Dear CRYC Members: The month kicked off in style with the Outgoing Commodore’s Ball, a time-honored occasion to celebrate the remarkable leadership of Commodore Maynard Hellman. The ball was a dazzling affair, marked by heartfelt speeches and a collective appreciation of a year of dedicated service. We extend our gratitude to him for steering us through a successful year. Our 2024 leadership team set sail to The Club at Admirals Cove for a Board Retreat, where our newest members of the Board of Governors received an orientation, and everyone came together to chart the course for the upcoming year. The day was filled with energy and enthusiasm as we collaboratively laid the foundation for a year that promises growth, innovation, and camaraderie. The commitment of our new leadership team to start the year on the right foot is truly inspiring.

As we embark on Commodore Roche’s year of leadership, we anticipate great things on the horizon starting with the Incoming Commodore’s Ball on February 3, 2024, beginning with cocktails and hor’s d’oeuvres poolside at 6:30 PM. The Superbowl LVIII Watch Party will be on Sunday, February 11. The pregame festivities will begin at 5:30 PM, with gameday drink specials and a tailgate buffet in the Burgee Bar. This year, our Valentine’s Day Dinner & Dance will be held on the actual day, so make sure all you lovebirds sign up for a romantic night with our favorite band from NYE, the Reaxtion Band. The approaching spring season promises a calendar full of fun and friendships. We invite all our owners and their guests to join us in all that we have to offer.

If you have been to the Club lately, you will have witnessed the noticeable progression of the building construction. There are three main roof areas for The Pointe: the sloped roof over the bar and covered dining area, the retractable roof over the east side terrace dining area, and the flat roof over the kitchen and bathroom areas. The sloped roof structure is installed, the flat roof area will be dried in by mid-January, and the retractable roof is being fabricated. Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and low voltage continues to be installed. Interior wall framing will soon be complete. Grading, fencing, and landscaping have been adjusted for the area north of The Pointe to enhance usage of the pickleball court, amenity lawn, and ground level patio, as we ll as screening views from The Pointe.

Book Club

The Sunﬂower Sisters by Martha Hall Kelly is our book for discussion on Friday, February 23, 2024. Our facilitator is Barbara Petrello. It is a saga on the Civil War involving enslaved people, slave owners, abolitionists, soldiers, and nurses.The author’s tale hones in on the microcosms inhabiting three narrators. Georgy is from New York, one of seven sisters of an abolitionist family, who is determined to be a nurse. She strives to battle prejudice, not just against women doctors, but also women nurses in war-torn New York, where the population has diverse opinions on the war. Jemma Strong is enslaved on a tobacco plantation in the state of Maryland, where the white population seems equally divided between Union and Rebel sympathies. Firmly in the second camp is Anne-May, the owner of Peeler Plantation, and Jemma Strong. It is a sweeping story of individuals caught in a country on the brink of collapse, and in a society grappling with nationalism and racial cruelty. Please make reservations at the front desk, and, at that time, make your lunch selection from the variety of sandwiches (egg salad, tuna salad, or chicken salad) on white, wheat, or rye bread. A Cobb salad is also available. Lunch is promptly at 12 noon when the book discussion begins.
