Last week ended disappointingly but overall it was an excellent second half performance against a very good Wolves side; we need to take all the positives from that as we head into today’s game. There was a lot of controversy surrounding VAR last week, especially offsides. I’m surprised that people are taken aback we still find things to disagree on; VAR was never going to fix everything and there’s a trade-off between it being involved in every decision and trying to eradicate the worst errors. Regarding offside specifically, it feels as though ironically that the human eye was probably doing a better job, it sort of created its own tolerance level as the linesman would never be able to see the tiny margins VAR is now picking up and penalising. Vicente is today’s programme cover star, and it was great to read how happy he is with life in London and also the news of his young lad’s
experience in our Academy. Vicente pulled off a remarkable save against Wolves, and is becoming a very consistent performer. With Mamadou getting fitter and stronger each week as he continues his recovery from the long-term injury, James Tomkins playing for the U23s, and Gary slotting in so seamlessly alongside Joel and Patrick, I’m hopeful that our defence will continue its reputation of being extremely miserly. Vicente, Luka and Lucy from our women’s team went to a local primary school earlier in the week, interacting with hundreds of youngsters. We’ve made a concerted effort for more of this type of activity because it’s so important that we inspire a new, young and local generation. I hope that we can continue to be a force for good in south London and help excite local youngsters. I know this is something that Roy and the players also believe in. Of course, a winning team will help!

A Palace fan favourite already, the language barrier means Eagles don’t always get to hear from their No.31. However, Spanish-speaking Luke Dunn, sat down with Vicente Guaita and discussed Lionel Messi, former boss Unai Emery and iconic ‘keeper, Santiago Cañizares.

Asked if it’s harder without him, Guaita says: “Well, football’s a bit like that. At times you have new teammates, other times you remain with teammates. I think last season we had a really great group. Between Julián, Wayne [Hennessey] and I, we got on really well. This year we’re still really happy, Deano [Dean Kiely] is still here as a goalkeeping coach. He’s a great person and a true professional who helps us a

the team as much as possible. Of course, it’s always great to have another Spanish speaker - another Valenciano - in the team.” And indeed, there’s no hiding Guaita’s Valencian roots, having grown up in Los Ches’ Academy in the shadow of another iconic blonde, Santiago Cañizares. “It was an absolutely fantastic opportunity to work alongside Cañizares,” he starts glowingly. “I think he’s known worldwide, and

As a typically jovial Vicente Guaita strolls down to the Palace media centre with a smile on his face - fist-bumping every member of staff as he goes, greeting a few in lightning-quick Spanish - it’s easy to forget a footballing CV that would comfortably blow most Premier League ‘keepers out of the water. Here is a man who was once tasked with filling the sizeable void left by the legendary Santiago Cañizares at Valencia; a man who forced his way into Unai Emery’s first-team at the age of just 22; a man who cut his teeth against the likes of David Villa, Juan Mata and David Silva in training; and a man who once stared down Barcelona’s Lionel Messi from 12-yards and parried his penalty clear. But with no flicker of an ego, the patience to give you all the time you need and the humility to shrug off his claims to fame as ‘just part of the job’, it’s also easy to see why he would be a popular choice for any club. Despite having spent just over a year in south London, there’s no questioning Guaita’s popularity at Palace. His performances have rightly won over Selhurst and he’s definitely a cool character. But as we sit down to start our interview ‘formally’, the light-hearted, silver-haired Vicente

It looks like we are in for a fast start today with Norwich’s league games this season, seeing 12 goals scored in the opening 30 minutes of the match (four goals scored, eight goals conceded) - no side has seen more in this time (Manchester City are also on 12). Crystal Palace’s home form has greatly improved, with Roy Hodgson’s side having avoided defeat in their last five league games at Selhurst Park - prior to this run Palace had lost five of eight. If Hodgson manages to earn a point or three today, it will only be the third time in the Premier League that the south Londoners have avoided a home defeat in six games. Norwich may not be feeling

too confident today with the Canaries joining Aston Villa as the only side in the league to not have earned a point away from home. And despite possessing the league’s jointthird top scorer in Teemu Pukki – who has been involved in 89% of their goals so far - Norwich have just three away strikes to their name in their last 13 Premier League games away from Carrow Road. A win for either side today will go a long way in preventing a concerning stat for both sides from continuing, with at least one of the Canaries or Eagles being relegated in every Premier League season the pair have met - Palace in 1992/93, both sides in 1994/95 and 2004/05, and Norwich in 2013/14 and 2015/16.

Luka Milivojevic was joined by teammate Vicente Guaita and Lucy Gillett from Crystal Palace Women to visit Tweeddale Primary School for a special assembly with the Palace for Life Foundation. The three Palace stars arrived to a wall of noise and excitement, walking out in front of almost 400 children at the Sutton school to rapturous cheers and applause. The children were invited to ask the players questions about their lives what motivates them, with each of the players also sharing key pieces of advice. Palace captain Milivojevic said: “I really enjoyed meeting the children today and answering their questions. It was nice to find out more about them and share some stories about when I
was young. Spending time with young fans is an important part of our job, it was great to see them all smiling and enjoying themselves.” The two ‘keepers, Guaita and Gillett, then took on a group of the children in a quiz all about Palace and healthy eating, designed to help educate the children about one of the Foundation’s key objectives: healthy lives. Speaking afterwards, Guaita said: “This kind of day is really important. Firstly, to dedicate this time to the kids, as you can see how much it matters to them but also to show that the players are real people and they’re real human beings and if you work hard enough you can be a footballer one day.” One of the children, aged nine, was excited to be involved.

She said: “I was really nervous at first because I didn’t know what it was going to be like, but when I asked my question it felt amazing, it was a once in a lifetime chance and the players were so nice!”

I’m excited to see what the Championship has to offer and what is different from the Women’s Super League. I’ll be keeping up with my own personal training routine as coming to Palace means I’m going to be part-time rather than full-time like at Bristol. I knew a few of the girls prior to coming due to my early career days with the Millwall Lionesses: Ciara Sherwood, Ashlee Hincks, Jordan Butler and Leeta Rutherford. Palace have given me the opportunity to play with a bit of freedom, get back involved with football as I have had a bit of time out of it and, ultimately, my main aim is to help out this club as I feel they’ve deserved a lot more than the results they’ve been getting.
Without a pre-season, it meant a lot that Dean Davenport trusted me to start my debut against Lewes a couple of weeks back in our draw with them in the league. It was an honour to pull on the red and blue shirt of the club I grew up near. I’ve enjoyed working with Bianca Baptiste in training and in the couple of games we’ve started. As a striker, a right-winger like Bianca is fantastic for me and I’m excited to see how our relationship on the pitch grows as we get to know how each other play. Being amongst the experienced players like Leeta and Ashlee has been great for me. Ash’s injury is a real blow to us, as I had enjoyed our initial link-up play during the Lewes game prior to her having to come off.

Starting in the next game at Aston Villa, with 90 minutes under my belt, meant I was looking to make an impact having worked off any rustiness against Lewes. However, an injury in the first-half put a stop to that. Despite being injured, I came along to support the team from the stands against Lewes in our Continental Cup game last weekend. The win meant so much to the girls, and we showcased our clinical ability in front of goal, defended well and Rea Laudat’s screamer was a goal that deserved to decide the game. I am hoping to be back available for our league game against Leicester City on Sunday. Leicester have a young squad so I’m expecting a lively and dynamic challenge for us.

I was looking forward to return back to my south London roots, so I was delighted that Bristol City and Crystal Palace were able work out a last-minute loan deal agreement for me. It’s great to be back home and back in the community.
