HISTORY Something that our two clubs share in common is that we were both founded in 1905. However, we didn’t meet Chelsea in the league until the 1924/1925 season when both clubs were in the Second Division. Our first ever visit to Stamford Bridge was in September 1924 and that finished 2-2. We then had to wait another 45 years, until we finally reached Division One, before we went there again - that was another draw (1-1) with Roger Hoy scoring for us and Peter Osgood for them. We won our first league game at Chelsea in 1982, when they popped down to see us in Division Two. Our first win there in the top-flight was not to come until August 2015 in that fabulous match where Damo marked Costa out of
the game - our winner came from Joel Ward (of all people!) with 10 minutes to go. MEMORABLE MATCH For me, there’s only one contender for this: it was a cold winter’s day in February 1976, and Palace were a Third Division team playing First Division Chelsea in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. I remember it vividly. The atmosphere was electric and I don’t recall any segregation in the huge crowd of 54,000. There was certainly a fair bit of ‘bovver’ as we called it in those days. Palace won 3-2 thanks to a Man of the Match performance from the brilliant Peter Taylor; he made the first goal, scored the second and then grabbed the winner with a 20-yard free kick. wore his fedora and the Palace team wore the white strip with a diagonal sash for the first time. One of my favourite away games ever! TRAVEL This is match number four of our four consecutive away games in London and the easiest journey of all. Traditionally, we’ve tended to go to Chelsea by train to Victoria and then jumped on a District Line tube to Fulham Broadway. Nowadays though, I find the easiest route is to take the Overground from Clapham Junction to West Brompton (or Imperial Wharf) and it’s then a short walk to the ground. PUBS AND BEER There are no micro-breweries near the stadium, although Sambrooks is just over the river in Battersea. They
won’t be for much longer though, as they will soon be moving to the site of the old Youngs brewery in Wandsworth. However, there is a huge choice of pubs to drink in before or, in the case of this 12:30pm kick-off, after the game. Chelsea, Fulham and Earl’s Court have plenty to choose from and there’s even London’s only pub with a Michelin star – The Harwood Arms – just off the North End Road. My own favourite is The White Horse on Parsons Green which has, without a doubt, one of London’s finest beer selections. There’s usually at least 20 cask and craft ales on offer with cult names like Roosters, Oakham, Magic Rock and Tiny Rebel often present.
PLAYED FOR BOTH CLUBS The recent arrival of Gary Cahill (what a great signing that has been) got me thinking about other Chelsea players who have moved to Palace. When I was a boy we had Paddy Mulligan, Bobby Tambling, Charlie Cooke and Alan Birchenall. Later on we signed two players from the Blues who would go on to score crucial play-off final winners for us: David Hopkin and Neil Shipperley. Less successful was one of Chelsea’s greatest ever players, the late Ray Wilkins, who signed for Palace in 1994 but broke his foot on his debut and never played for us again. FAMOUS CHELSEA FANS There’s plenty to choose from, but I’m going to pick out Woody and Suggs from Madness who are regulars at Stamford Bridge and are often at Selhurst Park when we play the Blues at home.
