Next comes surfing in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, then seafood and jungle exploration in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. South America is our quest on a day at sea, which we reach at Manta in Ecuador, renowned for its wickerwork, an obvious souvenir. Our final port is Guayaquil, gateway to the Galápagos Islands.

At the other end, we make for the beautiful UNESCO-listed city of Cartegena, then we cross the Caribbean to two equally historic cities, Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and, via the holiday playground of Punta Cana, our final port, San Juan in Puerto Rico.

Time to beach-bar hop in Jost Van Dyke, in the British Virgin Islands, before discovering more about the Dominican Republic in the museum at Samaná. Two more sea days carry us to another place steeped in history, Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, and you can find out more about the island in the museum at our next stop, Samaná. San Juan is our final port, the historic capital of Puerto Rico with pretty streets and lively bars.

Then we cross to St John’s in Antigua, to hit the beach – they say there’s one for every day of the year here – or zipline through the rainforest. Another sea day brings us to the powder sands of Cozumel, Mexico, then it’s on to Roatán Island, Honduras, and Santo Tomás, Guatemala. Our voyage continues to Montego Bay in Jamaica, where rum punch on the beach is a must, and Grand Cayman, for encounters with stingrays and blue iguanas. A day at sea completes the loop as we return to Fort Lauderdale.

Another sea day takes us to Oranjestad, Aruba, the Dutch island’s bustling harbor city. There is more nature to enjoy at Tayrona Natural National Park on our next stop, Santa Marta, on the Colombian coast. Now we relax at sea for a day, bound for the exciting experience of cruising the Panama Canal, one of the great manmade wonders of the world. Fuerte Amador is the gateway to Panama City before our journey ends in Puerto Caldera on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

Visit one of the oldest botanical gardens in the western hemisphere in Kingstown, St Vincent; admire the modern cathedral with murals of black saints in Castries, St Lucia; and browse the markets in Fort-de-France, Martinique. Explore the UNESCO-listed Brimstone Fort National Park from Basseterre in St Kitts, before our journey ends in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
