarships

Scholarships and financial assistance are offered as space and enrollment allow. If you believe you may qualify, please contact academy@csarts.net.

Canceled Classes

A class may be canceled if the class enrollment minimum is not reached up to three (3) business days before the start of the class. You may transfer to another class (pending class availability) and transfer the registration fees from the canceled class if you do so within two (2) days of the cancellation, or you may request a full refund.

Refunds

Refunds can be requested by participants up to six (6) weeks before the start date of their chosen summer session class(es). All cancellations are subject to a $50 PER CLASS DROP FEE. Due to the limited number of spaces available in our classes, NO REFUNDS will be issued after these deadlines. REFUND POLICIES ARE STRICTLY ENFORCED.
