A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Friends and Families,

It is my privilege to welcome you to the 2025-2026 performance season at California School of the Arts –San Gabriel Valley (CSArts-SGV)! I am thrilled to introduce this year’s extraordinary lineup of performances and events. Each of these productions is a celebration of the passion, talent, and dedication of our students, faculty, and staff.

Every year, I am deeply inspired by the collaborative efforts of our school community, as those on stage and behind the scenes come together to make the impossible possible. Tonight, I feel honored to share the creative spirit of our campus with you and to invite you to experience firsthand the magic our students and teachers have been working so hard to create.

As we embark on another exciting season, I would like to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation to the corporations and individuals in the following groups. CSArts-SGV’s continued success is made possible by their generous support, leadership, and vision.

Season Sponsors Board of Trustees

Foundation Board of Directors

Strategic and Educational Partners

President’s Circle Encore Family Action Network (FAN) Support Our Seniors (SOS)

Additionally, I would like to share my gratitude for the valued partnerships that have been cultivated between our school and Duarte Unified School District (DUSD), the DUSD Board of Education, and the City of Duarte Council Members.

Finally, I would like to recognize the vital contributions of our parents, alumni, administrators, faculty and staff, members of the local community, and – most importantly – our remarkable student artists. Our students remain at the heart of everything we do, and their creativity and growth are our greatest achievements.

Thank you for celebrating this impressive performance season with us. We invite you to immerse yourself in the artistry, energy, and inspiration that define the CSArts-SGV experience.

With gratitude,

ROGRAM OTE

Few works in the choral/ orchestral repertoire have captured the public imagination quite like Carmina Burana. From the thunderous opening of “O Fortuna” (now instantly recognizable through its use in films, commercials, and popular media) to its final, cyclical return, the piece has transcended the concert hall to become a cultural phenomenon. Its driving rhythms, bold sonorities, and unforgettable melodies create an experience that is visceral and theatrical. But beneath its immediate

To answer that, we journey back nearly a millennium to medieval Bavaria in southern Germany. There, in the 11th and 12th centuries, a remarkable collection of more than 250 poems and dramatic texts was created by a group known as the Goliards –young, educated clerics and students who often stood at the margins of institutional life. Writing primarily in Latin (with some vernacular German and French), they crafted verses that were irreverent, satirical, and vividly human. Their works challenged the contradictions of the Church and society, often presented through performance in festive or subversive settings such as the Feast of Fools or even within the framework of liturgy itself.

When Orff encountered this collection, he was captivated by its imagery and immediacy. Rather than attempting to recreate medieval music, he forged a bold new musical language rooted in rhythm and repetition. Selecting 24 poems from the larger manuscript, he fashioned what he called a “scenic cantata,” a sequence of self-contained musical tableaux exploring the cycles of life, love, and fate.

At its core, Carmina Burana speaks to universal human experience. Its texts revel in the arrival of spring, the intoxication of love, the pleasures and excesses of earthly life, and the ever-turning wheel of fortune. The famous opening and closing chorus, “O Fortuna,” frames the entire work with a stark reminder of life’s unpredictability: joy and sorrow, power and poverty, all are subject to forces beyond our control.

Nearly a thousand years after these poems were written, their themes remain

familiar. In rehearsing this work, our singers have laughed at its humor, gasped at its boldness, and found themselves reflected in its honesty. The Goliards’ voices - playful, questioning, passionate - still resonate.

This evening’s performance presents a slightly adapted version of the work. For the sake of time and in order to bring the remaining movements to their fullest realization, we have chosen to omit the central section, In Taberna. Because Carmina Burana unfolds as a series of independent musical scenes rather than a continuous narrative, this decision allows the overall arc and spirit of the piece to remain fully intact.

The full title of the work, Carmina Burana: Cantiones profanae cantoribus et choris cantandae comitantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magicis (“Secular songs for singers and choruses to be sung together with instruments and magical images”), offers a final lens through which to experience this performance.

Those last words - imaginibus magicis, “magical images”invite us to engage not only with sound, but with atmosphere, space, and imagination.

Though often staged with dancers or elaborate theatrical elements, tonight’s performance places that responsibility in your hands. Listen closely. Let your senses awaken. Allow the music to conjure your own images.

It has been a profound joy to bring together this community of musicians for such a monumental work. May you leave tonight feeling energized, inspired, and vividly alive. I hope you enjoy the performance!
